Abstract
Description
Title of the invention: SUNSCREEN COMPOSITION
[0001] Exposure to sunlight poses a health hazard that has become increasingly important in recent decades. Acute exposure to sunlight can lead to sunburn, which is characterized by irritation and redness of the skin. More significantly, prolonged sun exposure increases the risk of skin cancer. Among the various subtypes of skin cancer, melanoma poses the greatest risk because it is particularly aggressive and difficult to treat if not caught before it spreads. The American Cancer Society estimates that nearly 100,000 cases of melanoma will be diagnosed in 2019, with approximately 7,000 deaths. Finally, sun exposure is implicated in premature skin aging, hair damage, and eye damage (including cataracts).
[0002] The ultraviolet region of solar radiation, located between 200 nm and 400 nm, can be classified into three regions: 320 to 400 nm (UV-A), 290 to 320 nm (UV-B), and 200 to 290 nm (UV-C), the latter of which generally does not penetrate the Earth's atmosphere. Historically, there has been more interest in the health risks of UV-B exposure; more recently, however, the potential damage caused by UV-A has been observed more in relation to melanoma and other skin cancers. Therefore, protection against too much UV-A and UV-B radiation is an important part of personal care.
[0003] Annatto is a reddish-orange colorant derived from the seeds of the annatto tree (Bixa orellana), native to tropical regions of the Americas. It is sustainably sourced in the state of San Paulo in Brazil and is an approved colorant for cosmetics (CI 75120) in the European Union and the United States. Summary of the invention

In some aspects, the sunscreen composition comprises about 20% by weight of UV filters.
[0025] In some aspects of the disclosure, the blue light absorbing component comprises an annatto extract. Annatto is a red-orange condiment and food coloring derived from the seeds of the annatto tree (Bixa orelland), native to tropical regions of the Americas. It is often used to impart a yellow or orange color to foods, but sometimes also for its taste and aroma. Its odor is described as “slightly peppery with a nutmeg note” and its aroma as “a light nutty, sweet, and peppery taste.” The yellow-orange color is produced by the chemical compounds bixin and norbixin, which are classified as carotenoids. The fat-soluble color of the crude extract is called bixin, which can then be saponified into the water-soluble norbixin. This dual solubility property of annatto is rare for carotenoids. The seeds contain 4.5% to 5.5% pigment, which is 70% to 80% bixin. Unlike beta-carotene, another well-known carotenoid, annatto pigments are not precursors to vitamin A. The more norbixin present in annatto, the more yellow it is; a higher level of bixin gives it a more orange hue.
[0026] In some aspects, the annatto extract is an aqueous solution or an oily solution. In examples where the annatto extract is the aqueous solution and the extract comprises water, annatto and potassium hydroxide. In the aqueous solution, the annatto comprises norbixin and the norbixin is in a range of about 0.5 wt% to about 5 wt%; about 2 wt% to about 3 wt% of the aqueous solution; less than, equal to, or greater than about 0.5 wt%; 1; 1.5; 2; 2.5; 3; 3.5; 4; 4.5 or about 5 wt% of the aqueous solution. In examples where the annatto extract is the oily solution, the extract comprises annatto and a vegetable oil.In the oily solution, the annatto comprises norbixin and the norbixin is in a range of about 5 wt% to about 15 wt% of the aqueous solution; about 7 wt% to about 9 wt% of the aqueous solution; less than, equal to, or greater than about 5 wt%; 5.5; 6; 6.5; 7; 7.5; 8; 8.5; 9; 9.5; 10; 10.5; 11; 11.5; 12; 12.5; 13; . 13.5; 14; 14.5 or about 15% by weight. The vegetable oil may be helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil.
[0027] While annatto works well to absorb blue light, a disadvantage is that the color of annatto may not be desirable. This problem is addressed by the inclusion of a pigment or colorant to tone down the natural color of annatto. The pigment may be a suitable pigment for use in a colored cosmetic product, including compositions for application to the hair, nails, and / or skin, especially the face. Colored cosmetic compositions include, but are not limited to, foundations, concealers, primers, blush, mascara, eye shadow, eyeliner, lipstick, nail polish, and tinted moisturizers. The pigment suitable for providing color or hiding power may be composed of iron oxides, including red and yellow iron oxides, titanium dioxide, ultramarine colors, and chromium or chromium hydroxide, and mixtures thereof. The pigment may be a lake pigment, for example, an organic dye such as azo, indigoid, triphenylmethane, anthraquinone, and xanthine dyes, which are referred to as blues, browns, greens, oranges, reds, D&C and FD&C yellows, etc., precipitated on inert binders such as insoluble salts. Examples of lake pigments include Red No. 6, Red No. 7, Yellow No. 5, Violet No. 2, and Blue No. 1. The pigment may be an interference pigment.Examples of interference pigments include those containing mica substrates, bismuth oxychloride substrates, and silica substrates, for example, mica / bismuth oxychloride / iron oxide pigments commercially available as CHROMALITE pigments (BASF), titanium dioxide and / or iron oxides deposited on mica such as commercially available FLAMENCO pigments (BASF), mica / titanium dioxide / iron oxide pigments including commercially available KTZ pigments (Kobo products), CELLINI pearlescent pigments (BASF), and borosilicate-containing pigments such as REFLECHS pigments (BASF).

The AUC in the spectral absorption spectrum after irradiation with a solar simulator is at least 90% of the AUC in the spectral absorption spectrum before irradiation. Sunlight stability may be measured by methods known to those skilled in the art.
[0059] In some aspects, the sunscreen composition is substantially water resistant. Water resistance may be measured by methods known to those skilled in the art. In some aspects, the composition is water resistant for 40 or 80 minutes, as codified by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration at Section 201.327(i)(7) of Volume 21 of the Code of Federal Regulations (2019).
[0060] In some aspects, the sunscreen composition is phase stable. As used herein, the term "phase stability" refers to maintaining interfacial stability or suspension stability or both at each of 4°C, 32-37°C, 40-45°C, 25°C for at least 4 weeks.
[0061] By "interfacial stability" is meant stability against coalescence and coarsening of a discontinuous phase in a two or more phase composition. By "suspension stability" is meant stability against creaming and / or sedimentation of a discontinuous phase, e.g., solids, suspended in a continuous phase.
[0062] In some aspects, the sunscreen composition maintains both interfacial stability and suspension stability at each of the temperatures in the range of 25 to 45°C, for example at 25°C, 32°C, 37°C, 40°C, 45°C for at least 4 weeks. To evaluate such stability conditions, the composition may be loaded into an appropriately sized container where it is clearly visible, such as a 120 ml / 4 oz clear glass jar.
[0063] The interfacial stability of the sunscreen composition can be assessed visually and is considered unstable if at least two distinct immiscible phases of the composition are observed, as is well known to those skilled in the art.
[0064] In some aspects, the sunscreen composition is not phase stable and, for example, is agitated prior to use. As also known in the art, the suspension stability of the sunscreen composition may be assessed visually or by touch and is considered unstable if a distinct separation or gradient in color, opacity, particle size, or other indicator of non-uniformity is observed between different regions in a sample (i.e., top and bottom, or other different regions). The suspension stability of the composition may alternatively be assessed, but is not limited to, Brookfield viscosity and is considered unstable if there are significant changes in viscosity measurement (5 or 10 or 20% for example) between different regions in a sample (i.e., top and bottom or other different regions). Brookfield viscosity can be measured with a Brookfield Laboratory viscometer from AMETEK Inc. (Middleboro, MA).
[0065] Overall phase stability can also be assessed by other techniques known in the art, for example, significant changes in chemical composition as determined by an analytical chemistry test between different regions in a sample (i.e., top and bottom or other different regions).
[0066] The sunscreen composition can be used by topical application to the skin. The application method may include direct spraying, applying, wiping or spreading the composition onto the skin.
[0067] The sunscreen composition may be prepared using a mixing and kneading methodology well established in the sunscreen and cosmetic art. In one aspect, the composition is produced by preparing an oil phase by mixing the UV absorbing compounds with optional oil-soluble or oil-miscible ingredients; and preparing an aqueous phase by mixing water and the optional water-soluble or water-miscible ingredients. The oil phase and the aqueous phase may then be mixed sufficiently to disperse the oil phase substantially homogeneously in the aqueous phase such that the aqueous phase is continuous and the oil phase is discontinuous.
[0068] The weight percentage of aqueous phase included in the compositions may range from about 30% to about 85%, for example from about 35% to about 75%, for example from about 40% to about 70%. The weight percentage of water in the aqueous phase may be about 60% or more, for example about 70% or more, for example about 90% or more.
