Abstract
Description
Title of the invention: Battery holder and corresponding manufacturing method
[0001] Coin-shaped cell battery holder, method for producing a coin-shaped cell battery, and a printed circuit board comprising a coin-shaped cell battery holder
[0002] The invention relates to a coin-shaped cell battery holder for vertically holding a coin-shaped cell battery upright on a printed circuit board, a method for producing a coin-shaped cell battery holder for vertically holding a coin-shaped cell battery on a printed circuit board and a printed circuit board comprising a coin-shaped cell battery holder.
[0003] The dimensions of a printed circuit board depend on the number of components on the board and the respective sizes of the components on the board. Some devices require a backup battery to provide electricity. In many cases, a coin-cell battery is used as a backup battery. The coin-cell battery is mounted on the printed circuit board using a coin-cell battery holder. Usually, these battery holders are designed as so-called "horizontal" battery holders, where the battery is placed flat or parallel to the printed circuit board. These horizontal battery holders ensure stable attachment of the battery to the printed circuit board. However, horizontal battery holders require large lateral dimensions on the printed circuit board.
[0004] Another type of battery holder for printed circuit boards is a so-called vertical coin cell battery holder, which is configured to hold the coin cell battery upright, perpendicular to the printed circuit board. Therefore, the lateral space required by the vertical coin cell battery holder is smaller than the lateral space required by the horizontal coin cell battery holder.
[0005] However, stable fixation of the coin-shaped battery is more difficult with a vertical battery holder than with a horizontal battery holder, because the battery may be subjected to tilting forces.
[0006] JP 2001 273 876 A discloses a vertical battery holder. The vertical battery holder holds a flat battery such as a button cell or a coin cell. coin in a vertical state on a surface of a printed circuit board. The vertical battery holder includes two terminals for contacting the battery. The two terminals have a different shape and are connected to a plastic holder of the vertical battery holder by insert molding during a molding process of the plastic holder. The vertical battery holder includes lower end side connection parts that can be connected to an external circuit to electrically connect the battery and the external circuit. However, the vertical battery holder does not include specific elements for mechanically connecting the vertical battery holder to a printed circuit board.
[0007] US 5,586,907 A discloses a battery connector for disc-shaped batteries. The battery connector is configured for disc-shaped batteries having a housing with the battery receiving cavity. The battery connector comprises a housing, produced by plastic molding. The battery connector comprises two terminals of an identical shape, assembled to the housing in a separate step. The battery connector comprises contact sections, adapted to be brought into mechanical and electrical contact with corresponding pads on a circuit board by soldering or the like in order to fix the battery connector to the circuit board.
[0008] JP 2000 030 680 A discloses a button battery mounting structure on a wiring circuit board. The button battery mounting structure comprises a battery storage case and two contacts of different shapes. The battery storage case is produced by plastic molding, the two contacts being assembled to the battery storage case in a further step.
[0009] US 2012 039 053 A1 describes a system and method for coupling a battery within an embedded system. A plastic holder is produced separately by molding. Two contacts have different shapes and are assembled to an outer portion of the plastic holder in a separate step.
[0010] Battery holders can be subject to shock and vibration if the mechanical attachment to a printed circuit board is inadequate, or if terminals are loosely fitted to a plastic housing. A disadvantage of battery holders that require multiple assembly steps is the manufacturing effort. Battery holders with differently shaped terminals can be more expensive to produce because different production lines must be provided for the different parts.
[0011] An objective of the present invention is to provide a "vertical" coin cell battery holder that allows a coin cell battery to be stably held on a circuit board. printed. It is also an object of the present invention to provide a vertical coin-shaped cell type battery holder which is easy and quick to manufacture.
[0012] The object is achieved by a coin-shaped cell type battery holder for vertically holding a coin-shaped cell on a printed circuit board, characterized in that the coin-shaped cell type battery holder has two metal sheets arranged at a transverse distance from each other along a transverse direction of the coin-shaped cell type battery holder, the two metal sheets are connected to each other at longitudinal ends of the two metal sheets by two insulating end housings arranged at a longitudinal distance from each other along a longitudinal direction of the coin-shaped cell type battery holder, the two insulating end housings being fixed at the longitudinal ends of the metal sheets in an overmolding procedure, and
[0013] - a coin-shaped battery receiving cavity for receiving the coin-shaped battery, which cavity is at least partially delimited by the two insulating end cases and the two metal sheets.
[0014] The object is also achieved by a method for producing a coin-shaped cell battery holder for vertically holding a coin-shaped cell on a printed circuit board, comprising the following steps: - arranging two metal sheets at a transverse distance from each other along a transverse direction of the coin-shaped cell battery holder, and - connecting the two metal sheets to each other at longitudinal ends of the two metal sheets by attaching two insulating end housings at the longitudinal ends of the metal sheets in an insert molding procedure, the two insulating end housings being arranged at a longitudinal distance from each other along a longitudinal direction of the coin-shaped cell battery holder.
[0015] Advantageous developments with the aid of other practical and not insignificant embodiments of the invention are specified in the following description and the drawings.
[0016] A first aspect of the invention relates to a coin cell type battery holder for perpendicularly or vertically holding a coin cell upright on a printed circuit board. The coin cell may also be called a button cell or a round flat cell. Holding the coin cell vertically means that the major dimension of the coin cell is perpendicular to a major plane of the circuit board to which the coin cell holder is attached.
[0017] The coin-shaped cell type battery holder comprises two metal sheets arranged at a transverse distance from each other along a transverse direction of the coin-shaped cell type battery holder. In other words, the coin-shaped cell type battery holder comprises the two metal sheets. The metal sheets are arranged such that the principal planes of the two metal sheets are transversely spaced from each other. In other words, the principal planes of the two metal sheets are separated from each other by the transverse distance.
[0018] The two metal sheets are connected to each other at the longitudinal ends of the two metal sheets by two insulating end housings which are arranged at a longitudinal distance from each other along the longitudinal direction of the coin-shaped cell type battery holder. In other words, the two metal sheets are connected to each other by the two insulating end housings. A respective one of the insulating end housings is arranged at the longitudinal ends of the metal sheets. The respective longitudinal end of the metal sheet is at least partially embedded in the insulating end housing. The two insulating end housings are attached to the metal sheets at the longitudinal ends of the metal sheets in an overmolding process. In other words, the two metal sheets are connected at their longitudinal ends by respective insulating end caps, the insulating end caps being attached to the longitudinal ends of the two metal sheets in an overmolding process.
[0019] A coin-shaped battery receiving cavity for receiving the coin-shaped battery is delimited at least partially by the two insulating end housings and two metal sheets. In other words, the coin-shaped battery type battery holder forms the coin-shaped battery receiving cavity for receiving the coin-shaped battery type battery.
[0020] The invention has the advantage that the two metal sheets are connected by the insulating end housings by being at least partially embedded in the insulating end housings. Incorporating the longitudinal ends of the metal sheets into the insulating end housings in an overmolding process has the advantage that the joint between the metal sheets and the insulating end housings is more stable than joints formed by a combination of prefabricated parts after the respective parts have been produced. The use of overmolding also reduces the production time of the coin cell battery holder by eliminating the step of assembling the metal sheets and the insulating end housings.
[0021] The invention also includes embodiments that provide additional technical advantages.
[0022] According to another embodiment of the invention, at least one contact elastic arm member protruding into the battery receiving cavity is arranged on a respective one of the metal sheets. In other words, the respective one of the metal sheets provides at least one contact elastic arm member protruding into the battery receiving cavity. The contact elastic arm member is configured to mechanically hold the coin-cell battery and electrically contact the coin-cell battery in the battery receiving cavity.
[0023] According to another embodiment of the invention, at least one retaining element for at least indirect arrangement of the coin-shaped cell-type battery holder on the printed circuit board is arranged on a lower side of the respective metal sheet facing the printed circuit board. In other words, the respective metal sheet comprises at least one retaining element. The at least one retaining element may be a contact element located on the lower side of the respective metal sheet. The embodiment has the advantage that the coin-shaped cell-type battery holder can be connected to the printed circuit board by means of the retaining elements. The retaining elements may also provide a terminal for electrically connecting the battery to the circuit board.
[0024] According to another embodiment of the invention, a respective one of the insulating end housings has a support member protruding from a lower side of the insulating end housing facing the printed circuit board. In other words, the respective one of the insulating end housings comprises the support member located on a lower side of the insulating end housing. The support member may be in the form of a pin arranged perpendicularly on the lower side of the insulating end housing to pass through a corresponding hole in the printed circuit board. The embodiment has the advantage that the coin-shaped cell-type battery holder can be fixed in corresponding through-holes of the printed circuit board by means of the support members.
[0025] According to another embodiment of the invention, the support elements of the insulating end boxes have different cross-sections. In other words, the support elements of the two insulating end boxes have different geometries. Therefore, the cross-sections of the support elements of the insulating end boxes have different sizes and / or shape different. The embodiment has the advantage that corresponding through-holes can be provided on the printed circuit board to correspond to the respective support elements. Since the support elements have different cross-sections that fit the respective through-holes, it can be ensured that only one arrangement of the coin-cell type battery holder is possible on the printed circuit board. Therefore, by providing the different support elements, it can be ensured that incorrect positioning of the battery holder on the printed circuit board can be prevented.
[0026] According to another embodiment of the invention, a respective one of the metal sheets has an L-shaped cross-section. In other words, the metal sheets comprise a main plane and a secondary plane, a secondary plane being arranged at the main plane at a longitudinal end of the main plane of the respective metal sheet, the secondary plane being arranged perpendicular to the main plane. The embodiment has the advantage that the secondary planes provide a section for clamping the metal sheets in predefined positions in a tool for the overmolding process to form the insulating end caps.
[0027] According to another embodiment of the invention, a respective one of the insulating end housings has a slot extending from an upper side of the respective insulating end housing over a slot length toward the lower side of the insulating end housing. In other words, each of the insulating end housings has a slot extending from a slot opening in the upper side of the respective insulating end housing. The slot extends from the upper side in the direction of the lower side of the insulating end housing over the slot length.
[0028] According to another embodiment of the invention, the slots of the insulating end housings are arranged asymmetrically relative to each other. In other words, the slots may have different positions in a transverse direction of the coin-cell battery holder. The embodiment has the advantage that a corresponding tear of a housing may be arranged in a respective one of the slots in order to hold the coin-cell battery holder in the housing.
[0029] According to another embodiment of the invention, a respective one of the metal sheets has a cutout at the base of the metal sheet. In other words, the respective one of the metal sheets has a cutout, the cutout having an opening at the base of the metal sheet. The embodiment has the advantage that the cutouts allow insertion of a tool into the coin cell receiving cavity to remove the coin cell battery.
[0030] According to another embodiment of the invention, a respective one of the insulating end housings comprises a supporting member that protrudes into the coin-shaped battery receiving cavity, the supporting member being configured to support the battery downward. In other words, the supporting member is arranged at one side of the insulating end housing, facing toward the coin-shaped battery receiving cavity. The supporting member protrudes into the coin-shaped battery receiving cavity. This means that the coin-shaped cell type battery, which is in the coin-shaped battery receiving cavity, rests on the retaining member. Therefore, the supporting member prevents the coin-shaped cell type battery from sliding toward the printed circuit board. The coin-cell battery does not rest on the printed circuit board, but a lower side of the battery is arranged at a distance from the printed circuit board. This has the advantage that a tool guided through the cutout in one of the metal sheets can be guided to the lower side of the coin-cell battery, thereby moving the battery out of the coin-cell receiving cavity by exerting pressure on the lower side of the battery.
[0031] A second aspect of the invention relates to a method for manufacturing a coin-cell battery holder, in particular for holding a coin-cell battery on a printed circuit board. In a first step of the method, metal sheets are arranged at a transverse distance from each other along the transverse direction of the coin-cell battery holder. The metal sheets may be arranged in a molding device configured to perform overmolding. The metal sheets may be attached to the molding device at secondary plates located at longitudinal ends of the metal sheets.
[0032] In the second step, the two metal sheets are connected to each other via the molding device by attaching two insulating end housings to the longitudinal ends of the metal sheets in an overmolding process. In other words, during the process, the insulating end housings are produced in an overmolding process. The two insulating end housings are molded around the longitudinal ends of the plates. The two insulating end housings are arranged at a longitudinal distance along the longitudinal direction of the coin-shaped cell-type battery holder. The embodiment has the advantage that attaching the insulating end housings in an overmolding process enables more stable and faster manufacturing of the coin-shaped cell-type battery holder.
[0033] A third aspect of the invention relates to a printed circuit board comprising a coin-shaped cell type battery holder according to the first aspect of the invention.
[0034] For use cases or use situations that may occur in the method and are not explicitly described herein, provision may be made, in accordance with the method, for an error message and / or a prompt for a user to provide feedback to be issued and / or for a default setting and / or a predefined initial state to be set.
[0035] The invention also includes combinations of features of the described embodiments.

The main planes 5 may be arranged parallel to an XZ plane.
[0047] The two metal sheets 4 may be connected to each other at longitudinal ends 7 of the main planes 5, using two insulating end housings 8. The insulating end housings 8 may be arranged at a longitudinal distance 9. The insulating end housings 8 may comprise plastic or other insulating materials. The insulating end housings 8 may comprise PPA-GF30 / granules / SN 57917-7:2005-12 / Ultramid T KR4357 G6. The insulating end housings 8 may be attached to the metal sheets 4 at the longitudinal ends 7 in an overmolding procedure.
[0048] The metal sheets 4 may comprise elastic contact arms 10 in the battery receiving cavity. The elastic contact arms may protrude from the main planes 5 of the metal sheets 4. The elastic contact arms 10 may be configured to mechanically hold the coin-shaped cell battery 2 and to produce electrical contact with the coin-shaped cell battery 2. The metal sheets 4 may comprise retaining elements 11, at the lower side of the respective metal sheet 4, facing the printed circuit board 3. The retaining elements 11 may be configured to allow mechanical and electrical contact of the coin-shaped cell battery 2 at the printed circuit board 3.
[0049] The metal sheets 4 may include cutouts 12, wherein the cutouts 12 may be located at a base of the metal sheets 4. The insulating end housings 8 may include support members 14 projecting from one side of the insulating end housings 8 into the cavity for retaining the coin-cell battery. The insulating end housings 8 may include support members 13 projecting from the lower side of the insulating end housings 8 opposite the printed circuit board 3. The support members 13 may have different cross-sections. The support members 13 may be designed as pins configured to be arranged in corresponding through-holes of the printed circuit board 3.
[0050] The insulating end cases 8 may include slots 15, wherein the slots 15 may have an opening at the upper side of the insulating end cases and may protrude into the insulating end cases 8 over a slot length 16. [0053] Another possibility of fixing the coin-cell type battery holder 1 to the printed circuit board 3 is provided by the retaining elements 11, at the base of the metal sheets 4. The retaining elements 11 can be fixed to the printed circuit board 3 by soldering connection.
[0054] [Fig.3] shows a schematic illustration of a longitudinal sectional view through the coin cell type battery holder.
[0055] The longitudinal section cut extends through the insulating end housings 8. In the left portion of the insulating end housings 8 in [Fig. 3], the cut extends through a secondary plane 17 of one of the metal sheets 4 embedded in the insulating end housings 8. In the right portion of the insulating end housings 8 in [Fig. 3], the cut extends through the secondary plane 17 of the other of the metal sheets 4. An upper portion of the secondary plane 17 is inside the slot 15 of the insulating end housing 8, with a lower portion of the secondary plane 17 being embedded in the insulating end housing 8. Since the secondary plane 17 extends through the slot 15, it may be possible to fix the secondary plane 17 in a molding device during the production process.
[0056] [Fig.3] also shows a shape of the coin-shaped cell type battery 2 in the coin-shaped cell receiving cavity. The coin-shaped cell receiving cavity may be at least partially delimited by the metal sheets 4 and the insulating end cases 8. The supporting members 14 of the insulating end case 8 protruding into the coin-shaped cell receiving cavity can hold the coin-shaped cell type battery 2. Therefore, the coin-shaped cell type battery 2 may not be in contact with the printed circuit board 3. The coin-shaped cell type battery 2 can be kept at a distance from the printed circuit board 3.
[0057] The cutouts 12 allow insertion of a tool to lift the coin cell battery 2 out of the coin cell receiving cavity.
[0058] [Fig.4] shows a schematic illustration of the metal sheets of the coin cell type battery holder.
[0059] The metal sheets 4 may be L-shaped. The L-shape may be formed by the main planes 5 and the secondary planes 17. Each of the metal sheets 4 may include one of the secondary planes 17 at one longitudinal end of the main plane 5. The other of the longitudinal ends of the main plane 5 may not include the secondary plane 17. The metal sheets 4 may be arranged rotated by 180 degrees, with a transverse distance between the main planes 5. The metal sheets 4 may have the same dimensions.
[0060] [Fig.4] may show an arrangement of the metal sheets in a molding device configured to manufacture the two insulating end housings. The metal sheets may be secured in the molding device at their secondary planes.
[0061] [Fig.5] shows another schematic illustration of the metal sheets of the coin cell type battery holder.
[0062] [Fig.6] shows a schematic illustration of a method for producing a coin-shaped cell type battery holder.
[0063] In a step S1, the two metal sheets 4 may be arranged at a transverse distance 6 from each other along a transverse direction of the coin-shaped cell-type battery holder 1. The two metal sheets 4 may be arranged as shown in [Fig. 3] and [Fig. 4]. The two metal sheets 4 may be fixed in a molding device at the secondary planes 17 of the metal sheets 4.
[0064] In a step S2, the insulating end housings may be attached to the metal sheets 4 by the molding device in an overmolding procedure.
[0065] The PCB space required for the button cell is large and the available space is small. The smallest dimension of the PCB is defined by the environment, by the quantity of components that a PCB is equipped with due to the multitude of functions required, the available space on the PCB decreases. Many devices require a backup battery, in most cases the battery is a coin cell type battery that requires a lot of space on the PCB. Vertical positioning solves the space problem, creating a robust support by overmolding, as in the invention itself. In a particular assembly, another advantage is the metal sheet that is mirrored (a single type of metal sheet). Vertical mounting solves the space problem. Part of a solution is to overmold a robust vertical support.
[0066] This bracket solves the space problem by vertical positioning of this robust overmolded assembly. The use of an overmolding process gives the assembly more rigidity than a conventional idea such as a simple metal sheet. This bracket solves the space problem due to the vertical positioning of the assembly. The stability in the environment with the PCB is kept under control thanks to the elements used for fixing and also for centering. In this particular assembly, another advantage from the budgetary point of view is the metal sheet which is mirrored (in the assembly, two metal sheets are used, but in reality there is only one which is mirrored). The rigidity of the assembly is high due to the overmolding technology used compared to a conventional idea such as a simple metal sheet.
[0067] The presented idea can be used in various technical fields, not only in automotive: different types of memory, ECU, home electronics, children's gadgets, all areas where a PCB requires a battery. [Fig.l] shows the whole assembly, in ISO view. The visual anti-error marking + / - for battery mounting is shown. In [Fig.2], the anti-error domes as well as the PCB are shown, as are the four arms for surface mounting (SMD) on the PCB. In [Fig.3], a section is shown in which two stops can be seen that hold the battery in place to prevent it from sliding off the PCB. Four other arms are used to hold the battery in place like a sandwich. [Fig.4] shows the space required for a conventional battery holder (right case) compared to the new vertical holder.
[0068] Overall, the example shows how a vertical battery holder for a coin cell type battery is provided by the invention.
