Description

Title of the invention: FOAMING CLEANING COMPOSITION DOMAIN

[0001] The present invention relates to a foaming cleansing composition. CONTEXT

[0002] Conventional cleaning systems utilize sulfate surfactants and amphoteric surfactants to increase viscosity via surfactant interaction. These ingredient combinations provide entangled, elongated micelles that provide a favorable surfactant ratio, pH status, and electrolyte and salt levels to accomplish cleaning. There are challenges in replacing sulfate surfactants with more naturally derived surfactants such as amino acid surfactants and other biosurfactants such as glycolipids. These naturally derived surfactants are known to have size characteristics less favorable for micelle formation and may be less sensitive to salt. For these reasons, naturally derived systems that do not use sulfate surfactants require the inclusion of thickeners, e.g., PEG-type polymeric thickeners, and a multiplicity of surfactants. These formulations are less desirable at least for the reason that the compositions have undesirable sensory properties and may be thick and gel-like rather than a smooth liquid. In addition, such formulations may be disadvantageous due to the inclusion of synthetic, non-organic, or naturally derived ingredients, including ingredients with suspected toxicity.

[0003] The inventors have formulated an innovative technology that overcomes the shortcomings of the prior art to provide high-performance cleaners with desirable foaming and cleaning properties without the use of sulfate surfactants and added thickeners, particularly PEG-type polymeric thickeners. It is believed that the unique blend of surfactants in the foaming cleaning composition provides entangled elongated type micelles to accomplish cleaning and provide foaming without the disadvantages of the art. summary

[0214] Example 3: Comparison of foaming between the inventive and comparative compositions

[0215] For foaming analysis, a dynamic foam analyzer (Kruss DFA100) was used. Each composition evaluated was diluted 25x to evaluate foaming performance. Foam was generated by mechanical agitation during the first 20 seconds and foam stability was monitored during the next 180 seconds. The results are shown in Table 4, below.

[0216] [Table 4] Table 4: Foam analysis for the inventive and comparative compositions Formulation Foam height Average initial bubble size Average final bubble size INV4 83.3 mm 52 um 59 um COMP #1 75.3 mm 51 um 70 um COMP #2 50.6 mm 51 um 61 um

[0217] Foaming Analysis Performance: The inventive composition, INV 4, demonstrated greater foam height compared to both comparative reference formulations. Specifically with respect to COMP #1, the comparative composition demonstrated similar initial foam density / size and height compared to composition INV 4, but the foam broke down more quickly (i.e., bubbles merged and enlarged with fewer bubbles) and the foam height declined over time proving foam instability. Example 4: Viscosity Evaluation

[0218] Each of the compositions including INV 4 and COMP #2 (Reference #2) and COMP #2 (Reference #2) was evaluated in terms of viscosity. The viscosity of COMP #2 is much higher than that of any of the inventives, the viscosity of COMP #2 being about 75 to 80 M3, in comparison, the viscosity of INV 4 is ~20 M3. In particular, COMP #2 has a gel texture, while INV 4, representative of all the inventives herein, is a smooth viscous liquid, without a gel or jelly texture. In various embodiments, the viscosity of the inventive composition may range from about 20 M3 to about 70 M3, and thus may have a viscosity of about 20 M3, 22, 24, 26, 28, 30, 32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44, 46, 48, 50, 52, 54, 56, 58, 60, 62, 64, 66, 68 to about 70 M3. Embodiments of the inventive composition with a higher viscosity include less than 50% of carboxyl / non-amphoteric surfactant fraction.Even at higher viscosity, the composition differs from the reference in its smooth character and not in gel form. Niacinamide contributes / may contribute to the reduction of viscosity.

[0219] Example 5: Effect of surfactants with a carboxyl group

[0220] The results of a study evaluating the effect of various surfactants with a group carboxyl relative to all surfactants are shown below in Table 5.

[0221] [Table 5] Table 5: Various surfactants with a carboxyl group compared to all surfactants Ingredient INV 5 (INV 4 @~2% sodium lauroyl sar-cosinate and ~10% glycerin) INV 4 INV 6 (INV 4 @0% sodium lauroyl sar-cosinate and ~3% methyl INV 7 (INV 4 @~1% sodium lauroyl sar-cosinate) INV 8 (INV 4 @~2% sodium lauroyl sarcosinate and ~3% sodium oleoyl taurate) sodium methyl oleoyl taurate) cocamidopropyl hydroxysultaine 7 7 7 7 7 Sodium lauroyl sar-cosinate 2 3 0 1 2 sodium methyl oleoyl taurate 2 2 3 2 3 Foam high high low medium high Viscosity 18 18 18 Too low to be measured 21 fraction of surfactant with a carboxyl group / non-amphoteric 50% 60% 0% 33% 40%

[0222] The above demonstrates that suitable viscosity and foaming are obtained when the fraction of surfactant with a carboxyl group represents at least 40% or more of the total amount of non-amphoteric surfactant.

[0223] Example 6: Effect of polymer thickener on formulation properties

[0224] The results of a study evaluating the effect of the polymer on the properties of formulation clarity (visualized by eye), foaming and texture upon application (good means creamy, thick and smooth, not gel-like) are shown below in Table 6.

[0225] [Table 6]Table 6: Comparison of inventives with the commercial reference Composition Viscosity (M3) Clarity Foaming Texture COMP #1 33 Clear Good Good INV 1 18 Clear Comparable Comparable INV2 14 Clear Comparable Comparable INV 3 18 Slightly translucent Comparable Comparable INV 4 18 Clear Comparable Comparable

[0226] The foregoing demonstrates that the foaming and texturizing properties can be accomplished in the absence of added thickeners to achieve a visibly clear (as observed by the naked eye), good foaming composition with a smooth, rich texture that is not similar to a jelly or gel. It is believed by the inventors, without being bound by theory, that rather than relying on a polymeric thickener, the inventive composition includes a surfactant system that builds viscosity by self-assembly of surfactant molecules. By adjusting the surfactant ratio, as shown in Example 5, the structure of the surfactant aggregates or the curvature of the surfactant micelle can be altered to provide non-spherical, entangled, elongated micelles.Additionally, the inclusion of niacinamide, as noted in Example 4, present in a range of about 0.05% to about 5.0%, by weight of the composition, can influence the maintenance of the viscosity properties of the composition, and participates in the adjustment (tuning) of the viscosity to achieve viscosity in a range of about 20 M3 to about 70 M3.

[0227] Example 7: Comparative in vitro sensory study

[0228] The inventive composition INV 4 and the comparative composition COMP #1 were tested with clinical subjects to provide evidence of sensory peculiarities. The results are shown below in Table 7.

[0229] [Table 7]Table 7: Results of the sensory study Performance / Sensory Features Evaluated Performance of Test Compositions Appearance INV 4 had a more fluid and less elastic appearance than COMP #1. Fixation No difference. Spreading on wet hands INV 4 had more fusion with water and a less slippery start than COMP #1. Application on the face INV 4 had lower coverage and thickness than COMP #1. Rinsing off the face INV 4 had a higher squeak intensity and squeak speed than COMP #1. Skin finish in 2 minutes No difference. Skin finish 2 minutes later No difference. Foam Performance INV 4 exhibited lower foam speed, foam density, foam volume, and smaller bubble size than COMP #1.

[0230] The results demonstrate that the inventive composition performs at least as well as the commercial reference and exhibits more desirable foaming and texture / viscosity properties.
