Description

Title of the invention: Device for handling items contained in a glove box by forming a double sealed wall, Associated glove box. technical field

[0001] The present invention relates to the field of glove boxes, and more particularly to devices for handling items contained in a glove box. Previous technique

[0002] A glove box is a hermetically sealed enclosure, at least one of whose walls is transparent, the hermetically sealed enclosure being suitable for handling substances and objects in a controlled atmosphere. Glove boxes are particularly useful when the substances or objects to be handled are harmful to humans or are contaminable, as is the case, for example, in the nuclear, chemical, pharmaceutical, and medical fields.

[0003] A glove box has at least one through-opening in one of its walls, in which a flexible sleeve is intended to be sealed, in order to access the products and equipment inside the glove box. The flexible sleeve ensures the maintenance of a controlled atmosphere within the enclosure by forming a hermetic barrier through which the contents of the enclosure can be handled.

[0004] Usually, the soft sleeve is a glove to receive an operator's hand.

[0005] Figure 1 illustrates part of a glove box 1 having a through opening 2 in which a glove 3 is mounted in a sealed manner. The mounting of the glove 3 in the opening 2 is ensured by a housing ring 4 fixed to the wall 5 delimiting the housing by pinching with a screw-nut system 6.

[0006] A support ring 7 is removably mounted on the enclosure ring 4. The end of the glove 3 is provided with a ridge 8 which fits between the support ring 7 and the enclosure ring 4. The support ring 7 compresses the ridge 8 against the enclosure ring 4, thus ensuring a tight seal. It is also known in the prior art to secure gloves in the opening of a glove box by means of a support ring and an enclosure ring, said gloves being free of a ridge and the seal being ensured by gaskets.

[0007] A locking ring 9 allows the support ring 7 to be locked with the enclosure ring 4.

[0008] The manipulation of items contained in a glove compartment using a glove, such as that the one illustrated in [Fig.1] remains dangerous for an operator.

[0009] Indeed, there are risks of accidents that could break the seal of the glove box and thus expose the operator to the harmful elements contained within. In particular, there is a risk of puncturing the glove during handling.

[0010] Although the glove box is opaque to alpha and beta radiation, gamma radiation can be transmitted through the glove. Therefore, glove boxes using a glove as a flexible sleeve do not offer optimal protection for handling radioactive materials by an operator.

[0011] Furthermore, certain tasks involving the handling of items contained in a glove box by an operator are tedious, for example, preventive maintenance and / or cleaning tasks. Performing these tedious tasks reduces the working time available for other, higher value-added tasks.

[0012] In order to overcome at least some of the aforementioned disadvantages, a robotic arm or a telemanipulator can be used for the manipulation of elements contained in a glove box.

[0013] However, standard glove boxes are not suitable for housing a robotic arm entirely within their enclosure. In particular, the interior of glove boxes is generally cramped and can be cluttered with numerous objects. Furthermore, a robotic arm may not be suitable for withstanding the confined atmosphere of glove boxes, which can be corrosive, dusty, and / or radioactive. Moreover, maintaining a robotic arm housed entirely inside a glove box would prove very complex.

[0014] It is therefore preferable to place the robotic arm outside the glove box and insert it into the flexible sleeve, which is where appropriate a protective sleeve for the robotic arm, in order to manipulate the elements inside the glove box.

[0015] Similarly, given the operation of a telemanipulator, for these same manipulation needs, it is necessary to arrange a master arm of the telemanipulator outside the glove box and to insert a slave arm into the flexible sleeve, which is where appropriate a protective sleeve for the slave arm.

[0016] Like a glove, the protective sleeve ensures the maintenance of a controlled atmosphere within the glove box by forming a hermetic barrier between the inside of the box and the robotic arm or telemanipulator. Furthermore, the protective sleeve protects the robotic arm or telemanipulator from the confined atmosphere. Generally, mounting the protective sleeve in an opening of a glove box is similar to mounting a glove, for example, the mounting of glove 3 illustrated in [Fig. 1].

[0017] Furthermore, even when using a robotic arm or a telemanipulator, there exists There is always a risk of the protective sleeve being punctured. If this occurs, the controlled atmosphere of the glove box is no longer guaranteed. Furthermore, a breach in the seal of a protective sleeve may go undetected for an extended period, even longer than the detection time for a glove leak. This is because the operator may notice a puncture during handling, or the leak may be detected during an inspection when the operator leaves the work area containing the glove box. These leak detection methods are unsuitable for a protective sleeve into which a robotic arm or a slave arm of a telemanipulator is inserted for several days, as they cannot be implemented frequently enough.

[0018] Furthermore, sealed penetration systems used in shielded cells, particularly in the nuclear sector, are known. These systems are implemented, for example, for transmission between the master and slave arms of a remote manipulator. However, these systems are not suitable for glove boxes, as they require a thick wall that must withstand significant mechanical stresses, which is not the case for the walls of a glove box.

[0019] There is therefore a need for improvement of devices for handling items contained in a glove box, in particular which overcome the aforementioned disadvantages.

[0020] In particular, there is a need for such a device which best guarantees the containment of the controlled atmosphere of the glove box.

[0021] The object of the invention is to meet, at least in part, this need(s). Description of the invention

[0022] To this end, the invention relates to a device for handling items contained in a glove box, comprising: - a speaker ring adapted to be fixed to the edge of a through opening made in a wall (16) of the glove box, - a hermetically sealed protective sleeve including an open end, - a support ring on which the airtight protective sleeve is mounted, the support ring being adapted to fit into the enclosure ring, so as to fix the protective sleeve to the enclosure ring in an airtight manner, - a robotic arm or a slave arm of a telemanipulator including a shutter, the robotic arm or the slave arm being adapted to fit into the protective sleeve with the shutter which hermetically seals the open end of the protective sleeve.

[0023] Preferably, the device includes a locking ring to lock the support ring when fitted into the enclosure ring.

[0024] Preferably, the robotic arm or slave arm is mounted on a support for taking up forces exerted by the robotic arm or slave arm, the support being adapted to be fixed to the floor, to a partition of a structure, such as a wall or to the ceiling.

[0025] Preferably, the device includes a pressure sensor intended to be arranged in the protective sleeve closed by the shutter to detect a change in pressure in the sealed volume delimited by the protective sleeve and the shutter.

[0026] Preferably, the shutter comprises a base, a hermetic collar fixed tightly around the base and a means for fixing the collar tightly to the support ring.

[0027] Preferably, the collar is made of flexible polymer, preferably polyurethane or polyvinyl chloride.

[0028] Preferably, the collar includes an inner bead housed by being compressed in a groove formed in the base.

[0029] Preferably, the fixing means is a support ring on which the collar is mounted, the support ring being adapted to fit into the support ring, so as to fix the collar to the support ring in a watertight manner.

[0030] Preferably, the support ring is adapted to compress the collar against the support ring so as to ensure the seal between the collar and the support ring, the collar preferably comprising an external bead housed in a groove provided in the support ring and adapted to be compressed against the support ring.

[0031] The invention also relates to a glove box comprising: - a through opening made in one of its walls, - a device according to the present invention, the enclosure ring being fixed on the edge of the through opening and the support ring being fitted into the enclosure ring by fixing the hermetic protective sleeve to the enclosure ring in a hermetic manner.

[0032] Preferably, the box includes a spacer adapted to be assembled, preferably by a bayonet-type fixing, with the support ring and the base of the device's shutter so as to maintain a radial spacing, preferably constant, between the support ring and the base.

[0033] Preferably, the box includes an insertion sleeve to guide the shutter in translation when it is inserted into the airtight protective sleeve, preferably the insertion sleeve being configured to keep the shutter concentric with the support ring.

[0034] Preferably, the insertion sleeve includes a mechanism capable of exerting a thrust force on the shutter, preferably the mechanism transforming a rotational movement of a flywheel into a translational movement.

[0035] The present invention therefore essentially consists of proposing a sealing of the open end of a protective sleeve when inserting a robotic arm or a slave arm inside it, within a glove box.

[0036] Thus, the device according to the invention makes it possible to handle the items contained in a glove box while creating a double airtight barrier between the controlled atmosphere of the glove box and the external environment. The first airtight barrier is formed by the protective sleeve, and the second airtight barrier is formed by a shutter that hermetically seals the open end of the protective sleeve.

[0037] Thus, in the event of a break in the seal of the protective sleeve, the containment of the controlled atmosphere of the glove box is always ensured by the shutter.

[0038] Unlike prior art devices, the containment of the controlled atmosphere does not rely on a single wall, which can be relatively fragile and subject to a significant risk of perforation. Furthermore, the wall formed by the shutter is not subject to the risks of perforation and / or tearing, in particular because it does not come into contact with the handled elements.

[0039] The manipulation of the items contained in a glove box can be carried out by the robotic arm or the slave arm of the device according to the invention. This eliminates the drawbacks and risks associated with handling by an operator using a glove.

[0040] Furthermore, advantageously, with the device according to the invention, the mechanical forces of the robotic arm or the slave arm are not taken up by a wall of the glove box.

[0041] Furthermore, the device is compatible with existing glove boxes and therefore does not require any modification to them for installation. In particular, the enclosure ring, the support ring, and the protective sleeve can be similar to those already existing for mounting a protective sleeve in the opening of a glove box. Specifically, they can conform to existing standards according to ISO 11933-1.

[0042] The device according to the invention is simple and quick to install on a glove box. In particular, the device is suitable for replacing a worn glove or protective sleeve with a new protective sleeve without breaking the controlled atmosphere. Brief description of the drawings

Detailed description

[0048] Fig. 1 has already been described in the preamble and will therefore not be described thereafter.

[0049] For the sake of clarity, the different elements of the figures are represented in Free scale, the actual dimensions of the different parts are not necessarily respected.

[0050] Figure 2 illustrates a glove box 10 having a through opening 11 and a device 12 according to the invention for handling elements contained in the glove box 10, which is mounted in a sealed manner through the through opening.

[0051] The device 12 includes a speaker ring 13, a support ring 14 and a protective sleeve 15.

[0052] The enclosure ring 13 is fixed by pinching or by welding to a wall 16 of the glove box 10 around the opening 11.

[0053] The protective sleeve 15 is mounted in a sealed manner at its open end on the support ring 14, itself 14 fitted in a sealed manner into the enclosure ring 13.

[0054] The support ring 14 can be clipped into the speaker ring 13.

[0055] The device 12 also includes a locking ring 17 which ensures the fixed retention of the support ring 14 fitted into the enclosure ring 13.

[0056] The watertight mounting of the protective sleeve 15 in the opening 11 can be according to existing standards according to ISO 11933-1.

[0057] For example, as illustrated in [Fig.2], the protective sleeve 15 may include a bead 18 at its open end inserted in a sealed manner into the support ring 14, the seal between the support ring 14 and the enclosure ring 13 then being ensured by a lip seal 19 on the outer periphery of the support ring 14.

[0058] According to another example, the mounting of the protective sleeve 15 in the opening 11 can be similar to that illustrated in [Fig.1].

[0059] The device 12 also includes a robotic arm 20 inserted into the protective sleeve 15 so that it can manipulate items contained in the glove box 10.

[0060] The robotic arm 20 includes at its base a shutter 21 which hermetically seals the open end of the protective sleeve 15. The shutter 21 is surrounded by the support ring 14. Thus, the rest of the robotic arm 20 is housed in a hermetically sealed volume defined between the protective sleeve 15 and the shutter 21. In the event of a puncture in the protective sleeve 15, the seal of the robotic arm 20 within the glove box 10 is still ensured by the shutter 21.

[0061] A pressure sensor can be housed in the aforementioned hermetically sealed volume and thus advantageously detect any leak and therefore detect the perforation of the protective sleeve 15.

[0062] The shutter 21 includes a base 22, on which the rest of the robotic arm 19 is mounted, and a hermetic collar 23, fixed tightly around the base 22.

[0063] The outer periphery of the collar 23 is fixed in a sealed manner to the support ring 14.

[0064] Thus, the base 22 partially closes the open end of the protective sleeve 15 and the collar 23 tightly closes the space between the base 22 and the support ring 14.

[0065] The collar 23 has the shape of a hollowed-out disc. The inner periphery of the collar 23 includes an inner bead 24 housed by being compressed within the base 22, which improves the sealing of the collar 23's attachment around the base 20. In particular, the base 22 may include two plates sandwiching the inner bead 24.

[0066] The shutter 21 may include a support ring 25 as a means of fixing the collar 23 with the support ring 14. The outer periphery of the collar 23 is fixed to the support ring 25. In particular, the outer periphery of the collar 23 includes an outer bead 26 housed in a groove formed in the outer periphery of the support ring 25.

[0067] The support ring 25 is fitted into the support ring 14 by pressing the flange 23 against the support ring 14. In particular, the support ring 24 can be pressed into the support ring 14 and bear against a stop on the support ring 14 projecting inwards. Alternatively, the support ring 14 may include an internal radial groove and the support ring 25 may include a rib on its outer periphery so as to clip the support ring 25 into the support ring 14.

[0068] The collar 23 is sandwiched between the stop and the support ring 24.

[0069] The outer bead 26 is compressed against the inner wall of the support ring 14 by the support ring 25. The outer bead 26 thus improves the sealing of the attachment of the collar 23 with the support ring 14.

[0070] The robotic arm 20 is mounted on a support 27 independent of the glove box 10 and adapted to bear the forces exerted by the robotic arm 20 on the ground. Thus, the robotic arm 20 does not transmit any mechanical force to the wall 16 of the glove box 10.

[0071] This support 27 can be adapted to be fixed to the floor, to a partition of a structure, such as a wall or to the ceiling.

[0072] This support 27 can also be mobile relative to the glove box 10, for example the support 27 can include casters, preferably casters with brakes.

[0073] The support 27 may include a lifting means for vertically moving the robotic arm 20 relative to the ground and the glove box 10. This makes it possible to adjust the height of the robotic arm 20 according to the height of the opening 11 relative to the ground. This lifting means may, for example, include a telescopic column and / or a hydraulic cylinder.

[0074] The support 27 may include a fastening means configured to removably attach the support 27 to the chassis of the glove box 10.

[0075] Figures 3 to 7 show different steps of a method for placing a protective sleeve 152, of a device 12 according to the invention, in a glove box 10. The method for placing the protective sleeve 152 in a glove box 10 is similar to the standard procedures according to ISO 11933-1.

[0076] The new protective sleeve 152 is put in place by replacing another protective sleeve 151, which is worn or a glove 3.

[0077] Thus, as illustrated in [Fig.3], a used protective sleeve 151, to be replaced, is mounted in a sealed manner in an opening 11 of a glove box 10.

[0078] Figure 4 shows the removal of the locking ring 17 to proceed with the rem placement of the used protective sleeve 151.

[0079] This removal is followed by the insertion of the new protective sleeve 152 by fitting a new support ring 142 into the enclosure ring 13, the new support ring 142 pushing the old support ring 141 until it falls inside the glove box 10. This insertion step, illustrated in figures 5 and 6, makes it possible to maintain the confinement of the controlled atmosphere in the glove box 10.

[0080] Insertion can be achieved using an insertion sleeve, not shown here. An insertion sleeve is also referred to as an "ejection barrel" in technical terms.

[0081] The support ring 142 to be inserted and the new protective sleeve 152 are put into The insert sleeve is placed in the insertion sleeve. The insertion sleeve is locked onto the speaker ring 13, and then the sleeve is screwed in, which inserts the support ring 142 into the speaker ring 13. Once the sleeve reaches its stop, the insertion of the new support ring 142 and the new protective sleeve 152 is complete. The insertion sleeve can be configured so that at the end of its travel, in the stop position, the support ring 142 clips into the speaker ring 13. The insertion sleeve is then unscrewed from the speaker ring 13 and removed.

[0082] Once the support ring 142 is fitted into the enclosure ring 13, the locking ring 17 is put back in place, thus locking the support ring 142 in the enclosure ring 13, as shown in [Fig.7].

[0083] Figures 8 to 14 show different stages of a method for placing a robotic arm 20 in a protective sleeve 15, of a device 12 according to the invention.

[0084] Initially, as shown in [Fig.8], the support ring 25 is only connected to the base 22 by the collar 23. Therefore, the support ring 25 hangs down, resting against the base 22. The gap between the support ring 25 and the base 22 is therefore not constant.

[0085] In order to maintain a constant radial spacing between the support ring 25 and the base 22, facilitating the fitting of the support ring 25 into the support ring 14, the support ring 25 is fixed to a spacer 28.

[0086] To do this, the spacer 28 may include pins 29 and the support ring 25 may include grooves 30 formed within it, the pins 29 and the grooves 30 constituting a bayonet fastening system, which allows the support ring 25 to be fixed to the spacer 28.

[0087] The spacer 28 is arranged concentrically with respect to the base 22. The support ring 25 then has a constant radial spacing with the base 22 and the collar 23 is stretched uniformly.

[0088] The spacer 28 can also be attached to the base 22, for example by a bayonet fitting. Alternatively, the spacer 28 may not be attached to the base 22, and may, for example, be in the form of a sleeve surrounding the base 22.

[0089] The assembly of the spacer 28 is followed by the placement of a shutter 21 and the spacer 28 in an insertion sleeve 31, as illustrated in [Fig.10].

[0090] The insertion sleeve 31 is then positioned around the enclosure ring 13, coming to rest against the enclosure ring 13 or against the wall 16 of the glove box 10.

[0091] Fig. 11 shows the insertion sleeve 31 positioned around the enclosure ring 13. The shutter 21 is then centered with respect to the enclosure ring 13 and the support ring 14. This prevents the shutter 21 from pushing the support ring 14 when it is inserted into the latter.

[0092] The robotic arm 20 is inserted into the protective sleeve 15 and then the shutter 21 is translated into the support ring 14 while being guided by the insertion sleeve 31.

[0093] Figure 12 illustrates the translation of the shutter 21 in the support ring 14. To facilitate the insertion of the robotic arm 20, the support 27 includes rollers 32. The translation of the shutter 21 can be achieved by pushing the spacer 28. In particular, the spacer 28 may include a threaded rod 33 to be screwed into the body of the insertion sleeve 31, for example using a handwheel not shown here.

[0094] As shown in [Fig. 13], the translation of the shutter 21 stops when the support ring 25 comes to rest against a stop on the inwardly projecting support ring 14. The shutter 21 then seals the protective sleeve 15 tightly. Alternatively, the threaded rod 33 or the insertion sleeve 31 may include a stop at which the threaded rod 33 is locked and cannot be screwed further into the insertion sleeve 31, thus stopping the thrust of the spacer 28.

[0095] Once the robotic arm 20 is inserted into the protective sleeve 15 with the seal made by the shutter 21, the support 27 is fixed relative to the glove box 10. For example, the support 27 may include a means of fixing to the chassis of the glove box 10 and / or the casters 32 may include brakes which are engaged.

[0096] The insertion sleeve 31 can then be removed. Then, the spacer 28 can also be removed, in particular by rotation, for example by a quarter turn, as illustrated in [Fig. 14].

[0097] If the protective sleeve 15 is intact and therefore still ensures the confinement of the controlled atmosphere of the glove box 10, the removal of the robotic arm 20 from the protective sleeve 15 and from the inside of the glove box 10 can be carried out by performing, in reverse order, the steps of the insertion process described previously.

[0098] Once the robotic arm 20 has been removed, the protective sleeve 15 can be replaced with a new protective sleeve 15 or a glove 3 similarly to the method illustrated in Figures 3 to 7.

[0099] If the protective sleeve 15 is punctured, then the confinement of the controlled atmosphere of the glove box 10 is guaranteed as long as the shutter 21 closes the protective sleeve 15.

[0100] If necessary, at least two methods of replacing the protective sleeve 15 are conceivable.

[0101] A first replacement method consists of pushing the assembly comprising the support ring 14, the protective sleeve 15 and the robotic arm 20 into the glove box 10, after removing the locking ring 17. This pushing is carried out if Simultaneously with the fitting of the new support ring 14, on which a glove 3 or a new protective sleeve 15 is mounted, into the enclosure ring 13. This first method includes, prior to pushing the assembly, a disconnection step between the robotic arm 20 and the support 27. This first method can be carried out similarly to the method described for Figures 3 to 7. Once pushed inside the glove box 10, the robotic arm 20 is considered as waste that can be disposed of.

[0102] A second replacement method involves removing the robotic arm 20 from the protective sleeve 15 followed by replacing the protective sleeve 15 using a standard method for replacing a punctured glove. The robotic arm 20 can then be decontaminated for reuse.

[0103] Other variants and improvements may be envisaged without departing from the scope of the invention.

[0104] For example, the robotic arm 20 can be replaced by a slave arm of a telemanipulator. If so, the base 22 of the shutter 21 can be adapted to transmit the movements of the master arm of the telemanipulator to the slave arm.

[0105] According to another example, the outer bead 26 can be inserted in a tight manner into the support ring 25 and the seal between the support ring 25 and the support ring can be ensured by a lip seal surrounding the support ring 25.
