Abstract
Description
Title of the invention: Syringe container adapter, double cap with syringe adapter, corresponding container and sampling method
[0001] The present invention relates to a syringe container adapter and a double stopper for a syringe container adapter. It also relates to a container comprising such an adapter or such a double stopper. It also relates to a method for withdrawing, using a syringe, a fluid contained in such a container.
[0002] The invention applies more particularly to a syringe container adapter, comprising: - a main body, having a lateral conformation suitable for forcing its way into a container opening while also conforming to the complementary shape of an internal lateral wall of that container opening; and - a through hole, formed longitudinally in the main body, for the insertion of a syringe sampling tip.
[0003] Such an adapter is used in the healthcare field in general for the direct withdrawal of fluid from a container using a syringe with a sampling tip. However, besides the fact that it is designed only for certain very specific uses in a hospital setting, such as the withdrawal of medication or nutritional fluids for enteral feeding using a specific enteral syringe, it is also unsuitable for home use where hygiene protocols are generally not as strictly followed. For example, it is not suitable for a standard commercially available nasal syringe for saline solution, as this has a capacity of ten milliliters and a smaller diameter than that of an enteral syringe.
[0004] What currently exists for nasal irrigation for adults, children, or babies from six months of age is a container without a special adapter, in the form of a bottle of physiological saline solution, for example, containing 0.9% NaCl (sodium chloride), and a standard ten-milliliter syringe. The latter may optionally be fitted with a soft, detachable nasal tip for less aggressive contact with a baby's nostril and / or for hygiene reasons. Bottles of physiological saline solution, for example, those from the brands B. Braun, Fresenius, Versol, L2N Pharma, or Evolupharm (registered trademarks), are not generally marketed for use in nasal irrigation, with the exception of the L2N Pharma bottle, and are not designed to facilitate sampling using a nasal syringe, with the notable exception of the Evolupharm bottle which is supplied with a container or small pouring cup integrated into the external cap to transfer part of its contents before proceeding with sampling by syringe.
[0005] Historically, nasal irrigation was typically performed using five-milliliter vials. However, in recent years, as nasal syringes have become recommended by healthcare professionals in accordance with a new irrigation method deemed more effective in preventing contamination, some manufacturers who market bottles of saline solution for wound cleaning have taken advantage of this trend to sell bottles for nasal irrigation, without adapting them for this purpose, in particular without allowing direct dispensing from the bottle while respecting minimum hygiene and non-contamination rules.
[0006] As a result, most users today get into the habit of taking the physiological saline solution directly from the bottle or into a cup.
[0007] This raises two major problems: firstly, users may develop the bad habit of drawing up the solution with the syringe and its nasal tip, then returning it to the cup or bottle, contaminating the remaining saline solution; secondly, most users are already in the habit of pouring the solution into a container larger than the volume in the cup because this allows them to draw up more than one dose with a single syringe, thus increasing the risk of waste. This also often results in contamination of the solution by the syringe's nasal tip, thereby increasing the risk of contamination for the person—adult, child, or baby—receiving the nasal injection. Furthermore, young children may be restless during nasal irrigation, which can lead to the saline solution bottle being spilled.Furthermore, it is not easy to take the desired quantity directly from the bottle when it is far from full.
[0008] It may therefore be desirable to provide a syringe container adapter which makes it possible to overcome at least some of the aforementioned problems and constraints.
[0009] A container adapter for a syringe is therefore proposed, comprising: - a main body, having a lateral conformation suitable for forcing its way into a container opening while being adapted to the complementary shape of an inner lateral wall of this container opening; - a through hole, formed longitudinally in the main body, for the insertion of a syringe sampling tip; and - a cap with a head, or cap, attached to the main body, having an insertion pin shaped to forcefully enter the through hole and seal it tightly.
[0010] Thus, the adapter constitutes an easily manipulated internal stopper that selectively allows the insertion of a syringe sampling tip when open and seals the container opening when closed. Furthermore, it is within the capabilities of a person skilled in the art to design it according to the standard of the syringes used, for example, ten-milliliter syringes with a flexible, detachable nasal tip for nasal irrigation, so that it ensures optimal, secure, and airtight sampling, i.e., without risk of contamination, leakage, or waste. In other words, it is within the capabilities of a person skilled in the art to size the through hole, particularly its diameter, to be suitable for the size of the intended syringes, especially the diameter of their sampling tip. Finally, such an adapter can be easily added to the standard screw cap of any known physiological saline bottle, thus ensuring a double seal of the container to which this addition relates.
[0011] The following objectives are therefore met in particular for a particular non-limiting application of nasal washing: avoid any risk of contamination of the physiological serum contained in the bottle, facilitate the filling of nasal syringes, in particular those of ten millilitres, prevent the contents of the container from spilling during nasal washing (for example between the treatment of two nostrils) or during transport, carry out a nasal wash safely, avoid waste.
[0012] Furthermore, in the particular case of an adapter design conforming to the standard for syringes with a detachable nasal tip, any contact between the nasal tip and the contents of the container can be avoided, because the device requires that the nasal tip in contact with the nasal mucosa be removed in order to safely collect this content using the syringe collection tip.
[0013] Optionally, the cap with head, or cap, has a head configured as a circular disc forming a valve, or a circular base forming a lid, in the center of which the insertion pin extends in a direction essentially normal to this circular disc, or circular base.
[0014] Optionally also, the cap with head, in particular the head of the cap with head, and the main body are connected to each other by a flexible tab, or ribbon, the whole being formed of the same elastic material by molding.
[0015] Optionally also, the lateral conformation of the main body includes a general cylindrical shape for press-fit insertion into a corresponding cylindrical neck of the container opening, for example by means of at least one press-fit collar.
[0016] Also optionally: - the main body has an outer diameter, excluding the neck(s), adapted to the inner diameter of a bottle or flask neck, for example between 22.2 mm and 23 mm, preferably equal to 22.6 mm + / - 0.1 mm for a conventional physiological saline bottle; and - the through hole has a diameter suitable for that of a syringe sampling tip, for example between 3.9 mm and 4 mm, preferably equal to 3.95 mm + / - 0.03 mm for a conventional nasal syringe with a capacity of ten millilitres.
[0017] Optionally also, the main body has a curved face, in particular with a concave, linear or convex slope, intended to be oriented towards the outside of the opening of the container, in the bottom of which the through hole is drilled, this curved face being configured to receive as a stop the head of the cap when the insertion pin extends into the through hole.
[0018] A double cap with a syringe container adapter is also proposed, intended to seal an opening in the container, comprising: - a syringe container adapter according to the present invention, forming a first inner stopper of this double stopper; and - a second external plug intended to cooperate with an external side wall of the opening to seal it while covering the first internal plug.
[0019] Optionally, the second outer cap has an internal thread cooperating with an external thread of the container opening.
[0020] Also proposed is a container, containing or intended to contain a fluid to be taken by syringe, comprising an opening and an adapter according to the present invention, or a double cap with adapter according to the present invention.
[0021] A method for withdrawing, using a syringe, a fluid contained in a container according to the present invention is also proposed, comprising the following steps: - unscrewing, if necessary, the second outer cap to release the opening of the container, removing the insertion pin of the first inner cap to release the through hole of the adapter and removing, if necessary, a detachable tip of the syringe to release its sampling tip; - forcefully inserting the syringe sampling tip into the through hole of the adapter from the top; - inverting the container and the syringe inserted in the adapter, then aspirating a desired amount of fluid using the syringe from the bottom; - invert the container and the syringe filled with the desired amount of fluid again, then remove the syringe from the top; - Force the insertion pin of the first inner cap into the through hole of the adapter, screw on, if necessary, the second outer cap to seal the opening of the container and, if necessary, position the detachable tip of the syringe on its sampling tip.
[0022] The invention will be better understood with the aid of the following description, given solely by way of example and made with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: - [Fig.1] schematically represents in perspective a syringe container adapter, according to a first embodiment of the present invention; - [Fig.2] schematically represents in lateral view the adapter of [Fig.1], including the indication of a set of dimensions compatible with the use of a standard nasal syringe and a commercial physiological saline bottle; - [Fig.3] schematically represents, in top view, the adapter of [Fig.1], with the same dimensions as those of [Fig.2]; - [Fig.4] schematically represents in perspective a syringe container adapter, according to a second embodiment of the present invention; - [Fig.5] schematically represents in side view and cuts the adapter of [Fig.4]; - [Fig.6] schematically represents the adapter of [Fig.4] from below; - [Fig.7] schematically represents, in front view, a double-capped container, according to an embodiment of the present invention; - [Fig.8] illustrates the successive steps of a process for collecting, using a syringe, a fluid contained in a container such as that of [Fig.7], according to an embodiment of the present invention; - [Fig.9A] illustrates a first step in the process of [Fig.8]; - Fig. 9B illustrates a first intermediate step in the process of Fig. 8 - Figure [9C] illustrates a second intermediate step in the process of the [Fig. 8]; and - [Fig.9D] illustrates a final step in the process of [Fig.8].
[0023] The adapter 10 shown in perspective in [Fig. 1] comprises a main body 12, essentially cylindrical in shape, corresponding to a complementary cylindrical shape of an inner lateral wall of a container opening into which it is intended to be press-fitted for a hermetic lateral sealing of the container. When the container is a bottle or flask, the main body 12 of the adapter 10 is thus shaped to press-fit into its opening neck. The press-fit insertion of the main body 12 into the container opening can be achieved by a negative clearance between its outer diameter and the inner diameter of the opening and / or by means of at least one collar formed as an annular projection on its cylindrical lateral wall. Two collars 14 and 16 are thus illustrated in [Fig. 1].
[0024] The main body 12 has a hollow circular base 18, not visible in [Fig. 1], intended to face inwards towards the container, and an opposite solid face 20, also circular but curved and intended to face outwards from the opening of the container. This curve may be concave, linear (i.e., frustoconical in cross-section), or convex. A through hole 22, formed longitudinally in the main body 12, is drilled at the bottom of this curve for the insertion of a syringe tip, for example, the tip of a nasal syringe. The curve facilitates the insertion of the nasal syringe tip into the through hole by guiding it towards this hole.
[0025] The adapter 10 further comprises a cap with a head 24 having: - an insertion pin 26 shaped to forcefully enter the through hole 22 of the main body 12 and seal it hermetically: the forceful insertion of this pin 26 can be achieved by a negative clearance between its outer diameter and the diameter of the through hole 22 and / or by means of at least one collar formed as an annular projection on its cylindrical lateral wall (a collar 28 is thus illustrated in [Fig. 1] in the middle of the insertion pin 26); and - a head configured as a circular disc 30 forming a flap, in the center of which extends the insertion pin 26 in a direction essentially normal to this circular disc 30.
[0026] The cap with head 24 is integral with the main body 12 by being connected to the latter by a flexible, ribbon-shaped tab 32 extending between the circular disc 30 and a peripheral collar 34 of the curved solid face 20 of the main body 12. The assembly consisting of the main body 12, the cap with head 24, and the flexible tab 32 is, for example, made of an elastic material and formed by molding. Transparent polypropylene is suitable but is not the only possible material.
[0027] In the open configuration of the adapter 10 as illustrated in [Fig. 1], the flexible tab 32 and the cap with head 24 extend laterally from The collar 34 is designed to abut against the opening of a container into which the rest of the main body 12 of the adapter 10 is inserted. In the closed configuration of the adapter 10, the flexible tab 32 is elastically folded back on itself, and the insertion pin 26 of the cap with head 24 is inserted into the through hole 22 to seal it hermetically. The head of the insertion pin 26, in its circular pellet configuration 30, abuts against the curved face 20 of the main body 12.This results in two advantages: the opening and closing of this first inner stopper formed by the adapter 10 is particularly simple and can be performed quickly with one hand, or even with one finger; in the closed configuration, the adapter 10 is particularly compact, so that it can itself be covered by a second conventional outer stopper designed to cooperate with an outer side wall of the opening of the container in question to seal it with double security.
[0028] A concrete example of the design and dimensions of the adapter 10 is illustrated in side view in [Fig. 2] and in top view in [Fig. 3]. It is designed to conform to the specific use of a conventional ten-milliliter nasal syringe and a commercially available physiological saline bottle. Such a nasal syringe has a predominantly cylindrical, but slightly frustoconical, sampling tip with an average diameter of approximately 4.2 mm. Such a commercially available physiological saline bottle is, for example, made of transparent polyethylene terephthalate (PET), has a capacity of half a liter, is cylindrical in shape, and has an internal neck opening diameter of approximately 22 mm with an external thread.
[0029] The main body 12 then has an outside diameter, excluding collars 14 and 16, of between 22.2 mm and 23 mm, preferably 22.6 mm + / - 0.1 mm to ensure negative clearance for press-fit insertion of the adapter 10 into the bottle neck. The collars 14 and 16 add a peripheral thickness of approximately 1 mm, or at most 2 mm, just sufficient to ensure airtight press-fit insertion into the container opening. The collar 34 has an outside diameter of between 24.2 mm and 25 mm, preferably 24.6 mm + / - 0.1 mm. The main body 12 further has a longitudinal thickness of between 10 mm and 11 mm, preferably equal to 10.4 mm + / - 0.1 mm, including a collar thickness 34 of about 1 mm, a distance between collar 34 and collar 16 of about 2.7 mm and a distance between the two collars 14, 16 of about 2.7 mm also.
[0030] The circular base 18 is hollowed out with a recess centered on an inner diameter between 17.5 mm and 18.5 mm, preferably equal to 18 mm + / - 0.1 mm, and on a depth of about 4.3 mm.
[0031] In the non-limiting example of [Fig. 2], the curved solid face 20 has a frustoconical cross-section, and therefore a linear slope. It extends from the inside of the collar 34, over a diameter of between 19.5 mm and 20.5 mm, preferably equal to 20 mm + / - 0.1 mm, and to a depth of approximately 3.7 mm from the outer face of the collar 34 at a slope of approximately 65°, at which depth it reaches the diameter of the through hole 22, which is between 3.9 mm and 4 mm, preferably equal to 3.95 mm + / - 0.03 mm, i.e. very slightly less than 4 mm to ensure no leakage between the bottle and the syringe. This results in a depth of approximately 2.4 mm for the through hole 22, which exhibits a negative clearance of approximately 0.25 mm compared to the average diameter of a standard nasal syringe sampling tip. The slightly truncated conical shape of such a sampling tip also allows for progressive forceful insertion into the through hole 22.
[0032] The flexible tongue 32 has a length of approximately 7.1 mm and a thickness of approximately 0.3 mm.
[0033] The cap with head 24 has a head (circular disc 30) of about 0.7 mm thick and 11.5 mm in diameter, as well as a cylindrical insertion pin with an outside diameter between 3.9 mm and 4 mm, preferably equal to 3.95 mm + / -0.03 mm, and a length of about 5.5 mm, including a distance between its free end and the collar 28 of about 2.3 mm.
[0034] The adapter 40 shown in perspective in [Fig. 4], in lateral view and in section AA in [Fig. 5], and in bottom view in [Fig. 6], differs slightly from that of Figures 1 to 3 in its profile. Its main body 42 has only one collar 44 near its flange 46 and features a narrowing R of external diameter near its circular base 48, for a more gradual press-fit insertion than in the previous embodiment. Otherwise, it is similar to the adapter 10, with a slight displacement of the collar 50 of its insertion pin 52 near its free end 54, which is frustoconical or rounded.
[0035] A container 60 containing or intended to contain a fluid to be taken by syringe, in particular a bottle of physiological saline, is illustrated in [Fig.7].
[0036] This bottle 60 is fitted with a double stopper 62 according to the present invention. This double stopper 62 includes a syringe container adapter such as that 10 or 40 of Figures 1 to 3 or 4 to 6, forming a first inner stopper 64 inserted tightly and hermetically into the opening neck 66 of the bottle 60. It further includes a second outer stopper 68 with an internal thread, intended to cooperate with an external thread 70 of the opening neck 66 to seal it while covering the first inner stopper 64.
[0037] An optimized method for withdrawing a fluid from a container using a syringe will now be detailed with reference to [Fig. 8], with the illustration of certain steps in figures 9A to 9D. It is described, more concretely but in a non-limiting way, for a collection of physiological serum in bottle 60 of [Fig.7] using a standard ten millilitre nasal syringe.
[0038] In a first step 100, the physiological saline bottle 60 and a standard syringe 72 with a flexible and detachable nasal tip 74 are provided. This step is illustrated by [Fig.9A].
[0039] During a preparation step 102, the second outer cap 68 is unscrewed from the neck 66 of the bottle 60 to release its opening, the insertion pin of the adapter forming the first inner cap 64 is removed from the through hole to release it and the detachable nasal tip 74 of the nasal syringe 72 is removed to release its sampling tip 76. The latter can then be brought close to the neck 66 of the bottle 60, as illustrated by [Fig.9B].
[0040] In a subsequent step 104, the sampling tip 76 of the nasal syringe 72 is forcibly inserted from above into the through hole of the adapter forming the first inner stopper 64.
[0041] Next, the bottle 60 and the nasal syringe 72 inserted into the through-hole are inverted, and then a desired quantity of physiological saline is aspirated from the bottom using the plunger of the nasal syringe 72. The execution of this step 106 is illustrated in [Fig. 9C]. Thanks to the inverting and the adapter, physiological saline can thus be drawn directly, without leakage or waste, regardless of the quantity of solution contained in the bottle 60.
[0042] In a subsequent step 108, the bottle 60 and the nasal syringe 72 inserted into the through hole and filled with the desired amount of physiological serum are turned upside down again, and then the nasal syringe 72 is removed from the top.
[0043] Finally, in a final step 110, the insertion pin of the adapter forming the first inner plug 64 is forced into the through hole to seal it, and the detachable nasal tip 74 is again placed on the sampling tip 76 of the nasal syringe 72 for use. This gives the situation shown in [Fig. 9D]. During this same step, if a further sampling of physiological saline is no longer desired, the second outer plug 68 can also be screwed back onto the neck 66 of the bottle 60. It should be noted that at no time can there be any contact between the nasal tip and the drawn physiological saline solution.
[0044] It is clear that a syringe container adapter such as one of those described above, and a syringe fluid sampling method such as that described with reference to [Fig.8], allow for simple, safe, hygienic and waste-free fluid sampling.
[0045] In particular, this innovation allows for the direct withdrawal of a physiological saline solution through the adapter when it is inserted into the opening from a bottle or vial, particularly for nasal irrigation, while minimizing the risk of solution contamination and facilitating nasal syringe filling for the user. Furthermore, the flip-top cap ensures a double seal on the bottle to prevent any unwanted leakage.
[0046] Furthermore, the device allows for the precise dispensing of ten milliliters of solution, without waste. This innovation eliminates the need to transfer the solution into a cup for dispensing, ensuring that the solution remains in the bottle throughout its use, thus preserving its sterility. And unlike traditional bottles without an adapter, where it is impossible to dispense the solution when the level is too low for the syringe to reach the bottom, the present invention allows the solution to be dispensed regardless of the bottle's capacity by inverting the bottle before dispensing.
[0047] The following advantageous technical characteristics should also be noted: - the adapter is designed so that it can be inserted optimally into a bottle but with a slight curvature of its outer face allowing optimal withdrawal of the solution while avoiding leaks; - it allows for extemporaneous sampling of the solution using a ten millilitre syringe and is equipped with a small valve allowing for double closure and enabling closure with one hand; - currently, no stopper or bottle allows for the direct withdrawal of a solution using a standard ten-milliliter syringe; - the proposed adapter is specifically designed with dimensions and shape adapted to facilitate the insertion of the syringe without any leakage of the solution to be drawn; - it also ensures easy closure during use and double closure (i.e. cap with a valve-forming head + second external cap of the bottle) during transport to prevent any leakage of the solution; - the physiological serum bottle equipped with an adapter according to the invention is the only one which allows the physiological serum solution to be taken directly from the bottle and guarantees the absence of contamination of the solution.
[0048] It is also worth recalling the technical advantages of the embodiments described above: - drawing the physiological saline solution directly from the bottle; - introduction of a syringe via the adapter without difficulty or leakage, allowing in particular the withdrawal of the solution with a standard ten millilitre syringe without leakage by guaranteeing the seal between the syringe and the bottle by the adapter; - no possibility of contact between the solution and the nasal tip of the syringe during sampling; - Double-valve closure to prevent the risk of solution leakage during use or transport, - reduction of solution waste: possibility of taking down to the last drop contained in the bottle.
[0049] Currently, there is no commercially available device that allows for the filling of a nasal syringe without transferring the solution to another container and without ensuring that the user cannot draw the solution with the syringe's nasal tip in direct contact with the nasal mucosa. Nasal hygiene is essential to prevent ENT (ear, nose, and throat) infections, and improper use can lead to user contamination. Therefore, a significant advantage of an adapter according to the invention is that this device forces the user to remove the nasal tip from the syringe, something very few users currently do. This ensures mandatory safety during the withdrawal process.
[0050] Potential industrial applications or fields of application of such an innovation are: the pharmaceutical and health sector, hygiene, the pharmaceutical industry, pharmaceutical wholesalers, pharmacy, etc.
[0051] It should also be noted that the invention is not limited to the embodiments described above. Indeed, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that various modifications can be made to the embodiments described above, in light of the instruction just disclosed to them. In the detailed presentation of the invention given above, the terms used should not be interpreted as limiting the invention to the embodiments set forth in this description, but should be interpreted to include all equivalents that a person skilled in the art can foresee by applying their general knowledge to the implementation of the instruction just disclosed to them.
