Description

Title of the invention: Electronic device comprising a rounded edge covered by a screen. Technical field

[0001] The present invention relates to a portable electronic device comprising a housing having a front wall, a rear wall, a rounded edge connecting the front wall and the rear wall, and a screen extending over the front wall and over the rounded edge, the screen comprising a termination extending over the rear wall. Background

[0002] A portable electronic device HW of the type mentioned above is described in international application WO 2024 / 056964. As shown in [Fig. 1] by a cross-sectional view, the housing of the HW device comprises a first longitudinal wall 10 having a rounded outer edge, a second longitudinal wall 12, a front wall 15 forming the front face of the device, a rear wall 16 forming the rear face of the device, and a cover 17. The HW device also comprises a screen 20 which extends over the front wall 15, over the rounded edge 11 and over the rear wall 16. The rear wall 16 has a portion 16a parallel to the front wall 15 and a portion 16b inclined towards the interior of the housing.

[0003] The HW device offers the ergonomic advantage of being able to display information both on its front face 15 and on the rounded edge 11. However, its industrial-scale implementation may present difficulties. Unlike some mobile phones that have a screen with a rounded edge at an angle of only a few degrees, the rounded edge 11 here has a 180° angle, which necessitates that the screen 20 have a termination that extends onto the rear face 16 of the housing in order to connect it to a printed circuit board (PCB), for example, by means of a CR connector. The portion 16b of the wall 16, inclined towards the inside of the housing, is designed to facilitate the penetration of the screen termination into the housing. However, the screen may occasionally detach from part 16b, or components of the screen may detach from each other in the area where the screen passes over part 16b. This increases the number of defective devices produced and therefore affects manufacturing yields. Furthermore, a void, or volume 200, extending between the rear face of the housing and part 16b, typically needs to be filled with adhesive. Air bubbles can become trapped in the adhesive, and these bubbles, expanding under the effect of heat, can damage the device, which also affects manufacturing yields.

[0004] It might therefore be desirable to improve the structure of such a portable electronic device and its manufacturing process, in order to reduce the risks of manufacturing defects and improve manufacturing yields. Summary

[0042] Figures 2 and 3 show the housing 5 of a portable electronic device HW 1 in which improvements according to this disclosure are implemented. Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view of the housing with a cover 17. Figure 3 is a top perspective view of the housing without the cover 17. The housing 5 comprises a first longitudinal wall 10 with a rounded outer edge 11, a second longitudinal wall 12, a first transverse side wall 13, a second transverse side wall 14, a front wall 15, and a rear wall 16. In the embodiment shown by way of non-limiting example, and as shown in Figure 2, the walls 10, 12 to 16 are machined from a solid piece of aluminum, giving the wall 10 a significant thickness. Thus, a portion 15-1 of the front wall 15 is formed by the front face of the wall 10, and the rear wall 16 is formed by the rear face of the wall 10.In other embodiments, part 15-1 of the front wall 15 and the rear wall 16 could be entirely separate.

[0043] The rear wall 16 covers only a portion of the rear face of the housing, which is closed by the cover 17. The wall 16 comprises, immediately after the rounded edge 11, a portion 16a parallel to the front wall 15 followed by a portion 16b inclined towards the interior of the housing, formed here by machining the thick wall 10. The interior of the housing 5 also includes a support surface 110, the function of which will be described later. The support surface 110 is, for example, formed by the top of an internal partition of the housing arranged midway between the side walls 13, 14 ([Fig. 3]).

[0044] Figure 4 is a cross-sectional view of a portable electronic device HW 1 constructed from the housing 5. Inside the housing, the device contains a battery (not shown) and a printed circuit board (PCB) supporting various electronic components. The device also includes a touchscreen 20 covered by a protective sheet 23, also called a "cover lens." The touchscreen 20 is constructed by superimposing a display 21 and a touch module 22.

[0045] The screen 20 extends over the front wall 15 and the rounded edge 11 and has, on the rear face of the housing, a termination comprising parts 20a, 20b, 20c. Part 20a extends over part 16a of the rear wall 16. Part 20b extends over part 16b, which is inclined towards the inside of the housing. Part 20c extends inside the housing and rests on the support surface 110. Beyond part 20c, the screen 20 is connected to ribbon cables whose ends are provided with connectors 215, 226 plugged into the printed circuit board (PCB).

[0046] The protective sheet 23 covers the screen on the front wall 15 and on the rounded edge 11 and itself has, on the rear face of the housing, an end section comprising parts 23a, 23b. Part 23a extends over part 20a of the screen. Part 23b overhangs part 20b of the screen but remains parallel to the front wall 15. In [Fig. 4], an empty volume 200 is thus visible extending between part 23b of the protective sheet and part 20b of the screen. In practice, such a volume 200 is not left empty and is filled with adhesive during the manufacture of the device.

[0047] According to one aspect of the present improvement, the HW 1 device comprises a generally longitudinal retaining bar 30, an embodiment of which is shown in [Fig. 5]. The retaining bar 30 comprises a proximal portion 31, a distal portion 32 having a flat upper face 322, and an intermediate portion 33 connecting the proximal portion 31 and the distal portion 32. The proximal portion 31 extends in a plane PI and the distal portion 32 extends in a plane P2, the planes PI and P2 being substantially offset by a height H12. The proximal portion 31 has two mounting tabs 34, 35 provided with mounting holes for attachment to the housing 5 by means of screws 50, 51.

[0048] With reference to [Fig. 3], the housing 5 has a shoulder 130 formed in the wall 13 to receive the mounting tab 34, and a shoulder 140 formed in the wall 14 to receive the mounting tab 35 (since shoulder 140 is hidden by the wall 14 in [Fig. 3], reference may be made to Figures 14 and 15 described later). Each shoulder 130, 140 has a tapped hole 131, 141 for attaching the corresponding tab 34, 35 by means of the screw 50, 51. Returning to [Fig. 5], the mounting tabs 34, 35 extend here in a mounting plane PO corresponding to that of the shoulders 140, 141, which is substantially below the plane PL

[0049] Figure 4 shows the retaining bar 30 fixed in the housing. The part 20c of the screen is sandwiched between the support surface 110 and the proximal part 31 of The retaining bar 30. The distal part 32 of the retaining bar 30 extends into the volume 200 and its distal edge rests against part 20b of the screen, which is thus pressed against part 16b of the rear wall of the housing. Furthermore, part 23b of the protective sheet 23 rests against the upper face 322 of the distal part 32 of the retaining bar.

[0050] Figure 6 shows a variant 30' of the support bar, and Figure 7 is a cross-sectional view thereof. Like the support bar 30, the support bar 30' comprises a proximal portion 31', a distal portion 32' having a flat upper face 322', and an intermediate portion 33' connecting the proximal portion 31' and the distal portion 32'. Two fixing tabs 34', 35' with fixing holes are also provided at the two ends of the proximal portion 31'. The distal portion 32' of the support bar 30' differs from that of the support bar 30 in that it has a beveled rear face 320 that tends to meet the flat upper face 322', giving the distal portion 32 a tapered shape and a substantially pointed end.

[0051] Figure 8 is a partial cross-sectional view of the HW 1 device equipped with the retaining bar 30'. Figure 9 is an enlarged view of Figure 8 in the portion of the HW 1 device receiving the retaining bar 30'. The distal portion 32' of the retaining bar 30', due to its tapered shape, occupies most of the volume 200 extending between portion 20b of the screen and portion 23b of the protective sheet. The remaining volume not occupied by the distal portion 32' of part 32 is filled with adhesive, but this residual volume is very small, so that the risk of encapsulation of air bubbles detrimental to the manufacturing yield of the device is itself considerably reduced, even negligible or zero. Such air bubbles, expanding under the effect of an increase in temperature, can indeed detach the protective sheet 23 from the touch module 22 and this detachment can increase over time.

[0052] The lower face 320 of the distal part 32 of the support bar optionally has a recess 325 (see also [Fig. 7]) reducing its contact area with the part 20b of the screen, so as not to exert excessive stress on it. This recess 325 creates an additional residual volume, but one which is itself sufficiently small so as not to be conducive to the encapsulation of air bubbles.

[0053] Figures 10A and 10B show a preferred embodiment of the retaining bar 30'. The retaining bar 30' is pre-stressed after manufacture and, when not screwed onto the housing, has a concave curvature with a low point located midway between its ends. Thus, when the bar 30' is screwed onto the housing, the low point of its proximal portion 31' is the first point to come into contact with the support surface 110, and the low point of its distal portion 32' is the first point to come into contact with part 20b of the screen. As it is screwed onto the housing, the bar 30' straightens and gradually becomes rectilinear again. This concave shape ensures that the distal part 32' of the bar 30' rests against part 20b of the screen across its entire width.

[0054] The depth p of the concavity is for example of the order of 0.25 to 0.8 mm for a length L of the support bar 30' of the order of 83 mm, i.e. a corresponding concavity of the order of 0.3% to 0.9% and more generally between 0.25% and 1% for an aluminium support bar, or any other range of values depending on the material used.

[0055] In an exemplary and non-limiting embodiment, the support bar 30, 30' has the following characteristics:

[0056] - a length L of 83 mm,

[0057] - a width 1 ([Fig.1OA]) of 6.25 mm,

[0058] - a thickness of its distal part 32' of the order of 0.1 mm,

[0059] - a thickness of its proximal part 31' of the order of 0.5 mm,

[0060] - a functional height H12 (figures 5 and 7, distance between planes PI and P2) of the order of 0.65 mm.

[0061] - a total height HT (figures 5 and 7) of the order of 1.85 mm.

[0062] In one embodiment, the support bar 30 is made from a sheet bent steel at the end of its distal part 32 ([Fig.5]) to obtain a soft contact edge 32c with the part 20b of the screen.

[0063] In another embodiment, the support bar 30' is made of machined aluminum. The beveled face 320 of its distal part 32 comes into contact with the part 20b of the screen along a transverse contact line seen in cross-section in [Fig. 9] and represented by a point CL. This contact line forms the tangent between the plane of the rear face 320 of the distal part and a hypothetical cylinder in which the part 16b of the rear wall 16 would be inscribed.

[0064] In an exemplary and non-limiting embodiment, the display 21 has a thickness of approximately 0.16 mm and the touch module 22 has a thickness of approximately 0.15 mm. A layer of adhesive between these two elements has a thickness of approximately 0.025 mm. The protective sheet 23 has a thickness of approximately 0.07 to 0.08 mm, and a layer of adhesive between the touch module 22 and the protective sheet 23 has a thickness of approximately 0.05 mm. In one embodiment, the protective sheet 23 is made of PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate), a transparent thermoplastic polymer with excellent optical properties. The adhesive used to assemble these elements and fill the volume 200 is, for example, a cyanoacrylate adhesive such as 2-methyl cyanoacrylate or 2-octyl cyanoacrylate.

[0065] In an embodiment shown in [Fig. 11], the display 21 comprises an active area 211 (display area) and a frame 212, and is made on a flexible substrate 213. The flexible substrate 213 extends beyond the active area 211 and receives a row and column multiplexer 214, as well as the aforementioned connector 215, allowing it to be connected to the printed circuit board.

[0066] In an embodiment shown in [Fig. 12], the touch module 22 comprises a cover surface 220 and a frame 221, the assembly being mounted on a flexible support 222. The cover surface 220 includes a touch area 220a and a non-touch area 220b. The non-touch area covers the rounded edge 11 of the housing, where information is to be displayed but without a touch effect. The flexible support 222 also includes an extension 224 receiving a control chip 225 and the aforementioned connector 226 for connecting the touch module 22 to the printed circuit board.

[0067] In an embodiment shown in [Fig. 13], the protective lens 23 comprises a transparent area 230 and a painted frame 231. It includes a moisture protection layer, a hard anti-reflective layer and an optically clear adhesive on its rear face for assembly onto the touch module 22.

[0068] Figures 14 to 17 illustrate steps in a manufacturing process for the portable electronic device HW 1 involving the retaining bar 30'. In one step illustrated in [Fig. 14], the screen 20 was glued to the front wall 15 and the rounded edge 11 of the housing. In another step illustrated in [Fig. 15], the screen 20 was glued to parts 16a, 16b of the rear wall 16. The retaining bar 30' is positioned above the housing 5 so that its mounting tabs 34', 35' fit into the shoulders 130, 140 of the housing. The retaining bar 30' is then fixed by inserting the screws 50, 51 into the tapped holes 131, 141. At a step illustrated on [Fig.16] by a cross-sectional view, the retaining bar 30' was fixed to the housing. Its distal part 32' presses part 20b of the screen 20 against part 16b of the rear wall of the housing and its proximal part 31' extends above part 20c of the screen, which rests on the support surface 110 (not visible in [Fig.16], see [Fig.15]). In a step illustrated in [Fig. 17], the protective sheet 23 was glued onto the screen, starting from the front face of the housing, then onto the rounded edge 11, and then onto the distal part 32' of the retaining bar 30', which is therefore covered by part 23b of the protective sheet 23 (see also [Fig.9]).

[0069] The manufacturing method of an electronic device which has just been described, involving the retaining bar 30 or 30', makes it possible to prevent the part 20b of the screen 20 from detaching from the inclined part 16b of the rear wall 16 or to prevent the touch module 22 from detaching from the display 21 in this same region, which can occur when the touch module is more rigid than the display.

[0070] This process also avoids the formation of air bubbles in the glue by occupying the volume 200 (figures 4, 8, 9) with the distal part 32, 32' of the retaining bar 30, 30', in particular if the embodiment 30' of the retaining bar is retained.

[0071] Moreover, incidentally but advantageously, the flat upper face 322 or 322' of the distal part 32 or 32' of the retaining bar also serves as a support for the part 23b of the protective sheet 23, as seen above ([Fig.8] or 9).

[0072] Also incidentally but advantageously, the upper face of the proximal part 31 or 31' of the retaining bar 30 or 30' can serve as a support for an edge of the hood 17. In this case, a wall 330, 330' of the intermediate part 33, 33' of the retaining bar 30, 30' can also serve as a lateral stop for the hood 17, as seen in figures 4 and 8.

[0073] It will be clear to those skilled in the art that the retaining bar 30, 30' and the housing which receives it are susceptible to various other variants and embodiments, particularly with regard to the shape of the retaining bar, its means of attachment to the housing, as well as the profile of the rear face of the housing on which its distal part 32, 32' rests to keep the screen pressed against the housing.

[0074] Although the embodiments described above relate to a touchscreen comprising a display and a touch module, the manufacturing process just described also applies to the embodiment of a device comprising only a display without a touch module. In one embodiment, the portable electronic device HW 1 produced according to this process is a hardware crypto-asset wallet as described in international application WO 2024 / 056964, the main processor of which is a secure element configured to perform cryptographic calculations and, in particular, to sign transactions intended to be recorded on a blockchain.
