[0187] The MELUSINE study demonstrates that the use of mebeverine significantly reduces the risk of organ damage or flares or exacerbations in patients with SLE, which can represent signs of disease progression. The benefits of mebeverine were observed in the context of widespread use of standard, effective SLE treatments, such as hydroxychloroquine (HCQ), corticosteroids (CS), or immunosuppressants (IS). It is noteworthy that mebeverine had the same effect whether or not patients were using these medications; therefore, mebeverine has a beneficial effect on SLE outcomes independently of the effect of all known SLE treatments. These surprising results have never been described in the prior art.
