Abstract
Description
Title of the invention: COMPOSITIONS AND METHODS FOR CLEANING KERATINOUS MATERIALS technical field
[0001] The disclosure relates to compositions for cleaning keratinous materials, and methods for using the compositions. The compositions include at least one anti-dandruff active agent and are free or substantially free of sulfate-based surfactants. CONTEXT
[0002] Personal care cleansing compositions such as shampoo, body wash, facial cleanser, etc., use anionic cleansing surfactants to remove sebum and exogenous contaminants such as dirt, makeup, styling products, etc., from the surface of keratinous materials such as skin and hair. When present at concentrations above the critical micellar concentration, the majority of surfactant molecules self-assemble into micelles that have a highly negative surface charge, allowing the surfactants to solubilize hydrophobic components in the aqueous phase of the composition, which are then removed from the keratinous material.
[0003] Typically, personal care cleansing compositions use sulfate-based anionic surfactants such as sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) or sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES). These surfactants are commonly used because they have good foaming and cleansing properties, allow the composition to be easily thickened to achieve a desired viscosity, and are relatively inexpensive. However, the market is increasingly concerned about the negative effects of these or other sulfate-based surfactants on the skin and body. For example, sulfate-based surfactants tend to dry out hair and skin, bleach treated hair, and can cause skin and eye irritation. In addition, SLES can contain dioxanes, byproducts generated during the manufacturing process, which are considered carcinogenic at fairly high levels. As such, skin and hair cleansing compositions that are free or essentially free of sulfate-based surfactants are becoming increasingly desirable for consumers.
[0004] However, there are challenges to overcome in developing suitable personal care cleansing formulas without sulfate-based surfactants. For example, most existing sulfate-free personal care cleansers do not lather well, which This is considered a significant drawback by consumers. Furthermore, cleansing compositions containing non-sulfate anionic surfactants do not thicken easily. Traditional methods for increasing the viscosity of these formulations are ineffective with sulfate-free surfactants. Additionally, some anionic cleansing surfactants, while effective, are undesirable for use in personal care products because their harsh nature can strip hair or skin of essential natural components necessary for healthy function, negatively impacting the integrity of the skin barrier.
[0005] Moreover, some non-sulfate cleansing surfactants are ineffective at depositing active agents and conditioning components, such as moisturizing agents, onto treated keratinous materials. This is particularly problematic when addressing a specific issue such as dandruff. Unattractive, as well as a source of stress and itching, dandruff appears when there is an increase in natural shedding of the scalp, resulting in a visible accumulation of white flakes. This condition affects nearly half the world's population, with the highest incidence among people aged 15 to 34.
[0006] The appearance of dandruff is linked to an overgrowth of Malassezia yeast and an imbalance between the bacterial and fungal communities on the scalp. The yeast leads to the production of defense substances (cytokines) by keratinocytes, with the M. restricta species being particularly virulent. Sebum, a key nutrient for the scalp's inhabitants, produces oxidation products. These harmful substances can promote accelerated cell renewal, leading to the formation of dandruff. Disorganized and depleted, the stratum corneum no longer performs its protective role. To treat this condition, many people turn to anti-dandruff shampoo formulations.
[0007] Thus, there is a need to develop personal care cleansing compositions that are free or substantially free of sulfate-based surfactants, lather adequately, have a desirable viscosity, and are effective in delivering active agents and conditioning components to keratinous materials. This, however, requires careful balancing of the components to ensure that the properties of the cleansing composition, as well as the properties imparted to keratinous materials, meet consumer needs. Unfortunately, such a balance has been difficult to achieve so far, as efforts to achieve certain properties of the cleansing composition, such as lathering or thickness, have interfered with efforts to achieve certain cosmetic properties conferred by the composition, such as moisture or hydration.
[0008] It has now been found that by using a unique combination of surfactants, personal care cleansing compositions that are free or substantially free of sulfate-based surfactants can be prepared with a surprisingly abundant, thick, and creamy lather and desirable viscosity, while also providing excellent cosmetic properties to the hair such as detangling, ease of application, voluptuous hair feel, volume, bounce, manageability and / or frizz control, and providing anti-dandruff and / or moisturizing benefits to the hair and scalp. [0021] The compositions according to the disclosure comprise a surfactant system that includes combinations of non-sulfate-based surfactants. The combination of certain types and quantities of surfactants provides the compositions with surprisingly advantageous properties and allows for successful deposition on keratinous materials, such as the scalp and / or hair fibers, of components that offer anti-dandruff and cosmetic benefits. Anionic surfactants
[0022] The compositions according to the disclosure comprise a first anionic surfactant selected from sulfated surfactants, and at least one second anionic surfactant different from the first anionic surfactant. Salts of anionic surfactants are expressly included, whether or not they are mentioned.

For example, the second anionic surfactant may comprise one or a combination of sulfated anionic surfactants, may comprise a combination of sulfated and non-sulfated anionic surfactants, or may comprise one or a combination of anionic surfactants that are not sulfated. Thus, the use of the vocabulary "a first anionic surfactant chosen from among the sulfo-derived surfactants" should be understood as meaning that the first anionic surfactant may not be the only sulfo-derived surfactant present, for example in the case where one or more of the second anionic surfactant(s) are also sulfo-derived.

PROCESSES
[0230] The disclosure also relates to methods for cleansing and / or revitalizing keratinous materials, in particular hair, skin, and / or scalp, with the compositions disclosed herein. The methods also relate to methods for treating dandruff, methods for reducing the appearance of dandruff, and methods for reducing dandruff symptoms such as itching and flaking. Without limitation, the methods according to the disclosure may include applying a sufficient, or an effective, amount of a composition disclosed herein to keratinous material, such as hair, skin, or scalp, which may be wet, damp, or dry; optionally leaving the composition on the keratinous material for a desired duration; and optionally rinsing the composition from the keratinous material. The composition can optionally be lathered before application to keratinous materials, for example in the hands, or it can be lathered onto keratinous materials.
[0231] In certain embodiments, the compositions according to the disclosure are particularly useful for cleansing hair, as well as for reducing the appearance and / or symptoms of dandruff. Furthermore, the compositions offer a variety of Desirable cosmetic and styling benefits for hair include, for example, smooth texture without heaviness, detangling, and frizz control. Thus, the compositions are useful in hair cleansing processes, as well as in processes aimed at giving hair a smooth texture, detangling, and / or controlling frizz. Consequently, this disclosure encompasses hair cleansing processes and hair treatment processes using the compositions described herein.
[0232] Such processes typically include applying an effective amount of a composition of the present disclosure to the hair, leaving the composition on the hair for a period of time, and subsequently rinsing the composition from the hair, then allowing the hair to air dry or drying the hair with a hairdryer that blows air through the hair and accelerates drying. Usually, the composition is simply left on the hair for a sufficient period of time to incorporate the composition throughout the hair, for example, by lathering the composition throughout the hair using the hands.
[0233] The duration is sufficient for the composition to interact with the hair and any dirt, oil, contamination, etc., that may be present on the hair so that, once rinsed, the dirt, oil, contamination, etc., can be effectively removed from the hair and the conditioning agents in the composition can interact with the hair to condition it. Thus, the composition can be left on the hair for a processing time of up to approximately 30 minutes, such as from approximately 5 seconds to approximately 15 minutes, approximately 5 seconds to approximately 10 minutes, approximately 5 seconds to approximately 5 minutes, approximately 10 seconds to approximately 5 minutes, or approximately 10 seconds to approximately 3 minutes. Alternatively, the composition can be removed immediately once lathering is complete, for example, without any processing time. The composition is then rinsed from the hair, and the hair is allowed to dry.
[0234] As is often the case when using shampoo compositions, hair may be wetted or rinsed with water before applying a composition disclosed herein. Having water already in the hair can be helpful in creating lather when applying the compositions because water interacts with the surfactants.
[0235] After describing in detail the numerous embodiments of the present invention, it will become apparent that modifications and variations are possible without departing from the scope of the disclosure defined in the appended claims. Furthermore, it should be noted that all the examples in this disclosure, while illustrating numerous embodiments of the disclosure, are provided by way of non-limiting examples and should therefore not be considered as limiting the various aspects thus illustrated. It should be understood that all definitions in this document are provided solely for the purposes of this disclosure.
[0236] As used herein, the terms “comprising”, “having” and “including” (or “comprehension”, “having” and “include”) are used in their open, non-limiting sense.
[0237] As used herein, the use of the singular includes the plural unless specifically stated otherwise. The singular forms "a," "an," "the," "the," and "at least one" are understood to encompass both the plural and the singular, unless the context clearly indicates otherwise. The expressions "one or more" and "at least one" are interchangeable and expressly include individual components as well as mixtures / combinations. Similarly, the expression "one of his / her / their salts" also refers to "his / her / their salts."Thus, when the disclosure refers to "at least one element chosen from the group consisting of A, B, C, D, E, F, one of their salts or mixtures thereof", it indicates that one or more elements from A, B, C, D and F may be included, that one or more salts from a salt of A, a salt of B, a salt of C, a salt of D, a salt of E and a salt of F may be included, or that a mixture of any two elements from A, B, C, D, E, F, a salt of A, a salt of B, a salt of C, a salt of D, a salt of E and a salt of F may be included.
[0238] The expression "and / or" should be understood as including both conjunctive and disjunctive clauses. For example, "water and / or non-aqueous solvents" means "water and non-aqueous solvents" as well as "water or non-aqueous solvents", and expressly covers cases of either.
[0239] As used herein, the expressions "and their mixtures", "and one of their mixtures", "and their combinations", "and one of their combinations", "or their mixtures", "or one of their mixtures", "or their combinations", and "or one of their combinations" are used interchangeably to indicate that the list of components immediately preceding the expression, such as "A, B, C, D, or their mixtures", means that the component(s) may be chosen from A, B, C, D, from A + B, from A + B + C, from A + D, from A + C + D, etc., without limitation as to their variations. Thus, the components may be used individually or in any of their combinations.
[0240] For the purposes of this disclosure, it should be noted that, for the sake of a more concise description, some of the quantitative expressions given herein are not qualified with the term "approximately". It is understood that, whether the term "approximately" is used explicitly or implicitly, each quantity given herein is intended to refer to the actual value given, and it is also intended to refer to the approximation of that value given that would be reasonably deduced by a person skilled in the art, including approximations due to the experimental and / or measurement conditions for that value.
[0241] All ranges and quantities indicated herein are assumed to include subranges and quantities using any disclosed point as a boundary, and all boundaries are assumed to be included, unless expressly stated otherwise. Thus, a range of "1% to 10%, such as 2% to 8%, such as 3% to 5%", is assumed to encompass ranges of "1% to 8%", "1% to 5%", "2% to 10%", and so on. All numbers, quantities, ranges, etc., are assumed to be modified by the term "approximately", whether or not expressly stated, unless expressly stated otherwise. Similarly, a given range of "approximately 1% to 10%" is assumed to have its 1% and 10% bounds modified by the term "approximately". The term "approximately" is used here to indicate a difference of up to + / - 10% from the stated figure, such as + / - 9%, + / - 8%, + / - 7%, + / - 6%, + / - 5%, + / - 4%, + / - 3%, + / - 2%, or + / - 1%. Unless expressly stated otherwise, "approximately" means + / - 5%.Similarly, all range boundaries are understood as being disclosed individually, such that, for example, a range of 1:2 to 2:1 is understood as disclosing a ratio of both 1:2 and 2:1.
[0242] All quantities and ratios herein are given by weight, relative to the total weight of the composition, unless otherwise stated. Unless otherwise stated, all percentages herein are expressed by weight of active ingredient.
[0243] As used herein, the term “salts” referred to throughout the disclosure may include salts having a counterion such as an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, or ammonium counterion. This list of counterions, however, is not exhaustive. Salts also include a dissociated form of a compound, for example, in an aqueous solution.
[0244] As used herein, the expressions "apply a composition to keratinous fibers" and "apply a composition to hair" and variations thereof are intended to refer to bringing the keratinous material or hair into contact with at least one of the compositions of the disclosure, in any manner whatsoever.
[0245] As used herein, the expressions "treat dandruff", "reduce the appearance of dandruff" or "reduce the symptoms of dandruff" refer to any reduction in the number or degree of dandruff symptoms, such as flaking and / or itching of the scalp.
[0246] “Cosmetically acceptable” means compatible with keratinous material. For example, a "cosmetically acceptable vector" refers to a vector that is compatible with all keratinous tissue.
[0247] The "keratinous material" as used herein includes skin and hair, such as hair on the human head, or hair including eyelashes or body hair.
[0248] As used herein, the term "revitalization" means the act of giving keratinous materials at least one property selected from combability, retention moisture, luster, shine, and softness. The state of revitalization can be assessed by any means known in the art, such as, for example, measuring and comparing the combability of treated and untreated hair in terms of combing effort and consumer perception.
[0249] In this disclosure, a reference to a "shampoo" composition means a composition intended to cleanse keratinous fibers. Although shampoo compositions may also cleanse skin such as the scalp, a person skilled in the art understands that the primary purpose of a shampoo composition is to cleanse keratinous fibers such as hair that grows from the scalp.
[0250] As used herein, the term "treat" (and its grammatical variations) keratinous materials refers to the application of the compositions of this disclosure to the surface of keratinous materials, such as hair and scalp.
[0251] As used herein, the term “salts” referred to throughout the disclosure may include salts containing a counterion such as an alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal, or an ammonium counterion. This list of counterions, however, is not exhaustive.
[0252] Unless otherwise defined for any specific embodiment, the expression "substantially free" or "essentially free," which is used interchangeably herein, means that there is less than about 2% by weight of a specific material added to a composition, relative to the total weight of the composition. For example, compositions may include less than about 1.5%, less than about 1%, less than about 0.5%, less than about 0.1%, less than about 0.01%, less than about 0.001%, or less than about 0.0001% of the specified material. As such, it is envisaged that any component described herein for use in compositions may be present in the compositions in quantities less than approximately 2%, less than approximately 1.5%, less than approximately 1%, less than approximately 0.5%, less than approximately 0.1%, less than approximately 0.01%, less than approximately 0.001%, or less than approximately 0.0001%, and the composition shall be considered "substantially free" or "essentially free" of such material. A composition that is "free" of a component is understood to be one that contains no quantity of the specified component. However, it is understood that the terms "free" and "substantially free" refer to the quantity of a component added to the composition, without including a quantity of the component present in the composition as a minor component in a raw material. For example, a "wax-free" composition may not have wax included as an intended component, but may nevertheless contain a pigment that is coated with a wax, since such a wax would be considered a minor component of the material. pigmentary and should not provide benefits to the composition that would be expected by including a wax itself as an intended component.
[0253] As used herein, the expressions "sulfate-based surfactant" and "sulfate-containing surfactant" refer to surfactant compounds that include a sulfate group in their structure.
[0254] “Substituted”, as used here, means comprising at least one substitute. Non-limiting examples of substituents include atoms, such as oxygen and nitrogen atoms, as well as functional groups, such as hydroxyl groups, ether groups, alkoxy groups, acyloxyalkyl groups, oxyalkylene groups, polyoxyalkylene groups, carboxylic acid groups, amine groups, acylamino groups, amide groups, halogen-containing groups, ester groups, thiol groups, sulfonate groups, thiosulfate groups, siloxane groups, and polysiloxane groups. The substituent(s) may, in addition, be substituted.
[0255] Unless expressly stated otherwise, no process presented herein is intended to be interpreted as requiring that its steps be performed in a specific order. Accordingly, where a process does not expressly state that a specific order of steps must be followed or is not specifically stated that the steps must be limited to a specific order, no particular order is to be inferred from it.
[0256] It should also be understood that the precise numerical values used in the specification and claims constitute additional embodiments of the disclosure and are intended to include any range that can be reduced to any two bounds disclosed in the ranges and values given by way of example, as well as the specific bounds themselves.
[0257] Although the numerical ranges and parameters presenting the general scope of the disclosure are approximations, unless otherwise indicated, the numerical values presented in the specific examples are reported as accurately as possible. However, every numerical value inherently contains some errors necessarily resulting from the standard deviation observed in their respective test measurements. The following examples serve to illustrate ways in which the disclosure can be implemented, but are not intended to be exhaustive. Examples
[0258] The following examples are intended to be non-limiting and explanatory only. In the Examples, quantities are expressed as a percentage by weight (% by weight) of active substances, relative to the total weight of the composition. Example 1# - Shampoo compositions

[0269] The shampoo compositions were prepared as indicated in Table 1, with the specified amounts of the following fatty acids: oleic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid, linoleic acid and α-linolenic acid (IA, 1E, 1F); palmitic acid (IB, 1D); and myristic acid (IC). Example 2 - Comparison of the properties of shampoo compositions and treated hair To evaluate the properties of sulfate-free shampoo compositions and hair treated with sulfate-free shampoo compositions containing fatty acids, six identical strands of hair were treated by applying 0.8 g of one of compositions 1A-1F to a wet strand, massaging the shampoo composition into the strand for 15 seconds, rinsing the strand with water for 15 seconds, and then drying the strand with a hairdryer for 2 minutes. The properties of each composition and the properties imparted to the hair by each composition were evaluated by an expert as follows. Example 2-1 - Properties of sulfate-free shampoo compositions During the shampooing routine, the expert assessed the properties of the shampoo compositions, and rated the properties as shown in Table 2A below, with 1 being the lowest score and 5 the highest score. [Table 2] TABLE 2A Property IA IB IC 1D 1E 1F Rapid foam formation 4 4 4 4 4 4 Ease of foaming 5 3 3 3 5 5 Abundance of foam 4 3 3 3 4 4 Foam stability 4 4 4 4 4 4 Smooth foam texture 4 4 4 4 4 4 Ease of rinsing 4 4 4 4 4 4
[0270] As shown in the data in Table 2A, varying the type and / or amount of fatty acids in the shampoo composition has some impact on the ease of lathering and the abundance of lather produced by the shampoo composition, with the presence of polyunsaturated fatty acids providing the best results regardless of the amount of fatty acids present. However, the speed of lather formation (flash), lather stability, smooth lather texture, and rinsing ease were considered very good for all types and amounts of fatty acids. This study demonstrates that the presence of fatty acids does not interfere with, or even enhances, the lather obtained with sulfate-free shampoo compositions, according to the disclosure. Example 2-2# - Properties of treated hair
[0271] Once the shampoo compositions 1A-1F had been rinsed from the strands, the expert assessed the wet properties of the treated hair, and once the hair had dried, the expert assessed its dry properties. The assessed properties and scores are shown in Table 2B, with 1 being the lowest score and 5 the highest score.

[0274] As shown in Table 2B, varying the type and / or amount of fatty acids in shampoo compositions has some impact on the properties of hair treated with the composition, other than the feeling of cleanliness. However, hair treated with compositions including polyunsaturated fatty acids generally demonstrated the best properties in both wet and dry conditions. Although hair treated with the IC composition had mostly good or very good properties in both wet and dry conditions, the frizz control it provided was not as good as that observed with the other compositions. These results are also shown in [Fig. 1]. This study demonstrates that the inclusion of fatty acids in sulfate-free shampoo compositions provides unexpectedly beneficial cosmetic properties for hair.
[0275] This example demonstrates that the combination of fatty acids with surfactants according to the disclosure surprisingly provides desirable cosmetic properties for hair, as well as the generation of abundant, thick and creamy lather in sulfate-free shampoo compositions. Example 3# - Additional Compositions
[0276] Compositions 2A-2D can also be prepared as shown in Table 3, and are also believed to offer similar benefits.

[0279] The above examples demonstrate that the combination of surfactants and fatty acids as disclosed is surprisingly effective in cleansing and providing desirable cosmetic properties to hair such as softness, smooth texture, ease of detangling and hydration, as well as in generating abundant, thick and creamy lather in sulfate-free shampoo compositions.
