Skiving for manufacture of components

Abstract

A method of skiving comprises using one or more cutters 14a-b to make a plurality of cuts in a billet of material 20, wherein each cut forms a sliver 23, 33, 43 of material which remains attached to at least one of the billet or an immediately preceding sliver of material. A first plurality of cuts are made from a first orientation with respect to the billet 20, and a second plurality of cuts are made from a second orientation with respect to the billet 20, wherein the first plurality of cuts are interspersed with the second plurality of cuts. This provides an advantageous method of making a concertina 50 of material, for example. A ring-shaped item may be produced by forming the skived component into a ring-shaped heat exchange element. Further provided is a skiving machine comprising a fixture 12, first and second cutters 14a-b, an actuator that moves the billet relative to the cutters or the cutters relative to the billet, wherein both cutters are located at opposite sides of the billet in use.
