Abstract

Method of estimating spatial distribution of bamboo under forest cover for giant pandas, comprising: obtaining GF-1 satellite panchromatic and multispectral (PMS) images; obtaining digital elevation model (DEM); obtaining field survey data (Fig. 2) that samples the presence and absence of bamboo; obtaining a forest map of a giant panda reserve; segmenting the PMS images and the DEM data and extracting feature data including spectral features, texture features, vegetation indexes, and terrain features; superimposing the field survey data, forest map and segments to determine a label for the segment of bamboo present, bamboo absent, and no sample; building a bamboo distribution estimation model using training data, the training data comprising the extracted feature data corresponding to segments whose label data is bamboo present or bamboo absent; and inputting segments with no samples into the trained bamboo spatial distribution estimation model for labelling as bamboo present or bamboo absent. A spatial distribution map (Fig. 6) of bamboo may be drawn from the output of the bamboo spatial distribution estimation model.
