Abstract

This invention relates to the composition of a Ru-Sn / ZrO2 catalyst in solid form within a certain range. The amount of ruthenium (Ru) metal is 0-5% w / w to the weight of the ZrO2 carrier, while the amount of tin (Sn) metal is 0.17% w / w; 0.32% w / w; 0.73% w / w; and 1.30% w / w to the weight of the ZrO2 carrier. The Ru-Sn / ZrO2 catalyst is synthesized by combining ruthenium (III) chloride hydrate (RuCl3·xH2O) and tin(II) chloride dihydrate (SnCl2·2H2O) precursors with the ZrO2 carrier in 2-methoxy ethanol solvent, then followed by hydrothermal and activation processes to obtain the Ru-Sn / ZrO2 catalyst. The Ru-Sn / ZrO2 catalyst was applied in the synthesis of 1,5-pentanediol from furfuryl alcohol with the highest yield of 81% 1,5-PeD for the Ru-(0.17)Sn / ZrO2 catalyst.
