AI Technical Summary
Aerosol generation systems face challenges in effectively cleaning heater components due to residue accumulation, particularly on heating blades, which can lead to degraded performance, and conventional glass compositions require high firing temperatures that damage sensitive heater components.
A glass composition comprising specific oxides is used to form a smooth coating on heater components, allowing for low-temperature firing and easy cleaning, while maintaining compatibility with ceramic substrates.
The low-temperature glass composition provides a smooth, defect-free surface that facilitates easy cleaning of heater components, reducing residue accumulation and improving device performance without damaging sensitive electrical tracks.

[0014] The term "aerosol-generating article" as used herein refers to an article for generating an aerosol. An aerosol-generating article typically comprises an aerosol-forming substrate that is suitable and intended to be heated or burned to release volatile compounds capable of forming an aerosol. A conventional cigarette is lit when a user applies a flame to one end of the cigarette and draws air through the other end. The localized heat provided by the flame and the oxygen in the air drawn through the cigarette ignites the end of the cigarette, and the resulting combustion produces inhalable smoke. In contrast, in a "heated aerosol-generating article", the aerosol is generated by heating the aerosol-forming substrate, rather than by burning the aerosol-forming substrate. Known heated aerosol-generating articles include, for example, electrically heated aerosol-generating articles.
[0015] The term "aerosol-forming substrate" as used herein refers to a substrate that can generate, upon heating, a volatile compound capable of forming an aerosol. The aerosol generated from the aerosol-forming substrate may or may not be visible to the human eye and may include vapor (e.g., gaseous particles of a substance that is normally a liquid or solid at room temperature), as well as gas and liquid droplets of condensed vapor.
[0016] As used herein, the term "aerosol-generating device" refers to a device that includes a heater or heating element that interacts with an aerosol-forming substrate of an aerosol-generating article to generate an aerosol.

[0088] [Figure 1] FIG. 1 illustrates generally one example of an aerosol generating device that includes a heater, the heater component having a coating formed from a glass composition described herein. [Diagram 2] FIG. 2 illustrates a cross-sectional view of components of the heater shown in FIG. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
[0089] An aerosol generating system for delivering an aerosol to a user typically comprises an aerosol generating device and an aerosol generating article. The aerosol generating device may include an atomizer configured to generate an inhalable aerosol from an aerosol-forming substrate provided in the aerosol generating article. Some known aerosol generating devices include a heater, such as an electric heater or an induction heating device. The heater is configured to heat and vaporize the aerosol-forming substrate to generate an aerosol. A typical aerosol-forming substrate for use in an aerosol generating system is a nicotine formulation, which may be a liquid nicotine formulation including an aerosol former such as glycerin and / or propylene glycol.
[0090] During the use of the aerosol generating device, waste residues may accumulate on the surface of the atomizer. Therefore, the atomizer, especially the heater, should be cleaned regularly to keep it in good working order. However, if the atomizer components have rough surfaces, the surfaces of the components may be difficult to clean effectively, and waste residues may remain after the components are cleaned. Over time, this waste residue accumulates on the atomizer surfaces, which leads to the performance of the atomizer deteriorating.
[0091] Aerosol generating devices having heaters may be particularly susceptible to the problem of waste residue accumulating on the heater surfaces: aerosol generating devices having heated blade type heaters are more likely to have waste residue accumulating on their surfaces compared to other types of heaters.
[0092] It is desirable to provide an aerosol generating system in which the heater components or parts are easy to clean.
[0093] The inventors have realized that the outer surface of one or more components of the heater can be coated with a glass composition to provide a smoother surface. For example, glass compositions are used for similar reasons in dental applications. However, such glass compositions need to be fired at temperatures above 900°C. Firing the heater components at such high temperatures can cause partial melting of parts of the heater, such as the heating tracks that contain gold and silver. This partial melting can cause defects, such as small bubbles, on the surface of the glass coating, which can affect the smoothness of the coating and therefore make cleaning the heater more difficult.
[0094] It would therefore be desirable to provide a glass composition that can be used to provide a smooth outer coating and that can be fired at relatively low temperatures compared to conventional glass compositions.
[0095] The embodiment of FIG. 1 shows a portion of an aerosol generating device 1000 .
[0096] The aerosol-generating device 1000 includes a heater 1010. The heater 1010 is for heating an aerosol-generating substrate contained within an aerosol-generating article. In the embodiment of Figure 1, the heater 1010 includes a heating blade 1020. In other embodiments, the heater 1010 may include alternative heater configurations.
[0097] In the embodiment of FIG. 1, a heater 1010 is mounted within the receiving chamber.
[0098] The aerosol generating device 1000 defines a number of air holes 1030 for engaging the aerosol generating device 1000 and allowing air to flow to an aerosol-generating article received within the receiving chamber.
[0099] The aerosol generating device 1000 has a power source. In the embodiment of FIG.
[0100] The aerosol generating device 1000 includes control electronics 1050 for controlling the operation of the aerosol generating device 1000. The control electronics 1050 may include a processor or the like.
[0101] The example aerosol generating device 1000 illustrated in FIG. 1 is designed to be engaged by an aerosol-generating article to consume an aerosol-forming substrate contained within the article.
[0102] In use, once the aerosol-generating article is engaged with the aerosol-generating device 1000, the user activates the heater 1010. The heater 1010 heats the aerosol-forming substrate to a temperature of approximately 375 degrees Celsius. At this temperature, volatile compounds are released from the aerosol-forming substrate. These compounds condense to form an aerosol. The user then inhales on the oral end of the aerosol-generating article and the aerosol is drawn through a filter provided in the aerosol-generating article and into the user's mouth.
[0103] The embodiment of FIG. 2 shows a cross-sectional view of the heating blade 1020 of FIG.
[0104] The heating blade 1020 has a coating 1060 on at least a portion of its outer surface. In some embodiments, the heating blade 1020 has a coating 1060 on all of its outer surface.
[0105] The heating blade 1020 also includes one or more electrical tracks 1070 .
[0106] Coating 1060 is formed from a glass composition. In one example, the glass composition includes about 30 weight percent to about 70 weight percent silicon oxide, about 0.1 weight percent to about 10 weight percent aluminum oxide, about 2 weight percent to about 30 weight percent boron oxide, about 2 weight percent to about 40 weight percent lithium oxide, about 0.1 weight percent to about 5 weight percent magnesium oxide, and one or more of calcium oxide, gallium oxide, potassium oxide, samarium oxide, strontium oxide, and titanium oxide. In some examples, the glass composition also includes fluorine.
[0107] Exemplary compositions of glass compositions according to the present invention (Examples A, B, C, D and E) were prepared having the compositions shown in Table 1. [Table 1] Table 1
[0108] The compositions of Examples A, B, C, D, and E form deep multicomponent eutectics that combine solubility and high hardness.
[0109] Coatings 1060 having the glass compositions of Examples A, B, C, D, and E are prepared and applied to the heating blade 1020 by: Mixing the starting materials together (see Table 2 below); Pouring the mixed starting materials into a crucible capable of withstanding very high temperatures, such as a crucible made of aluminum oxide or silicon oxide; Melting the starting materials by heating the crucible to 1200°C to 1300°C in an electric furnace for 30 to 60 minutes; granulating the molten material; and drying and grinding the granulated material in a ball mill; sieving the ground material to remove particles larger than 30 μm; mixing the sieved material with an organic liquid to form a fluid; spraying the fluid onto a surface of the heated blade to form a coating; placing the heated blade in a drying oven at 150°C for 10 minutes and then at 300°C for 20 minutes to dry the coating; The heated blade is baked in a furnace at 595°C to 620°C for 20 minutes.
[0110] In some embodiments, instead of being spray painted, the fluid may be screen printed onto the heated blade 1020.
[0111] Thus, glasses having the compositions of Examples A, B, C, D, and E are formed at temperatures approximately 250° C. below the firing temperatures of conventional glasses.
[0112] The glasses formed from the glass compositions of Examples A, B, C, D and E have a compressive strength of 750 to 780 kg / mm 2It can be used as a smooth coating with a Vickers microhardness of .
[0113] Starting materials for the glass compositions of Examples A, B, C, D and E include the following materials shown in Table 2. [Table 2] Table 2
[0114] Table 3 shows the roughness of exemplary glass compositions A, B, C, D and E. [Table 3] Table 3
[0115] The baseline roughness (Ra) of industrial glass is 0.135 μm.
[0116] Thus, the data in Table 3 shows that the glass compositions of Examples A, B, C, D and E all form glasses with much lower roughness than industrial glasses. In fact, the glasses formed from the glass compositions of Examples B and C have the smoothest surfaces of the Examples.
[0117] Thus, the glass made using the glass compositions of Examples A, B, C, D and E can provide a smooth, hard surface that is free of defects and can be formed at relatively low firing temperatures. Thus, when the glass is used as a coating for the heater components of an aerosol generating device, the resulting smooth surface makes the components easier to clean. The relatively low firing temperature, about 250°C lower than typical firing temperatures, means that the delicate electrical tracks in the heater are not damaged during the firing process. This also improves the smoothness of the resulting exterior surface of the components. By making the heater components easier to clean, degradation of the heater is reduced, improving the overall performance of the aerosol generating device.
