Description
[Technical field]
[0001] <Priority claim> This application claims priority to and the benefit of U.S. Provisional Application No. 63 / 172,850, entitled Priming, Method and System for Forward Osmosis Units, filed April 9, 2021, and Swedish Patent Application No. 2151562-2, entitled Priming of Forward Osmosis Units, filed December 21, 2021, the entire contents of which are incorporated by reference herein.
[0002] <Technical field> The present invention relates to the field of priming, and in particular to the priming of forward osmosis units configured to produce dialysate. [Background technology]
[0003] Kidney failure occurs when the kidneys lose the ability to adequately filter waste products from a patient's blood. Waste products build up in the body, leading to an excess of toxins over time. Kidney failure can become life threatening if left untreated. Reduced kidney function, particularly kidney failure, is treated with dialysis. Dialysis removes waste products, toxins, and excess water from the body that normally functioning kidneys would otherwise remove.
[0004] One type of kidney failure treatment is hemodialysis ("HD"), which generally uses diffusion to remove waste products from a patient's blood. To cause diffusion, a diffusion gradient is created across a semi-permeable dialyzer between the blood and an electrolyte solution called dialysate. HD fluid is typically produced by a dialysis machine by mixing a concentrate with clean water.
[0005] Hemofiltration ("HF") is an alternative renal replacement therapy that relies on the convective transport of toxins from the patient's blood. HF is achieved by adding replacement or substitution fluid to the extracorporeal circuit during treatment. The replacement fluid, and fluid accumulated by the patient during treatment, is ultrafiltered over the course of HF treatment, providing a convective transport mechanism that is particularly beneficial in removing middle and large molecules.
[0006] Hemodiafiltration ("HDF") is a treatment modality that combines convective and diffusive clearance. HDF uses dialysate flowing through a dialyzer, similar to standard hemodialysis, to provide diffusive clearance. In addition, a substitution solution is delivered directly to the extracorporeal circuit to provide convective clearance. Here, more fluid is removed from the patient than the patient's excess fluid, causing increased convective transport of waste products from the patient. The additional fluid removed is replaced via a substitution or replacement fluid.
[0007] Another type of kidney failure treatment is peritoneal dialysis ("PD"), in which a dialysis solution, also called dialysate, is infused into the patient's peritoneal cavity via a catheter. The dialysate is in contact with a peritoneal membrane located within the patient's peritoneal cavity. Waste, toxins, and excess water pass from the patient's bloodstream through capillaries in the peritoneum into the dialysate due to diffusion and osmosis, i.e., an osmotic gradient is created across the membrane. An osmotic agent in the PD dialysate provides the osmotic gradient. The used or spent dialysate is pumped out of the patient, removing the waste, toxins, and excess water from the patient. This cycle may be repeated, for example, multiple times. PD fluid is typically prepared in a factory and shipped to the patient's home in ready-to-use bags.
[0008] There are various types of peritoneal dialysis therapies, including continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis ("CAPD"), automated peritoneal dialysis ("APD"), tidal flow dialysis, and continuous flow peritoneal dialysis ("CFPD"). CAPD is a manual dialysis treatment in which fluid transport is driven by gravity. If initially filled with spent dialysate, the patient manually connects an implanted catheter to a drain to allow the used or spent dialysate to drain from the patient's peritoneal cavity. The patient then switches the fluid communication so that the patient catheter is in communication with a bag of fresh dialysate to infuse the patient with fresh dialysate through the catheter. The patient disconnects the catheter from the fresh dialysate bag, allowing the dialysate to dwell in the peritoneal cavity, where transfer of waste, toxins, and excess water occurs. After a dwell period, the patient repeats the manual dialysis procedure, for example, four times a day. If the patient is not initially filled with spent dialysate, the sequence is instead a patient fill, dwell, and drain. Manual peritoneal dialysis requires significant time and effort from the patient, leaving ample room for improvement.
[0009] Automated peritoneal dialysis ("APD") is similar to CAPD in that the dialysis treatment includes drain, fill, and dwell cycles. However, APD machines perform the cycles automatically, typically while the patient sleeps. APD machines relieve the patient from having to manually perform the treatment cycles and from having to transport supplies during the day. APD machines fluidly connect to the patient's implanted catheter, a source or bag of fresh dialysate, and a fluid drain via a patient line. The APD machine pumps fresh dialysate from the fresh dialysate source through the catheter and into the patient's peritoneal cavity. APD machines also allow the dialysate to dwell in the patient's peritoneal cavity, allowing the transfer of waste, toxins, and excess water to occur. The source may contain several liters of dialysate, including multiple solution bags.
[0010] Dialysis treatments may be performed in a clinic or remotely, such as in a patient's home. Transporting dialysate adds cost to treatment and has a negative impact on the environment. Storage of dialysate requires space and large dialysate bags must be handled by users. Thus, a method is needed to reduce or eliminate the amount of dialysate transported to a patient's home. Summary of the Invention
[0011] To reduce the above identified negative consequences from transporting dialysate to the patient's home, dialysate may be generated at the point of care from a concentrate. In the disclosed apparatus and method, forward osmosis ("FO") may be used to dilute the dialysis concentrate with water to provide a diluted dialysis concentrate, which may be referred to as dialysis solution. The dialysis solution may then be mixed with other concentrates to provide a final dialysate that may be used in dialysis therapy to treat a patient. The final dialysate may be a dialysate for PD, a dialysate for HD or HDF, or a replacement or substitution fluid for HF or HDF. FO utilizes an osmotic gradient between the feed fluid and the concentrate as the draw fluid, which is separated by a FO membrane. The osmotic gradient is used as an energy source to move water from the feed fluid to the draw fluid, making FO an attractive low energy alternative. FO membranes are semipermeable membranes and typically have a hollow fiber shape. Hollow fiber FO membranes have thousands of hollow fibers packed in bundles and arranged in a FO unit. One of the feed and draw fluids passes inside the fiber lumen (lumen side), while the other fluid is simultaneously passed outside the lumen (shell side). The feed fluid can be, for example, water or spent (spent) dialysate. If spent dialysate is used as the feed fluid, the amount of purified water used for treatment can be significantly reduced. Alternative FO membrane types are, for example, flat sheet or spiral wound membranes.
[0012] Various dilution performances were observed during testing due to the air present in the FO unit, and some fibers of the FO membrane may remain unused, thereby reducing the effective area of the FO membrane. Therefore, a method is needed to efficiently remove the air present in the FO unit.
[0013] It is an object of the present disclosure to alleviate at least some of the shortcomings of the prior art. It is a further object to provide a method for efficiently removing air present in an FO unit. It is a still further object to provide a method for automatically removing air present in an FO unit.
[0014] These and other objects are achieved, at least in part, by devices and methods according to the independent claims and by embodiments according to the dependent claims.
[0015] According to a first aspect, which may be combined in whole or in part with any other aspect or part thereof, the present disclosure relates to an apparatus for generating a fluid for dialysis. The apparatus comprises a forward osmosis (FO) unit 2 configured to be used to dilute a dialysis concentrate in a process for generating a dialysate. The FO unit includes an FO membrane separating a first side from a second side of the FO unit. The apparatus further comprises a first flow path including the first side and a controller configured to provide priming fluid from a priming fluid source to the first flow path. The apparatus further comprises a return path fluidically connecting an inlet port of the first side to an outlet port of the first side of the FO unit to allow priming fluid discharged from the outlet port to circulate to the inlet port via the return path. The apparatus further comprises a gas collection chamber disposed in the first flow path between the first side and the return path, the gas collection chamber configured to receive gas removed from the first flow path.
[0016] The device allows for efficient priming of the first side by circulating the priming fluid on the first side to the gas collection chamber and providing a return path where gas can accumulate and be vented. Because the priming fluid can be circulated back to the inlet port, it is easier to remove gas from the priming fluid as it contains less gas each time the fluid passes through the gas collection chamber as opposed to continually using fresh priming fluid for priming. Also, the priming fluid can be reused during priming so that less priming fluid is wasted.
[0017] According to some embodiments, the controller is configured to monitor a level of priming liquid in the gas collection chamber and provide priming liquid to the gas collection chamber until the level of priming liquid in the gas collection chamber reaches a predetermined level, whereby gas accumulates in the gas collection chamber at the same time that the gas collection chamber contains sufficient priming liquid to provide a flow of priming liquid from the gas collection chamber.
[0018] According to some embodiments, the device is configured to vent gas from the gas collection chamber while providing priming liquid to the gas collection chamber, thereby removing gas from the first flow path.
[0019] According to some embodiments, the gas collection chamber comprises a gas outlet port for exhausting gas from the gas collection chamber, whereby gas may be exhausted from the gas collection chamber.
[0020] According to some embodiments, the device includes a gas collection pathway fluidly connecting a gas outlet port of the gas collection chamber to a drain, whereby gas may be transported from the gas collection chamber to the drain.
[0021] According to some embodiments, the device is configured to provide priming fluid from a priming fluid source to a first side of the FO unit via a first flow path and a gas collection chamber to fill the first side with priming fluid, whereby the first side may be filled with priming fluid that has already been degassed, supporting the resulting degassing of the first side.
[0022] According to some embodiments, the controller is configured to provide priming fluid from a priming fluid source through the first flow path and the gas collection chamber to the first side of the FO unit when the level of priming fluid in the gas collection chamber reaches a predetermined level, such that a sufficient amount of priming fluid is present in the gas collection chamber to allow a flow of priming fluid through the gas collection chamber at the same time that gas accumulates in the gas collection chamber.
[0023] According to some embodiments, the controller is configured to stop flow through the return flow path while priming fluid is provided from the priming fluid source to the first flow path, so that filling of the gas collection chamber and / or the first side may be more easily controlled.
[0024] According to some embodiments, the control device is configured to circulate priming fluid provided to the first side in a first direction in a recirculation path including the first side, a return path, and a gas collection chamber, whereby air bubbles on the first side may be removed and collected in the gas collection chamber.
[0025] According to some embodiments, the control device is configured to circulate the priming liquid in a second direction in the recirculation path. Thus, more air bubbles on the first side may be collected in the gas collection chamber, since flow in the other direction may cause other air bubbles to be released from the first side relative to flow in the first direction. Also, if the first direction is from the top (inlet port) to the bottom (outlet port) of the first side and the second direction is from the bottom (outlet port) to the top (inlet port) of the first side, the flow in the first direction may remove air bubbles from the first side, while the flow in the second direction may transport air bubbles captured at the inlet of the first side to the gas collection chamber.
[0026] According to some embodiments, the controller is configured to cycle the priming fluid in the first direction in the recirculation path 12 and the second direction in the recirculation path 12 at least once until one or more predetermined priming criteria are met, whereby more air bubbles may be liberated and transported to the gas collection chamber, because the repeated shifts in direction cause a change in the direction of the shear force on the first side, causing more air bubbles to be liberated.
[0027] According to some embodiments, the device comprises a second flow path including a second side for providing fluid to the second side, and the control arrangement is configured to provide fluid from a solution source via an inlet port to the second side via the second flow path upon satisfaction of one or more predetermined priming criteria, the inlet port being disposed below the outlet port of the second side. Thus, the second side is also primed. The second side may be primed before, during, and / or after the first side is primed.
[0028] According to some embodiments, the control device is configured to circulate the priming fluid in a first direction at a first flow rate and to circulate the priming fluid in a second direction at a second flow rate, the first flow rate being different from the second flow rate. Thus, a different magnitude of shear force may be achieved on the first side. Also, the flow rates may be different because they are intended to achieve different things, for example, the first flow rate may be intended to liberate air bubbles from the first side, while the second flow rate may be intended to transport the liberated air bubbles to a gas collection chamber.
[0029] According to some embodiments, the first flow rate is greater than the second flow rate. For example, in the second direction, if the purpose of the second flow rate is only to transport air bubbles to the gas collection chamber, it may be sufficient to have a low flow rate. The larger first flow rate creates a higher shear force on the first side that removes air bubbles more easily.
[0030] According to some embodiments, the controller is configured to circulate the priming fluid in the recirculation path in a first direction for a first predetermined time period and to circulate the priming fluid in the recirculation path in a second direction for a second time period, the first time period and the second time period having different lengths, whereby priming may be optimized with respect to time since the effect to be achieved in either direction of flow is different and accordingly requires longer or shorter times to be achieved.
[0031] According to some embodiments, the first period of time is longer than the second period of time, such that a longer transport of priming liquid from the first side to the gas collection chamber may be achieved during the first period of time relative to the second period of time.
[0032] According to some embodiments, the control device includes at least one pump, whereby providing priming fluid and / or circulating the priming fluid may be accomplished by one or more pumps.
[0033] According to some embodiments, the at least one pump includes a first pump configured to provide priming fluid from a priming fluid source to the first pathway.
[0034] According to some embodiments, the at least one pump includes a second pump configured to circulate the priming fluid in the recirculation path.
[0035] According to some embodiments, the gas collection chamber comprises at least two fluid ports through which priming fluid can enter and exit, such that priming fluid may be transported in two opposing directions through the gas collection chamber.
[0036] According to some embodiments, the priming fluid is the same fluid used during production to dilute the dialysis concentrate, the priming fluid being water or spent dialysis solution, thus making handling of the device during priming easier since it is not necessary to prepare the device differently than when producing dialysis fluid.
[0037] According to a second aspect, which may be combined in whole or in part with any other aspect or portion thereof, the present disclosure relates to a method for priming a forward osmosis (FO) unit configured to be used to dilute a dialysis concentrate in a process for producing a dialysate. The FO unit includes a FO membrane separating a first side from a second side of the FO unit. The method includes providing a priming solution to a first flow path including the first side and a gas collection chamber configured to receive gas removed from the first flow path. The method further includes circulating the provided priming solution in a recirculation path including the first side, a return path, and the gas collection chamber. The return path fluidly connects an inlet port of the first side to an outlet port of the first side of the FO unit.
[0038] In some embodiments, providing includes monitoring a level of priming fluid in the gas collection chamber and providing priming fluid to the gas collection chamber until the level of priming fluid in the gas collection chamber reaches a predetermined level.
[0039] According to some embodiments, the method includes evacuating gas from the gas collection chamber while providing priming liquid to the gas collection chamber.
[0040] According to some embodiments, the method includes venting gas from the gas collection chamber to a drain via a gas collection pathway that fluidly connects a gas outlet port of the gas collection chamber to the drain.
[0041] According to some embodiments, the method includes providing priming fluid from a priming fluid source to a first side of the FO unit via a first flow path and a gas collection chamber to fill the first side with priming fluid.
[0042] According to some embodiments, the method includes providing priming fluid from a priming fluid source through a first flow path and the gas collection chamber to a first side of the FO unit when a level of priming fluid in the gas collection chamber reaches a predetermined level.
[0043] According to some embodiments, providing includes stopping flow through the return flow path while priming fluid is provided from the priming fluid source to the first flow path.
[0044] According to some embodiments, the method includes circulating a priming fluid provided to a first side in a first direction in a recirculation path.
[0045] According to some embodiments, the method includes circulating the priming fluid in a second direction in a recirculation path.
[0046] According to some embodiments, the method includes repeatedly circulating priming fluid in a first direction in a recirculation path and circulating priming fluid in a second direction in the recirculation path until one or more predetermined priming criteria are met.
[0047] According to some embodiments, when one or more predetermined priming criteria are met, the method includes providing fluid from a solution source via a second flow path to an inlet port on the second side disposed below the outlet port on the second side.
[0048] According to some embodiments, the method includes circulating the priming fluid in a first direction at a first flow rate and circulating the priming fluid in a second direction at a second flow rate, the first flow rate being different from the second flow rate.
[0049] According to some embodiments, the first flow rate is greater than the second flow rate.
[0050] According to some embodiments, the method includes circulating the priming fluid in a first direction in the recirculation path for a first predetermined time period and circulating the priming fluid in a second direction in the recirculation path for a second time period, the first time period and the second time period having different lengths.

[Figure 4A] , [Figure 4B] , [Figure 4C] , [Figure 4D] , [Figure 4E] A priming sequence for priming the FO unit of FIGS. 1 and 5 according to some embodiments of the present disclosure will now be described. [Diagram 5] An apparatus for generating dialysis solution according to some embodiments of the present disclosure is described. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
[0055] To produce the correct dialysis solution in a timely manner, continuous and efficient water extraction from the feed solution is very important. Feed and draw solutions are often available in limited quantities and care should be taken to use them efficiently. The FO process may also be operated in a single pass mode, whereby high efficiency of the FO process is important to fully utilize the osmotic gradient. If some of the hollow fibers of the hollow fiber FO membrane are not available due to the presence of gas such as air that stops the flow of the solution in the lumen, the effective area of the FO membrane is reduced and the efficiency of the FO process is reduced. This can be especially problematic on one of the first and second sides, where the fluid being produced is introduced from the top and discharged from the bottom of that side. Here, any excess gas in the FO unit will not follow the flow of the fluid because it is lighter than the fluid and will be trapped at the inlet (top) or will be trapped in the lumen due to the narrowness of the lumen. Instead the gas remains in the FO unit. Then there is a risk that the concentrated solution will not be sufficiently diluted and the final dialysis solution will not be produced correctly. "Gas" as used herein includes air or any other gas initially present in the device, any air or other gas fed to the FO unit, or any air or other gas resulting from degassing of a fluid present in the device. Alternative FO membrane types that may be used in the present disclosure are, for example, flat sheet membranes or spiral wound membranes.
[0056] In order to avoid the above-mentioned situation, a device for generating fluid for dialysis is proposed, which is configured for efficient priming of its FO unit. Also, a method for efficient priming, which can be automatically performed by the device, is disclosed. The device comprises a gas collection chamber and a return path. The gas collection chamber allows gas to be collected and removed from a first side of the FO unit. The return path connects an outlet of the first side of the FO unit to an inlet of the same first side of the FO unit. The FO unit is arranged such that during generation, fluid is introduced from the top (inlet port) and discharged from the bottom (outlet port) of the first side. The return path is external to the FO unit. The return path allows the priming liquid to recirculate in a recirculation path including the first side of the FO unit, the return path and the gas collection chamber. Then, the gas can be transported by the circulating priming liquid and released in the gas collection chamber. In some embodiments, the priming liquid is continuously pumped in the opposite direction to more efficiently remove the gas trapped inside the FO unit on the first side. The priming fluid can then be pumped at a high flow rate in a first direction (same as the flow direction during production) to remove air bubbles from the lumen, and at a low flow rate in a second direction (opposite to the flow direction during production) to transport the removed air bubbles trapped at the top of the first side from the first side to a gas collection chamber. Thus, the present invention removes gas from the FO unit, thereby increasing the effective area of the FO membrane. Thereby, the water extraction efficiency can be increased, and in some embodiments even maximized, by making the entire FO membrane surface area available for water extraction.
[0057] References that are the same throughout the figures may not be described in the text for each embodiment, but nevertheless include all of the described structures, functions, and alternatives for each embodiment.
[0058] FIG. 1 illustrates a portion 50 of an apparatus 1 for generating a fluid for dialysis. The portion 50 includes components that enable efficient priming of the FO unit 2. However, how the portion 50 operates in the context of generating a fluid for dialysis will first be described. The portion 50 includes an FO unit 2, a first flow path 3, and a second flow path 4. The FO unit 2 includes an FO membrane 2c that separates a first side 2a from a second side 2b of the FO unit 2. The "sides" of the unit 2 may be referred to herein as "compartments" or "chambers." The FO unit 2 typically includes a cartridge that encloses the first side 2a, the second side 2b, and the FO membrane 2c. The first flow path 3 is configured to provide a first fluid to the first side 2a of the FO unit 2 and to remove the first fluid output from the first side 2a. The second flow path 4 is configured to provide a second fluid to the second side 2b of the FO unit 2 and to remove the second fluid from the second side 2b. Depending on the composition of the fluids, one fluid may be referred to as the feed solution and the other fluid as the draw solution. In the FO process, the feed solution drains water to the draw solution due to an osmotic gradient. In some embodiments, during production, a feed solution such as water or spent dialysate is passed through the first side 2a. The first fluid is then the feed solution, and the first side 2a may be referred to as the feed side. The spent dialysate may also be referred to herein as spent dialysate or effluent. A draw solution such as a dialysis concentrate is passed through the second side 2b. The second fluid is then the draw solution, and the second side 2b may be referred to as the draw side. In the FO unit 2, water from the feed solution travels through the FO membrane 2c to the dialysis concentrate, thereby diluting the dialysis concentrate to a diluted dialysis concentrate solution. This solution may then be mixed with one or more other concentrates to provide the final dialysis solution. Thus, the FO unit 2 is configured to be used to dilute the dialysis concentrate in a process for producing a dialysis solution. The dewatered feed liquid is typically sent to a drain.
[0059] In the illustrated embodiment of FIG. 1, the FO unit 2 has an inlet port E in fluid communication with the first side 2a through which a first fluid is passed to the first side 2a. inand an outlet port E in fluid communication with the first side 2a through which the first fluid is passed from the first side 2a. out Inlet port E in is the outlet port E out The FO unit 2 also has an inlet port L that is in fluid communication with the second side 2b and through which the second solution is passed to the second side 2b. in and an outlet port L in fluid communication with the second side 2b through which the second solution is passed from the second side 2b. out and outlet port L out is the inlet port L in To allow for efficient priming, the first flow path 3 further comprises a gas collection chamber 5. The gas collection chamber 5 is configured to receive gas removed from the first flow path 3, the function of which is described in more detail below with respect to priming.
[0060] The first flow path 3 comprises a first side input line 3a disposed between a point P1 connected to a source of the first fluid and an inlet port 5a (FIG. 2) of the gas collection chamber 5. The first side input line 3a fluidly connects the point P1 and the inlet port 5a. The first side input line valve 20b is configured to operate with the first side input line 3a to regulate the flow in the first side input line 3a. The first flow path 3 further comprises a container line 3b disposed between the container 19 and the point P1, which connects the container 19 and the point P1. A first pump 6 is disposed to operate with the container line 3b to provide a flow in the container line 3b. A container valve 20p is connected to the container line 3b. A direct current line 3e is disposed between the container line 3b and the first side input line 3a. Thus, the direct current line 3e fluidly connects the container line 3b and the first side input line 3a. The DC line 3e connects to the container line 3b between the container valve 20p and the first pump 6. The DC line valve 20s is connected to the DC line 3e. The DC line 3e is connected to the first side input line 3a between the first side input valve 20b and the gas collection chamber 5. The container 19 is a source of a first fluid and contains here a first fluid, for example spent dialysate. The spent dialysate has been previously pumped from a patient connected to the container 19 at point P1 using the first pump 6. Alternatively, point P1 is connected to a source of water, for example a water tap. The first pump 6 may then pump water to the container 19 and store it for later use. In some embodiments, the first pump 6 pumps spent dialysate from the container 19 to the first side input line 3a, gas collection chamber 5, etc., by opening the container valve 20p and the first side input line valve 20b, closing the direct current line valve 20s, and pumping (in the reverse direction) with the first pump 6. Thus, in some embodiments, the first pump 6 is a bidirectional pump. The spent dialysate or water is then pumped from the container 19 to the first side input line 3a via the container line 3b.Alternatively, the first pump 6 may directly pump spent dialysate from a patient or other source connected to point P1 or water from a water tap by pumping (forward) with the first pump 6, opening the DC line valve 20s, and closing the container valve 20p and the first side input line valve 20b. The spent dialysate or water is then pumped to the first side input line 3a via the container line 3b and the DC line 3e. The first pump 6 is, for example, a positive displacement pump, such as a piston pump, operated in open loop (specific voltage or frequency command from the controller 50 to provide a specific flow rate). Alternatively, the first pump 6 is a non-positive displacement pump operated with feedback from a flow sensor 43 to reach a specific flow rate. The flow sensor 43 as illustrated in FIG. 1 is connected to the container line 3b between the first pump 6 and point P1, but may instead be connected to the container line 3b on any side of the first pump 6, except between the container 19 and the connection point of the DC line 3e to the container line 3b. The first flow path 3 is connected to the outlet port 5b (FIG. 2) and the inlet port E of the gas collection chamber 5. in The gas collection chamber 5 further includes a connecting line 3c disposed between the outlet port 5b and the inlet port E. in and a first pump 6 is arranged to pump fluid from a container 19 or other source at point P1 of the first fluid line 3a to provide the first fluid to the first side 2a through the gas collection chamber 5. The first flow path 3 also includes a first side 2a. The first flow path 3 further includes an exhaust line 3d. The exhaust line 3d is connected to an outlet port E. out and the discharge point P4, from which the spent first fluid can be passed to a drain (reference number 31 in FIG. 5). Thus, the discharge line 3d is connected to the outlet port E outand a drain. A second pump 7 is arranged in operation with the exhaust line 3d to provide a fluid flow therein. An exhaust valve 20i is arranged to regulate the flow in the exhaust line 3d. The exhaust valve 20i is arranged in operation with the exhaust line 3d between a connection point of the return path 8 to the exhaust line 3d and a connection point of the gas recovery path 9 to the exhaust line 3d.
[0061] The second flow path 4 includes a second side input line 4b. The second side input line 4b is connected to a second fluid source at point P3 and an inlet port L in and a second fluid source and an inlet port L. in and the second side 2b. In some embodiments, point P3 is an outlet port to the main line 4f (FIG. 5) that can be mixed directly from the concentrate in the concentrate container 15. The second side flow path 4 further comprises a concentrate line 4d disposed between the concentrate container 15 and point P3 for connecting the concentrate container 15 and point P3. A concentrate pump 10 is disposed to operate with the concentrate line 4d to provide flow in the concentrate line 4d. The concentrate container 15 comprises, for example, a fluid dialysis concentrate. The concentrate pump 10 is disposed and configured to pump fluid from the concentrate container 15 or other source at point P3 in the second side input line 4b to provide a second fluid, a concentrate liquid, to the second side 2b. The second flow path 4 also includes a second side 2b. The second flow path 4 further comprises a second side output line 4c. The second side output line 4c is connected to an output port L. out and point P2, from where the second fluid is passed, for example, to a diluent container (see reference number 16 in FIG. 5) or directly for further mixing. Thus, the second side output line 4c is connected to the output port outand a collection container or directly provide the diluted concentrate for further mixing. The concentrate pump 10 is arranged and configured to provide flow from a source of a second fluid, such as a concentrate container 15, to the second side 2b and through the second side 2b and the second side output line 4c to the diluent container. In FIG. 1, the first flow path 3 is configured to pass the first fluid through the first side 2a, and the second flow path 4 is configured to pass the second fluid through the second side 2b. In some embodiments, a flow sensor 45 is arranged and configured to sense the flow rate of the diluted concentrate output from the second side 2b. The flow sensor 45 is connected to the second side output line 4c.
[0062] The geometry of the FO membrane 2c here is a hollow fiber. The FO membrane 2c is a water-permeable membrane. The FO membrane 2c is designed to be more or less exclusively selective for the permeating water molecules, which allows the FO membrane 2c to separate water from all other contaminants. The FO membrane 2c typically has a pore size in the nanometer (nm) range, for example 0.5-5 nm or less, depending on the solutes that are intended to be blocked. FO units suitable for the FO unit 2 may be provided, for example, by Aquaporin, Asahi Kasei, Berghof, CSM, FTS H2O™, Koch Membrane Systems, Polyfera, Toyobo and Toray.
[0063] The controller 60 is configured to control the device 1 to perform a plurality of procedures. The controller 60 includes a control unit 30, a valve device 20 (20a-20p), and at least one pump 6, 7, 10. The valve device 20 is arranged and configured to configure a plurality of different flow paths of the device 1. In some embodiments, the controller 60 is configured to control the device 1 to perform a procedure or procedure steps for diluting a dialysis concentrate and generating a dialysate. The control unit 30 may include at least one memory and at least one processor. The at least one memory includes computer instructions for performing a procedure or procedure steps for diluting a dialysis concentrate and generating a dialysate. When executed on the at least one processor, the control unit 30 controls at least one pump and / or one or more valves 20 of the device 1 to perform one or more procedures described herein.
[0064] The device 1 is also configured to perform one or more priming procedures for the FO unit 2. The device 1 therefore comprises a return path 8 and a gas collection chamber 5. The priming liquid used for the one or more priming procedures is a fluid provided at the point P1, for example spent dialysis fluid or water from the container 19, or a fluid otherwise provided at the point P1. The priming liquid may therefore be the same feed liquid used during the production for diluting the dialysis concentrate. The control device 60 is also configured to control the device 1 to perform one or more priming procedures described in detail herein. The return path 8 is arranged between the discharge line 3d and the first side input line 3a. The return path 8 therefore fluidly connects the discharge line 3d and the first side input line 3a. The return path 8 may include one or more lines. The return path 8 is connected to the discharge line 3d between the second pump 7 and the discharge valve 20i. The return path 8 is further connected to the first side input line 3a at a point between the connection point of the DC line 3e with the first side input line 3a and the inlet port 5a of the gas collection chamber 5. Thus, the device 1 is connected to the inlet port E of the first side 2a. into outlet port E on the first side 2a of FO unit 2. out The device 1 includes a return path 8 that is fluidly connected to the second pump 7. A return path valve 20c is connected to the return path 8 to regulate the flow of the return path 8. When the device 1 is producing a diluted dialysis concentrate, the return path valve 20c is closed and the return path 8 is not used. In some embodiments, an air bubble sensor 44 is connected to the return path 8 to detect the presence of air bubbles, such as air bubbles, in the return path 8. Furthermore, the gas collection chamber 5 is disposed in the first flow path 3 between the first side 2a and the return path 8. In some embodiments, the device 1 includes a gas collection path 9 for removing gas from the gas collection chamber 5. The gas collection path 9 is disposed between the gas outlet port 5c of the gas collection chamber 5 and the exhaust line 3d. Thus, the gas collection path 9 fluidly connects the gas outlet port 5c and the exhaust line 3d. The gas collection path 9 is connected to the exhaust line 3d downstream of the second pump 7 and downstream of the connection point of the return path 8 with the exhaust line 3d. Thus, the device 1 includes a gas collection path 9 that fluidly connects the gas outlet port 5c of the gas collection chamber 5 to a drain 31 (FIG. 5). A gas collection path valve 20n is connected to the gas collection path 9 for regulating flow therethrough.
[0065] Return path 8 is through exit port E out The priming fluid discharged from the inlet port E is returned to the inlet port E via the return path 8. inThe return path 8, the gas collection chamber 5, and the first side 2a are all included in the recirculation path 12. The recirculation path 12 also includes the connection line 3c, a portion of the first side input line 3a, and a portion of the discharge line 3d. The priming fluid present in the recirculation path 12 is recirculated in the recirculation path 12 by closing the discharge valve 20i, the gas collection path valve 20n, the direct line valve 20s, and the first side input line valve 20b, opening the return path valve 20c, and operating the second pump 7. In some embodiments, the second pump 7 is configured to operate in two directions, a first direction (here, forward) and a second direction (here, reverse). And the second pump 7 is configured to provide flows in opposite directions in the recirculation path 12. The second pump 7 is, for example, a positive displacement or non-positive displacement pump that can operate in both directions, and therefore, it is bidirectional. If the second pump 7 is a positive displacement pump, it may operate in an open loop (a specific voltage or frequency command from the controller 50 to provide a specific flow rate). If the second pump is a non-positive displacement pump, it may operate with feedback from a flow sensor 41 to reach a specific flow rate (in FIG. 1 the flow sensor 41 is connected to the return path 8, but may be connected anywhere in the recirculation path 12) or with feedback from one or more pressure sensors 42a, 42b to reach a specific pressure, at least one sensor connected to the recirculation path 8 such that the sensor senses the pressure of the fluid input to the first side 2a. In FIG. 1, the second pump 7 and the inlet port E are connected to the recirculation path 8 to sense the pressure when the fluid is pumped in the first direction. in A first pressure sensor 42a is connected in the recirculation path 8 between the second pump 7 and the outlet port E to sense the pressure when the fluid is pumped in the second direction. out A second pressure sensor 42b is connected to the recirculation path 8 between the first pressure sensor 42b and the second pressure sensor 42b.
[0066] FIG. 2 illustrates a schematic diagram of the gas collection chamber 5 of FIG. 1 according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. The gas collection chamber 5 can be, for example, a degassing chamber, a drip chamber, or an air trap. The gas collection chamber 5 includes a wall segment 5d that encloses a volume 55. The wall segment 55 can be, for example, cylindrical with a top and a bottom (e.g., like a can). The wall 5d includes an inlet port 5a, an outlet port 5b, and a gas outlet port 5c. In one embodiment, these ports are the only connections between the volume 55 and the outside of the gas collection chamber 5. When connected to the device 1, the ports are connected to fluid paths or lines as described above. The inlet port 5a is typically located at a higher level than the outlet port 5b to facilitate gas release from the priming liquid in the gas collection chamber 5 before the priming liquid is passed through the outlet port 5b. However, instead, the priming liquid may be input to the gas collection chamber 5 through the outlet port 5b and output through the inlet port 5a, and the gas in the fluid is nevertheless released within the gas collection chamber 5. The inlet port 5a and the outlet port 5b are typically located on opposite sides of the wall segment 5d of the gas collection chamber 5. One or both of the ports 5a, 5b may be tangentially located within the wall segment 5d. The fluid introduced through the tangentially located ports creates vortexes that promote separation of the gas from the fluid by keeping the fluid close to the wall segment 5d and keeping the gas in a central area of the gas collection chamber 5. The vortexes also hold the fluid close to the fluid ports 5a, 5b to ensure that the fluid is present at the port where the fluid is discharged from the gas collection chamber 5. Thus, the gas collection chamber 5 comprises at least two fluid ports 5a, 5b, and the priming liquid can enter and exit through either of the at least two ports. The gas outlet port 5c is located to exhaust the gas from the gas collection chamber 5. The gas outlet port 5c is typically located at the top, eg, upper portion, of the wall segment 55. In some embodiments, the gas collection pathway 9 fluidly connects the gas outlet port 5c of the gas collection chamber 5 to a drain. This allows gas to accumulate in the gas collection chamber 5 and be easily removed from the gas collection chamber 5. The level sensor device 22 is arranged and configured to measure the level 35 of fluid in the gas collection chamber 5. In one embodiment, the level sensor device 22 comprises two sensors, an upper sensor is arranged above the lower sensor. The two sensors indicate whether they sense fluid or not. The fluid level 35 should typically be arranged between the two sensors, so if neither of the sensors indicates a sensed fluid, the level is too low. The fluid level 35 is adequate if the lower sensor senses fluid but the upper sensor does not. If both sensors indicate a sensed fluid, the fluid level is too high. The level sensor device 22 is configured to transmit a sensed value or output to the control unit 30 of the control device 60, which is configured to receive the sensed value or output and monitor the level based thereon. Based on the monitoring, the gas collection chamber 5 may be automatically filled so that the fluid level is adequate.
[0067] At least one memory of the control unit 30 stores computer instructions for performing one or more priming procedures. When at least one processor of the control unit 30 executes the instructions, at least one pump 6, 7, 10 and the valve arrangement 20 are controlled to perform one or more priming processes. For example, the control unit 30 may be configured to send one or more control signals or control data to at least one pump 6, 7, 10 and the valve of the valve arrangement 20. The pump may be controlled to a specific speed corresponding to a specific flow rate. In general, the valve connected to the line or pathway may be an on / off valve. When the valve is open, the flow of fluid in the line or pathway is allowed, and when the valve is closed, the flow of fluid in the line or pathway is stopped. Alternatively, the valve may be a control valve that may be controlled to allow a specific flow between zero flow and unimpeded flow.
[0068] To perform one or more procedures, the controller 60 is configured to perform a number of strategies. For example, the controller 60 is configured to perform a method such as that illustrated in the flowchart of FIG. 3 described below. In some embodiments, the controller 60 is configured to perform one or more of the following: - Providing priming fluid from a priming fluid source to the first flow path 3. In some embodiments, the first pump 6 is arranged and configured to provide priming fluid from a priming fluid source to the first flow path 3. The priming fluid source is, for example, a container 19 or other source connected to point P1. The control unit 30 then sends control signals / data to the first pump 6 to have a specific speed to provide a specific flow rate or pressure. The control unit 30 also controls appropriate valves to provide the fluid. - monitoring the level of priming liquid in the gas collection chamber 5 and providing priming liquid to the gas collection chamber 5 until the level of priming liquid in the gas collection chamber 5 reaches a predetermined level. For example, a sensed signal or output from the level sensing device 22 may be sent to or collected by a control unit 30 which controls the apparatus 1 based on the sensed signal. - Exhausting gas from the gas collection chamber 5 while providing priming liquid to the gas collection chamber 5. The control unit 30 for example opens the gas collection path valve 20n to allow gas to exit along the gas collection path 9. - providing priming fluid from a priming fluid source to the first side 2a of the FO unit 2 via the first flow path 3 and the gas collection chamber 5 in order to fill the first side 2a with priming fluid. At this time, the control unit 30 for example closes the gas collection path valve 20n. - Providing priming fluid from a priming fluid source to the first side 2a of the FO unit 2 when the level of priming fluid in the gas collection chamber 5 reaches a predetermined level. - Stopping the flow through the return flow path 8 while priming fluid is being provided from a container 19, here a priming fluid source, to the first flow path 3. The control unit 30 then closes the return path valve 20c. - circulating the priming fluid provided on the first side 2a in a first direction in a recirculation path 12. In some embodiments, the recirculation path 12 is defined to include the first side 2a, the return path 8, and the gas collection chamber 5. In some embodiments, the second pump 7 is arranged and configured to circulate the priming fluid in the recirculation path 12. At this time, the control unit 30 opens the return path valve 20c, closes the first side input line valve 20b, and directs the flow line valve 20s and the exhaust valve 20i to control the second pump 7 to a specific speed to provide a specific flow rate or pressure. - circulating the priming fluid in a second direction in the recirculation path 12, whereupon the control unit 30 controls the second pump 7 at a predefined speed in the second direction to provide a predefined flow rate or pressure. - Repeating (i) the circulation of priming fluid in a first direction in the recirculation path 12 and (ii) the circulation of priming fluid in a second direction in the recirculation path until one or more predetermined priming criteria are met, for example at least once. - upon satisfaction of one or more predetermined priming criteria, a solution is supplied from the solution source 15 via a second flow path to the inlet port L of the second side 2b. in In some embodiments, the inlet port L in is the outlet port L of the second side 2b out The control unit 30 then controls the concentrate pump 10 at a predetermined speed to provide a predetermined flow rate or pressure. circulating the priming fluid in a first direction at a first flow rate and circulating the priming fluid in a second direction at a second flow rate, the first flow rate being different from the second flow rate. In some embodiments, the first flow rate is greater than the second flow rate. circulating the priming fluid in the recirculation path 12 in a first direction for a first predetermined time period and circulating the priming fluid in the recirculation path 12 in a second direction for a second time period, the first time period and the second time period having different lengths. In some embodiments, the first time period is longer than the second time period.
[0069] A method for priming the FO unit 2 will now be described with reference to the flow chart of FIG. 3 and to FIGS. 4A-4E, which show different steps of priming. To help identify the current flow path, open valves are shown as filled valves and closed valves are not filled, according to the legends shown in the figures. In FIGS. 4A-4E, certain reference numbers have been omitted for clarity of steps, but nevertheless include all the structures, functions and alternatives described in relation to FIGS. 1 and 5. Also, certain components in FIG. 1, such as pressure sensors, flow sensors and air bubble detectors, have been omitted from FIGS. 4A-4E and 5 to make these figures more clear, but it will be understood that each of such omitted components may also be provided in FIGS. 4A-4E and 5, including all the structures, functions and alternatives discussed in relation to FIG. 1. The method is typically stored as a computer program on a computer-readable medium, such as one or more memories of the control unit 30 of the device 1. The computer program includes instructions for operating the device 1 as described in accordance with any one of the embodiments described herein to perform the method in accordance with any one of the embodiments described herein. When the instructions are executed by one or more processors of the control unit 30 of the device 1, one or more processes for priming the FO unit 2 are performed.
[0070] The FO unit 2 is, for example, the FO unit in any of the other figures. The FO unit 2 is maintained in the same position during priming as illustrated in the figure, which is the same as when performing the process of diluting the dialysis concentrate, as previously described. In this position, when performing the process of diluting the dialysis concentrate, the first fluid is introduced through the inlet port E in and the outlet port E of the first side 2a. out The second fluid is discharged at the inlet port L in and the outlet port L of the second side 2b out is discharged.
[0071] The proposed method may be used to remove gas from the first side 2a according to a predetermined routine, for example at predetermined occasions throughout a recurring 24-hour treatment cycle. The method is executed by the described control device 60, for example by controlling the valves of the valve device 20, by controlling one or more pumps 6, 7, 10, by monitoring the levels, etc. The control device 60 provides appropriate control signals to the valves and pumps to execute the method, and receives operational and other data, such as level data. The method may be executed before each use of the device 1, and thus before each time the process of diluting the dialysis concentrate is started. Alternatively or in combination with this, an evaluation of the current priming state of the first side 2a may reveal when the method should be performed. For example, the method may be executed when the level in the gas collection chamber 5 is too low. At this time, a significant amount of air may have been added via the first fluid source, which may enter the first side 2a and thereby alter the water extraction performance. Alternatively, the method may be performed upon obtaining an unexpectedly high conductivity and / or an unexpectedly low flow rate of the fluid output from the second side 2b, taking into account the current operating point and recent operating history. Priming may thus be performed during production, for example, in response to a decrease in the performance of the device (e.g. an increase in the conductivity of the diluted concentrate liquid measured by the conductivity sensor 11 in FIG. 5, or a decrease in the flow rate of the diluted concentrate liquid measured by the flow sensor 45 connected to the second side output line 4c). The measured conductivity is compared to an expected conductivity, and priming is initiated in response to the measured conductivity being greater than the expected conductivity. The expected conductivity may be a conductivity value, a threshold value, or an interval. Alternatively or in combination, the flow rate of the diluted concentrate liquid is compared to an expected flow rate, and priming is initiated in response to the measured flow rate being lower than the expected flow rate. The expected flow rate may be a flow rate value, a threshold value, or an interval. At this time, production must be temporarily interrupted, but may be resumed after priming. The method may thus be triggered by various trigger conditions.
[0072] The method may include connecting the container line 3b to the container 19 or connecting the point P1 to a source of priming fluid before priming begins. Alternatively, the container line 3b may already be connected to the container 19 or to a point P1 connected to a source of priming fluid. The method may include pumping priming fluid from the source of priming fluid to the container 19 using the first pump 6. At this time, the container valve 20p is open and the first side input line valve 20b and the direct line valve 20s are closed. The source of priming fluid is, for example, spent dialysate from the patient or a water tap. The priming fluid from the patient is spent dialysate. The priming fluid may be the same fluid used during production.
[0073] The method includes providing S1 priming fluid to the first flow path 3. The priming fluid is provided from a source of priming fluid. As previously explained, the first flow path 3 comprises a gas collection chamber 5 and a first side 2a. Providing S1 priming fluid may be performed by operating the first fluid pump 6, now in the reverse direction, opening the container valve 20p and the first side input line valve 20b, and closing the direct line valve 20s (as shown in FIG. 4A). The priming fluid is then pumped from the container 19 into the first side input line 3a and flows to the gas collection chamber 5. Alternatively, the priming fluid is pumped directly from point P1 by pumping in the forward direction with the first pump 6, opening the direct line valve 20s, and closing the container valve 20p and the first side input line 20b. Providing S1 priming fluid thus includes providing the priming fluid to the gas collection chamber 5. The direction of the priming liquid is indicated by a solid arrow in FIG. 4A. The priming liquid pushes any gas present in the first side input line 3a into the gas collection chamber 5. In some embodiments, the method includes venting gas from the gas collection chamber 5 while providing the priming liquid to the gas collection chamber 5. During providing S1 of the priming liquid to the gas collection chamber 5, the exhaust valve 20i and the return path valve 20c are closed to allow the level in the gas collection chamber 5 to rise and vent the gas present in the gas collection chamber 5. In other words, providing S1 may include stopping the flow through the return path 8 while the priming liquid is provided from the priming liquid source to the first path 3. The gas may be vented outside the gas collection chamber 5 through a one-way valve (not shown) with leakage protection disposed at the gas outlet port 5c of the gas collection chamber 5. In some embodiments, the method includes venting the gas from the gas collection chamber 5 to a drain through the gas collection path 9. A gas collection path 9 fluidly connects the gas outlet port 5c of the gas collection chamber 5 to the drain. The direction of exhaust gas from the gas collection chamber 5 through the gas collection path 9 and exhaust line 3d to the drain is shown by the dotted arrow in Figure 4A.At this time, point P4 is connected to the drain. Here, exhausting of gas to the drain is performed by opening the gas collection path valve 20n. In some embodiments, providing S1 includes monitoring the level of priming liquid in the gas collection chamber 5 and providing priming liquid to the gas collection chamber 5 until the level of priming liquid in the gas collection chamber 5 reaches a predetermined level. The predetermined level is, for example, a level between the two level sensors. At this time, the gas collection chamber 5 is, for example, between 50% and 90% full. Alternatively, the predetermined level is a level when the gas collection chamber 5 is considered to be completely filled, which occurs when both or at least the top level sensor senses fluid in the gas collection chamber 5. Thus, the method includes providing priming liquid to the gas collection chamber 5 unless the level has been reached or is at the predetermined level.
[0074] After the predetermined level is reached, in some embodiments, the method includes providing priming fluid to the first side 2a via the gas collection chamber 5, as illustrated in FIG. 4B. Thus, in some embodiments, the method includes providing priming fluid S1B from a priming fluid source to the first side 2a of the FO unit 2 via the first flow path 3 and the gas collection chamber 5 when the level of priming fluid in the gas collection chamber 5 reaches a predetermined level. Providing priming fluid S1B is performed, for example, by operating the first fluid pump 6, here in the reverse direction, opening the reservoir valve 20p, the first side input line valve 20b and the exhaust valve 20i, and closing the direct line valve 20s, the gas collection path valve 20n and the return path valve 20c. If the gas collection chamber 5 already contains a predetermined level of priming fluid, providing S1 includes providing priming fluid directly to the first side 2a via the gas collection chamber 5 without first filling the gas collection chamber 5.
[0075] In some embodiments, the pressure of the first side 2a is reduced during and / or immediately after filling the first side 2a. Reduced pressure means a pressure lower than atmospheric pressure. Such reduced pressure increases the size of the air bubbles in the first side 2a, so that the air bubbles are more easily released from inside the lumen. The reduced pressure also degass the fluid in the first side 2a. The reduced pressure may be achieved in several ways. In one alternative, the second pump 7 is then a non-positive displacement pump that allows leakage through the pump. When filling the first side 2a, the second pump 7 may then not operate or may operate to pump towards the drain. In either case, the air / gas and priming liquid leak through the non-positive displacement second pump 7. The non-positive displacement second pump 7 may function as a throttle valve. In an embodiment where the second pump 7 is not operating and the priming fluid is pumped towards the first side 2a using the first pump 6, the pressure at the first side 2a does not change substantially since air creates a low flow resistance through the second pump 7. When the priming fluid reaches the second pump 7, the pressure at the first side 2a increases since the priming fluid, which creates a high flow resistance through the second pump 7, is pushed through the second pump 7. This increase in pressure may be sensed by the first pressure sensor 42a or the second pressure sensor 42b, indicating when the priming fluid has reached the second pump 7. The second pump 7 may then be controlled to start pumping to reduce the pressure at the first side 2a to the desired low pressure. The second pump 7 then operates using pressure feedback from the first pressure sensor 42a or the second pressure sensor 42b. Thus, a pressure difference may be detected depending on whether gas or fluid (liquid) is passing through the second pump 7. In embodiments where the second pump 7 is operating and priming fluid is pumped towards the first side 2a with the first pump 6, the pressure on the first side 2a will be lower than when the second pump 7 is not operating. Depending on the speed of the second pump 7, the pressure on the first side 2a will be lower than, equal to or greater than atmospheric pressure. Also, now, when the priming fluid reaches the second pump 7, the pressure on the first side 2a changes compared to when the second pump 7 is pumping air, and this change can be detected. The desired low pressure can then be established by operating the second pump 7 using pressure feedback from the first pressure sensor 42a or the second pressure sensor 42b. When the desired low pressure is established, the second pump 7 operates to maintain the lower pressure at the same value. In an embodiment where the second pump 7 is a positive displacement pump and the priming fluid is pumped towards the first side 2a using the first pump 6, the second pump 7 operates, otherwise it stops flowing and the first side 2a cannot be filled. To establish the low pressure on the first side 2a, the second pump 7 operates using pressure feedback from the first pressure sensor 42a or the second pressure sensor 42b. The second pump 7 typically operates to provide a higher flow rate than the first pump 6 for a period of time until low pressure is established. Thereafter, the second pump 7 operates to provide more or less the same flow rate as the first pump 6 to maintain the lower pressure at the same value. The low pressure is typically maintained by pressure feedback to the second pump 7. When low pressure is established, priming fluid may be recirculated in the recirculation path 12 at the low pressure established throughout the recirculation path 12.
[0076] If a low pressure on the first side 2a is undesirable and the second pump 7 is a non-positive displacement pump, the second pump 7 is controlled to reach a pressure on the first side 2a above atmospheric pressure either when or before the priming fluid reaches the second pump 7 while the priming fluid is being pumped towards the first side 2a with the first pump 6. In this case, the second pump 7 may first start pumping when the priming fluid reaches the second pump 7, which occurs, for example, when a predetermined amount of priming fluid is pumped by the first pump 6 after the gas collection chamber 5 is filled, or when an increase in the pressure on the first side 2 is detected. If the second pump 7 is a positive displacement pump, the second pump 7 is controlled to reach a pressure on the first side 2a above atmospheric pressure while the priming fluid is being pumped towards the first side 2a with the first pump 6. When a pressure on the first side 2a above atmospheric pressure is established, the priming fluid can be recirculated in the recirculation path 12 at the established above atmospheric pressure.
[0077] The second pump 7 may pump any expelled priming fluid from the first side 2a to a drain. In other words, in some embodiments, the method includes providing S1B priming fluid from a priming fluid source to the first side 2a of the FO unit 2 via the first flow path 3 and the gas collection chamber 5 to fill the first side 2a with priming fluid.
[0078] After filling the first side 2a, in some embodiments the method includes again providing S1 priming liquid to the gas collection chamber 5 while evacuating gas from the gas collection chamber 5 in order to fill the gas collection chamber 5 to a predetermined level. This measure may be performed in response to checking the level in the gas collection chamber 5 with the level sensing device 22. If the level is detected to be too low, the method includes providing S1 priming liquid to the gas collection chamber 5. Such a sequence is illustrated in FIG. 4A.
[0079] When the first side 2a is filled with the priming liquid, thus when the priming liquid reaches the second pump 7 and / or when a predetermined volume of the priming liquid is pumped by the first pump 6, and optionally when the pressure on the first side is low and the gas collection chamber 5 has a predetermined level of the priming liquid, the method includes circulating the provided priming liquid in the recirculation path 12. This is illustrated in FIGS. 4C and 4D. For example, the method includes operating the second pump 7 to circulate the priming liquid in the recirculation path 12. During circulation, in some embodiments, no new priming liquid enters the recirculation path 12. During recirculation, the gas present in the recirculation path 12 that is moved by the circulating priming liquid is collected in the gas collection chamber 5. During circulation, the return path valve 20c is open, and the first side input line valve 20b, the DC line valve 20s, the gas collection path valve 20n, and the discharge valve 20i are closed. Also, the container valve 20p may be closed. The method includes circulating the provided priming liquid in the recirculation path 12 in a first direction S2. At this time, the second pump 7 operates to provide a flow of the priming liquid in the first direction. In some embodiments, circulating the priming liquid in the first direction S2 means inputting through the inlet port E in and circulating the fluid so that it is output through the outlet port E out of the first side 2a, thus in the direction indicated by the arrow in FIG. 4C. The first direction through the first side 2a corresponds to the direction of the first fluid being generated. Circulating S2 typically includes circulating the provided priming liquid in the first direction for a predetermined period. The predetermined period is, for example, 10 to 120 seconds. As gas is collected in the gas collection chamber 5, the level of the priming liquid in the gas collection chamber 5 decreases. In some embodiments, the flow rate when circulating the priming liquid for the first time is a low flow rate, for example, 200 to 400 ml / min. In another embodiment, the flow velocity is high, for example, 400 to 1500 ml / min. However, the flow rate depends on the dimensions of the system components, the type of FO membrane, etc., and thus can vary.
[0080] In some embodiments, the method includes maintaining a low pressure on the first side 2a during the circulation of the priming fluid in the recirculation path 12. Thereby, priming can be more efficient. The low pressure may be established by operating the first pump 6 and the second pump 7 to achieve different flow rates before entering the recirculation phase.
[0081] After circulating the priming liquid for the first time, the method in some embodiments includes providing S1 priming liquid to the gas collection chamber 5 one more time while evacuating gas from the gas collection chamber 5 to fill the gas collection chamber 5 to a predetermined level. This measure may be performed in response to checking the level in the gas collection chamber 5 with the level sensing device 22. If the level is too low, the method includes providing S1 priming liquid to the gas collection chamber 5. As explained, this sequence is illustrated in FIG. 4A.
[0082] The recirculation path 12, and thus the first side 2a of the FO unit 2, is now free of gas that can be relatively easily removed. However, the first side 2a may still contain trapped gas. To remove such trapped gas, in some embodiments, the method includes circulating the priming fluid through the recirculation path 12 at a high flow rate, such as 400-1500 ml / min. Also, in some embodiments, the method includes circulating the priming fluid in the opposite direction through the recirculation path 12. Thus, the method may also include circulating the priming fluid in the second direction in the recirculation path 12 (S3). In some embodiments, circulating the priming fluid in the second direction (S3) may include circulating the priming fluid through the outlet port E (E). out and the inlet port E of the first side 2a. inIt means circulating the fluid through to be output in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 4D, which is thus opposite to the first direction. At this time, the second pump 7 operates to provide a flow of the priming liquid in the second direction. In some embodiments, the method includes circulating the priming liquid in the opposite direction at a high flow rate through the recirculation path 12. To provide different flow rates, the second pump 7 operates at different speeds. In some embodiments, the method includes circulating the priming liquid in different directions through the recirculation path 12 at both a high flow rate, for example, 400 - 1500 ml / min, and a low flow rate, for example, 50 - 200 ml / min or 200 - 400 ml / min. In some embodiments, the method includes circulating the priming liquid in the first direction at a first flow rate S2 and circulating the priming liquid in the second direction at a second flow rate S3, and the first flow rate is different from the second flow rate. In some embodiments, the first flow rate is greater than the second flow rate. Circulating in different directions may be consecutive immediately after each other or very shortly after each other. In some embodiments, the method includes circulating the priming liquid in different directions over different lengths of time. In some embodiments, the method includes circulating the priming liquid in the first direction in the recirculation path 12 for a predetermined first period S2 and circulating the priming liquid in the second direction in the recirculation path 12 for a second period S3, and the first period and the second period have different lengths. The first period is, for example, longer than the second period. Any of the above steps may be combined and / or repeated one or more times over time. In some embodiments, the method includes (i) circulating the priming liquid in the first direction in the recirculation path 12 S2 and (ii) circulating the priming liquid in the second direction in the recirculation path 12 S3 until one or more predetermined priming criteria are met. For example, in some embodiments, the method includes circulating the priming liquid in the first direction at a high flow rate for a first period. The first period is, for example, 10 - 120 seconds. This step is performed to push any gas present in the fiber lumen of the first side 2a out of the lumen due to the high pressure drop caused by the high flow rate. Thus, the high flow rate causes a high pressure drop from the inlet to the outlet on the first side 2a due to the higher flow resistance on the first side 2a. Then, the circulation is stopped. In this example, the method then includes circulating the priming fluid in the second direction at a low flow rate for a second period of time. The purpose of circulating the priming fluid in the second direction is to pump the priming fluid through the inlet port E. inThe second period should be long enough to allow the gas at the top of the first side 2a to be transported from the first side 2a to the gas collection chamber 5 together with the priming liquid. Thus, the second period depends on the length of the connecting line 3c and the magnitude of the low flow rate. For example, the second period is several seconds, for example 3 to 10 seconds. The first period is typically longer than the second period because the priming liquid of the first side 2a when circulated in the first direction has to travel a longer distance to reach the gas collection chamber 5 than the priming liquid of the first side 2a when circulated in the second direction. Thus, the length of the first period is typically at least the time it takes for the priming liquid of the first side 2a to travel to the gas collection chamber 5 via the return path 8. The procedure of circulating the priming liquid in the first direction at a high flow rate for a first period and then circulating the priming liquid in the second direction at a low flow rate for a second period may be performed multiple times. For example, the procedure may be repeated 5-10 times to ensure a gas-free first surface 2a. Thus, the criterion for stopping the repetition or cycling may be that the repetition or cycling has been performed multiple times, for example a certain number of times. In some embodiments, the device 1 comprises an air bubble sensor 44 connected to the return path 8. The method may then include detecting the presence of air bubbles, for example based on the size and / or number of air bubbles. In response to detection of an air bubble satisfying one or more low detection criteria, the repetition or cycling may be stopped and the priming of the first side may be considered satisfactory. The low detection criteria may be, for example, no air bubbles larger than a predetermined size over a predetermined period of time and / or less than a predetermined number of air bubbles larger than a predetermined size over a predetermined period of time. In some embodiments, in addition to circulating the priming liquid in a first direction at a high flow rate for a first period of time and then circulating the priming liquid in a second direction at a low flow rate for a second period of time, the method includes circulating the priming liquid in the second direction at a high flow rate through the first side 2a. Thus, more air bubbles can be removed from the fiber lumen and collected in the gas collection chamber 5. Circulating the priming liquid in the second direction at a high flow rate through the first side 2a is performed for a third period of time. The third period of time follows after the second period of time, typically immediately after the second period of time. The third period of time may have the same length as the second period of time, and is therefore between 3 and 10 seconds.
[0083] Now, the first side 2a is primed and likely free of gas, at least free of large air bubbles. This also means that one or more predefined priming criteria have been met for the first side 2a. In some embodiments, once one or more predefined priming criteria have been met, the method continues by supplying liquid from the solution source 15 via the second flow path to the outlet port L of the second side 2b. out The inlet port L to the second side 2b is located below in Alternatively, providing fluid from the solution source 15 to the second side 2b is performed before, during and / or after the priming of the first side 2a. The fluid from the solution source 15 is typically a concentrate solution provided to the second side 2b during dialysis fluid production. Thus, priming of the second side 2b may be the start of a process of diluting the concentrate. The second side 2b is filled from the bottom up as illustrated in FIG. 4E, and any gas in the second side 2b is transported to the collection chamber (reference number 16 in FIG. 5) by the diluted concentrate solution. Because the second side 2b is located along the outside (shell side) of the lumen, gas is less likely to be trapped in the second side 2b. After the second side 2b is filled, the priming of the FO unit 2 is completed. The FO unit 2 can now efficiently produce a diluted dialysis concentrate solution. In FIG. 4E it is illustrated that the feed liquid flows through the first side 2a and the draw liquid flows through the second side 2b.
[0084] The higher pressure on the first side 2a (rather than the lower pressure on the first side 2a during priming) is typically associated with a water extraction session that reduces the size of any remaining and potentially flow-impeding air bubbles. The session also reduces the risk of additional gas formation due to fluid degassing.
[0085] In addition to the above measures, in some embodiments, flow and / or pressure transients may be used to push air bubbles out of the fiber lumens at the first side 2a. Thus, the method may include providing a pulsating flow that creates a flow transient that aids in the release of air bubbles from the fiber lumens at the first side 2a. The method may then include operating the second pump 7 to provide a pulsating flow or a periodic flow pattern in the recirculation path 12 and thus while the priming fluid is being recirculated as illustrated in FIG. 4C or FIG. 4D. Alternatively or in combination, the method may include generating a built-up pressure that is periodically released to generate high flow pulses. This creates a flow transient that aids in the release of air bubbles from the fiber lumens. For example, the first pump 6 may periodically build pressure in the gas collection chamber 5 and then release it through the first side 2a of the FO unit 2.
[0086] In some embodiments, priming is enhanced by actuating the FO unit 2 for movement by external means to facilitate air removal, such as, for example, mechanically vibrating the FO unit 2.
[0087] Now, with reference to Fig. 1 and Fig. 4A-4F, one exemplary priming scenario will be described. Depending on a predetermined occasion, for example 1 pm every day, a priming sequence is initiated. The priming sequence starts by filling the gas collection chamber 5 with priming liquid to a predetermined level while gas is being exhausted through the exhaust path 9 (see steps S1-S1A and Fig. 4A). The first side 2a is then filled by providing a predetermined amount of priming liquid to the first side 2a (see step S1B and Fig. 4B). The gas collection chamber 5 is then filled again with priming liquid to a predetermined level while gas is being exhausted through the exhaust path 9 (see steps S1-S1A and Fig. 4A). The priming liquid in the recirculation path 12 is then recirculated in the recirculation path 12 in a first direction, thus in the forward direction (see step S2 and Fig. 4C). The gas collection chamber 5 is then refilled with priming liquid again to a predetermined level while the gas is exhausted through the exhaust path 9 (see steps S1-S1A and FIG. 4A). Now, the priming sequence is repeatedly performed including circulating the priming liquid in a first direction at a high flow rate for a first period of time, followed by circulating the priming liquid in a second direction at a low flow rate for a second period of time (see steps S2-S4 and FIG. 4C and FIG. 4D). The sequence may be repeated, for example, 5-10 times to ensure an air-free feed side. Then, the first side 2a is primed (see FIG. 4E). Now, concentrate liquid is provided to the second side 2b to fill it (see step S5). When the second side 2b is filled, the second side 2b is also primed and the entire FO unit 2 is considered to be primed. Thus, the first side 2a is primed and the second side 2b is empty. The second side 2b is then primed while the first side 2a is already filled, i.e. already primed. Alternatively, the second side 2b is primed before or while the first side 2a is primed.
[0088] Now, with reference to Fig. 5, an example of a device 1 for generating a fluid for dialysis is described. The legend regarding open and closed valves does not apply to Fig. 5. The device 1 comprises the part 50 described in Fig. 1 and Figs. 4A-4E, together with some additional components excluded from Fig. 1. The device 1 thus comprises a FO unit 2, a first flow path 3 and a second flow path 4. The method for priming described may be applied to the device 1 of Fig. 5 as well.
[0089] The first flow path 3 starts from the inlet connector Pi and ends at the drain 31. The second flow path 4 starts from the concentrate container 15 and ends at the outlet connector Po. The inlet connector Pi can be connected, for example, to a catheter of a PD patient or to a spent dialysate line of an HD or CRRT machine. The outlet connector Po can be connected, for example, to a catheter of a PD patient or to a dialysate line of an HD or CRRT machine. The first flow path 3 comprises a number of fluid lines, namely a first side input line 3a, a container line 3b, a connection line 3c and a discharge line 3d. The first side input line 3a is arranged between the input point Pi and a gas collection chamber 5, for example the inlet port 5a of the gas collection chamber 5, as illustrated in FIG. 2. The first side input line 3a fluidly connects the input point Pi and the inlet port 5a of the gas collection chamber 5. The container line 3b is arranged between the container 19 and the connection point P1 of the first side input line 3a. As will be explained, connection point P1 in Figures 1 and 4A-4E corresponds to connection point P1 in Figure 5. A container line 3b connects the container 19 to the first side input line 3a. A connection line 3c connects the outlet port 5b (Figure 2) of the gas collection chamber 5 to the inlet port E of the first side 2a. in Therefore, the connecting line 3c is disposed between the outlet port 5b of the gas collection chamber 5 and the inlet port E in The discharge line 3d is fluidly connected to the outlet port E of the first side 2a. out and a connection point P4 connected to the drain 31. Thus, the discharge line 3d is disposed between the outlet port E outand drain 31. A pressure sensor 26 is connected to the first side input line 3a to sense the pressure of the fluid in the first side input line 3a. The sensed pressure from the pressure sensor 26 represents the pressure in the gas collection chamber 5. A first pump 6 is arranged to operate with the container line 3b to provide a flow in the container line 3b. The first pump 6 is arranged and configured to pump fluid in a forward direction, for example to fill the container 19 with spent dialysate. The first pump 6 is also configured to pump fluid in a reverse direction, for pumping fluid from the container 19 to the gas collection chamber 5. An input valve 20a is arranged to operate with the first side input line 3a between the inlet connector Pi and point P1. A first side input line valve 20b is arranged to operate with the first side input line 3a between point P1 and the gas collection chamber 5. A second pump 7 is arranged to operate with the drain line 3d to provide a flow in the drain line 3d. The exhaust valve 20i is arranged to operate with the exhaust line 3d between the connection point of the return path 8 to the exhaust line 3d and the connection point of the gas recovery path 9 to the exhaust line 3d. The return path 8 is arranged between the exhaust line 3d and the first side input line 3a. The return path 8 thus fluidly connects the exhaust line 3d and the first side input line 3a. The return path 8 is connected to the exhaust line 3d between the second pump 7 and the exhaust valve 20i. The return path 8 is further connected to the first side input line 3a at a point between the connection point of the direct current line 3e with the first side input line 3a and the inlet port 5a of the gas collection chamber 5. The gas recovery path 9 is arranged between the gas outlet port 5c (FIG. 2) of the gas collection chamber 5 and the exhaust line 3d. The gas collection path 9 thus fluidly connects the gas outlet port 5c and the exhaust line 3d. The gas collection path 9 is connected to the exhaust line 3d between the exhaust valve 20i and a drain. The spent dialysate may be collected in the container 19 by pumping the spent dialysate to the container 19 with the first pump 6, opening the first input valve 20a and the container valve 20p, and closing the first side input line valve 20b and the direct line valve 20s.The spent dialysate can then be transported to the first side 2a by pumping with the first pump 6 and the second pump 7, opening the first side input line valve 20b, the container valve 20p and the drain valve 20i, and closing the inlet valve 20a, the direct line valve 20s, the return path valve 20c and the gas collection path valve 20n. The gas collection chamber 5 may be filled by additionally opening the gas collection path valve 20n and not operating the second pump 7 or operating it at a lower flow rate than the first pump 6. The first side 2a may be filled by additionally closing the gas collection path valve 20n.
[0090] The second flow path 4 comprises a number of fluid lines, namely a concentrate line 4d, a second side input line 4b, a second side output line 4c, a first diluted concentrate line 4e, a second diluted concentrate line 4a, a main line 4f, a pure water line 4g, a second concentrate line 4h, and a drain connection line 4i. The concentrate line 4d is disposed between the concentrate container 15 and a connection point P3 between the main line 4f and the second side input line 4b. Thus, the concentrate line 4d connects the concentrate container 15 to the second side input line 4b (and the main line 4f). As will be explained, the connection point P3 in Fig. 1 and Figs. 4A-4E corresponds to the connection point P3 in Fig. 5. A concentrate valve 20d is connected to the concentrate line 4d. The second side input line 4b is connected to the connection point P3 between the concentrate line 4d and the inlet port L of the second side 2b. in Therefore, the second side input line 4b is disposed between the connection point P3 and the inlet port L in The concentrate pump 10 is arranged and configured to provide flow in the concentrate line 4d. A second side input valve 20h is connected to the second side input line 4b. The second side output line 4c is connected to the outlet port L of the second side 2b. out 5. The second side output line 4c is disposed between the outlet port L and the connection point P2 on the first dilute concentrate line 4e. As will be explained, the connection point P2 in FIG. 1 and FIG. 4A-FIG. 4E corresponds to the connection point P2 in FIG. 5. Thus, the second side output line 4c is disposed between the outlet port L and the connection point P2 on the first dilute concentrate line 4e. outand the first diluted concentrate line 4e. The first diluted concentrate liquid line 4e is arranged between the inlet of the diluent container 16 and the connection point P3 of the concentrate line 4d. Thus, the first diluted concentrate liquid line 4e connects the inlet of the diluent container 16 and the connection point P3 of the concentrate line 4d. The first diluted concentrate valve 20e is connected to the first diluted concentrate line 4e between the connection point P2 of the second side output line 4c to the first diluted concentrate line 4e and the connection point of the first diluted concentrate line 4e to the concentrate line 4d. A conductivity sensor 11 is connected to the first diluted concentrate line 4e between the point P2 and the inlet of the diluent container 16. The main line 4f is arranged between the connection point P3 with the concentrate line 4d and the outlet connector Po. Thus, the main line 4f connects the connection point P3 and the outlet connector Po. The second diluted concentrate liquid line 4a is arranged between the outlet of the diluent container 16 and the connection point P3 with the main line 4f. A second diluted concentrate valve 20f is connected to the second diluted concentrate side input line 4a. Thus, the connection point P3 connects the main line 4f, the concentrate line 4d, the second diluted concentrate line 4a, and the second side input line 4b. The second flow path 4 further comprises a number of components connected to the main line 4f, namely, the main valve 20g, the heating element 65, the temperature sensor 27, the main pump 23, the mixing chamber 24, the conductivity sensor 25, and the outlet valve 20j. A pure water line 4g is arranged between the pure water container 17 and the main line 4f. Thus, the pure water line 4g connects the pure water container 17 and the main line 4f. The main valve 20g is connected to the main line 4f between the point P3 and the connection point of the pure water line 4g with the main line 4f. A second concentrate line 4h is disposed between the second concentrate container 18 and the main line 4f. The second concentrate line 4h thus connects the second concentrate container 18 and the main line 4f. The second concentrate pump 29 is positioned and configured to provide a flow of the second concentrate in the second concentrate line 4h. The main pump 23 is positioned and configured to provide a flow to the main line 4f downstream of the connection of the pure water line 4g to the main line 4f and downstream of the connection of the second concentrate line 4h to the main line 4f.A temperature sensor 27 is positioned and configured to sense the temperature of the fluid in the main line 4f upstream of the main pump 23 but downstream of the connection of the second concentrate line 4h to the main line 4f. The mixing chamber 24 is positioned downstream of the main pump 23 and upstream of the main conductivity sensor 25. An exhaust valve 20m is positioned in operation with an exhaust line 4j connected between the mixing chamber 24 and the exhaust line 3d. The exhaust line 4j transports excess gas in the mixing chamber 24 to a drain 31.
[0091] To dilute the concentrate, the concentrate pump 10 operates to pump the concentrate solution from the concentrate container 15 to the second side 2b. At this time, the concentrate valve 20d and the second side input valve 20h are opened, and the first diluted concentrate valve 20e and the second diluted concentrate valve 20f are closed. At the same time, the spent dialysate is provided to the first side 2a. Then, due to the osmotic pressure difference, pure water is extracted from the spent dialysate on the first side 2a to the concentrate solution on the second side 2b. Thus, the concentrate solution becomes diluted to form an intermediate dialysis solution and thus a diluted concentrate solution, which is collected in the diluent container 16. This procedure may be called a FO session. After the diluted concentrate is collected in the diluent container 16, it may be circulated in the first diluted concentrate line 4e, a portion of the concentrate line 4d, the second diluted concentrate line 4a and the diluent container 16 by pumping with the concentrate pump 10, opening the first diluted concentrate valve 20e and the second diluted concentrate valve 20f, and closing the second side input valve 20h, the concentrate valve 20d and the main valve 20g. The conductivity sensor 11 measures the conductivity of the diluent concentrate being circulated to monitor when the conductivity is stable and therefore the diluent concentrate is homogenous.
[0092] To mix the dialysate, the dilute concentrate solution in the diluent container 16 is pumped into the main line 4f by operating the concentrate pump 10, opening the first dilute concentrate valve 20e, the main valve 20g, the outlet valve 20j, and closing the concentrate valve 20d, the second side input valve 20h, the second dilute concentrate valve 20f, and the drain connection valve 20k. At the same time, a second concentrate solution, such as glucose, is passed through the main line 4f by operating the second concentrate solution pump 29. Pure water flows from the pure water container 17 into the main line 4f. The main pump 23 provides a desired flow rate of the resulting dialysate into the main line 4f downstream of the main pump 23. The conductivity sensor 25 measures the conductivity of the resulting dialysate from the main pump 23. The concentrate pump 10 is controlled at a specific speed to achieve a desired predetermined concentration of the resulting dialysate based on the conductivity of the produced fluid, the conductivity of the dilute concentrate solution, and the flow rate of the produced fluid. The second concentrate solution pump 29 is controlled to a specific speed based on the flow rate of the produced fluid to achieve a specific composition of concentrate in the produced fluid. In the mixing chamber 24, the dilute concentrate solution, the second concentrate solution, and pure water are mixed to produce the dialysate. The mixing chamber 24 is small and may typically contain only 30-100 ml of fluid. The dialysate is then delivered at the outlet connector Po to the desired destination (e.g., a storage container or a dialysis machine, or a catheter connected to a PD patient). A level sensing device 66 monitors the level in the mixing chamber 24, and if the level is too low in response to passing gas to the drain, an exhaust valve 20m is opened, thereby raising the level. A main conductivity sensor 25 measures the conductivity of the final dialysate. If the conductivity is not within predetermined limits, the dialysate is passed to the drain 31 via the drain connection line 4i. Connected to the drain connection line 4i is a drain connection valve 20k that opens when the dialysate is passed to the drain 31. A pressure sensor 28 is connected to the main line 4f downstream of the output valve 20j for sensing the pressure at the outlet connector Po.
[0093] Any of the pumps described herein may be positive displacement pumps (such as piston pumps) or non-positive displacement pumps (e.g., gear pumps) that operate, for example, with flow rate feedback from a flow sensor (not shown). One or more of the pumps may be unidirectional or bidirectional. The concentrate container 15 contains an electrolyte solution. For example, the electrolyte solution may include electrolytes and buffers, such as Na, Ca, Mg, and lactate. The second concentrate container 18 contains, for example, a glucose concentrate. The controller 30 further comprises a control unit 30 including at least one memory and at least one processor. The controller 60 is configured to control the pumps 6, 7, 10, 23, and 29, as well as the valves 20a-20p of the valve arrangement 20, to perform a number of different processes, such as generating dialysate or performing a priming process. The controller 60 is also configured to receive conductivity measurements from the conductivity sensors 11, 25. The controller 60 is further configured to receive pressure measurements from the pressure sensors 26, 28, and the temperature sensor 27. Thus, the controller 60 is configured to receive or collect any signals or data from the components of the device 1 and control the pumps and / or valves based thereon. The results may be provided to a user via a user interface (not shown).
