Description

[Technical field]

[0001] The present invention relates to a retention device for holding one or more cables. Such a retention device generally holds the cable in place and is usually used with the transit of the cable through a partition, for example a floor or roof of a building or other type of partition, where the cable is routed from one side of the partition to the other, for example between floors, from inside the building to the roof. For example, such a retention device can be used to hold a cable that is routed from inside the building to the roof. Such a retention device can also be used to hold a cable in other locations, for example in a cabinet, duct, shaft or other suitable location. The present invention also relates to a retention system and a retention method for holding one or more cables. The present invention also relates to the use of such a system. [Background technology]

[0002] Installing cable transits on rooftops and other locations can be difficult. It is usually desirable to provide a suitable seal around the cable to keep it in place and organized. Furthermore, it is desirable to simplify the installation process for the operator. A problem with prior art means is that the cable usually needs to be transitioned to another cable or a smaller, more flexible cable before it can be connected to other equipment in various types of systems. Another problem arises when the cable needs to be changed. Thus, there is room for improvement with respect to prior art devices and systems for holding cables and installing cable transits on rooftops and the like. Summary of the Invention [Problem to be solved by the invention]

[0003] The object of the present invention is to provide a novel retaining device and system which is an improvement over the prior art. This object is achieved by the technique set out in the attached independent claims and by preferred embodiments defined in the associated dependent claims. [Means for solving the problem]

[0004] According to one aspect, there is provided a retention device for retaining one or more cables, the retention device comprising a support bracket having at least one end piece with a recess, a back piece, a locking device configured to move through the recess of the support bracket to cooperate with the back piece, and at least one compressible module having a through opening configured to receive one or more cables, the at least one compressible module being disposed between the support bracket and the back piece, the locking device configured to lock the end piece of the support bracket to the back piece and compress the at least one compressible module around the one or more cables. The retention device according to the invention provides a safe, organized and secure retention of the cables while allowing easy and efficient installation of the cables. The configuration of the support bracket having an end piece with a recess cooperating with the locking device allows a user to easily compress the compressible module to hold the cable in place and lock the support bracket to the back piece with the locking device. The retention device retains the weight of the cable and supports its load. For example, the retention device may support the weight of one or more cables that extend at least partially vertically (e.g., below the compressible module) and may reduce or minimize vibrations in both axial and radial directions along the cables, which are absorbed by the compressible module that holds the cables within the retention device.

[0005] The locking device may be a cam lever locking device, which allows the support bracket to be quickly and easily urged towards the backpiece while simultaneously compressing the compressible module. Alternatively, the locking device may be a screw or bolt having a head for urging the support bracket towards the backpiece when tightened. Thus, tightening of the locking device can be easily performed using a tool, such as a power tool, to ensure a secure tightening.

[0006] The support bracket may have a first end piece and a second end piece, each of which is provided with a recess, the first end piece having a first recess and the second end piece having a second recess. The end pieces may be arranged at both ends of the support bracket and may extend radially outward, and the cable(s) passing through the compressible module may extend axially, e.g., vertically. For example, the end pieces are plates or plate parts extending in a vertical plane, and the recesses extend upward from the lower edge and are accessible from the bottom to receive the locking device. The retaining device may also include a first locking device connected to the back piece and cooperating with the first end piece of the support bracket via the first recess, and a second locking device connected to the back piece and cooperating with the second end piece of the support bracket via the second recess to compress the compressible module while pushing the support bracket towards the back piece and locking the support bracket to the back piece. Thus, the retaining device may include two locking devices. For example, the locking devices are fastened to the back piece and the support bracket can slide over the locking devices from above so that the locking devices are received in the recesses. The two locking devices may be screws with heads, which are accessible by a tool for tightening them. Alternatively, at least one of the locking devices is a cam lever locking device that is tightened manually.

[0007] The retaining device may be arranged with an elongated opening extending between two end pieces of the support bracket, such that the support bracket may be arranged to receive multiple compressible modules arranged side by side in a horizontal plane, for example, such that the retaining device can receive multiple cables in parallel.

[0008] The support bracket may have a bottom lip disposed thereon that is configured to support the compressible module disposed between the support bracket and the backpiece, such that the compressible module is held in place during installation and prior to being clamped and locked by the locking device.

[0009] The compressible module may have through openings for a single cable or multiple cables and may be formed of module halves, each module half having a groove facing the groove of the other module half, which grooves form the through openings, in which a peelable material layer may be placed such that the through openings match the dimensions of the cables, e.g., the diameter of the cables.

[0010] According to a second aspect, there is provided a retention system for retaining one or more cables. The retention system comprises a tubular body and at least one retention device, the tubular body comprising at least one removable panel for accessing the retention device. The retention system may be configured to be mounted on a surface such as a floor or rooftop and may comprise a curved tubular element, commonly used as a transit for cables on rooftops and also known as a swan-neck frame or simply a swan-neck. Alternatively, the retention system may be mounted in a cabinet, duct, or shaft such as an elevator hoistway or tunnel, with or without a swan-neck, or in any other suitable location. For example, the retention system is used to retain one or more cables that extend at least partially in a vertical direction. The retention system allows for efficient installation and retention of the cables. Also, a secure and efficient cable retention can be achieved for cables routed from inside a building to the rooftop. Providing a cable retention device and system according to the present invention simplifies installation, for example because there is no need to transition the cable to a smaller, more flexible cable in order to connect it to other equipment. The retention system may include a conventional swan neck, which may be provided with the necessary sealing modules to seal around the associated cable.

[0011] The retention system may include multiple retention devices, for example at least one first retention device and one second retention device, which may be displaced both axially and radially relative to one another. For example, the second retention device may be displaced both vertically and horizontally relative to the first retention device. For example, the second retention device may be located below the first retention device and closer to the removable panel. Thus, by first installing the first retention device and then installing the second retention device, the cable of the second retention device is retracted in front of and parallel to the cable of the first retention device.

[0012] According to a third aspect, there is provided a method for retaining one or more cables, the method comprising: Providing a retention system including a tubular body and at least one retention device disposed within the tubular body; attaching a first end of the tubular body to a surface; placing the cable through an opening in the compressible module; placing the compressible module with the cable disposed thereon into a support bracket of the retention device; fastening the support bracket with the compressible module disposed thereon to a back piece of the retention device with a locking device, thereby compressing the compressible module around the cable therein; and attaching a curved tubular element to the second end of the tubular body. Effect of the Invention

[0013] Further features and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description of embodiments, the accompanying drawings and the dependent claims. [Brief description of the drawings]

[0014] Embodiments of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:

[0016] As shown in Figures 1-3, a retention system 200 is shown. The retention system 200 has a tubular body 210 formed with side walls 240, 250, a front wall 260, and a rear wall 270. The walls are substantially rectangular, but may be other shapes. Furthermore, the walls 240, 250, 260, 270 may be removably attached to each other or may be integral with each other to form the tubular body 210. A first end flange 220 and a second end flange 230 are disposed at the ends of the tubular body 210, respectively. For example, the tubular body 210 is rectangular.

[0017] The end flanges 220, 230 may be removably attached to the tubular body 210 or may be integral to the tubular body 210. The end flanges 220, 230 resemble frames in that they each have a rectangular opening 221 corresponding to an opening in the tubular body 210. The end flanges 220, 230 surround the periphery of the opening in the tubular body 210. For example, the end flanges 220, 230 extend continuously along the periphery of said opening. The opening in the tubular body and the opening in the end flanges do not have to have the same dimensions. The end flanges 220, 230 have holes 232 configured to receive fastening means 223 that can fasten the retention system 200, for example, to a curved tubular element 300 (shown in dashed lines in FIG. 1), often also called a swan neck frame or simply swan neck, and to the roof of a building or other surface (not shown). 1, four holes 232 where no fastening means are present are visible in the bottom end flange 230. In the top end flange 220, the holes are covered by fastening means 223. It should be noted that the retention system can be fastened to the target object or surface in a variety of ways. For example, the fastening means 223 of the end flanges 220, 230 can be screws, bolts, adhesives, welded joints, etc.

[0018] In Figs. 1-3, the front wall 260 has an opening (opening 261 shown in Fig. 4) covered by a removable panel 262. The removable panel 262 is a location for providing access to the interior of the retention system 200. For example, the removable panel is also provided to keep the interior of the removable panel away from dust, water, contaminants or other things that may adversely affect the cables in the retention system 200. For example, the removable panel 262 may be hinged to the tubular body 210. The opening in the wall is surrounded by holes (not shown) for attaching the removable panel to the wall. Fastening means 264 are provided for attaching the removable panel 262 to the wall 260. The fastening means 264 of the removable panel may be, for example, a screw or other mechanical fastening element. For example, at least one of the side walls 240, 250 has an opening covered by a removable panel that provides access to the interior of the tubular body 210. Thus, the front wall 260 and at least one of the side walls 240 , 250 have removable panels that provide access to the interior of the support system 200 .

[0019] A curved tubular element 300, i.e., a swan neck, is shown in Figs. 1-3 (in dashed lines in Figs. 1 and 3) to illustrate the purpose of the retention system 200, which is to provide a transit for one or more cables to pass through a rooftop or other partition. The swan neck 300 is a hollow element that passes through the tubular body 210 of the retention system 200 and provides a passage for a cable or pipe to be held therein. A portion of the curved tubular element, such as an end, is provided with a space configured to receive a number of compressible modules, such as for sealing around the cables. The retention system 200 serves as an extension between the rooftop of the building and the swan neck 300. As seen in Figs. 1-3, the swan neck is attached to the upper end flange 220 of the retention system 200. In one embodiment, the swan neck 300 is included in the retention system.

[0020] On the side wall 250 of the tubular body 210, an external grounding lug 251, for example a first external grounding lug 251, is provided for tying the support system 200 to the ground of the building.

[0021] The same retention system 200 described with respect to Figure 1 is shown in side and front views, respectively, in Figures 2 and 3. In Figure 3, another external grounding lug 241 is provided, such as a second external grounding lug 241, configured to tie the retention system 200 to the building ground.

[0022] In Fig. 4, a part of the retention system 200 described with respect to Figs. 1-3 is shown in a perspective view. Here, the upper end flange 220 is provided with a gasket 281. For example, the gasket 281 comprises a sealing material, an expandable material, an adhesive material and / or a conductive material. For example, the gasket 281 is a conductive gasket. For example, the gasket 281 is arranged to provide RF shielding, EMI shielding, grounding or bonding. For example, the gasket is self-adhesive. In the illustrated embodiment, the gasket 281 is arranged on a self-adhesive element 280 on the upper side of the end flange 220 facing the part extending from the roof, such as the curved tubular element 300. The fastening means 223 pass through holes (not shown) provided both in the sealing material and in the end flange 220. In practice, these fastening means 223 pass through the corresponding end flange of the swan neck mentioned above (shown by dashed lines in Fig. 1). Holes 232 are provided for attaching the lower end flange 230 to the roof of a building. For example, a gasket 282 similar to gasket 281 described above is placed between the end flange 230 and the rooftop, such as a self-adhesive element 280.

[0023] The interior of the tubular body 210 is exposed through an opening 261 in the front wall 260. A number of fastening means 264 pass through holes (not shown) in both the front wall 260 and the gasket 283 surrounding the opening 261 in the front wall 260. As seen through the opening 261 in the front wall 260 in FIG. 4, two retention devices 100 are attached to the interior of the tubular body 210. In practice, one or more retention devices 100 may be placed in the retention system 200 at the same time. These retention devices 100 are described in detail with reference to FIGS. 6 and 7 below. The purpose of the retention devices is to hold one or more cables in place that pass through the retention system 200, while providing a way to facilitate installation of and access to the cables, if necessary. The removable panel 262 of the front wall 260 and / or the side walls 240, 250 are removable to allow easy access to the interior of the tubular body 210.

[0024] Additionally, an internal ground lug 252 is attached to the inside of the sidewall 250 of the tubular body 210 to tie the support system 200 to the building ground.

[0025] A removable mounting plate 272 is disposed on the rear wall 270 of the tubular body 210 shown in Figure 4. The mounting plate 272 is fastened via fastening means 274, only two of which are shown in Figure 4. In practice, there may be more than two fastening means 274 to hold the mounting plate 272 in place. Optionally, the rear wall 270 does not have a mounting plate 272. For example, the mounting plate 272 is spaced apart from the rear wall 270, as shown in Figure 10. In one embodiment, the mounting plate 272 is not electrically insulating.

[0026] In FIG. 5, the same features are shown as those described with respect to FIG. 4, except that the front wall 260 and the side wall 240 are removed. This is to further illustrate how the inside of the tubular body 210 looks. As can be seen, the retention device 100 is attached to the rear wall 270 via mounting brackets 290, 291. The mounting brackets 290, 291 have different sizes to provide space for the cables when attaching them to their respective retention devices 100. In FIGS. 4 and 5, the mounting brackets 290, 291 are attached to the rear wall 270 and are spaced and offset from each other along the longitudinal direction of the tubular body 210, which is the same as the longitudinal direction of the walls of the tubular body. Optionally, the mounting brackets are attached to the side walls 240, 250 of the tubular body 210, and the retention device 100 is configured to be attached to the mounting brackets. The mounting brackets 290, 291 may be fixedly or removably attached to the associated walls. Thus, in the illustrated embodiment, the retention system 200 includes a first retention device and a second retention device 100, one positioned below the other and one positioned closer to the front wall and its removable panel than the other.

[0027] With reference to Figures 6 and 7, the retaining device 100 previously shown in Figures 4 and 5 is shown in perspective views from below and above, respectively. The retaining device 100 comprises a support bracket 110 having two end pieces 111, 112. Each of the end pieces of the support bracket 110 has a corresponding recess 113, 114, in which the locking devices 121, 122 move or slide. The retaining device 100 further comprises a back piece 120. When mounted, the support bracket 110 is pressed against the back piece 120 by the locking devices 121, 122. For example, the locking devices 121, 122 are cam lever locking devices. However, other types of locking devices can be used as well, as long as the support bracket 110 can be clamped or pressed against the back piece 120 to lock it in a clamped position. Alternatively, the locking devices 121, 122 can be screws or bolts for clamping the support bracket 110 to the back piece 120. For example, the support bracket 110 may include a first plate portion connected at each end to a side plate portion extending perpendicular to the first plate portion, the side plate portions being connected to end pieces 111, 112, the end pieces extending parallel to the first plate portion. The end pieces thus extend in a plane parallel to the plane of the first plate portion, and the side plate portions extend between the first plate portion and the end pieces 111, 112. Alternatively, the support bracket 110 may include a single end piece 111 cooperating with a single locking device 121 (which may rotate between a position where it runs through a recess and a position where it cooperating with the end piece), the opposite end being attached to the back piece 120 by a hinge (which may include a spigot that slides up and down within the casing) or the like.

[0028] The retention device 100 is configured to hold at least one cable or pipe. That can be achieved by holding one or more compressible modules 130. Preferably, the retention device 100 is arranged to hold a plurality of modules. In both Figs. 6 and 7, a plurality of compressible modules 130 are arranged along the length of the retention device 100. The module 130 is formed of two module halves 131, 132, each module half having a groove, e.g. a semi-cylindrical groove, on one side thereof. A plurality of peelable layers 140, 141, 142, 143 etc. are arranged one on top of the other in said grooves. The peelable layers 140, 141, 142, 143 etc. are arranged to be removed in order for the inner diameter of the module 130 to match the outer diameter of the cable, wire or pipe to be received in the module 130.

[0029] During the mounting of the compressible module 130 to the holding device 100, the two module halves 131, 132 are assembled with their respective grooves facing each other. Together, the module halves 131, 132 form the module 130 with a central through opening 150, through which a cable or pipe is received. For example, the opening is cylindrical. Thus, when the module 130 receives a cable or pipe, the layers 140, 141, 142, 143, etc. are peeled off as necessary. When the pipe and / or cable, respectively, are placed in the module 130, the support bracket 110 and the back piece 120, which together surround the module 130 as seen from Figs. 6 and 7, are clamped against each other by the locking devices 121, 122. Due to the clamping of the locking devices 121, 122, the compressible module 130 is compressed in one direction in the holding device 100, but expands in the other direction between the support bracket 110 and the back piece 120. Generally speaking, tightening of the locking devices 121, 122 causes the module 130 to be compressed against the retention device 100 and the cable or wire or pipe. For example, the compressible module 130 is made of rubber or a compressible plastic material.

[0030] As can be seen particularly in FIG. 6 , the support bracket 110 has a bottom lip 115 configured to hold the compressible module 130 in place. This allows an operator or user attaching the module 130 to the support bracket 110 to not have to worry about the module being inserted too deeply into the elongated opening of the support bracket 110 or falling out of said opening. For example, the bottom lip 115 is dimensioned to allow a maximum diameter cable or pipe to pass through the compressible module 130 without interfering with the bottom lip 115. For example, the bottom lip 115 extends radially, e.g., in a horizontal plane. Thus, the bottom lip 115 is positioned to support the bottom of the compressible module(s) 130. For example, the bottom lip 115 extends along the inner lower edge of the support bracket 110, e.g., extends continuously along the entire inner lower edge of the support bracket 110.

[0031] With reference to figures 8 and 9, a different embodiment of a curved tubular element 300, namely a swan neck, is described. The swan neck 300 is a penetration for one or more cables as described above. The swan neck 300 has at least one inlet opening 310 for receiving a cable. The inlet opening 310 is arranged for receiving a sealing module, which may for example be similar to the compressible module 130 described above. At a first end, for example the upper end, the inlet opening 310 of the swan neck 300 comprises a frame 320, for example a substantially rectangular frame, for receiving a plurality of compressible modules and a compression unit, such as a conventional compression unit of wedge-shaped or similar form, and optionally comprising stay plates arranged between the compressible modules or rows thereof. In the embodiment of figure 8, the swan neck 300 has a single frame 320 for receiving a cable. Alternatively, the swan neck 300 is provided with a plurality of opening frames, for example two, three or more frames 320. In the embodiment of FIG. 9, the swan neck 300 includes first and second frames 320a, 320b arranged side by side for receiving a seal module having cables arranged therein, as described above.

[0032] The swan neck 300 is arranged for attachment to the tubular body 210 as described above. In the illustrated embodiment, the swan neck 300 includes an end flange 330 at a second end, which is a lower end and opposite the first end having the frame 320. The end flange 330 is arranged for attachment to the first end flange 220 of the tubular body 210, for example, by screws passing through holes 340 or by other fastening devices. Optionally, a gasket 281 is disposed between the end flange 330 of the swan neck 300 and the first end flange 220 of the tubular body 210.

[0033] The swan neck 300 curves between the first and second ends, with the first top end and the second bottom end being disposed in different planes. Thus, the swan neck 300 curves between the end flange 330 and the frame 320. For example, the swan neck 300 curves at least 45 degrees, at least 60 degrees, or approximately 90 degrees such that the plane of the first end and the plane of the second end are perpendicular to each other. For example, the second bottom plane and the end flange 330 extend in a substantially horizontal direction. A cable disposed within the entrance opening 310 generally follows the curve of the swan neck 300, which efficiently supports the load of the cable entering through the compressible module within the frame 320. It has been found that the load-bearing properties of the swan neck 300 in combination with the retention device 100 described above provide an efficient and reliable retention system for the cable.

[0034] As shown in Fig. 10, similar parts to the retention system 200 described with respect to Fig. 4 are shown in another embodiment. Like numbers refer to like elements. In Fig. 10, a mounting plate 272 is attached to a rear wall 270 by at least one fastening means 274', e.g., a screw or similar removable fastening means. The mounting plate 272 is spaced from the rear wall 270, e.g., by a spacer element, to form a space between the rear wall 270 and the mounting plate 272. The space is arranged, e.g., to accommodate cables, connections, etc.

[0035] In the embodiment of FIG. 10, a screw may be used as the locking device 122' for fastening the support bracket 110 to the back piece 120 (see FIGS. 6 and 7) of the retaining device 100. Thus, instead of the cam lever locking devices 121, 122 shown in FIGS. 4-7, the locking device 122' of FIG. 10 is a screw for fastening the support bracket 110 to the back piece 120 (see FIGS. 6 and 7). The locking device 122' may be fastened by a tool, such as a power tool, for rotating the threads of the locking device 122' into a corresponding opening in the back piece 120. For example, the locking device 122' includes a head, such as a conventional polygonal bolt head, that is locked and operated by said tool in a conventional manner. For example, the locking device 122' is accessible through the front opening 261 by the tool, so that it can be fastened and untightened through the front opening 261 by the tool.

[0036] In the illustrated embodiment, a removable or destructible guard 242, such as a mesh or the like, is placed at the bottom of the retention system 200 to prevent parts or debris from unintentionally falling into the retention system 200 during installation or assembly. For example, the guard 242 can be cut before the cables are pulled through the retention system 200.
