AI Technical Summary
Existing wireless communication systems face challenges in accurately compensating for transmission nonlinearities caused by power amplifiers, leading to inefficiencies in signal demodulation and reduced communication capacity.
The implementation of improved demodulation reference signals that adjust the peak-to-average power ratio of pilot resource elements to enhance digital post-distortion techniques, allowing for more accurate compensation of transmission nonlinearities and improved signal demodulation.
This approach enables more efficient communication by reducing the probability of power amplifier mismatch and increasing the range and reliability of wireless communication systems.

Abstract
Description
[Technical field]
[0001] cross reference This patent application claims the benefit of U.S. patent application Ser. No. 17 / 319,388, entitled “ENHANCED DEMODULATION REFERENCE SIGNAL FOR DIGITAL POST DISTORTION ASSIST” by KUTZ et al., filed May 13, 2021, and assigned to the assignee of this application.
[0002] The following relates to wireless communications, including an enhanced demodulation reference signal for digital post-distortion assistance. [Background technology]
[0003] Wireless communication systems are widely deployed to provide various types of communication content, such as voice, video, packet data, messaging, broadcasts, and the like. These systems may be capable of supporting communication with multiple users by sharing available system resources (e.g., time, frequency, and power). Examples of such multiple access systems include fourth generation (4G) systems, such as Long Term Evolution (LTE), LTE-Advanced (LTE-A), or LTE-A Pro systems, and fifth generation (5G) systems, sometimes referred to as New Radio (NR) systems. These systems may employ technologies such as code division multiple access (CDMA), time division multiple access (TDMA), frequency division multiple access (FDMA), orthogonal FDMA (OFDMA), or discrete Fourier transform spread orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DFT-S-OFDM), etc. A wireless multiple-access communication system may include one or more base stations or one or more network access nodes, each simultaneously supporting communication for multiple communication devices, which may be known as user equipment (UE), in some cases. Summary of the Invention [Means for solving the problem]
[0004] The described techniques relate to improved methods, systems, devices, and apparatuses that support improved demodulation reference signals for digital post-distortion assistance. In general, the described techniques enable a first wireless device (e.g., a base station or user equipment (UE)) to adjust (e.g., minimize or reduce to meet a threshold) a peak-to-average power ratio associated with a set of resource elements (e.g., a set of resource elements in a symbol period). For example, the first wireless device may identify a set of constellation points that may be mapped to a resource element or set of resource elements that includes a demodulation reference signal. The first wireless device may determine a 1st percentile peak value associated with each constellation point of the set of constellation points and may select a constellation point from the set whose 1st percentile peak value meets (e.g., is below, above) a threshold or has the lowest or highest 1st percentile peak value. The first wireless device may determine a sequence for the demodulation reference signal based on the selected constellation point and may transmit the demodulation reference signal to the second wireless device based on the determined sequence.
[0005] A method for wireless communication in a first wireless device is described. The method may include identifying a set of data resource elements for transmitting data in one or more symbol periods, generating, for one or more symbol periods based on the set of data resource elements, a sequence of a set of pilot resource elements associated with the set of data resource elements, where the sequence of the set of pilot resource elements includes a demodulation reference signal, and transmitting the set of data resource elements and the set of pilot resource elements associated with the set of data resource elements to a second wireless device in the one or more symbol periods.
[0006] An apparatus for wireless communication in a first wireless device is described. The apparatus may include a processor, a memory coupled to the processor, and instructions stored in the memory. The instructions may be executable by the processor to cause the apparatus to identify a set of data resource elements for transmitting data in one or more symbol periods, generate, for one or more symbol periods based at least in part on the set of data resource elements, a sequence of a set of pilot resource elements associated with the set of data resource elements, where the sequence of the set of pilot resource elements includes a demodulation reference signal, and transmit the set of data resource elements and the set of pilot resource elements associated with the set of data resource elements to a second wireless device in the one or more symbol periods.
[0007] Another apparatus for wireless communication in a first wireless device is described. The apparatus may include means for identifying a set of data resource elements for transmitting data in one or more symbol periods, means for generating, for one or more symbol periods based on the set of data resource elements, a sequence of a set of pilot resource elements associated with the set of data resource elements, the sequence of the set of pilot resource elements including a demodulation reference signal, and means for transmitting the set of data resource elements and the set of pilot resource elements associated with the set of data resource elements to a second wireless device in the one or more symbol periods.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
[0038] A transmitting device may communicate with a receiving device. For example, the transmitting device may transmit a signal including a set of pilot resource elements (e.g., pilot symbols) and a set of data resource elements (e.g., data symbols) to the receiving device. The set of pilot resource elements may include a demodulation reference signal (DMRS). In such an example, the set of pilot resource elements may be referred to as a DMRS resource element (e.g., a DMRS symbol). The set of data resource elements may include data that the transmitting device is communicating to the receiving device.
[0039] In some examples, a receiving device may perform digital post distortion (DPOD), which may be a technique that allows the receiving device to compensate for transmission nonlinearities caused by a power amplifier (PA) of the transmitting device when the receiving device receives a transmission from the transmitting device. Performing DPOD may include the receiving device estimating a PA nonlinearity model using a set of DMRS resource elements (e.g., using an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) symbol that includes the DMRS resource elements) and the receiving device using the estimated PA nonlinearity model to apply the model to a set of data resource elements and / or phase tracking reference signal (PTRS) resource elements (e.g., to OFDM symbols that do not include DMRS resource elements). The closer a nonlinearity associated with a set of DMRS resource elements (e.g., or symbols that include DMRS resource elements) is to a nonlinearity associated with a set of data resource elements and / or a set of PTRS resource elements (e.g., or symbols that do not include DMRS resource elements), the more accurately the receiving device may be able to compensate for transmission nonlinearities, e.g., as part of a DPoD procedure.
[0040] This disclosure describes techniques that may enable a transmitting device to adjust a 1st percentile peak value associated with an OFDM symbol that includes a pilot resource element (e.g., a set of DMRS resource elements) such that the nonlinearity associated with the OFDM symbol more closely resembles the nonlinearity associated with an OFDM symbol that does not include a DMRS resource element (e.g., a symbol that includes a PTRS resource element or a data resource element). For example, for a pilot resource element of a set of pilot resource elements in an OFDM symbol, the transmitting device may identify a set of constellation points that may be mapped to the pilot resource element. The transmitting device may determine a 1st percentile peak value associated with modulating the DMRS resource element according to one or more of the constellation points and may select a constellation point associated with a 1st percentile peak value above a threshold or the highest (e.g., maximum) 1st percentile peak value for one or more constellation points. The transmitting device may modulate the pilot resource element according to the selected constellation point. By selecting a 1st percentile peak above a threshold or the highest 1st percentile peak value for a pilot resource element, the pilot resource element may have a higher 1st percentile peak value compared to the set of data resource elements, and the OFDM symbol including the DMRS resource element may be associated with a higher 1st percentile peak. Thus, the transmitting device may adjust the 1st percentile peak value of the OFDM symbol including the pilot resource element, thus enabling the receiving device to more accurately compensate for transmission nonlinearities.
[0041] Aspects of the present disclosure are first described in the context of a wireless communication system. Additional aspects of the present disclosure are described in the context of communication block diagrams and process flows. Aspects of the present disclosure are further shown and described with reference to apparatus diagrams, system diagrams, and flow charts relating to an improved demodulation reference signal for digital post-distortion assistance.
[0042] FIG. 1 illustrates an example of a wireless communication system 100 supporting an improved demodulation reference signal for digital post-distortion assistance according to an aspect of the disclosure. The wireless communication system 100 may include one or more base stations 105, one or more UEs 115, and a core network 130. In some examples, the wireless communication system 100 may be a Long Term Evolution (LTE) network, an LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) network, an LTE-A Pro network, or a New Radio (NR) network. In some examples, the wireless communication system 100 may support enhanced broadband communications, ultra-reliable (e.g., mission-critical) communications, low latency communications, communications with low-cost and low-complexity devices, or any combination thereof.
[0043] The base stations 105 may be dispersed throughout a geographic area to form the wireless communication system 100 and may be devices of different forms or with different capabilities. The base stations 105 and the UEs 115 may communicate wirelessly via one or more communication links 125. Each base station 105 may provide a coverage area 110 over which the UEs 115 and the base stations 105 may establish one or more communication links 125. The coverage area 110 may be an example of a geographic area over which the base stations 105 and the UEs 115 may support communication of signals according to one or more radio access technologies.
[0044] The UEs 115 may be distributed throughout the coverage area 110 of the wireless communication system 100, and each UE 115 may be fixed or mobile or both at different times. The UEs 115 may be devices of different forms or with different capabilities. Some example UEs 115 are shown in FIG. 1. The UEs 115 described herein may be capable of communicating with various types of devices, such as other UEs 115, base stations 105, or network equipment (e.g., core network nodes, relay devices, integrated access and backhaul (IAB) nodes, or other network equipment) as shown in FIG. 1.
[0045] The base stations 105 may communicate with the core network 130, with each other, or both. For example, the base stations 105 may interface with the core network 130 through one or more backhaul links 120 (e.g., via an S1, N2, N3, or other interface). The base stations 105 may communicate with each other through the backhaul links 120 (e.g., via an X2, Xn, or other interface), either directly (e.g., directly between the base stations 105), or indirectly (e.g., via the core network 130), or both. In some examples, the backhaul links 120 may be or include one or more wireless links.
[0046] One or more of the base stations 105 described herein may include or be referred to as a base transceiver station, wireless base station, access point, wireless transceiver, NodeB, eNodeB (eNB), next generation NodeB or giga-NodeB (any of which may be referred to as a gNB), Home NodeB, Home eNodeB, or other suitable terminology by one skilled in the art.
[0047] The UE 115 may include or be referred to as a mobile device, a wireless device, a remote device, a handheld device, or a subscriber device, or any other suitable terminology, and a "device" may be referred to as a unit, a station, a terminal, or a client, among other things. The UE 115 may also include or be referred to as a personal electronic device, such as a mobile phone, a personal digital assistant (PDA), a tablet computer, a laptop computer, or a personal computer. In some examples, the UE 115 may include or be referred to as a wireless local loop (WLL) station, an Internet of Things (IoT) device, an Internet of Everything (IoE) device, or a machine type communications (MTC) device, among other things, which may be implemented in various articles, such as an appliance, or a vehicle, a meter, among other things.
[0048] The UEs 115 described herein may be capable of communicating with various types of devices, such as other UEs 115 that may act as relays, as shown in FIG. 1, as well as base stations 105 and network equipment, including macro eNBs or gNBs, small cell eNBs or gNBs, or relay base stations, among others.
[0049] The UE 115 and the base station 105 may wirelessly communicate with each other via one or more communication links 125 on one or more carriers. The term “carrier” may refer to a set of radio frequency spectrum resources having a defined physical layer structure to support the communication link 125. For example, a carrier used for the communication link 125 may include a portion (e.g., a bandwidth portion (BWP)) of a radio frequency spectrum band that operates according to one or more physical layer channels for a given radio access technology (e.g., LTE, LTE-A, LTE-A Pro, NR). Each physical layer channel may carry collection signaling (e.g., synchronization signals, system information), control signaling that coordinates operation on the carrier, user data, or other signaling. The wireless communication system 100 may support communication with the UE 115 using carrier aggregation or multi-carrier operation. The UE 115 may be configured with multiple downlink component carriers and one or more uplink component carriers according to a carrier aggregation configuration. Carrier aggregation can be used with both frequency division duplexing (FDD) and time division duplexing (TDD) component carriers.
[0050] A signal waveform transmitted on a carrier may be composed of multiple subcarriers (e.g., using a multi-carrier modulation (MCM) technique such as orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) or discrete Fourier transform spread OFDM (DFT-S-OFDM)). In a system employing MCM techniques, a resource element may consist of one symbol period (e.g., the time length of one modulation symbol) and one subcarrier, where the symbol period and the subcarrier spacing are inversely proportional. The number of bits carried by each resource element may depend on the modulation scheme (e.g., the order of the modulation scheme, the coding rate of the modulation scheme, or both). Thus, the more resource elements the UE 115 receives and the higher the order of the modulation scheme, the higher the data rate of the UE 115 may be. Wireless communication resources may refer to a combination of radio frequency spectrum resources, time resources, and spatial resources (e.g., spatial layers or beams), and the use of multiple spatial layers may further increase data rates or data integrity for communications with UE 115.
[0051] The time interval for the base station 105 or the UE 115 may be, for example, T s =1 / (Δf max N f ) seconds, where Δf max may represent the maximum supported subcarrier spacing, and N f may represent the maximum discrete Fourier transform (DFT) size supported. The communication resource time intervals may be organized according to radio frames, each having a specified time length (e.g., 10 milliseconds (ms)). Each radio frame may be identified by a system frame number (SFN) (e.g., ranging from 0 to 1023).
[0052] Each frame may include multiple consecutively numbered subframes or slots, and each subframe or slot may have the same time length. In some examples, a frame may be divided (e.g., in the time domain) into subframes, and each subframe may be further divided into several slots. Alternatively, each frame may include a variable number of slots, and the number of slots may depend on the subcarrier spacing. Each slot may include several symbol periods (e.g., depending on the length of a cyclic prefix prepended to each symbol period). In some wireless communications systems 100, a slot may be further divided into multiple minislots containing one or more symbols. Excluding the cyclic prefix, each symbol period may include one or more (e.g., N f The time length of a symbol period may depend on the subcarrier spacing or the frequency band of operation.
[0053] A subframe, slot, minislot, or symbol may be the smallest scheduling unit (e.g., in the time domain) of the wireless communications system 100 and may be referred to as a transmission time interval (TTI). In some examples, the TTI length (e.g., the number of symbol periods in a TTI) may be variable. Additionally or alternatively, the smallest scheduling unit of the wireless communications system 100 may be dynamically selected (e.g., in a burst of shortened TTIs (sTTIs)).
[0054] The physical channels may be multiplexed on the carriers according to various techniques. The physical control channels and the physical data channels may be multiplexed on the downlink carriers using, for example, one or more of a time division multiplexing (TDM), a frequency division multiplexing (FDM), or a hybrid TDM-FDM technique. A control region (e.g., a control resource set (CORESET)) for the physical control channels may be defined by a number of symbol periods and may extend across the system bandwidth of the carrier or a subset of the system bandwidth. One or more control regions (e.g., CORESET) may be configured for a set of UEs 115. For example, one or more of the UEs 115 may monitor or search the control region for control information according to one or more search space sets, and each search space set may include one or more control channel candidates at one or more aggregation levels configured in a cascaded manner. The aggregation level for a control channel candidate may refer to the number of control channel resources (e.g., control channel elements (CCEs)) associated with coded information for a control information format having a given payload size. The search space sets may include a common search space set configured for transmitting control information to multiple UEs 115 and a UE-specific search space set for transmitting control information to a specific UE 115.
[0055] In some examples, the base stations 105 may be mobile and therefore provide communication coverage to moving geographic coverage areas 110. In some examples, the different geographic coverage areas 110 associated with different technologies may overlap, but the different geographic coverage areas 110 may be supported by the same base station 105. In other examples, overlapping geographic coverage areas 110 associated with different technologies may be supported by different base stations 105. The wireless communication system 100 may include a heterogeneous network, for example, where different types of base stations 105 provide coverage to various geographic coverage areas 110 using the same or different radio access technologies.
[0056] The wireless communication system 100 may be configured to support ultra-reliable or low latency communications, or various combinations thereof. For example, the wireless communication system 100 may be configured to support ultra-reliable low latency communications (URLLC) or mission-critical communications. The UEs 115 may be designed to support ultra-reliable, low latency, or critical functions (e.g., mission-critical functionality). Ultra-reliable communications may include private or group communications and may be supported by one or more mission-critical services, such as mission critical push-to-talk (MCPTT), mission critical video (MCVideo), or mission critical data (MCData). Support for mission-critical functionality may include service prioritization, and the mission-critical services may be used for public safety or general commercial applications. The terms ultra-reliable, low latency, mission-critical, and ultra-reliable low latency may be used interchangeably herein.
[0057] In some examples, the UE 115 may also be able to communicate directly with other UEs 115 via a device-to-device (D2D) communication link 135 (e.g., using a peer-to-peer (P2P) protocol or a D2D protocol). One or more UEs 115 utilizing D2D communication may be within the geographic coverage area 110 of the base station 105. Other UEs 115 in such a group may be outside the geographic coverage area 110 of the base station 105 or may not be able to receive transmissions from the base station 105 in some examples. In some examples, a group of UEs 115 communicating via D2D communication may utilize a one-to-many (1:M) system in which each UE 115 transmits to every other UE 115 in the group. In some examples, the base station 105 facilitates scheduling of resources for D2D communication. In other cases, D2D communication occurs between UEs 115 without the involvement of the base station 105.
[0058] The core network 130 may provide user authentication, access authorization, tracking, Internet Protocol (IP) connectivity, and other access, routing, or mobility functions. The core network 130 may be an evolved packet core (EPC) or 5G core (5GC), which may include at least one control plane entity (e.g., a mobility management entity (MME), an access and mobility management function (AMF)) that manages access and mobility, and at least one user plane entity (e.g., a serving gateway (S-GW), a packet data network (PDN) gateway (P-GW), or a user plane function (UPF)) that routes packets or interconnects to external networks. The control plane entity may manage non-access stratum (NAS) functions such as mobility, authentication, and bearer management for UEs 115 served by base stations 105 associated with the core network 130. User IP packets may be forwarded through the user plane entity, which may provide IP address allocation as well as other functions. The user plane entity may be connected to one or more network operators' IP services 150. The IP services 150 may include access to the Internet, an intranet, an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), or packet-switched streaming services.
[0059] Some of the network devices, such as the base station 105, may include subcomponents, such as an access network entity 140, which may be an example of an access node controller (ANC). Each access network entity 140 may communicate with the UE 115 through one or more other access network transmitting entities 145, which may be referred to as a radio head, a smart radio head, or a transmit / receive point (TRP). Each access network transmitting entity 145 may include one or more antenna panels. In some configurations, various functions of each access network entity 140 or base station 105 may be distributed across various network devices (e.g., radio heads and ANCs) or integrated into a single network device (e.g., the base station 105).
[0060] The wireless communication system 100 may operate using one or more frequency bands, typically in the range of 300 megahertz (MHz) to 300 gigahertz (GHz). The 300 MHz to 3 GHz region is commonly referred to as the ultra-high frequency (UHF) region or decimeter band because the wavelengths range from approximately 1 decimeter to 1 meter in length. Although UHF waves may be blocked or redirected by buildings and environmental features, the waves may penetrate structures sufficiently for a macrocell to serve UEs 115 located indoors. Transmission of UHF waves may be associated with smaller antennas and shorter distances (e.g., less than 100 kilometers) compared to transmissions using lower frequencies and longer waves in the high frequency (HF) or very high frequency (VHF) portions of the spectrum below 300 MHz.
[0061] The wireless communication system 100 may utilize both licensed and unlicensed radio frequency spectrum bands. For example, the wireless communication system 100 may employ License Assisted Access (LAA), LTE-Unlicensed (LTE-U) radio access technology, or NR technology in an unlicensed band, such as the 5 GHz industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) band. When operating in an unlicensed radio frequency spectrum band, devices such as the base station 105 and the UE 115 may utilize carrier sensing for collision detection and avoidance. In some examples, operation in an unlicensed band may be based on a carrier aggregation configuration in conjunction with a component carrier operating in a licensed band (e.g., LAA). Operation in an unlicensed spectrum may include downlink transmissions, uplink transmissions, P2P transmissions, or D2D transmissions, among other examples.
[0062] The base station 105 or UE 115 may be equipped with multiple antennas that may be used to utilize techniques such as transmit diversity, receive diversity, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications, or beamforming. The antennas of the base station 105 or UE 115 may be located in one or more antenna arrays or antenna panels that may support MIMO operations or transmit or receive beamforming. For example, one or more base station antennas or antenna arrays may be collocated in an antenna assembly such as an antenna tower. In some examples, antennas or antenna arrays associated with the base station 105 may be located in diverse geographic locations. The base station 105 may have an antenna array with several rows and columns of antenna ports that the base station 105 may use to support beamforming of communications with the UE 115. Similarly, the UE 115 may have one or more antenna arrays that may support various MIMO or beamforming operations. Additionally or alternatively, the antenna panels may support radio frequency beamforming for signals transmitted through the antenna ports.
[0063] Beamforming, sometimes referred to as spatial filtering, directional transmission, or directional reception, is a signal processing technique that may be used in a transmitting or receiving device (e.g., base station 105, UE 115) to shape or steer an antenna beam (e.g., transmit beam, receive beam) along a spatial path between the transmitting device and the receiving device. Beamforming may be achieved by combining signals communicated through antenna elements of an antenna array such that some signals propagating in a particular orientation relative to the antenna array are subject to constructive interference and other signals are subject to destructive interference. Adjustment of signals communicated through antenna elements may include the transmitting or receiving device applying an amplitude offset, a phase offset, or both to signals conveyed through an antenna element associated with the device. The adjustment associated with each of the antenna elements may be defined by a beamforming weight set associated with a particular orientation (e.g., relative to the transmitting or receiving device's antenna array or to some other orientation).
[0064] A transmitting device (e.g., UE 115, base station 105) may communicate with a receiving device (e.g., UE 115, base station 105). For example, the transmitting device may transmit a signal including a set of pilot resource elements (e.g., pilot symbols) and a set of data resource elements (e.g., data symbols) to the receiving device. The set of pilot resource elements may include a demodulation reference signal (DMRS). In such an example, the set of pilot resource elements may be referred to as a DMRS resource element (e.g., DMRS symbol). The set of data resource elements may include data that the transmitting device is communicating to the receiving device. The receiving device may use the PTRS to track and account for phase noise that occurs during communication.
[0065] In some examples, a receiving device may perform DPoD, which may be a technique that allows the receiving device to compensate for transmission nonlinearities caused by the PA of the transmitting device when the receiving device receives a transmission from the transmitting device. Performing DPoD may include the receiving device estimating a PA nonlinearity model using a set of DMRS resource elements (e.g., using OFDM symbols that include DMRS resource elements) and the receiving device using the estimated PA nonlinearity model to apply the model to a set of data resource elements and / or PTRS resource elements (e.g., to OFDM symbols that do not include DMRS resource elements). The closer the nonlinearity associated with the set of DMRS resource elements (e.g., or symbols that include DMRS resource elements) is to the nonlinearity associated with the set of data resource elements and / or the set of PTRS resource elements (e.g., or symbols that do not include DMRS resource elements), the more accurately the receiving device may be able to compensate for the transmission nonlinearities, e.g., as part of a DPoD procedure.
[0066] This disclosure describes techniques that may enable a transmitting device to adjust a 1st percentile peak value associated with an OFDM symbol that includes a pilot resource element (e.g., a set of DMRS resource elements) such that the nonlinearity associated with the OFDM symbol more closely resembles the nonlinearity associated with an OFDM symbol that does not include a DMRS resource element (e.g., a symbol that includes a PTRS resource element or a data resource element). Thus, the transmitting device may adjust the 1st percentile peak value of the OFDM symbol including the pilot resource element, thus allowing the transmitting device to more accurately compensate for transmission nonlinearities.
[0067] 2 illustrates an example of a wireless communication system 200 supporting an improved demodulation reference signal for digital post-distortion assistance according to an aspect of the disclosure. For example, a first device 205 and a second device 210 may each be an example of a UE 115 or a base station 105 as described with reference to FIG. 1. The first device 205 (e.g., a first wireless device that may be referred to as a transmitting device) may communicate with a second device 210 (e.g., a first wireless device that may be referred to as a receiving device). For example, the first device 205 may transmit a transmission 215 to the second device 210 over a channel 220. In some examples, the second device 210 may be within the geographic coverage area 110 of the first device 205.
[0068] In some examples, the transmission 215 may be an example of a data transmission. The transmitting device may reserve resources for the data transmission. The resources reserved for the data transmission may include one or more resource elements 222. Each resource element may span a time unit 225 (e.g., a symbol period, an OFDM symbol) and a frequency unit 230 (e.g., a subcarrier). A first set of resource elements may be data resource elements (e.g., data resource elements) and a second set of resource elements may be DMRS resource elements 235. In some examples, the DMRS resource elements 235 may include a DMRS. The other resource elements 240 may correspond to data resource elements and / or phase tracking reference signal (PTRS) resource elements.
[0069] The DMRS resource element 235 may include a DMRS. In some examples, the DMRS may be or may be referred to as an enhanced DMRS (eDMRS). The eDMRS may have one of multiple possible waveforms (e.g., the eDMRS may not be a predefined unique sequence). The waveform selected for the eDMRS may have the highest or lowest value of one or more criteria. When the first device 205 transmits the eDMRS to the second device 210 (e.g., via one or more of the sets of DMRS resource elements 235), the second device 210 may decode (e.g., blind decode) the eDMRS pattern and extract information embedded therein. After the second device 210 performs the decoding, the second device 210 may identify the eDMRS sequence. Thus, the second device 210 may use the eDMRS for channel estimation.
[0070] In some examples, the second device 210 may perform DPoD. DPoD may be a technique that may enable the first device 205 to transmit near (e.g., within a threshold therefrom) a compression point of the PA for the first device 205 and / or allow the second device 210 to compensate for transmission nonlinearities caused by the PA of the second device 210 when the second device 210 receives a transmission from the first device 205. Performing DPoD may enable the first device 205 to transmit at a higher power and may improve signal to noise ratio (SNR) and / or capacity compared to other techniques. Performing DPoD may also enable the first device 205 to transmit with a lower error vector magnitude (EVM) when performing quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) (e.g., superQAM, which may include 1024QAM and higher) or other modulation techniques having a larger constellation size (e.g., greater than 1024 points) than other techniques. The lower EVM may enable the first device 205 to use a smaller PA backoff, which may increase the range of communication. Thus, performing DPoD may enable improved communication efficiency.
[0071] DPoD techniques may include modeling the nonlinear impairments as additive signals, estimating the nonlinear impairments, and subtracting the nonlinear impairments from the received signal (e.g., through an iterative process). For example, DPoD may include two stages. The first stage may include estimating a PA nonlinearity model, which may be performed for a set of DMRS resource elements 235 (e.g., or a set of OFDM symbols that include DMRS resource elements). The second phase may include removing the nonlinear impairments from each data resource element of the other resource elements 240 using the estimated PA nonlinearity model (e.g., or OFDM symbols that do not include DMRS resource elements and / or that include data resource elements). In some examples, the nonlinearity may be data dependent and may vary from data resource element to data resource element. In some examples, the nonlinearity may be based on the distribution of symbol time-domain signal peaks and the overall signal peak to average power ratio (PAPR). For example, a lower signal 1st percentile peak value (eg, at least 1% of the samples having a higher amplitude) may decrease the nonlinearity, and a higher 1st percentile peak value may increase the nonlinearity.
[0072] In some examples, the 1st percentile peak value may be different (e.g., vary) between DMRS resource elements 235 and data resource elements, and / or between OFDM symbols including DMRS resource elements 235 and OFDM symbols not including DMRS resource elements. Due to the different 1st percentile peak values, data resource elements (e.g., or OFDM symbols not including DMRS resource elements 235 and / or including data resource elements) may exhibit higher nonlinearity than DMRS resource elements 235 (e.g., or OFDM symbols including DMRS resource elements 235). Thus, a PA model mismatch may occur between estimating a PA model using DMRS resource elements 235 (e.g., or OFDM symbols including DMRS resource elements 235) and applying the PA model to data resource elements (e.g., or OFDM symbols not including DMRS resource elements 235 and / or including data resource elements). Thus, the implementation of DPoD may exhibit error floor behavior.
[0073] This disclosure may relate to ways in which nonlinearity of a DMRS resource element 235 (e.g., or of an OFDM symbol that includes the DMRS resource element 235) may be increased using eDMRS. For example, the 1st percentile peak value of the DMRS resource element 235 may be increased (e.g., in a manner that does not affect the EVM or has a small effect on the EVM, e.g., the effect is less than a threshold). By increasing the 1st percentile peak value in this manner, model mismatch may be reduced, e.g., reduced below a threshold level or eliminated, and DPoD performance may be improved. Additionally or alternatively, the probability of model mismatch may be lowered, which may improve rate-over-range.
[0074] In some examples, the 1st percentile peak value of an OFDM symbol that includes a DMRS resource element 235 may be increased by transmitting a quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) signal in some or each of the DMRS resource elements 235. In some examples, the first device 205 may identify a set of QPSK constellation points (e.g., (00), (01), (10), and (11)) and may determine a 1st percentile peak value associated with each constellation point. For example, in the current example of a particular DMRS resource element 235, the first device 205 may determine that constellation point (01) is associated with the lowest 1st percentile peak value for the OFDM symbol, constellation point (11) is associated with the next lowest 1st percentile peak value for the OFDM symbol, constellation point (10) is associated with the next lowest 1st percentile peak value for the OFDM symbol, and constellation point (00) is associated with the highest 1st percentile peak value for the OFDM symbol. After determining the PAPR associated with each constellation point, the first device 205 may select a constellation point associated with a 1st percentile peak value above a threshold or the constellation point with the highest 1st percentile peak value for the OFDM symbol. In this example, the first device 205 may select constellation point (00) if constellation point (00) has the highest 1st percentile peak value. After selecting the constellation point, the first device 205 may modulate the DMRS resource element 235 according to the selected constellation point.
[0075] In some examples, the first device 205 may determine the constellation points using a sequential greedy method. For example, in one example, an OFDM symbol may include N DMRS resource elements 235, which may be numbered from 1 to N. In a first iteration of the sequential greedy method, a 1st percentile peak value may be calculated for the first DMRS resource element 235 by assuming that each of the other N-1 DMRS resource elements 235 has a value of 0 (e.g., carries no signal). The first device 205 may calculate a 1st percentile peak value for each hypothesis (e.g., four hypotheses) obtained by modulating the first DMRS resource element 235 according to each possible constellation point value of the set of constellation points. The first device 205 may select the best 1st percentile peak value (e.g., highest PAPR) and may set (e.g., fix) the value of the DMRS resource element 235 to the constellation point corresponding to the best DMRS value. In the mth iteration of the method, a 1st percentile peak value may be calculated for the mth DMRS resource element 235 by assuming that each of the previous DMRS resource elements 235 (e.g., 1 to m-1) was modulated according to a previously selected constellation point and each of the subsequent DMRS resource elements 235 (e.g., m+1 to N) has a value of 0 (e.g., carries no signal). As with the first DMRS resource element 235, the first device 205 may calculate each hypothetical 1st percentile peak value obtained by modulating the mth DMRS resource element 235 according to each possible constellation point value of the set of constellation points. The first device 205 may select the best 1st percentile peak value (e.g., the highest 1st percentile peak value) and may set (e.g., fix) the value of the DMRS resource element 235 to the constellation point corresponding to the best 1st percentile peak value. In some examples, the first device 205 may repeat the method for some or each other DMRS resource element 235.In this manner, the first device 205 may determine a sequence for one or more eDMRS associated with the DMRS resource element 235. In some examples, the successive greedy method may be performed offline, which may reduce complexity (e.g., computational complexity) at the first device 205.
[0076] In some examples, a certain percentage x% (e.g., 25%) of the DMRS resource elements 235 may be kept constant to enable the initial channel estimated for detection of the remainder of the eDMRS. The remaining percentage (100%-x%) may be used to raise the 1st percentile of the peak. In some examples, the eDMRS resource elements in the reserved tones may be constrained to be used for QPSK modulation, which may enable more reliable detection of the signal and may enable the use of the eDMRS sequence for channel estimation. Additionally or alternatively, the process of determining the QPSK symbols may be predefined (e.g., may be performed offline), which may lower the complexity (e.g., computational complexity) for the first device 205 or the second device 210. In such an option, no prior DMRS decoding by the second device 210 may occur. However, the first device 205 may send signaling to the second device 210 informing the second device 210 of the DMRS to be used (e.g., the DMRS sequence to be used).
[0077] Although this method is described for raising the 1st percentile peak value, there may be examples where the method may be used to lower the 1st percentile peak value. For example, if the nonlinearity associated with the DMRS resource element 235 (e.g., or the OFDM symbol that includes the DMRS resource element 235) is higher than the associated data resource element (e.g., or the OFDM symbol that includes the data resource element), the method may instead be used to lower the 1st percentile peak value associated with the DMRS resource element 235 (e.g., associated with the OFDM symbol that includes the DMRS resource element 235). Additionally or alternatively, it should be noted that although examples are described herein with respect to the 1st percentile peak value, there may be examples where the method may use a peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) instead of or in addition to the 1st percentile peak value. For example, the constellation point selected may be the constellation point with the lowest or highest PAPR value associated with the OFDM symbol that includes the DMRS resource element 235.
[0078] In some examples, the methods as described herein may be associated with one or more advantages. For example, adjusting the 1st percentile peak value of the DMRS resource elements 235 may reduce the probability that a PA mismatch may occur. In some examples, the first device 205 may use a smaller PA backoff and / or may increase the range of communication.
[0079] FIG. 3 illustrates an example of a communication diagram 300 supporting an improved demodulation reference signal for digital post-distortion assistance according to an aspect of the disclosure. In some examples, the communication diagram 300 may implement one or more aspects of the wireless communication systems 100 and / or 200. For example, the first device 205-a may be an example of the first device 205 as described with reference to FIG. 2, and the second device 210-a may be an example of the second device 210 as described with reference to FIG. 2. Additionally or alternatively, each of the first device 205-a and the second device 210-a may be an example of a base station 105 or a UE 115. In some examples, each or part of the methods described herein may be performed by a controller (e.g., the controller 310 or the controller 340 as described herein).
[0080] Initially, the first device 205-a may determine that it has data to transmit to the second device 210-a. The first device 205-a may modulate a DMRS (e.g., eDMRS) according to QPSK modulation (e.g., using the DMRS QPSK modulator 305). Modulating the DMRS may include the DMRS QPSK modulator 305 and / or the controller 310 determining a constellation point associated with a highest 1st percentile peak value or a 1st percentile peak value below a threshold for each of a set of DMRS resource elements and performing QPSK modulation according to each determined constellation point. The data encoder 315 may encode the data, and the data modulator 320 may modulate the data.
[0081] After performing modulation for the data and DMRS, the resource mapper 325 may map the modulated DMRS to a respective DMRS resource element and map the data to one or more data resource elements. After the resource mapper 325 performs the mapping, the first device 205-a may transmit a signal including the modulated DMRS and data to the second device 210-a.
[0082] The second device 210-a may receive the signal and may perform demapping on the signal. For example, the resource demapper 330 may identify resources corresponding to the modulated DMRS (e.g., DMRS resource elements) and data (e.g., data resource elements) and may demap the resources. The DMRS QPSK demodulator 335 may demodulate the modulated DMRS. In some examples, the controller 340 may perform the demodulation.
[0083] The second device 210-a may also demodulate the data via the data demodulator 345 and decode the data via the data decoder 350. In some examples, the data demodulator 345 may use the demodulated DMRS for data demodulation. For example, the second device 210-a may estimate phase noise using the demodulated DMRS, and the data demodulator 345 may perform data demodulation using the estimated phase noise.
[0084] 4 illustrates an example of a process flow 400 for supporting an improved demodulation reference signal for digital post-distortion assistance according to an aspect of the disclosure. The process flow 400 may be implemented by one or more aspects of the wireless communications systems 100 and / or 200. For example, the first device 205-b may be an example of the first device 205 as described with reference to FIG. 2, and the second device 210-b may be an example of the second device 210 as described with reference to FIG. 2. Additionally or alternatively, each of the first device 205-b and the second device 210-b may be an example of a base station 105 or a UE 115.
[0085] At 405, the first device 205-b may identify a set of resource elements for transmitting data in one or more symbol periods.
[0086] At 410, the first device 205-b may generate a sequence of a set of pilot resource elements associated with the set of data resource elements for one or more symbol periods based on the set of data resource elements, the sequence of the set of pilot resource elements including a DMRS. In some examples, generating a sequence may include selecting a sequence from a set of sequence candidates. In some examples, a sequence is selected from the set of sequence candidates based on a measure of the set of pilot resource elements and / or the set of data resource elements for the one or more symbol periods satisfying a threshold. The measure may include a percentile peak value, and satisfying the threshold may include the percentile peak value being above the threshold. Additionally or alternatively, the measure may have a set of values including a value for each sequence of the set of sequence candidates. In such examples, a sequence may be selected from the set of sequence candidates based on a measure associated with the sequence having a lowest value or a highest value of the set of values.
[0087] In some examples, generating the sequence may include selecting a sequence from a set of sequences, and transmitting the set of pilot resource elements is based on selecting a sequence from the set of sequences. In some examples, a sequence may be selected from the set of sequences based on a metric for the sequence satisfying a threshold. In some examples, the metric may include a percentile peak value, and satisfying the threshold may include the percentile peak value being above the threshold. In some examples, each sequence in the set of sequence candidates may have an associated value of the metric, and a sequence may be selected from the set of sequences based on the associated value of the metric for the sequence having a lowest value or a highest value as compared to the values of the metric for each of the other sequences in the set of sequence candidates.
[0088] In some examples, generating the sequence may include identifying a set of constellation points associated with a pilot resource element of the set of pilot resource elements, determining a value of the measure for the pilot resource element for each constellation point of the set of constellation points, and selecting, for the pilot resource element, a constellation point from the set of constellation points based on determining the value of the measure for each constellation point of the set of constellation points. In some examples, generating the sequence includes identifying a set of constellation points associated with a second pilot resource element of the set of pilot resource elements, determining a second value of the measure for the second pilot resource element for each constellation point of the second set of constellation points, and selecting, for the second pilot resource element, a second constellation point from the second set of constellation points based on determining the second value of the measure for each constellation point of the second set of constellation points.
[0089] In some examples, the first device 205-b may identify a first subset of the set of pilot resource elements that does not include the second subset of the set of pilot resource elements, the second subset of the set of pilot resource elements including the first pilot resource element and the second pilot resource element. In some examples, the first device 205-b may select a respective constellation point of the respective set of constellation points based on determining a respective value of the measure for each constellation point of the respective set of constellation points for each pilot resource element of the second subset of the set of pilot resource elements, and transmitting the set of pilot resource elements is based at least in part on selecting a respective constellation point for each pilot resource element of the second subset of the set of pilot resource elements. In some examples, the first device 205-b may refrain from determining a respective value of the measure for each pilot resource element of the first subset of the set of pilot resource elements, and transmitting the set of pilot resource elements is based at least in part on this refraining. In some examples, the measure may include a percentile peak, and selecting the constellation point includes determining, for each constellation point of the set of constellation points, a percentile peak value over a symbol period overlapping in time with the first pilot resource element, and selecting a first constellation point of the set of constellation points associated with a higher percentile peak value than a percentile peak value of a second constellation point of the set of constellation points. In some examples, the first constellation point may be associated with the highest percentile peak of each constellation point in the set of constellation points.
[0090] In some examples, generating the sequence may include identifying a set of constellation points for each pilot resource element of the set of pilot resource elements; generating a plurality of sequences of constellation points, each sequence of constellation points including one constellation point from a respective set of constellation points for the set of pilot resource elements; determining a measure value for each sequence of constellation points of the plurality of sequences of constellation points; and selecting a sequence of constellation points from the plurality of sequences of constellation points based on determining the measure value for each constellation point of the set of constellation points for the set of pilot resource elements, wherein transmitting the set of pilot resource elements is based on selecting the sequence of constellation points.
[0091] In some examples, the first device 205-b may identify a number of constellation points associated with performing quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) on pilot resource elements of the set of pilot resource elements, and generating the sequence is based at least in part on the number of constellation points being above a threshold. For example, below 1024QAM, the first device 205-b may not generate the sequence based on determining a 1st percentile peak value for each pilot symbol of the set of pilot symbols. However, above 1024QAM, the first device 205-b may generate the sequence based on determining a 1st percentile peak value for each pilot symbol of the set of pilot symbols.
[0092] At 415, the first device 205-b may transmit a set of pilot resource elements associated with the set of data resource elements to the second device 210-b in one or more symbols. At 420, the first device 205-b may transmit the set of data resource elements to the second device 210-b in one or more symbols. In some examples, transmitting the set of pilot resource elements may be based on selecting a sequence from a set of sequence candidates. In some examples, transmitting the set of pilot resource elements may be based on selecting a constellation point and / or selecting a second constellation point.
[0093] In some examples, the first device 205-b may transmit to the second device 210-b an indication of a first subset of the set of pilot resource elements, where the first subset of the set of resource elements does not include at least one pilot resource element of the set of pilot resource elements. In some examples, transmitting the set of pilot resource elements may be based on transmitting the indication of the first subset of the set of pilot resource elements. In some examples, transmitting the indication of the first subset of the set of pilot resource elements includes transmitting configuration signaling that identifies the first subset of the set of pilot resource elements. In some examples, transmitting the configuration signaling that identifies the first subset of the set of pilot resource elements includes transmitting a DMRS that identifies the first subset of the set of pilot resource elements. In some examples, the first device 205-b may identify a first subset of the set of pilot resource elements that does not include a second subset of the set of pilot resource elements, where transmitting the set of pilot resource elements is based on identifying the first subset of the set of pilot resource elements. In some examples, the first device 205-b may modulate each pilot resource element using QPSK and transmit the set of pilot resource elements based on this modulating.
[0094] At 425, the second device 210-b may decode a second subset of the set of pilot resource elements based on the first subset of the set of pilot resource elements to determine a DMRS associated with the set of data resource elements. In some examples, the second device 210-b may identify a first subset of the set of pilot resource elements that does not include the second subset of the set of pilot resource elements, and decoding the second subset of the set of pilot resource elements is based on identifying the first subset of the set of pilot resource elements. In some examples, receiving the set of pilot resource elements is based on a sequence having a lowest or highest value of a measure for the set of values.
[0095] At 430, the second device 210-b may perform a DPoD procedure on the received set of data resource elements based on the determined DMRS.
