[0001] In conventional contact lens packaging, the contact lens is typically seated in a molded plastic base with a cavity (or "bowl") that houses the contact lens in a concave-side-up orientation. As a result, the user experience for transferring the contact lens from the package to the eye typically involves the user "pulling" the contact lens out of the bowl with their fingers and then turning the lens over so that it is oriented correctly on their fingers for placement on the eye. This process requires touching the lens multiple times, which can transfer contaminants or pathogens from the hands to the lens and ultimately to the eye. Not only is this handling experience unsanitary, it is also overly messy, tedious, and mechanically stressful for the lens, which can tear, tear, or distort if overly manipulated. Although some packages are designed to present the lens in a convex side up orientation to eliminate the need to turn the lens inside out, they often still require the lens to be "pulled" from the packaging solution or otherwise require manipulation of the lens and / or multiple contacts with the lens to accomplish delivery of the lens to the eye.

With such a design, there is no need to transfer and manipulate the lens from one finger to another before placing it on the eye. Providing such one-touch packaging not only streamlines the lens preparation and insertion process, but also reduces the chances of dropping the lens and exposing it to additional bacteria on the wearer's other fingers as the lens is being prepared for orientation and insertion on the eye, and also reduces the chances of touching the side of the lens that is intended to contact the eye.

A contact lens package as described in claim 2, wherein the base cavity has an elongated shape defining a longitudinal axis of the base cavity, the at least one protrusion extends in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the base cavity, the at least one protrusion is entirely disposed within the base cavity, and optionally, the at least one protrusion extends from an intermediate region of the base cavity toward an end of the base cavity.
