Abstract
Description
[Technical field]
[0001] CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS This application is a nonprovisional application that claims priority to U.S. Provisional Application No. 62 / 373,772, filed Aug. 11, 2016, which is incorporated by reference in its entirety.
[0002] The present invention relates to antimicrobial compositions, including activated or inactivated antimicrobial compositions. In some embodiments, antimicrobial quaternary ammonium compounds are provided in combination with anionic surfactants to provide compositions with enhanced antimicrobial properties, which may include enhanced surface activity and / or bactericidal efficacy. In other aspects, antimicrobial quaternary ammonium compounds are provided in combination with anionic polymers or chelating agents. In particular, the combination provides enhanced antimicrobial activity compared to either anionic surfactants or quaternary ammonium compounds alone. In other embodiments, antimicrobial quaternary ammonium compounds are provided in combination with anionic surfactants to provide compositions with inactivated antimicrobial properties. Advantageously, the present invention provides activated or inactivated compositions depending on the particular application. [Background technology]
[0003] Antimicrobial agents are chemical compositions used to prevent microbiological contamination and deterioration of products, materials, and media (such as water process streams), and systems. Antimicrobial agents and compositions are used, for example, as disinfectants and sanitizers in connection with hard surface cleaning, food preparation, animal feed, cooling water, hospitality services, hospital and medical applications, pulp and paper manufacturing, textile cleaning, and water treatment. Among the diverse categories of antimicrobial agents and compositions, quaternary ammonium compounds represent one of the largest classes of agents used. At low concentrations, quaternary ammonium type antimicrobial agents are bacteriostatic, fungistatic, algicidal, sporostatic, and tuberculostatic. At moderate concentrations, they are bactericidal, fungicidal, algicidal, and virucidal against lipophilic viruses. Quaternary ammonium compounds are known to have difficulty retaining killing efficacy below about 150 ppm against gram-negative microorganisms such as E. coli, and are inefficient at low temperatures and pH. It is therefore desirable to enhance the antimicrobial activity of chemicals such as quaternary ammonium compounds for use in a variety of applications.
[0004] Accordingly, one object of the claimed invention is to develop improved antimicrobial quaternary ammonium compound-based compositions.
[0005] It is a further object of the present invention to provide a synergistic combination of a quaternary ammonium compound and an anionic surfactant that provides increased dynamic surface activity (as measured by a reduction in dynamic surface tension).
[0006] It is a further object of the present invention to provide synergistic compositions of quaternary ammonium compounds and anionic polymers or chelating agents to provide such improved and synergistic surface activity.
[0007] It is an object of the present invention to provide active compositions with enhanced and / or synergistic surface activity having use applications including disinfectants and / or sanitizing surfaces, including, for example, high level disinfectants for medical instruments, antimicrobial lubricants, laundry cleaning and sanitizing, antimicrobials with enhanced mildness and reduced irritancy, improved combination products, third sink applications, and the like.
[0008] A further object of the present invention is to provide enhanced antimicrobial and / or bactericidal activity in blends of quaternary ammonium compounds and anionic surfactants, including overcoming traditional limitations of quaternary ammonium compounds, including the traditional requirement of a neutral to alkaline pH for performance effectiveness, hard water performance limitations necessitating increased concentrations, and the need for higher concentrations of actives for effectiveness.
[0009] A further aspect of the present invention is to provide a germicidal composition to improve upon conventional quaternary ammonium compounds that do not have a high surface activity themselves. In one aspect, the enhanced antimicrobial and / or germicidal activity of the blend of quaternary ammonium compounds and anionic surfactants, including enhanced wetting in some applications, unexpectedly provides such activity at neutral or higher pH (as opposed to the acidic pH that is traditionally used for, for example, 500 ppm water hardness suspension tests). In a further aspect, and as a further advantage of the present invention, the composition provides enhanced mildness and reduced irritation without leaving significant residue on the substrate surface.
[0010] It is a further object of the present invention to provide a blend of quaternary ammonium compounds and anionic surfactants whose antimicrobial and / or bactericidal efficacy can be inactivated by the selection of anionic surfactant for the composition.
[0011] It is an object of the present invention to provide a deactivating composition of neutralized quaternary ammonium compounds and anionic surfactants, which has uses including, for example, water treatment, quaternary ammonium compound titration kits, surfactant recycling, and the like.
[0012] Other objects, advantages and features of the present invention will become apparent from the following specification taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings. Summary of the Invention
[0013] The composition according to the present invention provides the ability to enhance or inactivate the antimicrobial effectiveness of quaternary ammonium compounds. In one aspect, the selected anionic surfactants disclosed herein provide such a selection to provide an antimicrobial composition or an inactivated antimicrobial composition. According to one embodiment, anionic surfactants with strong ionic bonds serve to inactivate the antimicrobial effectiveness of quaternary ammonium compounds, while anionic surfactants with weak ionic bonds provide enhanced or "activated" antimicrobial effectiveness of quaternary ammonium compounds.
[0014] The composition of the present invention provides a quaternary ammonium compound in association with an anionic surfactant. In some embodiments, a quaternary ammonium having a carbon chain of less than 20 is included in the composition of the present invention.Examples of quaternary ammonium compounds useful in the present invention include, but are not limited to, alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride, alkyl dimethyl ethyl benzyl ammonium chloride, octyl decyl dimethyl ammonium chloride, dioctyl dimethyl ammonium chloride, and didecyl dimethyl ammonium chloride, to name a few.A single quaternary ammonium or a combination of more than one quaternary ammonium can be included in the composition of the present invention. Further examples of quaternary ammonium compounds useful in the present invention include, but are not limited to, benzethonium chloride, ethylbenzylalkonium chloride, myristyltrimethylammonium chloride, methylbenzethonium chloride, cetalkonium chloride, cetrimonium bromide (CTAB), carnitine, dophanium chloride, tetraethylammonium bromide (TEAB), domiphen bromide, benzododecinium bromide, benzoxonium chloride, choline, cocamidopropyl betaine (CAPB), and denatonium.
[0015] The composition of the present invention further comprises an anionic surfactant that is selected for the desired antimicrobial or inactivation antimicrobial effect on the quaternary ammonium compound. As described in accordance with the present invention, it has been found that the combination of quaternary ammonium compounds and anionic surfactants can either enhance or deactivate the antimicrobial effectiveness that can be selected based on their surface activity. That is, if a combination is more highly surface active (low surface tension) compared to another combination, the combination with the highest surface activity can enhance the antimicrobial effectiveness of the quaternary ammonium. In contrast, if a combination has a lower surface activity (higher surface tension) compared to another combination, the combination with the lower surface activity will neutralize or deactivate the antimicrobial effectiveness of the quaternary ammonium.
[0016] In certain preferred embodiments, the combination of at least one quaternary ammonium compound with a carboxylate-based anionic surfactant provides improved antimicrobial activity compared to either of the components used alone. In preferred embodiments, the synergistic combination increases the activity of the quaternary ammonium compound against microbial loads where neither the anionic surfactant nor the quaternary ammonium compound is effective alone. Thus, the described compositions have advantages over existing antimicrobial treatments and provide improved results. The combinations disclosed herein of antimicrobial agents together with anionic surfactants provide better results than either of the individual components used separately. Examples of preferred carboxylate anionic surfactants for enhancing the surface activity and antimicrobial efficacy of quaternary ammonium compounds include carboxylates having carbon chains of C6 to C10. Examples of anionic carboxylate surfactants include organic acids such as hexanoic acid, heptanoic acid, octanoic acid, nonanoic acid, and decanoic acid. Examples of branched chain organic acids include ethylhexyl carboxylate, isononanoic acid, and tridecyl carboxylate. An example of a commercially available surfactant is Marlowet 4539 (a C9 alcohol polyethylene glycol ether carboxylic acid available from Sasol). In other embodiments, the phosphate ester serves to enhance the antimicrobial activity of the quaternary ammonium compound.
[0017] The composition of the present invention further comprises an anionic polymer or a chelating agent. In one embodiment, the composition is a quaternary ammonium compound with a chain length of less than C20 and free of silanes, combined with an anionic polymer and / or a chelating agent. In some embodiments, the anionic polymer and / or chelating agent used in combination with the quaternary ammonium compound is a polyacrylate, an acrylamide, a carboxylate, a phosphinic acid or phosphonate salt, or a mixture thereof. In one embodiment, the composition has a pH of 3 or less. In a further embodiment, the composition is substantially free of oxidizing agents. In a further embodiment, the quaternary ammonium compound used in the composition of the present invention is a mixture of dialkyl quaternary ammonium and alkylbenzyl quaternary ammonium, and the anionic polymer is a polyacrylate, an acrylamide, a carboxylate, a phosphinic acid or phosphonate salt, or a mixture thereof.
[0018] In a preferred embodiment, the quaternary ammonium compound used in the antimicrobial compositions of the invention consists of a mixture of dialkyl quaternary ammonium and alkylbenzyl quaternary ammonium, and the anionic surfactant is octanoic acid, nonanoic acid, or decanoic acid, or a mixture thereof.
[0019] In other preferred embodiments, the combination of at least one quaternary ammonium compound with a sulfate or sulfonate based anionic surfactant provides inactivated antimicrobial or surface activity of the quaternary ammonium compound. In certain preferred embodiments, the combination of at least one quaternary ammonium compound with a stronger ionic bond with an anionic surfactant deactivates the antimicrobial effectiveness of the quaternary ammonium compound. Examples of commercially available sulfate or sulfonated anionic surfactants include X-AES(C), available from Huntsman Chemical. 12~14 -(PO) 16-(EO)2-sulfate), SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate), and SLES (sodium lauryl ether sulfate).
[0020] Methods of using the compositions are also included within the embodiments of the invention.
[0021] While multiple embodiments are disclosed, still other embodiments of the present invention will become apparent to those skilled in the art from the following detailed description, which shows and describes illustrative embodiments of the invention. Accordingly, the drawings and detailed description are to be regarded as illustrative in nature and not restrictive. These and other features, objects, and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the following detailed description of the invention. [Brief description of the drawings]

For the purposes of this patent application, good microbial reduction is achieved when the microbial population is reduced by at least about 50%, or significantly more than that is achieved by washing with water. A greater reduction in microbial counts provides a higher level of protection. The distinction between antimicrobial "cidal" or "static" activity, definitions describing the degree of effectiveness, and official laboratory protocols for measuring this effectiveness are considerations for understanding the relevance of antimicrobial agents and compositions. Antimicrobial compositions can affect two types of microbial cell damage. The first is a lethal, irreversible action that results in the destruction or incapacitation of complete microbial cells. The second type of cell damage is reversible, so that the organism can reproduce again when it is free of the agent. The former is called microbiocidal, the latter microbiostatic. Sanitizers and disinfectants are, by definition, agents that provide antimicrobial or microbiocidal activity. In contrast, preservatives are generally described as inhibitors or microbistatic compositions.
[0040] As used herein, the term "microorganism" refers to any non-cellular or unicellular (including colonial) organism. Microorganisms include all prokaryotes. Microorganisms include bacteria (including cyanobacteria), spores, lichens, fungi, protozoa, virinos, viroids, viruses, phages, and some algae.
[0041] As used herein, the term "sanitizer" refers to an agent that reduces the number of bacterial contaminants to a safe level as determined by public health requirements. In one embodiment, the sanitizer for use in the present invention will provide at least a 99.999% reduction (a 5 log order reduction). According to this reference, a sanitizer must provide a 99.999% reduction (a 5 log order reduction) for several test organisms within 30 seconds at room temperature, 25±2°C. According to an embodiment of the present invention, the sanitizing rinse provides a 99.999% reduction (a 5 log order reduction) of the organisms of interest (including bacterial contamination) at the temperature of use. The first is a lethal, irreversible action that results in complete microbial cell destruction or incapacity. The second type of cell damage is reversible, so that the organism can grow again when it is free of the agent. The former is called microbiocidal and the latter microbistatic. Sanitizers and disinfectants are, by definition, agents that provide antimicrobial or microbicidal activity. In contrast, preservatives are generally described as inhibitors or microbistatic compositions.
[0042] As used herein, the term "substantially free" refers to a composition that is completely free of the component or has such a small amount of the component that it does not affect the performance of the composition. The component may be present as an impurity or contaminant and must be less than 0.5% by weight. In another embodiment, the amount of the component is less than 0.1% by weight, and in yet another embodiment, the amount of the component is less than 0.01% by weight.
[0043] As used herein, the term "surfactant" is a compound that contains a lipophilic segment and a hydrophilic segment and that, when added to water or solvent, reduces the surface tension of the system.
[0044] As used herein, the term "ware" refers to dishware and cooking utensils, tableware, and other hard surfaces such as showers, sinks, toilets, bathtubs, countertops, windows, mirrors, transportation vehicles, and floors. As used herein, the term "warewashing" refers to washing, cleaning, or rinsing of ware. Ware also refers to items made of plastic. Types of plastics that can be cleaned with the composition according to the present invention include, but are not limited to, those that include polycarbonate polymers (PC), acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene polymers (ABS), and polysulfone polymers (PS). Another exemplary plastic that can be cleaned using the compounds and compositions of the present invention includes polyethylene terephthalate (PET).
[0045] As used herein, the term "water" includes food processing or transport water. Food processing or transport water includes produce transport water (e.g., as found in flumes, pipe transports, cutters, slicers, blanchers, retort systems, washers, etc.), belt sprays for food transport lines, boot and hand wash soak pans, third sink rinse water, etc. Water can also include domestic and recreational waters, such as pools, spas, recreational flumes and water slides, fountains, etc.
[0046] As used herein, "weight percent," "wt-%," "percent by weight," "% by weight," and variations thereof refer to the concentration of a substance as the weight of that substance divided by the total weight of the composition multiplied by 100. As used herein, it is understood that "percent," "%," and the like are intended to be synonymous with "weight percent," "% by weight," and the like.
[0047] As used herein, the term "water soluble" refers to a composition or ingredient where the composition or ingredient is at least 90% soluble in water, at least 95% soluble in water, at least 98% soluble in water, at least 99% soluble in water, or at least 99.9% soluble in water.
[0048] The methods and compositions of the invention may comprise, consist essentially of, or consist of the components and ingredients of the invention as well as other components described herein. As used herein, "consisting essentially of" means that the methods and compositions may include additional steps, components, or ingredients, but only if the additional steps, components, or ingredients do not materially alter the basic and novel characteristics of the claimed methods and compositions.
[0049] Activated antimicrobial composition According to the present invention, an antimicrobial composition combining at least one quaternary ammonium compound and at least one anionic surfactant provides improved antimicrobial activity over either of the components used alone. In some embodiments, the antimicrobial composition according to the present invention advantageously provides synergistic surface activity (reduced dynamic surface tension) and is cost-effective. Furthermore, it has been found that the combination of synergistic antimicrobial and / or bactericidal efficacy also helps reduce the unpleasant odor of certain anionic surfactants such as fatty acids (e.g., C6-C10 carboxylated surfactants), providing a further advantage of the compositions of the present invention.
[0050] In one embodiment, the antimicrobial composition according to the invention comprises, consists of, and / or consists essentially of a quaternary ammonium compound and an anionic surfactant and / or an anionic acid. In another embodiment, the antimicrobial composition according to the invention comprises, consists of, and / or consists essentially of a quaternary ammonium compound with each R group having a chain length of C20 or less, and an anionic surfactant with a chain length of C10 or less for linear or branched carboxylates. In one embodiment, the carboxylates may be alkoxylated or non-alkoxylated. In another embodiment, the antimicrobial composition according to the invention comprises, consists of, and / or consists essentially of a quaternary ammonium compound with each R group having a chain length of C20 or less, and an anionic surfactant with a chain length of C13 or less for linear or branched carboxylates.
[0051] Antimicrobial compositions according to the invention overcome the poor surface activity of quaternary ammonium compounds while providing effective antimicrobial and / or bactericidal capabilities. Compositions of quaternary ammonium compounds and anionic surfactants are synergistically more surface active and effective, which advantageously provides improved performance under stress conditions. In some embodiments, the antimicrobial compositions are effective at neutral and / or alkaline pH (as opposed to the lower pH range of about 1-5 required for the EPA standard used in the water hardness suspension test). Advantageously, the selection of the anionic surfactant and quaternary ammonium compound activates (i.e., synergizes) the quaternary ammonium compound to provide the desired surface activity, including antimicrobial and / or bactericidal activity, as a result of the synergistic effect and improved wettability of the composition. In one embodiment, without being limited to a particular mechanism of action, anionic surfactants having a chain length of C10 or less provide suitable activation to provide antimicrobial compositions according to the invention. This combination of a quaternary ammonium compound with an anionic surfactant having a desired anionic head group and chain length is a non-oxidative approach that enhances the surface activity and antimicrobial effectiveness of the quaternary ammonium compound complex in an unexpected manner. Furthermore, the provided antimicrobial composition has increased mildness and reduced irritation as a result of neutralization or partial neutralization, and results in reduced residue on the substrate surface.
[0052] According to some embodiments, the antimicrobial composition according to the invention provides activation and synergistic effects of the quaternary ammonium compound that are molar ratio dependent. In one aspect, the composition comprises a molar ratio of about 1 quaternary ammonium compound to anionic surfactant. In another aspect, the composition comprises a molar ratio of about 10 to about 1 quaternary ammonium compound to anionic surfactant. In another aspect, the composition comprises a molar ratio of about 1 to about 10 quaternary ammonium compound and anionic surfactant, or any combination thereof. In another embodiment, the antimicrobial composition is provided in a molar ratio of anionic surfactant to quaternary ammonium of about 1 mole of anionic surfactant to about 1 mole of quaternary ammonium compound. In another embodiment, the antimicrobial composition is provided in a molar ratio of anionic surfactant to quaternary ammonium of about 1.5 moles of anionic surfactant to about 1 mole of quaternary ammonium compound. In another embodiment, the antimicrobial composition is provided in a molar ratio of anionic surfactant to quaternary ammonium compound of about 1 mole of anionic surfactant to about 10 moles of quaternary ammonium compound. In another embodiment, the antimicrobial composition is provided in a molar ratio of anionic surfactant to quaternary ammonium compound of about 2 moles anionic surfactant to about 1 mole quaternary ammonium compound.
[0053] Inactivated Antimicrobial Compositions (Inactivation of Antimicrobial QACs) Furthermore, it has been found that the modification of the antimicrobial composition described herein can be carried out to preferentially select at least one quaternary ammonium compound and at least one anionic surfactant to provide an inactivated composition.According to the present invention, some anionic surfactants act to reduce the antimicrobial activity of quaternary ammonium compounds. In one embodiment, sulfated and sulfonated anionic surfactants inactivate the antimicrobial activity of quaternary ammonium compounds. It is believed that anionic surfactants with stronger ionic charge help to deactivate the antimicrobial effectiveness of quaternary ammonium compounds, while anionic surfactants with weaker ionic charge help to enhance or activate the antimicrobial effectiveness of quaternary ammonium compounds.
[0054] In one embodiment, an inactivated antimicrobial composition according to the invention comprises, consists of, and / or consists essentially of a quaternary ammonium compound and an anionic surfactant. In another embodiment, an inactivated antimicrobial composition according to the invention comprises, consists of, and / or consists essentially of a quaternary ammonium compound with each R group having a chain length of C20 or less, and a sulfate or sulfonate anionic surfactant having an alkyl chain greater than C10 for a straight or branched chain.
[0055] Inactivated antimicrobial compositions according to the present invention desirably result in a reduction in the surface activity of quaternary ammonium compounds for certain applications of use. Without being bound by theory, the present invention demonstrates that the complex or ion pair between quaternary ammonium salts and anionic surfactants by charge neutralization effectively reduces the hydrophilic cross-sectional area for both surfactants, making stacking at the interface highly favorable. Complex formation is so favorable that it can overcome the cohesive forces between fatty acid molecules. According to one aspect of the present invention, the stronger ionic charge of certain anionic surfactants, such as sulfate or sulfonate anionic surfactants, effectively neutralizes (or partially neutralizes the quaternary ammonium ionic charge) or inactivates the antimicrobial quaternary ammonium compounds.
[0056] According to some embodiments, the inactivated antimicrobial composition according to the invention provides a reduction in surface activation of quaternary ammonium compounds that is molar ratio dependent. In one aspect, the composition comprises a molar ratio of about 1 quaternary ammonium compound to anionic surfactant. In another aspect, the composition comprises a molar ratio of about 10 to about 1 quaternary ammonium compound to anionic surfactant. In another aspect, the composition comprises a molar ratio of about 1 to about 10 quaternary ammonium compound to anionic surfactant. In another aspect, the composition comprises a molar ratio of about 1 to about 10 quaternary ammonium compound to anionic surfactant. In another embodiment, the inactivated antimicrobial composition is provided in a molar ratio of anionic surfactant to quaternary ammonium of about 1 mole of anionic surfactant to about 1 mole of quaternary ammonium compound. In another embodiment, the inactivated antimicrobial composition is provided in a molar ratio of anionic surfactant to quaternary ammonium of about 1.5 moles of anionic surfactant to about 1 mole of quaternary ammonium compound. In another embodiment, the inactivated antimicrobial composition is provided in a molar ratio of anionic surfactant to quaternary ammonium compound of about 1 mole of anionic surfactant to about 10 moles of quaternary ammonium compound. In another embodiment, the inactivated antimicrobial composition is provided in a molar ratio of anionic surfactant to quaternary ammonium compound of about 2 moles anionic surfactant to about 1 mole quaternary ammonium compound.

[0087] In one embodiment, sulfated and sulfonated anionic surfactants result in reduced or inactivated surface activity of quaternary ammonium compounds. Sulfated and sulfonated anionic surfactants have stronger ionic bonds and serve to deactivate the antimicrobial effectiveness of quaternary ammonium compounds, while anionic surfactants with weaker ionic bonds serve to enhance or activate the antimicrobial effectiveness of quaternary ammonium compounds. Examples of commercially available sulfate or sulfonated anionic surfactants include X-AES(C), available from Huntsman Chemical. 12~14 -(PO) 16-(EO)2-sulfate), SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate), SLES (sodium lauryl ether sulfate), LAS (linear alkyl benzyl sulfonates), and AOS (alpha olefin sulfonates).
[0088] As described herein according to the present invention, the ability of a combination of quaternary ammonium compounds and anionic surfactants to either enhance or deactivate antimicrobial efficacy can be predicted based on their surface activity. That is, if a combination is highly surface active compared to another combination (which indicates that the quaternary ammonium compound is water-soluble and therefore available for surface activity and antimicrobial action), the combination with the highest surface activity enhances the antimicrobial efficacy of the quaternary ammonium. In contrast, if a combination has a lower surface activity compared to another combination, the combination with low surface activity neutralizes or deactivates the antimicrobial efficacy of the quaternary ammonium.
[0089] In one embodiment of the invention, the antimicrobial efficacy of the composition may be increased or decreased depending on the anionic surfactant used. In accordance with the present invention, a method is provided for adjusting the antimicrobial activity of a quaternary ammonium compound.

In other embodiments, the compositions according to the invention contain at least two anionic chelating agents, or an anionic polymer and an anionic chelating agent, or an anionic chelating agent and an anionic surfactant. Anionic polymers and chelating agents are classified as anionic agents because the charge on the hydrophobe is negative, or as surfactants (e.g., carboxylic acids) in which the hydrophobic portion of the molecule does not carry a charge unless the pH is raised to neutral or above. Carboxylate, sulfonate, sulfate, and phosphate are polar (hydrophilic) solubilizing groups found in anionic compounds. Of the cations (counterions) associated with these polar groups, sodium, lithium, and potassium impart solubility in water, ammonium and substituted ammonium ions provide solubility in both water and oil, and calcium, barium, and magnesium promote solubility in oil.

For example, in certain embodiments, such as food contamination defoaming applications, nonionic surfactants are desired, preferably including alcohol alkoxylates and EO / PO block copolymers.
[0123] Useful nonionic surfactants are generally characterized by the presence of an organic hydrophobic group and an organic hydrophilic group, and are typically produced by the condensation of an organic aliphatic, alkyl aromatic, or polyoxyalkylene hydrophobic compound with a hydrophilic alkaline oxide moiety, which is generally ethylene oxide or its polyhydration product, polyethylene glycol. In fact, any hydrophobic compound having a hydroxyl, carboxyl, amino, or amide group with a reactive hydrogen atom can be condensed with ethylene oxide, or its polyhydration adducts, or its mixtures with alkoxylene such as propylene oxide, to form a nonionic surfactant. The length of the hydrophilic polyoxyalkylene moiety condensed with any particular hydrophobic compound can be easily adjusted to produce a water-dispersible or water-soluble compound with the desired degree of balance between hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties. Useful nonionic surfactants include: Block polyoxypropylene-polyoxyethylene polymer compounds based on propylene glycol, ethylene glycol, glycerol, trimethylolpropane, and ethylenediamine as initiator reactive hydrogen compounds are included. Examples of polymer compounds made from sequential propoxylation and ethoxylation of initiators are commercially available under the trade names Pluronic® and Tetronic® from BASF Corp. Pluronic® is a difunctional (two reactive hydrogen) compound formed by condensing ethylene oxide with a hydrophobic base formed by the addition of propylene oxide to the two hydroxyl groups of propylene glycol. This hydrophobic portion of the molecule has a molecular weight of about 1,000 to about 4,000. Ethylene oxide is then added to sandwich this hydrophobe between the hydrophilic groups, with the length controlled to comprise about 10% to about 80% by weight of the final molecule. Tetronic® compounds are tetrafunctional block copolymers obtained from the sequential addition of propylene oxide and ethylene oxide to ethylenediamine. The molecular weight of the propylene oxide hydrotype ranges from about 500 to about 7,000; the hydrophilic ethylene oxide is added to constitute from about 10% to about 80% by weight of the molecule.

The acid portion may consist of a mixture of acids within the carbon atom range defined above, or may consist of an acid having a specific number of carbon atoms within this range.
[0127] In addition to ethoxylated carboxylic acids, commonly referred to as polyethylene glycol esters, glycerides, glycerin, and other alkanoic acid esters formed by reaction with polyhydric (saccharide or sorbitan / sorbitol) alcohols have special embodiment applications in the present invention, particularly indirect food additive applications. All of these ester moieties have one or more reactive hydrogen sites on their molecules that can be subjected to further acylation or ethylene oxide (alkoxide) addition to control the hydrophilicity of these materials. Care must be taken when adding these fatty esters or acylated carbohydrates to the compositions of the present invention containing amylase and / or lipase enzymes due to possible incompatibilities.
[0128] Examples of non-ionic low foaming surfactants are: These include compounds from (1) that have been modified, essentially reversed, by adding ethylene oxide to ethylene glycol to provide a hydrophile of a specified molecular weight, and then adding propylene oxide to obtain a hydrophobic block on the outside (end) of the molecule. The hydrophobic portion of the molecule has a molecular weight of about 1,000 to about 3,100, and the central hydrophile comprises 10% to about 80% by weight of the final molecule. These reverse Pluronics are made by BASF Corporation under the trade name Pluronic R surfactants. Similarly, Tetronic R surfactants are manufactured by BASF Corporation by the sequential addition of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide to ethylenediamine. The hydrophobic portion of the molecule has a molecular weight of about 2,100 to about 6,700, and the central hydrophile comprises 10% to about 80% by weight of the final molecule.
[0129] Compounds from groups (1), (2), (3) and (4) modified by "capping" or "end blocking" the terminal hydroxy group(s) (of the polyfunctional moiety) to reduce foaming by reaction with hydrophobic small molecules such as propylene oxide, butylene oxide, benzyl chloride, and short chain fatty acids, alcohols or alkyl halides containing 1 to about 5 carbon atoms, and mixtures thereof. Also included are reactants such as thionyl chloride that convert the terminal hydroxy group to a chloride group. Such modifications to the terminal hydroxy group may result in all-block, block-heteric, heteric-block, or all-heteric nonionic materials.

The antimicrobial composition or deactivated antimicrobial composition that contacts the surface and / or product in need of treatment may be referred to as a concentrate or a use composition (or use solution) depending on the formulation used in the method according to the present invention. It should be understood that the concentration of the quaternary ammonium compound and the anionic surfactant in the composition will vary depending on whether the composition is used as a concentrate or a use solution. In one embodiment, the concentrated composition may be diluted into a use solution before application to an object. The concentrate is sold and the end user can dilute the concentrate with water or an aqueous diluent into a use solution.
[0179] The compositions of the present invention may be formulated and sold for use as is or as a solvent concentrate. If desired, such concentrates may be used at full concentration as an antimicrobial. However, the concentrate will typically be diluted with a fluid (e.g., water) to subsequently form a dilute phase or use solution. Preferably, the concentrate forms a single phase prior to such dilution and is left stored in the container in which it is sold. When combined with water or other desired dilution fluid at an appropriate dilution level and subjected to gentle agitation (e.g., stirring or pumping the composition), some compositions of the present invention form pseudostable dispersions, while other compositions of the present invention form clear or metastable solutions or dispersions. When a pseudostable composition is formed, the composition remains in a pseudostable state long enough to allow the composition to be applied to a surface before the onset of phase separation. The pseudostable state need only last for a few seconds when a suitable rapid application technique such as spraying is employed or when agitation during application is used. The pseudostable state desirably lasts for at least one minute or more, while the composition preferably lasts for five minutes or more after mixing when stored in a suitable container. In many cases, regular refilling or refilling of the applicator (eg, by dipping the applicator into the composition) provides sufficient agitation to maintain a pseudo-steady state of the composition during application.
[0180] Use solutions may be prepared from the concentrates by diluting the concentrates with water in a dilution ratio that provides a use solution with the desired cleaning and / or other antimicrobial properties. The water used to dilute the concentrate to form the use composition may be referred to as dilution water or diluent and may vary from location to location. A typical dilution factor is approximately 1 to approximately 10,000, but will depend on factors such as water hardness, amount of soil to be removed, etc. In one embodiment, the concentrates are diluted at a ratio of concentrate to water of about 1:10 to about 1:10,000. Specifically, the concentrates are diluted at a ratio of concentrate to water of about 1:100 to about 1:5,000. More specifically, the concentrates are diluted at a ratio of concentrate to water of about 1:250 to about 1:2,000.
[0181] In a preferred embodiment, the compositions of the present invention include a concentrate composition and a use composition. In one embodiment, the concentrate composition can be diluted into a use solution before application to an object. The concentrate is sold and the end user can dilute the concentrate with water or an aqueous diluent into a use solution. The level of active ingredient in the concentrate composition depends on the intended dilution ratio and the desired activity of the antimicrobial composition. Generally, a dilution of about 1 fluid ounce to about 10 gallons of water to about 10 fluid ounces to about 1 gallon of water is used for the aqueous compositions of the present invention. In some embodiments, higher use dilutions can be used when high use temperatures (above 25°C) or long exposure times (above 30 seconds) may be used. In a typical use location, the concentrate is diluted using commonly available tap water or clean water at a dilution ratio of about 3 to about 40 ounces of concentrate per 100 gallons of water with most proportions of water.
[0182] In some embodiments, the concentrated composition can be diluted at a dilution ratio of about 0.1 g / L to about 100 g / L of diluent, about 0.5 g / L to about 10.0 g / L of diluent, about 1.0 g / L to about 4.0 g / L of diluent, or about 1.0 g / L to about 2.0 g / L of diluent.
[0183] In other embodiments, the use composition may comprise from about 0.01 to about 10% by weight of the concentrated composition and from about 90 to about 99.99% by weight of the diluent, or from about 0.1 to about 1% by weight of the concentrated composition and from about 99 to about 99.9% by weight of the diluent.
[0184] The amount of the components in the use composition can be calculated from the amounts listed above for the concentrated composition and their dilution factors. In some embodiments, the concentrated composition of the present invention is diluted so that the quaternary ammonium component is present at about 10 ppm to about 100 ppm, or about 50 ppm to about 400 ppm. In other embodiments, the concentrated composition of the present invention is diluted so that the quaternary ammonium compound is present at about 20 ppm or more, about 40 ppm or more, about 60 ppm or more, about 80 ppm or more, about 100 ppm or more, about 500 ppm, about 1000 ppm, or about 10,000 to about 20,000 ppm. It is understood that all values and ranges between these values and ranges are encompassed by the method of the present invention.
[0185] A variety of fluids can be used as the dilution solvent, including water in its liquid form; steam; condensed gases and other supercritical fluids (e.g., CO2); perchloroethylene; oils such as silicone oils (e.g., siloxanes), gear oils, transaxle oils, mineral oils, or vegetable oils; and carboxylic acid esters such as methyl soyate. Mixtures of dilution solvents can be used if necessary. Preferably, the dilution solvent consists essentially of or consists of water in its liquid form. The remainder of this specification primarily discusses the use of water in its liquid form as the dilution solvent, but it is understood that other suitable fluids can be added to or substituted for water in its liquid form if necessary.
[0186] In one embodiment of the present invention, the concentrate compositions and use compositions are tolerant or independent of water conditions such as water hardness while maintaining their germicidal effectiveness. According to an embodiment of the present invention, the compositions are tolerant of water conditions of water hardness of about 0 parts per million (ppm) to about 500 ppm (about 0 to about 30 grains per gallon) without affecting the germicidal effectiveness according to an embodiment of the present invention. As referred to herein, ppm of water hardness refers to the ppm of calcium, magnesium, and other metals that may be found in water and contribute to the hardness level.
[0187] Manufacturing method The compositions of the present invention are prepared by adding the ingredients: an anionic surfactant to a quaternary ammonium compound, which readily couples the more hydrophobic organic acids into solution with minimal or no agitation.

The use solution can be prepared from the concentrate by diluting the concentrate with water at a dilution ratio that provides the use solution with the desired cleaning and / or other antimicrobial properties. The water used to dilute the concentrate to form the use composition can be referred to as dilution water or diluent and can vary from place to place. Typical dilution ratios are between about 1 to about 10,000. In one embodiment, the concentrate is diluted at a ratio of concentrate to water of about 1:10 to about 1:10,000. Specifically, the concentrate is diluted at a ratio of concentrate to water of about 1:100 to about 1:5,000. More specifically, the concentrate is diluted at a ratio of concentrate to water of about 1:250 to about 1:2,000.
[0206] In one embodiment, the concentrated antimicrobial composition is diluted to a use solution concentration of about 0.001% (w / v) to about 10% (w / v), or about 0.001% (w / v) to about 5% (w / v), or about 0.001% (w / v) to about 2% (w / v), or about 0.01% (w / v) to about 1% (w / v). The pseudostable state need only last for a few seconds when a suitable rapid application technique, such as spraying, is employed, or when agitation during application is used.
[0208] Various applications of the uses described herein provide a composition of a quaternary ammonium compound and anionic surfactant to a surface and / or water source. Advantageously, the compositions of the present invention are fast acting. [0230] BARDAC 2250 R and 2280 R used in the examples herein are available from Lonza, Inc. and are each double-chain dimethyl ammonium chlorides. Bardac 2250 R contains 50% by weight of didecyl dimethyl ammonium chloride, 10% by weight of ethyl alcohol, and 40% by weight of water. Bardac 2280 R contains 80% by weight of didecyl dimethyl ammonium chloride, 10% by weight of ethyl alcohol, and 10% by weight of water. The structures of various other commercially available quaternary ammonium compounds and raw materials are outlined in Table 2. [Table 2]
[0231] Example 1 Dynamic surface tension of Bardac 205M and anionic surfactants The SITA science line t60 measures the dynamic surface tension of liquids up to the semi-static range. An air bubble is generated from a capillary tube with a known radius. The bubble pressure is measured as a function of the bubble lifetime and can be correlated to the surface tension according to the Young-Laplace equation. Dynamic surface tension provides insight into the dynamic behavior of surfactants and other surface active compounds under dynamic conditions, i.e. how quickly the surfactant can reach the surface. The dynamic surface tension behavior of surfactants is particularly important in applications where a fast response of the surfactant is required, e.g. short rinse cycles in automated dishwashing. Equipment and materials: 1.SITA T60(Sita Messtechnik,Germany) 2. Oil bath with stirring bar 3. Heating and Stirring Plate 4. Glass beaker 5. Glass vial (20 mL)
[0232] The SITA science line t60 was calibrated with DI water. The clean water sample after calibration should have a surface tension of 72.0±1.0 mN / m (quality and temperature dependent). Following calibration, the SITA was programmed to take measurements at the desired time intervals (i.e. 0.3, 1.6, 3.0, 9.1 seconds). To measure the effect of a 9:1 mass ratio of quaternary ammonium compound to anionic surfactant on surface activity, the following composition was prepared:
[0233] Bardac 205M is a quaternary ammonium compound available from Lonza, having 20% by weight of active alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride, 15% by weight of octyl decyl dimethyl ammonium chloride, 6% by weight of dioctyl dimethyl ammonium chloride, and 9% by weight of dodecyl dimethyl ammonium chloride. The Bardac 205M quaternary ammonium compound blend further includes the following inactive ingredients: 10% by weight of ethyl alcohol and 40% by weight of water. The samples in this example were prepared using 100 ppm of Bardac 205M. Bardac 205M was compared with Plurafac SL-42 (a comparative nonionic surfactant available from BASF - ethoxylated, propoxylated C6 to C10 extended chain surfactant anionic surfactant), Surfonic PEA (an amine surfactant (neutral or cationic depending on pH) available from Huntsman Chemical - a comparative ethoxylated ether amine), X-AES (an anionic surfactant available from Huntsman Chemical), 12~14 -(PO) 16 -(EO)2-sulfate), SLES (anionic surfactant-sodium lauryl ether sulfate), and Marlowet 4539 (C9-alcohol polyethylene glycol ether carboxylic acid available from Sasol) were mixed in a 9:1 mass ratio.
[0234] Transfer 10-15 mL to a 20 mL vial and incubate at 72 °C (160 °C). oF) were immersed in an oil bath heated to 72.0 ± 1.0 mN / m. The samples were allowed to equilibrate for 10-15 minutes. The samples were individually removed from the oil bath and tested in the SITA. After each sample was tested, the SITA cleaning procedure was performed and then the surface tension of the DI water was checked to ensure the SITA had been properly cleaned. If the DI water measurement was not within the range of 72.0 ± 1.0 mN / m, the cleaning procedure was performed again. o The surface tension (mN / m) at F versus bubble lifetime was recorded and the experimental data is provided in Figure 1.
[0235] The results shown in Figure 1 indicate that for most of the quaternary ammonium salt-anionic surfactant blends tested, an increase in dynamic surface activity is observed. As mentioned throughout the examples, the increase in dynamic surface activity is indicated by the decrease in surface tension over the course of bubble life shown in the figures. Specifically, Bardac 205M + Marlowet 4539 and Bardac 205M + Colatrope INC showed a significant increase in surface activity compared to Bardac 205M alone. Interestingly, the quaternary ammonium salt-nonionic surfactant blends, Bardac 205M + Plurafac SL-42, and Bardac 205M + Surfonic PEA, showed only mild synergistic effects. Meanwhile, Bardac 205M with either X-AES or SLES (both of which are longer alkyl alkoxylated sulfates) does not show the synergistic enhancement of surface activity observed with other quaternary ammonium salt-anionic surfactant blends.
[0236] Example 2 Dynamic surface tension of Bardac 205M and anionic sulfate surfactant blends. To further examine the surface activity of mole:mole ratios of quaternary ammonium compounds to different anionic sulfate surfactants, the procedure described in Example 1 was followed. The Bardac 205M described above was treated with SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate), SLES (sodium lauryl ether sulfate), X-AES (C 2010 available from Huntsman Chemical) and 1,2-diamino-2,4-diphenyl-2,5-diphenyl-1,5-diphenyl-2,6-diphenyl-2,7-diphenyl-2,8-diphenyl-2,9-diphenyl-2,10-diphenyl-2,10-diphenyl-2,2 ...2-diphenyl-2,2-diphenyl-2,2-diphenyl 12~14-(PO) 16 -(EO)2-sulfate), and Stepanol EH-S (sodium 2-ethylhexyl sulfate available from Stepan) in a mole:mole ratio. The results are shown in FIG.
[0237] The results shown in Figure 2 demonstrate that the combinations exhibit chain-length dependent surface activity compared to the quaternary ammonium compound (Bardac 205M) alone (at this molar ratio). For example, Bardac 205M in combination with EH-S or X-AES or NAS-FAL all exhibited a rapid increase in surface activity. On the other hand, the Bardac 205M, SLS, or SLES blends provided an overall increase in surface activity compared to Bardac 205M alone, but exhibited slower kinetics compared to the other blends tested, indicating inactivation of antimicrobial activity.
[0238] Quaternary ammonium compounds themselves have excellent micro-effects, but they are not surface active. When a quaternary ammonium compound is paired with a suitable anionic surfactant, the combination is more surface active than the two individually. The synergistic effect in antimicrobial efficacy activation correlates very well with the synergistic effect in dynamic surface tension. Without being bound by theory, we believe that the complex or ion pair between the quaternary ammonium salt and the anionic surfactant due to charge neutralization has a very similar effective cross-sectional area for both hydrophilic and hydrophobic molecules, making stacking at the interface very favorable unless they are no longer soluble. Complex formation is so favorable that it can overcome the cohesive forces between fatty acid molecules.
[0239] Example 3 Dynamic surface tension of mole-molar ratios of Bardac 205M to anionic carboxylate surfactants The dynamic surface tension of the molar:molar ratio of quaternary ammonium compounds to different anionic carboxylate surfactants was tested according to the procedure of Example 1. The following solutions were prepared: Bardac 205M at a concentration of 100 ppm as described above was mixed with 48 ppm ethylhexyl acid, 52 ppm Colatrope INC (a sodium alkanoate available from Colonial Chemical Inc.), 48 ppm octanoic acid, 116 ppm Marolwet 4539 SLS (a C9-alcohol polyethylene glycol ether carboxylic acid available from Sasol), 56 ppm decanoic acid, and 65 ppm lauric acid in a molar:molar ratio, respectively. These data are shown in Figure 3.
[0240] The results shown in Figure 3A demonstrate that the combination of a carboxylated anionic surfactant and a quaternary ammonium compound has reduced surface activity compared to the quaternary ammonium compound (Bardac 205M) alone. The combination of Bardac 205M with decanoic acid appears to be particularly suitable for increasing dynamic surface activity compared to Bardac 205M alone. As seen in Figure 3A, ethylhexyl acid, Colatrope INC, octanoic acid, Marolwet 4539 SLS, decanoic acid, lauric acid, and oleic acid are all capable of increasing surface activity to varying extents compared to Bardac 205M alone.
[0241] Further dynamic surface tension analysis was performed using the procedure described above. The following solutions were prepared: Bardac 205M at a concentration of 100 ppm as described above was mixed with different concentrations of decanoic acid (10 ppm, 20 ppm, 30 ppm, 40 ppm, 50 ppm, 60 ppm, and 70 ppm) or decanoate alone at 100 ppm. The results are shown in Figure 3B.
[0242] As can be seen from these results, decanoate alone and Bardac 205M alone show limited surface activity. However, when each is combined, a dramatic increase in surface activity is observed. Furthermore, the observed increase in surface activity of the quaternary ammonium salt-decanoic acid blend occurs in a dose-dependent manner. That is, the observed synergistic trend occurs as a function of anionic surfactant concentration.
[0243] Advantageously, medium-chain-length carboxylated anionic surfactants show particularly pronounced interactions with quaternary ammonium salts. In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, decanoic acid is used in the antimicrobial composition. Decanoic acid has extremely low solubility and is a solid at room temperature, but nevertheless dissolves freely with (slightly acidic) quaternary ammonium salts without adding any alkalinity. Also, in a wide range of pH, the complexes formed have very similar strong surface activity, leading to unexpected results. As shown, surface activity is independent of pH.
[0244] Example 4 Dynamic surface tension of combinations of Bardac 205M and anionic sulfate surfactants. The surface tension of molar ratios of quaternary ammonium compounds and different sulfate-based anionic surfactants was examined following the procedure outlined in Example 1. The following solutions were prepared: Bardac 205M at a concentration of 100 ppm as described above was mixed with 84 ppm each of SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate), NAS-FAL (sodium n-octanesulfonate), and Stepanol EH-S (sodium 2-ethylhexyl sulfate available from Stepan) in a molar:molar ratio. These data are shown in Figures 4A, 4B, and 4C, respectively.
[0245] The results shown in Figure 4A demonstrate that a mole:molar combination of sodium lauryl sulfate and quaternary ammonium Bardac 205M exhibits reduced dynamic surface tension compared to either the quaternary ammonium compound or the anionic surfactant alone. Interestingly, when viewed in combination with the results in Figures 4B and 4C, the Bardac 205M+SLS blend exhibits a slower decrease in surface tension over the first half of the bubble life, followed by a more rapid decrease in surface tension over the second half of the experiment.
[0246] The results shown in Figure 4B are consistent with those in Figure 4A and demonstrate that the mole:molar combination of sodium n-octanesulfonate and the quaternary ammonium Bardac 205M exhibits a synergistic trend with respect to reduced surface tension compared to either the quaternary ammonium compound or the anionic surfactant alone. In contrast to the results in Figure 4A, a rapid decrease in surface tension is observed.
[0247] The results shown in Figure 4C are consistent with the observations seen in Figures 4A and 4B. As seen in Figure 4C, the mole:molar combination of sodium 2-ethylhexyl sulfate and quaternary ammonium Bardac 205M also shows a synergistic reduction in surface tension compared to either the quaternary ammonium compound or the anionic surfactant alone. Furthermore, the kinetics of the reduction in surface tension observed in Figure 4C are similar to the kinetics shown in Figure 4B.
[0248] Example 5 pH studies of quaternary ammonium-anionic surfactant compounds To determine the effect of pH on the observed synergistic enhancement of interfacial activity between a molar:molar ratio of a quaternary ammonium compound and a carboxylate-based anionic surfactant, the procedure outlined in Example 1 was used, except that solutions were prepared at various pHs. Bardac 205M quaternary ammonium was mixed with Marlowet 4539 (a C9-alcohol polyethylene glycol ether carboxylic acid available from Sasol) on a molar:molar basis. The pH of the combination was adjusted using HCl and surface tension of the combination at 4.0, 6.0, 9.0, and 9.5, and a comparison was plotted against 100 ppm Bardac 205M and 116 ppm Marlowet 4539. The results are shown in Figure 5A.
[0249] The data demonstrate that the synergy observed between Bardac 205M and Marlowet 4539 is maintained at various pHs. The surface tension of solutions of Bardac 205M in combination with Marlowet 4539 decreases at a similar rate regardless of pH. However, pH does appear to affect the surface tension of Marlowet 4539 solutions alone, as solutions at pH 4.5 were more surface active compared to solutions at pH 10.0.
[0250] Further testing of the effect of pH on the dynamic surface tension of a molar:molar combination of 100 ppm Bardac 205M quaternary ammonium compound and 56 ppm decanoic acid was performed as described above. The pH of the combination was adjusted and the dynamic surface tension of the combination was observed at pH 3.6, 4.94, 6, 7, 7.75, 9, and 10.2. Results showing that the dynamic surface tension of the molar:molar combination of quaternary ammonium and decanoic acid was independent of pH are provided in FIG. 5B. Thus, as the pH was changed, the dynamic surface tension did not change. An observation consistent with the data shown in FIG. 5A.
[0251] Example 6 Antimicrobial Effectiveness of Quaternary Anionic Surfactant Compositions The antimicrobial efficacy of quaternary ammonium compounds in conjunction with anionic surfactants is shown in FIG. 6A utilizing an antimicrobial suspension test. The combinations include 7.5 to 1 mass ratios of 300 ppm active Bardac 205M combined with each of SLS, SLES, X-AES, NAS-FAL, ethylhexyl-sulfate (EH-S), Colatrope INC, and M4539. The same anionic surfactants were combined in a mole to mole ratio with 300 ppm Bardac 205M. Bardac 205M is commercially available from Lonza and has 20% by weight active alkyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride, 15% by weight octyldecyldimethylammonium chloride, 6% by weight dioctyldimethylammonium chloride, and 9% by weight dodecyldimethylammonium chloride. Bardac 205M quaternary ammonium compound blend further contains the following inactive ingredients by weight: 10% ethyl alcohol and 40% water.
[0252] The results shown in FIG. 6A demonstrate that a 7.5 / 1 mass ratio of Bardac 205M to SLS, SLES, X-AES, EH-S, and M4539 provided the highest log reduction of E. coli bacteria. Bardac 205M in combination with SLS, SLES, and X-AES also provided good antimicrobial efficacy against Staphylococcus. In addition, data analyzing the mole:molar ratio of Bardac 205M provides that the combination of Cola INC and M4539 shows the highest log reduction against E. coli. The combination of Bardac 205M with NAS-FAL, EH-S, Colatrope INC, and M4539 also provided good antimicrobial efficacy against Staphylococcus. Although quaternary ammonium compositions alone are known to be very good antimicrobial agents, quaternary ammonium compounds are not very surface active compositions, limiting their usefulness as surface active agents such as disinfectants. These results demonstrate that antimicrobial efficacy is maintained in the quaternary ammonium-anionic surfactant compositions while the surface activity of the combination is greatly enhanced compared to the quaternary ammonium compound alone (see Figures 1-4C).
[0253] Further testing of the antimicrobial effectiveness of quaternary ammonium compounds associated with anionic surfactants at pH 8.0 was carried out as described above. The combinations included 300 ppm, 150 ppm, and 75 ppm of active Bardac 205M combined with SLS, SLES, X-AES, NAS-FAL, ethylhexyl-sulfate (EH-S), 2-ethylhexanoate, Colatrope INC, octanoate, Marlowet 4539, and decanoate, respectively, in a mass ratio of 7.5 to 1.Bardac 205M is commercially available from Lonza, and its composition is as described above. The results are shown in Figure 6B.
[0254] The results demonstrate that a 7.5 / 1 mass ratio of Bardac 205M to SLS, SLES, X-AES, NAS-FAL, ethylhexyl-sulfate, 2-ethylhexanoate, Colatrope INC, octanoate, Marlowet 4539, and decanoate provided the highest log reduction of bacteria at 300 ppm of quaternary ammonium compounds. Bardac 205M in combination with SLES and X-AES, 2-ethylhexanoate, Colatrope INC, octanoate, Marlowet 4539, and decanoate also provided good antimicrobial efficacy at 150 ppm of quaternary ammonium compounds.
[0255] Example 7 Antimicrobial Effectiveness of Quaternary Anionic Surfactant Compositions The antimicrobial efficacy of the compositions of the present invention against E. coli is shown in Figure 7. The compositions were tested using combinations of 300 ppm Bardac quaternary ammonium compounds in mole:molar ratios with each of SLS, SLES, X-AES, NAS-FAL, ethylhexyl-sulfate (EH-S), 2-ethylhexanoate, Colatrope INC, octanoate, Marlowet 4539, and decanoate. All test compositions were at pH 8.
[0256] The results shown in Figure 8 demonstrate that the highest log reductions occurred with Bardac 205M in combination with 2-ethylhexanoate, Colatrope INC, and octanoate. The Bardac 205M quaternary ammonium in combination with Marlowet 4539 demonstrated a lesser degree of germicidal activity than the other combinations.
[0257] The results further demonstrate that rather than enhancing antimicrobial efficacy, some interactions act to decrease the antimicrobial efficacy of quaternary ammonium. In particular, with respect to killing E. coli, quaternary ammonium in combination with each of SLS, SLES, X-AES, NSA-FAL, ethylhexyl-sulfate, and decanoate all act to reduce the antimicrobial activity of the quaternary ammonium compounds. The interactions between these anionic surfactants and quaternary ammonium compounds are said to be destructive or demonstrate a "deactivating" effect.
[0258] Without being bound by theory, the present invention demonstrates that the complexes or ion pairs between quaternary ammonium salts and anionic surfactants resulting from charge neutralization have very similar effective cross-sectional areas for both hydrophilic and hydrophobic, making stacking at the interface very favorable, unless they are no longer soluble. The complex formation is so favorable that it can overcome the cohesive forces between fatty acid molecules. This test demonstrates that the stronger ionic bonds found in sulfate or sulfonate anionic surfactants act to neutralize, reduce solubility, and / or inactivate antimicrobial quaternary ammonium compounds. It is also believed that carboxylated anionic surfactants appear to enhance or activate antimicrobial quaternary ammonium compounds due to weaker ionic bonds. Other weakly acidic anionic surfactants, such as phosphate esters, are also likely to act to activate antimicrobial activity.
[0259] Example 8 Antimicrobial Effectiveness of Quaternary Anionic Surfactant Compositions The antimicrobial efficacy against Staphylococcus of quaternary ammonium compounds in association with anionic surfactants at pH 8 is shown in Figure 8. Combinations include a 7.5 to 1 weight ratio of 300 ppm, 150 ppm, and 75 ppm of active Bardac 205M combined with X-AES, ethylhexyl-sulfate (EH-S), 2-ethylhexanoate, Colatrope INC, octanoate, Marlowet 4539, and decanoate, respectively.
[0260] The results shown in Figure 8 demonstrate that 7.5:1 mass ratios of Bardac 205M to X-AES, ethylhexyl-sulfate (EH-S), 2-ethylhexanoate, Colatrope INC, octanoate, Marlowet 4539, and decanoate at pH 8 all demonstrated superior killing properties against Staphylococcus, regardless of the concentration of the quaternary ammonium compound. As noted above, germicidal quaternary ammonium compounds are not very surface active by themselves. The exemplary compositions of the present invention suggest that the quaternary ammonium salt-anionic surfactant complex becomes radically more surface active while maintaining antimicrobial efficacy.
[0261] Example 9 Solubility of Quaternary Ammonium-Anionic Surfactant Compositions Compositions of the present invention were prepared using 1 wt% Bardac 205M solution and molar ratios of sulfate-based anionic surfactant or carboxylate-based anionic surfactant according to the table below, and observed for appearance behavior (e.g., precipitation) in the specimen cup. Each of the resulting combinations was observed to determine whether a single phase occurred, whether the composition was clear or cloudy, and whether precipitation occurred. The results are provided in Table 3. [Table 3]
[0262] Example 10 Antimicrobial Efficacy - Suspension Test The antimicrobial effectiveness of the Bardac 205M-decanoic acid blend against Staphylococcus was evaluated using the Food Contact Sanitizer Test Method at pH 4.0 or pH 8.0 and under the conditions outlined in Tables 4A-4B. The following solutions were tested: 50 ppm Bardac 205M, 50 ppm Bardac 205M + 28 ppm decanoic acid, 75 ppm Bardac 205M, and 75 ppm Bardac 205M + 42 ppm decanoic acid. The results are shown in Table 4C and Figure 9A. [Table 4A] [Table 4B] [Table 4C]
[0263] Using the above procedure, another test was performed to determine the antimicrobial effectiveness of Bardac 205M-Decanoic acid blends against E. coli. The following solutions were tested: 50 ppm Bardac 205M, 50 ppm Bardac 205M + 28 ppm Decanoic acid, 75 ppm Bardac 205M, and 75 ppm Bardac 205M + 42 ppm Decanoic acid. The results are shown in Figure 9B.
[0264] Quaternary ammonium compounds are known to have reduced effectiveness in hard water compared to low water hardness conditions (DI, 5 gpg, 17 gpg). Quaternary ammonium / anionic synergy reduces quaternary ammonium concentration requirements for full EPA effectiveness and under slightly acidic media (pH ~5 or less). Quaternary ammonium / anionic synergy works at universal pH and low concentrations of quaternary ammonium (<50 ppm) without the presence of water hardness.
[0265] Example 11 Antimicrobial Effectiveness – Hard Water The antimicrobial efficacy of quaternary ammonium compounds and anionic surfactants against S. aureus and E. coli was evaluated as shown in Table 5A. A water control, a 1% Bardac quaternary ammonium salt control, and 1% Formulation #1 shown in Table 5B were tested at pH 7.0. [Table 5A] [Table 5B]
[0266] The results are shown in Tables 6-7 below. [Table 6] [Table 7]
[0267] The results shown in Tables 6-7 above confirm that when microorganisms, particularly E. coli, are in suspension, they are difficult to kill by quaternary ammonium salts or quaternary ammonium salt / anionic blends under hard water and neutral pH conditions.
[0268] Additional tests were performed using the procedure above, except that the pH of the solutions was prepared at either pH 7.0 or pH 4.5. The results are shown in Tables 8-9. [Table 8] [Table 9]
[0269] The results shown in Tables 8-9 indicate that the water hardness problem in the suspension test is overcome by making the pH slightly acidic (pH about 4.5). The lower pH favors quaternary ammonium salt / decanoic acid over quaternary ammonium salt alone. Even with 500 ppm water hardness, the effectiveness of quaternary ammonium salt / decanoic acid is radically improved at pH 4.5 compared to pH 7.0, demonstrating that the synergistic quaternary ammonium salt / decanoic acid provides complete kill at 75 ppm quaternary ammonium salt levels compared to less than 5 log kill (no disinfection) for 100 ppm quaternary ammonium salt alone.
[0270] Example 12 Third sink disinfectant The antimicrobial effectiveness of quaternary ammonium compounds and anionic surfactants for use as third sink disinfectants was evaluated as shown in Table 10. [Table 10]
[0271] The results are shown in Table 11 below. [Table 11]
[0272] These results confirm that under 500 ppm water hardness conditions, decanoate (anionic form at neutral pH) "deactivates" quaternary ammonium salts, while decanoic acid (protonated form at pH 4.5) "synergizes" quaternary ammonium salts. However, alcohol ethoxycarboxylate (Emulsogen CNO) does not deactivate quaternary ammonium salts at neutral pH. Without wishing to be bound by theory, we believe that at neutral pH, the carboxyl groups on the outer wall of microorganisms such as E. coli are the primary attraction sites (opposite charge attraction) for quaternary ammonium salts. However, water hardness cations (Ca ++ and Mg ++) are further attracted to them, effectively "blocking" the quaternary ammonium compounds. Decanoate binds to the Ca2+ molecules that are attached to the outer wall of the microorganisms. ++ and Mg ++に The combination of quaternary ammonium salt / carboxylic acid according to the present invention results in even more inactivation, because the quaternary ammonium salt / carboxylic acid can be attracted to the ammonium salt and make them more hydrophobic (e.g., similar to soap scum). In one embodiment, this further confirms why alcohol ethoxy carboxylates perform better than decanoates, because they are less likely to form lime soap. However, when the pH is reduced to about 4.5, some of the carboxyl groups on the outer wall of the microorganism are protonated, opening them up to the quaternary ammonium salt, and even more so to the quaternary ammonium salt / decanoic acid, which is fundamentally more surface active.
[0273] Example 13 Food contact sterilization - hard water pH research Further tests were conducted to analyze the antimicrobial effectiveness of quaternary ammonium salt-anionic surfactant blends at various pH conditions. Compositions according to the present invention (and a control that does not contain both a quaternary ammonium compound and anionic surfactant) and results are shown in Tables 12-13. [Table 12]
[0274] These data clearly show a pH cutoff at approximately pH5. [Table 13]
[0275] These data clearly demonstrated the quaternary ammonium salt / decanoic acid synergistic effect at acidic pH at lower quaternary ammonium salt levels.
[0276] Example 14 Hard Surface Disinfection - Hard Water pH Research Further testing was performed to analyze the antimicrobial effectiveness of quaternary ammonium salt-anionic surfactant blends at various pH conditions with hardness. The compositions (and a control containing neither the quaternary ammonium compound nor the anionic surfactant), conditions evaluated, and results are shown in Tables 14-18. [Table 14] [Table 15] [Table 16] [Table 17] [Table 18]
[0277] As shown in Tables 17-18, the unexpected results show that even in very hard water conditions (15 grains per gallon, or 2565 ppm water hardness), the quaternary ammonium salt / anionic composition combination, as shown for quaternary ammonium salt / decanoic acid, provides a 5 log kill of the more difficult E. coli at as low as 50 ppm di-octyl quaternary ammonium salt levels. This confirms that the quaternary ammonium salt / anionic is highly effective against microorganisms that build up on hard surfaces, even under very hard water conditions and at neutral or higher pH. Sampling from the sump confirms that not only are microorganisms removed from the surfaces, but that they are killed.
[0278] Example 15 High foaming non-polarity ratio research Further tests were performed analyzing the non-molar ratios of the compositions of the present invention. The compositions, conditions, and results evaluated are shown in Table 19. [Table 19]
[0279] These results confirm that molar ratios according to the compositions of the present invention, i.e., many non-molar quaternary ammonium salt / anionic combinations (more quaternary ammonium salt than anionic), pass the 500 ppm water hardness suspension test at both neutral and acidic pH. However, the further the composition is from the molar ratio, the less surface activity benefit there is, demonstrating the pH-dependent tradeoff for desired surface activity / wetting.
[0280] Example 16 Dynamic Surface Tension of Bardac LF80 and Anionic Polymers The SITA science line t60 measures the dynamic surface tension of liquids up to the semi-static range. Equipment and materials: 1.SITA T60(Sita Messtechnik, Germany) 2. Oil bath with stirring bar 3. Heating and Stirring Plate 4. Glass beaker 5. Glass vial (20 mL)
[0281] The SITA science line t60 was calibrated with DI water. After calibration, the clean water sample should have a surface tension of 72.0 ± 1.0 mN / m (quality and temperature dependent). Following calibration, the SITA was programmed to take measurements at the desired time intervals (i.e. 0.3, 1.6, 3.0, 9.1 seconds). To determine the effect of Bardac LF80 and different concentrations of Acusol 445 on dynamic surface tension, the following five solutions were analyzed at pH 7.0: 100 ppm Bardac LF80; 10 ppm Acusol 445; 100 ppm Bardac LF80 + 10 ppm Acusol 445; 100 ppm Bardac LF80 + 30 ppm Acusol 445; and 100 ppm Bardac LF80 + 75 ppm Acusol 445.
[0282] 10-15 mL was transferred to a 20 mL vial and immersed in an oil bath heated to 72 °C (160 °F) ± 2 °C. The samples were allowed to equilibrate for 10-15 minutes. The samples were individually removed from the oil bath and tested in the SITA. After each sample was tested, the SITA cleaning procedure was performed and then the DI water surface tension was checked to ensure the SITA had been properly cleaned. If the DI water measurement was not within the range of 72.0 ± 1.0 mN / m, the cleaning procedure was performed again. The surface tension (mN / m) versus bubble life time at 160 °F was recorded and is shown in Figure 10.
[0283] The data from these experiments demonstrate that Bardac LF80 by itself exhibits slow kinetic surface activity. Similarly, Acusol 445 alone exhibits little surface activity. However, the combination of Bardac LF80 and Acusol 445 is more kinetically active than either of the individual. Additionally, there is an increased synergy between Bardac LF80 and increasing levels of Acusol 445, but between 30 ppm and 75 ppm of Acusol 445, the synergy levels off.
[0284] Further testing of dynamic surface activity was performed to evaluate the synergistic effects of other Bardac LF80 and polymer combinations. Following the procedure outlined above, the surface activity of the following five solutions at pH 7.0 was determined: 100 ppm Bardac LF80; 100 ppm Bardac LF80 + 75 ppm PSO; 100 ppm Bardac LF80 + 75 ppm Acusol 445; and 100 ppm Bardac LF80 + 75 ppm AR-801. These results are shown in Figure 11.
[0285] Consistent with the results shown in Figure 10, the data in Figure 11 clearly show a synergistic effect between Bardac LF80 and the anionic polymers tested (Acusol 445, PSO, and AR-801). The quaternary ammonium salt-anionic polymer solution increased the dynamic surface activity compared to the quaternary ammonium salt solution alone. All three polymers at the concentrations tested were able to increase the dynamic surface activity of Bardac LF80 at a comparable rate.
[0286] To determine whether the observed enhancement of surface activity in the Bardac LF80-anionic polymer solutions was pH dependent, the following solutions were tested according to the above procedure at pH 11.0: 100 ppm Bardac LF80; 10 ppm Acusol 445; 100 ppm Bardac LF80 + 10 ppm Acusol 445; 100 ppm Bardac LF80 + 75 ppm Acusol 445. The results of this experiment are shown in Figure 123.
[0287] As can be seen from this data, a change to pH 11.0 has no observable effect on the surface activity of Acusol 445 alone, whereas the surface activity of Bardac LF80 alone appears to increase at pH 11.0 when viewed in combination with the results in Figure 11. However, a synergistic effect between the anionic polymer and the quaternary ammonium salt is still observed, indicating that the synergistic increase in surface activity is independent of pH.
[0288] Example 17 Dynamic surface tension of quaternary ammonium salts and anionic polymers. The dynamic surface tension investigation of the quaternary ammonium salt-anionic polymer pairs was continued at pH 7.0 as described in Example 16 for the following solutions: 100 ppm Bardac 2250; 100 ppm Bardac 2250 + 75 ppm PSO; 100 ppm Bardac 2250 + 75 ppm Acusol 445; 100 ppm Bardac 2250 + 75 ppm AR-801. The data from this experiment is shown in Figure 13. The results of Figure 13, when viewed in combination with the data of Figure 10, show a fundamental difference for Bardac 2250, demonstrating the difference in surface activity between the C10 and C8 quaternary ammonium compounds in combination with anionic polymers. It is clear that Bardac 2250 appears to be synergized by the smaller PSO and AR-801, but is inactivated by the larger anionic polymer Acusol 445.
[0289] To further test the inactivation of Bardac 2250 by Acusol 445, the procedure of Example 16 was used on the following solutions at pH 7.0: 100 ppm Bardac 2250; 10 ppm Acusol 445; 100 ppm Bardac 2250 + 10 ppm Acusol 445; 100 ppm Bardac 2250 + 20 ppm Acusol 445; and 100 ppm Bardac 2250 + 50 ppm Acusol 445. The results are shown in Figure 14. As can be seen from the data, Acusol 445 shows a dose-dependent inactivation of Bardac 2250 in terms of dynamic surface activity. As the concentration of Acusol 445 increases, the rate at which the surface tension of Bardac 2250 decreases over the bubble life decreases.
[0290] To determine whether Acusol 445-mediated inactivation of the dynamic surface tension of Bardac 2250 is dependent on the pH of the solution, further testing was used following the procedure outlined in Example 16, except that solutions at pH 7.0 and pH 11.0 were compared side-by-side. Specifically, the following three solutions were analyzed: 100 ppm Bardac 2250; 100 ppm Bardac 2250 + 50 ppm Acusol 445 at pH 7.0; and 100 ppm Bardac 2250 + 50 ppm Acusol 445 at pH 11.0. The results are shown in Figure 15. The data demonstrate that inactivation of Bardac 2250 by Acusol 445 is maintained at pH 11.0. The surface tension of solutions of Bardac 2250 in combination with Acusol 445 decreases at a comparable rate regardless of pH. On the other hand, the surface tension of Bardac 2250 alone decreases rapidly over the bubble life.
[0291] The dynamic surface tension of the quaternary ammonium salt-anionic polymer couple was further evaluated using the procedure described in Example 16 to assess the effect of combinations of C8-C10 quaternary ammonium compounds on activation or deactivation. For these experiments, the following solutions were prepared at pH 7.0: 100 ppm Bardac 205M; 100 ppm Bardac 205M + 75 ppm PSO; 100 ppm Bardac 205M + 75 ppm Acusol 445; and 100 ppm Bardac 205M + 75 ppm AR-801 (Figure 16) or 100 ppm Uniquat QAC50; 100 ppm Uniquat QAC50 + 75 ppm PSO; 100 ppm Uniquat QAC50 + 75 ppm Acusol 445; and 100 ppm Uniquat QAC50 + 75 ppm AR-801 (Figure 17). Data testing the Bardac 205M-anionic polymer pair is shown in Figure 16 and the results for the Uniquat QAC50-anionic polymer pair are shown in Figure 17.
[0292] Consistent with the results in Figure 13, the mixture of Bardac 205M is also synergized by the smaller anionic polymers PSO and AR-801. Both PSO and AR-801 in combination with Bardac 205M show a decrease in dynamic surface tension compared to Bardac 205M alone. On the other hand, the larger anionic polymer Acusol 445 had a deactivating effect on the dynamic surface tension of Bardac 205M, albeit a milder deactivation compared to Figure 13. Furthermore, the Uniquat QAC50 solution follows a similar trend, with the smaller anionic polymers PSO and AR-801 showing synergistic surface activity. However, the mixture of Acusol 445 and Uniquat QAC50 shows a mildly deactivated surface activity (Figure 17).
[0293] The combined results of Examples 16 and 17 show that the combination of Bardac LF80(C8) and anionic polymers exhibits synergistic surface activity enhancing properties that are independent of pH or polymer size, while Bardac 2250, Bardac 205M, and Uniquat QAC50 also exhibit synergistic surface activity enhancing effects when mixed with smaller anionic polymers (PSO and AR-801), but show antagonistic trends (i.e., inactivation) as a function of polymer concentration and pH when mixed with the larger anionic polymer, Acusol 445.
[0294] Example 18 Dynamic surface tension of quaternary ammonium salt-chelating agent solutions Using the SITA science line t60 system and the procedure described in Example 16, the combination of quaternary ammonium salt-anionic chelating agent solutions was analyzed. Specifically, the following solutions were analyzed at pH 7.0: 100 ppm Bardac LF80; 100 ppm Bardac LF80 + 10 ppm HEDP; 100 ppm Bardac LF80 + 20 ppm HEDP; 100 ppm Bardac LF80 + 50 ppm HEDP; and 100 ppm Bardac LF80 + 75 ppm HEDP. These results are shown in Figure 18. These results show an increase in the dynamic surface activity of Bardac LF80 combined with HEDP. The synergistic trend appears to be a function of the concentration of the chelating agent, but this is a slight trend.
[0295] Additional quaternary ammonium compounds were tested in combination with anionic chelators according to the procedure outlined in Example 16. The following solutions were prepared and tested: 100 ppm Bardac 2250; 100 ppm Bardac 2250 + 75 ppm Dequest 2000; and 100 ppm Bardac 2250 + 75 ppm Trilon M (Figure 19) or 100 ppm Uniquat QAC50; 100 ppm Uniquat QAC50 + 75 ppm Dequest 2000; and 100 ppm Uniquat QAC50 + 75 ppm Trilon M (Figure 20). Results from the Bardac 2250-anionic chelator combination are shown in Figure 19 and results from the Uniquat QAC50-anionic chelator combination are shown in Figure 20.
[0296] The data from this experiment demonstrates the synergistic surface activity enhancing properties of the quaternary ammonium salt-anionic chelator solutions. For both Bardac 2250 and Uniquat QAC50, increased surface activity was observed when combined with Dequest 2000 or Trilon M. While both anionic chelators were able to reduce the surface tension of all three quaternary ammonium compounds tested (Bardac LF80, Bardac 2250, and Uniquat QAC50), Trilon M produced a consistently lower surface tension over the bubble life compared to the quaternary ammonium salt-Dequest 2000 combination.
[0297] To determine whether the observed synergistic effect of the quaternary ammonium salt-anionic chelator combination was dependent on the pH of the solution, further testing was used following the procedure outlined in Example 16, except at different pHs. The following solutions were analyzed: 100 ppm Bardac LF80 at pH 7.0; 100 ppm Bardac LF80 + 100 ppm Trilon M at pH 3.0; 100 ppm Bardac LF80 + 100 ppm Trilon M at pH 9.0; and 100 ppm Bardac LF80 + Trilon M at pH 11.0. Data from this experiment is shown in FIG. 21. As can be seen from these results, the synergistic trend between Bardac LF80 and Trilon M appears to be independent of pH, as the pH of the solution had little effect on the dynamic surface activity of the solutions tested.
[0298] The combined results of the experiments in Example 18 show that the quaternary ammonium salts (Bardac LF80, Bardac 2250, and Uniquat QAC50) and anionic chelators (Dequest 2000 and Trilon M) exhibit synergistic surface activity enhancing properties when combined compared to the quaternary ammonium salt solutions alone, as seen in Figures 18-20. In addition, the synergistic trends of the quaternary ammonium salts and the anionic chelators appear to be a function of chelator concentration and independent of pH, as shown in Figures 18 and 21, respectively.
[0299] Example 19 Solubility of Quaternary Ammonium Salt-Anionic Polymer Solutions Typical solution behavior was analyzed using 1% quaternary ammonium salt and 100 ppm polymer, and the results are shown in Table 20. [Table 20]
[0300] Further solution behavior with 500 ppm quat and maximum loading of polymer before phase change (precipitation point) was analyzed. Polymer was loaded to maximum concentration (insolubility point). Results are shown in Table 21. [Table 21]
[0301] Results from these experiments showed that the chain length on the quaternary ammonium was shorter, supporting higher levels of polymer incorporation.
[0302] Example 20 Removal of mineral deposits To determine the effectiveness of the quaternary ammonium salt-anionic chelating agent and quaternary ammonium salt-anionic polymer combinations for removing soil from the surface of an object, the following procedure was used: Pre-soiled polypropylene coupons (mineral deposits) were immersed in solutions of water, 50 ppm chelating agent (GLDA), 100 ppm Bardac LF80 + 50 ppm chelating agent (GLDA) using an automated dip tester unit. The solutions were prepared and stirred in separate beakers. The soiled tiles were submerged in beakers of the various cleaning compositions for 10 minutes. The tiles were then visually analyzed to evaluate the cleanliness of the tiles, i.e., removal of mineral deposits. This visual observation of scale removal for the quaternary ammonium salt-anionic chelating agent solution and the quaternary ammonium salt-anionic polymer solution is shown in FIG. 22.
[0303] Using the same automated dip tester unit, pre-soiled polypropylene coupons (mineral deposits) were immersed in solutions of water, 25 ppm Acusol 445, 100 ppm Bardac LF80 + 25 ppm Acusol 445, and 100 ppm nonionic surfactant (Surfonic 12-6) + 25 ppm Acusol 445. Visual observations of scale removal for the quaternary ammonium salt-anionic chelating agent solution and the quaternary ammonium salt-anionic polymer solution are shown in FIG.
[0304] The results show the advantage of using a synergistic combination of quaternary ammonium salts and anionic polymers / chelating agents according to embodiments of the present invention. The combination enhances the soil removal power of the chelating agent and polymer over a non-synergistic non-ionic surfactant combined with an anionic polymer (as shown by 100 ppm of non-ionic surfactant (Surfonic 12-6) + 25 ppm of Acusol 445). Without being bound to a particular mechanism of action or theory of the present invention, the quaternary ammonium salts and anionic polymers / chelating agents form more surface active complexes with the chelating agent or polymer, which effectively seek out scale on the surface through surface excess and / or less charge repulsion mechanisms. Non-synergistic surfactants (i.e., non-ionic surfactants) can improve wetting, but there is no surface excess and / or less charge repulsion of the chelating agent and / or polymer.

Such variations are not to be regarded as departures from the spirit and scope of the invention, and all such modifications are intended to be included within the scope of the following claims. The above specification provides a description of the manufacture and use of the disclosed compositions and methods.
