[0024] 1, in addition to the AVD 12, the system 10 may include one or more other CE device types. In one example, the first CE device 48 may be a computer game console that can be used to send computer game audio and video to the AVD 12 via commands sent directly to the AVD 12 and / or through a server, described below, while the second CE device 50 may include similar components as the first CE device 48. In the example shown, the second CE device 50 may be configured as a computer game controller operated by a player or a head-mounted display (HMD) worn by a player. The HMD may include a head-up transparent or non-transparent display for presenting AR / MR or VR content, respectively.

[0025] In the illustrated example, only two CE devices are shown, but it should be understood that a fewer or greater number of devices may be used. The devices herein may implement some or all of the components shown for AVD 12. Any of the components shown in the following figures may incorporate some or all of the components shown for AVD 12.

[0026] Referring now to the at least one server 52 mentioned above, it includes at least one server processor 54, at least one tangible computer-readable storage medium 56, such as disk-based or solid-state storage, and at least one network interface 58 that, under the control of the server processor 54, enables communication with other devices of Figure 1 via the network 22, and may indeed facilitate communication between the server and client devices in accordance with the present principles. It should be noted that the network interface 58 may be, for example, a wired or wireless modem or router, a Wi-Fi transceiver, or other suitable interface, such as, for example, a wireless telephone transceiver.

[0027] Thus, in some embodiments, server 52 may be an entire Internet server or server "farm" and may include and perform "cloud" functionality such that, for example, in an exemplary embodiment for a network gaming application, devices of system 10 may access the "cloud" environment via server 52. Alternatively, server 52 may be implemented by one or more game consoles or other computers located in or near the same room as the other devices shown in FIG.

[0028] The components shown in the following figures may include some or all of the components shown in Figure 1. The user interfaces (UIs) described herein may be integrated and / or extended, and UI elements may be mixed and matched between UIs.

[0029] 2 illustrates a display 200, such as any display described herein, e.g., a TV on which a video game is presented, presenting a UI 202 under control of a main application ("app"), including, in the non-limiting example shown, a game window 204 presenting video or still images from the respective computer game. Below the window 204 are functionality windows 206 representing respective categories of games, such as "New," "Popular with Friends," "Best Moments" (representing repeated or viewed segments of the game, or representing segments of the game that the user has "liked"), and "Trophy Time," representing games or game segments in which the user or other users have won prizes.

[0030] The UI 300 shown in Figure 3 may be presented on the display 200 automatically or in response to a user selection. In the non-limiting example of Figure 3, a character window 302 is shown in which characters from a computer game appear as still or animated images. The user may select the clips to be presented or the clips may be automatically selected for the user. The user may select a character from the game to be modified or the character may be automatically selected for the user.

[0031] Also, a scannable code (SC) 304 appears, such as a Quick Response (QR) code, or a barcode, or other code, that can be scanned by a camera on a user device, such as a smartphone. A prompt 306 may also be displayed to encourage the user to scan the code for a particular purpose, in the example shown, to upload a photo of the user (a "selfie") for purposes described immediately below.

[0032] Indeed, turning now to Figure 4, in block 400, a user operating a user device, such as a phone, for example, operates the camera on the phone to scan the code 304 shown in Figure 3. This causes the phone to open an application, referred to herein as the "Selfie App," which is a web app for allowing a photo taken by the user himself in block 404 to be uploaded to a server, such as server 52 shown in Figure 1, when the user selects the "Upload" button on his phone presented by the Selfie App in block 406. Scanning the code essentially invokes a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) for a Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) web page hosted by the mobile phone, the server, or a combination of the two.

[0033] The server receives the user's image and in block 408 modifies the face, and optionally the body, of the character shown in 302 of FIG. 3 according to the user's image. In other embodiments, the user device modifies the face, and optionally the body of the character. In other embodiments, the server modifies the face and / or body in cooperation with the user device. In some embodiments, the user may provide input to determine whether the game or clip should be presented with low or high quality animation, and therefore take less or more time, respectively, to modify with the user's face.

[0034] As a non-limiting example, a Python script known as "Faceswap" may be used, where the library takes an original video and merges a selfie with a face in the video.

[0035] In a non-limiting example, an image of a user may be blended with an image of a game character. Blending may be accomplished using any suitable blending algorithm. For example, blending of the user image and the character image may be done using a bitmap and averaging corresponding bits to produce an average image, using a layer mask, or using alpha blending, where the composition of the two images is derived from combining pixel color values based on pixel transmittance (alpha) values, typically on a pixel-by-pixel basis. Blending may be of facial features only, or may be done by blending a full-body image of the user with a full-body image of the character.

[0036] Figure 5 illustrates a UI 500 that may be presented on the display 200 in which a still or animated image 502 of a game character is displayed side-by-side with an image 504 of the user that was uploaded to the server in block 406 of Figure 4. Then, after the operations in block 408 of Figure 4, a UI 600 may be presented on the display 200 showing a game character 602 modified according to the image of the user, such that at least the face of the character 602 is based on the image of the user. A game may be executed with the character 602 moving under the control of a game controller, as per the game program, except that the face of the character appears to be the face of the user.

[0037] The UI 600 may also present a second code 604 that may be scanned to share an image of the game character 602 modified according to the user's image. A prompt 606 may be presented to this effect.

[0038] Thus, in block 700 of Figure 7, a user may operate their device, such as a phone, to scan the code 604 shown in Figure 6. This causes, in block 702, the user device to open the sharing app shown in Figure 8.

[0039] More specifically, FIG. 8 illustrates a user device 800 that has scanned the code 604 of FIG. 6 and, as a result, presented a UI 802 in accordance with a share app. The UI 802 presents a scene 804 from a computer game along with a title 806 of the game and a share selector 808. Selecting the share selector 808 may cause the UI 900 shown in FIG. 9 to be displayed on the user device 800. The UI 900 may include a prompt 902 to check out the video, below which may be selectors 904, each selectable to select a recipient, such as a friend, from a friends list stored on the device 800. A send mode selector 906 may be selected to specify a send mode to the friend selected using the selector 904. Non-limiting send modes may include, for example, an instant message or other type of phone message, sending via a web browser, etc.

[0040] Once the user has selected the recipient(s) and transmission mode, the recipient's network address or email address or phone number appropriate for the selected transmission mode is accessed and the data is associated with the recipient and transmitted to device 1000 shown in Figure 10. The receiving device 1000 presents a scene 1002 of the computer game displaying the game characters modified according to the user's image, as shown at 602 in Figure 6. The title 1004 of the game and / or character may be presented along with the name 1006 of the sending user.

[0041] Figure 11 encapsulates the techniques discussed above. A main app 1100 retrieves video at 1102 from a server 1104, such as server 52 shown in Figure 1. Game video may be presented on the display 200 shown in Figure 2 and described above. A user uses his / her device 800 to scan a first code 304, as shown at 1106, executes the selfie app, and sends an image of the user to the server, as shown at 1108.

[0042] In response, the server sends the image to the display 200 for presentation, as indicated at 1110. The user image and ID of the game animation in which the character has been modified are exchanged between the server and the display, as indicated by arrow 1112. Thus, the display obtains the modified animation with the character modified according to the user image, as indicated at 1114, and presents the second code 604 that is scanned by the user device 800 to invoke the shared app, as indicated by arrow 1116.

[0043] The above techniques may be performed in real-time or non-real-time. Text entered by the user and audio spoken by the user and picked up using a microphone may be morphed onto a game character, as further described below.

[0044] 12 illustrates a display 1200, such as any display herein, including, for example, a display of a user device that can present a UI 1202. In the non-limiting example shown, the UI includes an image 1204 of a game character provided by a game designer or modified to have the user's face in accordance with the disclosure above.

[0045] A prompt 1206 may be presented to allow the user to change the game's native dialogue associated with the character 1204 to use the user's name (by selecting selector 1208) or another fanciful name entered by the user (by selecting selector / input field 1210). Thereafter, when the game and / or selected clips of the game are presented, the dialogue played over the audio speakers is changed so that whenever the character's 204 native name is uttered, the name selected by the user is played instead.

[0046] 13 illustrates a display 1300, such as any display herein, including, for example, a display of a user device that can present a UI 1302. In the non-limiting example shown, the UI includes an image 1304 of a game character provided by a game designer or modified to have the user's face in accordance with the disclosure above.

[0047] A prompt 1306 may be presented to allow the user to create a .gif file, for example, by selecting a selector 1308. In response, the clip is converted to an image file in .gif format.

[0048] FIG. 14 illustrates a display 1400, such as any display herein, including, for example, a display of a user device that can present a UI 1402. In the non-limiting example shown, the UI includes an image 1404 of a game timeline from a start (left side) to an end (right side), with a number of frames 1406 in the timeline being times that will be displayed in the game when played as a video. A slider 1408 may be provided that can be moved left or right along the timeline as indicated by dashed arrow 1410 to select a frame 1406 at which to start a clip as described in FIGS. 1-11 above. A stop frame may also be selected to select the end of the clip.

[0049] FIG. 15 illustrates that a palette can be provided to allow the end user to modify the visual attributes of a character's face.

[0050] 15 illustrates a display 1500, such as any display herein, including, for example, a display of a user device that can present a UI 1502. In the non-limiting example shown, the UI includes an image 1504 of a game character provided by a game designer or modified to have the user's face in accordance with the disclosure above.

[0051] A color selector 1506 may be provided that may be selected by a user to define a facial color of the character 1504. An age selector 1508 may be provided that may be selected by a user to define an age of the character's 1504 face (such that when a lower age is selected a first number of wrinkle lines are imposed on the face, when a higher age is selected a second number of wrinkle lines greater than the first number are imposed on the face, with more wrinkle lines indicating a higher age, etc.).

[0052] 16 illustrates a display 1600, such as any display herein, including, for example, a display of a user device that can present a UI 1602. In the non-limiting example shown, the UI includes an image 1604 of a game character provided by a game designer or modified to have the user's face in accordance with the disclosure above.

[0053] The UI 1602 may include a selector 1606 that can be selected to allow a user to dub the dialogue spoken by the character with the user's voice. The user may record a clip of their voice, as shown at 1608, for example, by a microphone on the user device. The voice characteristics of the recorded voice are used to modify the voice of the character 1604.

[0054] Also, if desired, the user may select selector 1610 to have the character 1604 speak the game's native game dialogue, but in the user's voice if desired, or select selector 1612 to have the character 1604 speak user-created dialogue. User-created dialogue may be created by either selecting selector 1614 to direct the desired dialogue into the user device's microphone, or by entering text 1616 which will be converted to voice and used in the dialogue of character 1604 or other characters.

[0055] 17 illustrates that an end user can select a template, scale text, highlight and animate words, and align text to a portion of a video clip. More specifically, a display 1700, such as any display herein, including, for example, a display of a user device capable of presenting a UI 1702, can include an image of a game character provided by a game designer or an image of a game character modified to have a user's face in accordance with the disclosure above.

[0056] The UI 1702 may include a text size selector 1704, allowing the user to select the size and optionally the position of text that is presented on the display during gameplay, as entered by the user or received from a friend. The UI 1702 may also include an animation selector 1706, allowing the user to define which text terms are animated, colored, or otherwise highlighted during gameplay, including types of words and specific words themselves, as defined by the user in field 1708.

[0057] Machine learning can be used to bring friends together, where a game console can, for example, capture video of a period of a game where a trophy was won and share the video among friends on the user device's friends list.

[0058] Although particular embodiments are shown and described in detail herein, it should be understood that the subject matter encompassed by the present invention is limited only by the scope of the claims.
