Abstract
Description
[Technical field]
[0001] The present invention relates to a method for applying a fragrance to a fabric, comprising the steps of: (i) providing a composition comprising or consisting of one or more fragrance compounds and at least one polyol ester of formula (I) as defined below; (ii) contacting the composition from step (i) with the fabric; and (iii) optionally drying said fabric. Furthermore, the present invention provides a fragranced object obtained or obtainable by the method according to the invention, a composition comprising or consisting of one or more fragrance compounds and at least one polyol ester of formula (I) as defined below, a product comprising a composition according to the invention, and the use of a polyol ester of formula (I) as defined below to enhance the fixation of a fragrance on a fabric. [Background technology]
[0002] By definition and function, rinse-off products for laundry or personal care applications are ineffective at depositing fragrance onto substrates such as clothing (synthetic or natural) and human skin. Traditionally, some of the fragrance is deposited, but the majority is washed off with the product during use. Those skilled in the perfumery arts can essentially design fragrances in a variety of ways, but are limited to a few olfactory spaces. Depositing more fragrance onto a substrate increases the fragrance strength, fragrance quality, and the myriad of ancillary benefits that the fragrance imparts, including, but not limited to, malodor neutralizing activity, cosmetic benefits, and / or antimicrobial properties.
[0003] Microencapsulation techniques offer improved retention of fragrances on fibers, but fragrance microcapsules can be very costly, have limited hedonic directionality due to interactions with the capsule shell wall material, and raise microplastic concerns.
[0004] The benefits of more fragrance fixation are clear to consumers in that extended fragrance longevity, increased intensity and hedonic profile are key drivers of purchase and repurchase intent, providing a superior in-use experience.
[0005] US Patent No. 5,399,633 discloses emulsions of organopolysiloxanes containing beneficial agents, such as fragrances, which promote increased deposition and retention of the beneficial agents on target surfaces, such as fabrics, skin or hair.
[0006] US Patent No. 5,999,333 relates to a structured premix or "delivery vehicle" composition for personal care products, which is designed, inter alia, as a carrier to enhance the benefit of hydrophobic beneficial agents, such as perfumes, with enhanced retention. The hydrophobic beneficial agents may be entrapped within the network structure formed by the premix composition. The structuring material may be, for example, a crystalline wax, hydrogenated oil, or fat.
[0007] US Patent No. 5,399, 677 describes a rinse-off personal care composition comprising perfume polymer particles, which is useful as a system for delivering perfume ingredients to the skin or hair. The perfume polymer particles comprise an anionic polymer and a perfume. Polymer-entrapped fragrances for personal care and cleaning products are disclosed in US Patent No. 5,399, 677. Polyacrylic acid microcapsules according to US Patent No. 5,399, 677 are used in conditioners to increase the deposition of beneficial agents such as perfume on hair.
[0008] US Patent No. 5,399,633 relates to a perfume-containing bar composition having enhanced perfume longevity and a process for enhancing perfume retention / longevity, which is enhanced by keeping the amount of soluble surfactant below a maximum of 35% by weight, according to US Patent No. 5,399,633.
[0009] US Patent No. 5,399,633 discloses a fabric care composition containing a glyceryl triester as a fabric care softening agent. In addition, the patent discloses a composition containing a sucrose ester and polymeric primary and secondary amines as perfume fixing aids for enhanced perfume longevity.
[0010] US Pat. No. 5,399,633 describes glycerol triesters that have improved absorption of fragrances into clothing.
[0011] US Patent No. 5,399,633 discloses the preparation and use of C8 chain length glycerol monoesters in microcapsule applications to modulate the vapor pressure of aroma molecules upon evaporation of the aroma molecules from substrates such as meat.
[0012] Despite previous efforts to increase the deposition of fragrances onto substrates, there remains a need for new methods and compositions that can enhance the deposition of fragrances, especially those that are notoriously difficult to deposit. [Prior art documents] [Patent documents]

[0014] It was therefore an object of the present invention to provide a composition, in particular a composition in the form of a rinse-off product, which is able to fix a sufficient amount of fragrance(s) to the composition, in particular to the fabric, thereby further exploiting the fragrance as well as its beneficial properties, such as antibacterial properties.
[0015] In particular, the composition should be capable of imparting a long-lasting fragrance to fabrics during operations such as washing, and the fragrance is not significantly lost during rinsing or drying.
[0016] The composition should also be capable of fixing a sufficient amount of a difficult to fix fragrance.
[0017] The above object is met by a method for imparting fragrance to a fabric, comprising or consisting of the following steps: (i) providing a composition comprising or consisting of one or more fragrance compounds and at least one polyol ester of formula (I);
[0018] [ka]
[0019] wherein R1, R2, R4 and R5 are independently selected from H, methyl and ethyl; R3 is methyl or ethyl, preferably ethyl; each n is independently 0, 1, or 2; R6 to R8 are independently selected from H, OH, and R9COO-; R9 is a branched or linear, saturated or unsaturated alkyl group having 8 to 10 carbon atoms; At least two of R6 to R8 are R10COO-; R10 is a straight chain, saturated alkyl having 8 to 10 carbon atoms; Preferably, R9 is a linear, saturated or unsaturated alkyl group having 8 to 10 carbon atoms; Preferably, R6 and R7 are C10COO and R8 is C9COO-. (ii) contacting the composition from step (i) with a fabric; and (iii) optionally drying the fabric.
[0020] Polyol esters are hydrophobic, oil-soluble compounds. When added to fragrances (and subsequently added to consumer rinse-off products), certain polyol esters have been found to fix more fragrance to fabrics than control samples to which no polyol esters have been added. This new and unexpected discovery allows for a new mechanism of fragrance fixation beyond the prior art methods known to those skilled in the art and science of consumer fragrance design. Thus far, polyol esters as defined herein have not been associated with enhanced fixation of fragrances to fabrics, or even the extent of enhanced fixation of fragrances.
[0021] Polyol esters offer advantages over prior art fixatives / fixatives because they are miscible with hydrophobic phases and only minimally partition into the water phase or require aqueous media like most polyquaterniums. Furthermore, this class of molecules does not provide harsh pH environments that may result in, for example, hydrolysis of fragrance esters. Fragrance fixation is non-selective in that only certain types of fragrance ingredients are fixed, but rather the increase in fixation is representative of notes that are not expected to be present on dry fabric, which opens new creative opportunities in terms of fragrance construction and allows new creative possibilities in terms of dry fabric performance. Dry fabric performance using current prior art fixation techniques is limited in that, generally speaking, most base notes and some middle notes are fixed, and at this stage the hedonic profile is limited. However, by including polyol esters as defined herein in fragrances, it has been observed sensorily and measured analytically that top, middle and base notes are more fixed on dry fabric.
[0022] Structurally, polyol esters are formed by reacting fatty acids with polyols such as glycols. Corresponding methods are known to those skilled in the art. Moreover, polyol esters of formulas (I) and (II) are commercially available.
[0023] In one embodiment of the above method, in the polyol ester of formula (I), R1, R2, R4 and R5 are H.
[0024] In another embodiment of the method according to any of the above embodiments, two n's are 0 and one n is 1. Preferably, each n is 1.
[0025] In a most preferred embodiment of the method according to any of the above embodiments, R3 is CH2CH3.
[0026] In one embodiment of the above method, the polyol ester has the formula (II):
[0027] [ka]
[0028] wherein R10 through R12 are independently selected from straight chain, saturated alkyl having 8 to 10 carbon atoms.
[0029] Preferably, the fabric is selected from the group consisting of cotton and synthetic fabrics, especially polyester, spandex, nylon and lycra, and mixtures thereof.
[0030] As can be inferred from the following examples, the method of the present invention can impart a long-lasting fragrance to various fabrics when added to the laundry, and the fragrance remains even during air drying or machine drying in a tumble dryer. Thus, the fragrance can be imparted to, for example, clothing, towels and bed sheets, as well as other materials and / or fibers made from cotton, synthetic or blends thereof. In some embodiments, the method does not include the use of a starch adjuvant, and / or the fabric does not include a starch adjuvant.
[0031] Thus, in the context of the present invention, "contacting" refers in particular to the washing process of the fabric, either by hand or in a washing machine, where the composition of step (i) is added to the wash liquor and is present throughout at least a portion of the washing process. After rinsing to remove soap, the fragrance remains largely fixed, even when using a dryer at higher temperatures. Preferably, the composition of step (i) is contacted with the fabric by incorporating it into a liquid laundry care application selected from the group consisting of laundry detergents, liquid laundry detergents, fabric softeners, liquid fabric softeners, and combinations thereof.
[0032] In one embodiment of the above method, in step (ii), the composition from step (i) is added to water, optionally containing soap and / or fabric softener, and fabric is immersed therein.
[0033] In one embodiment of the method according to any of the above embodiments, the composition further provides conditioning and / or softening benefits to the fabric.
[0034] In addition to imparting fragrance, the composition provided in step (i) of the method according to any of the above embodiments may also provide conditioning and / or softening benefits to fabrics, thus avoiding the further addition of conditioners or fabric softeners.
[0035] In one embodiment of the above method, the composition provided in step (i) has a weight ratio of polyol ester(s) to fragrance compound(s) of 50:50 or less, preferably 25:75 or less, particularly preferably 10:90 or less. In a preferred embodiment of the method according to any of the above embodiments, the composition provided in step (i) has a weight ratio of polyol ester(s) to fragrance compound(s) in the range of 9:91 to 1:99, preferably in the range of 6:94 to 1.5:98.5.
[0036] The present invention allows for the efficient deposition of a wide range of fragrances, particularly fragrance compounds such as those commonly used or designed for liquid laundry detergent or fabric softener applications.
[0037] In one embodiment of the above method, the fragrance compound(s) is selected from aldehydes, ketones, esters, nitriles, ethers, lactones, primary alcohols, secondary alcohols, tertiary alcohols, phenols, hydrocarbons, acetals and essential oils.
[0038] Some highly desirable fragrance compounds or mixtures are particularly difficult to deposit on fabrics in amounts that provide beneficial effects such as fragrance and antimicrobial properties. These compounds or mixtures of compounds are often lost quickly, or only the base and middle notes remain on the fabric, while the top notes are lost, changing the fragrance impression to a simpler one, often less desirable. Thus, the fragrance quality is reduced. Advantageously, by using the method of the present invention, it is also possible to deposit such fragrance compounds or mixtures thereof efficiently, and to provide a long-lasting fragrance (one that does not change much over time).
[0039] Thus, in one embodiment of the method according to any of the above embodiments, the fragrance compound(s) is selected from the group consisting of the compounds listed in Table 1 below.
[0040] [Table 1-1] [Table 1-2]
[0041] [Table 2-1] [Table 2-2]
[0042] The present invention also provides a fragrant fabric obtained or obtainable by a method according to any of the above embodiments.
[0043] Furthermore, the present invention also relates to a composition comprising or consisting of one or more fragrance compounds and at least one polyol ester of formula (I):
[0044] [ka]
[0045] wherein R1, R2, R4 and R5 are independently selected from H, methyl and ethyl; R3 is methyl or ethyl, preferably ethyl; each n is independently 0, 1, or 2; R6 to R8 are independently selected from H, OH, and R9COO-; R9 is a branched or linear, saturated or unsaturated alkyl group having 8 to 10 carbon atoms; At least two of R6 to R8 are R10COO-; R10 is a straight chain, saturated alkyl having 8 to 10 carbon atoms; Preferably, R9 is a linear, saturated or unsaturated alkyl group having 8 to 10 carbon atoms; Preferably, R6 and R7 are R10COO and R8 is R9COO-.
[0046] In one embodiment of the above composition, in the polyol ester of formula (I), R1, R2, R4 and R5 are H.
[0047] In another embodiment of the composition according to any of the above embodiments, two n's are 0 and one n is 1.
[0048] In one embodiment of the composition according to any of the above embodiments, R3 is CH2CH3.
[0049] In another embodiment of the composition according to any of the above embodiments, the polyol ester has the formula (II):
[0050] [ka]
[0051] wherein R10 through R12 are independently selected from straight chain, saturated alkyl having 8 to 10 carbon atoms.
[0052] In a further embodiment of the composition according to any of the above embodiments, the composition has a weight ratio of polyol ester(s) to fragrance compound(s) of 50:50 or less, preferably 25:75, particularly preferably 10:90 or less. [Figure 9]Comparative testing of perfume accords with and without the polyol esters of the present invention is shown. Perfume raw materials were selected and organized into odor keys. Controls were harmonies of each individual odor key accord, and test samples contained the same accords and the polyol esters of the present invention. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS EXAMPLES
[0072] Initial Testing The control liquid fabric softener fragrance was divided into four aliquots, which were dosed with increasing proportions (2.5%, 5% and 10%) of Zelec 887 (polyol ester according to formula (II), commercially available from Stepan Company, Northbrook USA). The control and each test sample containing Zelec 887 were formulated into a commercial liquid fabric softener (All Free & Clear) at a total dose of 1% (w / w). Each sample was washed independently according to normal US washing conditions for fabric softener (2 kg fabric ballast, medium size cold wash water wash load (10 min wash cycle) and one cold water rinse). 35 g of liquid fabric softener is dosed per wash load. The entire fabric ballast was machine dried (high heat for 60 min) or line dried (24 h on drying rack). Polyspandex and cotton were used as fabrics to evaluate the fragrance intensity after washing and drying. For this purpose, each test sample and control was blind coded with a random three-digit number. Trained panelists used EyeQuestion sensory software to rate the fragrance intensity of the blind coded and randomized samples on a linear scale from 0 to 10. A minimum of 10 trained panelists was used to determine statistical significance. The results are shown in Figures 1 and 2. A significant increase in fragrance intensity over the control can be observed at 2.5% and 5% polyol ester dosage. EXAMPLES
[0073] Liquid laundry detergent Based on the initial testing of Example 1, a 2.5% loading (relative to the fragrance composition) of Zelec 887 or EX-1934 (polyol ester of formula (I), commercially available from Lubrizol Company, Wickliffe, USA) was tested on various types of fabrics along with a commercial liquid laundry detergent. The results are shown in Figures 3-6. Combination with polyol esters results in increased fragrance intensity. EXAMPLES
[0074] Liquid fabric softener To determine the longevity of fragrance retention on cotton, liquid fabric softeners with and without 2.5% (by fragrance composition) polyol ester were used under the same conditions as described in Example 1. After washing and drying, the cotton was stored for 7 days. Since the use of fabric softeners is not recommended for synthetic fabrics, this experiment was only performed with cotton. The results are shown in Figure 7. At all stages: initial damp cotton, machine dried cotton and 7-day dry cotton, fragrance intensity was higher in the presence of polyol esters Zelec 887 and Ex-1934 compared to the control. EXAMPLES
[0075] analytical extraction Fragrance components from the fragrance compositions used in Examples 1-3 were quantified in laundered polyspandex and cotton towels for the control and for the control containing 2.5% (by fragrance composition) Zelec 887. This was done by stripping the fragrance components using industry standard solvent extraction of the towels, standards were added at known concentrations, and the analytes (fragrance components) were quantified based on the GC / MS area response of the standards. The list of fragrance components shows that for each sample containing Zelec 887, the concentration of each fragrance component in the towels was higher than for the control. The results are shown in Tables 2 and 3 and summarized in Figure 8. The GC / MS output is the peak where the fragrance component is detected. The area count is the area under the peak for the specific fragrance component, and the total area under the peak is linearly proportional to its concentration. In this experimental setup, the concentration of the internal standard (IS), phenetole, is 100 ppm. The signal from phenetole is 18,453,977 area counts. Formula for component concentration: (Concentration of Phenetole / Area of Phenetole) x Area of Component = Concentration of Component. The table shows that more fragrance was deposited and extracted from the polyol ester test samples than the control (no polyol ester). The increase in fragrance concentration on the fabric directly correlates to the increase in fragrance intensity as expressed in the sensory performance data.
[0076] [Table 3]
[0077] [Table 4] EXAMPLES
[0078] The results of the comparative test of the scented accords with and without the polyol esters of the invention are shown in Figure 9. The perfume raw materials were selected and organized by odor key. The controls were a match of each individual odor key accord and the test samples contained the same accords and the polyol esters of the invention. Each sample was washed independently according to normal US washing conditions for fabric softener (2 kg fabric ballast, medium size cold wash water wash load (10 min wash cycle) and one cold water rinse). 35 g of liquid fabric softener is added per wash load. The entire fabric ballast is machine dried (60 min on high heat). A nylon / lycra blend was used as the fabric to evaluate the fragrance intensity after the wash cycle. For this purpose, each test sample and control was blinded and coded with a random three-digit number. Experienced panelists used EyeQuestion sensory software to rank the fragrance intensity of the blinded, coded and randomized samples on a linear scale from 0 to 10. Tests were repeated at the initial and 7 day dry down time points. A minimum of 10 trained panelists were used to judge statistical significance.
