Abstract
Description
[Technical field]
[0001] The present disclosure relates to multi-modal hair care compositions comprising cationic guar blends and methods for their preparation. [Background technology]
[0002] Hair is a keratinous filament that is subject to a variety of repetitive stresses, including mechanical stress from daily grooming practices (such as frequent brushing and combing), environmental stresses (such as UV exposure), harmful chemical treatments (such as bleaching, coloring, etc.), and burns from the use of heat styling tools. The damaging effects of these exposures often manifest as several types of damage to the hair fiber, including structural deterioration of the cortex, lifted cuticles, split ends, and other damaging effects that often result in further damage and hair breakage. Hair care and hair styling formulators are constantly searching for products with multi-functional benefits that can effectively treat and style hair. Synthetic and naturally derived polymers are widely used to achieve the desired sensory properties in hair care. Hair styling and conditioning products encompass both fully synthetic and naturally derived polymers to provide conditioning and styling benefits. Consumers and formulators are searching for sustainable, environmentally friendly (e.g., biodegradable) and naturally derived solutions. Many traditional synthetic hair care and styling polymers do not meet the sustainability standards provided by governmental and non-governmental organizations. Therefore, there is increasing pressure on hair care and styling product manufacturers to provide formulations that meet the expected care and styling benefits while using naturally derived, sustainable, biodegradable ingredients. The increasing demand for sustainable ingredients has led the hair care industry to move away from using synthetic chemicals and towards biodegradable, naturally derived, plant-based chemicals.Polysaccharides are a class of naturally derived polymers with good substantivity profiles and are typically used in rinse-off formulations, especially shampoos, to provide conditioning and active deposition.
[0003] US Pat. No. 4,061,602, assigned to American Cyanamid Company, discloses conditioning shampoo compositions containing cationic derivatives of natural gums (such as guar) as the active conditioning agent.
[0004] U.S. Patent No. 11,052,033, assigned to Rhodia Operations, Inc., discloses a personal care composition comprising a guar derivative having an average molecular weight of about 250,000 g / mol to about 60,000 g / mol and guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride having a degree of cationic substitution of about 0.20 to 0.30.
[0005] U.S. Patent Application Publication No. 2020-0163861A1, assigned to Rhodia Operations, discloses cationic polygalactomannans containing nonionic hydroxyalkyl substituents, having a Brookfield RVT viscosity of greater than 700 mPa·s at 20 rpm at 25°C and a concentration of 1 pbw in water, e.g., 700-1,200 mPa·s.
[0006] The present inventors have attempted to prepare hair care compositions using naturally derived biodegradable and cationic guar blends. Thus, the applicants disclose cationic polysaccharides traditionally used in rinse-off formulations that provide excellent styling and conditioning benefits to hair. By combining cationic polysaccharides with various molecular weights and degrees of substitution, it is possible to customize the styling and care benefits of the formulation. The combination of polysaccharides with various chemical properties allows the formulator to "dial in" performance and aesthetic properties that are important to the consumer, such as hair stiffness, conditioning, slip properties, humidity resistance, styleability and style durability. In addition, the cationic polysaccharides provide split end repair, protection from thermal and mechanical damage to hair, and a 450% hydrating effect. 0 Helps protect hair from hot flat ironing up to F. [0101] Example 52: High Humidity Curl Retention Test Results Samples from Tables 1, 7, 8 and 9 were subjected to the High Humidity Curl Retention (HHCR) Test (90% relative humidity, 80°F for 48 hours) and the results are tabulated below.
[0102] Methods: Moisture resistance 0.30 g of mousse was applied to clean, damp hair tresses (International Hair Importers; dark brown European, 2.0 g, 1.0 inch wide, 6.5 inch long), rolled diagonally with a 0.625 inch roller, dried under diffuse heat, and equilibrated to 40 RH, 25oC. The rollers were removed and the tresses were hung on a horizontally lined board marked with 0.25 inch lines and placed in a high humidity environment (90 RH, 27oC). An initial measurement of hair length was taken at the base of the curl. Additional measurements were taken over a 48 hour period. Table 21 shows the humidity resistance calculated by the following formula: (Figure 5) (Lo-Lt / Lo-Li) x 100 (at time t) where Lo is the fully extended hair length, Li is the hair length before exposure (initial), and Lt is the hair length after exposure time t. [Table 23]
[0103] Discussion of the test results: The examples provided above disclose the individual samples from Tables 1, 2, 3 and 4; and the guar blends from Tables 7 and 8. Figure 1 discloses the tribological behavior of the individual samples from Tables 1, 3 and 4. Figure 2 discloses the tribological behavior of the individual samples (Tables 1 and 2) compared to the guar blend samples (Tables 7 and 8).
[0104] Figure 3 shows the improvement in hair performance with the blends of the present invention (blends a, b, c) over the individual samples. These multimodal compositions allow for improved curl retention, hold and stiffness variation while providing improved delivery aesthetics such as cushion in the hair and slip through the hair.
[0105] Example 53: Repair of split ends The split end repair benefit was evaluated using an aqueous solution of the blend dissolved in an aqueous carrier. Virgin European hair (6 inches long, 1 inch wide, 6.5g net weight, medium brown, medium density) was used from International Hair Importers & Products. The hair was bleached with Wella Blondor bleaching powder and 40V developer for 35 minutes at 40°C. The hair was rinsed, washed with 12% active SLES-2EO solution, and air dried. Split ends were induced by brushing the hair and blow drying for 2 hours. The tresses were periodically inspected under a magnifying glass to ensure the presence of 20 split end fibers in each tress. Each split end fiber was marked and tagged. Digital photographs of each fiber were taken with a Nikon SMZ 1500 stereo microscope before and after treatment. The damp hair tresses were treated with 0.14g of polymer solution per gram of hair, massaged, combed, and then air dried. Split end repair was assessed using a scoring scale of 1=end split, 0.5=partial split, and 0=no split. After scoring and taking digital photographs, the tresses were combed 20 times with a fine tooth comb, assessed using the above scoring scale, and digital photographs were taken under a stereo microscope. Repair was calculated using the following formula:
number
[0106] Samples from Table 11 were evaluated for split end repair. The results are shown in the graphs of Figures 5 and 6. Samples from Table 12 were evaluated for split end repair. The results are shown in the graphs of Figures 7 and 8. Figure 5 shows an example of a fiber under test using the blend composition. The figures submitted with the application demonstrate the effectiveness of the blends as leave-ins, showing the percentage of repair measured before and after combing after a single treatment. All blends show positive initial split end repair values after one treatment, indicating toughness against mechanical stress (combing). The higher the split end repair percentage, the better the effectiveness.
[0107] Example 54: Protection of hair from thermal and mechanical damage Hair tresses (high density, European, virgin, dark brown, 6 inches long, 1.75 inches wide, 3.5 g net weight) from International Hair Importers & Products were used to evaluate the thermal / mechanical protection provided by the polymer blends. The hair was washed with 12% active SLES-2EO solution, rinsed, and then treated with 0.14 g of polymer solution per gram of hair, massaged, and combed for even distribution. The hair was brushed and blow-dried for 3 minutes using a 2-in-1 hair dryer brush at high heat of approximately 120°C. The cycle of washing, treating, and drying the hair was repeated a total of seven times. After the seven cycles, hair fibers from each hair tress were extracted and analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Images were collected at 2000x magnification at equal intervals along the fiber for each fiber. Figure 10 is an example of the blend compositions of Table 12, showing the thermal / mechanical protection from brushing and blow-drying as compared to the untreated, brushed, and blow-dried controls. Without the blend, significant cuticle lifting, fragmentation, and removal was observed.
[0108] Example 55: Protecting hair from heat caused by hot flat ironing Hair tresses (European, virgin, dark brown, fine density, 6" long, 1.75" wide, 3.5g net weight) from International Hair Importers & Products were used. The hair was washed with 12% active SLES2EO solution, rinsed, and treated with 0.14g of polymer solution per gram of hair, massaged for even distribution, then blow-dried on a cool setting until dry. A flat iron was used at 450 0The temperature was set at 0.5°C to 10°F. Accuracy was ensured with a digital multimeter / infrared thermometer. The flat iron was pulled up and down the tress in 3 seconds, and cycled for a total of 4 minutes of heat exposure. Single fibers were taken from the tress and analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry (TA Instruments Model Q2000). The thermal protection composition of the present invention is an aqueous solution in which the blend is dissolved in an aqueous carrier. The present invention is an improvement to the hair styling process, where the composition of the present invention can protect hair from damage caused by thermal injury. Decomposition of proteins due to thermal exposure results in a decrease in denaturation temperature and denaturation enthalpy. Higher TD (denaturation temperature) and ΔHD (denaturation enthalpy) indicate less damage. As seen in Figure 9, the denaturation temperature (TD) and denaturation enthalpy (ΔHD) of hair treated with blends F, G, J, and K demonstrate an improvement over untreated and heated hair samples, providing protection to the hair texture.
[0109] Sample test conditions: 2° C. / min; 25-160° C.; 10 mg snippet in 50 μL H2O; n = 5. The results are tabulated below and shown graphically in FIG. 9 and FIG. 11. [Table 24]
[0110] Thus, the inventors have observed that cationic guar blends exhibit a wide range of tribological behaviors compared to individual samples, and provide the ability to optimize usage levels, weight ratios, and mw / ds to deliver friction behaviors similar to those of commercial counterparts.Furthermore, the compositions of the present invention that include cationic guar blends are more advantageous than prior art compositions in the following respects: (i) being versatile and working in different forms such as cream rinses, in gel form or as leave-in systems; (ii) helping to improve the organoleptic properties of hair performance properties such as stiffness, light fastness, and humidity resistance; (iii) exhibiting positive initial split end repair values after one treatment and exhibiting toughness against mechanical stress (combing); and (iv) Protecting the hair cortex from thermal damage when exposed to heat, as evidenced by higher denaturation temperature (TD) and ΔHD (denaturation enthalpy) values.
