[0013] Referring first to FIGS. 1-4, reference numeral 10A generally denotes a vehicle mirror assembly in a first configuration configured as a full-screen display mirror and which may include a reflective state and a display state. In the reflective state, the mirror assembly 10A operates as a mirror and reflects light of various wavelengths back toward an intended viewer. In the display state, the mirror assembly 10A relays image data information (e.g., images, messages, or recommendations) based on one or more images captured from one or more image capture components. The mirror assembly 10A includes a partially reflective and partially transmissive element 12 (also referred to herein as a "glass element"), such as an electro-optic device, and a display module 14 (FIG. 6) that is viewed through the glass element 12. The mirror assembly 10A further includes a housing 15 that includes a bezel assembly 16 that shields and supports the glass element 12 and the display module 14. In some embodiments, the mirror assembly 10A may be configured as a conventional mirror (e.g., without one or both of the partially reflective and partially transmissive element 12 and the display module 14) having the bezel assembly 16 described herein.

[0014] The mirror assembly 10A further includes at least one lighting element 18. In some embodiments, the lighting element 18 may include one or more infrared emitters for transmitting infrared wavelengths of light (e.g., in a structured light pattern and / or a flood pattern). The at least one lighting element 18 may be located within the housing 15 and oriented toward the bezel assembly 16. The mirror assembly 10A may further include a camera unit 20 for capturing image data (e.g., one or more images or videos) from the driver's seat of an associated vehicle. The camera unit 20 and the at least one lighting element 18 may utilize the same control system (e.g., PCB, ECU, and / or processor) as the other components of the mirror assembly 10A. The camera unit 20 may include one or more cameras including various image capture technologies, such as night mode, image enhancement, thermal recognition, recording capabilities, wide-angle lenses, and other features. In some embodiments, the camera unit 20 may also be located within the housing 15 and oriented toward the bezel assembly 16.

[0015] 1 and 2, the bezel assembly 16 may be formed of a first material, e.g., glass-filled nylon, a material that is opaque to wavelengths in the infrared spectrum, and / or other materials. The bezel assembly 16 may further include one or more localized regions 22 formed of a second material, e.g., a material that is transparent to wavelengths in the infrared spectrum. For example, the one or more localized regions 22 may be formed of a resin material, such as polycarbonate, polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), or the like. In some embodiments, the material forming the one or more localized regions 22 may be transparent or translucent to a large spectrum of wavelengths, including those in the visible spectrum and the infrared spectrum. An additive, such as a dye, may be mixed (e.g., in a flow state) into the second material, which is substantially absorptive in the visible spectrum and substantially transparent in the infrared spectrum. In some embodiments, the additive may be substantially absorptive (e.g., less than 5% transmission, less than 10% transmission, or less than 15% transmission) to wavelengths less than about 650 nm. In some embodiments, the additive may be substantially transparent (e.g., greater than 50% transmission, greater than 60% transmission, greater than 70% transmission, greater than 80% transmission, or greater than about 85% transmission) to wavelengths greater than about 680 nm, e.g., greater than about 680 nm, greater than about 700 nm, or greater than about 720 nm. Thus, one or more localized regions 22 may be opaque to an observer, but may be substantially transparent to wavelengths in the infrared spectrum. In some embodiments, the dye in another localized region 22 may be color-matched to the surrounding region of the localized region 22 (e.g., the first material). One or more localized regions 22 may each be located adjacent to at least one lighting element 18 to allow the infrared spectrum of light to be transmitted out of the bezel assembly 16 toward the driver's seat. In some embodiments, there may be one localized region 22 for each lighting element 18. In other embodiments, there may be one localized region 22 for two or more lighting elements 18. In some embodiments, camera unit 20 may be located proximate to (eg, rearward of) one or more localized regions 22 to enable capture of images in the infrared spectrum through bezel assembly 16.In some embodiments, camera unit 20 is located within bezel assembly 16, but includes a cover glass, an apparently clear lens formed of plastic, or an exposure aperture, and is not located behind one of localized regions 22. In some embodiments, camera unit 20 is embedded within or otherwise connected to an outer portion of bezel assembly 16.

[0016] Referring now specifically to FIG. 2 , at least one local region 22 may include a front surface 24, a rear surface 26, and a side surface 28 (e.g., an outer periphery). One of the local regions 22 may be located proximate to the front surface 24, the rear surface 26, and / or the side surface 28. In some embodiments, the front surface 24 and the rear surface 26 of the local region 22 are substantially parallel (e.g., within 10°, e.g., within 5°, or parallel). At least one optical element 30 may be located proximate to (e.g., aligned with) each of the local regions 22. For example, the optical element 30 may be located on the rear surface 26. In some embodiments, the optical element 30 may be integral with (e.g., molded or otherwise integrally formed with) the at least one local region 22. In other embodiments, the optical element 30 may be coupled (e.g., connected) to the at least one local region 22. The optical elements 30 may be configured to redirect (e.g., refract) the projected infrared illumination from the lighting elements 18 in a controlled or semi-controlled pattern to direct the light to various areas of the cab. In some embodiments, the optical elements 30 may be further configured to focus (e.g., collimate) the light from the associated lighting elements 18 in a controlled or semi-controlled pattern to focus beams of light to various areas of the cab. In some examples, the optical elements 30 include, for example, an optical cradle ( FIG. 2 ), a prism, a textured surface, a smooth surface, etc. As shown, the optical cradle may define a series of convex or concave structures 32. At least one localized region 22 and associated lighting elements 18 may be positioned to project light through a front surface 24 and / or a side surface 28 of the bezel assembly 16. As shown, the localized region 22 may be positioned along a bottom of the front surface 24 and / or a side surface 28. Thus, in some embodiments, the optical element 30 may redirect the projection of light towards an area within the cab in addition to controlled or semi-controlled redirection (e.g., refraction and / or collimation). In some embodiments, the optical element 30 may further include features such as a lens used in conjunction with the camera unit 20.As described in more detail below, at least one localized region 22 may be molded (e.g., a second shot in a molding process where other portions of the bezel assembly 16 are the first shot) or otherwise mated and coupled (e.g., with adhesives, screws, heat stakes, snaps, and / or other mechanical attachment methods) into an opening 36 defined by the front surface 24, rear surface 26, and / or side surface 28. In some embodiments, the portions of the front surface 24 and / or side surface 28 defined by the localized region 22 may be optically polished. Of course, the bezel assembly 16 and the localized region 22 (e.g., via an additive) may be substantially the same color such that they are indistinguishable by an observer. For example, the bezel assembly 16 and the localized region 22 may be black, red, brown, other colors, and / or combinations thereof. The front surface 24 of the localized region 22 may be smoothly textured (e.g., polished) to prevent optical scattering.

[0017] 3-4, the mirror assembly 10B includes a second structure. In the second structure, the mirror assembly 10B may be configured as a full screen mirror or a conventional mirror having a bezel assembly 16 as described herein. The second structure may include all of the same features, elements, functions, materials, and may be incorporated into the same structure as the other structures. However, the bezel assembly 16 and the one or more localized regions 22 are formed of a substantially coextensive and integral material, such as a material that is substantially transparent to wavelengths in the infrared spectrum but substantially absorptive at wavelengths in the visible spectrum. For example, the bezel assembly 16 and the one or more localized regions 22 may be formed of a resin material, such as polycarbonate, polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), and the like, with additives such as dyes as described above. As shown in FIG. 4, the rear surface 26 of the bezel assembly 16 may be adjacent (e.g., integrally formed or otherwise connected to) one or more optical elements 30, as described above.

[0018] 5A, the mirror assembly 10C includes a third configuration. In the third configuration, the mirror assembly 10C may be configured as a full screen mirror or a conventional mirror having a bezel assembly 16 as described herein. The third configuration may include all of the same features, elements, functions, materials, and may be incorporated into the same structure as the other configurations. However, the mirror assembly 10C is configured to utilize at least one localized area 22 and lighting elements 18 as the user input module 33A of the first arrangement. More specifically, the mirror assembly 10C includes one or more button areas 34 that define a portion of the bezel assembly 16. Each button area 34 includes at least one of the sensors 36 (e.g., infrared sensors) configured to detect the presence of the lighting elements 18 and / or the infrared spectrum of light. The sensors 36 may be located within the at least one localized area 22, on the front surface 24, on the rear surface 26, on the side surfaces 28, or within an area of the bezel assembly 16 surrounding the at least one localized area 22. The button area 34 may be aligned with or adjacent to the local area 22 and defined by the front surface 24. In use, the sensor 36 detects the presence of infrared light reflecting off a user's finger. The closer the user's finger is to one of the lighting elements 18, the greater the detected presence of the infrared spectrum of light by the sensor 36. The full screen display mirror 10C includes a control system (e.g., a primary printed circuit board 50, which may include at least one processor) configured to identify an increased presence of the infrared spectrum of light within one of the button areas 34 and generate a user input associated with the button area 34. In an embodiment in which the mirror assembly 10C is configured as a full screen display mirror, the user input from one of the button areas 34 may generate a signal that causes the control system to generate visual information on the display module 14. The visual information may include a menu 35 having a list of user options. For example, the menu 35 may include user options such as functions associated with the mirror assembly 10C (e.g., what type of visual information is displayed, dimming functions, etc.), functions associated with the vehicle (e.g., audio, heating, overhead lights, etc.), and / or other functions (e.g., opening a garage door, pairing a device, etc.). However, it will be appreciated that in embodiments in which the mirror assembly 10C is configured as a conventional mirror, user input may provide the same functionality without the menu 35, and / or different menus may be generated at locations other than the mirror assembly 10C (e.g., a mobile device, infotainment center, display, GPS, and / or the like). Each button area 34 may be associated with a different user input and function. In some embodiments, each button area 34 includes indicia 37, such as a raised or textured surface, a color, a digital visualization from the display module 14, or a non-digital marking on the glass element 12, to visually inform the user of the location of the button area 34.

[0019] 5A , the user input module 33A in the first arrangement includes button regions 34 located above the lighting elements 18, and infrared sensors 36 may be located on one or both sides (e.g., on opposing first and second sides) of each button region 34 to determine which of the particular button regions 34 has been pressed (or is intended to be pressed). This determination may be based on the detected reflections (e.g., which infrared sensor 36 detects the greatest amount of infrared light). In some embodiments, the control system may be configured to determine the intent to press (e.g., generate user input) a particular button region 34 by a predetermined value of the detected infrared light, a predetermined rate of change of the detected infrared light, other profiles (e.g., double tap, pressing the button region 34 for a certain length of time), etc. The control system may be further configured to identify that one of the particular button regions 34 has been pressed and perform a particular function, as described above, associated with that particular button region 34. In some embodiments, the button regions 34 may include a touch-activated component and may also rely on detection from the infrared sensor 36 as a secondary source of user input. In some embodiments, the local region 22 may be singular and may cover each of the infrared sensors 36 and the lighting elements 18. In some embodiments, the local region 22 may include multiple local regions 22, with each local region covering a particular group of the infrared sensors 36 and the lighting elements 18. For example, the local region may include a pair of local regions 22 located on opposite sides of the camera unit 20, each covering multiple lighting elements 18 and the infrared sensors 36. In some embodiments, the multiple local regions 22 may be configured such that one local region 22 covers only one lighting element 18 and one or more infrared sensors 36.

[0020] 5B, the mirror assembly 10C includes a user input module 33B in a second configuration. In the second configuration, the function and primary operation of the button areas 34 are the same as the other configurations described herein. However, the button areas 34 are each located directly over one of the infrared sensors 36, and the lighting elements 18 are located proximate to the button areas 34. In some embodiments, the button areas 34 of the user input module 33B may be located within the bezel assembly 16 and spaced apart or adjacent to the local area 22, rather than over the local area 22. In this manner, the camera unit 20 may capture infrared illumination without significant obstruction from user interaction.

[0021] 5C, the mirror assembly 10C includes a user input module 33C in a third arrangement. In the third arrangement, the function and primary operation of the button area 34 are the same as the other arrangements described herein. However, each of the button areas 34 is located directly above one of the infrared sensors 36 and one of the lighting elements 18. In some embodiments, each button area 34 includes one of the infrared sensors 36 and one of the lighting elements 18 connected to a common bench structure. In this manner, the infrared sensor 36 and the lighting element 18 can be simultaneously installed in the button area 34. The button area 34 of the user input module 33C can be aligned with one or more of the local areas 34.

Specifically, the rear housing 52 includes retention features for operatively connecting the rear housing 52 to the mid-shield 48, which includes retention features for operatively connecting the display module 14. The bezel assembly 16 and front shield 53 similarly have retention features for operably connecting the bezel assembly 16 and front shield 53 to the display module 14. The retention features generally include snap-fit connections, tab and slot connections, threaded connections, and / or other known retention features. In some embodiments, the mid-shield 48 or other portions of the mirror assemblies 10A-10C may include an ambient light sensor (not shown).

[0024] The display device 44 may generate visual information, such as graphics, images, or videos, through the glass element 12. In some embodiments, the visual information may be related to image data captured by the camera unit (e.g., warnings, recommendations, or images). In some embodiments, the visual information may be related to the user interface menu 35. The display device 44 may be a liquid crystal display (LCD), light emitting diode (LED), organic light emitting diode (OLED), plasma, digital light processing (DLP), or other display technology. The display device 44 further includes a flexible electrical connector 56 that is operatively mechanically and electrically connected to the PCB 50. The flexible electrical connector 56 has a length L sufficient to extend over and wrap around the display module components between the display device 44 and the PCB 50, and a width that extends substantially along the top edge 58 of the display device 44. The ends of the flexible electrical connector 56 may be chamfered to facilitate manufacturing. The flexible electrical connector 56 , when operably coupled to the PCB 50 , aids in securing the components along a top edge 58 of the display module 14 .

[0025] The glass element 12 may include an electro-optic medium 59, which may include a prism type structure or an electrochromic type structure. In a prism type structure, the electro-optic medium 59 may generally include one glass element 12 with a thickness that varies from top to bottom. The glass element 12 may also be any other element having partially reflective, partially transmissive properties. To pass a current through the glass element 12, electrical elements (e.g., bus tape) may be provided on both sides of the element to generate an electrical potential therebetween. The present disclosure may be used with viewing mirror systems such as those described in U.S. Pat. Nos. 9,505,349 and 10,739,591, which are hereby incorporated by reference in their entireties.

[0027] With continued reference to FIG. 6, a glare sensor optic 74 may be provided on the bottom surface of the rear housing 52 in a position to receive light below the glass element 12 and below the display device 44. The glare sensor optic 74 receives light from the headlights of the following vehicle, measures information regarding glare that may be visible on the glass element 12, and communicates this information to the mirror assemblies 10A-10C so that the mirror assemblies 10A-10C can optimize the visibility of the display device 44 through the glass element 12. The optical vertical / horizontal pattern of the glare sensor optic 74 may be symmetric, such that the orientation of the glare sensor optic 74 is not important (e.g., circular shape). The glare sensor optic 74 may also have an asymmetric vertical / horizontal light collection pattern, in which case a keyed feature would be placed in the lens to confirm correct orientation in the mirror assemblies 10A-10C. The glare sensor optic 74 may also be at least partially packaged within the bezel assembly 16 of the mirror assemblies 10A-10C and may have a light guide configured to propagate light to the glare sensor optic 74. The glare sensor optic 74 may also be an imaging element at the rear of the vehicle where a signal representative of the received light is communicated from the glare sensor optic 74 to the mirror assemblies 10A-10C. In some embodiments, the glare sensor optic 74 may include a full-field-display mirror ("FDM") camera and image processing by components on the PCB 50.

[0028] For the purposes of the following description, the mirror assemblies 10A-10C are considered "on-axis" when a line perpendicular to the plane of the glass element 12 extends toward the viewer's eye. The display device 44 is viewed through the glass element 12 such that any glare on the glass element 12 may impede visibility of the display device 44. When the mirror assemblies 10A-10C are on-axis and used during nighttime driving conditions, headlights from a following vehicle (i.e., a vehicle driving behind the vehicle having the mirror assemblies 10A-10C) are captured by at least one image capture device (not shown) located at the rear of the vehicle to capture images of other drivers or environmental conditions. According to one embodiment of the present disclosure, an actuator device 78 is operatively coupled to the mirror assemblies 10A-10C as shown in FIG. 2. When actuated, the actuator device 78 moves at least the glass element 12 off-axis (i.e., away from a straight line directed toward the driver's eye). Typically, actuation of the actuator device 78 causes the glass element 12 to tilt upward to move the mirror to an off-axis position. However, it should be appreciated that the actuator device 78 may be configured to move the mirror in any direction relative to the axis. The actuator device 78 may also be configured to move the display 44 when actuated. The actuator device 78 may also be configured to switch the display 44 on or off. Thus, when the actuator device 78 is actuated to move the mirror off-axis, the display 44 may be switched off. Typically, when the actuator device 78 is actuated, the mirror assemblies 10A-10C rotate with the glass element 12 and the display 44 to maintain a fixed distance relationship with each other. When the actuator device 78 is actuated, the mounting member 40 and the attachment plate 42 do not move relative to the rest of the vehicle. In the illustrated embodiment, the glass element 12 and the display 44 are rigidly fixed to each other and do not move independently of each other. Alternatively, the glass element 12 may be configured to move independently of the display 44.Additionally, when mirror assemblies 10A-10C are being used to provide information to an observer of mirror assemblies 10A-10C, mirror assemblies 10A-10C may include information regarding the field of view, such as a partially transparent graphic overlay or image on display device 44 that is visible on viewing area 64.

[0029] The present disclosure may be used with mounting systems such as those described in U.S. Pat. Nos. 9,244,249, 8,960,629, 8,814,373, 8,201,800, 8,210,695, 9,174,577, 8,925,891, and 9,838,653, and U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 61 / 704,869, which are hereby incorporated by reference in their entireties. Additionally, the present disclosure may be used with rearview mirror package assemblies such as those described in U.S. Patent Nos. 9,316,347, 8,814,373, 8,646,924, 8,643,931, 8,264,761, and 8,885,240, and U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 61 / 707,625, which are hereby incorporated by reference in their entireties. Additionally, it is contemplated that the present disclosure may include bezels such as those described in U.S. Patent Nos. 8,827,517, 8,210,695, and 8,201,800, which are hereby incorporated by reference in their entireties.
