Abstract
Description
Technical Field
[0001] The present disclosure generally relates to skin care emulsion compositions containing clean polymers, and in particular, the skin care emulsion is a stable viscous composition containing clean polymers such as acrylates, taurate copolymers, and clean and natural or natural-derived emulsifiers such as olive oil fatty acid polyglyceryl-3 cetearyl ether.
Background Art
[0002] Some consumers desire skin care products that are effective, quickly absorbed by the skin, and formulated without petroleum-derived ingredients, ethoxylated ingredients, sulfates, parabens, formaldehyde, phthalates, and mineral oil.
[0003] Polymers are frequently used in skin care products to increase the viscosity of the product and can also act as humectants. Many skin care products may contain multiple polymers that can include polyacrylamide, petroleum-derived ingredients (e.g., isoparaffin, petrolatum), and / or ethoxylated ingredients. However, some consumers prefer products formulated without these ingredients and may desire products that meet the requirements for being marketed as "Clean at Sephora" (see Best Clean Beauty Products 2022. Sephora. Retrieved June 13, 2022. From www.sephora.com / beauty / clean-beauty-products, "Clean at Sephora" is a designation by beauty retailers for over 2,000 products as "clean", which in this case means not containing ingredients such as sulfates, parabens, formaldehyde, phthalates, and mineral oil).
[0004] One polymer that can be used in these clean products is a copolymer of acrylate and taurate (e.g., sodium acrylate / sodium acryloyldimethyltaurate copolymer and C15 - 19 alkane and polyglyceryl - 6 laurate and polyglycerin - 6 available as SEPILIFE™ NUDE from Seppic). This class of polymers can provide excellent texture, user experience, and performance, while also meeting the definition of "clean" under the Clean at Sephora standards.
[0005] Polymers are generally supplied as the dispersed phase in oil and are part of the continuous phase of an oil - in - water emulsion. Emulsifiers can facilitate the formation of the emulsion and also assist in maintaining the stability of the product. However, many conventional emulsifiers do not meet the "Clean at Sephora" guidelines and may thus not be preferred by some consumers. Other emulsifiers are not compatible with acrylate and taurate thickener copolymers, and for example, the product does not have a stable emulsion with a silk - like texture that is quickly absorbed by the user's skin. Summary of the Invention Problems to be Solved by the Invention
[0006] Therefore, there is a need for one or more emulsifiers that are compatible with acrylate and taurate copolymers to form a stable emulsion, are non - ethoxylated, and are clean. In some examples, the emulsifiers also need to be natural, natural - derived, and / or biodegradable. Means for Solving the Problems
[0007] A skin care composition comprising: (a) a continuous phase comprising (i) a polymer containing an acrylate / taurate copolymer and (ii) water; (b) a dispersed phase comprising (i) two or more skin softeners, wherein the skin softeners include (1) a liquid skin softener containing an alkane, an ester, a triglyceride, or a combination thereof, and (2) two or more skin softeners containing a fatty alcohol having an average carbon chain length in the range of about 12 to about 22; and (c) an emulsifier containing olive oil fatty acid polyglyceryl-3 cetearyl ether.
Brief Description of the Drawings
[0008] Although this specification concludes with claims that particularly point out and distinctly claim the subject matter of the invention, it is believed that the invention will be more readily understood from the following description in connection with the accompanying drawings.

Embodiments for Carrying Out the Invention
[0009] The skin care composition may contain a synthetic polymer. The polymer can enhance the texture and viscosity of the composition. However, these polymers may contain polyacrylamide, petroleum-derived components, and / or ethoxylated components. Among consumers, there will be those who prefer products that are formulated without these components and are also clean. One polymer that can be used in these clean products is, as shown in FIG. 1, a copolymer of acrylate and taurate, for example, sodium acrylate / sodium acryloyldimethyltaurate copolymer and C15-19 alkanes and polyglyceryl-6 laurate and polyglycerin-6 (commercially available as SEPILIFE (trademark) NUDE from Seppic), such as sodium acrylate / sodium acryloyldimethyltaurate copolymer. Another polymer that can be used is sodium acrylate / sodium acryloyldimethyltaurate copolymer and C15-19 alkanes and lauryl glucoside (commercially available as Natursol (trademark) EMI132 from SNF (trademark)).
[0010] In the skin care composition, the polymer is generally supplied in oil and then inverted to become part of the continuous phase in the water-in-oil emulsion. Especially when the skin care product is a moisturizer having a relatively high level of oil, it may be difficult to form a stable emulsion. The emulsifier can promote the formation of the emulsion and also assist in maintaining the stability of the product.
[0011] However, it may be difficult to efficiently build the viscosity of the composition and select one or more emulsifiers that form a stable emulsion in a product containing a copolymer of acrylate and taurate. Furthermore, many consumers desire clean products that may contain one or more emulsifiers that are natural, natural-derived, and / or biodegradable.
[0012] Also, since emulsifiers are generally used at the lowest levels that provide the desired product viscosity and stability to give the best product performance, it can be advantageous for one or more emulsifiers to be efficient. If an emulsifier is only effective when used at relatively high levels, the product may be difficult to spread and may instead remain as a white layer on the skin rather than being absorbed by the skin. In these cases, the product may feel heavy and / or sticky. Further, it can be advantageous if there is a synergistic effect between the polymer and the emulsifier, which would allow the emulsifier to be incorporated at even lower levels and result in a smooth, lightweight moisturizer with sufficient viscosity.
[0013] The skin care composition can include a range of skin softeners that can soften, moisturize, and / or protect against irritation to the skin and assist in the solubility of various skin care beneficial ingredients. These skin softeners can have a range of polarities, and it may be advantageous to select an emulsifier that is effective in the skin composition system regardless of the polarity of the skin softener.
[0014] Examples B - J (see Tables 1 - 3 below) were made using clean and natural or natural - derived emulsifiers. These examples were compared with Examples A - 1 and 2 (see Table 1 hereinbelow) containing PEG - 100 stearate as the emulsifier currently used in some marketed products. Examples A - 1 and 2 had sufficient viscosities (1082 Pa·s and 842 Pa·s, respectively), which indicates that the emulsifier is compatible with the sodium acrylate / sodium acryloyldimethyl taurate copolymer. However, among consumers, there are those who prefer skin - care products formulated without PEG. Regarding Examples B - J, three emulsifiers (see Examples E, G, and H) had sufficient viscosities (e.g., ≥550 Pa·s) in compositions containing a non - polar skin softener (isohexadecene) and a more polar skin softener (triheptanoin). However, Examples G and H were found to be acceptable to consumers because the compositions not only had sufficient viscosities but also did not have an odor that caused significant discomfort. Example G, using both skin softeners, had a higher viscosity, so among consumers, there may be those who prefer products made with Example G compared to Example H. The emulsifiers in Examples H - 1 and 2 were cetearyl olive oil fatty acid and sorbitan olive oil fatty acid (commercially available as Olivem® 1000 from HallStar®). The emulsifiers in Examples G - 1 and 2 were polyglyceryl - 3 cetearyl ether of olive oil fatty acid (commercially available as Galolive® Bioten from Acme - Hardesty®). Similar emulsifiers containing wax - like esters made from fatty alcohols and fatty acids derived from natural sources having carbon chain lengths in the range of C12 - C22 are thought to be compatible with the sodium acrylate / sodium acryloyldimethyl taurate copolymer. The composition may contain at least 50% natural or natural - derived components, or at least 60%, or at least 70%, or at least 75%, or at least 80%, or at least 85%, or at least 90%.In some instances, one or more components, in addition to being naturally derived, have greater than 60%, or greater than 70%, or greater than 80% natural origin by molecular weight.
[0015] In some examples, the composition can be formulated without, substantially without, or without ingredients such as triethanolamine, ethanol, glyceryl monostearate, sodium hydroxide, sodium chloride, tocopherol, and combinations thereof. Some consumers consider these ingredients to be irritating and / or may cause acne.In some examples, the composition can be formulated without, substantially without, or without silicone.
[0016] Furthermore, the composition may be a physically stable emulsion. The composition is physically stable if there is no phase separation or the viscosity changes by less than 40% when stored in a glass bottle tightly closed with fingers between t=0 (i.e., immediately after the composition is made) and a freeze-thaw cycle in which a sample is kept at -18°C for 24 hours and then returned to room temperature, or stored at 40°C for one month and then returned to room temperature. As used herein, "visual detection" means that a human observer at 30 cm under illumination at least equivalent to the illuminance of a standard 100 watt incandescent light bulb can visually distinguish when the product is separated into two distinct layers in a 2 ounce clear glass bottle by the naked eye (excluding standard corrective lenses or other corrective vision adapted to correct myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism).
[0017] Unless specifically stated otherwise, all percentages are by weight of the cosmetic composition. Unless specifically stated otherwise, all ratios are weight ratios. All ranges include their endpoints and are combinable. Significant digits are not intended to limit the quantities shown or the precision of the measured values. Unless specifically indicated otherwise, all quantities are understood to be modified by the term "about". Unless otherwise indicated, all measurements are understood to have been made under ambient conditions of approximately 25 °C, and "ambient conditions" means conditions of about 1 atmosphere and about 50% relative humidity. All numerical ranges include narrower ranges. The separated upper and lower range limitations are compatible in creating further ranges that are not explicitly separated.

[0066] Test methods Rheology test methods This method provides a suitable means for measuring the viscosity of the compositions of this specification. The equipment used in this method is a rheometer of the TA Instruments brand, or an equivalent. This equipment is set to perform rotational tilt under controlled stress conditions of 0.01 - 2000 Pa for 240 seconds using parallel plates with serrated upper and lower shapes of 40 mm in diameter and a gap of 1.0 mm. The temperature is set at 25°C. The instrument protocol is set to collect 100 data points per decade in a logarithmic distribution and to stop the measurement when the shear rate exceeds 110 s -1 and is set to stop the measurement when the shear rate exceeds 110 s.
[0067] After performing automated gap calibration, a sample of approximately 5 grams is placed at the center of the plate. The plate is positioned to provide a gap of 1.05 mm, and any excess material extruded from the outer edge gap of the parallel plates is carefully removed. Next, the plate is moved 0.05 mm further to give a gap of 1.00 mm and the measurement is started. At the end of the run, the data file is saved for later plotting and analysis. The viscosity is reported in units of Pascal seconds (PaS) as the value at or near a shear rate of 0.10 s -1 and is reported in units of Pascal seconds (PaS) as the value at or near a shear rate of 0.10 s.
Examples
[0068] The following data and examples are provided to help illustrate the skin care compositions described in this specification. The compositions illustrated are provided for illustrative purposes only and should not be construed as limiting the present disclosure, since many variations are possible without departing from the spirit and scope of the present disclosure. All parts, percentages, and ratios in this specification are by weight unless otherwise specified.
[0069] The examples in Tables 1 to 12 below were prepared by the following method. First, an aqueous phase was prepared by combining water with water-soluble components including, but not limited to, glycerin, chelating agents (e.g., disodium EDTA, EDDS), water-soluble skin care active substances (e.g., panthenol), and antioxidants (e.g., hydroxyacetophenone). The aqueous phase was mixed and heated to about 50 °C until the components were in solution and / or dispersed. The aqueous phase may contain about 70% to about 98%, or about 75% to about 95%, or about 80% to about 94%, or about 85% to about 93%, or about 88% to about 92% water based on the weight of the aqueous phase.
[0070] In a second container, an oil phase premix was prepared. The premix included a liquid and waxy skin softening agent and one or more emulsifiers. The premix was mixed and heated to about 50 °C until the components were completely dispersed in the premix.
[0071] The premix was added to the aqueous phase. The mixture was then milled to emulsify the oil phase premix in the aqueous phase, forming an emulsion in which the aqueous phase was the continuous phase and the oil phase was the dispersed phase. One or more additional components were added after emulsification while continuously mixing with an overhead mixer. The additional components may be added either before, after, or during cooling of the product to room temperature, and examples of the additional components include, but are not limited to, polymer thickeners (e.g., SEPILIFE (trademark) NUDE, NATURSOL (trademark) EMI 132), silicones, colorants, pigments, powders, mica, preservatives, fragrances, and additional skin active substances.
[0072] The viscosities of the examples in the tables below were determined using the rheology test method disclosed herein.
[0073] Regarding the examples detailed in Tables 1 to 3 below and Figure 2, in a skin care composition containing a sodium acrylate / sodium acryloyldimethyltaurate copolymer among other components, various clean, natural and / or natural-derived emulsifiers were tested without cetearyl alcohol. Each emulsifier was tested in a composition having a skin softener containing either isododecane, a non-polar hydrocarbon oil, or triheptanoin, a triglyceride that is more polar than isododecane. The emulsifier can be acceptable to consumers if it helps build sufficient viscosity as shown when the composition has a viscosity of 550 Pa·s or more according to the rheology test method described herein. This viscosity is considered the minimum value necessary to produce an acceptable composition that can be enclosed in a bottle that is opened during consumer use, and compositions with higher viscosities may be more preferred by consumers. In some examples, the viscosity can be increased by adding more emulsifier and / or polymer. To show that the emulsifier builds viscosity over a range of products with different skin softener polarities, it may be preferable to select an emulsifier that results in a composition with sufficient viscosity with both isododecane and triheptanoin skin softeners. Also, many skin care products use more than one skin softener with different polarities to assist in the solubility of various skin care beneficial components that improve the texture and tone of the skin or protect against UV damage.
[0074] Some examples were made using modified corn starch, and others were made using Zea mays corn starch (commercially available as AMAZE® HTP Pure from Nouryon®). No perceptible difference in viscosity and stability was found when blended with either starch. Zea mays corn starch was found to be preferable in some large-scale production.

[0079] The emulsifiers used in Examples A-1 and 2 are emulsifiers used in some commercially available products. This emulsifier contains PEG-100 stearate, which is a polyethylene glycol ester of stearic acid. Skin care compositions with this emulsifier are known to have acceptable viscosity, stability, and product performance. However, among some consumers, there are those who prefer compositions that are natural or of natural origin and / or do not contain non-biodegradable PEG.
[0080] Examples B to J contain emulsifiers that do not contain PEG and are also clean. In addition, the emulsifiers in Examples B to J are natural or of natural origin and are biodegradable. The examples that had a viscosity of 550 Pa·s or more for both skin softeners were Examples E, G, and H.
[0081] Examples E-1 and 2 are not preferred because both examples had a significant unpleasant odor that would be unpleasant for many consumers.
[0082] Examples G-1 and 2 and H-1 and 2 had a viscosity of 550 Pa·s or more and had an odor that caused significant discomfort. In addition, both examples were stable emulsions. The emulsifiers in Examples H-1 and 2 were cetearyl olive oil fatty acid and sorbitan olive oil fatty acid. It is considered that other emulsifiers containing a mixture of waxy esters made from fatty alcohols and fatty acids derived from natural sources (e.g., olive, palm, corn, palm, rapeseed, soybean, sunflower, coconut, tallow, canola, castor) having a carbon chain length in the range of C12 to C22 could be used in stable skin care compositions having a sufficient viscosity (e.g., ≧550 Pa·s).
[0083] In some examples, G-1 and 2 would be preferred by consumers because these examples had the highest viscosity (e.g., ≧900 Pa·s). The emulsifiers in G-1 and 2 were polyglyceryl-3 cetearyl ether of olive oil fatty acid.
