Abstract
Description
[Technical field]
[0001] The present invention relates to a cartridge for insertion into a beverage preparation machine and a method of operating a cartridge for insertion into a beverage preparation machine. [Background technology]
[0002] Cartridges for insertion into beverage preparation machines are known from the prior art. For example, WO 2017 / 121802 A1 discloses the production of beverages using cartridges already portion-sized with a beverage substance. Producing a beverage using such a system is very convenient for the user, since he only has to insert the cartridge into the beverage preparation machine and start the start-up procedure. The beverage preparation machine, also called a dispenser, then handles the beverage preparation fully automatically; that is to say, specifically, the beverage substance is mixed with a predefined amount of liquid, in particular cold carbonated water, and directed into the beverage container. In this way, beverages can be produced in a much simpler and faster way and in a less complicated way for the user. The user has the freedom to make a variety of beverages, since he can choose from many different cartridges.
[0003] The cartridge has a cartridge body connected to a cartridge lid for insertion into a beverage preparation machine to produce a beverage, a beverage substance for producing the beverage being disposed within the cartridge body, and the cartridge lid serves as an interface for coupling to the beverage preparation machine, whereby the beverage substance can be brought into contact with water, e.g. mixed with water or dissolved in water.
[0004] In beverage preparation, it is not uncommon for multiple beverages to be served in rapid succession. These may be multiple identical or different ready-to-drink beverages, for example for entertaining a group of people. However, ready-to-drink beverages may often be mixed beverages, the preparation of which involves multiple beverages being prepared in succession and added to each other to form a mixed beverage. It has been demonstrated that changing cartridges adds time to the preparation of multiple beverages, resulting in an unsatisfactory preparation experience for the user. Summary of the Invention
[0005] It was therefore an object of the present invention to provide a cartridge for insertion into a beverage preparation machine which meets the requirements set for preparing beverages in rapid succession without relatively long intervals between beverage preparations, in particular making it possible to dispense several beverages in succession or to add several beverages to form a mixed beverage without having to exchange the cartridge.
[0006] This object is achieved by a cartridge according to claim 1 and a method according to claim 13.
[0007] Statements made with respect to this subject of the invention apply equally to the other subjects of the invention and vice versa.
[0008] The present invention relates to a cartridge for insertion into a beverage preparation machine, in particular for insertion into a dispenser. Cartridges of this type usually have a cartridge body with a chamber in which a beverage substance for preparing a beverage is placed. The cartridge also carries a cartridge lid. The cartridge lid serves as an interface to the beverage preparation machine and provides a mixing chamber into which the beverage substance is transferred from the chamber by a cartridge emptying unit. To prepare a beverage, the beverage substance transferred to the mixing chamber is mixed with a liquid supplied to the mixing chamber from the beverage preparation machine by a fluid supply.
[0009] The cartridge lid has a connection area for connection to the cartridge body, which can be inserted in cooperation with the cartridge body into the beverage preparation machine. The cartridge lid is preferably configured in the shape of a cap and has a large free opening on the side facing the cartridge body. Before use, the cartridge lid is preferably connected to the cartridge body, in particular by means of the cartridge neck. This connection is particularly preferably performed reversibly or irreversibly, for example by means of a snap-in fastening and / or a twist fastening.
[0010] The cartridge body is preferably snap-fitted into the cartridge lid. The cartridge body and the cartridge lid preferably have mutually engaging retaining elements. It is conceivable that the cartridge lid has a groove and the cartridge body has a flange that fits into the groove. However, it is also conceivable that the cartridge lid has a flange and the cartridge body has a groove. It is further conceivable that the cartridge lid has a latch cam arranged along the longitudinal axis that engages and latches into the receptacle of the cartridge body. It is conceivable that the cartridge lid and the cartridge body are mounted on the groove and the flange and / or on the latch cam and the receptacle so as to be rotatable relative to one another.
[0011] The cartridge lid is preferably provided to be placed on a cartridge bracket of the beverage preparation machine, said cartridge bracket being configured in particular balcony-like. Balcony-like preferably means that the cartridge bracket projects laterally from the housing of the beverage preparation machine and has a substantially horizontal extent. In order to be able to insert the cartridge into the cartridge bracket, the cartridge bracket preferably has a recess, in particular one that is centrally located. It is particularly preferred that the cartridge can then be inserted from above, cartridge lid leading, into this recess. It is most particularly preferred that the cartridge, in particular the cartridge lid, is reversibly lockable in the cartridge bracket.
[0012] The cartridge lid has a mixing chamber that can be fluidly connected to the chamber and a fluid supply that opens into the mixing chamber for directing liquid to the mixing chamber. This mixing chamber is preferably a free volume in the cartridge lid and particularly preferably seamlessly continuous with the cartridge body. The fluid supply is preferably a fluid supply opening, in particular in a side wall of the cartridge lid, so that the liquid is particularly preferably introduced into the mixing chamber substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis.
[0013] The cartridge lid has a cartridge removal device for at least partially transferring the beverage substance from the one or more chambers to the mixing chamber. Furthermore, the cartridge lid preferably has a beverage outlet for directly discharging the beverage from the mixing chamber, in particular into a beverage container. The cartridge removal device is preferably operable in a targeted manner so that the beverage substance is not inadvertently transferred into the mixing chamber. The cartridge lid is particularly preferably provided such that it can be assembled onto the cartridge body and then, with the cartridge lid facing downwards, is placed in the beverage preparation machine such that the mixed beverage is transferred from the cartridge lid into the beverage container, in particular by gravity.
[0014] According to the invention, it is provided that the cartridge body and the cartridge lid are configured to be rotatable relative to each other around the longitudinal axis of the cartridge body. When the cartridge body and the cartridge lid are twisted relative to each other, the assembly of chambers of the cartridge body rotates relative to the cartridge empty unit of the cartridge lid. As a result, the cartridge according to the invention allows for the supply of beverage substances from different chambers to the mixing chamber depending on the rotational position. If different beverage substances are arranged in each chamber, a mixed beverage can be prepared, for example, by mixing the beverage substance from the first chamber with a liquid, then rotating and mixing the beverage substance from the second chamber with a liquid, without the need to replace the cartridge. If the same beverage substance is arranged in the chambers, the same beverage can be prepared in rapid succession by mixing the beverage substance from the first chamber with a liquid, then rotating and mixing the beverage substance from the second chamber with a liquid. In this way, the cartridge lid together with its mixing chambers, fluid supply and cartridge empty unit is used multiple times. Apart from the ease of operation and the significantly increased speed of preparation of multiple beverages or mixed beverages, respectively, the waste generated is significantly reduced.
[0015] The cartridge lid is preferably made wholly or partly from a plastic material, in particular by injection moulding and / or blow moulding methods. According to a preferred embodiment: It is provided that the beverage outlet is configured to be substantially duct-shaped, in particular elongated, and / or the fluid supply is a fluid supply opening configured to establish a fluid connection to a fluid line of a beverage preparation machine. It is particularly preferred that the beverage outlet extends substantially along a longitudinal axis of the cartridge when the cartridge body and the cartridge lid are connected.
[0016] According to a preferred embodiment, it is provided that the cartridge empty unit is configured to transfer the beverage substance from exactly one chamber to the mixing chamber, which chamber is selectable by a relative rotational movement of the cartridge body with respect to the cartridge lid. This results in the advantageous technical effect that the beverage substance is always fed to the mixing chamber from only one chamber. As a result, unintentional over-metering of the beverage substance is avoided. The rotation to select the chamber from which the beverage substance is fed to the mixing chamber allows an ergonomic and comfortable operation that corresponds to the natural sequence, e.g. with a twist-and-push selector switch, when selecting the available options. The rotation of the cartridge body here allows a construction with little technical complexity, which allows for a robust and inexpensive cartridge offering maximum comfort.
[0017] According to a further preferred embodiment, it is provided that the cartridge body has, in particular, a barrel-shaped outer wall, and the chambers are separated from one another by inner walls that extend in a star-like manner radially outward from the longitudinal axis of the cartridge body towards the outer wall. This advantageously allows the available volume to be optimally utilized for the chambers for the disposal of the beverage substance. In the case of an eccentrically arranged cartridge emptying unit, the star-shaped arrangement of the inner walls allows an easy change of the chamber selected for the transfer of the beverage substance by rotation about the longitudinal axis. It is conceivable that the outer wall is made entirely or partly of a plastic material. It is further conceivable that the inner wall is made of a plastic material. It is conceivable that the inner wall and / or the outer wall are manufactured by injection molding and / or blow molding methods. However, it is also conceivable that the outer wall and / or the inner wall are manufactured entirely or at least partly from metal, preferably aluminium. It is also conceivable that the outer wall and / or the inner wall are manufactured entirely or at least partly from coated paper or paperboard.
[0018] According to a further preferred embodiment, it is provided that the base side of the cartridge body facing the cartridge lid is closed by a sealing element, which is preferably a sealing film / foil, particularly preferably substantially integrally fixed to a peripheral area or a flange of the cartridge body. In this way, it is advantageously ensured that the beverage ingredient is retained in the chamber until it is fed to the mixing chamber for beverage preparation. The sealing element preferably hermetically seals the cartridge body. It is preferably provided that the sealing element is sealed to the peripheral area or flange of the cartridge body or welded or glued to the peripheral area or flange of the cartridge body. It is conceivable that the sealing film / foil is a plastic film or a metal foil, for example an aluminum foil.
[0019] According to a further preferred embodiment, it is provided that the sealing element extends across the chambers, in particular completely across the base side of the cartridge body, and is substantially integrally connected to the peripheral area of the inner wall. This advantageously improves the stability of the sealing element and has the effect of a reliable mutual separation of the chambers. Due to the separation of the chambers, it is ensured that the beverage substances in the chambers do not mix with each other and that no beverage substance can enter from a chamber filled with beverage substance into an already emptied chamber, thus preventing leakage from a partially emptied cartridge body. Preferably, it is provided that the sealing element is sealed to the peripheral area of the inner wall or welded or glued to the peripheral area of the inner wall.
[0020] According to a further preferred embodiment, it is provided that the cartridge empty unit has opening means for opening the sealing elements in the region of the chambers. As a result, an advantageous manner is obtained in which the sealing means for transferring the beverage substance into the mixing chamber are opened in the region of selected chambers, thus ensuring that no beverage substance is transferred into the mixing chamber from a non-selected mixing chamber. Thus, inadvertent mixing of beverage substances from different chambers in the mixing chamber can be avoided. The chambers in the region where the sealing means are not opened remain closed so that no beverage substance can escape from said chambers. The cartridge removal device is preferably operable in a targeted manner so that no unintended transfer of beverage substance into the mixing chamber occurs.
[0021] According to a further preferred embodiment, it is provided that the opening means comprises a perforation needle movable between a retracted position, in which said perforation needle is spaced apart from the sealing element, and a deployed position, in which said perforation needle pierces the sealing element. This allows the sealing element to be opened in a narrow area in a targeted manner. The individual chambers can be opened in a highly targeted manner by piercing the sealing element with the perforation needle and opening the sealing element. In the retracted position, it is ensured that the chambers cannot be opened unintentionally. In the deployed position, the perforation needle can serve to keep the pierced opening of the sealing element open and to feed the beverage substance into the mixing chamber. It is conceivable that the perforation needle is at least partially manufactured from metal. However, it is also conceivable that the perforation needle is at least partially manufactured from a plastic material.
[0022] It is preferably provided that the cartridge lid comprises a mandrel guide on which the piercing needle is mounted so as to be movable, in particular in a direction towards the chamber.Furthermore it is preferably provided that the piercing needle is arranged to be transferred from a retracted position to a deployed position by an actuator element of the beverage preparation machine.
[0023] According to a further preferred embodiment, it is provided that the perforation needles have compressed air ducts for directing compressed air into the respective chambers in the deployed position. As a result, it is advantageously possible to push the beverage substance out of the chambers by feeding compressed air into the chambers and transporting it into the mixing chamber. During preparation, the compressed air is preferably supplied substantially simultaneously with the liquid, so that the liquid and the beverage substance enter the mixing chamber at the same time and are mixed therein. The skilled person will understand that, depending on the design embodiment, there may also be a slight time offset in order to achieve complete mixing in the mixing chamber. The compressed air, especially in combination with gravity, may push the beverage substance out of the chambers and prevent a vacuum from forming in the chambers and thus preventing the chambers from being completely emptied. For this purpose, it is preferably provided that the cartridge removal device comprises a compressed air connector and a compressed air line extending from the compressed air connector to the compressed air duct, the compressed air duct in the deployed position of the perforation needles opening into the chambers. It is preferably provided that the compressed air connector is provided for connection to a compressed air supply of the beverage preparation machine.
[0024] According to a further preferred embodiment, it is provided that the perforation needle has a transfer duct for transferring the beverage substance from the respective chamber in the deployed position to the mixing chamber. As a result, the outflow of the beverage substance from the chamber is possible in a particularly simple and reliable manner. The perforation needle preferably has a plurality of transfer ducts for transferring the beverage substance from the respective chamber in the deployed position to the mixing chamber. Alternatively or additionally, the perforation needle has at least one, preferably a plurality of recesses and / or protrusions on its outer circumference, which are provided as outlets for the beverage substance. The amount and size of the recesses and / or protrusions are preferably a function of the viscosity of the substrate.
[0025] According to a further preferred embodiment, it is provided that the compressed air duct and / or the transport duct are configured as a groove open to one side on the outer surface of the perforation needle or as a tubular line in the perforation needle. A groove open to one side on the outer surface is a particularly inexpensive way to manufacture and provide the transport duct or the compressed air duct. Particularly preferably, it is provided that the compressed air duct is configured as a tubular line in the perforation needle and the transport duct is configured as a groove open to one side on the outer surface of the perforation needle. As a result, a sufficient spatial separation between the compressed air leaving the compressed air duct and the beverage substance entering the transport duct is implemented in an advantageous manner. In particular, it is implemented such that the compressed air is introduced into the chamber in a precisely targeted manner, while the beverage substance, which is typically at least slightly viscous, has a reduced risk of adhering to the duct wall of the tubular duct and is therefore more easily transported into the mixing chamber.
[0026] Therefore, the outer wall of the perforation needle is preferably provided with at least one side duct as a transport duct for directing the beverage substance in the direction of the mixing chamber. In particular, the beverage substance can flow in the direction of the mixing chamber so as to bypass the sealing element via a transport duct configured laterally of the perforation needle. The multiple side ducts are preferably configured as transport ducts on the perforation needle. In particular, all the transport ducts are configured in the form of a groove open on one side in each case. It is conceivable that the cross section of the transport ducts and / or the number of transport ducts are adapted to the viscosity of the beverage substance, such that the transport ducts control or limit the flow of the beverage substance in the direction of the mixing chamber. In the case of high viscosity, multiple transport ducts or transport ducts with a larger cross section are used, while in the case of low viscosity, fewer transport ducts or transport ducts with a smaller cross section are provided. The skilled person will understand that this in particular means that a cartridge lid is provided that is adapted for each beverage substance and thus for different types of cartridge bodies. As the perforation needle is the only moving element of the cartridge lid, the cartridge lid is of robust construction and easy to manufacture. The fluid connection between the compressed air connector and the compressed air duct is preferably only present in the deployed position, in particular compressed air cannot leave the compressed air duct in the retracted position, so that it is advantageously ensured that compressed air flows out of the compressed air duct only in the deployed position, i.e. when the sealing element is pierced.
[0027] According to a further preferred embodiment, it is provided that a ratchet mechanism is arranged between the cartridge body and the cartridge lid, which defines a latched position in which the opening means is in each case located centrally below the chamber. As a result, it is advantageously ensured that the relative position of the cartridge body with respect to the cartridge lid after rotation of the cartridge body with respect to the cartridge lid is such that when preparing a beverage, beverage substance is transferred from exactly one chamber to the mixing chamber. As a result of the position, centrally located below the chamber and with the opening means in the latched position, it is further ensured that an optimal and almost complete supply of beverage substance to the mixing chamber, in particular an optimal and complete evacuation of beverage substance by compressed air, takes place. It is conceivable that the ratchet mechanism allows only one rotational direction about the longitudinal axis of the cartridge body with respect to the cartridge lid. It is thus advantageously ensured that after a first beverage preparation with beverage substance from a first chamber and a second beverage preparation from a second chamber for the next beverage preparation, the first chamber, which has become empty as a result of the first beverage preparation, is not inadvertently positioned again above the opening means. It is conceivable that the ratchet mechanism has a catch which engages in a toothed latch rail. It is conceivable that the catch engages in an engagement position between the teeth of the latch rail, which engagement position defines the latched position. It is conceivable that a preload is applied so that the catch engages in the engagement position. It is conceivable, for example, that the catch, and preferably the latch rail, are made from a plastic material. It is conceivable that the teeth of the latch rail on the first side have a slight slope and the teeth on the second side have a steep slope. As a result, it is advantageously implemented that different large forces are applied for rotation in different directions, so that reverse rotation into an already emptied chamber is prevented or at least hindered.
[0028] According to a further preferred embodiment, it is provided that a blocking mechanism is arranged between the cartridge body and the cartridge lid, which is adjustable between a blocking position, in which the relative rotational movement of the cartridge body relative to the cartridge lid is blocked, and a release position, in which the relative rotational movement of the cartridge body relative to the cartridge lid is released. As a result, unintentional rotation of the cartridge body relative to the cartridge lid is advantageously prevented. To transfer the cartridge from the blocking position to the release position, it is conceivable that the cartridge body is moved along a longitudinal axis relative to the cartridge lid, preferably slightly separating or compressing the cartridge body and the cartridge lid. However, it is also conceivable that the cartridge body or the cartridge lid for transferring the cartridge from the blocking position to the release position is pressed laterally. It is conceivable that the blocking mechanism comprises a first blocking element arranged on the cartridge body and a second blocking element arranged on the cartridge lid. It is conceivable that the first blocking element and the second blocking element in the blocking position are connected to each other in a form-fit and / or force-fit manner, and that the blocking elements in the release position are spaced apart from each other such that there is neither a form-fit nor a force-fit between the blocking elements.
[0029] A further subject of the invention is a method for operating a cartridge according to the invention, comprising the following method steps: a. in a first method step, rotating the cartridge body relative to the cartridge lid until the cartridge empty unit is aligned with a desired chamber; b. in a second method step, opening the chamber with a cartridge emptying unit; c. in a third method step, transferring the substance disposed in the chamber into the mixing chamber by a cartridge emptying unit; d. In a third method step, supplying liquid to the mixing chamber by a fluid supply.
[0030] The method according to the invention advantageously allows for the selection of a chamber of a cartridge for beverage preparation by rotating the cartridge body relative to the cartridge lid. As a result, the time required for preparing a beverage is significantly reduced when a cartridge is already inserted, since there is no need to exchange the cartridge for selecting the chamber. Especially in a series of beverage preparations, the method according to the invention is very convenient and more convenient than the comparable method of the prior art, in which none of the chambers of the plurality of chambers is selected by rotation.
[0031] The statements made relating to this subject of the invention apply in an analogous manner to the other subjects of the invention and vice versa.
[0032] According to a preferred embodiment, in a fourth method step, it is provided that the cartridge body is rotated again relative to the cartridge lid until the cartridge empty unit is aligned with another chamber, and the second and third method steps are repeated with the other chamber. The rotational movement in the fourth step after the beverage preparation in the third step allows a further beverage preparation in the fourth step without the need to replace the cartridge or the cartridge body during the process. This advantageously allows for rapid successive beverage preparations, for example when entertaining guests. If the chambers of the cartridge are filled with different beverage substances, in this way a mixed beverage can be prepared in a simple, fast and convenient way by adding a beverage of the beverage preparation in the fourth step to a beverage of the beverage preparation in the third step.
[0033] According to a preferred embodiment, it is provided that in a second method step, the perforation needle is moved from the retracted position to the deployed position, thereby perforating the sealing element closing the chamber. As a result, it is advantageously ensured that the beverage substance leaves the chamber only for beverage preparation. Furthermore, the perforation of the sealing element by the perforation needle ensures that only the chamber envisaged for beverage preparation is emptied. Unintended mixing of the beverage substance is thus prevented. It is conceivable that the perforation needle is transferred from the retracted position to the deployed position by an actuator element of the beverage preparation machine. For this purpose, it is conceivable that the actuator element has at least one protrusion which engages in a form-fitting and / or force-fitting manner with the lower end of the perforation needle, and that when the actuator element is actuated, it moves said perforation needle in the mandrel guide in the direction of the chamber, such that the perforation needle pierces the sealing element.
[0034] According to a preferred embodiment, in a third method step it is provided that compressed air is led through a compressed air duct of the perforation needle into the chamber and the beverage substance is led from the chamber through a transport duct of the perforation needle to the mixing chamber.
[0035] As a result, it is advantageously possible to push the beverage substance out of the chamber by feeding compressed air into the chamber and transporting it into the mixing chamber. During preparation, the compressed air is preferably supplied substantially simultaneously with the liquid, so that the liquid and the beverage substance enter the mixing chamber at the same time and are mixed in the mixing chamber. The skilled person will understand that depending on the design embodiment, there may be a slight time offset in order to achieve complete mixing in the mixing chamber. The compressed air, especially in combination with gravity, may push the beverage substance out of the chamber, preventing a vacuum from forming in the chamber and preventing the chamber from being completely emptied. For this purpose, it is preferably provided that the cartridge removal device comprises a compressed air connector and a compressed air line extending from the compressed air connector to a compressed air duct, the compressed air duct in the deployed position of the piercing needle opening into the chamber. It is preferably provided that the compressed air connector is provided for connection to a compressed air supply source of the beverage preparation machine.
[0036] According to a preferred embodiment, it is provided that in an intermediate step carried out after the third method step and before the fourth method step, the piercing needle is moved from the deployed position to the retracted position, so that the rotation in the fourth step is advantageously facilitated. Since the piercing needle in the retracted position is not in contact with the cartridge body, the rotation of the cartridge body and the cartridge lid relative to each other is not hindered by the piercing needle. It is assumed that the movement of the piercing needle from the deployed position to the retracted position is triggered by an actuator element of the beverage preparation machine.
[0037] The invention will now be described with the aid of figures 1 and 2. These descriptions are merely illustrative and do not limit the general concept of the invention. The descriptions apply to the cartridge according to the invention and likewise to the method according to the invention. In particular, identical elements have been given the same reference numbers. [Brief description of the drawings]
[0038] [Figure 1(a)-(c)] 1A-1D are views of a cartridge according to an exemplary embodiment of the present invention and an individual cartridge body of a cartridge according to an exemplary embodiment of the present invention from different angles. [Figure 2(a)-(c)] 1A-1C are diagrams illustrating different views of a cartridge lid cartridge according to an exemplary embodiment of the present invention. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
[0039] In the perspective view of Fig. 1(a) a cartridge 1 according to a first exemplary embodiment of the present invention is shown. The cartridge 1 comprises a cartridge body 3 having a number of chambers 4 and a cartridge lid 2. A beverage substance for preparing a beverage in a beverage preparation machine (not shown) is arranged in each chamber 4. The same beverage substance may be arranged in each of the chambers 4. However, it is also conceivable that a first beverage substance is arranged in a chamber 4.1 and a second beverage substance is arranged in another chamber 4.2.
[0040] The cartridge 1, and in particular the outer wall 5 of the cartridge body 3, can have virtually any shape, for example a circular or angular cross-section, and dimensions, in particular length and diameter, which are within a wide range of possibilities. The only condition is that the cartridge body 3 is configured so that the cartridge lid 2 of the cartridge 1 can be connected thereto.
[0041] The chambers 4 are formed by inner walls 7, preferably made of a plastic material, which are arranged in a star shape starting from the center of the cartridge body 3, which is located on the longitudinal axis L of the cartridge body 3, towards the outer wall 5 of the cartridge body 3. The inner walls 7 thus divide the cartridge body 3 into chambers 4 like slices of a pie. A cartridge body 3 is shown having eight chambers 4 of the same size. However, any other number greater than one is also conceivable. Furthermore, it is also conceivable that the chambers 4 are of different sizes.
[0042] The outer wall 7 of the cartridge body 3 is preferably cylindrical and is at least partially made from a plastic material and / or metal.
[0043] The cartridge body 3 is located on top of the cartridge lid 2. The cartridge lid 2 has a beverage outlet 6 and serves as an interface to a beverage preparation machine.
[0044] The cartridge lid 2 and the cartridge body 3 are rotatable relative to each other about a longitudinal axis L (indicated by the arrow).
[0045] A top view of the cartridge body 3 is plotted in Fig. 1(b). In order to emphasize the technical effect of the rotation about the vertical axis (here perpendicular to the plane of the paper), a cartridge empty unit 20 of the cartridge lid is plotted here, which would in fact be hidden by the cartridge body 3 in the top view. The cartridge empty unit 20 serves to remove the beverage substance from the chamber 4 in order to prepare a beverage containing the beverage substance.
[0046] The cartridge empty unit 20 is arranged centrally below the chamber 4, 4.1. In this position, beverage substance can be removed from the chamber 4, 4.1 via the cartridge empty unit 20 and fed to the beverage preparation. If the cartridge body 3 and the cartridge lid are now rotated relative to each other about the longitudinal axis L (indicated by the dashed arrow), the position of the cartridge empty unit 20 relative to the cartridge body 3 also changes.
[0047] The cartridge 1 between the cartridge body 3 and the cartridge lid 2 has a latching mechanism (not shown for clarity) which defines a latched position in which the cartridge empty unit 20 is located centrally below the chamber 4. In the shown position a beverage can be prepared using the beverage substance from the chamber 4, 4.1. For further beverage preparation there is no need to remove the cartridge body 3. By rotation about the longitudinal axis L the cartridge body 3 is positioned such that the latching mechanism latches into the latched position and the cartridge empty unit 20 is located centrally below the further chamber 4.2.
[0048] In order to prevent unintentional rotation of the cartridge body 3 relative to the cartridge lid 2, the cartridge 1 is provided with a blocking mechanism (not shown). The blocking mechanism can be moved from a blocking position where rotation is inhibited to a release position where rotation is released, and vice versa. To achieve this purpose, it is conceivable to press the cartridge body 3 against the cartridge lid 2, pull the cartridge body 3 away from the cartridge lid 2, or push the cartridge body 3 in from the side in order to move the blocking mechanism from the blocking position to the release position.
[0049] The cartridge body 3 in FIG. 1(c) is plotted in a perspective view with the base side facing the cartridge lid 2. In order to ensure the storage of the beverage substance in the chambers 4 until beverage preparation, a sealing element 19, preferably in the form of a sealing film / foil, for example made of a plastic material or metal, is provided on the base side of the cartridge body 3. The sealing element 19 extends completely across the base side and covers all chambers 4 of the cartridge body 3. For this purpose, said sealing element 19 is fixed in a substantially integral manner with the cartridge body 3 in the peripheral area, in particular to the edge of the outer wall 5 facing the base side, for example welded or sealed. In order to separate the chambers 4 from one another and to prevent the beverage substance from entering one chamber 4 into another chamber 4, the sealing element 19 is further fixed in a substantially integral manner to the edge of the inner wall 7 facing the base side, for example welded or sealed to said edge.
[0050] The sealing element 19 in particular closes the chamber in an air-tight manner, i.e. in particular in a liquid-tight and gas-tight manner. The chamber here serves as a reservoir for a preferably liquid beverage substance. The skilled person will understand that instead of a beverage substance, in particular liquid food substances such as, for example, baby food, pulp, soup or medicinal products such as high-calorie nutrients may also be present. It is important that the (beverage) substance is provided to be mixed with a liquid, in particular water.
[0051] FIG. 2(a) shows a perspective view of a cartridge lid 2 of a cartridge according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention.
[0052] The shape of the cartridge lid 2, shown here purely by way of example, can in particular be seen here: said cartridge lid 2 at its upper end, which corresponds to the lower end according to the illustrations in figures 1(a) and 2(b), has a walled rectangular peripheral area in which the beverage outlet 6, the gas outlet 16 and the actuator receptacle 9 on the piercing needle 8 are arranged. The cartridge lid 2 is preferably made from a plastic material.
[0053] Except for this region, the cartridge lid 2 here has a substantially dome shape, ie at the edge situated opposite the opening, it is configured to be essentially rounded.
[0054] Further shown in Figure 2(a) is a jet forming element 18 within the beverage outlet 6, here configured as a ribbed cross. The length of the beverage outlet 6, its cross section and the jet forming element 15 together serve to shape and / or direct the outgoing beverage jet.
[0055] A schematic cross-sectional view of the cartridge lid 2 of the cartridge 1 according to an exemplary embodiment of the present invention is shown in FIG. 2(b).
[0056] The cartridge lid 2 opens towards the cartridge body 3, in particular towards the sealing means 19. At the opposite end of the cartridge lid 2 there are at least two openings. One opening is the beverage outlet 6, through which the finished mixed beverage can exit and is preferably transferred directly into a beverage container such as a cup, tumbler or glass. The beverage outlet 6 is preferably configured in a duct-like manner, i.e. with a side wall in the vertical extent. The length of the beverage outlet 6 here is selected in particular such that a directional and homogeneous beverage jet is generated. The beverage outlet for this purpose also particularly preferably further comprises a jet-forming element 18, e.g. a cross, which is arranged in the lower region and configured to form the jet in the desired manner.
[0057] A fluid supply 15, here configured in particular as a hole with a conical rim, is provided in a side wall of the cartridge lid 2. In the beverage preparation machine, this fluid supply 15 interacts with a coupling element (not shown), whereby liquid, in particular cold water and / or carbonated water, is introduced via the fluid supply 15 into the cartridge lid 2.
[0058] Here, the free volume of the cartridge lid 2 serves as a mixing chamber 14 in which the beverage substance is mixed with the incoming liquid, thus forming the desired beverage before the latter exits through the beverage outlet 6 .
[0059] As can be seen from the concept, the upper opening of the beverage outlet 6 is located above the lower region of the mixing chamber 15, so that a sufficient length for forming a jet is achieved. As a result, the beverage generated in the mixing chamber 14 can nevertheless be led completely out of the cartridge container 1, thus avoiding in particular subsequent dripping and unusable residual dead volume when removing the cartridge system from the beverage preparation machine, which cartridge container 1 furthermore has a residue outlet 21, in particular arranged at the lowest point of the mixing chamber (in the direction present in the assembled arrangement in the beverage preparation machine). The residue outlet 21 is particularly preferably arranged adjacent to the beverage outlet 6 and / or is at least partially part of the beverage outlet 6. Here, for example, the beverage outlet 6 is arranged to have a substantially circular cross section, but whereby a small area of the cross section within the circumferential area is configured as the residue outlet 21. In particular, the upper inlet surface of the residue outlet 21 is arranged lower than the upper inlet surface of the beverage outlet 6. As a result, the residue outlet 21 is currently only provided for discharging a relatively small amount of residue, so that its length and cross-sectional area are significantly smaller than the length and cross-sectional area of the beverage outlet 6.
[0060] To transfer the beverage substance from the chamber 4 to the mixing chamber 14, the cartridge lid 2 has a cartridge removal device 20. The cartridge lid 2 under the fluid supply 15 has a compressed air connector 13, which again has a conical rim that interacts with the compressed air supply of the beverage preparation machine, so that compressed air can be introduced into the cartridge lid 2. The coupling element on the machine preferably comprises a compressed air line and a liquid line, allowing the coupling element to couple to both openings, i.e. the fluid supply 15 and the compressed air connector 13, in particular simultaneously. The compressed air from the compressed air connector 13 is led in the direction of a mandrel guide 17. The mandrel guide 17 here is configured as an opening that receives the perforation needle 8 in a form-fitting manner, such that the perforation needle 8 is longitudinally movable between a retracted position and a deployed position. The mandrel guide 17 and the perforation needle 8 here are part of the cartridge removal device 20.
[0061] The perforation needle 8 is provided to interact with an actuator element (not shown) of the beverage preparation machine so that the perforation needle 8 can be moved from its retracted position to the deployed position. The perforation needle 8 in the deployed position pierces the sealing element 19, so that the beverage substance can flow through the sealing film / foil 19 into the mixing chamber 14 via at least one transfer duct 10, in particular in the form of a groove-like duct arranged on the outer periphery of the perforation needle 8. Since a vacuum is or can be created in the chamber 4 when transferring the beverage substance from the chamber 4, the perforation needle 8 has an internal tubular compressed air duct 11 opening at the tip of the perforation needle 8, and the perforation needle 8 is in particular configured such that the compressed air line 12 is fluidly connected to the compressed air connector 13 only in the deployed position. As a result, it is ensured that compressed air is not inadvertently introduced into the mixing chamber 14. The compressed air is introduced into the chamber 4 during beverage preparation to replace the volume emptied in said chamber 4 by the outflow of the beverage substance into the mixing chamber 14 and to push out the beverage substance.
[0062] It is conceivable that the beverage preparation machine controls the compressed air supply such that towards the end of the beverage preparation a residual amount of beverage substance, liquid and / or beverage is forced out of the cartridge 1 through the residue outlet 21.
[0063] Nevertheless, a certain amount of gas, in particular carbon dioxide, is usually released into the mixing chamber. This gas can escape, for example via the beverage outlet 6, into the environment, but in the process can disturb the beverage jet. For example, intermittent jets or splashes and foam can occur. This is undesirable. The cartridge lid 2 therefore has a gas outlet 16, which is in particular configured to be separated from the beverage outlet 6. Separation here means in particular that liquid and / or gas downstream of the mixing chamber 14 cannot pass from the beverage outlet 6 to the gas outlet 16 and vice versa. There is therefore no hole or fluid connection between the two outlets, which are preferably configured in a duct-like manner. Thus, and by extension, if, as shown here, the upper inlet face of the gas outlet 16 is arranged higher than the upper inlet face of the beverage outlet 6, it is ensured that the liquid, and therefore neither the introduced liquid nor the beverage substance nor the finished beverage, is discharged through the gas outlet 16, but that the beverage is discharged first via the beverage outlet 6 and then via the smaller residue outlet 21.
[0064] The gas outlet 16 here is provided approximately in the centre of the cartridge container 1, but could also be located, for example, in the peripheral area. However, the arrangement shown here is advantageous since in perfect mixing situations the liquid and beverage substance travel an ideally long path between the fluid supply 15 and the beverage outlet 6 and therefore it is desirable to be able to advantageously utilise the central area between the mandrel guide 17 and the beverage outlet 6.
[0065] The perforation needle preferably has a tip and an obliquely arranged face which facilitates the perforation of the sealing element 19. The compressed air duct 10 preferably opens into said face, in particular in the centre of the perforation needle 8.
[0066] The perforation needle 8 has at its lower end an actuator receptacle 9, here an area embodied as a recess, into which an actuator element of the beverage preparation machine engages in order to move the perforation needle 8 from the retracted position to the deployed position. This area is preferably configured to be at least partially tapered towards the top, i.e. in the direction of the tip of the perforation needle 8, in order to allow easy centering of the actuator element, so that tilting of the perforation needle 8 in the mandrel guide 17 and consequent potential damage to the cartridge 1 and / or the beverage preparation machine is avoided.
[0067] The lower end region of the cartridge lid 2 is currently provided to be oblique, but this is primarily an aesthetic decision: a substantially horizontally arranged end region, for example oriented in particular parallel to the connection region, in particular to the opening plane defined by the upper surrounding edge, is also possible.
[0068] Here, the gas outlet 16 and the beverage outlet 6 have a substantially circular cross section, except for a small area occupied by the residue outlet 21 in the case of the beverage outlet 6. However, the skilled person will understand that other cross sections, for example elliptical or polygonal cross sections, are also possible in principle.
[0069] 2(c) now shows a view of the cartridge lid 2 seen in the direction of the sealing element 19 of the cartridge body 3. This embodiment substantially corresponds to the embodiment already described above, so that the latter description is also relevant here. Here in particular it can be seen that the cartridge lid 2 has a substantially circular cross section which is flattened in the area of the fluid supply 15 and the compressed air connector 13 in order to make it easier to couple to the beverage preparation machine.
[0070] The mandrel guide 17, the gas outlet 16, the beverage outlet 6 and / or the residue outlet 21 are preferably integrally formed.
[0071] Here, the groove-like transfer duct 10 of the perforation needle 8 and the compressed air duct 11 of the cartridge empty unit 20 are easily visible.
[0072] It can finally be seen from the view of FIG. 2(c) that in particular the residue outlet 21, the beverage outlet 6, the gas outlet 16, the mandrel guide 17, and likewise the fluid supply 15 and the compressed air connector 13, are substantially located on an imaginary axis extending from left to right in the drawing, with the majority of the mixing chamber 14 being provided on either side of this axis.
