AI Technical Summary
Existing light source devices for projectors face issues with temperature increase at specific locations in the phosphor layer due to continuous excitation light incidence, leading to decreased conversion efficiency and increased unfocused fluorescent light, which affects image formation efficiency.
A light source device with a rotating optical element and condensing element configuration that changes the incidence position of excitation light on the wavelength conversion element, ensuring the focal point remains aligned with a separate optical axis, reducing localized heating and expanding the emission range of fluorescent light.
This configuration suppresses localized temperature increases in the wavelength conversion element, maintaining high conversion efficiency and reducing unfocused fluorescent light, thereby enhancing the utilization of fluorescent light for image formation.

Abstract
Description
[Technical field]
[0001] The present disclosure relates to a light source device and a projector. [Background technology]
[0002] 2. Description of the Related Art Conventionally, light source devices including a laser light source and a phosphor are known as light source devices for projectors (see, for example, Patent Documents 1 and 2). The light source device described in Patent Document 1 includes a phosphor layer, a substrate that supports the phosphor layer, and a support member that is thermally connected to the substrate. A part of the support surface of the substrate that supports the phosphor layer is thermally connected to the support member, so that the substrate dissipates heat from the phosphor layer via the substrate and the support member.
[0003] In the light source device described in Patent Document 1, the excitation light is always incident on the same position on the phosphor layer. Therefore, the temperature at the incident position of the excitation light is likely to become high. When the temperature of the phosphor layer increases, the efficiency of conversion from excitation light to fluorescence in the phosphor layer may decrease. In contrast, in the light source device described in Patent Document 2, the focusing position of the excitation light on the phosphor layer is changed by changing the angle of the plate-shaped optical member onto which the excitation light is incident, or by moving the focusing optical system that focuses the excitation light on the phosphor layer, thereby preventing the excitation light from continuously being incident on the same position on the phosphor layer. [0004] [Patent Document 1] JP 2018-180107 A [Patent Document 2] JP 2018-190664 A Summary of the Invention [Problem to be solved by the invention]
[0005] However, in the light source device described in Patent Document 2, the excitation light is incident at an angle to the optical axis of the focusing optical system, or is incident at a deviation from the optical axis of the focusing optical system. Therefore, when the excitation light is incident on the phosphor layer via the focusing optical system, the incidence range of the excitation light in the phosphor layer is expanded, and the generation range of the fluorescence is expanded. In this case, the fluorescence is emitted in a broadened manner, which causes a problem that the amount of the fluorescence that is not focused by the focusing optical system increases. In other words, there is a problem that the amount of the fluorescence that is not used for image formation increases. [Means for solving the problem]

[0010] [Exterior casing configuration] The exterior housing 2 constitutes the exterior of the projector 1. The exterior housing 2 accommodates the image projection device 3, the cooling device, the control device, and the power supply device inside. The exterior housing 2 has a front surface 21, a back surface 22, a right side surface 23, and a left side surface 24, as well as a top surface and a bottom surface (not shown), and is formed in a substantially rectangular parallelepiped shape. Although not shown, the front surface 21 is provided with an opening through which an image projected by a projection optical device 36 (described later) passes. In the following description, the three mutually orthogonal directions are referred to as the +X direction, +Y direction, and +Z direction. The +Z direction is the direction from the rear surface 22 to the front surface 21, the +X direction is the direction from the right side surface 23 to the left side surface 24, and the +Y direction is the direction from the bottom surface to the top surface. Although not shown in the figures, the direction opposite the +X direction is referred to as the -X direction, the direction opposite the +Y direction is referred to as the -Y direction, and the direction opposite the +Z direction is referred to as the -Z direction.
[0011] [Configuration of image projection device] The image projection device 3 generates an image according to image information and projects the generated image. The image projection device 3 includes a light source device 4A, a homogenizer 31, a color separator 32, a parallelizing lens 33, a light modulator 34, a color combiner 35, and a projection optical device 36. The light source device 4A emits illumination light WL to the uniformizing device 31. The configuration of the light source device 4A will be described in detail later. The homogenizer 31 homogenizes the illumination light WL emitted from the light source device 4A. Although not shown, the homogenizer 31 has a pair of lens arrays, a polarization conversion element, and a superimposing lens.
[0012] The color separation device 32 separates blue light LB, green light LG, and red light LR from the illumination light WL incident from the uniformization device 31. The color separation device 32 includes dichroic mirrors 321 and 322, reflecting mirrors 323, 324, and 325, relay lenses 326 and 327, and an optical component housing 328 that houses these therein. The dichroic mirror 321 transmits the blue light LB and reflects the green light LG and red light LR of the light contained in the illumination light WL. The blue light LB transmitted through the dichroic mirror 321 is reflected by the reflecting mirror 323 and guided to the collimating lens 33 (33B). The dichroic mirror 322 reflects the green light LG out of the green light LG and the red light LR reflected by the dichroic mirror 321, guides the green light LG to the collimating lens 33 (33G), and transmits the red light LR. The red light LR is guided to the collimating lens 33 (33R) via a relay lens 326, a reflecting mirror 324, a relay lens 327, and a reflecting mirror 325. The collimating lens 33 collimates the incident light. The collimating lens 33 includes a collimating lens 33R for red light, a collimating lens 33G for green light, and a collimating lens 33B for blue light.
[0013] The light modulation device 34 modulates the light emitted from the light source device 4A in accordance with image information. The light modulation device 34 includes a red light modulation element 34R that modulates red light, a green light modulation element 34G that modulates green light, and a blue light modulation element 34B that modulates blue light. The light modulation elements 34R, 34G, and 34B are each configured to include, for example, a liquid crystal panel that modulates the incident light, and a pair of polarizing plates arranged on each of the entrance side and exit side of the liquid crystal panel. The color synthesizer 35 synthesizes the color lights LR, LG, and LB modulated by the light modulator 34 to form an image based on the image information. In this embodiment, the color synthesizer 35 is configured with a cross dichroic prism, but it can also be configured with multiple dichroic mirrors. The projection optical device 36 projects and enlarges the image synthesized by the color synthesis device 35 onto the projection surface PS, and displays the image on the projection surface PS. As the projection optical device 36, for example, a lens assembly composed of a lens barrel and a plurality of lenses arranged in the lens barrel can be used.
[0014] [Light source configuration] FIG. 2 is a schematic diagram showing the configuration of the light source device 4A. The light source device 4A emits illumination light WL along the +Z direction to the homogenizer 31. As shown in FIG. 2 , the light source device 4A includes a light source housing 41, a light source unit 42, an afocal optical element 43, a first phase difference element 44, a diffuse transmission element 45, a light separation element 46, a second phase difference element 47, a light collecting element 48, a diffusion element 49, a third phase difference element 50, and a wavelength conversion device 6.
[0015] [Light source housing configuration] The light source casing 41 is a casing into which dust does not easily enter, and is formed in a substantially rectangular parallelepiped shape. The light source casing 41 has a front surface 411, a back surface 412, a right side surface 413, and a left side surface 414. In addition, although not shown, the light source casing 41 has a top surface connecting the +Y direction ends of the front surface 411, the back surface 412, the right side surface 413, and the left side surface 414, and a bottom surface connecting the -Y direction ends of them. The front surface 411 is a surface from which the illumination light WL is emitted in the light source casing 41, and is disposed in the +Z direction in the light source casing 41. The front surface 411 has an exit port 415 that emits the illumination light WL. The rear surface 412 is the surface opposite to the front surface 411, and is disposed on the −Z direction side with respect to the front surface 411. A substrate 64 of the wavelength converter 6, which will be described later, is thermally connected to the rear surface 412.
[0016] An illumination optical axis Ax1 along the +X direction and an illumination optical axis Ax2 along the +Z direction are set in the light source housing 41. That is, the illumination optical axis Ax1 and the illumination optical axis Ax2 intersect. The optical components of the light source device 4A are disposed on the illumination optical axis Ax1 or the illumination optical axis Ax2. Specifically, the light source unit 42, the afocal optical element 43, the first phase difference element 44, the diffuse transmission element 45, the light separation element 46, the second phase difference element 47, the light collecting element 48 and the diffusion element 49 are arranged on the illumination optical axis Ax1. The wavelength converter 6, the light splitting element 46, and the third phase difference element 50 are disposed on the illumination optical axis Ax2. That is, the light splitting element 46 is disposed at the intersection of the illumination optical axis Ax1 and the illumination optical axis Ax2.
[0017] [Light source configuration] The light source unit 42 is fixed to the right side surface 413, and emits light in the +X direction along the illumination optical axis Ax1. The light source unit 42 includes a light source 421, a light source support substrate 422, and a lens 423. The light source 421 emits s-polarized blue light BL1 in the +X direction. The light source 421 is composed of at least one solid-state light emitting element. Specifically, the light source 421 is a semiconductor laser, and the blue light BL1 emitted by the light source 421 is, for example, a laser beam having a peak wavelength of 440 nm. The light source support substrate 422 supports the light source 421, and is fixed to the right side surface 413. The light source support substrate 422 is formed of, for example, a metal so that heat from the light source 421 can be easily transferred to the light source housing 41. The lens 423 is provided in correspondence with the light source 421 , and collimates the blue light BL 1 incident from the light source 421 and makes it incident on the afocal optical element 43 .
[0018] [Configuration of afocal optical elements] The afocal optical element 43 is disposed in the +X direction with respect to the light source unit 42, and reduces the beam diameter of the blue light BL1 incident from the light source unit 42. The afocal optical element 43 is composed of a first lens 431 that collects the incident beam, and a second lens 432 that collimates the beam collected by the first lens 431. Note that the afocal optical element 43 may not be provided.
[0019] [Configuration of the first phase difference element] The first phase difference element 44 converts a part of the blue light BL1 incident from the afocal optical element 43 into p-polarized blue light BLp. That is, the first phase difference element 44 converts the incident blue light BL1 into a mixture of s-polarized blue light BLs and p-polarized blue light BLp. The first phase difference element 44 may be rotated by a rotating device about a rotation axis along the illumination optical axis Ax1. In this case, the ratio of s-polarized blue light BLs and p-polarized blue light BLp in the light flux output from the first phase difference element 44 can be adjusted according to the rotation angle of the first phase difference element 44. It should be noted that the s-polarized light is s-polarized light for the light splitting element 46, and the p-polarized light is p-polarized light for the light splitting element 46.
[0020] [Configuration of diffuse transmission element] The diffuse transmission element 45 is disposed in the +X direction with respect to the first phase difference element 44, and homogenizes the illuminance distribution of the blue light BLs, BLp incident from the first phase difference element 44. Examples of the diffuse transmission element 45 include a configuration having a hologram, a configuration in which a plurality of small lenses are arranged in a plane perpendicular to the optical axis, and a configuration in which the surface through which light passes is rough. Instead of the diffuse transmission element 45, a homogenizer optical element having a pair of multi-lenses may be used.
[0021] [Structure of the light separation element] The blue light beams BLs and BLp enter the light separation element 46 from the diffuse transmission element 45 . The light separation element 46 corresponds to a reflecting element. The light separation element 46 emits a first portion of the light emitted from the light source 421 toward the wavelength conversion device 6 and emits a second portion of the light toward the diffusion element 49. More specifically, the light separation element 46 is a polarizing beam splitter that separates the s-polarized component and the p-polarized component contained in the incident light, and reflects the s-polarized component and transmits the p-polarized component. The light separation element 46 also has a color separation characteristic that transmits light of a predetermined wavelength or more, regardless of whether the polarized component is the s-polarized component or the p-polarized component. For this reason, the light separation element 46 transmits the p-polarized blue light BLp of the blue light BLs, BLp incident from the diffuse transmission element 45, makes it enter the second phase difference element 47, and reflects the s-polarized blue light BLs toward the wavelength conversion device 6. The light separation element 46 may have a function of a half mirror that transmits a portion of the light incident from the diffuse transmission element 45 and reflects the remaining light, and a function of a dichroic mirror that reflects the blue light BLs incident from the second phase difference element 47 and transmits the fluorescence YL incident from the wavelength conversion device 6. In this case, the first phase difference element 44 and the second phase difference element 47 can be omitted. In this specification, the s-polarized blue light BLs separated by the light separation element 46 is an example of the first light in the first wavelength band emitted from the light source 421. That is, the light separation element 46 reflects the first light emitted from the light source 421 and guides it to the wavelength conversion element 63.
[0022] [Configuration of the second phase difference element] The second phase difference element 47 is disposed in the +X direction with respect to the light separation element 46. The second phase difference element 47 converts the blue light BLp incident in the +X direction from the light separation element 46 into circularly polarized blue light BLc. The second phase difference element 47 also converts the circularly polarized blue light BLc incident in the -X direction from the light collection element 48 into s-polarized blue light BL2.
[0023] [Configuration of the light-collecting element] The light collecting element 48 is disposed in the +X direction with respect to the second phase difference element 47, and collects the blue light BLc incident from the second phase difference element 47 onto the diffusion element 49. The light collecting element 48 also collimates the blue light BLc incident from the diffusion element 49 and outputs it to the second phase difference element 47. Note that the light collecting element 48 is composed of two lenses 481, 482, but the number of lenses constituting the light collecting element 48 can be changed as appropriate.
[0024] [Configuration of diffusion element] The diffusion element 49 reflects and diffuses the blue light BLc incident from the light collecting element 48 in the −X direction at a diffusion angle similar to that of a wavelength conversion element 63 described later. The diffusion element 49, for example, performs Lambertian reflection on the incident blue light BLc. The blue light BLc reflected by the diffusion element 49 passes through the concentrating element 48 along the -X direction and then enters the second phase difference element 47. By being reflected by the diffusion element 49, the blue light BLc is converted into circularly polarized light having a rotation direction opposite to that of the blue light BLc that passed through the second phase difference element 47 in the +X direction. Therefore, the blue light BLc that enters the second phase difference element 47 via the concentrating element 48 is converted into s-polarized blue light BL2 by the second phase difference element 47. The blue light BL2 that enters the light separation element 46 from the second phase difference element 47 is reflected in the +Z direction by the light separation element 46 and enters the third phase difference element 50.
[0025] [Configuration of the third phase difference element] The third phase difference element 50 is disposed in the +Z direction with respect to the light separation element 46, and converts the blue light BL2 and fluorescence YL incident from the light separation element 46 into white light containing a mixture of s-polarized light and p-polarized light. The white light thus converted is output to the homogenizer 31 as illumination light WL. That is, the light output from the light source device 4A to the homogenizer 31 is illumination light WL containing a mixture of blue light BL2 and fluorescence YL.
[0026] [Configuration of wavelength conversion device] The wavelength converter 6 converts the wavelength of the incident light and emits the converted light. That is, the wavelength converter 6 emits fluorescence YL which is converted light obtained by converting the wavelength of the blue light BLs incident from the light separation element . The wavelength conversion device 6 includes an optical element 61, a focusing element 62, a wavelength conversion element 63, a substrate 64 and a heat dissipation member 65 arranged in this order from the light separation element 46 side, and a driving element 66 that rotates the optical element 61 and the focusing element 62 around a rotation axis Rx.
[0027] [Optical element configuration] The optical element 61 refracts the blue light BLs incident from the light separating element 46, and emits it toward the light collecting element 62. In addition, the optical element 61 refracts the fluorescence YL incident from the light collecting element 62, and emits it toward the light separating element 46. The optical element 61 is a plate-shaped light-transmitting member, and is made of glass in this embodiment. The optical element 61 has a first surface 611 and a second surface 612 disposed on the opposite side to the first surface 611.
[0028] Each of the first surface 611 and the second surface 612 is inclined with respect to a plane perpendicular to the +Z direction. The first surface 611 and the second surface 612 are parallel surfaces. Note that the first surface 611 and the second surface 612 being parallel includes being approximately parallel. The first surface 611 is disposed in the +Z direction. The first surface 611 is a surface onto which the blue light BLs is incident from the light separation element 46. In addition, the first surface 611 is a surface from which the fluorescence YL incident from the light collecting element 62 is emitted to the light separation element 46. The blue light BLs emitted from the light separation element 46 in the -Z direction along the illumination optical axis Ax2 is incident on the first surface 611. The blue light BLs incident on the first surface 611 is refracted when entering the optical element 61. Hereinafter, the optical axis of the blue light BLs incident on the first surface 611 of the optical element 61 is referred to as a first optical axis X1.
[0029] The second surface 612 is disposed in the -Z direction. The second surface 612 is a surface that emits the blue light BLs that has traveled through the optical element 61 toward the condensing element 62. That is, the second surface 612 emits the blue light BLs that has been incident on the first surface 611 and refracted, in the -Z direction toward the condensing element 62. Hereinafter, the optical axis of the blue light BLs emitted from the second surface 612 is referred to as the second optical axis X2. That is, the emission position of the blue light BLs as the first light on the second surface 612 is on the second optical axis X2. The second surface 612 is a surface onto which the fluorescence YL is incident from the wavelength conversion element 63. That is, the fluorescence YL emitted in the +Z direction from the light collecting element 62 is incident on the second surface 612. The fluorescence YL incident on the second surface 612 is refracted when entering the optical element 61. The fluorescence YL that has traveled inside the optical element 61 is emitted in the +Z direction from the first surface 611 towards the light separation element 46. The fluorescence YL emitted in the +Z direction from the first surface 611 travels along the optical path of the blue light BLs incident on the first surface 611 in the opposite direction to the blue light BLs.
[0030] [Configuration of the light-collecting element] The light-collecting element 62 is disposed in the −Z direction with respect to the optical element 61. That is, the light-collecting element 62 is disposed between the optical element 61 and the wavelength conversion element 63 in the +Z direction. The light collecting element 62 collects the blue light BLs incident from the optical element 61 onto the wavelength conversion element 63. In addition, the light collecting element 62 collimates the fluorescence YL incident from the wavelength conversion element 63 and outputs the collimated fluorescence to the optical element 61. The light collecting element 62 has a first lens 621 arranged in the +Z direction and a second lens 622 arranged in the -Z direction. However, the number of lenses constituting the light collecting element 62 may be one, or may be three or more. Such a condensing element 62 is disposed such that the optical axis of the condensing element 62 coincides with the second optical axis X2. Therefore, the focal point of the condensing element 62 exists on the second optical axis X2. Note that the optical axis of the condensing element 62 coinciding with the second optical axis X2 includes the case where they approximately coincide with each other.
[0031] [Configuration of wavelength conversion element] The wavelength conversion element 63 converts the first light in the first wavelength band into the second light in the second wavelength band different from the first wavelength band. That is, the wavelength conversion element 63 converts the wavelength of the blue light BLs incident from the light collecting element 62, and emits the fluorescence YL which is the converted light. In this embodiment, the wavelength conversion element 63 is a reflective wavelength conversion element which emits the fluorescence YL to the incident side of the blue light BLs.
[0032] The wavelength conversion element 63 includes a wavelength conversion layer 631 and a reflective layer 633 . The wavelength conversion layer 631 includes a phosphor that generates fluorescence YL having a wavelength longer than the wavelength of the blue light BLs. The fluorescence YL is light having a peak wavelength of, for example, 500 to 700 nm, and includes green light and red light. The fluorescence YL is an example of a second light of a second wavelength band different from the first wavelength band. The surface of the wavelength conversion layer 631 in the +Z direction is an incident surface 632 on which the blue light BLs is incident. That is, the wavelength conversion element 63 has the incident surface 632 on which the blue light BLs is incident.
[0033] The incident surface 632 intersects with the first optical axis X1 at the center of the incident surface 632 when viewed from the +Z direction. That is, the rotation axis Rx coinciding with the first optical axis X1 intersects with the center of the incident surface 632 when viewed from the +Z direction. Note that the first optical axis X1 and the rotation axis Rx intersecting with the center of the incident surface 632 also include the case where they intersect with approximately the center of the incident surface 632. On the other hand, the intersection position with the second optical axis X2 on the incident surface 632 is separated from the intersection position with the first optical axis X1 on the incident surface 632. That is, the first optical axis X1 and the second optical axis X2 are separated from each other on the incident surface 632. The intersection position with the second optical axis X2 on the incident surface 632 is the incident position on the incident surface 632 of the blue light BLs. In the present embodiment, the wavelength conversion layer 631 is formed in a substantially circular shape when viewed from the +Z direction. However, the present invention is not limited to this, and the wavelength conversion layer 631 may be formed in a substantially rectangular shape or a ring shape when viewed from the +Z direction.
[0034] The reflective layer 633 is provided on the opposite side to the incident side of the blue light BLs with respect to the wavelength conversion layer 631. That is, the reflective layer 633 is provided in the -Z direction with respect to the wavelength conversion layer 631. The reflective layer 633 reflects the light incident from the wavelength conversion layer 631 in the +Z direction. The reflective layer 633 is also a part of the wavelength conversion element 63 that is connected to the substrate 64.
[0035] The fluorescence YL emitted in the +Z direction from such a wavelength conversion element 63 is incident on the condensing element 62. The fluorescence YL incident on the condensing element 62 is collimated by the condensing element 62 and is incident on the second surface 612 of the optical element 61. The fluorescence YL incident on the second surface 612 is refracted by the optical element 61 and is emitted in the +Z direction from the first surface 611. The fluorescence YL emitted from the first surface 611 is incident on the light splitting element 46 along the first optical axis X1, passes through the light splitting element 46, and is incident on the third phase difference element 50.
[0036] [Configuration of the board and heat dissipation component] The substrate 64 supports the wavelength conversion element 63. The substrate 64 has a support surface 641 that supports the wavelength conversion element 63, and the support surface 641 is thermally connected to the outer surface of the back surface 412. The substrate 64 is made of a material such as metal so that heat from the wavelength conversion element 63 can be easily transferred. The heat dissipation member 65 is provided on the surface of the substrate 64 opposite to the wavelength conversion element 63. The heat dissipation member 65 dissipates heat of the wavelength conversion element 63 transferred from the substrate 64 to the outside of the light source housing 41. The heat dissipation member 65 has a plurality of fins 651, and a cooling gas circulated by a cooling device flows between the plurality of fins 651. The plurality of fins 651 dissipate heat of the wavelength conversion element 63 by transferring the heat of the wavelength conversion element 63 to the cooling gas.
[0037] [Drive element configuration] The driving element 66 rotates the optical element 61 and the condensing element 62 around the rotation axis Rx. More specifically, the driving element 66 rotates the optical element 61 and the condensing element 62 integrally around the rotation axis Rx. The rotation frequency of the optical element 61 and the condensing element 62 by the driving element 66 can be set arbitrarily, but if it is 60 Hz or higher, the user will be less likely to notice flickering in the image. As described above, the rotation axis Rx coincides with the first optical axis X1. Note that the rotation axis Rx coinciding with the first optical axis X1 includes the case where the rotation axis Rx and the first optical axis X1 substantially coincide with each other. The driving element 66 can be configured, for example, by a hollow motor that houses the optical element 61 and the condensing element 62 therein. For this reason, the driving element 66 can suppress blocking of the blue light BLs and the fluorescence YL passing through the optical element 61 and the condensing element 62. However, without being limited thereto, the driving element 66 may be configured to have a holding member that holds the optical element 61 and the condensing element 62 and rotate the holding member about a rotation axis Rx.
[0038] [Position of incidence of blue light on wavelength conversion element] FIG. 3 is a plan view of the incident position SP of the blue light BL1 on the incident surface 632 of the wavelength conversion element 63 as viewed from the +Z direction. The first optical axis X1 is the optical axis of the blue light BLs incident on the optical element 61. The second optical axis X2 is the optical axis of the blue light BLs refracted by the optical element 61 and emitted from the second surface 612. The optical axis of the condensing element 62 coincides with the second optical axis X2, and the focal point of the condensing element 62 exists on the second optical axis X2. The first optical axis X1, which coincides with the rotation axis Rx, and the second optical axis X2 are separated from each other on the incident surface 632, as shown in FIG. 3. The incident position SP of the blue light BLs on the incident surface 632 corresponds to the intersection with the second optical axis X2 on the incident surface 632. When the optical element 61 and the condensing element 62 are rotated about the rotation axis Rx by the driving element 66, the incident position SP is located on a circular locus centered on the first optical axis X1. That is, on the incident surface 632, the incident position SP moves continuously over time along the circumferential direction centered on the intersection of the incident surface 632 with the first optical axis X1.
[0039] In this way, the incident position SP of the blue light BLs, which is the excitation light, changes continuously over time on the incident surface 632, so that the blue light BLs can be prevented from being locally incident on the incident surface 632. Therefore, the temperature of the incident surface 632 can be prevented from being locally increased, and the efficiency of conversion of the blue light BLs to fluorescence YL by the wavelength conversion element 63 can be prevented from being reduced. In addition, since the focus of the light collecting element 62 is on the second optical axis X2, the blue light BLs is collected at the intersection with the second optical axis X2 on the incident surface 632, so that the incident range of the blue light BLs on the incident surface 632 can be reduced. Therefore, the range in which the fluorescence YL is emitted from the wavelength conversion element 63 can be reduced, and the fluorescence YL available in the optical system downstream of the wavelength conversion element 63 can be increased.
[0040] [Effects of the first embodiment] The projector 1 according to the present embodiment described above provides the following advantages. The projector 1 includes a light source device 4A, a light modulation device 34 that modulates the illumination light WL emitted from the light source device 4A to form an image, and a projection optical device 36 that projects the image formed by the light modulation device 34. The light source device 4A includes a light source 421, an optical element 61, a condensing element 62, a wavelength conversion element 63, a substrate 64, and a driving element 66. The light source 421 emits blue light BLs. The blue light BLs corresponds to a first light of a first wavelength band. The wavelength conversion element 63 converts the blue light BLs into fluorescence YL. The wavelength conversion element 63 has an incident surface 632 on which the blue light BLs is incident. The fluorescence YL corresponds to a second light of a second wavelength band different from the first wavelength band. The substrate 64 supports the wavelength conversion element 63. The optical element 61 is provided in the optical path of the blue light BLs emitted from the light source 421 and incident on the wavelength conversion element 63. The condensing element 62 condenses the blue light BLs emitted from the optical element 61 onto the wavelength conversion element 63. The driving element 66 rotates the optical element 61 and the condensing element 62 about a rotation axis Rx parallel to a first optical axis X1 of the blue light BLs incident on the optical element 61. The optical element 61 has a first surface 611 on which the blue light BLs is incident, and a second surface 612 from which the blue light BLs is emitted toward the condensing element 62. An incident position SP of the blue light BLs on the first surface 611 is on the first optical axis X1. An exit position of the blue light BLs on the second surface 612 and the focal point of the condensing element 62 are on a second optical axis X2 parallel to the first optical axis X1. The first optical axis X1 and the second optical axis X2 are spaced apart from each other on the incident surface 632.
[0041] According to this configuration, the driving element 66 rotates the optical element 61 and the condensing element 62 around the rotation axis Rx, thereby moving the incident position SP of the blue light BLs incident on the incident surface 632 of the wavelength conversion element 63 at the intersection with the second optical axis X2. At this time, since the focal point of the condensing element 62 is on the second optical axis X2, the blue light BLs is condensed on the incident surface 632 at the intersection with the second optical axis X2. This makes it possible to reduce the incident range of the blue light BLs on the incident surface 632, and to reduce the range in which the fluorescence YL is emitted from the wavelength conversion element 63. As a result, it is possible to increase the fluorescence YL that can be used in the optical system downstream of the wavelength conversion element 63. In addition, it is possible to prevent the blue light BLs from being locally incident on the wavelength conversion element 63, and therefore it is possible to prevent the temperature of the wavelength conversion element 63 from being locally increased. Therefore, a decrease in the efficiency of conversion from the blue light BLs to the fluorescence YL by the wavelength conversion element 63 can be suppressed, and the efficiency of extracting the fluorescence YL from the wavelength conversion element 63 can be increased.
[0042] In the light source device 4A, the rotation axis Rx coincides with the first optical axis X1. Here, when the rotation axis Rx of the optical element 61 and the condensing element 62 does not coincide with the first optical axis X1, when the optical element 61 and the condensing element 62 are rotated by the driving element 66, the locus of the incidence position SP of the blue light BLs on the incidence surface 632 is disposed outside the locus of the intersection part of the first optical axis X1 centered on the rotation axis Rx. That is, the locus of the incidence position SP is concentric with the locus of the intersection part of the first optical axis X1, and is disposed outside the locus of the intersection part of the first optical axis X1. In this case, since the diameter of the locus of the incidence position SP of the blue light BLs becomes relatively large, the wavelength conversion element 63 tends to be large in order to make the blue light BLs incident without leakage. In contrast, by making the rotation axis Rx coincident with the first optical axis X1, the diameter of the locus of the incident position SP of the blue light BLs on the incident surface 632 can be made smaller than when the rotation axis Rx does not coincide with the first optical axis X1. Therefore, the wavelength conversion element 63 can be made small.
[0043] In the light source device 4A, the first surface 611 is inclined with respect to a plane perpendicular to the first optical axis X1, and the first surface 611 and the second surface 612 are parallel to each other. According to this configuration, the blue light BLs incident on the first surface 611 can be refracted by the optical element 61. Therefore, by rotating the optical element 61 and the light collecting element 62 by the driving element 66, the incident position SP of the blue light BLs on the incident surface 632 can be changed. Furthermore, since the first surface 611 and the second surface 612 are parallel to each other, it is easy to grasp the emission position of the blue light BLs from the second surface 612. Therefore, it is easy to arrange the light-collecting element 62 whose focal point is located on the second optical axis X2.
[0044] [Second embodiment] Next, a second embodiment of the present disclosure will be described. The projector according to this embodiment has a similar configuration to the projector 1 according to the first embodiment, but the configuration of the light source device is different. Specifically, the light source device provided in the projector according to this embodiment further includes an afocal optical element in addition to the configuration provided in the light source device 4A according to the first embodiment. Note that in the following description, parts that are the same or approximately the same as parts already described are given the same reference numerals and description thereof will be omitted.
[0045] [Light source configuration] FIG. 4 is a schematic diagram showing a light source device 4B according to this embodiment. The projector according to this embodiment has the same configuration and functions as the projector 1 according to the first embodiment, except that it has a light source device 4B shown in FIG. 4 instead of the light source device 4A according to the first embodiment. The light source device 4B further includes an afocal optical element 51, and has the same configuration and functions as the light source device 4A.
[0046] The afocal optical element 51 is disposed between the light separating element 46 and the wavelength conversion device 6 on the illumination optical axis Ax2. That is, the afocal optical element 51 is provided on the incident side of the blue light BLs with respect to the optical element 61 in the optical path of the blue light BLs incident on the wavelength conversion element 63. The afocal optical element 51 reduces the beam diameter of the blue light BLs emitted from the light separating element 46 and incident on the optical element 61, and collimates the blue light BLs. In addition, the afocal optical element 51 expands the beam diameter of the fluorescence YL incident from the optical element 61, and collimates the fluorescence YL.
[0047] The afocal optical element 51 has a first lens 511 provided in the +Z direction and a second lens 512 provided in the -Z direction. The first lens 511 collects the blue light BLs incident from the light separation element 46. The second lens 512 collimates the blue light BLs collected by the first lens 511 and emits it in the -Z direction. The blue light BLs emitted from the second lens 512 is incident on the optical element 61 of the wavelength conversion device 6. The second lens 512 expands the beam diameter of the fluorescence YL incident from the optical element 61. The first lens 511 collimates the fluorescence YL incident from the second lens 512. The fluorescence YL emitted from the first lens 511 in the +Z direction is incident on the light separation element 46.
[0048] [Effects of the second embodiment] The projector according to this embodiment described above provides the following effects in addition to the effects similar to those of the projector 1 according to the first embodiment. The light source device 4B includes an afocal optical element 51 that is provided on the incident side of the blue light BLs with respect to the optical element 61 in the optical path of the blue light BLs incident on the wavelength conversion element 63, and that reduces the beam diameter of the blue light BLs and collimates the blue light BLs. According to this configuration, the afocal optical element 51 can reduce the diameter of the beam of the blue light BLs incident on the optical element 61. This allows the optical element 61, the light collecting element 62, and the wavelength conversion element 63 to be configured in small sizes. This allows the light source device 4B to be made smaller.
[0049] [Third embodiment] Next, a third embodiment of the present disclosure will be described. The projector according to this embodiment has the same configuration as the projector according to the first embodiment, but the configuration of the light source device is different. Specifically, the light source device provided in the projector according to this embodiment further includes an afocal optical element in addition to the configuration provided in the light source device 4A according to the first embodiment. Also, the position of the afocal optical element in this embodiment is different from the position of the afocal optical element in the light source device 4B according to the second embodiment. Note that in the following description, parts that are the same or approximately the same as parts already described are given the same reference numerals and description thereof will be omitted.
[0050] FIG. 5 is a schematic diagram showing the configuration of a light source device 4C according to this embodiment. The projector according to this embodiment has the same configuration and functions as the projector 1 according to the first embodiment, except that it has a light source device 4C shown in FIG. 5 instead of the light source device 4A according to the first embodiment. The light source device 4C further includes an afocal optical element 52 and has the same configuration and functions as the light source device 4A.
[0051] The afocal optical element 52 is disposed inside the light source housing 41. Specifically, the afocal optical element 52 is disposed on the emission side of the illumination light WL with respect to the third phase difference element 50 on the illumination optical axis Ax2. That is, the afocal optical element 52 is disposed between the third phase difference element 50 and the uniformizing device 31. The afocal optical element 52 expands the beam diameter of the illumination light WL incident from the third phase difference element 50, and collimates and emits the expanded illumination light WL. That is, the afocal optical element 52 expands the beam diameter of the fluorescence YL emitted from the wavelength conversion element 63, and collimates the expanded fluorescence YL. The afocal optical element 52 has a first lens 521 and a second lens 522. The first lens 521 is disposed in the -Z direction and expands the diameter of the light incident from the third phase difference element 50. The second lens 522 collimates the light incident in the +Z direction from the first lens 521. The afocal optical element 52 may be provided between the light separating element 46 and the third phase difference element 50 on the illumination optical axis Ax2.
[0052] [Effects of the third embodiment] The projector according to this embodiment described above provides the following effects in addition to the effects similar to those of the projector 1 according to the first embodiment. The light source device 4C includes an afocal optical element 52 that expands the beam diameter of the fluorescence YL emitted from the wavelength conversion element 63 and collimates the expanded beam. With this configuration, the beam diameter of the fluorescence YL emitted from the light source device 4C can be expanded by the afocal optical element 52. As a result, when the light source device 4C is configured so that the beam diameter of the illumination light WL emitted from a light source device without the afocal optical element 52 matches the beam diameter of the illumination light WL emitted from the light source device 4C, among the components constituting the light source device 4C, the components upstream of the afocal optical element 52 in the optical path of the blue light and the optical path of the fluorescent light can be made small. Therefore, the light source device 4C can be made compact.
[0053] [Modifications of the embodiment] The present disclosure is not limited to the above-described embodiments, and modifications and improvements within the scope that can achieve the object of the present disclosure are included in the present disclosure. In each of the above embodiments, the light source devices 4A, 4B, and 4C include the light separation element 46 that guides a portion of the blue light emitted from the light source 421 to the wavelength conversion element 63 and guides the other blue light to the diffusion element 49. However, the present disclosure is not limited to this, and the light source device may be configured so that all of the blue light emitted from the light source 421 is incident on the wavelength conversion element 63. In this case, for example, a light source device that emits white light may be configured by combining the fluorescence YL generated by the wavelength conversion element 63 with blue light emitted from another light source.
[0054] In each of the above-described embodiments, the rotation axis Rx of the optical element 61 and the light-collecting element 62 driven by the driving element 66 coincides with the first optical axis X1, which is the optical axis of the blue light BLs incident on the optical element 61. However, this is not limiting, and the rotation axis Rx does not have to coincide with the first optical axis X1.
[0055] In each of the above embodiments, the first surface 611 of the optical element 61 is inclined with respect to a plane perpendicular to the first optical axis X1. However, this is not limited thereto, and the first surface of the optical element into which the first light is incident does not have to be inclined with respect to a plane perpendicular to the first optical axis. In other words, it is only necessary that the traveling direction of the first light incident on the first surface can be changed inside the optical element, and the first light can be emitted from the second surface parallel to the first optical axis. Also, the first surface 611 and the second surface 612 are parallel to each other. However, this is not limiting, and the first surface and the second surface of the optical element do not have to be parallel to each other.
[0056] In each of the above-described embodiments, the rotation axis Rx of the optical element 61 and the light collecting element 62 intersects with the center of the incident surface 632 of the wavelength conversion layer 631 of the wavelength conversion element 63. However, this is not limited thereto, and the rotation axes of the optical element and the light collecting element may intersect at a portion other than the center of the incident surface of the wavelength conversion element on which the first light is incident.
[0057] In each of the above embodiments, the light source devices 4A, 4B, and 4C are provided with the light separation element 46 that reflects the blue light BLs emitted from the light source 421 and guides it to the wavelength conversion element 63. However, this is not limited, and the light separation element 46 may be omitted. That is, the wavelength conversion device 6 may be arranged on the illumination optical axis Ax1, and the blue light BLs emitted from the light source 421 along the illumination optical axis Ax1 may be incident on the wavelength conversion device 6. In addition, the light separation element 46 corresponds to a reflecting element. However, the reflecting element of the present disclosure is not limited to one that reflects a part of the incident light and transmits the other light according to the wavelength or polarization state, and may be a total reflection mirror that reflects almost all of the incident light.
[0058] In the second embodiment, the light source device 4B includes the afocal optical element 51, which is provided on the incident side of the blue light BLs with respect to the optical element 61 in the optical path of the blue light BLs incident on the wavelength conversion element 63, and which reduces the beam diameter of the blue light BLs and collimates the blue light BLs. That is, the light source device 4B includes the afocal optical element 51, which is provided between the light separation element 46 and the optical element 61, reduces the beam diameter of the beam incident on the optical element 61 from the light separation element 46, and collimates the reduced beam. However, the present invention is not limited to this, and the afocal optical element 51 may be disposed between the optical element 61 and the condensing element 62 such that the optical axis of the afocal optical element 51 coincides with the second optical axis X2. In this case, the driving element 66 may rotate the optical element 61, the condensing element 62, and the afocal optical element 51 together about the rotation axis Rx.
[0059] In each of the above embodiments, the wavelength conversion element 63 has the wavelength conversion layer 631 that converts blue light BLs into fluorescence YL, and the reflective layer 633 that reflects light incident from the wavelength conversion layer 631. However, this is not limited, and the reflective layer 633 may be omitted. In this case, the light incident from the wavelength conversion layer 631 may be reflected by the substrate 64. The wavelength conversion element 63 may also be configured to emit fluorescence YL along the incident direction of the blue light BLs. That is, the wavelength conversion element of the present disclosure may be a transmissive wavelength conversion element.
[0060] In each of the above embodiments, the wavelength conversion device 6 includes the substrate 64 and the heat dissipation member 65. However, this is not limited to the above, and the substrate 64 and the heat dissipation member 65 may be omitted. In addition, the substrate 64 does not necessarily have to be thermally connected to the light source housing 41.
[0061] In the first embodiment, the light source device 4A has the configuration and layout shown in Fig. 2. In the second embodiment, the light source device 4B has the configuration and layout shown in Fig. 4. In the third embodiment, the light source device 4C has the configuration and layout shown in Fig. 5. However, the present disclosure is not limited to this, and the configuration and layout of the light source device of the present disclosure are not limited to the above examples. The same applies to a projector equipped with the light source device of the present disclosure.
[0062] In each of the above embodiments, the light modulation device 34 includes three light modulation elements 34B, 34G, and 34R. However, the number of light modulation elements included in the light modulation device is not limited to three and can be changed as appropriate. In addition, each of the light modulation elements 34B, 34G, and 34R has a transmissive liquid crystal panel with different light entrance and exit surfaces. However, the present invention is not limited to this, and a reflective liquid crystal panel with the same light entrance and exit surfaces may be used. In addition, a light modulation element other than liquid crystal, such as a device using a micromirror such as a DMD (Digital Micromirror Device), may be used as long as the light modulation element is capable of modulating an incident light beam to form an image according to image information.
[0063] In each of the above-described embodiments, the light source device according to the present disclosure is applied to a projector. However, the present disclosure is not limited to this, and the light source device according to the present disclosure may be applied to electronic devices other than a projector, such as a lighting device and a headlight of an automobile or the like.
[0064] [Summary of this disclosure] The following is a summary of this disclosure. A light source device according to a first aspect of the present disclosure includes a light source that emits first light in a first wavelength band, a wavelength conversion element that converts the first light into second light in a second wavelength band different from the first wavelength band, a substrate that supports the wavelength conversion element, an optical element provided in an optical path of the first light emitted from the light source and incident on the wavelength conversion element, a focusing element that focuses the first light emitted from the optical element on the wavelength conversion element, and a rotation axis that is parallel to a first optical axis of the first light incident on the optical element and the optical element. and a driving element which rotates the focusing element, wherein the wavelength conversion element has an incident surface on which the first light is incident, and the optical element has a first surface on which the first light is incident and a second surface from which the first light exits toward the focusing element, wherein the incident position of the first light on the first surface is on the first optical axis, the exit position of the first light on the second surface and the focal point of the focusing element are on a second optical axis parallel to the first optical axis, and the first optical axis and the second optical axis are spaced apart from each other on the incident surface.
[0065] According to this configuration, the driving element rotates the optical element and the condensing element around the rotation axis, thereby moving the incident position of the first light incident on the incident surface of the wavelength conversion element at the intersection with the second optical axis. At this time, since the focus of the condensing element is on the second optical axis, the first light is condensed on the wavelength conversion element at the intersection with the second optical axis. This makes it possible to reduce the incident range of the first light on the incident surface, and to reduce the range from which the second light is emitted from the wavelength conversion element. In addition, it is possible to prevent the first light from continuing to be locally incident on the wavelength conversion element, and therefore it is possible to prevent the temperature of the wavelength conversion element from increasing locally. Therefore, it is possible to prevent a decrease in the conversion efficiency from the first light to the second light by the wavelength conversion element, and to increase the extraction efficiency of the second light from the wavelength conversion element.
[0066] In the first aspect above, the rotation axis may coincide with the first optical axis. Here, when the rotation axis of the optical element and the condensing element does not coincide with the first optical axis, when the optical element and the condensing element are rotated by the driving element, the locus of the incident position of the first light on the incident surface is arranged outside the locus of the intersection part of the first optical axis centered on the rotation axis. That is, the locus of the incident position is concentric with the locus of the intersection part of the first optical axis and arranged outside the locus of the intersection part of the first optical axis. In this case, the diameter of the locus of the incident position of the first light becomes relatively large, so that the wavelength conversion element tends to be large in order to make the first light incident without leakage. In contrast, by making the rotation axis coincident with the first optical axis, the diameter of the locus of the incident position of the first light on the incident surface can be made smaller than when the rotation axis does not coincide with the first optical axis, and therefore the wavelength conversion element can be made smaller.
[0067] In the first aspect, the first surface may be inclined with respect to a plane perpendicular to the first optical axis, and the first surface and the second surface may be parallel to each other. According to this configuration, the first light incident on the first surface can be refracted by the optical element, and therefore, the optical element and the light collecting element can be rotated by the driving element to change the incident position of the first light on the entrance surface. In addition, since the first surface and the second surface are parallel to each other, it is easy to grasp the emission position of the first light from the second surface, and therefore it is easy to arrange a light collecting element whose focal point is located on the second optical axis.
[0068] In the first aspect described above, an afocal optical element may be provided on an incident side of the first light with respect to the optical element in an optical path of the first light incident on the wavelength conversion element, the afocal optical element reducing a beam diameter of the first light and collimating the first light. According to this configuration, the afocal optical element can reduce the diameter of the beam of the first light incident on the optical element, which allows the optical element, the light collecting element, and the wavelength conversion element to be configured in a small size, thereby allowing the light source device to be made smaller.
[0069] In the first aspect described above, an afocal optical element may be provided that expands a beam diameter of the second light emitted from the wavelength conversion element and collimates the expanded beam. According to this configuration, the afocal optical element can expand the beam diameter of the second light emitted from the light source device. According to this, when a light source device having an afocal optical element is configured so that the beam diameter of the beam emitted from a light source device without an afocal optical element matches the beam diameter of the beam emitted from a light source device having an afocal optical element, among the components constituting the light source device, the components upstream of the afocal optical element in the optical path of the first light and the optical path of the second light can be made small. Therefore, the light source device can be made compact.
[0070] A projector according to a second aspect of the present disclosure includes a light source device according to the first aspect described above, a light modulation device that modulates illumination light emitted from the light source device to form an image, and a projection optical device that projects the image formed by the light modulation device. According to this configuration, it is possible to achieve the same effects as the light source device according to the first aspect. [Explanation of symbols]
