FIG. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS

[0038] As used herein, the term "delivery system" is intended to encompass a system that delivers at least one substance to a user, including: Combustion-based aerosol delivery systems, such as cigarettes, cigarillos, cigars and pipes or tobacco for roll-your-own or homemade cigarettes (whether based on tobacco, tobacco derivatives, expanded tobacco, reconstituted tobacco, tobacco substitutes or other smoking materials) Non-combustion aerosol delivery systems that release compounds from an aerosol-generating material without burning the aerosol-generating material, such as e-cigarettes, tobacco heating products, and hybrid systems that generate an aerosol using a combination of aerosol-generating materials; and and an aerosol-free delivery system that orally, nasally, transdermally or otherwise delivers to a user at least one substance, with or without nicotine, including, but not limited to, lozenges, gums, patches, articles containing patch-inhalable powders, and oral products such as oral tobacco, including snus or moist snus.

[0039] For purposes of this disclosure, a "combustion-based" aerosol delivery system is one in which the constituent aerosol-generating materials of the aerosol delivery system (or its components) are combusted or burned to facilitate delivery to a user.

[0040] In some embodiments, the delivery system is a combustion-based delivery system, such as a system selected from the group consisting of cigarettes, cigarillos, and cigars.

[0041] In some embodiments, the present disclosure relates to components for use in combustion-based aerosol delivery systems, such as filters, filter rods, filter segments, tobacco rods, strings, aerosol modifier releasing members such as capsules, twine or beads or papers such as plug wrappers, tipping papers or cigarette papers.

[0042] For purposes of this disclosure, a "non-combustion based" aerosol delivery system is one that does not combust or burn the constituent aerosol-generating materials of the aerosol delivery system (or its components) to facilitate delivery of at least one substance to a user.

[0043] In some embodiments, the delivery system is a non-combustion based aerosol delivery system, such as an electrically powered non-combustion based aerosol delivery system.

[0044] In some embodiments, the non-combustion based aerosol delivery system is an e-cigarette, also known as a vaping device or electronic nicotine delivery system (END), although it should be noted that the presence of nicotine in the aerosol-generating material is not a requirement.

[0045] In some embodiments, the non-combustion based aerosol delivery system is an aerosol-generating material heating system, also known as a non-combustion heating system, one example of such a system is a tobacco heating system.

[0046] In some embodiments, the non-combustion aerosol delivery system is a hybrid system that uses a combination of aerosol-generating materials to generate an aerosol, one or more of which may be heated. Each of the aerosol-generating materials may be, for example, in solid, liquid, or gel form, and may or may not contain nicotine. In some embodiments, the hybrid system includes a liquid or gel aerosol-generating material and a solid aerosol-generating material. The solid aerosol-generating material may include, for example, tobacco or a non-tobacco product.

[0047] Typically, a non-combustion aerosol delivery system may include a non-combustion aerosol delivery device and a consumable for use with the non-combustion aerosol delivery device.

[0048] In some embodiments, the present disclosure relates to consumables, sometimes referred to as articles throughout this disclosure, that include an aerosol generating material and are configured for use in non-combustion based aerosol delivery devices.

[0049] In some embodiments, consumables for use in non-combustion based aerosol delivery systems may include an aerosol-generating material, an aerosol-generating material storage region, an aerosol-generating material transport component, an aerosol generator, an aerosol-generating region, a housing, a wrapper, a filter, a mouthpiece, and / or an aerosol modifier.

[0050] Referring to Figure 1, a conventional inner pack 2 for tobacco industry products is shown. The inner pack 2 comprises a sheet material that is wrapped around a bundle of tobacco industry products (not shown). The inner pack 2 comprises flaps that are folded around a bundle of tobacco industry products. However, as the inner pack 2 is not sealed, there are gaps between the flaps that allow air to flow in and out of the inner pack, affecting the freshness of the tobacco industry products.

[0051] Referring to FIG. 2, a package 10 for an aerosol delivery system component or article (not shown) is shown. Package 10 includes a container 11, shown in dashed lines. In this embodiment, container 11 is a hinged lid container, although it will be appreciated that other configurations of container 11 may form part of package 10. In the illustrated embodiment, container 11 includes a body 12 and a lid 13 connected along hinge line 14. Container 11 includes access opening 15. Access opening 15 is provided by rotating lid 13 about hinge line 14 relative to body 12 of container 11. Hinge lid containers are also known as flip lid containers; that is, the lid is flipped open by rotating lid 13 about hinge line 14.

[0052] The package further includes an inner pack 20. The inner pack 20 is disposed within the container 11 such that the inner pack 20 is accessible via the access opening 15, i.e., when the lid 13 is rotated from a closed position to the open position shown in Figure 2, the access opening 15 is provided and the inner pack 20 is accessible to a user. The inner pack 20 includes a sheet material 21 configured to form the inner pack 20.

[0053] The inner pack 20 includes a first end wall 22. The first end wall 22 is proximal to the access opening 15. The inner pack further includes a second end wall 23. The second end wall 23 is distal to the access opening 15. The second end wall 23 is longitudinally spaced from the first end wall 22. That is, the package 10 and / or inner pack 20 includes a longitudinal axis along which the greatest dimension of the package 10 and / or inner pack 20 extends, and the first and second end walls 22, 23 are spaced apart along this axis.

[0054] As shown in FIG. 2, the first end wall 22 includes a first flap 25 and a second flap 26. The first and second flaps 25, 26 of the first end wall 22 extend from opposite sides of the first end wall 22. That is, the first flap 25 extends from a first side 22a of the first end wall 22 and the second flap extends from a second opposite side 22b of the first end wall 22. The first and second flaps 25, 26 are bonded together and configured to seal the inner pack 20. The first and second flaps 25, 26 may be attached to each other using an adhesive 29. The adhesive 29 may be applied between the first and second flaps 25, 26 such that the first and second flaps 25, 26 form a seal to prevent or at least reduce breathability of the inner pack 20. The adhesive 29 may be disposed on an inner surface of the first flap 25 of the first end wall 22. The adhesive 29 may be disposed on an outer surface of the second flap 26 of the first end wall 22.

[0055] As shown in FIG. 2, similar to each of the inner packs described below, inner pack 20 includes a plurality of side walls extending between a first end wall 22 and a second end wall 23. In the illustrated embodiment, as well as the embodiments described below, inner pack 20 has a cubical shape. Thus, inner pack 20 and the embodiments described below include a first side wall 31, a second side wall 32, a third side wall 33, and a fourth side wall 34. Inner pack 20 includes opposing first and second side walls 31, 32 and opposing third and fourth side walls 33, 34.

[0056] The inner pack 20 further includes first, second, third and fourth top edges 35a, 36a, 37a, 38a where the first, second, third and fourth side walls 31, 32, 33, 34 meet at the first end wall 22. Thus, the first side 22a of the first end wall 22 is defined by the first top edge 35a and the second side 22b of the first end wall 22 is defined by the second top edge 36a. The inner pack 20 further includes first, second, third and fourth bottom edges 35b, 36b, 37b, 38b where the first, second, third and fourth side walls meet at the second end wall 23.

[0057] It will be appreciated that in other embodiments, the inner pack 20 may have a different prismatic shape, such as, but not limited to, a hexagonal prism, and in such embodiments, it will be appreciated that the inner pack 20 further includes additional side walls and top and bottom edges, etc.

[0058] The first end wall 22 further includes third and fourth flaps 27, 28 extending from third and fourth top edges 37a, 38a formed by the flaps 27, 28 with third and fourth side walls 33, 34. The third and fourth flaps may include an adhesive 29 to seal the first end wall 22. Thus, each flap 26, 27, 28 overlapped by the first flap 25 of the first end wall 22 is secured to the other flap by the adhesive 29 to seal the inner pack 20.

[0059] 3, the sheet material 21 of the inner pack 20 includes a portion 40 that is at least partially separable from the remaining portion 41 of the sheet material 21 of the inner pack 20. The portion 40 is at least partially separable from the remaining portion 41 of the sheet material 21 of the inner pack 20 to enable the inner pack 20 to be opened and the inside of the inner pack 20 to be accessed to access the aerosol delivery system components or articles contained therein. The portion 40 of the sheet material 21 that is at least partially separable from the remaining portion 41 of the sheet material 21 of the inner pack 20 includes the first flap 25 of the first end wall 22.

[0060] As shown in Figures 2 and 3, the first flap 25 of the first end wall 22 is larger than the second flap 26 of the first end wall 22. Referring generally to Figure 3, in which the first and second flaps 25, 26 of the first end wall 22 are shown in an unfolded state, the first flap 25 is larger than the second flap 26, as will be described in more detail below.

[0061] 2, it can be seen that the first flap 25 is larger than the second flap 26 such that the first flap 25 is configured to extend substantially across the first end wall 22 of the inner pack 20 toward the opposite side 22b of the first end wall 22. That is, the first flap 25 extends from the first side 22a, i.e., the first top edge 35a, of the first end wall 22 substantially across the first end wall 22 toward the second opposite side 22b, i.e., the second top edge 36a of the first end wall 22. Thus, the first flap 25 of the first end wall 22 overlaps substantially all of the second flap 26 of the first end wall 22. The overlap width of the first flap with the second flap may be more than 5 mm, optionally between 5 mm and 25 mm, preferably between 5 mm and 20 mm and optionally between 7 mm and 15 mm.

[0062] The above statement that the first flap 25 of the first end wall 22 is larger than the second flap 26 of the first end wall 22 refers to the first flap 25 of the first end wall 22 and the second flap 26 of the first end wall 22 being larger than the first flap 26 of the first end wall 22. DepartmentThis means that the distance between the second flap 26 of the first end wall 22 and its opposite side, i.e., the first upper edge 35a or the first side 22a of the first end wall 22, is less than the distance between the second flap 26 of the first end wall 22 and its opposite side, i.e., the first upper edge 35a or the first side 22a of the first end wall 22.

[0063] The first flap 25 of the first end wall 22 includes a first portion 43 and a second portion 44. The first portion 43 of the first flap 25 is secured to the second flap 26 of the first end wall 22. The second portion 44 of the first flap 25 is not secured to the second flap 26 of the first end wall 22. That is, the adhesive 29 affixes the first portion 43 of the first flap 25 to the second flap 26 of the first end wall 22. Thus, the second portion 44 of the first flap 25 is not secured to the second flap 26 of the first end wall 22 such that the second portion of the first flap is free to move. The second portion 44 of the first flap 25 is configured to be pulled by a user to at least partially separate the portion 40 of the sheet material 21 from the remaining portion 41 of the sheet material 21 of the inner pack 20 to open the inner pack 20 and access the inside of the inner pack 20.

[0064] The first flap 25 of the first end wall 22 includes a fold line 45. The fold line 45 defines one end of the first flap 25. The fold line 45 may be located at the first side 22a of the first end wall 22. That is, the fold line 45 is located at the first top edge 35a of the inner pack 20. The first portion 43 of the first flap 25 is located between the fold line 45 and the second portion 44 of the first flap 25. The second portion 44 of the first flap 25 thus forms a free end 46 of the first flap 25. The free end 46 of the first flap 25 includes a free edge 47.

[0065] To open the inner pack 20 so as to access the interior of the inner pack 20, a consumer places a finger under the free end 46 of the first flap 25 and grasps the second portion 44 of the first flap 25. The consumer then pulls on the second portion 44 of the first flap 25, breaking the seal provided by the adhesive 29 between the first portion 43 of the first flap 25 and the second flap 26 of the first end wall 22 of the inner pack 20.

[0066] The consumer pulls on the second portion 44 of the first flap 25 in the direction shown by arrow A in Figure 2. That is, the consumer rotates the second portion 44 of the first flap 25 about the fold line 45 of the first flap 25 of the first end wall 22. As described above, this rotation breaks the seal formed by the adhesive 29 between the first and second flaps 25, 26, partially separating portion 40, i.e. the first flap 25 of the first end wall 22, from the remaining portion 41, i.e. the second flap 26 of the first end wall 22 of the inner pack 20, allowing access to the inside of the inner pack 20.

[0067] Once the seal formed by the adhesive 29 between the first and second flaps 25, 26 is broken, the first, second, third and fourth flaps 25, 26, 27, 28 all spread apart as shown by arrow B in FIG. 3 to provide an entrance 49 to the inside of the inner pack 20.

[0068] In this embodiment, the inner pack 20 may be resealed by folding the flaps 25, 26, 27, 28 and applying pressure to the adhesive 29 so that the first and second flaps 25, 26 reseal. Thus, the adhesive 29 is preferably a cold seal adhesive, more preferably a resealable cold seal adhesive. The resealable cold seal adhesive may be, for example, but not limited to, an adhesive derived from natural rubber, latex, resin, PVA or Loctite Liofol CS 22-861US1. The cold seal adhesive may be selected to meet the required properties. The cold seal adhesive may be extrudable, water-based, or solvent-based with peelable, resealable or permanent sealability. Cold seal adhesives are generally easy to process at high speed printing, have a long shelf life on a reel of sheet material, are resealable after application to the sheet material, and are approved for direct food contact. Cold seal adhesives are applied to both bonding surfaces and require only contact and / or pressure to bond to form a seal, i.e., cold seal adhesives do not require heat to activate the adhesive.

[0069] 9 and 10, there is shown another embodiment of an inner pack 50 in accordance with the present invention. The inner pack 50 shown in Figures 9 and 10 is substantially similar to the embodiment of inner pack 20 described above, and therefore a detailed description will not be provided here. Furthermore, like terms and reference numbers are used for features and components of inner pack 50 that are similar to features and components of inner pack 20.

[0070] Figure 9 shows a blank 51 used to form the inner pack 50. Figure 10 shows the blank 51 assembled to form the inner pack 50. In this embodiment of the inner pack 50, the first flap 25 of the first end wall 22 further includes a tab 52. The tab 52 extends from the free edge 47 of the second portion 45 of the first flap 25. The tab 52 is configured to be pulled by a user to open the inner pack 50 in a manner similar to the embodiment of the inner pack 20 described above.

[0071] In some embodiments in which the first flap 25 of the first end wall 22 includes a tab 52, the adhesive 29 forming the seal between the first and second flaps 25, 26 of the first end wall 22 may be disposed on both the first and second portions 43, 44 of the first flap 25 or only on the first portion 43 of the first flap 25. However, in the present embodiment, the adhesive 29 is shown as forming the seal between the first portion 43 of the first flap 25 and the second flap 26 of the first end wall 22.

[0072] The tab 52 is an easy-to-read extension of the first flap 25 of the first end wall 22, making the consumable easier to identify and open the inner pack 50. Additionally, the tab 52 may include at least one indicia 53. The at least one indicia 53 may be configured to provide a consumer with information regarding how to open the inner pack 50 to access the inside of the inner pack 50. The at least one indicia 53 may be in the form of printed or embossed instructions, such as, but not limited to, text, a logo, an arrow, or a color that identifies the tab 52 or indicates which direction to move the tab.

[0073] The tab 52 may extend from a central portion 54 of the free end 46 of the first flap 25 as shown in Figures 9 and 10. However, it should be appreciated that the tab 52 may be off-center relative to the free edge 47 of the first flap 25 in alternative embodiments. Furthermore, in this embodiment, the tab 52 has a semicircular shape. However, in alternative embodiments, the tab 52 may have any shape, such as, but not limited to, a square, a triangle, or a rectangle.

[0074] In some embodiments, the tab 52 may extend from the free edge 47 of the first flap 25 of the first end wall 22 beyond the second side 22b or the second top edge 36a of the first end wall 22. Thus, a section 55 of the tab 52 may protrude from the second side 22b of the first end wall 22. Thus, when the inner pack 50 is located inside the container 11, the section 55 of the tab 52 may extend into the lid 13 when the lid 13 is in its open position. The protruding section 55 of the tab 52 facilitates grasping the first flap 25 of the first end wall 22 and opening the inner pack 50 to access the inside of the inner pack 50.

[0075] The inner pack 50 may further include a cut-out section 56. The cut-out section 56 is formed in the second flap 26 of the first end wall 22, against which the first flap 25 of the first end wall 22 overlaps when the inner pack 50 is sealed. With reference to the blank 51 of sheet material 21 in FIG. 9, it can be seen that the cut-out section 56 is in the second flap 26 of the first end wall 22. The cut-out section 56 corresponds to the tab 52 located at the free end 46 of the first flap 25 of the first end wall 22. That is, the position, shape and size of the cut-out section 56 of the second flap 26 are the same as the position, shape and size of the tab 52 of the first flap 25. The blank 51 of sheet material 21 from which the inner pack 51 is formed is therefore tessellated from the web 21 of sheet material. Therefore, no material is wasted in making the inner pack 50.

[0076] This embodiment of the inner pack 50 is opened in the same manner as the inner pack 20 described above and will not be described in detail. In general terms, a consumer looking at the inner pack 50 will notice at least one indicia 53 on the tab 52 which conveys to the consumer the information that the inner pack 50 may be opened by pulling on the tab 52 of the inner pack 50 and moving the tab 52 in the direction of arrow C shown in Figure 10. The seal formed by the adhesive 29 holding the first and second flaps 25, 26 of the first end wall 22 is broken by rotating the first flap 25 away from the second flap 26, causing each of the end wall flaps 25, 26, 27, 28 to fold open to provide access to the interior of the inner pack 50 (not shown in Figure 10).

[0077] 4 and 5, there is shown another embodiment of an inner pack 60 according to the present invention. The inner pack 60 shown in Figures 4 and 5 is substantially similar to the embodiments of inner packs 20, 50 described above, and therefore a detailed description will not be given here. Furthermore, the same terms and reference numbers are used for features and components of inner pack 60 that are the same as features and components of inner packs 20, 50.

[0078] 4, the inner pack 60 of the package 10 further includes a first line of weakness 61. The first line of weakness 61 is configured to facilitate separation of the portion 40 of the sheet material 21 from the remaining portion 41 of the sheet material 21 of the inner pack 60 to provide access to the inner pack 60. That is, the first line of weakness 61 separates the portion 40 of the first end wall 22, including the first flap 25, from the remaining portion 41 of the inner pack 60.

[0079] Thus, in this embodiment, when a consumer pulls on the first flap 25 of the first end wall 22, the portion 40 including the first flap 25 is disengaged from the remaining portion 41 of the inner pack 60, permanently breaking the seal of the inner pack 60. In some embodiments including the first line of weakness 61, the adhesive 29 forming the seal between the first and second flaps 25, 26 of the first end wall 22 may be a permanent adhesive such as, for example, but not limited to, a natural rubber based adhesive, a latex based adhesive, a cellulose based adhesive, a resin based adhesive, a polypropylene ("PP") based adhesive, a polyethylene ("PE") based adhesive, a polyethylene terephthalate ("PET") based adhesive, a polyvinyl alcohol ("PVA") based adhesive, or the like.

[0080] In the embodiment shown in FIG. 4, the first line of weakness 61 extends at least partially around at least one of the side walls 31, 32, 33, 34 to define a portion 40 of the inner pack 60 that is separable from the remaining portion 41 of the sheet material 21.

[0081] In this embodiment the first line of weakness 61 extends at least partially across the first side wall 31 of the inner pack 60. The first line of weakness 61 is therefore configured such that the portion 40 separable from the remainder of the sheet material 21 includes the first flap 25 of the first end wall 22 and a portion 62 of the first side wall 31.

[0082] Further, in this embodiment, the first line of weakness 61 extends from the leading edge of the first flap 25 partially along the first edge 35a between the first end wall 22 and the first side wall 31. The first flap 25 of the inner pack 60 includes a leading edge where the first edge 35a meets the third edge 37a and the fourth edge 38a at first and second corners 64, 65, respectively. Thus, the first line of weakness 61 may extend from the leading edge in the configuration of the first corner 64 along the first edge 35a towards the second corner 65 of the inner pack 60. Further, the first line of weakness 61 may also extend from the leading edge in the configuration of the second corner 65 along the first edge 35a. In some embodiments, the first line of weakness 61 may be configured to separate the first flap 25 from the third and fourth flaps 27, 28.

[0083] A first line of weakness extends into the first side wall 31 of the inner pack 60 between tips 64, 65 of the first edge 35a of the inner pack 60. As shown in FIG. 4, the first line of weakness 61 extending through the first side wall 31 is substantially "U-shaped". That is, the section of the first line of weakness 61 extending through the first side wall 31 includes a lower portion 67, a first side portion 68, and a second side portion 69. The U-shape of the line of weakness 61 is advantageous because it allows a substantial portion 62 of the first side wall 31 to be removed, making it easier to access the inner members or articles of the inner pack 60.

[0084] In this embodiment, the lower portion 67 of the first line of weakness 61 extends parallel to the first upper edge 35a of the inner pack 60. Additionally, the first and second side portions 68, 69 of the first line of weakness 61 extend at an angle relative to the first upper edge 35a of the inner pack 60. As shown in FIG. 4, the first and second side portions 68, 69 extend outwardly toward the first and second corners 64, 65, respectively, of the first flap 25. Preferably, the first and second side portions 68, 69 of the first line of weakness 61 have a draft of between 10 degrees and 40 degrees relative to the longitudinal axis X of the inner pack 60. The draft of the first and second side portions 68, 69 facilitates separation of the portion 40 of the sheet material 21 of the first side wall 31 from the remaining portion 41 of the inner pack 60.

[0085] The inner pack 60 is opened in the same manner as the inner pack 20 described with reference to Figure 2. The consumer pulls on the second portion 44 of the first flap 25 of the first end wall 22, causing the first flap 25 to rotate in the direction shown by arrow D in Figure 4. This movement breaks the seal formed by the flaps 25, 26 of the one end wall 22, and the consumer then pulls the first flap 25 upwards in the direction of the X axis, as shown by arrow E in Figure 5, removing portion 40 from the remaining portion 41 of the inner pack 60, as will be explained in more detail below.

[0086] 5, it can be seen that the inner pack 60 may further include a second line of weakness 72 and has been broken by removing the separable portion 40 from the remainder 41 of the inner pack 60. The second line of weakness 72 is configured such that the separable portion 40 from the remainder 41 of the sheet material 21 includes the first flap 25, a portion 62 of the first side wall 31 and a portion of the second flap 26 of the first end wall 22.

[0087] In another embodiment, the second line of weakness 72 may be omitted. In such an embodiment, the portion 40 of the sheet material 21 that is separable from the remainder 41 of the pack 60 may be removed by breaking the first line of weakness 61 and the adhesive seal 29. In such an embodiment, the adhesive 29 may be formed from a non-permanent or peel-off adhesive. Further, in such an embodiment, the portion 40 that is separable from the remainder 41 of the inner pack 60 may not include a portion of the second flap 26 of the first end wall 22. Further, in another embodiment in which the adhesive seal is formed from a permanent adhesive, that portion of the second flap 26 may be torn from the remainder of the second flap 26.

[0088] In this embodiment, the second flap 26 of the first end wall 22 includes a first portion 73, best seen in Figure 5, and a second portion 74 separated by a second line of weakness 72. The first portion 73 of the second flap 26 is secured to the first flap 25 of the first end wall 22 by adhesive 29. The second line of weakness 72 is configured such that the portion of the second flap 26 that forms part of the portion 40 of the sheet material 21 that is separable from the remainder 41 of the pack 60 is the first portion 73 of the second flap 26 that is affixed to the first flap 25 by adhesive 29.

[0089] 4, it can be seen that the first line of weakness 61 may extend from the first corner 64 of the first flap 25 along the third upper edge 37a towards the second upper edge 36a, such that at least a portion of the third flap of the first end wall 22 also forms part of the portion 40 separable from the remainder 41 of the inner pack 60. That is, the first line of weakness 61 may extend from the first edge 35a at least partially along the third edge 37a. Similarly, the first line of weakness 61 may extend from the second corner 65 of the first flap 25 along the fourth upper edge 38a towards the second upper edge 36a, such that at least a portion of the fourth flap of the first end wall 22 also forms part of the portion 40 separable from the remainder 41 of the inner pack 60. That is, the first line of weakness 61 may extend at least partially along the first edge 35a to the fourth edge 38a.

[0090] 5 shows the remaining portion 41 of the pack 60 when the portion 40 of the first end wall 22 including the third and fourth flaps 27, 28 has been removed from the inner pack 60. In such an embodiment, the first and second lines of weakness 61, 72 may be integrally formed. For example, the first line of weakness 61 may extend across the first end wall 22 to an end of the second line of weakness 72, and alternatively, the second line of weakness 72 may extend across the first end wall 22 to an end of the first line of weakness 61 at an edge or side wall of the first end wall 22. The first and second lines of weakness 61, 72 may be integrally formed such that they form one continuous line of weakness. For clarity, the third and fourth flaps 27, 28, which form part of portion 40, have been omitted from the illustration of portion 40 shown in FIG. 5 to show portion 40 including only the first flap 25 of the first end wall 22, the portion 62 of the first side wall 31, and the first portion 73 of the second flap 26 of the first end wall 22.

[0091] 15a-15c, the package 10 further includes an inner frame 80. In one embodiment, the inner frame 80 is configured to be positioned at least partially around the inner pack 60. In another embodiment, the inner frame 80 is configured to be positioned inside the inner pack 60.

[0092] Referring to Figure 15a, the inner frame 80 includes a first side wall 81 and opposing side walls 82, 83. The first side wall 81 is configured to lie against or at least parallel to the first side wall 31 of the inner package 60 as shown in Figure 15b. The opposing side walls 82, 83 extend from opposing sides of the first side wall 81 of the inner frame 80. The first opposing side wall 82 is configured to lie against or at least parallel to the third side wall 33 of the inner pack 60 as shown in Figure 15b. The second opposing side wall 83 is configured to lie against or at least parallel to the fourth side wall 34 of the inner pack 60 as shown in Figure 15b.

[0093] 15c, at least a portion 85 of the inner frame 80 is configured to be separated from the remaining portion of the inner frame 80 when the portion 40 of the inner pack 60 is separated from the remaining portion 86 of the inner frame 80. The portion 85 of the inner frame 80 configured to be separated from the remaining portion 86 of the inner frame 80 is fixed to the portion 40 of the inner pack 60. The portion 85 of the inner frame 80 that is separable from the remaining portion 86 of the inner frame 80 may be fixed by an adhesive 87 to the portion 40 of the sheet material 21 that is separable from the remaining portion 41 of the pack 60. Thus, removing the portion 40 of the inner pack 60 that is separable from the remaining portion 41 of the pack 60 separates the portion 85 of the inner frame 80 from the remaining portion 86 of the inner frame 80.

[0094] The inner frame 80 provides the advantage of providing improved structural support to the inner pack 60. That is, the inner frame 80 helps to maintain the structure of the entrance 49 to the interior of the inner pack 60 that is presented to the consumer when the portion 40 of sheet material that is separable from the remaining portion 41 of the inner pack 60 is removed.

[0095] The inner frame 80 may further include a third line of weakness 88 that defines a portion 85 of the inner frame 80 that is configured to be separated from a remaining portion 86 of the inner frame 80. The third line of weakness 88 of the inner frame 80 may overlap the first line of weakness 61 of the first side wall 31 of the inner pack 60. That is, the shape of the portion 85 of the inner frame 80 that is separable from the remaining portion 86 of the inner frame 80 may correspond to the shape of the portion 40 of the inner pack 60 that is separable from the remaining portion 41 of the pack 60 that the inner frame 80 overlaps. Thus, all of the portion 85 of the inner frame 80 that is separable from the remaining portion 86 of the inner frame 80 may be attached to the portion 40 of the sheet material 21 that is separable from the remaining portion of the inner pack 60. The adhesive may be a permanent adhesive. In some embodiments, only a portion of the portion 85 may be attached to the portion 40 with a permanent adhesive.

[0096] 6 and 7, there is shown another embodiment of an inner pack 90 according to the present invention. The inner pack 90 shown in Figures 6 and 7 is substantially similar to the embodiments of inner packs 20, 50, 60 described above, and therefore a detailed description will not be given here. Furthermore, like terms and reference numerals are used for features and components of inner pack 90 that are similar to features and components of inner packs 20, 50, 60.

[0097] 6, the first line of weakness 61 extends across the first side wall 31 of the inner pack 90 and at least partially across the third and fourth side walls 33, 34. The portion 40 that is separable from the remaining portion 41 of the sheet material 21 thus includes the first flap 25, the first portion 73 of the second flap 26 of the first end wall 22, part 62 of the first side wall 31, at least a portion 91 of the third side wall 33, and at least a portion 92 of the fourth side wall 34, as shown in FIG.

[0098] As shown above, in FIG. 6 the third side wall 33 includes an outer flap 93 and an inner flap 94 that are sealed together to form a side seal. Preferably the side seal is formed with an adhesive as described in more detail below. As also shown above, in FIG. 6 the fourth side wall 34 includes an outer flap 95 and an inner flap 96 that are sealed together to form a side seal. Preferably the side seal is formed with an adhesive as described in more detail below. In some embodiments the first line of weakness 61 is configured to extend across the third and fourth side walls 33, 34 such that portions 91, 92 of the third and fourth side walls 33, 34 of the portion 40 that is separated from the remaining portion 41 of the sheet material 21 include the outer flap 93 of the third side wall 33 and the outer flap 95 of the fourth side wall 34.

[0099] In another embodiment, the first line of weakness 61 is configured to extend across the third and fourth side walls 33, 34 such that portions 91, 92 of the third and fourth side walls 33, 34 of the portion 40 that is separated from the remaining portion 41 of the sheet material 21 include at least a portion of the outer flap 93 and the inner flap 94 of the third side wall 33 and at least a portion of the outer flap 95 and the inner flap 96 of the fourth side wall 34.

[0100] In this embodiment, the first line of weakness 61 extending through the first side wall 33 is parallel to but extends away from the first edge 35a of the inner pack 90. Additionally, the first line of weakness 61 extending through the third and fourth side walls 33, 34 also extends parallel to the third and fourth edges 37a, 38a of the inner pack 90. Thus, the line of weakness 61 may be substantially straight. This is particularly true where the line of weakness 61 is formed in a blank of the sheet material 21 before the inner pack is formed. Straight lines of weakness 61 are advantageous as they are easier to machine. In this embodiment, the portion 40 of the sheet material 21 which is separable from the remainder 41 of the inner pack 90 may be removed by separating that portion 40 from the remainder 41 along the lines of weakness 61 and, if necessary, along the side seals between the outer and inner flaps 93, 94, 95, 96 of the third and fourth side walls 33, 34 and the top seal formed by the adhesive 29.

[0101] Referring now to Figure 8, there is shown another embodiment of an inner pack 100 according to the present invention. The inner pack 100 shown in Figure 8 is substantially similar to the embodiments of inner packs 20, 50, 60, 90 described above, and therefore a detailed description will not be given here. Furthermore, like terms and reference numbers are used for features and components of inner pack 100 that are similar to features and components of inner packs 20, 50, 60, 90.

[0102] In this embodiment, the first line of weakness 61 extends around each of the side walls 31, 32, 33, 34. That is, the first line of weakness 61 extends through the first side wall 31, the second side wall 32, the third side wall 33 and the fourth side wall 34. Thus, the portion 40 of the sheet material 21 that is separable from the remaining portion 41 of the inner pack 100 includes the first end wall 22 and each of the side walls 31, 32, 33, 34. In this embodiment, the portion 40 of the sheet material 21 can be removed without separating the seal formed by the adhesive 29. Thus, the adhesive used may be a non-peeling adhesive to ensure that it is the line of weakness 61 that breaks and not the seal formed by the adhesive 29. In one embodiment, the first line of weakness 61 extends parallel to but away from the corresponding edge 35a, 36a, 37a, 38a as it extends through the sidewalls 31, 32, 33, 34, respectively.

[0103] 11-14b, there is shown another embodiment of a package 110 in accordance with the present invention. The package 110 shown in Figures 11-14b is substantially similar to the embodiment of package 10 described above, and therefore a detailed description will not be provided here. Furthermore, like terms and reference numerals are used to refer to features and components of package 110 that are similar to those of package 10.

[0104] The package 110 includes a container 11 having a dispensing opening 15 (shown in FIG. 2). The package 110 further includes an inner pack 120. The inner pack 120 is configured to be positioned within the container 11 such that the inner pack 120 is accessible via the dispensing opening 15. The inner pack 120 includes a sheet material 21 configured to form the inner pack 120. The inner pack 120 further includes a tear strip 121 configured such that, in use, the tear strip 121 can be pulled such that the tear strip 121 is at least partially separable from a remaining portion 41 of the inner pack 120 such that a portion 40 of the sheet material 21 is accessible to the inside of the inner pack 120.

[0105] 11, there is shown a blank 125 for forming the inner pack 120. The blank 125 includes a tear strip 121 located at one end of the blank 125.

[0106] Referring to Figure 12, the inner pack 120 is shown in an assembled state. The inner pack 120 includes a first end wall 22 and a second end wall 23. The first and second end walls 22, 23 are separated by a plurality of side walls 31, 32, 33, 34. The tear strip 121 extends along at least one of the plurality of side walls 31, 32, 33, 34. Preferably, the tear strip 121 extends across each of the plurality of side walls 31, 32, 33, 34 such that the portion 40 of the sheet material 21 is completely separable from the remainder 41 of the inner pack 120.

[0107] The tear strip 121 extends parallel to the top edges 35a, 36a, 37a, 38a of the inner pack 120 at each of the side walls 31, 32, 33, 34 along which the tear strip 121 extends. The tear strip 121 may further include a tab 127 at one end 128 of the tear strip 121 that is configured such that, in use, a user can grasp the tab 127 to pull the tear strip 121 and access the inside of the inner pack 120. The tear strip 121 may be formed by parallel lines of weakness extending around at least one of the side walls 31, 32, 33, 34.

[0108] Similar to package 10 described above, the inner pack 120 of package 110 is sealed. That is, the first end wall 22 of the inner pack 120 includes a first flap 25 and a second flap 26 extending from opposite edges 35a, 36a of the first end wall 22 and secured to one another. The first and second flaps 25, 26 of the first end wall 22 are secured together with an adhesive 29. In this embodiment illustrated in FIG. 12, the tear strip 121 is located proximal to the first end wall 22. Furthermore, in this embodiment illustrated in FIG. 12, the first end wall 22 of the inner pack 120 is located proximal to the access opening 15 of the package 110.

[0109] In some embodiments, package 110 may further include an inner frame (not shown), which may be positioned at least partially around inner pack 120. However, the inner frame is spaced from first end wall 22 proximal to dispensing opening 15 such that a top of the inner frame is farther from first end wall 22 than tear strip 121 so that tear strip 121 is accessible to a consumer.

[0110] 13-14b, there is shown an alternative embodiment of an inner pack 130. The inner pack 130 is substantially similar to the inner pack 120 described above, except for the location of the tear strip 121. Figure 13 shows a blank 135 for forming the inner pack 130.

[0111] Figures 14a and 14b show the inner pack 130 in an assembled state. Figure 14a is a bottom perspective view of the inner pack 130. That is, in this embodiment, the tear strip 121 is located proximal to the second end wall 23, i.e., closer to the second end wall 23 than the first end wall 22. Therefore, the inner pack 130 must be inverted relative to the inner pack 120 shown in Figure 12 so that the tear strip 121 is proximal to the access opening 15 of the package 110. Thus, in this embodiment illustrated in Figure 14a, the second end wall 23 of the inner pack 130 is located proximal to the access opening 15 of the package 110. This provides the advantage that the inner pack 130 is positioned within the package 110 such that, upon opening the package 110, the consumer is presented with an end of the inner pack that is free of creases and / or flaps. This may improve aesthetics and / or perception for some consumers.

[0112] In some embodiments, the package 110 may further include an inner frame (not shown). The inner frame may be positioned at least partially around the inner pack 130. However, the inner frame is spaced from the second end wall 23 proximal to the dispensing opening 15 such that a top of the inner frame is farther from the second end wall 23 than the tear strip 121 so that the tear strip 121 is accessible to the consumer.

[0113] In some embodiments the lines of weakness 61, 72 may extend without passing through the sheet material 21 of the inner pack 60, 90, 120, 130. Referring to Figure 22, an inner wrapper 140 for an aerosol delivery system or article can be produced by providing a sheet material 21 to be assembled into an inner pack and providing one or more deformations 141 that do not traverse the thickness of the sheet material completely so that when the sheet material is assembled into the inner pack, the sheet material can tear along the one or more deformations 141 such that a portion of the sheet material is at least partially separated from the remainder of the sheet material and is accessible to the inside of the inner pack.

[0114] An inner wrapper 140 for forming an inner pack for an aerosol delivery system component or article comprises a sheet material for assembly into the inner pack, the sheet material including one or more deformations 141 that do not traverse the thickness of the sheet material completely, such that when the inner wrapper is assembled into the inner pack, a portion of the sheet material is at least partially separated from the remainder of the sheet material and the sheet material can be torn along the one or more deformations so that the inside of the inner pack can be accessed.

[0115] In other embodiments, the lines of weakness 61, 72 may extend through the sheet material 21 of the inner pack 60, 90, 120, 130. Referring to Figure 23, an inner wrapper 150 for an aerosol delivery system or article can be manufactured by providing a sheet material 21 to be assembled into an inner pack, providing one or more cuts 151 through the thickness of the sheet material such that when the sheet material is assembled into the inner pack, the sheet material can be torn along the one or more cuts such that a portion of the sheet material is at least partially separated from the remainder of the sheet material and is accessible to the inside of the inner pack, and sealing the one or more cuts using a sealing material 152.

[0116] Thus, the inner pack 60, 90, 120, 130 may further include an adhesive layer 152 disposed inside the inner pack 60, 90, 120, 130 and covering the lines of weakness 61, 72. The adhesive layer 152 is configured to seal the inner pack 60, 90, 120, 130 and at least reduce breathability of the inner pack 60, 90, 120, 130 to help maintain the freshness of the contents of the inner pack 60, 90, 120, 130. The adhesive layer 152 may include a heat activated adhesive.

[0117] An inner wrapper 150 for forming an inner pack for an aerosol delivery system component or article includes a sheet material for assembly into the inner pack, the sheet material including one or more cuts 151 and a sealant 152 applied over the one or more cuts to seal the one or more cuts, the one or more cuts penetrating a thickness of the sheet material such that, when the inner wrapper is assembled into the inner pack, a portion of the sheet material is at least partially separated from the remainder of the sheet material and can be torn along the one or more cuts to access the inside of the inner pack.

[0118] In some embodiments, the first and second lines of weakness 61, 72 may be formed by laser scoring or by partial laser scoring. In other embodiments, the first and / or second lines of weakness 61, 72 may be formed by deformations in the sheet material 21 created by an embossing roller. The embossing roller may deform the sheet material 21 of the inner pack 60, 90, 120, 130 by cutting, embossing, scoring or partially cutting the sheet material 21.

[0119] In some embodiments, the sheet material 21 includes permanent creases. The sheet material 21 may have a basis weight of 75 grams per square meter or less. Additionally, in some embodiments, the inner packs 20, 60, 90, 120, 130 are hermetically sealed.

[0120] 16-21, inner wrapper construction and gluing options for the inner pack are shown in schematic form.

[0128] 17, the inner package is formed from a blank 160 of sheet material 21 that includes adhesive 170 that secures the flaps together. The adhesive 170 includes a first area of adhesive 171 located on the outer flap of the blank 160 and a second area of adhesive 172 located on the inner flap of the blank 160.

[0129] In this embodiment, a first region of adhesive 171 is located on the inner surface of the flap, as shown by the cross-hatching in Figure 17, and a second region of adhesive 172 is located on the outer surface of the flap, as shown by the cross-hatching in Figure 17. The first and second regions of adhesive 171, 172 are positioned such that when the inner pack is in an assembled state, the first and second regions of adhesive 171, 172 contact each other.

[0130] In this embodiment, the first region of adhesive 171 forms a continuous region of adhesive over the inner surfaces of the first flap 25 of the first end wall 22, the outer flaps 161, 163 of the third and fourth flaps 27, 28 of the first end wall 22, and the outer flaps 93, 95 of the third and fourth side walls 33, 34. [0131] In this embodiment, the adhesive 170 is a cold seal adhesive. The cold seal adhesive may be, for example, but not limited to, an adhesive derived from natural rubber, latex, resin, PVA or Locitie Liofol CS 22-861US1. The cold seal adhesive may be selected to meet the desired properties. The cold seal adhesive may be extrudable, water-based, or solvent based with peelable, resealable or permanent sealability. Cold seal adhesives are generally easy to process at high speed presses, have a long shelf life on a reel of sheet material, are resealable after being applied to the sheet material, and are approved for direct food contact. The cold seal adhesive is applied to both adhesive surfaces and requires only contact and / or pressure to bond to form a seal. That is, cold seal adhesives do not require heat to activate the adhesive.

[0132] Referring now to Figure 18, the blank 160 is the same as that shown in Figures 16 and 17. However, the gluing pattern is different. In this embodiment, the inner pack includes inner flaps 162, 164 of the third and fourth flaps 27, 28 of the first end wall 22, inner flaps 94, 96 of the third and fourth side walls 33, 34 and a second area 172 of adhesive located on the outer surface of the second flap 26 of the first end wall 22.

[0133] Further, in this embodiment, first regions 171 of adhesive are located at the folds 166 of the first flap 25 of the first end wall 22 and at the folds 168 of the outer flaps 93,95 of the third and fourth side walls 33,34.

[0134] In this embodiment, the adhesive 170 is a heat seal adhesive. The heat seal adhesive may be, but is not limited to, polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastics, Loctite Liofol HS 2809-22 RE, or a cellulosic coating. PP, PE and PET plastic based heat seal adhesives have low sealing temperatures. Cellulosic coatings can be used as heat seal solutions and are recyclable. Heat seal adhesives only need to be placed on the bonding surface and require less dosage than cold seal adhesives. Additionally, heat seal adhesives do not bond or "stick" until heat is applied. Thus, hot seal adhesives reduce the complication factor during manufacturing of the inner pack.

[0135] 19, there is shown a blank 180 for forming the inner packs 20, 60, 90, 120, 130. When the blank 160 is assembled into the inner pack, the inner pack includes first and second opposing side walls 31, 32 and third and fourth opposing side walls 33, 34. [0141] Thus, as described above, the inner pack includes the first and second flaps 25, 26 of the first end wall 22, the first and second flaps 181, 182 of the second end wall 23, the first, second and third side walls 31, 32 and 33. The inner pack also includes a fourth side wall 34 formed by the outer and inner flaps 95, 96. The inner pack also includes a third flap 27 of the first end wall 22 and a fourth flap 28 of the first end wall 22 formed by the outer and inner flaps 163, 164.

[0142] The inner pack also includes a third flap 183 of the second end wall 23 and a fourth flap 184 of the second end wall 23 formed by an outer flap 185 and an inner flap 186. The inner pack also includes a fold 166 of the first flap 25 of the first end wall 22 and a fold 167 of the second flap 26 of the first end wall 22. The inner pack also includes a fold 191 of the first flap 181 of the second end wall 23 and a fold 192 of the second flap 182 of the second end wall 23.

[0143] 20, in this embodiment a first region of adhesive 171 is disposed on the first flap 25 of the first end wall 22, the first flap 181 of the second end wall 23 and the inner surface of the outer flap 95 of the fourth side wall 34. Additionally, in this embodiment a second region of adhesive 172 is disposed on the outer surface of the inner flap 96 of the fourth side wall 34 and the second flaps 26, 182 and third flaps 27, 183 of the first and second end walls 22, 23.

[0144] In this embodiment, the adhesive 170 on the first flaps 25,181 and second flaps 26,182 of the first and second end walls 22,23 is located only at the folds 166,167,191,192.

[0145] In this embodiment, the adhesive 170 is a cold seal adhesive. The cold seal adhesive may be, for example, but not limited to, an adhesive derived from natural rubber, latex, resin, PVA, Loctite Liofol CS. The cold seal adhesive may be selected to meet the desired properties. The cold seal adhesive may be extrudable, water-based, or solvent based with peelable, resealable, or permanent sealability. Cold seal adhesives are generally easy to process in high speed presses, have a long shelf life on a reel of sheet material, are resealable after being applied to the sheet material, and are approved for direct food contact. Cold seal adhesives are applied to both adhesive surfaces and require only contact and / or pressure to bond to form a seal. That is, cold seal adhesives do not require heat to activate the adhesive.

[0146] Referring to FIG. 21 , areas of adhesive are disposed on the inner surfaces of the first flaps 25, 181 of the first and second end walls 22, 23, the outer flap 95 of the fourth side wall 34 and the third flaps 27, 183 of the first and second end walls 22, 23.

[0147] In this embodiment, the adhesive 170 is a heat seal adhesive.

[0148] In some embodiments, the aerosol delivery system component or package for the article 10, 110 includes a container 11 and an inner pack 20, 60, 90, 120, 130, 160, 190 located within the container 11. The inner pack includes a sheet material 21 configured to form the inner pack. In some embodiments, the sheet material 21 includes at least 90% of a first material, and in some embodiments, at least 6 g / m 2 / Has water vapor permeability of less than 24 hours.

[0149] A high proportion of a single material helps make the material easily recyclable, and the low water vapor permeability prevents water vapor from passing through the sheet material, allowing the inner pack to maintain the freshness of its contents.

[0150] In some embodiments, the sheet material comprises at least 92.5% of the first material. In other embodiments, the sheet material comprises at least 95% of the first material. In yet other embodiments, the sheet material comprises at least 98.5% of the first material. In some embodiments, the percentage of the first material is calculated based on the weight of the first material and the sheet material.

[0151] Preferably, the water vapor permeability of the first material is 5 g / m 2 / 24 hours, more preferably 3g / m2 / 24 hours, even more preferably 1g / m 2 / 24 hours. The lower the water vapor permeability of the first material, the longer the items or articles within the inner pack will remain fresh.

[0152] Preferably the sheet material is recyclable. Preferably the first material is compostable. Preferably the first material is a non-plastic material. The first material is, for example but not limited to, paper.

[0153] In this embodiment and those described above with respect to Figures 1-23, the adhesive may be selected from solvent-based adhesives, polyurethane-based adhesives, cyanoacrylate-based adhesives, natural rubber-based adhesives, latex-based adhesives, resin-based adhesives, cellulose-based adhesives, polypropylene ("PP")-based adhesives, polyethylene ("PE")-based adhesives, polyethylene terephthalate ("PET")-based adhesives, and polyvinyl alcohol ("PVA")-based adhesives. Each of these adhesives may be either a "permanent" or a "resealable" adhesive.

[0154] In embodiments in which the first material is paper, an adhesive suitable for paper is preferably used. Suitable adhesives are preferably selected from at least one (or a combination of one or more) of natural rubber adhesives, latex adhesives, resin adhesives, cellulose adhesives, polypropylene ("PP") adhesives, polyethylene ("PE") adhesives, polyethylene terephthalate ("PET") adhesives, and polyvinyl alcohol ("PVA") adhesives. These adhesives are particularly advantageous when applied to paper.

[0155] In particular natural rubber, latex, resin or cellulosic based adhesives have significantly lower emissions than synthetic adhesives and therefore may be applied to paper inner packs, for example made from recycled paper materials, to provide an inner pack with minimal emissions.

[0156] The permanent or resealable adhesive in relation to any of the above-mentioned embodiments may be based on any of the adhesives mentioned above depending on the adhesive composition and application. PVA has been found to be advantageous as a permanent adhesive when the first material is paper due to its interaction with the moisture content of the paper.

[0157] In some embodiments the inner pack may further comprise a second material. The second material may be metallic. The first and second materials may be arranged in layers to form the sheet material of the inner pack. In some embodiments the first and second materials are laminated. Preferably the second material forming the second layer is applied as a coating to the first material forming the first layer. The metallic material may protect the paper material from tearing.

[0158] In some embodiments, the container may comprise at least 90% of the first material. Additionally, the low water vapor permeability of the first material allows the container to form the outer layer of the package, thereby eliminating the need for a plastic outer wrapper since water vapor cannot pass through the inner pack and / or container due to the first material and inner pack being sealed.

[0159] The packaging for the aerosol delivery system component or article comprises at least 90% of the first material and has a mass of 6 g / m 2 / The invention can be provided by providing a sheet material having a water vapor permeability of less than 24 hours, assembling the sheet materials to form an inner pack, and placing the inner pack in a container. In some embodiments, these characterizing claims may be provided by using a first material that is paper.
