Abstract
Description
[Technical field]
[0001] The present invention relates to the refining of fibrous material, and in particular to a method of manufacturing a refining segment and to a refining segment for refining fibrous material. [Background technology]
[0002] Refiners are used for refining fibrous materials, such as lignocellulose-containing wood materials or other fibrous materials, suitable for use in the manufacture of pulp, paper or paperboard. Refiners typically comprise a mutually opposed stator and a rotor, the rotor rotating about its central axis and thereby relative to the stator. The stator and the rotor comprise a refining surface, which is provided with refining bars and refining grooves between them. The refining bars are intended to defibrate and refine the material to be refined. The refining grooves are intended to transport the material to be refined forward along the refining surface. The refining surface of the stator and the rotor may be formed by a number of refining segments fastened to the body of the respective stator / rotor. The total refining surface of the respective stator / rotor is then formed by the refining surfaces of a number of refining segments fastened adjacent to one another in the respective stator / rotor.
[0003] A typical method for manufacturing refining segments is casting, where molten metal such as iron or steel is poured into a casting mold shaped to provide a design for the refining surface on top of the body of the refining segment. The refining segment body and its top refining surface form a uniform, combined cast segment. After the metal hardens, the cast refining segment is removed from the casting mold and the refining segment is ready for use. Alternatively, the refining bars and refining grooves may be further machined to obtain the intended finished design of the refining surface.
[0004] A problem with the production of refining segments by casting is that due to the limited construction accuracy of the casting mould in casting, it is practically impossible to provide very dense refining surface configurations, i.e. refining surface configurations in which the width of the refining bars and the refining grooves is in the range of only 1 mm or a few mm. Other problems with cast refining segments of this kind are the incomplete filling of the refining bars and the high surface roughness of the refining bars, which cannot be perfected or smoothed after casting.
[0005] According to a prior art method for manufacturing refining segments, the bars made from metal strips and providing the refining bars of the refining segment are set on top of a back plate at a distance from each other and the refining bars are welded to the back plate. This method makes it possible to avoid machining of the refining bars and the refining grooves after casting and also allows very dense refining surface configurations. However, a problem with the manufacture of dense refining surface configurations by this method is the amount of welding work, which can amount to tens of kilometers, for example, to provide the totality of the entire refining surface of the refining element. Summary of the Invention
[0006] Therefore, there is a need to provide an alternative solution for manufacturing refining segments, especially for manufacturing refining segments having a very dense refining surface configuration.
[0007] It is an object of the present invention to provide a novel method for producing a refining segment and a novel refining segment for refining fibrous material.
[0008] The invention is characterized by the features of the independent claims.
[0009] The invention is based on arranging at least one set of profiled wires adjacent to each other and substantially immovable relative to each other; a width of the bottom of the profiled wires differing from a width of the top of the profiled wires to form at least one refining bar element; and fastening the at least one refining bar element to a back plate by applying at least one solidified substance between the at least one refining bar element and a back plate, the back plate forming the main body of the refining segment.
[0010] The disclosed method provides an efficient method, especially in terms of manufacturing costs and time, for producing refining segments having a particularly dense refining surface configuration.
[0011] Some embodiments of the invention are disclosed in the dependent claims. [Brief description of the drawings]

[0014] For clarity, the figures show simplified versions of some embodiments of the invention, and like reference numerals refer to like elements in the figures. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
[0015] Figure 1 is a schematic side view in cross section of refiner 1. Refiner 1 may be used, for example, for refining lignocellulose-containing wood-based or plant-based or recycled fibrous materials. The fibrous material refined in refiner 1 has the form of a pulp suspension, i.e. a mixture of water, fibrous material and possibly additives. The fiber consistency of the refined fibrous material may vary depending on the production requirements. Refiner 1 shown in Figure 1 is a disc refiner, but conical, conical disc and cylindrical refiners may be used as in the example here.
[0016] The refiner 1 of FIG. 1 comprises a frame 2 and a stator 3 which is stationary and supported on the frame 2. The stator 3 comprises two or more stator-side refining segments 4, each of which comprises refining bars and refining grooves therebetween. The refining bars and the refining grooves of each stator-side refining segment 4 form a refining surface 5 of each refining segment 4, whereby each refining surface 5 of each stator-side refining segment 4 provides (constitutes) a part of the refining surface of the stator 3. The totality of the refining surface of the stator 3 is formed by the refining surfaces 5 of the required number of stator-side refining segments 4 fastened adjacent to one another in the stator 3, so that the totality of the refining surface 5 extends around the entire circumference of the stator 3. For the sake of clarity, both the refining surface of each single stator-side refining segment 4 and the totality of the refining surface of the stator 3 are denoted herein by the same reference numeral 5.
[0017] The refiner 1 further comprises a rotor 6 of the refiner 1. The rotor 6 comprises a rotor frame 7. The rotor frame 7 is connected to a rotatable shaft 10 that is used to rotate the rotor 6 about its central axis. The rotor 6 further comprises two or more rotor-side refining segments 8 supported on the rotor frame 7, each rotor-side refining segment 8 comprising refining bars and refining grooves therebetween. The refining bars and the refining grooves of each rotor-side refining segment 8 form a refining surface 9 of each refining segment 8, which thereby provides (constitutes) a part of the refining surface of the rotor 6. The total refining surface of the rotor 6 is formed by the refining surfaces 9 of the required number of rotor-side refining segments 8 fastened adjacent to one another in the rotor 6, such that the total refining surface 9 extends around the entire circumference of the rotor 6. For the sake of clarity, in this specification, the refining surface of each single rotor-side refining segment 8 and the aggregate of the refining surface of the rotor 6 are designated by the same reference numeral 9 .
[0018] The fibrous material to be refined is fed to the refiner 1 via a feed channel 12, as indicated by arrow F, into a refining gap 11 remaining between the mutually opposing stator 2 and rotor 6. The refined material is removed from the refiner 1 via a discharge channel 13, as indicated generally by arrow D. The fibrous material to be refined is fed to the refiner 1 in the form of a pulp suspension, which is a mixture comprising at least water and virgin and / or recycled fibrous material.
[0019] Figure 2 is a schematic front view of refining segments 4,8 applicable to form part of the refining surface 5,9 of the stator 3 or rotor 6 of a disc refiner 1, whereby the totality of the refining surfaces 5,9 of the stator 3 and rotor 6 is provided by arranging the refining segments 4,8 of Figure 2 adjacent to one another on the circumference of the stator 3 or rotor 6 as many times as required. The solution described in the following description is illustrated in particular for disc-shaped refining segments 4,8 applicable for use in disc refiners 1 and also in conical disc refiners, but the solution may also be applied to conical and cylindrical refining segments used in conical, conical disc and cylindrical refiners, respectively.
[0020] The refining segment 4,8 comprises an inner edge 15 or a first edge 15 intended towards the inner circumference of the stator 3 or rotor 6. The refining segment 4,8 further comprises an outer edge 16 or a second edge 16 opposite the inner edge 15 in the longitudinal direction of the refining segment 4,8, the outer edge 16 intended towards the outer circumference of the stator 3 or rotor 6. The refining segment 4,8 further comprises a first side edge 17, which runs from the inner edge 15 of the refining segment 4,8 to the outer edge 16 of the refining segment 4,8. The refining segment 4,8 further comprises a second side edge 18 opposite the first side edge 17 in the circumferential direction of the refining segment 4,8. The second side edge 18 runs from the inner edge 15 of the refining segment 4,8 to the outer edge 16 of the refining segment 4,8. The inner edge 15 and the outer edge 16, together with the first side edge 17 and the second side edge 18, contribute to defining the periphery 14 of the refining segments 4, 8. In conical refiners, typically the smaller radial end of the stator / rotor is considered to refer to the inner circumference of the stator / rotor and the larger radial end of the stator / rotor is considered to refer to the outer circumference of the stator / rotor.
[0021] The refining segment 4,8 in FIG. 2 comprises a refining segment back plate 19, i.e. the body 19 of the refining segment 4,8, which typically consists of a metal such as iron or steel. The front side of the refining segment 4,8, i.e. the side of the refining segment 4,8 facing the refining gap 11 of the refiner 1, is provided with refining bars 20 and refining grooves 21 between the refining bars 20. The refining bars 20 and the refining grooves 21 together provide the refining surface 5,9 of the refining segment 4,8. In FIG. 2, the refining bars 20 are shown diagrammatically as black lines and the refining grooves 21 are shown as white lines between the black lines. The refining bars 20 are intended to defibre and refine the material to be refined. The refining grooves 21 are intended to transport the material to be refined forward along the refining surface 5,9 between the refining bars 20. In general, the refining segments may have different patterns of variable refining bars and refining grooves to provide certain performance according to the actual production needs. In Figure 2, the refining surfaces 5,9 of the refining segments 4,8 are shown for exemplary illustration purposes only. Thus, the actual implementation of the refining surfaces 5,9 may vary.
[0022] The refining segments 4, 8 may further include one or more fastening holes (not shown) that extend through the back plate 19 and are intended to receive suitable fastening members, such as bolts, for fastening each refining segment 4, 8 to the frame 2 of the refiner 1 or the frame 7 of the rotor 6.
[0023] Figures 3A, 3B, 3C and 3D show a schematic representation of a method for manufacturing a refining segment 4,8 applicable for use in either the stator 3 or the rotor 6 of the refiner 1. Figure 3A shows a schematic representation of a cross-sectional end view of a set of profiled wires 22 intended for forming the refining bars 20 of the refining segment 4,8. Figure 3B shows a schematic representation of a bottom view of the set of profiled wires 22 of Figure 3A. Figure 3C shows a schematic representation of an intermediate stage of the manufacture of the refining segment 4,8, where the set of profiled wires 22 of Figure 3A is placed on the back plate 19 which forms the body of the refining segment 4,8. Figure 3D shows a schematic representation of the finished refining segment 4,8.
[0024] 3A and 3B, which diagrammatically show profiled wires 22 arranged adjacent to one another at a distance from one another such that there is a substantially free gap or space between adjacent profiled wires 22. The profiled wires 22 are intended to form the refining bars 20 of the finished refining segments 4, 8, i.e. the refining bars 20 of the refining segments 4, 8 are implemented with the profiled wires 22. The profiled wires 22 are made of metal, such as steel.
[0025] In the embodiment of Figures 3A to 3D, the width Wa of the bottom 22a of the profiled wire 22 is greater than the width Wb of the top 22b of the profiled wire 22, so that a completely upwardly open refining groove 21 is formed between adjacent profiled wires 22. In general, for example, profiled wires having a width Wa of the bottom different from the width Wb of the top of the profiled wire 22 may be applied to implement the refining bar 20, so as to form refining grooves 21 having different cross-sectional configurations, depending for example on the intended flow behavior of the fibrous material at the refining surfaces 5, 9 of the refining segments 4, 8. The bottom 22a of the profiled wire 22 provides (constitutes) the base section of the refining bar 20. The top 22b of the profiled wire 22 constitutes the refining section of the refining bar 20.
[0026] Furthermore, the profile processing wires 22 in Figures 3A and 3B are arranged substantially immovably relative to one another. This may be done, for example, by pre-fastening adjacent profile processing wires 22 to one another. In the embodiment of Figures 3A to 3D, the profile processing wires 22 are pre-fastened to one another by spot welds 23 between the bottoms 22a of adjacent profile processing wires 22, but other applications, for example mechanical or chemical, of pre-fastening adjacent profile processing wires 22 to one another may be applied as well.
[0027] A pair of adjacently arranged profiled wires 22 arranged at a distance from one another and substantially immovable relative to one another form a refining bar element 24 intended to form at least a portion of the refining surfaces 5,9 of the refining segments 4,8. In the embodiment of Figures 3A-3D, the refining bar element 24 comprises profiled wires 22 arranged in a substantially parallel linear configuration, but generally the profiled wires 22 of the refining bar element 24 may be arranged in a substantially parallel linear configuration or in a curved configuration, depending on the intended configuration of the refining surfaces 5,9 of the refining segments 4,8.
[0028] 3C, the refining bar elements 24 disclosed in FIGS. 3A and 3B are fastened to the back plate 19 of the refining segments 4, 8 by applying at least one solidified material 25 between the refining bar elements 24 and the back plate 19, the at least one layer of the at least one solidified material 25 intended to fasten the refining bar elements 24 to the back plate 19 is applied on top of the back plate 19, and then the refining bar elements 24 are placed on top of the at least one layer of material 25 applied on top of the back plate 19. When the at least one material 25 has solidified or hardened, the at least one material 25 fastens the refining bar elements 24, i.e. the profiled wires 22 forming the refining bars 20 in the refining bar elements 24, to the back plate 19 to form the semi-finished refining segments 4, 8. For clarity, in Figures 3A to 3D, and later in Figure 4, the size of the profiled wire 22 has been exaggerated relative to the size of the back plate 19 of the refining segments 4,8.
[0029] According to an embodiment, at least one layer of solidified material 25 is applied in solid form on top of the backplate 19. Heat is then applied to the at least one layer of solidified material 25, causing the originally solid form of the at least one layer of solidified material 25 to change to a molten form, and then the refining bar elements 24 are placed on top of the molten form of the solidified material 25. This causes the solidified material 25 to remain between the backplate 19 and the bottoms 22a of the profiling wires 22 and to infiltrate between the bottoms 22a of adjacent profiling wires 22 in the refining bar elements 24.
[0030] According to an embodiment, at least one layer of solidified material 25 is applied in solid form on top of the backplate 19 and the refining bar elements 24 are set on top of the still solidified material 25. Heat is then applied to the at least one layer of solidified material 25, causing the at least one layer of solidified material 25 to change to a molten form, such that the solidified material 25 remains between the backplate 19 and the bottoms 22a of the profiling wires 22 and further penetrates between the bottoms 22a of adjacent profiling wires 22 in the refining bar elements 24.
[0031] According to an embodiment, at least one layer of solidified material 25 is applied in molten form on top of the backplate 19. The refining bar elements 24 are then set on top of the solidified material 25 in molten form, so that the solidified material 25 remains between the backplate 19 and the bottoms 22a of the profiling wires 22 and also penetrates between the bottoms 22a of adjacent profiling wires 22 in the refining bar elements 24.
[0032] In any of the three embodiments described above in which the refining bar elements 24 are fastened to the top of the back plate 19, additional solidifying material 25 may be applied in molten form between the bottom portions 22a of the profile processing wires 22, if desired.
[0033] In this way, the at least one substance 25 is in molten form, i.e. in the form of a liquid suspension, during part of its use conditions, but solidifies or hardens over time. The solidification or hardening of the at least one substance 25 may be enhanced by cooling or heating, depending on the composition of the at least one substance 25. The at least one substance 25 may be used to form a complete joint between the profiled wire 22 and the refining segment backplate 19 and between adjacent profiled wires 22, since in the molten state the at least one substance 25 can find a path to all voids between the profiled wire 22 and the refining segment backplate 19 and between adjacent profiled wires 22. This means that the bond between the refining bar and the backplate is complete, i.e. a 100% complete joint exists between the refining bar and the backplate, resulting in the expected refining effect with sufficient uniformity and strength. In this way, the disclosed solution makes it possible to avoid the problem of incomplete fastening of the refining bars to the backplate of the refining segments present in prior art solutions, such as welding the refining bars to the backplate, which may result in an uneven refining effect or wear of the refining bars.
[0034] 3D shows a schematic representation of the finished refining segments 4, 8. There is at least one solidified substance 25 applied between the refining segment back plate 19 and the profiled wires 22 forming the refining bar elements 24, and there is also at least one solidified substance 25 applied between the bottoms 22a of the profiled wires 22 to fasten adjacent profiled wires 22 in the refining bar elements 24 together. Furthermore, the at least one substance 25 infiltrated between adjacent profiled wires 22 forms the bottom of the refining groove 21 together with the bottoms 22a of the adjacent profiled wires 22 after solidification or hardening. Preferably, the at least one substance 25 infiltrates between the bottoms 22a of the adjacent profiled wires 22 to such an extent that the at least one substance 25 remains substantially between the bottoms 22a of the adjacent profiled wires 22 and does not extend further into the area remaining between the tops of the adjacent profiled wires 22. The top of the profiled wire forms the refining section of the refining bar 20. The method shown in Figures 3A to 3D may therefore be used to manufacture refining segments 4, 8, such as the one generally shown in Figure 2. According to one embodiment, before forming the refining bar elements 24 shown in Figures 3A and 3B, the profiled wire 22 intended to provide the refining bar 20 may be cut to have a specific length based on the intended finished refining surface shape. In this way, losses of the profiled wire can be minimized. Alternatively, the refining bar elements (blade bar elements) 24 may be formed from the profiled wire 22 initially having substantially the same length, as shown diagrammatically in Figure 3B. Then, before fastening the refining bar elements 24 to the back plate 19 of the refining segments 4, 8, the refining bar elements 24 are cut to a predetermined shape according to the shape of the back plate 19 and the intended configuration of the finished refining surface 5, 9 therein.
[0035] According to an embodiment, the at least one solidified substance 25 comprises a metal, by which the profiled wire 22 is metallurgically (by metal bonding) bonded to each other and to the backplate 19. After the at least one substance 25 has solidified or hardened, the profiled wire 22 and the backplate 19 form a substantially homogenous structure, although some boundary lines between the solidified substance 25 and the material of the profiled wire 22 and / or the backplate 19 may be visible in the cross-section of the refining segment 4,8. After the at least one substance 25 has solidified or hardened, the at least one substance 25 further constitutes, in part, a wear-resistant surface at the refining segment 4,8.
[0036] According to an embodiment, the at least one solidified material 25 is a brazing material, i.e. a metal alloy containing, for example, iron, copper, nickel and / or silver. The composition of the brazing material is therefore different from the composition of the metallic material of the profiled wire 22 or the back plate 19. Taking into account the melting temperature of the brazing material, which is typically about 450° C., the melting temperature of the brazing material is substantially lower. This does not affect the properties of the profiled wire 22 or the back plate 19 of the refining segments 4, 8 manufactured from a material having a higher melting temperature. The melting temperature of the brazing material is still sufficiently high so that the fastening of the profiled wire 22 to the finished refining segments 4, 8 is not weakened by the temperatures present in the refiner during refining. In this way, the brazing material forms a type of solidified or hardened metallic material that can be used as a filler metal for joining the profiled wire 22 to the back plate 19.
[0037] According to an embodiment, the at least one solidifying substance 25 comprises a glue, which may be, for example, a plastic-based or resin-based glue.
[0038] FIG. 4 shows a schematic cross-sectional view of a part of another refining segment 4,8. The refining segment 4,8 of FIG. 4 and its manufacturing method are substantially the same as those disclosed in FIGS. 3A to 3D and the related description above. The difference is the support platform 26 on top of which the profiled wire 22 is pre-fastened, for example by spot welding 23. In the embodiment of FIG. 4, the refining bar element 24 is thus formed by the support platform 26 and the profiled wire 22 which is pre-fastened to the support platform 26. The support platform 26 can be, for example, a perforated plate or a wire mesh. The profiled wires 22 of the refining bar element 24 are fastened to each other and to the support platform 26 by at least one material 25. The refining bar element 24 is fastened to the back plate 19 by at least one material 25.
[0039] The disclosed solution is very useful for the production of refining segments with very dense refining surface configurations, i.e. refining bars and refining grooves with widths in the range of just under 1 mm or a few mm. By welding the refining bars one by one to the back plate, these very dense refining surface configurations are in fact impossible or at least uneconomical or very laborious to produce by casting. If the refining bars of the refining segments are implemented with profiled wire, the profiled wire with the desired cross section can be produced as a single piece of indefinite length, and the profiled wire is simply cut into wire pieces of appropriate length with the desired end profile. Furthermore, the implementation of the refining bars with profiled wires solves the problem of incomplete filling of the refining bars and high surface roughness of the refining bars in refining segments created by casting. The implementation of the refining bar on the profiled wire, in which the width of the bottom of the profiled wire is different from the width of the top of the profiled wire, for example as shown in the drawing, in which the width of the bottom of the profiled wire is greater than the width of the top of the profiled wire, has the effect that the bottom of the refining groove is also partially implemented on the profiled wire. This has the effect that the bottom of the refining groove has a substantially smooth surface structure, which provides a substantially constant flow behavior for the flow of the fibrous material in the refining groove. Furthermore, the effect of the bottom of the refining groove being partially implemented on the profiled wire is that the bottom of the refining groove is implemented with only one single seam with the bottom of the adjacent profiled wire, which is formed with the above-mentioned substance, for example the brazing wax, which has penetrated therebetween. Thereby, no other means of implementing the refining groove are necessary. At the same time, the number of seams in the implementation of the refining segment is minimized, which provides a robust structure of the refining surface segment.
[0040] The refining bar elements 24, including the profiled wires pre-fastened to each other and / or to the support platform 26, can be manufactured to precise dimensions, e.g., in a fixture, prior to fastening the refining bar elements 24 to the backplate 19 of the refining segments 4, 8. Fastening the refining bar elements 24 to the backplate 19 by at least one solidifying material 25 eliminates the need for laborious welding operations to fasten the refining bars 20 one by one to the backplate 19. Thus, the disclosed method provides an efficient way of manufacturing refining segments having particularly high density refining surface configurations, particularly in terms of manufacturing costs and time.
[0041] 5 to 8 show schematic end views of several profiled wires 22 that can be used to implement the refining bars in the refining segment. FIG. 5 shows a profiled wire 22 having an inverted T-shaped cross section. FIG. 6 shows a profiled wire 22 having an inverted inclined T-shaped cross section. FIG. 7 also shows a profiled wire 22 having an L-shaped cross section. FIG. 8 shows a profiled wire 22 having an inclined L-shaped cross section. Furthermore, other cross-sectional shapes of the profiled wire are possible. The selection of a profiled wire 22 having a particular cross-sectional shape may be based, for example, on the fibrous material to be refined, the intended refining effect to be imparted to the fibrous material to be refined, and / or the intended flow behavior of the fibrous material at the refining surfaces 5, 9.
[0042] 5, an example of a specific dimension of the profiled wire 22 that can be used to provide a refining surface with a very dense refining surface configuration or characteristic is the profiled wire. The width Wa of the bottom 22a of the profiled wire 22 is about 3 mm, the width Wb of the top 22b of the profiled wire 22 is about 1.5 mm, the height Ha of the bottom 22a of the profiled wire 22 is about 2 mm, and the height Hb of the top 22b of the profiled wire 22 is about 8 mm. In general, the width Wb of the top 22b of the profiled wire 22 may be about 0.1 to 10 mm, and the width Wa of the bottom 22a of the profiled wire 22 may be 1 to 10 times the width Wb of the top 22b of the profiled wire 22. The distance or gap between adjacent profiled wires 22 in the refining bar element 24 may be, for example, 0 to 10 mm, preferably about 0.01 to 0.05 mm. Smaller gaps between the profiled wires require less solidified material, saving costs and providing stronger bonds. According to an embodiment, the height of the bottoms 22a of at least some of the profiled wires 22 may be further extended to such an extent that the bottoms 22a of the profiled wires 22 may form the back plate of the refining segment or at least a part thereof.
[0043] It is obvious to a person skilled in the art that with the advancement of technology, the concept of the present invention may be implemented in various ways. The present invention and its embodiments are not limited to the above examples, but may be modified in various ways within the scope of the claims.
