Abstract
Description
[Technical field]
[0001] The present invention relates in particular to an optically operated temperature sensor used to detect the surface temperature of a battery cell in an electric vehicle, with a view to preventing damage or premature failure of the battery cell due to excessively high or low temperatures of the battery cell associated with high electrical loads acting on the battery cell. [Background technology]
[0002] A sensor assembly using a plurality of optical fibers is known from WO 2019 / 166765 A1, the optical fibers comprising optical elements in the form of reflectors arranged at an axial distance from one another. The sensor assembly disclosed in the known document is intended to detect geometric deformations of the optical fiber. As known per se, such deformations arise on the one hand when the optical fiber is deformed or distorted by an external force. Such deformations may also arise in addition when a temperature change causes a change in the length of the optical fiber due to the thermal expansion coefficient of the optical fiber. A method for distinguishing between these types of deformations caused by different causes is not disclosed in the above-mentioned document. [Prior art documents] [Patent documents]
[0003] [Patent Document 1] International Publication No. 2019 / 166765A1 Summary of the Invention [Means for solving the problem]
[0004] The optically operated temperature sensor according to the invention, characterized by the features of claim 1, has the advantage that it can only detect deformations or distortions of the optical fiber caused by temperature changes in the optical fiber. In this way, it is particularly possible to eliminate erroneous measurements based on deformations caused by the influence of external forces on the optical fiber element or the optical fiber, respectively. Furthermore, the temperature sensor according to the invention is also useful for measuring the temperature of conductive or voltage-carrying components, if the temperature sensor exhibits high accuracy and short response times.
[0005] The use of metallic or conductive elements, especially in the case of voltage carrying components, is disadvantageous because of the increased risk of short circuits. This drawback is typical of electrical temperature sensors, for example resistance thermometers, and all temperature sensors connected to electrical conductors. The temperature sensor according to the invention, however, does not have this drawback.
[0006] The idea behind the invention is to place the optical fiber in functional connection with the protective element, so that external forces are absorbed by the protective element and, if they cause deformation, are not transmitted to the optical fiber. In other words, the essence of the invention is to keep external forces away from the optical fiber, so that changes in the geometry of the optical fiber between the optical elements are caused only by temperature changes, i.e. by the thermal expansion behavior of the optical fiber.
[0007] In light of the explanation given above, an optically operating temperature sensor having the features of claim 1 is provided in that the temperature sensor comprises at least one optical fiber guiding a light beam, as well as a plurality of optical elements spaced apart from one another in the axial direction of the at least one optical fiber and influencing the light beam that can be guided to the optical fiber, said optical elements and at least one optical fiber between them forming an assembly together with a rigid protective element that can be connected to the object to be measured, the protective element being electrically insulated on at least one side of the protective element facing the surface of the object to be measured, this side being connectable to the object to be measured.
[0008] Stiffness is intended to refer to a protection element that requires a force to achieve a particular bend radius that is at least 10 times greater than the force to achieve the same bend radius of an optical fiber, it being understood that even higher stiffness may be advantageous depending on the forces expected to be exerted in a particular application.
[0009] The change in the material of the reflector or optical fiber to change the optical properties is the measurement point which generates the signal. It is essential to the invention that this measurement point is protected by an electrically insulating protective element which protects it from undesirable environmental conditions.
[0010] Further advantageous embodiments of the temperature sensor according to the invention are set forth in the dependent claims.
[0011] Advantageously, the protective element is made of a material having a thermal conductivity of at least 0.1 Watt per Meter and Kelvin.
[0012] The protective element is advantageous because it has a thermal expansion coefficient similar to that of the optical fiber itself. Similar thermal expansion coefficients is intended to mean that the thermal expansion coefficients differ from each other by no more than 20%. If the difference was greater, the difference in thermal expansion coefficients would make it difficult to accurately determine the temperature, since the protective element would have a mechanical effect on the optical fiber with the change in temperature to be determined.
[0013] The protective element can be material-bonded to the fiber, which should then be considered as an assembly, thereby ensuring isolation from mechanical and chemical influences external to the assembly.
[0014] In a preferred constructional embodiment of the protective element, the latter is preferably configured in the shape of a tube, in other words, this means that due to its geometrical shape, it completely surrounds the cross section of at least one optical fiber, thus ensuring that the influence of external forces on the optical fiber that could cause deformations is prevented.
[0015] It is particularly preferred that the protective element is configured in the form of a straight tube.
[0016] There are various options regarding the material of the protective element. The material may be, for example, ceramic, glass material, or plastic, such as polyetheretherketone (PEEK) or polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), synthetic resin, epoxy resin (EP). All the aforementioned materials usually have electrically insulating properties, so that the side of the protective element facing the measurement object does not require any additional coating or the like to electrically insulate the protective element. It should be understood that, in addition to a suitable material, the protective element must also have a suitable geometry or material thickness to prevent deformation of the protective element on the one hand, and to ensure, on the other hand, a heat transfer from the measurement object to the optical fiber as good as possible or without hindrance.
[0017] The temperature range of use is preferably between -35°C and 700°C. Peak temperatures of 700°C occur, for example, during the evaluation of thermal runaway or heat propagation. In this case, the protective element will be made of a heat-resistant material. In a further application for battery testing, the temperature range is between -35°C and 200°C.
[0018] Furthermore, it is particularly preferred to connect the at least one optical fiber and the protection element directly to one another, which can be done, for example, by using glass or glass solder (initially molten) as material for the protection element.
[0019] Alternatively, the at least one optical fiber and the protective element may be bonded to each other using a thermally conductive adhesive, which improves heat transfer between the protective element and the at least one optical fiber.
[0020] In particular, if a glass material is used for the protective element, the chemical composition of the glass material must be identical to that of the at least one optical fiber. In this way, it will be easier to match the assembly with regard to keeping the thermal expansion coefficients of the optical fiber and the glass material or the protective element, respectively, as similar as possible. Furthermore, the material of the protective element may also be useful for forming a material bond with the measurement object without the need for additional auxiliary agents, for example when using glass solder for the protective element. This material bond, which improves the thermal conductivity, can also be realized by using a thermally conductive adhesive.
[0021] Furthermore, there are also different options with regard to the technology on which the temperature detection is based. In particular, the temperature sensor according to the invention has the advantage that the temperature can be measured based on different technologies depending on the application, in particular without the need for specific adaptations to the protective element. Thus, in a first embodiment, it is provided that the temperature sensor is configured to enable temperature detection based on the FSI (Fiber Segment Interferometry) technology. Such a technology is described in WO 2019 / 166765 A1, already mentioned at the beginning.
[0022] Alternatively, the temperature sensor may also be configured to enable temperature sensing based on FBG (Fiber Bragg Gratings) technology, as known per se.
[0023] As already explained above, the temperature sensor according to the invention is used in particular for sensing the surface temperature of a battery cell, in particular a battery cell of an electric vehicle.
[0024] The present invention also ultimately encompasses an electric vehicle battery cell assembly comprising a plurality of battery cells and at least one, and preferably a plurality of, temperature sensors constructed in accordance with the present invention, at least one temperature sensor being thermally conductively connected to a surface of the battery cells.
[0025] Further advantages, features and details of the present invention will become apparent from the following description of preferred embodiments of the invention and the drawings.
[0026] In the following, the invention will be explained in more detail by way of example and with reference to the drawings. [Brief description of the drawings]
[0027] [Figure 1] 1 is a simplified diagram of an assembly of multiple battery cells for an electric vehicle with an optically operated temperature sensor disposed or attached to the battery cells. [Diagram 2] FIG. 2 is a schematic diagram of an optically operated temperature sensor according to FIG. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
[0028] Throughout the drawings, identical elements or elements performing the same function are designated with the same reference numbers.
[0029] FIG. 1 presents a highly simplified diagram of a battery cell assembly 100, which is used in particular as a component of an electric vehicle for powering the electric vehicle. The battery cell assembly 100 comprises a number of battery cells 101, typically shaped like flat (pouch-shaped), cubic (prismatic) or round (cylindrical) lithium-ion battery cells, electrically connected to each other in series or in parallel (not shown). For simplicity, the diagram in FIG. 1 shows only two battery cells 101. In the operation of such a battery cell assembly 100, it is essential that the individual battery cells 101 operate within a certain temperature range to ensure, on the one hand, the full operational performance of the battery cells and, on the other hand, to prevent damage or premature failure due to excessively high or low temperatures. For this purpose, it is known per se in the prior art to maintain the battery cell assembly 100 within a desired temperature range using heating or cooling devices (thermal management systems).
[0030] In order to detect the temperature of the battery cells 101 relative to a desired temperature, at least one of the battery cells 101, or as shown in this example, both battery cells 101, is equipped with a sensor device 1 for detecting the surface temperature of the battery cells 101. The sensor device 1 detects the temperature T of the at least one battery cell 101 constituting the measurement object and transfers the detected data to a control device 2, for example, which at least indirectly controls the driving force of the electric vehicle or otherwise activates the heating or cooling device mentioned above in order to keep the temperature T of the battery cells 101 within a desired temperature range. Car manufacturers rely on a small number of battery cells equipped with measurement points for continuous use. In development use, it is important to detect from a large number of measurement points for designing, simulating and testing prototypes, which means that conventional temperature measurement techniques are reaching their limits due to conductive cables. Fiber optic measurement techniques are viewed critically due to the possible effects of mechanical forces that can distort the measurement results. This is the problem that the present invention aims to solve by providing a fiber optic measurement technique suitable for measuring the temperature of current-carrying or voltage-carrying components, which preferably includes a number of measurement points per optical fiber and a sensing unit for multiple optical fibers. The accuracy of the temperature values to be achieved is achieved by the assembly with protective elements as described herein.
[0031] By way of example, the sensor device 1 comprises a number of temperature sensors 10 designed according to the invention, and in the illustrated example, one battery cell 101 comprises two temperature sensors 10 arranged on the surface of the battery cell, whereas the other battery cell 101 has (only) one temperature sensor 10 arranged on the battery cell. It is understood that it is also within the scope of the invention to arrange more than two temperature sensors 10 on the battery cell 101. Regarding the arrangement of the temperature sensor 10, it is essential or desirable that the mounting location AO is selected so that it is sensed at the point where a temperature T characteristic for the battery cell 101 occurs, for example a maximum, minimum or average temperature T of the battery cell. This allows conclusions to be made generally about the current density at the measurement point of the battery cell or about the cooling.
[0032] The optically operated temperature sensor 10 is of identical construction and comprises three optical fibers 11 to 13, each in the form of a waveguide, illustratively combined or bundled by a common optical fiber strand 15. With reference to the illustration in Fig. 1, the temperature sensor 10 is coupled to a device 17, merely diagrammatically represented, for generating light, in particular laser light, which is configured to couple a light beam to the optical fibers 11 to 13. Furthermore, each of the individual optical fibers 11 to 13 can optionally be provided with a protective coating, not shown.
[0033] The portion of the optical fiber strand 15, which corresponds to the mounting location AO of the respective temperature sensor 10 on the battery cell 101, further comprises at least two optical elements 21, 22 arranged at an axial distance a from each other. The optical elements 21, 22 are configured, for example, in the form of a reflector or an optical grating, such that a change in the distance a is reflected in a change in the optical properties of the light coupled into the optical fiber strands 11 to 13, which optical properties are detectable by means of an evaluation device 25.
[0034] The temperature sensor 10 uses a measurement principle that is in particular based on FSI technology or alternatively on FBG technology. With regard to FSI technology, reference is made by way of example to WO 2019 / 166765 A1 which describes the physical principles and is in this respect incorporated by reference into this application.
[0035] According to the invention, in order to detect the change in distance a caused only by the temperature change of the battery cell 101 and not by external forces that cause deformation of the temperature sensor 10 at the mounting location AO, it is provided that the temperature sensor 10 is surrounded by a rigid protective element 30 at the mounting location AO. In this regard, the optical fibers 11 to 13 together with the optical elements 21, 22 and the protective element 30 form an assembly 31 that is at least thermally connected to the surface of the battery cell 101.
[0036] The protective element 30 is illustratively tubular or tube-like in shape and is made of, for example, ceramic, glass material such as glass solder, or plastic such as polyetheretherketone (PEEK), polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), synthetic resin, epoxy resin (EP), etc.
[0037] To prevent coupling of electrical voltages or currents to the temperature sensor 10 or the battery cell 101, the material of the protective element 30 exhibits electrical insulating or low conductivity properties, such as the exemplary materials already mentioned above. Alternatively or additionally, the protective element 30 may be provided with an electrically insulating coating (not shown), at least on the surface in contact with the battery cell 101.
[0038] Depending on the material used, it is also possible to achieve rigidity of the protection element 30 by appropriate dimensioning of the wall thickness etc. of the protection element 30 .
[0039] The stiffness of the protective element can be adapted depending on the expected external forces. The dimensioning of the wall thickness can be selected, for example, depending on the given material of the protective element 30.
[0040] The protective element 30 preferably exhibits good thermal conductivity so that the current temperature T of the battery cell 101 is rapidly transferred to the protective element 30 and the optical fibers 11 to 13. To this end, it is provided that the material of the protective element 30 is made of a material having a thermal conductivity of at least 0.1 Watt per meter per Kelvin (W / (m·K)).
[0041] The protective element 30 is preferably configured linearly, but may also be curved, for example. Furthermore, the optical fiber strand 15 is disposed in direct radial contact with the protective element 30, as shown in the example. Such direct contact or such direct contact may be provided by a joining process, such as, for example, press-fitting or shrink-fitting. Alternatively, it may be provided that the optical fiber strand 15 is joined to the protective element 30 by a thermally conductive adhesive or a similar intermediate.
[0042] However, it is not necessary to arrange the protective element in direct intimate contact with the optical fibers 11 to 13. It has been shown that an air gap between the optical fibers 11 to 13 and the protective element 30 also allows for an accurate measurement of the temperature of the battery cell. In the case of an air gap, the protective element is separated from the optical elements 21, 22 by an air gap and is connected on both sides to the optical fibers 11 to 13 in the areas where the optical elements 21, 22 are not located (not shown). The air gap may be filled with a gas. Conversely, an evacuated gap is of no use.
[0043] Furthermore, it is beneficial to ensure good heat transfer from the surface of the battery cell 101 to the protective element 30. In the illustrated example, a thermally conductive adhesive 32 is provided for this purpose, which not only ensures good heat transfer but also ensures, in a known manner, that the protective element 30 is firmly attached to the surface of the battery cell 101.
[0044] If the protective element 30 is made of a glass material, it is preferable that the chemical composition of the glass material is identical to the chemical composition of the material of the optical fibers 11 to 13 or of the optical fiber strand 15. Furthermore, in this case, the material used for the protective element 30 can also be used to realize the connection to the battery cell 101, especially if glass solders are used.
[0045] The temperature sensor 10 described so far can be modified or amended in various ways without departing from the spirit of the invention. Thus, for example, the cross section of the protective element 30 may be rectangular rather than tubular, with the proviso that for the optical fibers 11 to 13, this cross section has grooves for receiving the optical fibers 11 to 13 on the side facing away from the battery cell 101, in which the optical fibers 11 to 13 are embedded and fixed. In this case, the flat side of the cross section of the protective element 30 facing the battery cell 101 further provides a particularly good heat transfer or a large contact area.
