Description

[Technical field]

[0001] [CROSS REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS] This patent application claims priority to International Patent Application PCT / EP2020 / 058208, filed March 24, 2020. The disclosures of the aforementioned patent applications are incorporated herein by reference in their entireties.

[0002] TECHNICAL FIELD Embodiments of the present application relate generally to the field of image processing, and more specifically, to video coding. [Background technology]

[0003] Video coding (video encoding and decoding) is used in a wide range of digital video applications, such as broadcast digital TV, video transmission over the Internet and mobile networks, or real-time conversation applications such as video chat, video conferencing, DVDs and Blu-ray Discs, video content acquisition and editing systems, and camcorders in security applications.

[0004] Even to render a relatively short video, the amount of video data required can be substantial, which can result in difficulties when the data is to be streamed or otherwise communicated over a communication network with limited bandwidth capacity. Thus, video data is typically compressed before being communicated over modern telecommunication networks. The size of the video can also be an issue when the video is stored on a storage device, since memory resources may be limited. Video compression devices often use software and / or hardware at the source to reduce the amount of data required to represent a digital video image by coding the video data before transmission or storage. The compressed data is then received at the destination by a video decompression device that decodes the video data. In view of limited network resources and the ever-increasing demand for high video quality, improved compression and decompression techniques are desired that improve compression ratios with little or no sacrifice in image quality. Summary of the Invention

[0005] Embodiments of the present application provide apparatus and methods for encoding and decoding according to the independent claims.

[0006] These and other objects are achieved by the subject matter of the independent claims. Further embodiments emerge from the dependent claims, the description and the figures.

[0007] According to a first aspect, the present invention relates to a method for decoding a video or image bitstream implemented by a decoding device, the bitstream including a current sequence parameter set (SPS) including syntax elements to be applied to the video sequence, the method comprising: obtaining (a value of) a first syntax element (e.g., sps_max_sublayers_minus1) used to determine a maximum number of temporal sublayers allowed to be present in each coded layered video sequence (CLVS) referencing the current SPS, where the value of the first syntax element ranges from 0 to a first value, the first value being the value of a second syntax element (e.g., vps_max_sublayers_minus1) used to determine a maximum number of temporal sublayers allowed to be present in a layer in each coded video sequence (CVS) referencing a video parameter set (VPS) when a second syntax element is referenced by the SPS; and decoding the bitstream based on the value of the first syntax element.

[0008] The condition under which the second syntax element is referenced by the SPS (on which the scope of the first syntax element, i.e., the first value, depends) may include the presence of the second syntax element in the bitstream. In other words, not referencing the second syntax element by the SPS may include "not being present in the bitstream."

[0009] In particular, it may be held that the value of a first syntax element is in the range from 0 to the first value only if the second syntax element is referenced by the SPS.

[0010] According to an embodiment, the first value is a pre-set value (eg, 6) specifically only if the second syntax element is not referenced by the SPS.

[0011] According to an embodiment, the second syntax element is in the VPS.

[0012] The VPS is an optional parameter set. For example, in the case of a single-layer bitstream, the VPS may not be present or may not be referenced in the bitstream (so that the second syntax element may not be referenced by the SPS). Therefore, using the second syntax element to determine the scope of the first syntax element for a single-layer bitstream is guaranteed, at least if the second syntax element is referenced by the SPS. In particular, the maximum number of temporal sublayers allowed to be present in each CLVS that references the current SPS is well defined, regardless of whether the VPS is present in the bitstream.

[0013] According to an embodiment, decoding the bitstream may include obtaining decoding capability information based on a value of the first syntax element, and decoding the bitstream based on the decoding capability information (e.g., dpb_parameters).

[0014] According to an embodiment, the decoding capability information includes a DPB syntax element, and decoding the bitstream based on the decoding capability information includes constructing a DPB based on a value of the DPB syntax element, and the method may further include decoding the bitstream using the DPB to reconstruct the video sequence.

[0015] According to an embodiment, the decoding capability information includes a DPB syntax element, and decoding the bitstream based on the decoding capability information may include decoding the bitstream based on determining that the DPB used meets requirements specified by the value of the DPB syntax element to reconstruct the video sequence.

[0016] According to an embodiment, the first syntax element is in the SPS.

[0017] According to a second aspect, the present invention relates to a method for encoding a video or image bitstream implemented by an encoding device, the bitstream including a current sequence parameter set (SPS) including syntax elements to be applied to the video sequence, the method comprising: determining whether a second syntax element is referenced by the SPS, the second syntax element (e.g., vps_max_sublayers_minus1) being used to determine a maximum number of temporal sublayers allowed to be present in a layer in each coded video sequence (CVS) that references the video parameter set (VPS); determining a value of a first syntax element used to determine the maximum number of temporal sublayers allowed to be present in each coded layered video sequence (CLVS) that references the current SPS based on a range of the first syntax element, the range being from 0 to a first value, the first value being a value of the second syntax element if it is determined that the second syntax element is referenced by the SPS; and encoding the value of the first syntax element into the bitstream.

[0018] In particular, it may hold that the value of a first syntax element is in the range from 0 to the first value only if the second syntax element is determined to be referenced by an SPS.

[0019] According to an embodiment, encoding the bitstream may include encoding decoding capability information into the bitstream based on a value of the first syntax element.

[0020] According to an embodiment, the first value is a pre-set value (eg, 6) specifically only if the second syntax element is not referenced by the SPS.

[0021] According to an embodiment, the second syntax element is in the VPS.

[0022] According to an embodiment, the first syntax element is in the SPS.

[0023] According to a third aspect, the present invention relates to an apparatus for decoding a (coded) video bitstream, comprising: an obtaining unit configured to obtain (a value of) a first syntax element used to determine a maximum number of temporal sub-layers allowed to be present in each coded layered video sequence (CLVS) referencing a current SPS, the value of the first syntax element being in a range from 0 to a first value, the first value being a value of a second syntax element used to determine the maximum number of temporal sub-layers allowed to be present in a layer in each coded video sequence (CVS) referencing a video parameter set (VPS) when the second syntax element is referenced by the SPS; and a decoding unit configured to decode the bitstream based on the value of the first syntax element.

[0024] According to a fourth aspect, the present invention relates to an apparatus for encoding a video bitstream, comprising: a determining unit configured to determine whether a second syntax element is referenced by an SPS, the second syntax element (e.g., vps_max_sublayers_minus1) being used to determine a maximum number of temporal sublayers allowed to be present in a layer in each coded video sequence (CVS) referencing the video parameter set (VPS); determining a value of a first syntax element used to determine the maximum number of temporal sublayers allowed to be present in each coded layered video sequence (CLVS) referencing the current SPS based on a range of the first syntax element, the range being from 0 to a first value, the first value being a value of the second syntax element if it is determined that the second syntax element is referenced by the SPS; and an encoding unit configured to encode the value of the first syntax element into the bitstream.

[0025] The method according to the first aspect of the invention can be carried out by an apparatus according to the third aspect of the invention. Further features and embodiments of the apparatus according to the third aspect of the invention correspond to the features and embodiments of the method according to the first aspect of the invention.

[0026] The method according to the second aspect of the invention can be carried out by an apparatus according to the fourth aspect of the invention. Further features and embodiments of the apparatus according to the fourth aspect of the invention correspond to the features and embodiments of the method according to the second aspect of the invention.

[0027] The above methods may be implemented in a decoding device or an encoding device, respectively, and thus an encoder is provided that includes a processing circuit for performing the method for encoding a video bitstream according to any one of the above examples. Further provided is an encoder comprising one or more processors and a non-transitory computer readable storage medium coupled to the processors and storing programming for execution by the processors, the programming, when executed by the processors, configuring the encoder to perform the method for encoding a video bitstream according to any one of the above examples. [0028] Further provided is a computer program product including program code for performing a method according to any one of the above examples when executed on a computer or processor. Similarly, provided is a non-transitory computer readable medium carrying program code that, when executed by a computing device, causes the computing device to perform a method according to any one of the above examples.

[0029] According to a fifth aspect, the invention relates to a non-transitory storage medium comprising a video bitstream, the bitstream comprising a current sequence parameter set (SPS) comprising syntax elements applied to the video sequence, the bitstream further comprising a first syntax element used to determine a maximum number of temporal sub-layers allowed to be present in each coded layered video sequence (CLVS) referencing the current SPS, the value of the first syntax element being in the range of 0 to a first value, the first value being the value of a second syntax element used to determine the maximum number of temporal sub-layers allowed to be present in a layer in each coded video sequence (CVS) referencing a video parameter set (VPS) when the second syntax element is referenced by the SPS.

[0030] According to an embodiment, if the second syntax element is not referenced by the SPS, the first value is a preset value.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS

[0033] In the following description, reference is made to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this disclosure and which show by way of illustration specific aspects of embodiments of the invention or in which embodiments of the invention may be used. It is understood that the embodiments of the invention may be used in other ways and may include structural or logical changes not shown in the drawings. Therefore, the following detailed description is not to be taken in a limiting sense, and the scope of the present invention is defined by the appended claims.

[0034] For example, it is understood that disclosure related to a described method may also apply to a corresponding device or system configured to perform the method, and vice versa. For example, when one or more specific method steps are described, the corresponding device may include one or more units, e.g., functional units, for performing the described method steps (e.g., one unit performing one or more steps, or multiple units each performing one or more of the multiple steps), even when such one or more units are not explicitly described or shown in the figure. On the other hand, when, for example, a particular apparatus is described based on one or more units, e.g., functional units, the corresponding method may include one step for performing the function of one or more units (e.g., one step performing the function of one or more units, or multiple steps each performing one or more functions of the multiple units), even when such one or more steps are not explicitly described or shown in the figure. Furthermore, it should be noted that features of various exemplary embodiments and / or aspects described herein may be combined with each other, unless specifically stated otherwise.

[0035] Video coding typically refers to the processing of a series of images forming a video or a video sequence. Instead of the term "image", the terms "frame" or "image" may be used as synonyms in the field of video coding. Video coding (or coding in general) includes two parts: video encoding and video decoding. Video encoding is performed on the source side and typically involves processing (e.g., by compression) the original video image so as to reduce the amount of data required to represent the video image (for more efficient storage and / or transmission). Video decoding is performed on the destination side and typically involves the reverse processing compared to the encoder to reconstruct the video image. The embodiments referring to "coding" of a video image (or images in general) shall be understood to relate to "encoding" or "decoding" of the video image or the respective video sequence. The combination of the encoding and decoding parts is also referred to as a codec (coding and decoding).

[0036] In the case of lossless video coding, the original video image can be reconstructed, i.e. the reconstructed video image is of the same quality as the original video image (assuming there is no transmission or other data loss during storage or transmission). In the case of lossy video coding, further compression, e.g. by quantization, is performed to reduce the amount of data representing the video image, which cannot be completely reconstructed at the decoder, i.e. the quality of the reconstructed video image is reduced or degraded compared to the quality of the original video image.

[0037] Some video coding standards belong to the group of "lossy hybrid video codecs" (i.e., they combine spatial and temporal prediction in the sample domain with 2D transform coding to apply quantization in the transform domain). Each image of a video sequence is typically partitioned into a set of non-overlapping blocks, and coding is typically performed at the block level. In other words, at the encoder, the video is typically processed, i.e., encoded, at the block (video block) level, for example, by generating a predictive block using spatial (intra-picture) prediction and / or temporal (inter-picture) prediction, subtracting the predictive block from a current block (the block currently being / to be processed) to obtain a residual block, transforming the residual block and quantizing the residual block in the transform domain to reduce (compress) the amount of data to be transmitted, while at the decoder, in order to reconstruct the current block for representation, the reverse processing is applied to the encoded or compressed block compared to the encoder. Furthermore, the encoder repeats the decoder processing loop, resulting in both generating identical predictions (e.g., intra- and inter-predictions) and / or reconstructions for processing, i.e., coding, of subsequent blocks. In the following embodiment of a video coding system 10, a video encoder 20 and a video decoder 30 are described based on FIGS.

[0038] 1A is a schematic block diagram illustrating an example coding system 10, e.g., video coding system 10 (or coding system 10 for short), that may use techniques of the present application. A video encoder 20 (or encoder 20 for short) and a video decoder 30 (or decoder 30 for short) of video coding system 10 represent examples of devices that may be configured to perform techniques in accordance with various examples described herein. As shown in FIG. 1A, coding system 10 includes a source device 12 configured to provide encoded image data 21 to a destination device 14, e.g., for decoding the encoded image data 13.

[0039] The source device 12 comprises an encoder 20 and may additionally, i.e. optionally, comprise an image source 16, a preprocessing device (or preprocessing unit) 18, e.g., an image preprocessing device 18, and a communication interface or unit 22. The image source 16 may include or be any kind of imaging device, e.g., a camera that captures real-world images, and / or any kind of image generating device, e.g., a computer graphics processor that generates computer animated images, or any kind of other device that obtains and / or provides real-world images, computer-generated images (e.g., screen content, virtual reality (VR) images), and / or any combination thereof (e.g., augmented reality (AR) images). The image source may be any kind of memory or storage that stores any of the above-mentioned images.

[0040] To distinguish from the pre-processing device 18 and the processing performed by the pre-processing unit 18 , the image or image data 17 may also be referred to as raw image or raw image data 17 .

[0041] The pre-processing unit 18 is configured to receive the (raw) image data 17 and perform pre-processing on the image data 17 to obtain a pre-processed image 19 or pre-processed image data 19. The pre-processing performed by the pre-processing unit 18 may include, for example, trimming, color format conversion (e.g., from RGB to YCbCr), color correction, or noise removal.

[0042] It will be appreciated that the pre-processing unit 18 may be an optional component.

[0046] The communications interface 28 of the destination device 14 is configured to receive the encoded image data 21 (or any further processed version thereof), e.g. directly from the source device 12 or from any other source, e.g. a storage device, e.g. an encoded image data storage device, and to provide the encoded image data 21 to a decoder 30.

[0047] The communication interface 22 and the communication interface 28 may be configured to transmit or receive the encoded image data 21 or the encoded data 13 between the source device 12 and the destination device 14 via a direct communication link, e.g., a direct wired or wireless connection, or via any type of network, e.g., a wired or wireless network or any combination thereof, or any type of private and public network or any combination thereof.

[0048] The communications interface 22 may be configured, for example, to package the encoded image data 21 into an appropriate format, for example into packets, and / or to process the encoded image data using any type of transmission encoding or processing for transmission over a communications link or network.

[0049] Communications interface 28, forming a counterpart to communications interface 22, may be configured, for example, to receive transmitted data and process the transmitted data using any type of corresponding transmission decoding or processing and / or depackaging to obtain encoded image data 21.

[0050] Both communication interface 22 and communication interface 28 may be configured as unidirectional communication interfaces, as indicated by the arrow of communication channel 13 pointing from source device 12 to destination device 14 in FIG. 1A, or as bidirectional communication interfaces, e.g., configured to send and receive messages, e.g., set up connections, and confirm and exchange communications links and / or any other information related to data transmission, e.g., encoded image data transmission.

[0051] The decoder 30 is configured to receive the encoded image data 21 and provide decoded image data 31 or a decoded image 31 (further details are described below, e.g. with reference to Figure 3 or Figure 5).

[0052] The post-processor 32 of the destination device 14 is configured to post-process the decoded image data 31 (also called reconstructed image data), e.g. the decoded image 31, to obtain post-processed image data 33, e.g. the post-processed image 33. The post-processing performed by the post-processing unit 32 may include, e.g., color format conversion (e.g., from YCbCr to RGB), color correction, trimming, or resampling, or any other processing, for example, with the purpose of preparing the decoded image data 31 for, e.g., display by a display device 34.

[0053] A display device 34 of the destination device 14 is configured to receive the post-processed image data 33 in order to display the image, for example to a user or viewer. The display device 34 may be or include any type of display for presenting the reconstructed image, for example, an integrated or external display or monitor. The display may include, for example, a liquid crystal display (LCD), an organic light emitting diode (OLED) display, a plasma display, a projector, a micro LED display, a liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS), a digital light processor (DLP), or any type of other display.

[0054] 1A illustrates source device 12 and destination device 14 as separate devices, an embodiment of the devices may include both or both of their functionality, i.e., source device 12 or corresponding functionality and destination device 14 or corresponding functionality. In such an embodiment, source device 12 or corresponding functionality and destination device 14 or corresponding functionality may be implemented using the same hardware and / or software or by separate hardware and / or software or any combination thereof.

[0055] As will be apparent to those skilled in the art based on this description, the presence and (exact) division of functions of different units or functions within source device 12 and / or destination device 14, as shown in FIG. 1A, may vary depending on the actual device and application.

[0056] The encoder 20 (e.g., video encoder 20) or the decoder 30 (e.g., video decoder 30) or both the encoder 20 and the decoder 30 may be implemented via processing circuitry as shown in FIG. 1B, such as one or more microprocessors, digital signal processors (DSPs), application specific integrated circuits (ASICs), field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), discrete logic, hardware, dedicated to video coding, or any combination thereof. The encoder 20 may be implemented via processing circuitry 46 to implement various modules discussed in connection with the encoder 20 of FIG. 2 and / or any other encoder system or encoder subsystem described herein. The decoder 30 may be implemented via processing circuitry 46 to implement various modules discussed in connection with the decoder 30 of FIG. 3 and / or any other decoder system or subsystem described herein. The processing circuitry may be configured to perform various operations as discussed below. As shown in FIG. 5, if the technique is implemented partially in software, the device may store instructions for the software in a suitable non-transitory computer-readable storage medium and execute the instructions using one or more processors in hardware to perform the techniques of the present disclosure. Either video encoder 20 and video decoder 30 may be integrated as part of a combined encoder / decoder (codec) within a single device, for example, as shown in FIG. 1B.

[0057] The source device 12 and the destination device 14 may comprise any of a wide range of devices, including any type of handheld or stationary device, such as a notebook or laptop computer, a mobile phone, a smartphone, a tablet or tablet computer, a camera, a desktop computer, a set-top box, a television, a display device, a digital media player, a video game console, a video streaming device (such as a content service server or content delivery server), a broadcast receiver device, a broadcast transmitter device, and the like, and may use no operating system or any type of operating system.

[0058] In some cases, source device 12 and destination device 14 may be capable of wireless communication. Thus, source device 12 and destination device 14 may be wireless communication devices. In some cases, the video coding system 10 shown in FIG. 1A is merely an example, and the techniques of the present application may be applied to video coding settings (e.g., video encoding or video decoding) that do not necessarily include any data communication between the encoding device and the decoding device. In other examples, data may be retrieved from a local memory, streamed over a network, etc. A video encoding device may encode and store data in a memory, and / or a video decoding device may decode and retrieve data from a memory. In some examples, encoding and decoding are performed by devices that do not communicate with each other but simply encode data in a memory and / or retrieve data from a memory and decode it.

[0059] For ease of explanation, embodiments of the present invention are described herein by reference to, for example, reference software for High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) or Versatile Video Coding (VVC), the next generation video coding standards developed by the ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group (VCEG) and the ISO / IEC Motion and Image Experts Group (MPEG) Joint Collaboration Team on Video Coding (JCT-VC). Those skilled in the art will appreciate that embodiments of the present invention are not limited to HEVC or VVC.

[0060] [Encoder and encoding method] FIG. 2 shows a schematic block diagram of an exemplary video encoder 20 configured to perform the techniques of the present application. In the example of FIG. 2, the video encoder 20 includes an input 201 (or an input interface 201), a residual calculation unit 204, a transform processing unit 206, a quantization unit 208, an inverse quantization unit 210, an inverse transform processing unit 212, a reconstruction unit 214, a loop filter unit 220, a decoded picture buffer (DPB) 230, a mode selection unit 260, an entropy encoding unit 270, and an output 272 (or an output interface 272). The mode selection unit 260 may include an inter prediction unit 244, an intra prediction unit 254, and a partitioning unit 262. The inter prediction unit 244 may include a motion estimation unit and a motion compensation unit (not shown). The video encoder 20 shown in FIG. 2 may also be referred to as a hybrid video encoder, or a video encoder with a hybrid video codec.

[0061] The residual calculation unit 204, the transform processing unit 206, the quantization unit 208, and the mode selection unit 260 may be referred to as forming a forward signal path of the encoder 20, while the inverse quantization unit 210, the inverse transform processing unit 212, the reconstruction unit 214, the buffer 216, the loop filter 220, the decoded picture buffer (DPB) 230, the inter prediction unit 244, and the intra prediction unit 254 may be referred to as forming a backward signal path of the video encoder 20. The backward signal path of the video encoder 20 corresponds to the signal path of the decoder (see the video decoder 30 of FIG. 3). The inverse quantization unit 210, the inverse transform processing unit 212, the reconstruction unit 214, the loop filter 220, the decoded picture buffer (DPB) 230, the inter prediction unit 244, and the intra prediction unit 254 may also be referred to as forming a "built-in decoder" of the video encoder 20.

[0062] [Images and Image Segmentation (Images and Blocks)] The encoder 20 may be configured to receive, for example, via an input 201, an image 17 (or image data 17), for example an image of a sequence of images forming a video or a video sequence. The received image or image data may be a preprocessed image 19 (or preprocessed image data 19). For the sake of brevity, the following description refers to the image 17. The image 17 may also be referred to as a current image or an image to be coded (particularly in video coding, to distinguish the current image from other images, for example previously encoded and / or decoded images of the same video sequence, i.e. a video sequence that also includes the current image).

[0063] A (digital) image is or may be considered as a two-dimensional array or matrix of samples with intensity values. The samples in the array may also be referred to as pixels (short for picture element) or pels. The number of samples in the horizontal and vertical directions (or axes) of the array or image defines the size and / or resolution of the image. To represent color, typically three color components are utilized, i.e. an image may be represented by or contain three sample arrays. In an RBG format or color space, an image contains corresponding red, green, and blue sample arrays. However, in video coding, each pixel is typically represented in a luminance and chrominance format or color space, e.g. YCbCr, which includes a luminance component denoted Y (sometimes L is used instead) and two chrominance components denoted Cb and Cr. The luminance (or luma for short) component Y represents the brightness or intensity of the gray level (e.g. as in a grayscale image), and the two chrominance (or chroma for short) components Cb and Cr represent the chromaticity or color information components. Thus, an image in YCbCr format includes a luminance sample array of luminance sample values (Y) and two chrominance sample arrays of chrominance values (Cb and Cr). An image in RGB format may be converted or transformed into YCbCr format or vice versa, a process also known as color conversion or transformation. If the image is monochrome, the image may only include a luminance sample array. Thus, an image may be, for example, an array of luma samples in monochrome format, or an array of luma samples and two corresponding arrays of chroma samples in 4:2:0, 4:2:2, and 4:4:4 color formats.

[0064] An embodiment of the video encoder 20 may comprise an image partitioning unit (not shown in FIG. 2 ) configured to partition an image 17 into multiple (typically non-overlapping) image blocks 203. These blocks may also be referred to as root blocks, macroblocks (H.264 / AVC) or coding tree blocks (CTBs) or coding tree units (CTUs) (H.265 / HEVC and VVC). The image partitioning unit may be configured to partition each image into corresponding blocks using the same block size for all images of a video sequence and the corresponding grid that defines the block size, or to vary the block size among images or subsets or groups of images.

[0065] In a further embodiment, the video encoder may be configured to directly receive a block 203 of the image 17, e.g., one, some or all of the blocks forming the image 17. The image block 203 may also be referred to as a current image block or an image block to be coded.

[0066] Similar to the image 17, the image block 203 is again of smaller dimensions than the image 17, but is or can be considered as a two-dimensional array or matrix of samples with intensity values (sample values). In other words, the block 203 may comprise, for example, one sample array (e.g. a luma array for a monochrome image 17, or a luma or chroma array for a color image), or three sample arrays (e.g. a luma and two chroma arrays for a color image 17), or any other number and / or type of arrays depending on the color format applied. The number of samples in the horizontal and vertical directions (or axes) of the block 203 defines the size of the block 203. Thus, the block may be, for example, an M×N (M columns×N rows) array of samples, or an M×N array of transform coefficients.

[0067] The embodiment of video encoder 20 shown in FIG. 2 may be configured to encode image 17 block-by-block, eg, encoding and prediction is performed for each block 203.

[0068] The embodiment of video encoder 20 shown in FIG. 2 may be further configured to partition and / or encode an image by using slices (also referred to as video slices), where an image may be partitioned or encoded using one or more slices (typically non-overlapping), and each slice may include one or more blocks (e.g., CTUs).

[0069] The embodiment of video encoder 20 shown in FIG. 2 may be further configured to partition and / or encode an image by using tile groups (also referred to as video tile groups) and / or tiles (also referred to as video tiles), where an image may be partitioned or encoded using one or more tile groups (typically non-overlapping), where each tile group may include, for example, one or more blocks (e.g., CTUs) or one or more tiles, where each tile may be, for example, rectangular in shape and may include one or more blocks (e.g., CTUs), e.g., complete blocks or partial blocks.

[0070] [Residual calculation] The residual calculation unit 204 may be configured to calculate the residual block 205 (also referred to as residual 205) based on the image block 203 and the prediction block 265 (further details regarding the prediction block 265 are provided later), for example, by subtracting sample values of the prediction block 265 from sample values of the image block 203 on a sample-by-sample (pixel-by-pixel) basis to obtain the residual block 205 in the sample domain.

[0071] [conversion] The transform processing unit 206 may be configured to apply a transform, such as a discrete cosine transform (DCT) or a discrete sine transform (DST), to the sample values of the residual block 205 to obtain transform coefficients 207 in a transform domain. The transform coefficients 207 may also be referred to as transform residual coefficients and represent the residual block 205 in the transform domain.

[0072] The transform processing unit 206 may be configured to apply an integer approximation of a DCT / DST, such as the transform specified in H.265 / HEVC. Compared to an orthogonal DCT transform, such an integer approximation is typically scaled by a certain factor. To preserve the norm of the residual block processed by the forward transform and the inverse transform, an additional scaling factor is applied as part of the transform process. The scaling factor is typically selected based on certain constraints, such as a scaling factor that is a power of two with respect to shift operations, a bit depth of the transform coefficients, a trade-off between accuracy and implementation cost, etc. For example, a certain scaling factor may be specified for the inverse transform, e.g., by the inverse transform processing unit 212 (and a corresponding inverse transform, e.g., by the inverse transform processing unit 312 in the video decoder 30), and a corresponding scaling factor for the forward transform, e.g., by the transform processing unit 206 in the encoder 20, may be specified accordingly.

[0073] An embodiment of video encoder 20 (respectively transform processing unit 206) may be configured to encode or compress and then output transform parameters, e.g., one or more types of transform, e.g., directly or via entropy encoding unit 270, such that, for example, video decoder 30 may receive and use the transform parameters for decoding.

[0074] [Quantization] The quantization unit 208 may be configured to quantize the transform coefficients 207, for example by applying scalar quantization or vector quantization, to obtain quantized coefficients 209. The quantized coefficients 209 may also be referred to as quantized transform coefficients 209 or quantized residual coefficients 209.

[0075] The quantization process may reduce the bit depth associated with some or all of the transform coefficients 207. For example, an n-bit transform coefficient may be truncated to an m-bit transform coefficient during quantization, where n is greater than m. The degree of quantization may be changed by adjusting a quantization parameter (QP). For example, in the case of scalar quantization, different scaling may be applied to achieve finer or coarser quantization. A smaller quantization step size corresponds to a finer quantization, while a larger quantization step size corresponds to a coarser quantization. The applicable quantization step sizes may be indicated by a quantization parameter (QP). The quantization parameter may be, for example, an index into a predefined set of applicable quantization step sizes. For example, a small quantization parameter may correspond to fine quantization (small quantization step size) and a large quantization parameter may correspond to coarse quantization (large quantization step size), or vice versa. Quantization may include a division by a quantization step size, and corresponding and / or inverse dequantization, e.g., by the inverse quantization unit 210, may include a multiplication by the quantization step size. An embodiment according to some standards, e.g., HEVC, may be configured to use a quantization parameter to determine the quantization step size. In general, the quantization step size may be calculated based on the quantization parameter using a fixed-point approximation of an equation that includes a division. To restore the norm of the residual block, an additional scaling factor may be introduced in the quantization and dequantization, which may change due to the scaling used in the fixed-point approximation of the quantization step size and quantization parameter equations. In an exemplary implementation, the scaling of the inverse transform and dequantization may be combined. Alternatively, a customized quantization table may be used and signaled, e.g., in the bitstream, from the encoder to the decoder. Quantization is a lossy operation, and the loss increases with increasing quantization step size.

[0076] An embodiment of video encoder 20 (respective quantization unit 208) may be configured to encode and then output a quantization parameter (QP), e.g., directly or via entropy encoding unit 270, such that, for example, video decoder 30 may receive and apply the quantization parameter for decoding.

[0077] [Dequantization] Inverse quantization unit 210 is configured to apply the inverse quantization of quantization unit 208 to the quantized coefficients, e.g., by applying the inverse of the quantization scheme applied by quantization unit 208 based on or using the same quantization step size as quantization unit 208, to obtain dequantized coefficients 211. The dequantized coefficients 211 may also be referred to as dequantized residual coefficients 211 and correspond to the transform coefficients 207, although they are typically not identical to the transform coefficients due to losses due to quantization.

[0078] [Inverse Transformation] The inverse transform processing unit 212 is configured to apply an inverse transform of the transform applied by the transform processing unit 206, such as an inverse discrete cosine transform (DCT) or an inverse discrete sine transform (DST) or other inverse transform, to obtain a reconstructed residual block 213 (or corresponding dequantized coefficients 213) in the sample domain. The reconstructed residual block 213 may also be referred to as a transform block 213.

[0079] [Rebuild] The reconstruction unit 214 (e.g., an adder or summator 214) is configured to add the transform block 213 (i.e., the reconstructed residual block 213) to the prediction block 265, for example, by adding, sample by sample, sample values of the reconstructed residual block 213 and sample values of the prediction block 265 to obtain a reconstructed block 215 in the sample domain.

[0080] [filter] The loop filter unit 220 (or "loop filter" 220 for short) is configured to filter the reconstruction block 215 to obtain a filtered block 221, or in general, to filter the reconstructed samples to obtain filtered samples. The loop filter unit is configured, for example, to smooth pixel transitions or otherwise improve video quality. The loop filter unit 220 may include one or more loop filters, such as a deblocking filter, a sample adaptive offset (SAO) filter, or one or more other filters, such as a bilateral filter, an adaptive loop filter (ALF), a sharpening, smoothing filter, or a collaborative filter, or any combination thereof. Although the loop filter unit 220 is illustrated in FIG. 2 as being within the loop filter, in other configurations the loop filter unit 220 may be implemented as a post-loop filter. The filtered block 221 may also be referred to as a filtered reconstruction block 221.

[0081] An embodiment of video encoder 20 (respectively loop filter unit 220) may be configured to encode and then output loop filter parameters (such as sample adaptive offset information), e.g., directly or via entropy encoding unit 270, so that, for example, decoder 30 may receive and apply the same loop filter parameters or respective loop filters for decoding.

[0082] [Decoded image buffer] The decoded picture buffer (DPB) 230 may be a memory that stores reference pictures, or generally reference image data, for encoding video data by the video encoder 20. The DPB 230 may be formed by any of a variety of memory devices, such as dynamic random access memory (DRAM), including synchronous dynamic random access memory (SDRAM), magnetoresistive RAM (MRAM), resistive RAM (RRAM), or other types of memory devices. The decoded picture buffer (DPB) 230 may be configured to store one or more filtered blocks 221. The decoded picture buffer 230 may further be configured to store other previously filtered blocks, e.g., previously reconstructed filtered blocks 221, of the same current picture or a different picture, e.g., a previously reconstructed picture, and may provide a complete, previously reconstructed, i.e., decoded picture (corresponding reference blocks and reference samples) and / or a partially reconstructed current picture (corresponding reference blocks and reference samples), e.g., for inter prediction. The decoded picture buffer (DPB) 230 may be configured to store, for example, one or more unfiltered reconstruction blocks 215 if the reconstruction blocks 215 have not been filtered by the loop filter unit 220, or, in general, unfiltered reconstructed samples, or any other further processed version of the reconstructed blocks or samples.

[0083] Mode Selection (Segmentation and Prediction) The mode selection unit 260 comprises a partitioning unit 262, an inter prediction unit 244 and an intra prediction unit 254, and is configured to receive or obtain original image data, e.g., original block 203 (current block 203 of current image 17), and reconstructed image data, e.g., filtered and / or unfiltered reconstructed samples or blocks of the same (current) image and / or from one or more previous decoded images, e.g., from the decoded image buffer 230 or other buffers (e.g., line buffers, not shown). The reconstructed image data is used as reference image data for prediction, e.g., inter prediction or intra prediction, to obtain a prediction block 265 or a predictor 265.

[0084] The mode selection unit 260 may be configured to determine or select a partitioning and prediction mode (e.g., intra or inter prediction mode) for a current block prediction mode (not including partitioning) and generate a corresponding prediction block 265, which is used for calculation of the residual block 205 and for reconstruction of the reconstruction block 215.

[0085] An embodiment of the mode selection unit 260 may be configured to select a partitioning and prediction mode (e.g., from those supported by or available to the mode selection unit 260) that provides the best match, or in other words, the smallest residual (smallest residual means better compression rate for transmission or storage), or the smallest signaling overhead (smallest signaling overhead means better compression rate for transmission or storage), or a consideration or balance of both. The mode selection unit 260 may be configured to determine the partitioning and prediction mode based on rate-distortion optimization (RDO), i.e., to select the prediction mode that provides the smallest rate-distortion. Terms such as “best”, “minimum”, “optimum”, etc. in this context do not necessarily refer to a general “best”, “minimum”, “optimum”, etc., but may refer to the achievement of a termination or selection criterion, such as a value exceeding or falling below a threshold or other constraint, potentially leading to a “less than optimal selection”, but reducing complexity and processing time.

[0086] In other words, the partitioning unit 262 may be configured to partition the block 203 into smaller block partitions or sub-blocks (which again form blocks), e.g., using quadtree partitioning (QT), binary tree partitioning (BT), or ternary tree partitioning (TT), or any combination thereof repeatedly, and to perform, e.g., prediction for each of the block partitions or sub-blocks, where the mode selection includes selecting a tree structure of the partitioned block 203, and a prediction mode is applied to each of the block partitions or sub-blocks.

[0087] The partitioning (eg, by partitioning unit 260) and prediction processes (by inter prediction unit 244 and intra prediction unit 254) performed by exemplary video encoder 20 are described in more detail below.

[0088] [Partitioning] The partitioning unit 262 may partition (or split) the current block 203 into smaller partitions, e.g., smaller blocks of square or rectangular size. These smaller blocks (which may also be referred to as sub-blocks) may be further partitioned into even smaller partitions. This is also referred to as tree partitioning or hierarchical tree partitioning, where a root block, e.g., at root tree level 0 (hierarchical level 0, depth 0), may be recursively partitioned, e.g., into two or more blocks of nodes at the next lower tree level, e.g., tree level 1 (hierarchical level 1, depth 1), which may be partitioned again into two or more blocks at the next lower level, e.g., tree level 2 (hierarchical level 2, depth 2), etc., until the partitioning is terminated, e.g., due to a termination criterion being reached, e.g., due to reaching a maximum tree depth or a minimum block size. Blocks that are not further partitioned are also referred to as leaf blocks or leaf nodes of the tree. A tree that uses a partitioning into two partitions is called a binary tree (BT), a tree that uses a partitioning into three partitions is called a ternary tree (TT), and a tree that uses a partitioning into four partitions is called a quad tree (QT).

[0089] As mentioned above, the term "block" as used herein may be a portion of an image, particularly a square or rectangular portion. For example, with reference to HEVC and VVC, a block may be or may correspond to a coding tree unit (CTU), a coding unit (CU), a prediction unit (PU), and a transform unit (TU), and / or may correspond to a corresponding block, such as a coding tree block (CTB), a coding block (CB), a transform block (TB), or a prediction block (PB).

[0090] For example, a coding tree unit (CTU) may be or include a CTB of luma samples of an image with three sample arrays, two corresponding CTBs of chroma samples, or a CTB of samples of an image coded with three separate color planes and syntax structures used to code a monochrome image or sample. Correspondingly, a coding tree block (CTB) may be an N×N block of samples for some value of N such that the division of components into CTBs is a partitioning. A coding unit (CU) may be or include a coding block of luma samples, two corresponding coding blocks of chroma samples of an image with three sample arrays, or a coding block of samples of an image coded with three separate color planes and syntax structures used to code a monochrome image or sample. Correspondingly, a coding block (CB) may be an M×N block of samples for some values of M and N such that the division of CTBs into coding blocks is a partitioning.

[0091] For example, in an embodiment according to HEVC, a coding tree unit (CTU) may be partitioned into CUs by using a quadtree structure represented as a coding tree. The decision of whether to code an image area using inter-image (temporal) prediction or intra-image (spatial) prediction is made at the CU level. Each CU may be further partitioned into one, two or four PUs according to the partition type of the PU. Inside one PU, the same prediction process is applied, and related information is sent to the decoder on a PU basis. After obtaining the residual block by applying the prediction process based on the partition type of the PU, the CU can be partitioned into another quadtree structure similar to the coding tree for the CU, and thus into transform units (TUs).

[0092] For example, in an embodiment according to the latest video coding standard currently under development, referred to as versatile video coding (VVC), a combined quad-tree and binary tree (QTBT) partitioning is used, for example, to partition the coding block. In the QTBT block structure, the CU may have either a square or a rectangle. For example, the coding tree unit (CTU) is first partitioned by a quad-tree structure. The quad-tree leaf node is further partitioned by a binary tree or a ternary (or triple) tree structure. The partitioning tree leaf node is referred to as the coding unit (CU), and its segmentation is used for prediction and transformation processes without any further partitioning. This means that the CU, PU and TU have the same block size in the QTBT coding block structure. In parallel, multiple partitionings, for example, ternary tree partitioning, may be used with the QTBT block structure.

[0093] In one example, mode selection unit 260 of video encoder 20 may be configured to perform any combination of the partitioning techniques described herein.

[0094] As described above, video encoder 20 is configured to determine or select a best or optimal prediction mode from a set of (e.g., predetermined) prediction modes. The set of prediction modes may include, for example, an intra-prediction mode and / or an inter-prediction mode.

[0095] [Intra prediction] The intra prediction mode settings may include 35 different intra prediction modes, e.g., non-directional modes such as DC (or mean) mode and planar mode, or directional modes, e.g., as defined in HEVC, or may include 67 different intra prediction modes, e.g., non-directional modes such as DC (or mean) mode and planar mode, or directional modes, e.g., as defined in VVC.

[0096] The intra prediction unit 254 is configured to generate an intra prediction block 265 using reconstructed samples of neighboring blocks of the same current image according to an intra prediction mode of the intra prediction mode settings.

[0097] The intra prediction unit 254 (or generally the mode selection unit 260) is further configured to output the intra prediction parameters (or general information indicating the intra prediction mode selected for the block) to the entropy encoding unit 270 in the form of a syntax element 266 to be included in the encoded image data 21, so that, for example, the video decoder 30 may receive and use the prediction parameters for decoding.

[0098] [Inter prediction] The setting (or possible) of the inter prediction mode depends on the available reference image (i.e., a previous, at least partially decoded image, e.g., stored in DBP230) and other inter prediction parameters, e.g., whether the entire reference image or only a portion of the reference image, e.g., a search window area around the area of the current block, is used to search for the best matching reference block, and / or, e.g., whether pixel interpolation, e.g., half / semi-pel and / or quarter-pel interpolation, has or has not been applied.

[0099] In addition to the prediction modes mentioned above, skip mode and / or direct mode may also be applied.

[0100] The inter prediction unit 244 may comprise a motion estimation (ME) unit and a motion compensation (MC) unit (both not shown in FIG. 2). The motion estimation unit may be configured to receive or obtain the image block 203 (the current image block 203 of the current image 17) and the decoded image 231, or at least one or more previous reconstruction blocks, e.g., reconstruction blocks of one or more other / different previous decoded images 231, for motion prediction. For example, a video sequence may include the current image and the previous decoded image 231, or in other words, the current image and the previous decoded image 231 may be part of or form a series of images forming a video sequence.

[0101] The encoder 20 may be configured to, for example, select a reference block from multiple reference blocks of the same or different images of multiple other images, and provide the reference image (or reference image index) and / or an offset (spatial offset) between the position (x, y coordinates) of the reference block and the position of the current block as an inter prediction parameter to the motion estimation unit. This offset is also called a motion vector (MV).

[0102] The motion compensation unit is configured to obtain, e.g., receive, inter prediction parameters and perform inter prediction based on or using the inter prediction parameters to obtain an inter prediction block 265. The motion compensation performed by the motion compensation unit may involve fetching or generating a prediction block based on a motion / block vector determined by motion prediction, possibly performing interpolation up to sub-pixel accuracy. Interpolation filtering may generate additional pixel samples from known pixel samples, thus potentially increasing the number of candidate prediction blocks that can be used to code the image block. Upon receiving a motion vector for the PU of the current image block, the motion compensation unit may locate the prediction block to which the motion vector points in one of the reference image lists.

[0103] The motion compensation unit may also generate syntax elements associated with blocks and video slices for use by video decoder 30 in decoding the image blocks of the video slices. In addition to, or in the alternative to, slices and their respective syntax elements, tile groups and / or tiles and their respective syntax elements may be generated or used.

[0104] [Entropy coding] The entropy encoding unit 270 is configured to, for example, apply an entropy encoding algorithm or scheme (e.g., a variable length coding (VLC) scheme, a context-adaptive VLC scheme (CAVLC), an arithmetic coding scheme, binarization, context-adaptive binary arithmetic coding (CABAC), syntax-based context-adaptive binary arithmetic coding (SBAC), probability interval partitioning entropy (PIPE) coding, or another entropy encoding method or technique), or bypass (no compression), to the quantization coefficients 209, the inter-prediction parameters, the intra-prediction parameters, the loop filter parameters, and / or other syntax elements to obtain encoded image data 21 that can be output via output 272, for example in the form of an encoded bitstream 21, so that, for example, the video decoder 30 may receive and use the parameters for decoding. The encoded bitstream 21 may be transmitted to the video decoder 30 or stored in a memory for later transmission or retrieval by the video decoder 30.

[0105] Other structural variations of the video encoder 20 may be used to encode the video stream. For example, a non-transform-based encoder 20 may quantize the residual signal directly without using the transform processing unit 206 for a particular block or frame. In another implementation, the encoder 20 may have the quantization unit 208 and the inverse quantization unit 210 combined into a single unit.

[0106] [Decoder and Decoding Method] FIG. 3 illustrates an example of a video decoder 30 configured to perform the techniques of the present application. The video decoder 30 is configured to receive encoded image data 21 (e.g., encoded bitstream 21), e.g., encoded by encoder 20, to obtain a decoded image 331. The encoded image data or bitstream includes information for decoding the encoded image data, e.g., data representing image blocks and associated syntax elements of an encoded video slice (and / or tile group or tile). In the example of FIG. 3, the decoder 30 includes an entropy decoding unit 304, an inverse quantization unit 310, an inverse transform processing unit 312, a reconstruction unit 314 (e.g., summer 314), a loop filter 320, a decoded image buffer (DBP) 330, a mode application unit 360, an inter prediction unit 344, and an intra prediction unit 354. The inter prediction unit 344 may be or include a motion compensation unit. Video decoder 30, in some examples, may perform a generally inverse decoding pass relative to the encoding pass described in connection with video encoder 100 of FIG.

[0107] As described with respect to the encoder 20, the inverse quantization unit 210, the inverse transform processing unit 212, the reconstruction unit 214, the loop filter 220, the decoded picture buffer (DPB) 230, the inter prediction unit 344, and the intra prediction unit 354 are also referred to as forming a “built-in decoder” of the video encoder 20. Thus, the inverse quantization unit 310 may be functionally identical to the inverse quantization unit 110, the inverse transform processing unit 312 may be functionally identical to the inverse transform processing unit 212, the reconstruction unit 314 may be functionally identical to the reconstruction unit 214, the loop filter 320 may be functionally identical to the loop filter 220, and the decoded picture buffer 330 may be functionally identical to the decoded picture buffer 230. Thus, the description provided for the respective units and functions of the video encoder 20 correspondingly applies to the respective units and functions of the video decoder 30.

[0108] [Entropy Decoding] The entropy decoding unit 304 is configured to parse the bitstream 21 (or encoded image data 21 in general) and, for example, perform entropy decoding on the encoded image data 21 to obtain, for example, quantization coefficients 309 and / or decoded coding parameters (not shown in FIG. 3), for example, any or all of inter prediction parameters (e.g., reference image index and motion vectors), intra prediction parameters (e.g., intra prediction mode or index), transform parameters, quantization parameters, loop filter parameters, and / or other syntax elements. The entropy decoding unit 304 may be configured to apply a decoding algorithm or scheme corresponding to the encoding schemes described with respect to the entropy encoding unit 270 of the encoder 20. The entropy decoding unit 304 may be further configured to provide the inter prediction parameters, intra prediction parameters, and / or other syntax elements to the mode application unit 360 and other parameters to other units of the decoder 30. The video decoder 30 may receive syntax elements at a video slice level and / or at a video block level. In addition to or as an alternative to slices and their respective syntax elements, tile groups and / or tiles and their respective syntax elements may be received and / or used.

[0109] [Dequantization] Inverse quantization unit 310 may be configured to receive (e.g., by parsing and / or decoding, e.g., by entropy decoding unit 304) a quantization parameter (QP) (or information generally related to inverse quantization) and quantized coefficients from encoded image data 21, and to apply inverse quantization to the decoded quantized coefficients 309 based on the quantization parameter to obtain dequantized coefficients 311, which may also be referred to as transform coefficients 311. The inverse quantization process may involve use of a quantization parameter determined by video encoder 20 for each video block within a video slice (or tile or tile group) to determine the degree of quantization, and thus the degree of inverse quantization, to be applied.

[0110] [Inverse Transformation] The inverse transform processing unit 312 may be configured to receive the dequantized coefficients 311, also referred to as transform coefficients 311, and apply a transform to the dequantized coefficients 311 to obtain the reconstructed residual block 213 in the sample domain. The reconstructed residual block 213 may also be referred to as a transform block 313. The transform may be an inverse transform, e.g., an inverse DCT, an inverse DST, an inverse integer transform, or a conceptually similar inverse transform process. The inverse transform processing unit 312 may be further configured to receive transform parameters or corresponding information from the encoded image data 21 (e.g., by parsing and / or decoding, e.g., by the entropy decoding unit 304) and determine a transform to be applied to the dequantized coefficients 311.

[0111] [Rebuild] The reconstruction unit 314 (e.g., an adder or summator 314) may be configured to add the reconstructed residual block 313 to the prediction block 365, for example by adding sample values of the reconstructed residual block 313 and sample values of the prediction block 365, to obtain a reconstructed block 315 in the sample domain.

[0112] [filter] The loop filter unit 320 (either in the coding loop or after the coding loop) is configured to filter the reconstruction block 315 to obtain a filtered block 321, e.g., to smooth pixel transitions or otherwise improve video quality. The loop filter unit 320 may include one or more loop filters, such as a deblocking filter, a sample adaptive offset (SAO) filter, or one or more other filters, e.g., a bilateral filter, an adaptive loop filter (ALF), a sharpening, a smoothing filter, or a collaborative filter, or any combination thereof. Although the loop filter unit 320 is illustrated in FIG. 3 as being in the loop filter, in other configurations, the loop filter unit 320 may be implemented as a post-loop filter.

[0113] [Decoded image buffer] The decoded video blocks 321 of the picture are then stored in a decoded picture buffer 330, which stores the decoded picture 331 as a reference picture for subsequent motion compensation of other pictures and / or for outputting a display, respectively. The decoder 30 is configured to output the decoded picture 311, for example via an output 312, for presentation or viewing to a user.

[0114] [prediction] The inter prediction unit 344 may be identical to the inter prediction unit 244 (in particular the motion compensation unit), and the intra prediction unit 354 may be functionally identical to the inter prediction unit 254, performing the partitioning or partitioning decision and prediction based on the partitioning and / or prediction parameters or respective information received (e.g., by parsing and / or decoding, e.g., by the entropy decoding unit 304) from the encoded image data 21. The mode application unit 360 may be configured to perform prediction (intra or inter prediction) for each block based on the reconstructed image, block, or respective samples (filtered or unfiltered) to obtain a prediction block 365.

[0115] If the video slice is coded as an intra-coded (I) slice, the intra prediction unit 354 of the mode application unit 360 is configured to generate a prediction block 365 for an image block of the current video slice based on the signaled intra prediction mode and data from previously decoded blocks of the current image.

[0116] If the video picture is coded as an inter-coded (i.e., B or P) slice, the inter prediction unit 344 (e.g., motion compensation unit) of the mode application unit 360 is configured to generate a prediction block 365 for a video block of the current video slice based on the motion vector and other syntax elements received from the entropy decoding unit 304. In inter prediction, the prediction block may be generated from one of a number of reference pictures included in one of a number of reference picture lists. The video decoder 30 may construct the reference frame lists, List 0 and List 1, based on the reference pictures stored in the DPB 330 using a default construction technique. The same or similar may apply for or by embodiments that additionally or alternatively use tile groups (e.g., video tile groups) and / or tiles (e.g., video tiles) in slices (e.g., video slices). For example, the video may be coded using I, P, or B tile groups and / or tiles.

[0117] Mode application unit 360 is configured to determine prediction information for video blocks of the current video slice by analyzing motion vectors or related information and other syntax elements, and uses the above-mentioned prediction information to generate predictive blocks for the current video block being decoded. For example, mode application unit 360 uses some of the received syntax elements to determine a prediction mode (e.g., intra or inter prediction) used to encode the video blocks of the video slice, an inter prediction slice type (e.g., B slice, P slice, or GPB slice), construction information regarding one or more of the reference image lists for the slice, a motion vector for each inter encoded video block of the slice, an inter prediction status for each inter encoded video block of the slice, and other information for decoding video blocks in the current video slice. The same or similar may apply for or with embodiments that additionally or alternatively use tile groups (e.g., video tile groups) and / or tiles (e.g., video tiles) in slices (e.g., video slices). For example, a video may be encoded using I, P, or B tile groups and / or tiles.

[0118] The embodiment of video decoder 30 shown in FIG. 3 may be configured to partition and / or decode an image using slices (also referred to as video slices), where an image may be partitioned or decoded using one or more slices (typically non-overlapping), and each slice may include one or more blocks (e.g., CTUs).

[0119] The embodiment of video decoder 30 shown in FIG. 3 may be configured to partition and / or decode an image using tile groups (also referred to as video tile groups) and / or tiles (also referred to as video tiles), where an image may be partitioned or decoded using one or more tile groups (typically non-overlapping), where each tile group may, for example, include one or more blocks (e.g., CTUs) or one or more tiles, where each tile may, for example, be rectangular in shape and include one or more blocks (e.g., CTUs), e.g., complete or partial blocks.

[0120] Other variations of the video decoder 30 may be used to decode the encoded image data 21. For example, the decoder 30 may generate an output video stream without using a loop filtering unit 320. For example, a non-transform-based decoder 30 may directly inverse quantize the residual signal without using an inverse transform processing unit 312 for a particular block or frame. In another implementation, the video decoder 30 may have the inverse quantization unit 310 and the inverse transform processing unit 312 combined into a single unit.

[0121] It should be understood that in the encoder 20 and the decoder 30, the processing result of the current stage may be further processed and then output to the next stage. For example, after the interpolation filtering, the motion vector derivation or the loop filtering, further operations such as clipping or shifting may be performed on the processing result of the interpolation filtering, the motion vector derivation or the loop filtering.

[0122] It should be noted that further operations may be applied to the derived motion vector of the current block (including but not limited to control point motion vector in affine mode, sub-block motion vector in affine, planar, ATMVP mode, temporal motion vector, etc.). For example, the value of the motion vector is restricted to a range predefined by its representation bits. If the representation bits of the motion vector are bitDepth, i.e., the range is -2^(bitDepth-1) to 2^(bitDepth-1)-1, where "^" means exponentiation. For example, if bitDepth is set equal to 16, the range is -32768 to 32767, and if bitDepth is set equal to 18, the range is -131072 to 131071. For example, the value of the derived motion vector (e.g., MV of four 4x4 sub-blocks in one 8x8 block) is restricted such that the maximum difference between the integer parts of the four 4x4 sub-block MVs is less than or equal to N pixels, such as less than or equal to 1 pixel. Here, we provide two methods to constrain motion vectors by bitDepth.

[0123] Method 1: Remove the overflow MSB (most significant bit) using flow calculation.

[0124] mvx is the horizontal component of the motion vector of the image block or sub-block, mvy is the vertical component of the motion vector of the image block or sub-block, and ux and uy denote intermediate values.

[0125] For example, if after applying equations (1) and (2), the value of mvx is -32769, the resulting value is 32767. In computer systems, decimal numbers are stored as two's complement. The two's complement of -32769 is 1, 0111, 1111, 1111, 1111 (17 bits), and then the MSB is discarded so the resulting two's complement is 0111, 1111, 1111, 1111 (decimal number is 32767), which is the same as the output by applying equations (1) and (2).

Thus, device 500 may be implemented in a wide variety of configurations.

[0139] [Background technology] [Parameter set] The parameter sets are essentially similar and share the same fundamental design goals (i.e., bitrate efficiency, error resilience, and providing a system layer interface). In HEVC (H.265), there is a hierarchy of parameter sets, including video parameter sets (VPS), sequence parameter sets (SPS), and picture parameter sets (PPS), which are similar to their counterparts in AVC and VVC. Each slice references a single active PPS, the SPS, and the VPS, to access information used to decode the slice. Since the PPS contains information that applies to all slices in a picture, all slices in a picture must reference the same PPS. Slices in different pictures can also reference the same PPS. Similarly, the SPS contains information that applies to all pictures in the same coded video sequence.

[0140] Although the PPS may be different for each individual picture, it is common for many or all pictures in a coded video sequence to reference the same PPS. Reusing parameter sets is bitrate efficient since it avoids the need to transmit shared information multiple times. It is also loss robust since it allows the content of a parameter set to be carried by some more reliable external communication link or repeated frequently within the bitstream to ensure that it is not lost.

[0141] Sequence Parameter Set (SPS): A syntax structure containing zero or more syntax elements that apply to the entire CLVSS, as determined by the contents of syntax elements in the PPS referenced by syntax elements in each image header.

[0142] A parameter set (such as a VPS or SPS) is usually encapsulated in a Raw Byte Sequence Payload (RBSP), a syntax structure that contains an integer number of bytes encapsulated in a NAL unit and is either empty or a data string bit sequence containing the syntax elements followed by an RBSP stop bit and zero or more trailing bits equal to 0.

[0143] A NAL unit is a syntax structure that contains bytes containing an indication of the type of data that follows and the data in the form of a Raw Byte Sequence Payload (RBSP) interspersed with an optional emulation prevention byte, e.g. a byte equal to 0x03.

[0144] In general, NAL units in a bitstream can be divided into two classes: video coding layer (VCL) NAL units and non-VCL NAL units. NAL units that contain parameter sets that do not provide essential coded data of a picture (e.g., VPS or SPS) belong to the non-VCL NAL unit type. In contrast, NAL units that contain essential coded data of a picture (e.g., I-picture coded video data) are called VCL NAL units.

[0145] In VVC Draft 8 in Table 5, the NAL unit type of each NAL unit and its classification are defined.

[0146] For further details, please refer to VVC Draft 8.

[0147] In other words, first the parameter set is encapsulated in the RBSP, and then the RBSP is encapsulated in the NAL unit. When the parameter set is encapsulated in the RBSP, some extra dummy bits may be added to ensure that the RBSP is byte-aligned. When the RBSP is encapsulated in the NAL unit, a NAL unit header is added to the beginning of the NAL unit header. The NAL unit header has the following syntax elements: [Table 1] forbidden_zero_bit shall be equal to 0. nuh_reserved_zero_bit shall be equal to 0. nuh_layer_id specifies the identifier of the layer to which a VCL NAL unit belongs, or the identifier of the layer to which a non-VCL NAL unit applies. nal_unit_type specifies the NAL unit type, that is, the type of RBSP data structure included in the NAL unit specified in Table 5 of VVC Draft 8. nuh_temporal_id_plus1 minus 1 specifies the temporal identifier of the NAL unit.

[0148] [Scalable Video Coding, Layers and Video Parameter Sets (VPS)] Scalable video coding provides a mechanism for coding video in multiple layers, with each layer representing a different quality representation of the same video scene. A reference layer (BL) is the lowest quality representation. One or more enhancement layers (ELS) are coded with reference to lower layers and may provide improved video quality. Decoding a subset of the layers of a scalably coded video bitstream results in video of lower, but still acceptable, quality than decoding the full bitstream. This allows for more gradual degradation of video quality compared to non-scalable video bitstreams, where a reduction in bitrate typically results in a more severe degradation of video quality, which can often quickly become unwatchable.

[0149] There are multiple types of scalability in a scalable video sequence, including temporal scalability, spatial scalability, quality scalability, etc. Figure 6 provides an example showing both spatial and temporal scalability. In Figure 6, there are two layers coded at different resolutions. BL is a lower resolution and EL is a higher resolution, and the decoder achieves spatial scalability by providing decoding of either BL, EL, or both. In addition to spatial scalability, temporal scalability is also achieved within the coding layers. In this example, each coding layer is divided into two temporal sublayers, labeled by temporal IDs 0 and 1, respectively. Temporal scalability is achieved by the decoder providing decoding of either temporal sublayer 0 (temporal ID equals 0) or both sublayers 0 and 1.

[0150] Pictures of different layers are assigned different layer IDs, e.g., by the syntax element nuh_layer_id. A Coded Layer Video Sequence (CLVS) is a set of pictures with the same value of nuh_layer_id, consisting, in decoding order, of a special Coded Layer Video Sequence Start Coded Picture (CLVSS, e.g., an intra picture), followed by zero or more pictures that are not CLVSS pictures, including all subsequent pictures up to that point, but not including any subsequent pictures that are CLVSS pictures.

[0151] A Coded Video Sequence (CVS) for which VPS is applicable consists of one or more Coded Layer Video Sequences (CLVS). In the example of Figure 6, assuming that the first images of BL and EL are CLVSS images and all other images are not CLVSS images, this is a CVS consisting of two CLVSSs.

[0152] The layer includes an independent layer or a dependent layer, and the prediction of the dependent layer needs to use inter-layer prediction with reference to its one or more reference layers, and the layer ID of the reference layer may be lower than the layer ID of the dependent layer. The independent layer is predicted without using inter-layer prediction.

[0153] Pictures belonging to different layers that are associated together for output form an Access Unit (AU). For example, in Figure 6, picture A and picture B belong to the same AU.

[0154] FIG. 7 shows an image divided into four tiles (two tile columns and two tile rows), four rectangular slices, and three sub-images.

[0155] A snapshot of some of the VPS layer and sublayer information in ITU JVET-Q2001-v13 is shown in some parts of the table below, and the download links are below: http: / / phenix.it-sudparis.eu / jvet / doc_end_user / documents / 17_Brussels / wg11 / JVET-Q2001-v13.zip.

[0156] In the remainder of this application, this document will be referred to as VVC Draft8 for brevity. [Table 2]

[0157] According to VVC Draft8, vps_video_parameter_set_id provides an identifier for the VPS for reference by other syntax elements (e.g., SPS). The value of vps_video_parameter_set_id shall be greater than 0.

[0158] vps_max_layers_minus1 plus1 specifies the maximum number of layers allowed in each CVS that references the VPS.

[0159] vps_max_sublayers_minus1 plus 1 specifies the maximum number of temporal sublayers that may be present in each CVS layer that references the VPS. The value of vps_max_sublayers_minus1 MUST be in the range 0 to 6, inclusive.

[0160] vps_all_layers_same_num_sublayers_flag equal to 1 specifies that all layers in each CVS referencing the VPS have the same number of temporal sublayers. vps_all_layers_same_num_sublayers_flag equal to 0 specifies that layers in each CVS referencing the VPS may or may not have the same number of temporal sublayers. If not present, the value of vps_all_layers_same_num_sublayers_flag is inferred to be equal to 1. If not present, vps_max_layers_minus1 equal to 0 or vps_max_sublayers_minus1 equal to 0 means there is at most 1 layer in the CVS or at most 1 sublayer in the CVS.

[0161] vps_all_independent_layers_flag, when equal to 1, specifies that all layers in the CVS are coded independently without inter-layer prediction. vps_all_independent_layers_flag, when equal to 0, specifies that one or more layers in the CVS can use inter-layer prediction. If not present, the value of vps_all_independent_layers_flag is inferred to be equal to 1. It makes sense that this flag is set only if there are multiple layers in the CVS.

[0162] vps_layer_id[i] specifies the value of nuh_layer_id for the i-th layer. For any two non-negative integer values m and n, if m is less than n, then the value of vps_layer_id[m] shall be less than vps_layer_id[n].

[0163] vps_independent_layer_flag[i] equal to 1 specifies that the layer with index i does not use inter-layer prediction. vps_independent_layer_flag[i] equal to 0 specifies that the layer with index i can use inter-layer prediction and that a syntax element vps_direct_ref_layer_flag[i][j] with j in the range 0 to i-1, inclusive, is present in the VPS. If not present, the value of vps_independent_layer_flag[i] is inferred to be equal to 1.

[0164] vps_direct_ref_layer_flag[i][j] equal to 0 specifies that the layer with index j is not a direct reference layer of the layer with index i. vps_direct_ref_layer_flag[i][j] equal to 1 specifies that the layer with index j is a direct reference layer of the layer with index i. If vps_direct_ref_layer_flag[i][j] does not exist for i and j in the range from 0 to vps_max_layers_minus1 inclusive, it is inferred to be equal to 0. If vps_independent_layer_flag[i] is equal to 0, there shall be at least one value of j in the range from 0 to i-1 inclusive such that the value of vps_direct_ref_layer_flag[i][j] is equal to 1.

[0165] There are other syntax elements signaled in the VPS, but they are not relevant to the present invention; see VVC Draft 8 for a detailed description.

[0166] [Sequence Parameter Set (SPS)] An SPS contains parameters that apply to one or more layers of a coded video sequence and does not change from picture to picture within a coded video sequence. Typically, one SPS applies to one CLVSS and contains a VPS identifier that indicates which VPS it refers to. If multiple SPSs that apply to different CLVSSs refer to the same VPS, the VPS identifiers of those SPSs shall be identical.

[0167] Some parts of the table below show snapshots of some of the signaling of layer-related syntax elements of an SPS in VVC Draft8. [Table 3]

[0168] [DPB parameter syntax] [Table 4]

[0169] The sps_seq_parameter_set_id provides an identifier for the SPS for reference by other syntax elements (e.g., image parameter sets).

[0170] If sps_video_parameter_set_id is greater than 0, it specifies the value of vps_video_parameter_set_id of the VPS referenced by the SPS.

[0171] If sps_video_parameter_set_id is equal to 0, the following applies: -SPS does not refer to VPS. -When decoding each CLVS that references the SPS, the VPS is not referenced. The value of -vps_max_layers_minus1 is inferred to be equal to 0. - A CVS contains only one layer (i.e., all VCL NAL units in a CVS must have the same value of nuh_layer_id). -The value of GeneralLayerIdx[nuh_layer_id] is inferred to be equal to 0. The value of -vps_independent_layer_flag[GeneralLayerIdx[nuh_layer_id]] is inferred to be equal to 1.

[0172] The variable GeneralLayerIdx[nuh_layer_id] is obtained using the following process.

number

[0173] The values of vps_max_layers_minus1 and vps_layer_id[i], for i from 0 to vps_max_layers_minus1, inclusive, are signaled in the VPS.

[0174] The value of vps_independent_layer_flag[i], for i from 1 to vps_max_layers_minus1, inclusive, is signaled in the VPS.

[0175] According to VVC Draft8, sps_max_sublayers_minus1 plus 1 specifies the maximum number of temporal sublayers that may exist in each CLVS that references an SPS. The value of sps_max_sublayers_minus1 shall be in the range from 0 to vps_max_sublayers_minus1, inclusive.

[0176] In bitstreams conforming to this specification, sps_reserved_zero_4bits shall be equal to 0. Other values of sps_reserved_zero_4bits are reserved for future use by ITU-T | ISO / IEC.

[0177] sps_ptl_dpb_hrd_params_present_flag equal to 1 specifies that the profile_tier_level() and dpb_parameters() syntax structures are present in the SPS, and that the general_hrd_parameters() and ols_hrd_parameters() syntax structures may also be present in the SPS. sps_ptl_dpb_hrd_params_present_flag equal to 0 specifies that none of these four syntax structures are present in the SPS. The value of sps_ptl_dpb_hrd_params_present_flag shall be equal to vps_independent_layer_flag[GeneralLayerIdx[nuh_layer_id]].

[0178] sps_general_hrd_params_present_flag does not allow the signaling of general_hrd_parameters() and ols_hrd_parameters(). Therefore, even if sps_ptl_dpb_hrd_params_present_flag is equal to 1, the signaling of general_hrd_parameters() and ols_hrd_parameters() is not guaranteed. However, the syntax structures profile_tier_level() and dpb_parameters() are directly controlled by the flag of sps_ptl_dpb_hrd_params_present_flag. Therefore, these two syntaxes are always signaled when the value of sps_ptl_dpb_hrd_params_present_flag is equal to 1. For details on the syntax structure of profile_tier_level(), dpb_parameters(), general_hrd_parameters(), and ols_hrd_parameters(), see VVC Draft 8. Also, there is a restriction on the syntax of sps_ptl_dpb_hrd_params_present_flag, and the value shall be equal to 1 if the SPS containing it applies to an independent layer (i.e., vps_independent_layer_flag[GeneralLayerIdx[nuh_layer_id]] is equal to 1).

[0179] When inter_layer_ref_pics_present_flag is equal to 0, it specifies that ILRP is not used for inter prediction of coded pictures in CLVS. When inter_layer_ref_pics_present_flag is equal to 1, it specifies that ILRP may be used for inter prediction of one or more coded pictures in CLVS. If sps_video_parameter_set_id is equal to 0, the value of inter_layer_ref_pics_present_flag is inferred to be equal to 0. If vps_independent_layer_flag[GeneralLayerIdx[nuh_layer_id]] is equal to 1, the value of inter_layer_ref_pics_present_flag shall be equal to 0.

[0180] ILRP is an abbreviation for inter-layer reference picture, which is a term that represents a picture used for inter-prediction of a picture in the same AU whose nuh_layer_id is smaller than the nuh_layer_id of the current picture. For example, in Figure 6, if picture A is used for inter-prediction of picture B, then A is the ILRP of picture B.

[0181] The dpb_parameters() syntax structure provides information about the DPB size, maximum image reordering, and maximum latency for one or more OLSs.

[0182] If the VPS contains a dpb_parameters() syntax structure, the OLS to which the dpb_parameters() syntax structure applies is specified by the VPS. If the SPS contains a dpb_parameters() syntax structure, it applies to the OLS that contains only the lowest layer among the layers that reference the SPS, and this lowest layer is an independent layer.

[0183] dpb_max_dec_pic_buffering_minus1[i] plus 1 specifies the maximum requested size of the DPB in units of picture storage buffers when Htid is equal to i. The value of dpb_max_dec_pic_buffering_minus1[i] shall range from 0 to MaxDpbSize-1 inclusive, where MaxDpbSize is specified in Section A.4.2. If i is greater than 0, dpb_max_dec_pic_buffering_minus1[i] shall be greater than or equal to dpb_max_dec_pic_buffering_minus1[i-1]. If dpb_max_dec_pic_buffering_minus1[i] is not in the range from 0 to MaxSubLayersMinus1-1 inclusive due to subLayerInfoFlag equal to 0, it is inferred to be equal to dpb_max_dec_pic_buffering_minus1[MaxSubLayersMinus1].

[0184] dpb_max_num_reorder_pics[i] specifies the maximum allowed number of images in the OLS that can precede any image in the OLS and follow it in output order in decoding order when Htid is equal to i. The value of dpb_max_num_reorder_pics[i] shall be in the range from 0 to dpb_max_dec_pic_buffering_minus1[i], inclusive. If i is greater than 0, dpb_max_num_reorder_pics[i] shall be greater than or equal to dpb_max_num_reorder_pics[i-1]. If dpb_max_num_reorder_pics[i] is not present for i in the range from 0 to MaxSubLayersMinus1-1, inclusive, due to subLayerInfoFlag equal to 0, it is inferred to be equal to dpb_max_num_reorder_pics[MaxSubLayersMinus1]. dpb_max_latency_increase_plus1[i] not equal to 0 is used to calculate the value of MaxLatencyPictures[i] and specifies the maximum number of pictures in the OLS that can precede any picture in the OLS in output order and follow that picture in decoding order, when Htid is equal to i.

[0185] If dpb_max_latency_increase_plus1[i] is not equal to 0, the value of MaxLatencyPictures[i] is specified as follows:

[0186] MaxLatencyPictures[i]=dpb_max_num_reorder_pics[i]+dpb_max_latency_increase_plus1[i]-1(106).

[0187] If dpb_max_latency_increase_plus1[i] is equal to 0, the corresponding limit is not expressed.

[0188] The value of dpb_max_latency_increase_plus1[i] shall be in the range from 0 to 2-2, inclusive. If dpb_max_latency_increase_plus1[i] is not in the range of i from 0 to MaxSubLayersMinus1-1, inclusive, due to subLayerInfoFlag equal to 0, it is inferred to be equal to dpb_max_latency_increase_plus1[MaxSubLayersMinus1].

[0189] There are two restrictions on the value of inter_layer_ref_pics_present_flag: If the value of sps_video_parameter_set_id is equal to 0, i.e., if there is only one layer in the CVS, the value of inter_layer_ref_pics_present_flag shall be equal to 0. If the value of vps_independent_layer_flag[GeneralLayerIdx[nuh_layer_id]] is equal to 1, i.e., if the current CVS is an independent layer, the value of inter_layer_ref_pics_present_flag shall be equal to 0.

[0190] It has been observed that the signaling of the sps_video_parameter_set_id, sps_ptl_dpb_hrd_params_present_flag, and inter_layer_ref_pics_present_flag syntax elements results in redundant information being signaled in some cases.

[0191] The embodiments proposed below seek to eliminate such redundancy resulting from these syntax elements, thus improving signaling efficiency.

[0192] According to the first embodiment, the syntax element sps_ptl_dpb_hrd_params_present_flag is signaled only if the value of sps_video_parameter_set_id is not equal to 0 and is highlighted as follows: Table 1: Syntax elements of an SPS [Table 5]

[0193] The reason is that if sps_video_parameter_set_id is equal to 0, then the value of vps_independent_layer_flag[GeneralLayerIdx[nuh_layer_id]] shall be equal to 1, and the value of sps_ptl_dpb_hrd_params_present_flag shall be equal to the value of vps_independent_layer_flag[GeneralLayerIdx[nuh_layer_id]], i.e. 1. Therefore, there is no need to signal the value of sps_ptl_dpb_hrd_params_present_flag. Instead, its value is inferred to be 1 when the value of sps_video_parameter_set_id is equal to 0. The meaning of sps_ptl_dpb_hrd_params_present_flag has been changed as follows, and the added parts are highlighted.

[0194] When sps_ptl_dpb_hrd_params_present_flag is equal to 1, it specifies that the profile_tier_level() and dpb_parameters() syntax structures are present in the SPS, and that the general_hrd_parameters() and ols_hrd_parameters() syntax structures may also be present in the SPS. When sps_ptl_dpb_hrd_params_present_flag is equal to 0, it specifies that none of these four syntax structures are present in the SPS. The value of sps_ptl_dpb_hrd_params_present_flag shall be equal to vps_independent_layer_flag[GeneralLayerIdx[nuh_layer_id]]. If not present, the value of sps_ptl_dpb_hrd_params_present_flag is inferred to be equal to 1.

[0195] According to the second embodiment, the syntax element inter_layer_ref_pics_present_flag is signaled based on the syntax elements sps_ptl_dpb_hrd_params_present_flag and sps_video_parameter_set_id as follows: Table 2: Syntax elements of an SPS [Table 6]

[0196] The reason is that if sps_video_parameter_set_id is equal to 0, then the value of vps_independent_layer_flag[GeneralLayerIdx[nuh_layer_id]] shall be equal to 1 and the value of inter_layer_ref_pics_present_flag shall be equal to 0. Similarly, if the value of sps_ptl_dpb_hrd_params_present_flag is equal to 1, then the value of vps_independent_layer_flag[GeneralLayerIdx[nuh_layer_id]] shall be the same, i.e., 1. Therefore, due to the constraints applied to the semantics of inter_layer_ref_pics_present_flag, the value of inter_layer_ref_pics_present_flag shall be equal to 0.

[0197] In these two cases, there is no need to signal the value of inter_layer_ref_pics_present_flag. Instead, its value is inferred to be 0. We change the meaning of inter_layer_ref_pics_present_flag as follows, with the changes highlighted:

[0198] When inter_layer_ref_pics_present_flag is equal to 0, it specifies that ILRP is not used for inter prediction of coded pictures in CLVS. When inter_layer_ref_pics_present_flag is equal to 1, it specifies that ILRP may be used for inter prediction of one or more coded pictures in CLVS. If not present, the value of inter_layer_ref_pics_present_flag is inferred to be equal to 0.

[0199] According to the third embodiment, the syntax element inter_layer_ref_pics_present_flag is signaled based on the syntax element sps_video_parameter_set_id as follows: Table 3: Syntax elements of an SPS [Table 7]

[0200] The reason is that if sps_video_parameter_set_id is equal to 0, then the value of vps_independent_layer_flag[GeneralLayerIdx[nuh_layer_id]] shall be equal to 1, and the value of inter_layer_ref_pics_present_flag shall be equal to 0. In this case, there is no need to signal the value of inter_layer_ref_pics_present_flag. Instead, its value is inferred to be 0. We change the meaning of inter_layer_ref_pics_present_flag as follows, highlighting the changes:

[0201] When inter_layer_ref_pics_present_flag is equal to 0, it specifies that ILRP is not used for inter prediction of coded pictures in CLVS. When inter_layer_ref_pics_present_flag is equal to 1, it specifies that ILRP may be used for inter prediction of one or more coded pictures in CLVS. When vps_independent_layer_flag[GeneralLayerIdx[nuh_layer_id]] is equal to 1, the value of inter_layer_ref_pics_present_flag shall be equal to 0. If not present, the value of inter_layer_ref_pics_present_flag is inferred to be equal to 0.

[0202] According to the fourth embodiment, the syntax element inter_layer_ref_pics_present_flag is signaled based on the syntax element sps_ptl_dpb_hrd_params_present_flag as follows: Table 4: Syntax elements of an SPS [Table 8]

[0203] The reason is that if the value of sps_ptl_dpb_hrd_params_present_flag is equal to 1, the value of vps_independent_layer_flag[GeneralLayerIdx[nuh_layer_id]] shall be the same, i.e. 1. Therefore, due to the constraints that apply to the semantics of inter_layer_ref_pics_present_flag, the value of inter_layer_ref_pics_present_flag shall be equal to 0.

[0204] In this case, there is no need to signal the value of inter_layer_ref_pics_present_flag. Instead, its value is inferred to be 0. We change the meaning of inter_layer_ref_pics_present_flag as follows, with the changes highlighted:

[0205] When inter_layer_ref_pics_present_flag is equal to 0, it specifies that ILRP is not used for inter prediction of coded pictures in CLVS. When inter_layer_ref_pics_present_flag is equal to 1, it specifies that ILRP may be used for inter prediction of one or more coded pictures in CLVS. When sps_video_parameter_set_id is equal to 0, the value of inter_layer_ref_pics_present_flag shall be equal to 0. If not present, the value of inter_layer_ref_pics_present_flag is inferred to be equal to 0.

[0206] According to the fifth embodiment, the syntax element inter_layer_ref_pics_present_flag is signaled based on the syntax elements sps_ptl_dpb_hrd_params_present_flag and sps_video_parameter_set_id as follows: Table 5: Syntax elements of an SPS [Table 9]

[0207] The reason is that if sps_video_parameter_set_id is equal to 0, then the value of vps_independent_layer_flag[GeneralLayerIdx[nuh_layer_id]] shall be equal to 1 and the value of inter_layer_ref_pics_present_flag shall be equal to 0. Similarly, if the value of sps_ptl_dpb_hrd_params_present_flag is equal to 1, then the value of vps_independent_layer_flag[GeneralLayerIdx[nuh_layer_id]] shall be the same, i.e., equal to 1.

[0208] Therefore, due to the constraints that apply to the semantics of inter_layer_ref_pics_present_flag, the value of inter_layer_ref_pics_present_flag shall be equal to 0.

[0209] In these two cases, there is no need to signal the value of inter_layer_ref_pics_present_flag. Instead, its value is inferred to be 0. We change the meaning of inter_layer_ref_pics_present_flag as follows, with the changes highlighted:

[0210] When inter_layer_ref_pics_present_flag is equal to 0, it specifies that ILRP is not used for inter prediction of coded pictures in CLVS. When inter_layer_ref_pics_present_flag is equal to 1, it specifies that ILRP may be used for inter prediction of one or more coded pictures in CLVS. If not present, the value of inter_layer_ref_pics_present_flag is inferred to be equal to 0.

[0211] The VPS is a NAL unit that is not required for the bitstream. Therefore, some syntax elements in the VPS may not always be available. However, the meaning of some syntax elements in the SPS depends on syntax elements in the VPS, which may be problematic.

[0212] For example, the meaning of sps_max_sublayers_minus1 is defined as follows:

[0213] sps_max_sublayers_minus1 plus 1 specifies the maximum number of temporal sublayers that may exist in each CLVS that references an SPS. The value of sps_max_sublayers_minus1 shall be in the range from 0 to vps_max_sublayers_minus1, inclusive.

[0214] However, if VPS is not present in the bitstream and no estimate is defined for the syntax element vps_max_sublayers_minus1, the above range constraint for sps_max_sublayers_minus1:

[0215] "The value of sps_max_sublayers_minus1 shall be in the range from 0 to vps_max_sublayers_minus1 inclusive" is not defined.

[0216] Considering the case where VPS is not present in the bitstream, the meaning of sps_max_sublayers_minus1 is changed as follows:

[0217] sps_max_sublayers_minus1 plus 1 specifies the maximum number of temporal sublayers that may be present in each CLVS that references an SPS. If a VPS is present, the value of sps_max_sublayers_minus1 shall range from 0 to vps_max_sublayers_minus1 inclusive. If a VPS is not present, the value of sps_max_sublayers_minus1 shall range from 0 to 6 inclusive.

[0218] sps_max_sublayers_minus1 plus 1 specifies the maximum number of temporal sublayers that may be present in each CLVS that references an SPS. If vps_max_sublayers_minus1 is present, the value of sps_max_sublayers_minus1 shall range from 0 to vps_max_sublayers_minus1 inclusive. If vps_max_sublayers_minus1 is not present or is inferred, the value of sps_max_sublayers_minus1 shall range from 0 to 6 inclusive.

[0219] The following is a description of the application of the encoding and decoding methods of the present application as illustrated in the above embodiments, and the systems using them.

[0220] 8 is a block diagram showing a content supply system 3100 for realizing a content distribution service. The content supply system 3100 includes a capture device 3102, a terminal device 3106, and optionally a display 3126. The capture device 3102 communicates with the terminal device 3106 via a communication link 3104. The communication link may include the communication channel 13 described above. The communication link 3104 includes, but is not limited to, WIFI, Ethernet, cable, wireless (3G / 4G / 5G), USB, or any kind of combination thereof.

[0221] The capture device 3102 may generate data and encode the data by the encoding method as shown in the above embodiment. Alternatively, the capture device 3102 may deliver the data to a streaming server (not shown), which encodes the data and transmits the encoded data to the terminal device 3106. The capture device 3102 includes, but is not limited to, a camera, a smartphone or pad, a computer or laptop, a video conferencing system, a PDA, an in-vehicle device, or any combination thereof. For example, as described above, the capture device 3102 may include the source device 12. If the data includes video, the video encoder 20 included in the capture device 3102 may actually perform the video encoding process. If the data includes audio (i.e., voice), the audio encoder included in the capture device 3102 may actually perform the audio encoding process. For some practical scenarios, the capture device 3102 delivers the encoded video and audio data by multiplexing them together. For other practical scenarios, for example, in a video conferencing system, the encoded audio data and the encoded video data are not multiplexed. The capture device 3102 delivers the encoded audio data and the encoded video data separately to the terminal device 3106 .

[0222] In the content supply system 3100, the terminal device 310 receives and plays the encoded data. The terminal device 3106 is a device having a data receiving and restoring function, and may be, for example, a smartphone or pad 3108, a computer or laptop 3110, a network video recorder (NVR) / digital video recorder (DVR) 3112, a TV 3114, a set-top box (STB) 3116, a video conferencing system 3118, a video surveillance system 3120, a personal digital assistant (PDA) 3122, an in-vehicle device 3124, or any combination thereof, and may be capable of decoding the encoded data as described above. For example, the terminal device 3106 may include the destination device 14 as described above. If the encoded data includes video, the video decoder 30 included in the terminal device prioritizes performing video decoding. If the encoded data includes audio, the audio decoder included in the terminal device prioritizes performing audio decoding processing.

[0223] For a terminal device having its display, such as a smartphone or pad 3108, a computer or laptop 3110, a network video recorder (NVR) / digital video recorder (DVR) 3112, a TV 3114, a personal digital assistant (PDA) 3122, or an in-vehicle device 3124, the terminal device can provide the decoded data to its display. For terminal devices not equipped with a display, such as an STB 3116, a video conferencing system 3118, or a video surveillance system 3120, an external display 3126 is contacted internally to receive and show the decoded data.

[0224] When each device in the system performs encoding or decoding, it can use an image encoding device or an image decoding device as shown in the above embodiments.

[0225] FIG. 9 is a diagram showing an example of the structure of the terminal device 3106. After the terminal device 3106 receives the stream from the capture device 3102, the protocol processing unit 3202 analyzes the transmission protocol of the stream. The protocol includes, but is not limited to, Real Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP), Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), HTTP Live Streaming Protocol (HLS), MPEG-DASH, Real Time Transport Protocol (RTP), Real Time Messaging Protocol (RTMP), or any kind of combination thereof. After the protocol processing unit 3202 processes the stream, a stream file is generated. The file is output to the demultiplexing unit 3204. The demultiplexing unit 3204 can separate the multiplexed data into encoded audio data and encoded video data. As mentioned above, for some practical scenarios, for example, in a video conference system, the encoded audio data and the encoded video data are not multiplexed. In this situation, the encoded data is sent to the video decoder 3206 and the audio decoder 3208 without passing through the demultiplexing unit 3204.

[0226] This demultiplexing process generates a video elementary stream (ES), an audio ES, and optionally a subtitle. As described in the above embodiment, the video decoder 3206 including the video decoder 30 decodes the video ES to generate video frames by the decoding method as shown in the above embodiment, and supplies this data to the synchronization unit 3212. The audio decoder 3208 decodes the audio ES to generate audio frames, and supplies this data to the synchronization unit 3212. Alternatively, the video frames may be stored in a buffer (not shown in FIG. 9) before supplying them to the synchronization unit 3212. Similarly, the audio frames may be stored in a buffer (not shown in FIG. 9) before supplying them to the synchronization unit 3212.

[0227] The synchronization unit 3212 synchronizes the video and audio frames and provides the video / audio to a video / audio display 3214. For example, the synchronization unit 3212 synchronizes the presentation of video and audio information, which may be encoded in the syntax with timestamps for the presentation of the encoded audio and visual data and for the delivery of the data stream itself.

[0228] If the stream contains subtitles, the subtitle decoder 3210 decodes the subtitles, synchronizes it with the video and audio frames, and provides the video / audio / subtitles to the video / audio / subtitle display 3216.

[0229] According to the above description, a method for decoding a video bitstream and a method for encoding a video bitstream are provided herein. Correspondingly, an apparatus for decoding a (encoded) video bitstream and an apparatus for decoding a video bitstream are provided herein.

[0230] FIG. 10 shows a method of decoding a video bitstream implemented by a decoding device, the bitstream including a current sequence parameter set (SPS) including syntax elements to be applied to the video sequence, the method including: obtaining 1010 (a value of) a first syntax element (e.g., sps_max_sublayers_minus1) used to determine a maximum number of temporal sublayers allowed to be present in each coded layered video sequence (CLVS) that references the current SPS, where the value of the first syntax element ranges from 0 to a first value, the first value being the value of a second syntax element (e.g., vps_max_sublayers_minus1) used to determine the maximum number of temporal sublayers allowed to be present in a layer in each coded video sequence (CVS) that references a video parameter set (VPS) when a second syntax element is referenced by the SPS; and decoding 1020 the bitstream based on the value of the first syntax element.

[0231] It should be noted that the bit stream may be obtained by a wireless or wired network. The bit stream may be transmitted from a website, a server, or other remote source using coaxial cable, fiber optic cable, twisted pair, digital subscriber line (DSL), or wireless technologies such as infrared, radio, microwave, WIFI, Bluetooth, LTE, or 5G. The bit stream may be a sequence of bits forming a representation of a sequence of access units (AUs) forming one or more coded video sequences (CVSs) in the form of a network abstraction layer (NAL) unit stream or byte stream.

[0232] In a specific example, a bitstream format specifies the relationship between Network Abstraction Layer (NAL) unit streams and byte streams, either of which is referred to as a bitstream.

[0233] The bitstream format can be one of two formats: NAL unit stream format or byte stream format. The NAL unit stream format is conceptually the more "basic" type. It consists of a sequence of syntax structures called NAL units. This sequence is in decoding order. Constraints are imposed on the decoding order (and content) of the NAL units in a NAL unit stream.

[0234] A byte stream format can be constructed from the NAL unit stream format by arranging the NAL units in decoding order and prefixing each NAL unit with a start code prefix and zero or more zero-valued bytes to form a stream of bytes. The NAL unit stream format can be extracted from the byte stream format by searching for the location of the unique start code prefix pattern in this stream of bytes.

[0235] FIG. 11 shows a method of encoding a video bitstream implemented by an encoding device, the bitstream including a current sequence parameter set (SPS) including syntax elements to be applied to the video sequence, the method including a step 1110 of determining whether a second syntax element is referenced by the SPS, where the second syntax element (e.g., vps_max_sublayers_minus1) is used to determine a maximum number of temporal sublayers allowed to be present in a layer in each coded video sequence (CVS) that references the video parameter set (VPS); a step 1120 of determining a value of a first syntax element used to determine the maximum number of temporal sublayers allowed to be present in each coded layered video sequence (CLVS) that references the current SPS based on a range of the first syntax element, where the range is from 0 to a first value, the first value being the value of the second syntax element if it is determined that the second syntax element is referenced by the SPS; and a step 1130 of encoding the value of the first syntax element into the bitstream.

[0236] The above mentioned methods can be implemented in a video decoding device or a video encoding device (to generate a bitstream), respectively, as described below.

[0237] As shown in Fig. 12, a video decoding apparatus 1200 according to an embodiment provided herein includes an acquisition unit 1210 and a decoding unit 1220. [0239] Here, the obtaining unit 1210 may be the entropy decoding unit 304. The decoding unit 1220 may be composed of one or more units shown in FIG. 3 used for decoding the bitstream.

[0240] The determining unit 1310 included in the video encoding apparatus 1300 shown in FIG. 13 is configured to determine whether the second syntax element is referenced by the SPS, and the second syntax element (e.g. vps_max_sublayers_minus1) is used to determine the maximum number of temporal sublayers allowed to exist in a layer in each coded video sequence (CVS) that references the video parameter set (VPS), and determine a value of a first syntax element used to determine the maximum number of temporal sublayers allowed to exist in each coded layered video sequence (CLVS) that references the current SPS based on a range of the first syntax element, the range being from 0 to a first value, and the first value being the value of the second syntax element when it is determined that the second syntax element is referenced by the SPS. The encoding unit 1320 included in the video encoding apparatus 1300 shown in FIG. 13 is configured to encode the value of the first syntax element into a bitstream.

[0241] Here, the encoding unit 1320 may be the entropy encoding unit 270. The determining unit 1220 may be composed of one or more units shown in FIG.

[0242] The video decoding device 1200 shown in FIG. 12 may be or may be configured with the decoder 30 shown in FIG. 1A, FIG. 1B, and FIG. 3, or the video decoder 3206 shown in FIG. 9. The decoding device 1200 may also be configured with the video coding device 400 shown in FIG. 4, the device 500 shown in FIG. 5, and the terminal device 3106 shown in FIG. 8. The encoding device 1300 shown in FIG. 13 may be or may include the encoder 20 shown in FIG. 1A, FIG. 1B, and FIG. 3. The encoding device 1200 may also be configured with the video coding device 400 shown in FIG. 4, the device 500 shown in FIG. 5, and the capture device 3102 shown in FIG. 8.

[0243] The present invention is not limited to the above-mentioned system, and either the image encoding device or the image decoding device in the above-mentioned embodiments may be incorporated into other systems, for example, an automobile system.

[0266] When a relational operator is applied to a syntax element or variable that has been assigned the value "na" (not applicable), the value "na" is treated as the distinct value of that syntax element or variable. The value "na" is considered unequal to any other value.

[0267] [Bitwise Operators] The following bitwise operators are defined as follows: & : Bitwise "and". When operating on integer arguments, it operates on the two's complement representation of the integer values. When operating on a binary term that contains fewer bits than another term, the shorter term is extended by adding its more significant bits that are equal to zero. | : Bitwise "or". When operating on integer arguments, it operates on the two's complement representation of the integer values. When operating on a binary term that contains fewer bits than another term, the shorter term is extended by adding its more significant bits equal to 0. ^: Bitwise "exclusive or". When operating on integer arguments, it operates on the two's complement representation of the integer values. When operating on a binary with fewer bits than another term, the shorter term is extended by adding higher bits equal to 0. x >> y y: Arithmetic right shift of the two's complement integer representation of x, where y is a binary number only. This function is defined only for non-negative integer values of y. The bit shifted into the most significant bit (MSB) as a result of the right shift has a value equal to the MSB of x before the shift operation. x << y y: Arithmetic left shift of the two's complement integer representation of x, where y is a binary number only. This function is defined only for non-negative integer values of y. The bit shifted into the least significant bit (LSB) as a result of the left shift has a value equal to 0.

[0268] [Assignment Operators] The following arithmetic operators are defined as follows. = Assignment operator ++ Increment, i.e., x++ is equivalent to x = x + 1. When used as an array index, it takes the value of the variable before the increment operation. -- Decrement, i.e., x-- is equivalent to x = x - 1. When used as an array index, it takes the value of the variable before the decrement operation. += Increment by the specified amount, i.e., x += 3 is equivalent to x = x + 3, and x += (-3) is equivalent to x = x + (-3). -= Decrement by the specified amount, i.e., x -= 3 is equivalent to x = x - 3, and x -= (-3) is equivalent to x = x - (-3).

[0269] [Range Notation] The following notations are used to specify a range of values. x = y..z x takes integer values in the range from y to z, inclusive, where x, y, and z are integers and z is greater than y.

[0271] [Order of operation precedence] When the order of precedence of an expression is not explicitly indicated using parentheses, the following rules apply: -An operation with higher precedence is evaluated before any operation with lower precedence. -Operations of equal precedence are evaluated sequentially from left to right. The following table specifies the precedence of operations from highest to lowest. A higher position in the table indicates a higher precedence. For operators that are also used in the C programming language, the order of precedence used herein is the same as that used in the C programming language. Table: Precedence of operations from highest (top of table) to lowest (bottom of table) [Table 12]
