[0029] 1 is a simplified schematic diagram of a non-combustion aerosol delivery device 100. The non-combustion aerosol delivery device 100 comprises a housing 101 that houses various components of the non-combustion aerosol delivery device 100. The non-combustion aerosol delivery device 100 comprises a chamber 102 configured to receive a consumable (C) that includes an aerosol generating material.

[0030] An aerosol-generating material is a material capable of generating an aerosol when activated, for example, by heating, irradiation, or in any other manner. The aerosol-generating material may be, for example, in the form of a solid, liquid, or gel, and may or may not contain actives and / or flavorings. In some embodiments, the aerosolizable material may include an "amorphous solid," which may alternatively be referred to as a "monolithic solid" (i.e., non-fibrous). In some embodiments, the amorphous solid may be a dry gel. An amorphous solid is a solid material that can hold some fluid within it, such as a liquid. In some embodiments, the aerosol-generating material may include, for example, about 50%, 60%, or 70% by weight of an amorphous solid to about 90%, 95%, or 100% by weight of an amorphous solid.

[0031] The aerosol-generating materials may include one or more active agents and / or flavorings, one or more aerosol-forming materials, and optionally one or more other functional materials.

[0032] The active substance may be a physiologically active material, which is a material intended to achieve or enhance a physiological response. The active substance may be selected from, for example, dietary supplements, nootropics, psychoactive substances. The active substance may be naturally derived or synthetically obtained. The active substance may include, for example, nicotine, caffeine, taurine, theine, vitamins such as B6 or B12 or C, melatonin, cannabinoids, or components, derivatives, or combinations thereof. The active substance may include one or more components, derivatives, or extracts of tobacco, cannabis, or another botanical substance.

[0033] In some embodiments, the active agent comprises nicotine, hi some embodiments, the active agent comprises caffeine, melatonin, or vitamin B12.

[0034] The aerosol forming material can include one or more components capable of forming an aerosol. In some embodiments, the aerosol forming material can include one or more of glycerol, propylene glycol, diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, tetraethylene glycol, 1,3-butylene glycol, erythritol, mesoerythritol, ethyl vanillate, ethyl laurate, diethyl suberate, triethyl citrate, triacetin, diacetin mixture, benzyl benzoate, benzyl phenylacetate, tributyrin, lauryl acetate, lauric acid, myristic acid, and propylene carbonate.

[0035] The one or more other functional ingredients may include one or more of a pH adjuster, a colorant, a preservative, a binder, a filler, a stabilizer, and / or an antioxidant.

[0036] Hereinafter, non-combustion aerosol delivery device 100 will be referred to as device 100. Device 100 includes an aerosol generator 104 for generating an aerosol from an aerosol-generating material in a consumable received in a chamber 102.

[0037] An aerosol generator is a device configured to cause an aerosol to be generated from an aerosol-generating material. In some embodiments, the or each aerosol generator is a heater configured to subject the aerosol-generating material to thermal energy to liberate one or more volatile substances from the aerosol-generating material to form an aerosol. In some embodiments, the or each aerosol generator is configured to cause an aerosol to be generated from the aerosol-generating material without heating. For example, the aerosol generator may be configured to subject the aerosol-generating material to one or more of vibration, increased pressure, or electrostatic energy.

[0038] Thus, in some examples, the aerosol generator 104 comprises a heating arrangement configured to provide energy to heat the aerosol-generating material in the consumable. In some examples, the heating arrangement comprises one or more resistive heating elements disposed in thermal contact with the chamber 102. Heat is generated by the flow of electrical current against the electrical resistance of the one or more resistive heating elements. This process is referred to as Joule heating, Ohmic heating, or resistive heating.

[0039] In some examples, the aerosol generator 104 is an inductive heating arrangement and is configured to generate a varying magnetic field to inductively heat the susceptor. The inductive heating arrangement can include one or more inductors through which an alternating current is passed to generate the varying magnetic field. In some examples, the aerosol generator 104 includes one or more susceptors. In other examples, the aerosol generator 104 may not include a susceptor, and instead, one or more susceptors may be provided as part of / with a consumable intended for use with the device 100.

[0040] The susceptor is a material that can be heated by the penetration of a varying magnetic field, such as an alternating magnetic field. The susceptor may be an electrically conductive material, such that the penetration of the varying magnetic field results in inductive heating of the heating material. The heating material may be a magnetic material, such that the penetration of the varying magnetic field results in magnetic hysteresis heating of the heating material. The susceptor may be both electrically conductive and magnetic, such that the susceptor can be heated by both heating mechanisms. A device configured to generate a varying magnetic field is referred to herein as a magnetic field generator.

[0041] The device 100 includes a power source 106. The power source 106 provides power to various components of the device 100. In some examples, the power source 106 is a battery. In some examples, the power source 106 includes a battery and a DC-DC converter, and power is provided from the battery through the DC-DC converter. The DC-DC converter can enable the power source 106 to provide power at a voltage different from that of the battery. In some examples, the device 100 can include a DC / AC converter to convert DC current, e.g., from a battery, to AC current, e.g., to provide power to one or more inductors of the heating component 104, where the heating component 104 is an induction heating component. In the following examples, the power source 106 is simply referred to as the battery 106.

[0042] 1, the device 100 includes control circuitry 108 configured to control various aspects of the operation of the device 100, including the aerosol generator 104. In this example, the control circuitry 108 is a control processor 108 in data communication with a computer-readable memory 110. The control circuitry 108 controls various operations of the device, for example, by executing instructions stored in the computer-readable memory 110. For example, the control circuitry 108 can control the delivery of power from the battery 106 to the aerosol generator 104 by controlling various electrical components, such as switches and the like (not shown in FIG. 1).

[0043] Device 100 further includes a user input device 112 electrically connected to control circuitry 108, which enables a user to operate device 100. Examples of suitable user input devices 109 include one or more buttons, a trackpad, and a touch screen, although any suitable device may be used.

[0044] In this example, device 100 also includes an opening 105 at one end of housing 101 that opens into an entrance 103 of chamber 102. A user can insert a consumable into chamber 102 through opening 105 such that a distal end of the consumable is received within chamber 102, while a proximal portion of the consumable protrudes from device 100.

[0045] A distal portion of the consumable received in chamber 102 includes an aerosol-generating material from which device 100 is configured to generate an aerosol. A proximal portion of the consumable protruding from opening 105 may include, for example, a filter, and a user may insert the proximal portion into their mouth to inhale the flow of aerosol when device 100 is being used.

[0046] In this example, the inlet 103 of the chamber 102 has an adjustable width and the chamber 102 has an adjustable axial length. To that end, the device 100 includes a mechanism 114 for configuring the chamber 102 in at least a first configuration and a second configuration. When the chamber 102 is in the first configuration, the inlet 103 has a first width and the chamber 102 has a first axial length, while when the chamber 102 is in the second configuration, the inlet 103 has a second width and the chamber 102 has a second axial length.

[0047] Thus, advantageously, device 100 is easily configurable for use with at least two different types of consumables of different sizes that provide a different user experience for the user.

[0048] It should be noted that in this specification, references to consumables of different sizes refer to consumables that are intended to be different sizes from one another, and not, for example, consumables that are intended to be the same size, but that differ in size by some small amount due, for example, to manufacturing tolerances.

[0049] In one example, the first axial length is longer than the second axial length and the first width is smaller than the second width, meaning that when the chamber 102 is in the first configuration, the device 100 is used with a first type of consumable that is longer and narrower than a second type of consumable that the device 100 is used with when the chamber 102 is in the second configuration.

[0050] It will be understood that device 100 may include other components not shown in Fig. 1, such as ventilation inlets / outlets, control interfaces, charging ports, etc. It should be noted that Fig. 1 is merely a schematic diagram illustrating several components that may be included in device 100. Fig. 1 is not intended to communicate the specific locations of the various components.

[0051] 2-7 show an example of device 100 with housing 101 in ghost form (i.e., housing 101 is falsely shown as being transparent) to reveal some of the internal components of device 100. For reasons of clarity, power supply 106, processor 108, or memory 110 are not shown in these figures.

[0052] The housing 101 comprises multiple panels including a front panel 226 at the proximal end of the device 100, a rear panel 228 at the distal end of the device, and a first side panel 101a and a second side panel 101b. The first and second side panels are "U" shaped in cross section and are connected together, e.g., as a "snap fit", to define the sides of the housing 101. The front panel 226 and bottom panel 228 are connected to the first and second side panels at opposite ends of the housing 101 and define the front and rear of the housing 101, respectively.

[0053] Typically, each of the plurality of panels comprises a plastic material or any other type of suitable material. Typically, each panel may be formed by injection molding.

[0054] The front panel 226 defines an opening 105 that communicates with the entrance 103 of the chamber 102. The front panel 226 has a slidable cover 211 that slides over the opening 105 so that the chamber 102 can be closed when the device 100 is not in use.

[0055] The chamber 102 is generally cylindrical in shape and extends parallel to the axial axis of the device 100 .

[0056] 2 and 4a show the device 100 when the chamber 102 is configured in a first configuration, and FIGS. 3 and 4b show the device 100 when the chamber 102 is configured in a second configuration.

[0057] In the first configuration, the chamber 101 has a first axial length L1 and the entrance 103 to the chamber has a first width D1. In the second configuration, the chamber 101 has a second axial length L2 (shorter than L1) and the entrance 103 to the chamber has a second width D2 (wider than D1).

[0058] The mechanism 114 for configuring the chamber 101 from a first configuration to a second configuration (and vice versa) comprises a movable, in this example rotatable, member 232, and a frame 234 with a base portion 234a, an elongated linking arm 234b and a curved linking arm 234c. In this example, the base portion 234a is ring-shaped.

[0059] The rotatable member 232 is rotatably mounted about the axis of a pair of collinear shafts 242 (only one of which is visible in the figures). In some examples, the shafts 242 are separate from the rotatable member 232 and are fixed inside the housing 101 below the opening 105 on one side of the rotatable member 232. Alternatively, in some examples, the shafts 242 are integrally formed with the rotatable member 232, again on one side of the rotatable member 232, e.g., rotatably fixed in respective sockets (not shown) inside the housing 101 below the opening 105. The collinear axes of the shafts 242 are substantially perpendicular to the axial axis of the chamber 102, as indicated by the arrows 234 and 238 in FIG. 6. In this example, the rotatable member 232 is generally cube-like in shape, but has rounded edges. The rotatable member 232 defines a first open-ended passageway P1 extending through the rotatable member 232 between a first pair of opposing faces of the rotatable member 232 and also defines a second open-ended passageway P2 extending through the rotatable member 232 between a second pair of opposing faces of the rotatable member 232. The rotatable member 232 is rotatably mounted to one of the shafts 242 at one 240 of the third pair of opposing faces of the rotatable member 232 and is rotatably mounted to the other of the shafts 242 (not visible in the figures) at the other of the third pair of opposing faces of the rotatable member 232 (not visible in the figures).

[0060] The first open-ended passage P1 and the second open-ended passage P2 are perpendicular to each other and to the axis of the shaft 242 and intersect each other at the rotatable member 232. The first open-ended passage P1 defines a first width D1 and the second passage P2 defines a second width D2.

[0061] When the chamber 101 is in the first configuration, the rotatable member 232 is rotated such that the first open-ended passage P1 is coaxial with the axial axis and the opening 105 of the chamber 102. Thus, when the chamber 101 is in this configuration, a first width D1 of the first open-ended passage P1 defines a first width of the entrance 103 of the chamber 102. When the chamber is in the second configuration, the rotatable member 232 is rotated such that the second open-ended passage P2 is coaxial with the axial axis and the opening 105 of the chamber 102. Thus, when the chamber 102 is in this configuration, a second width D2 of the second open-ended passage P2 defines a second width of the entrance 103 of the chamber 102.

[0062] The base portion 234a takes the form of an annular support ring disposed coaxially with the axial axis of the chamber 102. The base portion 234a is movable from a first base portion position, shown in Figure 2, when the chamber 102 is configured in a first configuration, to a second base portion position, shown in Figure 3, when the chamber 102 is configured in a second configuration.

[0063] An elongated linking arm 234b is connected at a first end to the base portion 234a and extends from the base portion 234a parallel to the axial axis of the chamber 102. As best shown in Figures 4a and 4b, a second end 234d of the elongated linking arm 234b defines an elongated slot 252 within which a first end 234e of a curved linking arm 234c is pivotally coupled. This coupling allows the elongated linking arm 234b to slide over the first end of the curved linking arm 234c a distance defined by the upper and lower ends of the slot 252. A second end 234f of the curved linking arm 234c is pivotally mounted to a face of the rotatable member 232 by a pivot 248.

[0064] When the base portion 234a is moved from the first base portion position shown in Figure 2 to the second base portion position shown in Figure 3, there is an initial period during which the rotatable member 232 remains stationary due to the elongated linking arm 234b sliding over the first end of the curved linking arm 234c in the slot 252 and no force is transmitted to the rotatable member 232. This is best shown in Figure 5a, where the base portion 234a is between the first base portion position and the second base portion position. When the movement of the base portion 234a and the elongated connecting arm 234b causes the lower end of the slot 252 to contact the curved connecting arm 234c, continued movement of the base portion 234a and the elongated connecting arm 234b (indicated by arrow 260 in FIG. 5b) then causes the curved connecting arm 234c to apply a rotational force (indicated by curved arrow 262 in FIG. 5b) to the rotatable member 232, causing the rotatable member 232 to rotate from the first rotatable member position to the second rotatable member position as the base portion 234a completes its movement to the second base portion position.

[0065] Similarly, when the base portion 234a is moved back from the second base portion position shown in Figure 3 to the first base portion position shown in Figure 2, there is an initial period during which the rotatable member 232 remains stationary as the elongated linking arm 234b slides over the first end of the curved linking arm 234c until the upper end of the slot 252 abuts the curved linking arm 234c. This is best shown in Figure 6a. Continued movement of the base portion 234a and the elongated linking arm 234b (indicated by arrow 264 in Figure 6b) then causes the curved linking arm 234c to exert a rotational force (indicated by curved arrow 266 in Figure 6b) on the rotatable member 232, which rotates from the second rotatable member position to the first rotatable member position as the base portion 234a completes its movement to the first base portion position.

[0066] It will be appreciated that in this example, the rotatable member 232 rotates about an axis of rotation that is substantially perpendicular to the axial axis of the chamber 102. Furthermore, the axis of rotation is substantially perpendicular to (and therefore not aligned with) each of the first and second open-ended passages P1 and P2, whether the rotatable member 232 is in the first or second member position.

[0067] The device 100 further includes a second opening 268 formed through the rear panel 228 to provide access to a lower interior chamber 270 at the rear of and coaxial with the chamber 102. The device 100 includes a door 256 hinged on the rear panel 228 for opening and closing the opening. The lower interior chamber 270 has a variable interior size.

[0068] In this example, to configure the chamber 102 from the first configuration to the second configuration, a user can insert the first member 254 into the lower interior chamber 270 so that it engages the base portion 234a and then push the base portion 234a from the first base portion position to the second base portion position. The first member 254 is shaped such that when the chamber 102 is in the second configuration and the door 256 is closed, the first member 254 fits snugly within the lower interior chamber 270 between the base portion 234a and the door 256.

[0069] In some examples, the base portion 234a is biased toward the position of the first base portion 234a. To configure the chamber 102 from the second configuration to the first configuration, the user removes the first member 254 from the interior chamber 270, and the biased base portion 234a returns to the position of the first base portion 234a.

[0070] When the chamber 102 is to be used in the first configuration, a user can insert the second member 260 into the lower interior chamber 270 so that it rests on the first base portion 234a. The second elongated member 260 is shaped such that when the heating chamber 102 is in the first configuration and the door 256 is closed, the second elongated member 260 fits snugly within the lower interior chamber 270 between the base portion 234a and the door 256. This is best seen in FIG.

[0071] The first member 254 can include a type of material typically used in filters for consumables, for example, a fibrous material such as cellulose acetate. When the first member 254 is in the lower interior chamber 270 and the device 100 is in use, the first member 254 can adsorb or otherwise collect aggregates in the lower interior chamber 270. Similarly, the second member 260 can also include a type of material typically used in filters and can act as a collector for aggregates when located in the lower interior chamber 270.

[0072] In some examples, the chamber 102 is accessible for cleaning through a second opening 268 formed through the rear panel 228, the lower interior chamber 270, and the annular base of the part 234a. Additionally, in some examples, there are one or more holes (not shown) in or around the door 256 for the inlet of air during use when a user utilizes a consumable received in the chamber 102. This air flows through the annular base part 234a and into the axially central portion of the consumable.

[0073] In the example described above, the larger second passage is configured to be used when the chamber 102 is at its shortest. However, it will be understood that this configuration may be different in alternative embodiments, i.e., the second passage is used when the chamber 102 is at its longest. Furthermore, other methods of moving the elongated linking arm 234b and rotating the rotatable member 232 may be devised. For example, the base portion 234a may be moved by a screw thread or with a lever. The rotatable member 232 may also be rotated without a mechanism to shorten the length of the heating chamber 102, thus achieving a device that can accommodate two consumables of different diameters with the same length. This may be achieved in a number of ways, for example, by rotating a twist knob on the side of the device.

[0074] The above-described embodiments are to be understood as illustrative examples of the present invention. Further embodiments of the present invention are envisioned. It is to be understood that any feature described in connection with any one embodiment may be used alone or in combination with other features described, and may also be used in combination with one or more features of any other embodiment, or any combination of any other embodiment. Moreover, equivalents and modifications not described above may also be used without departing from the scope of the present invention, which is defined in the appended claims.
