The accessory fasteners include a fastening portion and a head. The head may be disposed inside the accessory channel, and the fastening portion may extend upwardly from the accessory channel for removably securing one or more accessories. The cap component may be manufactured and / or assembled separately from the truck bed assembly or may be installed after initial assembly of the vehicle.
[0011] 1 and 2, perspective views of a vehicle 10 including a truck bed 20 are shown. The vehicle 10 may include a tailgate 7, one or more taillights 9, and a bumper 11. The vehicle 10 may also include a cap component 12 that covers the top of a truck bed sidewall 13 of the vehicle 10. The truck bed sidewall 13 may include a fender 22 and a wheel well 23. The truck bed sidewall 13 may also include an outer sidewall 14, an inner sidewall 16, and a rear sidewall 18. While the truck bed sidewall 13 shown is on the left side of the vehicle 10 when looking longitudinally forward of the vehicle, the truck bed sidewall 13 may be substantially mirrored on the right side of the vehicle 10 across the vehicle centerline such that the vehicle 10 includes two opposing, substantially identical sidewalls, as well as cap components, adapter components, accessory channels, and related features described below.
[0012] 3 and 4, vehicle 10 includes a cap component 100. Cap component 100 includes a cap 101 including a recess 103 and an adapter component 102 with a fitment channel 104 for one or more fitment fasteners 106 within recess 103. Cap 101 may be attached to a truck bed sidewall 13 to allow for the removably attachment of one or more truck bed fitments. Cap 101 may be a molded bed cap or may be retained to truck bed sidewall 13 using one or more retaining clips or other suitable mechanisms. In some embodiments, cap 101 may be fabricated from any suitable material, such as polyethylene or other plastic, aluminum, steel, and / or the like. To ensure that the use of the fitment channel 104 does not unnecessarily interfere with other traditional uses of the cap 101, the fitment channel 104 may fit inside the recess 103 so that the fitment channel 104 is raised (low profile), flat, or slightly flat relative to the top surface 107 of the cap 101.
[0013] The adapter part(s) 102 and the fitment channel 104 may be elongated structures extending longitudinally of the vehicle, substantially the length of the truck bed sidewall 13 or one or more portions thereof. The adapter part(s) 102 and the fitment channel 104 may be fabricated from any suitable material, such as, for example, aluminum, steel, plastic, etc. The adapter part(s) 102 and the fitment channel 104 may be fabricated by any suitable process, such as, for example, the fitment channel 104 may be formed by roll forming, molding, extrusion, assembly, or casting. The fitment channel 104 may extend substantially the entire length of the adapter part 102 or a portion thereof.
[0014] The adapter piece 102 is shown as an elongated slot that extends continuously and substantially the entire length of the truck bed side wall 13. However, it is contemplated that the adapter piece 102 may have any length and include several portions suitable for attaching truck bed accessories to the truck bed side wall 13. For example, in a truck bed that includes a fender or other structure that extends along the truck bed side wall 13, it may be advantageous to have two or more separate portions of the adapter piece 102 on either side of the fender. Additionally, on vehicles with extended truck beds, it may be advantageous to have multiple separate portions of the adapter piece 102.
[0015] One or more furniture fasteners 106 may be inserted into the furniture channel 104 for attaching external furniture such as cargo hook and loops, crossbars, and other cargo management components, and may include a fastener portion 108 and a head 110. The head 110 may be slidably positioned inside the furniture channel 104, and the fastener portion 108 may extend upwardly outside the furniture channel 104 and provide a connection location for one or more furniture items. In some embodiments, the one or more furniture fasteners 106 may comprise an upside-down bolt, although embodiments are not limited thereto.
[0016] Each fitment channel 104 may include a base wall 116 that defines the length of the fitment channel 104 and opposing side walls 112 that define the depth of the fitment channel 104 and extend from the base wall 116 toward the top wall 114. The top wall 114, or a portion thereof, may include a retention flange 115 extending from the side wall 112 to define a slot 118. The side wall 112 may be parallel to the other side wall and perpendicular to the base wall 116. The retention flange 115 may be perpendicular to the side wall 112. The retention flange 115 may extend from the side wall 112 along the entire length of the fitment channel 104 or only a portion thereof. The side wall 112, slot 118, and head 110 may be sized such that the head 110 is slidably retained by the retention flange 115 in the fitment channel 104.
[0017] 3, fitment channel 104 may include discontinuities 105. In some embodiments, fitment channel 104 may include one or more discontinuities similar to discontinuities 105. Discontinuities 105 may be a portion of fitment channel 104 that is wider than other portions where slots 118 allow for insertion of one or more fitment fasteners 106. In some embodiments, the width of discontinuities 105 extends only within retention flange 115, although it is contemplated that the width of the discontinuities may extend within opposing sidewalls 112.
[0018] 3 and 4, one or more fitment fasteners 106 may be attached to the fitment channel 104 at the discontinuous portion 105. For example, the head 110 may be sized to be inserted into the discontinuous portion 105 of the fitment channel 104, but is too large to be removed from the fitment channel 104 at other locations along the entire length of the fitment channel 104. In this manner, when the fitment fastener 106 is positioned along the fitment channel 104, it cannot be removed without sliding it back into the discontinuous portion 105. The fitment channel 104 may include one or more interlocks at the discontinuous portion 105 to prevent uncontrolled removal of the one or more fitment fasteners 106 from the discontinuous portion 105 of the fitment channel 104.
[0019] 4, the inner wall 16 may include an inner wall top flange 17, and the outer wall 14 may include an outer wall top flange 19. The inner wall top flange 17 and the outer wall top flange 19 may be substantially flat, parallel surfaces extending longitudinally along the entire length of the truck bed side wall 13 and providing a surface for connecting the cap component 100 using one or more fitment fasteners 106.
[0020] 4 and 5 , the adapter piece 102 may be permanently coupled to the truck bed sidewall 13 using one or more fitment fasteners 106. The one or more adapter fasteners 120 may be welded studs or other suitable fasteners, but embodiments are not limited thereto. It is contemplated that the fitment channel 104 may be coupled to the truck bed sidewall 13 using countersunk or low-profile bolts, adhesives, overmolded plastic, mechanical clips, or other suitable mechanisms. Each adapter fastener 120 may include an adapter fastener head 122 and an adapter fastener fastener anchorage portion 124 that may extend through the foundation wall 116 within the truck bed sidewall 13, and each adapter fastener 120 may be secured to the truck bed sidewall 13 using a retention nut 126. Each adapter fastener 120 may extend at one or more connection locations 128 within the truck bed sidewall 13. In some embodiments, the fitment channel 104 may be coupled to the truck bed sidewall 13 at one or more retention slots in an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) molded bed cap in the truck bed sidewall 13 (i.e., the slots are created on the factory floor when the vehicle 10 is first manufactured or shortly thereafter). However, in some embodiments, it may be necessary to create new coupling locations 128, such as retention holes, within one or more portions of the truck bed sidewall 13.
[0021] 6-8 illustrate an embodiment of a cap component 100 including an adapter fastener head 122 with a flat upper surface relative to the base wall 116 of the fitment channel 104. The base wall 116 may include one or more bolt holes countersunk therein to provide clearance for the adapter fastener head 122 forming one or more countersinks. The adapter fastener head 122 may have a flat profile. In some embodiments, the adapter fastener head 122 may be formed to be raised (low profile), flat, or nearly flat relative to the base wall 116 of the fitment channel 104. The flat or nearly flat profile allows the head 110 of one or more fitment fasteners 106 (not shown for ease of illustration) to slide unobstructed along the entire longitudinal dimension of the fitment channel 104. In such embodiments, one or more fitment fasteners 106 may be able to slide the entire length of fitment channel 104, thereby allowing for only one discontinuity along the entire length of adapter part 102. As shown in Figures 7 and 8, cap part 100 in some embodiments includes one or more collar flanges 117 that extend outwardly from top wall 114 by projecting above a portion of top surface 107 of cap 101.
[0022] 9 and 10, an example embodiment of an adapter part 102 is shown that includes a discontinuity 105 as the only discontinuity in the trim channel 104 at the forward end of the adapter part 102. In such an embodiment, heads 110 (see FIG. 4) of trim fasteners 106 (see FIG. 4) are inserted into the trim channel 104 at the discontinuity 105, and the one or more trim fasteners 106 are then slidably positioned in the appropriate positions inside the trim channel 104 for attaching one or more trim items.
