Background Art
[0003] Bed assemblies using adjustable bases are becoming increasingly popular as an alternative to conventional bed assemblies. Unlike conventional bed assemblies that use a hard box spring or other similar base, bed assemblies using adjustable bases can be easily adjusted by articulating the base to a position that is ergonomically desirable. In other words, by articulating the adjustable base, a user can easily change the position of the mattress lying on the adjustable base, and as a result, quickly adjust the position of the mattress to a particular preference, and at least partially individualize the level of comfort of sleep.
[0004] Despite the easily adjustable nature of such bed assemblies, the use of adjustable bases frequently makes it difficult to manipulate the mattress lying on top of the base. More specifically, in bed assemblies using adjustable bases, the adjustable bases often include a retainer bar rigidly fixed to the foot of the base, which firmly holds the mattress in place on the base and prevents the mattress from sliding off the base when connected. However, in the use of such rigid retainer bars, the retainer bars also act to prevent the mattress from being easily manipulated, such as when it may be necessary to rotate the mattress or change the sheets covering it. [0034] First, referring in general to Figures 1 to 6, an exemplary embodiment of the present invention provides an adjustable base assembly including a mattress 20 having a lower surface 22 (see Figure 1) and an adjustable base 30 having an upper surface 32 (see Figure 2), so that when the mattress 20 is placed on the adjustable base 30, the lower surface 22 of the mattress 20 is placed on and in contact with the upper surface 32 of the adjustable base 30. The mattress 20 is generally made of a flexible foam and may include, but is not limited to, latex foam, mesh or non-mesh viscoelastic foam (sometimes called memory foam or low-rebound foam), mesh or non-mesh non-viscoelastic foam, high-rebound polyurethane foam, or expanded polymer foam (e.g., expanded ethylene vinyl acetate, polypropylene, polystyrene, or polyethylene). In the exemplary embodiments shown in Figures 1 to 6, for example, the mattress is made of a viscoelastic foam that is low-rebound but has sufficient hardness and density so that pressure is evenly distributed throughout the mattress 20.
