Abstract

To provide compositions of hydrophilic biomaterials that can form several layers on fiber-based materials so that the layers can act synergistically to improve both oil and water barrier capacity of the material with its applied layers.SOLUTION: There is provided an aqueous polyelectrolyte (PEC) composition for application to a fiber-based material for the use of obtaining a barrier coating resistant to oil and water, wherein the composition comprises: (a) from 0.1 to 20% (w / w) of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and from 0.1 to 20% of cationic starch (CS); (b) from 1 to 20% (w / w) of a plasticizer; and (c) from 1 to 15% (w / w) of a pH adjusting agent selected from an acid, a buffering system and a base, and the composition has charge ratio that is equal to or less than 1.SELECTED DRAWING: None
