[0001] This application claims priority benefit of Provisional Application No. 63 / 691,646 (Docket No. 010222-24030A) filed on Sep. 6, 2024, which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety.FIELD
[0002] The present disclosure relates generally to the field of toilets. More specifically, the present disclosure relates to improved hinge assemblies for toilets.BACKGROUND
[0003] Generally, toilets include a hinge assembly configured to rotatably couple a toilet seat and / or toilet seat cover to the base or pedestal of a toilet. The hinge assembly may be comprised of plastic and include a hinge plate coupled to the base or pedestal of the toilet. Various forces may be applied to the hinge plate during use of the hinge assembly and / or a toilet seat coupled to the base or pedestal via the hinge assembly. Over time, the various forces applied to the hinge plate may result in fatigue and ultimately failure (e.g., deformation, fracture) of the hinge plate. Additionally, various chemicals included in products used to clean or disinfect surfaces of the toilet may dissolve portions of the hinge plate over time, further weakening the hinge plate. Accordingly, there is a need for more durable hinge assemblies having longer service lives.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

According to some examples, each of a pair of dampers 430 may be inserted (e.g., through the opening 412) into the channel 411 of the housing 410. Specifically, the pair of dampers 430 may be inserted into the channel 411, such that one of the pair of dampers 430 is disposed at each end of the channel 411. According to some examples, each end of the channel 411 may include a retaining feature configured to prevent the body of a respective one of the pair of dampers 430 from sliding out (e.g., of a respective end) of the channel 411. Each of the dampers 430 may be inserted into the channel 411 such that a hinge pin 432 extending from the body 431 extends outside of the channel 411 though an opening disposed at a respective end of the channel 411. The hinge pin 432 of each of the pair of dampers 430 may be configured to rotate relative to the body 431 of the damper 430 from which the hinge pin 432 extends. The hinge pin 432 of each of the dampers 430 may be configured to engage a toilet seat (e.g., 310) and / or seat cover (e.g., 320), coupling the toilet seat and / or seat cover 320 to the hinge assembly 400. Specifically, the toilet seat and / or seat cover 320 may be rotatably covered to the hinge assembly 400, and thus a base or pedestal (e.g., 110, 210) of a toilet (e.g., 100, 200) by the dampers 430. For example, a toilet seat and / or seat cover may include a pair of openings, each opening corresponding in shape to the hinge pins 432 and configured to receive one of the hinge pins 432 for coupling the seat and / or seat cover, respectively to the damper 430. The hinge pins 432 may have a non-cylindrical shape, such that the hinge pins 432 may rotate relative to the damper body 431 with the seat and / or seat cover.
[0038] According to some examples, the pair of receivers 440 may be inserted (e.g., through the opening 412) into the channel 411 of the housing 410. In some examples, the pair of receivers 440 may be inserted into the channel 411 after the pair of dampers 430, such that each one of the pair of receivers 440 abuts a damper 430 disposed on an opposite side of the channel 411. Each of the receivers 440 may include a receptacle 441 configured to receive a post 520 of the hinge plate 500. According to some examples, the housing 410 may include one or more grooves 414 extending along a length of the channel 411 and the receiver 440 may include one or more protrusions or ridges 442 extending from body of the receiver 440. The one or more grooves along the channel 411 and the one or more protrusions may control a position of the received 440 relative to the housing 410 when the receiver 440 is disposed within the channel 411, such that a receptacle 441 disposed in the receiver 440 and a post hole 413 of extending through the channel 411 are aligned and a post 520 of the hinge plate 500 may be inserted into through the post hole 413 into the receptacle 441 of the receiver 440.
[0039] The receptacle 441 in each of the receivers 440 may be configured to engage a post 520 extending from the hinge plate 500. Specifically, the receiver 440 and the hinge post 520 may be coupled to one another, coupling the hinge plate 500 and the housing 410 of the hinge assembly 400. According to some examples, as described hereinafter in greater detail herein after, a post 520 extending from the hinge plate 500 and a receptacle 441 of the receiver 440 may have an interference fit connection.
[0040] Still referring to FIGS. 6 and 7, according to some examples, the locking insert 450 may be inserted (e.g., through the opening 412) into the channel 411 of the housing 410. For example, the locking insert 450 may be inserted into the channel 411 after the dampers 430 and the receivers 440 are inserted into the channel 411. According to some examples, the locking insert 450 may be inserted into the channel 411 and coupled to the housing 410 so as to block the opening 412 of the channel 411. Specifically, the locking insert 450 may block the opening 412 of the channel 411 such that the dampers 430 and the receivers 440 are maintained captive within the channel 411 of the housing 410. According to some examples, the locking insert may include a tab or protrusion 451 configured to engage an inner surface of the channel 411 and maintain a position of the locking insert 450 within the channel 411.
[0041] As described above, the housing 410 and the hinge plate 500 may be coupled to one another. According to some examples, as shown in FIG. 6, the housing 410 may have an open bottom 416, such that the housing 410 may be placed over (e.g., on top of) the hinge plate 500. According to some examples, as shown in FIG. 5, the plate cover 540 may include a skirt or flange 541 disposed around a bottom edge or perimeter of the plate cover 540. According to some examples, as shown in FIG. 6, a mouth or lip 417 disposed around the open bottom 416 may be configured to engage (e.g., abut) the flange 541 of the plate cover 540 when the housing 410 is coupled to the plate cover 540. For example, the lip 417 may cover the flange 514 of the plate cover 540 and engage (e.g., abut) the flange 514 coupling the housing 410 and the plate cover 540 to one another.
[0042] Referring to FIG. 8, an exploded view of the hinge plate 500 is illustrated in accordance with one example of the present disclosure. As shown in FIG. 8, the hinge plate 500 may include at least one mounting bracket 510 and a plate cover 540. According to some examples, as shown in FIG. 8, the hinge plate 500 may include two mounting plates 510. According to other examples, as described hereinafter with respect to FIG. 10, a single mounting bracket may be included.
[0043] As shown in FIG. 8, the mounting plate 510 may include a plate 511 including a mounting hole 512 extending therethrough. According to some examples of the present disclosure, the plate 511 may be comprised of a metal or a metal alloy. For example, the plate 511 may be comprised of stainless steel. The mounting hole 512 may be configured to receive a fastener for coupling the hinge plate 500 to a base or pedestal (e.g., 110, 210) of a toilet (e.g., 100, 200). For example, the mounting hole 512 may be configured to receive a fastener which extends through the mounting hole 512 into a top mount anchor disposed within a base or pedestal of the toilet.
[0044] As noted above, a mounting plate 510 comprised of a metal or metal alloy allows for a reduced thickness of the mounting plate 510 and improved strength (e.g., as compared to mounting plates comprised of other materials, for example, plastics). Accordingly, a mounting plate 510 as described herein may increase the strength of a hinge assembly while reducing an overall height of a hinge assembly (e.g., 400).
[0045] As shown in FIG. 8, according to some examples, the mounting hole 512 may have an oblong or elongate shape. According to some examples, the one or more mounting plates 510 may each include a plate 511 having a mounting hole 512 having an elongate shape, such that a position in which the hinge plate 500 is coupled to the base or pedestal (e.g., 110, 210) of a toilet may be varied. Specifically, a position of the hinge plate 500 relative to the base or pedestal of a toilet may be varied by varying a position of an anchor or hole in the base or pedestal along the oblong or elongate mounting hole 512. When the hinge plate 500 is in a desired position relative to the base or pedestal of the toilet, a fastener may be inserted into the anchor or hole disposed in the base or pedestal of the toilet, coupling the hinge plate 500 to the base or pedestal. According to some examples, including one or more mounting plates 510 comprised of metal or a metal alloy, advantageously allows variably mounting of the hinge plate 500 to the base or pedestal of a toilet. For example, the at least one mounting plate 511 may have improved shear strength, such that the mounting plate 511 will not fatigue even when the area of an overlap between a fastener used to couple the hinge plate 510 to a base or pedestal of the toilet and the mounting plate 511, and thus a shear area of the fastener and mounting plate 511, is reduced.
[0046] According to some examples, as shown in FIG. 8, the mounting plate 511 may include a body 513, a vertical portion 514 extending from the body 513, and an elevated flange 515 extend from the vertical portion 514. The vertical portion 514 may be disposed and extend between the body 513 and the elevated flange 515. The body 513 may have a cuboid shape including a mounting hole 512 extending therethrough. The vertical portion 514 may extend from (e.g., upward from a top surface of) the body 513 along a side of the body 513. The elevated flange 515 may extend outward (e.g., away from the body 513) from the vertical portion 514 of the mounting plate 511. According to some examples, as shown in FIG. 8, an elevated flange 515 may be disposed along a side of the body 513. The elevated flange 515 may be offset from the body 513 so as to be disposed above (e.g., entirely above) the body 513 of the mounting plate 511. According to some examples, the body 513 and the elevated flange 515 may have the same thickness. According to other examples, the body 513 may have another shape.
[0047] According to some examples, as shown in FIG. 8, a mounting plate 511 may include a pair of vertical portions 514 and a pair of elevated flanges 515. For example, as shown in FIG. 8, a mounting plate 511 may include vertical portions 514 extending from the body 513 along opposite sides of the body 513. As shown in FIG. 8, the mounting plate 511 may include an elevated flange 515 extending outward (e.g., away from the body 513) from each of the vertical portion 514 extending from opposite sides of the body 513. According to some examples, as shown in FIG. 8, one of the pair of elevated flanges 515 may extend toward a center of the hinge plate 510.
[0048] According to the present disclosure, the one or more vertical portions 514 and / or one or more elevated flanges 515 included in the mounting plate 511, as shown in FIG. 8 may increase the rigidity and thus increase a strength of the mounting plate 511.
[0049] As shown in FIG. 8, the mounting plate 510 may further include a post extending from the plate 510. The post 510 may be comprised of a metal or metal alloy. For example, the post 510 may be comprised of stainless steel. According to some examples, the post 520 may be coupled to the plate 510. For example, the post 520 may be welded (e.g., stud welded) to the plate 510. According to other examples, the plate 510 and the post 520 may be integrally formed as single component.
[0050] According to some examples, as shown in FIG. 8, the post 520 may extend from an elevated flange 515 of the plate 510. [0069] As shown in FIG. 11, the hinge assembly 700 may further include a housing 730 including a channel 731 extending therethrough, an actuator mounting hole 732, and a pair of hinge post coupling holes 733. As shown in FIG. 11, the hinge assembly 700 may further include a pair of dampers 740, a pair of receivers 750, a pair of axial elastic members 760, a pair of axial locks 770, an actuator 780, and an actuator elastic member 781. According to the present disclosure, each of the pair of dampers 740, the pair of receivers 750, the pair of axial elastic members 760, the pair of axial locks 770, the actuator 780, and the actuator elastic member 781 may be disposed in the channel 731 of the housing 730.
[0070] For example, one of the pair of dampers 740 may be disposed at each end of the channel 731. Each of the pair of dampers 740 may be configured to engage a toilet seat (e.g., 310) and a seat cover (e.g., 320) coupled to the hinge assembly 700. According to some examples, each of the dampers 740 may include a seat cover ring 741 configured to be disposed between the damper 740 and a seat cover coupled to the damper 740. The seat cover ring 741 may allow a seat cover coupled to the damper 740 to be moved (e.g., rotated) independently of a seat coupled to the damper 740.
[0071] Further, according to some examples, each of the pair of receivers 750 may be disposed adjacent to a damper 740 at a respective end of the channel 731. Each of the receivers 750 may include a receptacle configured to receive the post 714 of a hinge tower 710 coupled to a respective side of the housing 730. According to some examples, one of the pair of axial elastic members 760 may be disposed between the receiver 750 and one of the pair of axial locks 770 disposed in a respective side of the hinge channel 731. The axial elastic member 760 may be compressed between the receiver 750 and the axial lock 770, biasing the receiver 750 and the axial lock 770 in opposite directions. According to some examples, each of the axial locks 770 may include an aperture 771 extending therethrough configured to engage the radial groove or depression 715 of a respective one of the hinge towers 710. The hinge assembly 700 may further include an actuator disposed between the pair of axial locks 770. [0072] According to some examples, the post 714 of each of the hinge towers 710 may be inserted through a respective hinge post coupling hole 733, into the receptacle of a respective receiver 750, and through the aperture 771 of a respective axial lock 770, such that the axial lock engages the radial groove or depression 715 of the post 714, locking the post 714 within the housing 730 and coupling the respective hinge tower 710 to the housing 730. According to the present disclosure, when the actuator 780 is depressed (e.g., into the channel 731), the actuator 780 may engage each of the axial locks 770, moving the axial locks 770 toward a respective end of the channel 731 and freeing the depression 715 around the post 714 from the aperture 771 of locking member 770, such that the post 714 may be withdrawn from the housing 730.
[0073] Referring to FIG. 12, a side cross section view of a toilet assembly 800 is illustrated in accordance with one example of the present disclosure. According to some examples, an orientation of a hinge plate 810 may be changed, such that a distance or offset 820 between an axis 830 about which a toilet seat (e.g., 310) and seat cover 320 rotate and a tank 840 of the toilet may be changed. Specifically, according to some examples, an orientation of the hinge plate 810 may be flipped without changing the location of one or more anchors or mounting holes disposed in the pedestal 850 of the toilet assembly 800. For example, an orientation of the hinge plate 810 may be changed from one in which the axis about which a seat (e.g., 310) and a seat cover 320 rotate is disposed on a side of the hinge plate 810 closest to the tank 840 (as shown in FIG. 12) to one in which the axis about which a seat (e.g., 310) and a seat cover 320 rotate is disposed on a side of the hinge plate 810 closest to a bowl 860 of the toilet assembly 800.
[0074] According to the present disclosure, as an orientation of the hinge plate 810, and thus an offset or distance 820 between an axis 830 about which a seat and a seat cover 320 rotate and the tank 840 changes, an angle 870 (e.g., relative to the horizontal) at which a seat and / or a seat cover 320 rests on the tank 840 changes. According to some examples, different dampers may be used when an orientation of the hinge plate 810 changes.
[0075] Referring to FIG. 13, a flow chart 900 for assembling a hinge assembly to a toilet is illustrated in accordance with one example of the present disclosure. The flow chart 900 may be used to assemble or couple any of the hinge assemblies 400, 600, 700 to a toilet. Additional, different, or fewer acts may be provided.
[0076] In a first act S101, a top mount anchor is inserted into a base of the toilet from a top of the base. For example, top mount anchor 680 or another anchor may be inserted into the base or pedestal of a toilet (e.g., toilet 100, 200). According to some examples, a bottom portion of the top mount anchor 680 may be rotated so as to be inserted through a hole or opening extending through a top panel of a base or pedestal of the toilet. After being inserted through a hole or opening in the base, the bottom portion of the top mount anchor may rotate back to its original position, securing the top mount anchor 680 in the base or pedestal.
[0077] In a second act S103, a composite hinge plate including a mounting bracket and a plate cover formed on the mounting bracket is placed on the base of the toilet, such that a mounting hole extending through a mounting plate of the mounting bracket is aligned with the top mount anchor. According to some examples, for example, when hinge plate 500 or 610 according to the present disclosure are placed on the base or pedestal of the toilet, two mounting holes 512 included in the hinge plate may be aligned with respective anchors (e.g., top mount anchors 680) coupled to the base.
[0078] In a third act S105, a fastener which extends through the mounting hole is coupled to the top mount anchor. For example, a bolt, screw, rivet, or the like may be inserted through each of the mounting holes extending through the hinge plate and into (e.g., through) a respective one of the anchors (e.g., top mount anchors 680) disposed in the base or pedestal of the toilet. According to some examples, the anchors may be threaded such that a fastener may be rotated so as to threadedly engage the anchor, coupling the hinge plate to the base of the toilet.
[0079] In a fourth act S107, a housing of the hinge assembly, including a pair of dampers, a pair of receivers, and a locking insert is coupled to the hinge plate. According to some examples, the pair of dampers, pair of anchors, and locking insert may all be provided or disposed in a channel (e.g., channel 411) of the housing (e.g., housing 410) and the housing may subsequently be coupled to the hinge plate. For example, one or more receivers, for example, one or more receivers disposed in a channel of the housing may be aligned with a post (e.g., post 520) extending from hinge plate and the post may be inserted into a receptacle (e.g., receptacle 441) of the receiver, coupling the housing to the hinge plate. For example, a post may be press fit or snap fit into each of the receivers, coupling the housing to the hinge plate. According to some examples, the hinge assembly may include a “quick-release” functionality, such that the posts may be withdrawn from the receptacles and the housing may be separated from the housing when a button or actuator (e.g., actuator 780) is actuated (e.g., depressed).
