Abstract
Description
TECHNICAL FIELD
[0001] The present invention relates to the field of trunks, in particular those which can be moved by rolling by means of a set of casters.
[0002] It should be noted that trunks can be distinguished from suitcases and other smaller items of luggage. It is thus known that trunks are defined as large rigid pieces of luggage. In particular, trunks are generally bulkier (taller and longer) and more rigid than suitcases and have a parallelepiped shape.BACKGROUND
[0003] The state of the art comprises the description of luggage and methods for manufacturing such luggage which feature a step of assembling a frame, for example a frame composed of angle pieces which define a substantially parallelepiped structure onto which panels are then assembled, to form a barrel, and a lid allowing the luggage to be opened and closed.
[0004] Document EP3476241A1 describes such an assembly method for this type of luggage. However, this type of luggage is not a trunk and does not have a comparable structure.
[0005] And yet there is a need for larger luggage, in other words trunks. Trunks can transport more volume and mass and are generally designed to be stronger and more durable. This implies that trunks are extremely robust. The sides of this type of trunk run parallel to each other, with adjacent sides forming right angles. The edges of such trunks need to be protected by sockets which reinforce these edges.
[0006] However, it is difficult to ensure both the rigidity and flexibility required for such trunks.
[0007] The invention aims to provide trunks with both high rigidity and suitable flexibility. The trunks according to the invention are thus robust and durable. The invention also relates to a method for manufacturing such trunks.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0008] More precisely, the object of the invention is a trunk system comprising a barrel and an opening lid, the barrel and the opening lid each comprising a parallelepiped frame composed of a set of rigid panels, one rigid panel of which forming a bottom and four rigid panels forming side walls, each parallelepiped frame having an opening defined by the absence of a rigid panel facing the bottom, the side walls being parallel in pairs and being orthogonal when they are adjacent, the rigid panels being engaged in grooves provided in angle pieces, the angle pieces being assembled by means of assembly members, each assembly member having three feet, each foot comprising a fastening member engaging with a complementary fastening member belonging to each angle piece end, so as to fasten three angle pieces to an assembly member in order to form a right-angled vertex of the corresponding parallelepiped frame, the angle pieces defining edges of the parallelepiped frame of the barrel or of the opening lid, the opening of the parallelepiped frame of the barrel being intended to be closed by the opening lid pivotably mounted on the barrel, the openings of the barrel and of the opening lid facing each other, at least one edge of the parallelepiped frame of the barrel and / or of the opening lid being covered from the outside by at least one respective socket assembled by means of mechanical fastening means to the rigid panels on either side of the angle piece corresponding to the edge, the mechanical fastening means being configured to connect the at least one socket to the rigid panels on either side of the angle piece by passing through the rigid panels, and the mechanical fastening means not passing through the angle pieces or the assembly members, the at least one socket ensuring a joint between adjacent and orthogonal rigid panels on either side of the corresponding angle piece, and said rigid panels thus being engaged in the angle pieces without being fastened thereto.
[0009] The trunk systems according to the invention notably have the advantage of being both flexible and very robust since the solid sockets provide protection to the edges, improving the rigidity of the structure of the trunk, while at the same time being stitched or nailed or riveted, for example, directly into the panels on either side of the angle piece, but not into the angle piece itself nor into the assembly members or “connectors” that link the different angle pieces at each vertex of the parallelepiped structure of the trunk system.
[0010] There is thus a flexibility, in other words a degree of freedom, at each interface between an angle piece and a panel, ensuring that the structure is suitably flexible (flexibility is also ensured by the choice of panels themselves).
[0011] Advantageously, the mechanical fastening means comprise a stitching, the stitching being made through the rigid panels on both sides of the angle piece and the stitching not passing through the angle pieces or the assembly members.
[0012] According to an embodiment, the angle pieces have grooves with an L-shaped cross-section and the rigid panels have a fold on at least a portion of the edges thereof, notably at right angles, towards the interior of the corresponding parallelepiped frame, so as to form a peripheral edge having at least a portion with an L-shaped cross-section, the peripheral edges of the rigid panels being engaged in the grooves provided to conform with the angle pieces, so as to ensure the engagement of the rigid panels on the angle pieces.
[0013] According to one embodiment, the angle pieces are fastened to the assembly members by means of fastening screws.
[0014] Advantageously, the trunk system comprises a reinforcement frame attached to the barrel at the opening of the parallelepiped frame of the barrel and / or the parallelepiped frame of the opening lid.
[0015] In particular, the reinforcement frame can be made of carbon fiber.
[0016] According to one embodiment, at least one of the following accessory parts is attached to the reinforcement frame: one or more gripping handles, one or more locks, one or more hinges, an inner lining, one or more fasteners, one or more hasps.
[0017] According to one embodiment, the trunk system comprises a strap encircling the parallelepiped frame of the barrel at a peripheral edge on the opening side, with the strap projecting, the projection being configured to guide the opening lid during the closing thereof and to contribute to the rigidity between the barrel and the opening lid when the trunk system is in use.
[0018] Advantageously, the trunk system also comprises removable corners to protect the vertices of each parallelepiped frame.
[0019] The present invention also relates to a method for manufacturing a trunk system as briefly described hereinbefore, according to which, for each parallelepiped frame: rigid panels are cut,
[0020] portions of the peripheral edge of the rigid panels are folded at right angles, so as to form a peripheral edge of the rigid panels having at least one portion with an L-shaped cross-section,
[0021] the peripheral edge of each rigid panel is engaged in grooves having an L-shaped cross-section arranged on angle pieces,
[0022] the angle pieces, wherein the rigid panels are engaged, are assembled on assembly members to form each parallelepiped frame, then,
[0023] the rigid panels belonging to each parallelepiped frame are sheathed from the outside with fabric,
[0024] sockets are provided on each edge of each parallelepiped frame,
[0025] mechanical fastening means are implanted to fasten each socket to two adjacent rigid panels, the mechanical fastening means being implanted on each side of the corresponding angle piece, the mechanical fastening means passing through and perforating the socket and the corresponding rigid panel, and the mechanical fastening means not passing through the angle piece or any of the corresponding assembly members,
[0026] in such a way as to form, on the one hand, the barrel and, on the other, the opening lid,
[0027] the barrel and the opening lid are assembled, the opening lid being pivotably mounted on the barrel.
[0028] According to the invention, the fabric can be made of leather or any other suitable facing material.
[0029] According to one embodiment, the mechanical fastening means consist of stitching.
[0030] According to an advantageous embodiment, the rigid panels are marked to facilitate the folding of at least a portion of the peripheral edge thereof.
[0031] According to one embodiment, a reinforcement frame is also attached to the parallelepiped frame of the barrel and / or to the parallelepiped frame of the opening lid.PRESENTATION OF THE FIGURES

[0048] The invention relates to a trunk system and a corresponding manufacturing method. FIGS. 1 to 3 show an example of a trunk system 1 according to the invention, in isometric view, top view and side view respectively.
[0049] As can be seen in FIG. 2 or FIG. 3, such a trunk system 1 can sometimes be referred to as a “trolley” type trunk, that is, comprising caster wheels 4 and a telescopic rod handle 6 for rolling over the floor. The trunk system comprises a barrel 110 and an opening lid 120. The opening lid 120 is for example pivotably mounted to the barrel 110 by means of hinges 9.
[0050] The barrel 110 is formed from an assembly of angle pieces 2 seen in FIG. 4. The angle pieces 2 are assembled to form a parallelepiped frame. Five rigid panels 11, as depicted in FIG. 5, engage in grooves 21 arranged in the angle pieces 2 so as to form such a parallelepiped frame. Generally, the rigid panels 11 are preferably made of a material suitable for the intended use, and as a result selected for its strength and lightness properties, and compatibility with the method of attaching the sockets to the rigid panels, in particular stitching, described in detail below. In particular, the rigid panels 11 can be made of a material from the family of self-reinforced thermoplastics, such as srPET (for “self-reinforced polyethylene terephthalate”), srPLA (for “self-reinforced polylactic acid”), and so on. The rigid panels can, for example, be made of srPP (“self-reinforced polypropylene”). The parallelepiped frame of the barrel 110 has an upper opening designed to be closed by the opening lid 120, itself configured to be mounted, for example pivotably, on the barrel 110.
[0051] Referring to FIG. 6, the angle pieces 2 of the parallelepiped frame of the barrel 110 are connected therebetween by assembly members 3. The assembly members 3 are connecting elements with three axis, referred to as tripods.
[0052] Preferably, the grooves 21 arranged in the angle pieces 2 have an L-shaped cross-section and the rigid panels 11 have a fold 12 along all or part of the peripheral edge thereof. To this end, for example, a weakness is created by digging a furrow in the material of the rigid panel 11, so as to reduce the thickness of the rigid panel 11 along an axis parallel to the edge, for example at a distance of between 2 mm and 6 mm from the edge. This local weakness makes it easier to fold the rigid panel 11. Rigid panels 11 are thus obtained having at least a portion of the peripheral edge thereof with a fold 12 and therefore an L-shaped cross-section.
[0053] Referring to FIG. 7, which shows a cross-sectional view of the vertex of a parallelepiped frame of the trunk system 1, a fabric 90 may be fitted from the outside around the perimeter of the frame thus created by assembling the angle pieces 2 attached together by means of assembly members 3, and rigid panels 11. The fabric 90 is used to sheathe the panels 11. The fabric 90 can be made of leather or another facing material. For example, the fabric 90 can be a metal strip, a film look, or any other material suitable for this purpose of facing and covering a trunk.
[0054] Still referring to FIG. 7, sockets 50 are placed on the edges of the parallelepiped frame, from outside the volume defined by said frame, in order to protect the edges of the trunk system 1.
[0055] Also referring to FIG. 7, according to the invention, the sockets 50 are assembled to the rigid panels 11 by installing mechanical fastening means capable of passing through, in other words perforating, the sockets 50 and the rigid panels 11 in order to attach the sockets 50 to the rigid panels 11. Mechanical fastening means may be nails or rivets, a combination of both, or any other similar means, for example. In the embodiment described in more detail below, the mechanical fastening means consist of stitching, in other words a seam.
[0056] As can be seen in FIG. 12, the stitching 51 thus passes through each socket 50 and each rigid panel 11 of the barrel 110. The stitching 51 does not pass through either the angle pieces 2 or the assembly members 3 of the barrel 110. If the fastening means are nails or rivets or any other similar means, the same applies: the fastening means pass through the socket 50 and the respective rigid panel 11, on both sides of the angle piece 2, without passing through either the angle piece 2 or the fastening members 3.
[0057] The opening lid 120 is also formed from an assembly of angle pieces 2 wherein rigid panels 11 are engaged by translation, the angle pieces 2 being attached together via assembly members 3 seen in FIG. 9. Sockets 50 are arranged on the edges of the opening lid 120 and mechanically attached, for example stitched, in other words sewn, to the rigid panels 11, the stitching 51 not passing through either the angle pieces 2 or the assembly members 3 of the lid 120. The stitching 51 is made through each socket 50 and each rigid panel 11 of the opening lid 120
[0058] The method for manufacturing a trunk system 1 is described below, according to one embodiment.Manufacturing Method
[0059] Rigid panels 11 are, for example, panels of self-reinforced thermoplastic material, such as srPLA, srPET or srPP for example, cut from semi-processed or consolidated sheets of the chosen self-reinforced thermoplastic material, for example comprising a plurality of folds, in particular, by way of illustration, seven folds. These rigid panels 11 notably shown in FIG. 8 can be obtained by laser cutting or by any other suitable method.
[0060] Weaknesses to facilitate folding can also be produced, for example, by means of a partial cut in the thickness, in particular by a laser cutting technique or by another suitable technique. The rigid panels 11 are notably preferably incised in this way a few millimeters from the edge, for example 3 mm from the edge, over part of the thickness thereof, for example half of the thickness thereof, in order to facilitate folding.
[0061] The rigid panels 11 of self-reinforced thermoplastic material are cut to the size of each face of the shell of the trunk system 1, the shell corresponding to the parallelepiped structure of the trunk system 1 and having two parts, one for the barrel 110 and the other for the lid 120.
[0062] The incision, made for example by laser cutting, creates a groove, in order words a “weakness”, for example approximately 3 mm from the edge at mid-thickness of the rigid panel 11.
[0063] Referring to FIG. 10, as well as to the diagram in FIG. 7, the fold(s) 12 of the rigid panel 11 are then engaged in one or more grooves 21 provided in each angle piece 2.
[0064] According to one embodiment of the proposed manufacturing method, the rigid panels are first dressed, in other words, covered and sheathed, with fabric 90 (made of leather or any other facing material suitable for this purpose, as shown previously) sheathing the rigid panels 11 from the outside.
[0065] The angle pieces 2 are assembled on the assembly members 3 to which they are attached, for example by screwing. The assembly members 3 are used to join and attach angle pieces 2 together in three directions forming a three-dimensional right angle.
[0066] As shown in FIG. 8, in order to produce a parallelepiped frame for the barrel 120 of the trunk system 1, the sets of angle pieces 2 and rigid panels 11 are assembled to form a rectangular parallelepiped with one rigid panel 11 forming the bottom of the barrel 110 and four rigid panels 11 forming the side walls of the barrel 110, the barrel 110 being open along the last face thereof. The opening of the barrel 110 is configured to be closed via the opening lid 120 manufactured in a similar way to the barrel 110.
[0067] Thus, three panels are assembled by engaging them in respective grooves in the angle pieces 2 and the three respective ends of said angle pieces 2 are attached to an assembly member 3, which may be a connector made of plastic or another suitable material, in particular a “tripod” as shown in FIG. 9. The assembly member 3 is used to join three angle pieces 2. Three rigid panels 11 with folded edges 12 are engaged in each angle piece 2, thus creating the parallelepiped frame of the barrel 110. The parallelepiped frame of the opening lid 120 is made in a similar way.
[0068] The assembly member 3, also referred to as a tripod, engages into the three angle pieces 2 forming a three-dimensional right angle to connect them together. The angle pieces 2 are then attached to the tripods by screwing or by any other suitable assembly means, for example by means of screws and inserts.
[0069] One advantage of the invention is that, by assembling rigid panels 11 which are planar-apart from their right-angled folded peripheral edge (folds 12), via the angle pieces 2 and the assembly members 3 (or tripods), a right-angled parallelepiped is created, with no draft angle as is required when using thermoforming and / or plastic injection or thermocompression technology.
[0070] In contrast to luggage shells manufactured by thermoforming and / or thermocompression and / or any other molding method, including those made from self-reinforced thermoplastic material, the faces of the frame of the barrel 110, like those of the opening lid 120, are herein planar and regular, with no concave or convex portions.
[0071] As a manufacturing method, we also note that this technique, according to the invention, of assembling rigid panels 11 assembled by means of angle pieces 2 and tripod-type assembly members 3 (or other equivalent assembly members) also makes it easy to vary the respective volumes of the barrel 110 and of the opening lid 120 of a trunk system 1.
[0072] A fabric 90 (made of leather or any other facing material suitable for this purpose, as previously shown) is arranged to provide an outer sheathing for the rigid panels 11 of the frame of the barrel 110. The same applies to the opening lid 120.
[0073] The next step is to provide sockets 50, as seen in FIG. 11, in order to protect the edges of the frame of the barrel 110. The same applies to the opening lid 120. As is well known in the technical field of trunk systems, the sockets 50 constitute consolidations in the form of right angle pieces attached to the outside of the barrel 110 or the opening lid 120. A socket is thus an elongated part having a V-shaped cross-section, made of flexible, resistant material and configured to cover an edge of a trunk system 1 at the junction between two rigid panels 11. The sockets 50 thus protect the edges of the trunk system 1. The sockets 50 are made for example of leather or lozine (a soft, strong material made from vulcanized paper) or any other material having similar softness and strength characteristics.
[0074] A socket 50 is provided on each edge at the junction of two rigid panels 11 and mechanically attached. For example, the socket 50 is stitched and sewn through the rigid panel 11, on each side of the angle piece 2, without stitching the angle piece 2 or the assembly member 3, in order to consolidate, reinforce and stiffen the frame of the barrel 110, composed of angle pieces 2, rigid panels 11 assembled by engaging the L-shaped edges of each rigid panel 11 in a groove 21 of an angle piece 2 and by attaching the angle pieces 2 together via assembly members 3. The same applies to the opening lid 120.
[0075] This increases the robustness of the trunk system 1.
[0076] As shown in FIG. 12, according to one embodiment, the sockets 50 are stitched to the rigid panels 11. This is achieved by stitching through the sockets 50 and through the rigid panels 11. The stitching 51 through the rigid panels 11, in particular of self-reinforced thermoplastic material, and the sockets 50, in order to sew the sockets 50 to the rigid panels 11, consolidates the frame of the barrel 110. The same applies to the opening lid 120. This thus protects the edges of the frame of the barrel 110 and masks the assembly joints between the angle pieces 2 and rigid panels 11. The same applies to the opening lid 120.
[0077] At the same time, the trunk system 1 according to the invention retains a flexibility suitable for absorbing mechanical stresses undergone by the trunk system 1, thereby increasing its strength and durability. In fact, in the embodiment involving stitching in particular, the sewing threads do not pass through the angle pieces 2 or the assembly members 3. Thereby, the rigid panels 11 can still slide in the grooves 21 of the angle pieces 2 and can only pivot to a very limited extent around the angle pieces 2. This effect can also be obtained using other mechanical fastening means, such as nails or rivets, to fasten the sockets 50 to the rigid panels 11.
[0078] The faces of the resulting parallelepiped structure of the barrel 110 are thus perfectly parallel. The same applies to the opening lid 120.
[0079] The opening lid 120 is thus assembled in a similar way to the barrel 110. A lid frame is made from angle pieces 2 and rigid panels 41 like those shown in FIG. 13. The angle pieces 2 feature a groove 21 wherein an edge 42 of a rigid panel 41, for example made of self-reinforced thermoplastic material, is respectively engaged. The angle pieces 2 are attached together by means of an assembly member 3. The assembly member 3 comprises, for example, three feet 31, each foot 31 comprising a fastening member engaging with a complementary fastening member belonging to each angle piece 2 end, so as to attach angle pieces 2 to an assembly member 3 in order to form a right angle corresponding to the vertices of the parallelepiped frame of the opening lid 120.
[0080] Then, according to one embodiment, reinforcement means (reinforcement frame, strap) and accessories (wheels, telescopic rod, handles, locks) can be assembled, as shown in FIG. 14.
[0081] To this end, one or more reinforcement frames 81 are provided. Preferably, there is one thereof in the barrel 110 and another identical one in the opening lid 120 attached to the vertical angle pieces 2, that is, the angle pieces 2 extending orthogonally to the rigid panel 11 forming the bottom of the parallelepiped frame of the barrel 110 and / or of the opening lid 120.
[0082] The reinforcement frame(s) 81 can be sheathed by means of fabric or any other suitable facing material, such as leather, decorative sheet metal, etc. This means that a thermoformed or non-thermoformed lining can be installed on the inside of at least one of the parallelepiped frames, in particular inside the barrel 110.
[0083] According to one embodiment, a sheathed strap 82 is placed against the thermoformed lining of the barrel 110. As is well known, a strap 82 is a band, particularly of metal or any other suitable rigid material, used for strapping and reinforcing the trunk system 1.
[0084] In the opening lid 120, in a similar way, a lining can be installed on the inside of the opening lid 120. A separator can also be installed in the volume of the opening lid 120 or any other functional accessory such as elastic or rigid straps, etc.
[0085] The reinforcement frame(s) 81 is (are) locked to the frame of the barrel 110 and / or to the frame of the opening lid 120, in particular to angle pieces 2 of the corresponding parallelepiped frame. The reinforcement frames 81 are pressed against the parallelepiped frame of the barrel 110 and the reinforcement frames 81 are attached to the frame. If necessary, the same applies to the opening lid 120.
[0086] The presence of reinforcement frames 81 increases the sturdiness of the trunk system 1. Optionally, functional accessories such as locks 7, hasps (the movable metal part attached to the opening lid of a piece of luggage such as a trunk to enable it to be closed), hinges 9, fasteners (leather, metal or textile strips used to keep a piece of luggage open) can be attached. Screwing is used to lock the structure of the trunk system and attach these accessories.
[0087] The reinforcement frames 81 are preferably made of a rigid, lightweight and strong material, for example aluminum, carbon fiber, ABS, srPP or another self-reinforced thermoplastic material.
[0088] The strap 82 can be part of a reinforcement frame 81 or a be a separate part. The strap 82 projects with respect to the edge of the rigid panels 11, encircling the opening in the parallelepiped frame of the barrel 110. The projection made by the strap 82 is thus orthogonal to the peripheral edge running around the opening of the barrel 110, forming a small wall 2 to 8 mm high for example, capable of guiding the opening lid 120 of the trunk system 1 during the closing thereof. The strap 82 also contributes to the rigidity between the barrel 110 and the opening lid 120 during use of the product (rolling, carrying, etc.).
[0089] One reinforcement frame 81 is thus for example attached in the volume of the barrel 110 and another reinforcement frame is attached in the volume of the opening lid 120.
[0090] According to one embodiment, the vertices of the trunk system 1 are protected by removable rigid corners 15. The removable nature of the rigid corners 15 protecting the vertices of the parallelepiped-shaped trunk system 1 improves the reparability of the trunk system 1 according to the invention.
[0091] According to one embodiment, the stitching 51 may stop before the vertex, in particular at a distance of between 10 mm and 15 mm upstream of each vertex.
[0092] For example, the stitching is made approximately 2 mm from the edge of the socket 50.
[0093] The thickness of the complex to be stitched, for leather or lozine sockets 50 stitched into suitable srPP panels, is for example 0.9 mm, with leather or lozine sockets 50, a fabric 90 with a thickness of between 0.5 mm and 1 mm, rigid multi-ply srPP panels 11 with a thickness of approximately 1.2 mm, that is a total thickness of between 2.6 mm and 3.1 mm.
