[0041] As used herein, the term “radio link control (RLC) ” used herein may refer to a layer 2 protocol used on an air interface. The term “RLC layer” may refer to a sublayer of a 5G new radio (NR) protocol stack interface to PDU data convergence protocol (PDCP) layer from above and MAC layer from below. It interfaces to PDCP via RLC channels and to MAC via logical channels. An RLC entity in a 5G UE has its peer RLC entity in the gNB, or other UEs in the case of NR sidelink communication. An RLC entity can be configured in one of three transmission modes: Transparent Mode (TM) , Unacknowledged Mode (UM) and Acknowledged Mode (AM) . The RLC sublayer can have multiple RLC entities. Each entity is of a specific mode. In the transmit direction, an RLC entity receives RLC SDUs from PDCP on an RLC channel and sends out RLC PDUs to MAC on a logical channel. An RLC PDU contains RLC header plus RLC SDU, but header is absent in TM Mode.

[0042] As used herein, the term “physical (PHY) layer” may refer to the first and lowest layer of an Open System Interconnection Model (OSI Model) . The physical layer (also  known as layer 1) may deal with bit-level transmission between different devices and supports electrical or mechanical interfaces connecting to the physical medium for synchronized communication.

[0043] The term “MAC control element (CE) ” used herein may refer to a MAC structure that carries control information. The term “MAC control protocol data unit (PDU) ” used herein may refer to a package of data (agroup of data bits) that includes a header, and data protocol information that is used to control and transfer information across a type of medium. MAC PDUs may also have payload (for example, data or MAC CE) after the header (e.g. user data) . A MAC PDU header contains a header type, and payload type. An RLC PDU may include an RLC header and an RLC payload. At MAC sublayer, such an RLC PDU is called MAC Service Data Unit (SDU) . MAC adds a subheader to this to construct a MAC subPDU. MAC also sends / receives Control Elements (CEs) , each with its own subheader. Signalling via MAC CEs complements RRC signalling by enabling dynamic configuration changes. Multiple MAC SDUs and CEs can be part of a single MAC PDU. A MAC PDU may be packaged as a transport block (TB) and sent on a transport channel to a physical (PHY) layer for transmission.

[0044] As used herein, the term “MAC control plane (CP) entity” used herein may refer to an entity in a MAC layer that processes the MAC PDU including control information. The term “MAC user plane (UP) entity” used herein may refer to an entity in a MAC layer that processes the MAC PDU including user data. The term “MAC CP PDU” may refer to a MAC PDU that includes control information. The term “MAC UP PDU” may refer to a MAC PDU that includes user data, for example, DRB SDU (s) or a combination of DRB SDU and SRB SDU. In an example embodiment, the MAC UP PDU may also include fixed size MAC CEs.

[0045] As used herein, the term “buffer status report (BSR) ” used herein may refer to information about uplink data volume in a MAC entity of a terminal device that is provided to a network device. The term “random access procedure” uses herein may refer to a procedure that can get an initial uplink grant and perform synchronization to network. The term “scheduling request (SR) ” used herein may refer to a request that can be sent to network to get an uplink grant. The term “power headroom report (PHR) ” used herein may refer to information about difference between a nominal max UE transmission power and an estimated power for uplink shared channel transmission. The term “beam failure recovery (BFR) ” used herein may refer to a procedure that is used when a terminal device  is suffering from poor channel condition. The term “transmission configuration indicator (TCI) state” used herein may refer to information that is used to indicate a transmission configuration which includes quasi co-location (QCL) -relationships between downlink reference signals (RS) in one reference signal (RS) set and a physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) demodulation reference signal (DMRS) port. The term “secondary cell (SCell) ” used herein may refer to for the terminal device configured with a carrier aggregation (CA) , a cell providing addition radio resources. The term “an activation of a cell” used herein may refer to a procedure there is a transmission via RLC bearers of the cell. The term “adeactivation of a cell” used herein may refer to a procedure where there is no transmission via RLC bearers of the cell. The term “transmission duplication” used herein may refer to PDCP duplication with one DRB duplicated into multiple RLC entities. Duplication activation / deactivation may control those secondary RLC entities. The term “transmission duplication activation” herein may refer to a case that the mechanism where data MAC PDUs can be duplicated and transmitted for several times is to be activated. The term “transmission duplication deactivation” herein may refer to a case that the mechanism where data MAC PDUs can be duplicated and transmitted for several times is to be deactivated.

[0046] The term “serving cell” used herein may refer to one or more cells that are currently in communication with UE. The term “bandwidth part (BWP) ” may refer to a set of resource blocks. The term “radio network temporary identifier” may refer to a temporary identifier that is assigned to UE. The term “downlink assignment” may refer to information that indicates resources for downlink transmission. The term “uplink grant” may refer to information that indicates resources for uplink transmission. The term “downlink control information (DCI) format” may refer to a format that is used for transmitting DCI. The term “hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) ” used herein may refer to a technique to improve reliable and efficiency of data transmission. The term “semi-persistent scheduling (SPS) ” may refer to a transmission mode in which the serving base station allocates at least a part of resources and transport formats to the UE semi-statically over a certain time interval. The term “configured grant (CG) ” may refer to a mechanism where a set of resources may be preconfigured for transmission.

[0047] As mentioned above, the MAC layer has served the purpose of both CP and UP functionalities so far. Some of the MAC CEs served the purpose of RRC reconfiguration in a faster manner, for example, the ones introduced for multi-input-multi-output (MIMO)  TCI state control, channel state information (CSI) -RS resource set activation / deactivation and the like. Many MAC CEs are defined for the CP functionalities, and they share the same logical channel identity (LCID) space as for UP SDUs from the Logical channels. However, mixing MAC CEs with user data carried in MAC SDUs does not allow the user plane data to be quickly processed. Therefore, a solution on splitting CP and UP for MAC layer is needed.

[0048] Example Environment

[0049] FIG. 1 illustrates an example communication environment 100 in which example embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented. In the communication environment 100, a plurality of devices, including a device 110 (referred to as “first device” hereinafter) and a device 120 (referred to as “second device” hereinafter) , can communicate with each other. The device 110 may be in a coverage of a serving cell 102.

[0051] In some example embodiments, if the device 110 is a terminal device and the device 120 is a network device, a link from the device 120 to the device 110 is referred to as a downlink (DL) , and a link from the device 110 to the device 120 is referred to as an uplink (UL) . In DL, the device 120 is a transmitting (TX) device (or a transmitter) and the device 110 is a receiving (RX) device (or a receiver) . In UL, the device 110 is a TX device (or a transmitter) and the device 120 is a RX device (or a receiver) .

[0052] Communications in the communication environment 100 may be implemented according to any proper communication protocol (s) , comprising, but not limited to, cellular communication protocols of the first generation (1G) , the second generation (2G) , the third generation (3G) , the fourth generation (4G) , the fifth generation (5G) , the sixth generation (6G) , and the like, wireless local network communication protocols such as Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 and the like, and / or any other protocols currently known or to be developed in the future. Moreover, the communication may utilize any proper wireless communication technology, comprising  but not limited to: Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) , Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA) , Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) , Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) , Time Division Duplex (TDD) , Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) , Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple (OFDM) , Discrete Fourier Transform spread OFDM (DFT-s-OFDM) and / or any other technologies currently known or to be developed in the future.

[0053] Work Principle and Example Signaling for Communication

[0054] According to some example embodiments of the present disclosure, there is provided a solution for splitting CP and UP for MAC layer. In particular, MAC CP PDUs including control information and MAC UP PDUs including user data are processed in separated entities in a MAC layer. In this way, the MAC UP PDUs can be processed faster.

[0055] Example embodiments of the present disclosure will be described in detail below with reference to the accompanying drawings.

[0056] Reference is now made to FIG. 2, which shows a signaling chart 200 for communication according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. As shown in FIG. 2, the signaling chart 200 involves the device 110 and the device 120.

[0057] The device 110 and the device 120 may be configured with tables that indicates values of LCID. In addition, the LCID space may have been extended to cope with the new MAC CEs defined for different features. Tables 1 to 7 shows examples of values of LCID for DL / UL-SCH, which may be in technical specification (TS) 38.321.

[0058] Table 1 Values of LCID for DL-SCH

[0059] Table 2 Values of two-octet eLCID for DL-SCH

[0060] Table 3 Values of one-octet eLCID for DL-SCH

[0061] Table 4 Values of LCID for MBS broadcast on DL-SCH

[0062] Table 5 Values of LCID for UL-SCH

[0063] Table 6 Values of two-octet eLCID for UL-SCH

[0064] Table 7 Values of one-octet eLCID for UL-SCH

[0065] In some example embodiments, the device 120 may transmit (2010) a transport block that includes the MAC PDU. In other words, the device 110 may receive (2010) the transport block including the MAC PDU from the device 120. Alternatively, the device 110 may generate the MAC PDU.

[0066] The device 110 determines (2020) whether the MAC PDU is related to a first sub-entity or a second sub-entity in a MAC layer of the device 110. For the purpose of illustrations, the first sub-entity may be referred to as MAC CP entity and the second sub- entity may be referred to as MAC UP entity. If the MAC PDU is related to the first sub-entity (i.e., MAC CP entity) , it means that the MAC PDU is a MAC CP PDU, vice versa. If the MAC PDU is related to the second sub-entity (i.e., MAC UP entity) , it means that the MAC PDU is a MAC UP PDU, vice versa.

[0067] The MAC CP entity may be a sub-entity of the MAC layer. Alternatively, the MAC CP entity may be a functionality of the MAC layer. The MAC UP entity may be another sub-entity of the MAC layer. Alternatively, the MAC UP entity may be another functionality of the MAC layer. For example, as shown in FIG. 5, the MAC PDU may be related to the MAC CP entity 510 or the MAC UP entity 520. The MAC CP entity and the MAC UP entity may be logically separated instead of physically separated in the MAC layer. The term “entity” may refer to a resource that can implement some functions, such as, multiplexing, demultiplexing and the like.

[0068] In some example embodiments, whether the MAC PDU is related to the MAC CP entity or MAC UP entity may be determined at a physical layer of the device 110. In an example embodiment, after receiving (2010) the transport block including the MAC PDU, the physical layer of the device 110 may determine whether the MAC PDU is related to the MAC UP entity or the MAC CP entity. For example, whether the MAC PDU is related to the MAC UP entity or the MAC CP entity may be determined based on a serving cell on which the transport block including the MAC PDU is scheduled. Alternatively, the device 110 may determine whether the MAC PDU is related to the MAC UP entity or the MAC CP entity based on a BWP or a physical resource on which the transport port is transmitted or received. In other example embodiments, whether the MAC PDU is related to the MAC UP entity or the MAC CP entity may be determined based on a radio network temporary identifier (for example, cell radio network temporary identifier (C-RNTI) ) with which the transport block is scheduled. In some other example embodiments, the DL assignment or UL grant may explicitly indicate whether the MAC PDU is related to the MAC UP entity or the MAC CP entity. In a yet example embodiment, whether the MAC PDU is related to the MAC UP entity or the MAC CP entity may be determined based on the DCI format with which the transport block is scheduled.

[0069] In some example embodiments, the received (2010) TB may explicitly indicate whether the MAC protocol data unit is related to the MAC user plane entity or the MAC control plane entity. For example, there may be an indication in TB that indicates whether the MAC protocol data unit is related to the MAC user plane entity or the MAC control  plane entity.

[0070] In an example embodiment, the device 110 may determine whether the MAC PDU belongs to a first type of PDU or a second type of PDU. The first type of PDU may indicate control information. For example, the first type of PDU may include one or more MAC CE (s) and / or common control channel (CCCH) SDU. In addition, the first type of PDU may include a padding portion. The first type of PDU may be referred to as MAC CP PDU. In this case, if the MAC PDU is the first type of PDU, the MAC PDU may be related to the MAC CP entity 510.

[0071] FIG. 3A illustrates a schematic diagram of a structure of MAC CP PDU 300. It is noted that FIG. 3A is only an example not limitation. As shown in FIG. 3A, the MAC CP PDU 300 may include one or more MAC subPDUs. A MAC subPDU may start with a subheader. As shown in FIG. 3A, the subheader 310-1 may be followed by a MAC CE 311-1 and the subheader 310-2 may be followed by a MAC CE 311-2. The subheader 310-3 may be followed by a SDU 312 that is CCCH SDU. The MAC CP PDU 300 may include a padding 313. MAC SDUs, CEs and subheaders may be byte aligned and in multiples of 8 bits. Leftmost bit can the most significant bit. MAC SDUs may be of variable sizes. Some MAC CEs may be of fixed size while others may be of variable size. By way of example, the MAC CE 311-1 can be of fixed size and the MAC CE 311-2 may be of variable size.

[0072] The second type of PDU may indicate user data. For example, the second type of PDU may include one or more UP SDUs from a configured LCH. By way of example, the second type of PDU may include RLC SDUs for at least one of service radio bearer (SRB) or data radio bearer (DRB) . In addition, the second type of PDU may include a padding portion. The second type of PDU may be referred to as MAC UP PDU. In this case, if the MAC PDU is the second type of PDU, the MAC PDU may be related to the MAC UP entity 520.

[0073] FIG. 3B illustrates a schematic diagram of a structure of MAC UP PDU 301. It is noted that FIG. 3B is only an example not limitation. As shown in FIG. 3B, the MAC UP PDU 301 may include one or more MAC subPDUs. A As shown in FIG. 3B, the subheader 320-1 may be followed by a SDU 321-1 and the subheader 320-2 may be followed by a SDU 321-2. The MAC UP PDU 301 may include a padding 323.

[0074] FIG. 4A shows an example structure of a MAC subheader. As shown in FIG. 4A  the MAC subheader 410 may include a reserved field 411 that is set of 0, a format field 412 that indicates a size of a length field 414, the length field 414 that indicates the length in byte of a SDU or a variable-size MAC CE. The length field may be absent when not necessary, such as fixed-size MAC CE, padding or MAC SDU including UL CCCH. The MAC subheader 410 may include a logical channel identity (LCID) filed 413-1 that identifies the logical channel carried in a MAC subPDU, a CE or padding. The MAC subheader 410 may include an extended LCID (eLCID) field 413-2 that extends the range of the LCID field. The size of eLCID field 413-2 may be 1 byte if LCID=34, 2 bytes if LCID=33. FIG. 4B shows an example structure of a MAC subheader. As shown in FIG. 4B the MAC subheader 420 may include reserved fields 421-1 and 421-2, a LCID field 423-1 and an eLCID 423-2.

[0075] In an example embodiment, whether the MAC PDU belongs to the first type of PDU or the second type of PDU may be determined at the physical layer of the device 110. For example, in some example embodiments, the first type of PDU and the second type of PDU may be restricted to different serving cells, different BWPs or different physical resources. In an example embodiment, whether the MAC PDU belongs to the first type of PDU or the second type of PDU may be determined based on a serving cell related to the MAC PDU. Alternatively, or in addition, whether the MAC PDU belongs to the first type of PDU or the second type of PDU may be determined based on the BWP on which the transport block including the MAC PDU is transmitted or received. Whether the MAC PDU belongs to the first type of PDU or the second type of PDU may be determined based on a physical resource on which the transport block including MAC PDU is transmitted or received. For example, as shown in FIG. 5, the resource 530-1 may be assigned for the first type of PDU and the resource 530-2 may be assigned for the second type of PDU. In this case, if the MAC PDU is received on the resource 530-1, the MAC PDU may belong to the first type of PDU. If the MAC PDU is received on the resource 530-3, the MAC PDU may belong to the second type of PDU.

[0076] In some example embodiments, the first type of PDU and the second type of PDU may be scheduled with different RNTIs (for example, cell RNTI (C-RNTI) ) . In this case, whether the MAC PDU belongs to the first type of PDU or the second type of PDU may be determined based on a RNTI with which the MAC PDU is scheduled. In some other example embodiments, the DL assignment or UL grant may explicitly indicate whether the MAC PDU is the first type of PDU or the second type of PDU. In a yet  example embodiment, the first type of PDU and the second type of PDU may be scheduled with different DCI formats. In this case, whether the MAC PDU belongs to the first type of PDU or the second type of PDU may be determined based on the DCI format with which the MAC PDU is scheduled.

[0077] In some example embodiments, the received (2010) TB may explicitly indicate whether the MAC PDU belongs to the first type of PDU or the second type of PDU. For example, there may be an indication in TB that indicates whether the MAC PDU belongs to the first type of PDU or the second type of PDU.

[0078] Referring back to FIG. 2, the device 110 processes (2030) the MAC PDU at a corresponding sub-entity in the MAC layer of the device 110 based on a result of the determination (2020) . In this, the MAC PDU can be processed in a faster manner. For example, if the MAC PDU indicates control information, the MAC CP entity may process the MAC CE and / or CCH SDU in the MAC PDU. Alternatively, if the MAC PDU indicates user data, the MAC UP entity may process the SDU (s) in the MAC PDU.

[0079] In some example embodiments, CP and UP functionalities in the MAC layer may be split to different entities (for example, the MAC CP entity 510 and the MAC UP entity 520) . The MAC PDU may be delivered by the physical layer of the device 110 to a user plane entity or a control plane entity in the MAC layer based on the determination (2020) . The physical layer may deliver the MAC PDU to the MAC UP entity or the MAC CP entity based on the determination. For example, if the physical layer determines that the MAC PDU is related to the MAC CP entity, the physical layer may deliver the MAC PDU to the MAC CP entity 510. For example, as shown in FIG. 5, if the MAC PDU is the first type of PDU, the MAC PDU may be delivered to the MAC CP entity 510. If the MAC PDU is the second type of PDU, the MAC PDU may be delivered to the MAC UP entity 520.

[0080] Alternatively, if the physical layer determines that the MAC PDU is related to the MAC UP entity, the physical layer may deliver the MAC PDU to the MAC UP entity 520. Alternatively, regarding uplink transmission, the physical layer may deliver an uplink grant to the MAC UP entity or the MAC CP entity. The corresponding entity (i.e., the MAC CP entity 510 or the MAC UP entity 520) may generate (i.e., the processing 2030) the MAC PDU based on the uplink grant. For example, the MAC CP entity 510 may multiplex MAC CE (s) and / or CCCH SDU and add related headers into the MAC PDU.  Alternatively, the MAC UP entity 520 may multiplex user plane SDUs (for example, RLC SDU) and add related header into the MAC PDU. The corresponding layer may deliver the generated MAC PDU to the physical layer. In this case, the physical layer at the device 110 may transmit (2040) a transport block including the generated MAC PDU to the device 120.

[0081] In an example embodiment, there may be separate pools for the LCID for LCHs and the LCID for MAC CEs so that the full range can be used for both. In other words, the MAC CE and the SDU may not need to share the same LCID space.

[0082] For example, if the MAC PDU belongs to the first type of PDU (i.e., the MAC protocol data unit is related to the MAC CP entity) , the MAC PDU may include a first logical channel identifier of a control channel and the control information related to the logical channel identifier. If the MAC PDU belongs to the MAC user plane protocol data unit (i.e., the MAC protocol data unit is related to the MAC UP entity) , the MAC PDU may include a second logical channel identifier of a configured logical channel and the user data from the configured logical channel. Values of the first logical channel identifier and the second logical channel identifier are determined from separate predetermined logical channel identifier tables. For example, the values of the first and second logical channel identifiers may be selected from the range 0 to 63, as shown in Table 1.

[0083] For example, if the MAC PDU is the first type of PDU (in other words, the MAC PDU is related to the MAC CP entity) , the device 110 may process the MAC PDU at the MAC CP entity 510 in the MAC layer of the device 110. In an example embodiment, the MAC CP entity 510 may control a plurality of serving cells based on the control information in the MAC PDU. For example, the MAC CP entity may control one or more of: a random access procedure, UL time alignment maintenance, PHR, BFR, TCI state update, SCell activation or deactivation, hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) for UL and / or DL and the like. That is, the first type of PDU may include one of: PHR MAC CE, BSR MAC CE, BFR MAC CE, or TA MAC CE. The control information in the MAC PDU may include at least one of: random access procedure information, uplink time alignment maintenance, a beam management (for example, beam failure recovery) , a TCI indicator state update or a secondary cell activation or deactivation. Alternatively, or in addition, the MAC CP entity 510 may access a plurality of radio link control entities (for example, the RLC entities 540-1, 540-2 and 540-3) based on the control information in the MAC PDU. For example, the MAC CP entity 510 may access to the plurality of RLC  entities for one of: SR, BSR trigging, or transmission duplication activation or deactivation. That is, the first type of PDU may include one of: SR, BSR, or transmission duplication activation or deactivation. The control information in the MAC PDU may include one or more of: a SR, a BSR or transmission duplication activation or deactivation.

[0084] In an example embodiment, the MAC PDU may be a DL MAC PDU. For example, the MAC PDU may include control information related to SCell activation / deactivation. The MAC CP entity 510 may control the serving cell based on the SCell activation / deactivation. In another example embodiment, the MAC PDU may be a UL MAC PDU. For example, the MAC PDU may include a BSR MAC CE. The MAC CP entity 510 may process the MAC PDU.

[0085] Alternatively, if the MAC PDU is the second type of PDU (in other word, the MAC PDU is related to the MAC UP entity) , the device 110 may process the MAC PDU at the MAC UP entity 520 in the MAC layer of the device 110. For example, the MAC UP entity 520 may perform one or more of: multiplexing / demultiplexing of user data, hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) for UL and / or DL, semi-persistent scheduling (SPS) operation or a configured grant (CG) operation. For example, for uplink, the MAC UP entity 520 may multiplex SDUs from one or more RLC entities to generate the MAC PDU. Alternatively, for downlink, the MAC UP may demultiplex SDUs in the MAC PDU. In an example embodiment, the MAC UP entity 520 may multiplex the user data to a serving cell or a physical resource for a TB reception or transmission. That is, per DL assignment / UL grant, the MAC UP entity 520 may map to only one serving cell / PHY resources for TB reception / transmission from PHY. Alternatively, or in addition, the MAC UP entity 520 may deliver the user data to one or more RLC entities (for example, one or more of RLC entities 540-1, 540-2 and 540-2) . The MAC UP entity 520 may access to one or more RLC entities depends on whether the RLC entity of the LCH is mapped to one or more serving cell (s)  / PHY resource (s) for multiplexing and demultiplexing. In another example embodiment, the MAC UP entity 520 may obtain the user data from the one or more RLC entities. In an example embodiment, the MAC PDU may be UL MAC PDU. For example, the MAC PDU include a configured grant confirmation. In this case, the MAC PDU belongs to the second type of PDU. The MAC UP entity 520 may process the MAC PDU.

[0086] In an example embodiment, the first type of PDU and the second type of PDU may be multiplexed into a TB. For example, the first type of PDU carrying SRB SDU  may be multiplex with the second type of PDU carrying MAC CE.

[0087] In an example embodiment, the device 110 may obtain another MAC PDU that belongs to the second type of PDU (in other words, the other MAC PDU is related to the MAC UP entity) . If the MAC PDU belongs to the first type of PDU, the device 110 may multiplex the MAC PDU and the other MAC PDU into a TB. For example, as shown in FIG. 6, the MAC CP PDU 300 and the MAC UP PDU 301 may be multiplexed into the TB 600. The device 110 may transmit (2040) the TB to the device 120. In an example embodiment, the device 110 may transmit an indication that indicates the multiplexing of the MAC PDU and the other MAC PDU in the transport block to the device 120. In this case, in some embodiments, the indication may be included in a transport block header 610 shown in FIG. 6. Alternatively, the indication may be a common MAC header. In some other example embodiments, the indication may be transmitted in DCI.

[0088] Alternatively, the received (2010) transport block may include the MAC protocol data unit and another protocol data unit that are multiplexed. In this case, the device 110 may demultiplex the MAC protocol data unit and the other MAC protocol data unit that is related to the MAC user plane entity from the received (2010) transport block. The device 120 may transmit an indication that indicates the multiplexing of the MAC PDU and the other MAC PDU in the transport block to the device 110. In this case, in some embodiments, the indication may be included in a transport block header 610 shown in FIG. 6. Alternatively, the indication may be a common MAC header. In some other example embodiments, the indication may be transmitted in DCI.

[0089] In another example embodiment, the device 110 may obtain the MAC PDU that belongs to the first type of PDU (in other words the MAC PDU related to the MAC CP entity) and the other MAC PDU that belongs to the second type of PDU (i.e., the other MAC PDU related to the MAC UP entity) from the received (2010) TB. In other words, the MAC PDU and the other MAC PDUs may be multiplexed in the received (2010) TB. In an example embodiment, the device 110 may receive an indication that indicates the multiplexing of the MAC PDU and the other MAC PDU in the transport block from the device 120. In this case, in some embodiments, the indication may be included in a transport block header 610 shown in FIG. 6. Alternatively, the indication may be a common MAC header. In some other example embodiments, the indication may be received in DCI.

[0090] Alternatively, the first type of PDU (i.e., the MAC PDU related to the MAC CP entity) may include a SRB SDU. For example, one or more SRB SDUs may be handled by the MAC CP entity 510 in addition to MAC CEs. In this case, the SRB SDUs may be either seen as part of the first type of PDU or as a special UP MAC PDU handled by the MAC CP entity 510.

[0091] In an example embodiment, the device 110 may generate the first type of PDU based on a first processing requirement and generate the second type of PDU based on a second processing requirement. In other words, different processing requirements may be applied in terms of building a MAC CP PDU compared to building a MAC UP PDU. In one example, the second processing requirement may be more stringent that the first processing requirement. For example, the second processing requirement may more stick in terms of time. That is, if the MAC protocol data unit is related to the MAC control plane entity, the device 110 generate the MAC protocol data unit based on a first processing requirement. If the MAC protocol data unit is related to the MAC user plane entity, the device 110 generate the MAC protocol data unit based on a second processing requirement.

[0092] In another example embodiment, the device 110 may obtain a MAC PDU in which the control information and the user data are multiplexed. In this case, the device 110 may process the MAC PDU based on a third processing requirement. In some embodiments, the third processing requirement may be same as a fourth processing requirement for processing the first type of PDU or the second type of PDU. Alternatively, the third processing requirement may be different from the fourth processing requirement. For example, the fourth processing requirement may be stricter in terms of time.

[0093] The device 110 may receive from the device 120 a network configuration regarding on generating the first type of PDU. For example, if the MAC control element has a fixed size, the device 110 may multiplex the MAC control element to the control plane entity or the user plane entity in the MAC layer based on the network configuration. Alternatively, if the MAC control element has a flexible size, the device 110 may the MAC control element to the control plane entity in the MAC layer based on the network configuration. By way of example, the multiplexing of MAC CEs onto MAC entities may be based on whether the MAC CEs have fixed size or not. For the fixed size MAC CES, the network configuration may decide on which MAC entity they are sent. That is, flexible MAC CEs may be always sent on the MAC CP entity 510 while fixed size MAC CEs can  either be multiplexed to the MAC CP entity 510 or the MAC UP entity 520 based on the network configuration.

[0094] In some example embodiments, for both the uplink and downlink, the device 110 may also be allowed to express a preference on whether the MAC CP entity 510 or UP entity 520 is to be used for a MAC CE, and a preference on the position of the MAC CE within the MAC PDU of the entity, i.e., at the beginning, at the end, or anywhere. For example, the device 110 may multiplex the MAC control element in the MAC PDU onto the MAC entity based on preference MAC entity information. For example, if the preference MAC entity information indicates that the MAC UP entity 520 is used for a fixed size MAC CE, the device 110 may multiplex the fixed size MAC CE at the MAC UP entity 520. Alternatively, if the preference MAC entity information indicates that the MAC CP entity 510 is used for a variable size MAC CE, the device 110 may multiplex the variable size MAC CE at the MAC CP entity 510. Alternatively, the device 110 may determine a position of the MAC control element in the MAC PDU based on preference position information. For example, as shown in FIG. 3A, the MAC CEs 312-1 and 312-2 are at the beginning of the MAC CP PDU 300. In an example embodiment, the device 110 may inform the device 120 at least one of: the on preference MAC entity information or the preference position information.

[0095] Example Methods

[0100] In some example embodiments, the method 700 include determining whether the MAC protocol data unit is related to the MAC user plane entity or the MAC control plane entity based on at least one of: a serving cell on which the transport block is scheduled, a bandwidth part on which the transport block is transmitted or received, a physical resource on which the transport block is transmitted or received, a radio network temporary identifier with which the transport block is scheduled, an indication in a downlink assignment or uplink grant, a search space with which the transport block is scheduled, or a downlink control information format with which the transport block is scheduled. In some example embodiments, the method 700 include determining determine whether the MAC protocol data unit is related to the MAC user plane entity or the MAC control plane entity based on an indication in the transport block in which the MAC protocol data unit is received.

[0101] In some example embodiments, the method 700 includes: if the MAC protocol data unit is related to the MAC control plane entity, obtaining another MAC protocol data unit that is related to the MAC user plane entity; multiplexing the MAC protocol data unit and the other MAC protocol data unit into a first transport block; and transmitting the first transport block to the other apparatus. In some example embodiments, the method 700 includes: transmitting, to the other apparatus, a first indication indicating the multiplexing in the first transport block.

[0102] In some example embodiments, the method 700 includes: if the MAC protocol data unit is related to the MAC control plane entity, receiving, from the other apparatus, a second transport block comprising the MAC protocol data unit and another protocol data unit that are multiplexed; and demultiplexing, from the second transport block, the MAC protocol data unit and the other MAC protocol data unit that is related to the MAC user  plane entity. In some example embodiments, the method 700 includes: receiving from the other apparatus a second indication indicating the multiplexing in the second transport block.
