Description

Braking fluid reservoir

[0001] Field of the invention

[0002] The present invention relates to a braking fluid reservoir, in particular to a braking fluid reservoir of a racing motorcycle.

[0003] Background art

[0004] Racing motorcycles are provided with at least one braking fluid reservoir, e.g., a front reservoir and a rear reservoir.

[0005] The known reservoirs typically consist of a braking fluid receptacle closed at the top by a screw-on cap, adapted to allow opening and closing the receptable, which comprises a diaphragm and a membrane. The diaphragm and the membrane are functional in the isolation from the outside and useful in preventing braking fluid from escaping, thus ensuring better drawing of the braking fluid and contributing to the normal function of the braking system, and compensating for the expansion and consequent rise of braking fluid from the caliper to the reservoir.

[0006] The braking fluid reservoir mainly serves two functions. The first function is to compensate for the wear of the friction materials in the braking system, such as pads and brake discs, by means of the braking fluid contained therein. The second function is to allow topping up with braking fluid during the first loading of the braking system and during the steps of bleeding.

[0007] In particular, the braking fluid reservoir often needs to be opened for bleeding and topping up operations during the test sessions of a racing motorcycle. These operations, carried out in the pits during hectic race weekends, often result in the introduction of impurities and dirt into the reservoir, which can cause problems to the braking system, and in severe cases, lead to braking system failure.

[0008] Attempts have been made to obviate this critical issue by filtering the braking fluid through a filter in order to reduce the impurities thereof. However, such a solution does not prevent impurities from entering the braking fluid reservoir because the reservoir remains open during the top-up operations.

[0009] A further critical issue of the prior art relates to the risk of emulsification of the braking fluid contained inside the reservoir. The emulsification of the braking fluid contained in the reservoir leads to the formation of small air bubbles which, if drawn back into the system and in particular into a master cylinder of the system, decrease the performance thereof.

[0010] Therefore, the need is felt to have a braking fluid reservoir such as to reduce the emulsification of the braking fluid and minimize the impact thereof on the brakingsystem.

[0011] Another critical issue with known reservoirs relates to the overall volume and size of the reservoirs themselves.

[0012] With particular reference to racing motorcycles, the need is felt to have reservoirs having the smallest as possible volume and size.

[0013] Solution

[0014] It is the object of the present invention to provide a braking fluid reservoir, and in particular a braking fluid reservoir for a racing motorcycle, adapted to solve at least some of the drawbacks highlighted in the prior art.

[0015] It is a particular object of the present invention to provide a braking fluid reservoir such as to prevent or minimize the contamination by impurities during the operations of topping up and bleeding the reservoir itself.

[0016] It is a further particular object of the present invention to provide a braking fluid reservoir such as to facilitate the operations of bleeding the reservoir itself.

[0017] It is a further particular object of the present invention to provide a braking fluid reservoir such as to prevent, limit or hinder the emulsification of the braking fluid contained therein.

[0018] It is a further particular object of the present invention to provide a braking fluid reservoir which prevents a depressurization therein, but at the same time avoids or hinders an undesired leakage of braking fluid.

[0019] It is a further particular object of the present invention to provide a braking fluid reservoir with small volume and size, and with a shape adaptable to the needs of the rider or the motorcycle manufacturer.

[0020] These and other objects are achieved by a braking fluid reservoir according to the independent claim.

[0021] The independent claims relate to preferred and advantageous embodiments of the present invention.

[0046] Description of some preferred embodiments

[0047] With reference to the figures, a braking fluid reservoir is indicated by reference numeral 1 .

[0048] The reservoir 1 comprises a receptacle 2 configured to contain braking fluid.

[0049] The receptacle 2 forms an inner compartment 3 for containing the braking fluid.

[0050] Moreover, the receptacle 2 comprises an outlet conduit 4 and an inlet conduit 5.

[0051] The outlet conduit 4 and the inlet conduit 5 are both fluidly connected to the inner compartment 3.

[0052] The outlet conduit 4 is connectable to a braking system. In particular, the braking fluid contained in the inner compartment 3 of the reservoir 1 is conveyable towards the braking system through the outlet conduit 4.

[0053] The inlet conduit 5 is configured to allow a top-up of braking fluid from the outside of the reservoir 1 to the inside of the inner compartment 3.

[0054] According to an aspect of the invention, the receptacle 2 is a one-piece body made by additive manufacturing.

[0055] "One-piece body" also means a "single body" or "single block", i.e., a body consisting of a single piece, thus exhibiting structural continuity.

[0056] "Additive manufacturing" also means an “additive production” or "3D printing" process.

[0057] Advantageously, a reservoir 1 thus configured, comprising a one-piece receptacle 2 made by additive manufacturing, does not require the presence of a cap, a membrane, and a diaphragm, required instead in the known reservoirs.

[0058] In particular, the absence of a screw-on cap allows topping up and bleeding the reservoir 1 in a controlled manner through the inlet conduit 5, thus avoiding the internal compartment 3 from being exposed to the external environment and thus to contamination by external agents.

[0059] Moreover, the absence of the dimensional constraints otherwise due to the cap, the membrane, and the diaphragm allows reducing the total size and volume of the reservoir 1 .

[0060] With added advantage, a reservoir 1 thus configured, free from cap, membrane and diaphragm, is assemblable with reduced time and complexity.

[0061] With added advantage, a reservoir 1 thus configured, to be topped up and bled without unscrewing or disassembling the receptacle 2, made as a one-piece body, simplifies and speeds up such bleeding and topping up processes, and favors the automation thereof by means of special machines.

[0062] With added advantage, a receptacle 2 made by additive manufacturing can substantially take any shape, thus adaptable to the needs of the rider and to thedimensional constraints of the motorcycle to which the reservoir 1 is connected. The possibility to make the receptacle 2 with substantially any shape allows for greater versatility in the installation of the reservoir 1 on the motorcycle, and for example allows for shapes and positioning aimed at favoring the aerodynamics of the motorcycle or reducing volumes and obstructions for the rider of the motorcycle.

[0063] According to an embodiment, the receptacle 2 is made of a polymer material.

[0064] According to an embodiment, the reservoir 1 comprises a valve 6.

[0065] The valve 6 is positioned inside the inlet conduit 5. The valve 6 is configured to adjust a flow of braking fluid through the inlet conduit 5.

[0066] Advantageously, a reservoir 1 thus configured allows for a controlled loading of braking fluid through the valve 6 positioned in the inlet conduit 5, minimizing any contamination of the braking fluid.

[0067] According to an embodiment, the valve 6 is a proportioning valve, a quickconnection valve, or a Staubli type valve. According to an embodiment, the valve 6 comprises a filter. The filter is positioned inside the valve 6, in particular inside the inlet conduit 5, and is configured to filter possible contaminations from the braking fluid entering the reservoir 1 through the inlet conduit 5.

[0068] Advantageously, such a type of valve 6 facilitates the braking fluid loading and bleeding operations.

[0069] The receptacle 2 defines an outer surface 7.

[0070] According to an embodiment, the receptacle 2 comprises a lattice core 8.

[0071] The lattice core 8 defines the inner compartment 3 of the receptacle 2.

[0072] Specifically, the lattice core 8 defines a plurality of cells 9, which together form the inner compartment 3.

[0073] Lattice core 8 means a fragmented or segmented or tessellated structure, which defines a plurality of cells 9 fluidly connected to one another. Advantageously, such a lattice core 8 is easily and quickly made by means of additive manufacturing techniques. Moreover, by means of additive manufacturing techniques it is possible to give the lattice core 8 different shapes, structures, and sizes.

[0074] According to an embodiment, the lattice core 8 defines at least four cells 9, or at least ten cells 9, or at least fifty cells 9, or at least one hundred cells 9.

[0075] Advantageously, a reservoir 1 thus configured reduces the emulsification of braking fluid and minimizes the impact thereof on the braking system. Indeed, the fragmentation of the inner compartment 3 by means of the lattice core 8 causes a smallamount of braking fluid to be contained within each cell 9 of the lattice core, which in the case of emulsification, would locally generate a small amount of air that would thus have less impact on the braking system. Moreover, this allows directly connecting the reservoir 1 thus configured to a master cylinder of the braking system, thus avoiding the interposition of components adapted to reduce or filter air otherwise entering the master cylinder.

[0076] With added advantage, if the braking fluid contained in the inner compartment 3 is shaken, the lattice structure of the inner compartment 3 formed by the lattice core 8 limits the amount of braking fluid affected by the shaking, thus hindering a rise of the whole braking fluid towards an outer vent hole 15 and / or towards the inlet conduit 5 of the reservoir 1 .

[0077] With added advantage, the lattice structure of the lattice core 8 hinders the possible passage of impurities from outside the reservoir 1 to the outlet conduit 4, and thus to a master cylinder connectable to the reservoir 1 , since the lattice structure acts as a filter for impurities.

[0078] According to an embodiment, the lattice core 8 forms a substantially regular structure. Therefore, the cells 9 have a substantially uniform and repeated shape.

[0079] According to an embodiment, the lattice core 8 forms a honeycomb structure.

[0080] According to an embodiment, the lattice core 8 is externally delimited by the outer surface 7 of the receptacle 2.

[0081] The outlet conduit 4 and the inlet conduit 5 are fluidly connected to the lattice core 8.

[0082] According to an embodiment, the receptacle 2 forms an outer vent hole 15.

[0083] The outer vent hole 15 fluidly communicates with the inner compartment 3.

[0084] Moreover, the outer vent hole 15 leads onto the outer surface 7 of the receptacle 2.

[0085] Specifically, the outer vent hole 15 is distinct from the outlet conduit 4 and the inlet conduit 5.

[0086] Advantageously, by means of the outer vent hole 15 the generation of negative pressures inside the inner compartment 3 of the reservoir 1 is avoided.

[0087] According to an embodiment, the outer vent hole 15 is made on an upper surface 12 of the outer surface 7 of the receptacle 2. "Upper surface 12" means a portion of the outer surface 7 facing upwards under operating conditions, i.e., when the reservoir 1 is positioned connected to the motorcycle.

[0088] Advantageously, such a positioning further hinders a possible leakage of braking fluid from the reservoir 1 , and simultaneously allows avoiding the generation of negative pressures within the inner compartment 3 of the reservoir 1 .

[0089] According to an embodiment, the receptacle 2 comprises a vent conduit 16.

[0090] The vent conduit 16 extends into the receptacle 2.

[0091] The vent conduit 16 extends between the outer vent hole 15 and an opposite inner vent hole 17, which leads into the inner compartment 3.

[0092] The vent conduit 16 thus makes a fluid connection between the outside of the receptacle 2, by means of the outer vent hole 15, and the inner compartment 3, by means of the inner vent hole 17.

[0093] According to an embodiment, the vent conduit 16 is positioned upstream of the lattice core 8, with respect to the outer vent hole 15.

[0094] Specifically, the inner vent hole 17 faces the lattice core 8.

[0095] According to an embodiment, the vent conduit 16 is positioned at the upper surface 12 of the outer surface 7.

[0096] According to an embodiment, the vent conduit 16 has a curvilinear or tortuous shape.

[0097] A "curvilinear" shape means a shape having at least one curve or totally defined by a curve, such as a curve with a constant radius. "Tortuous" shape means a shape that can include a straight-line portion, but that does not consistently follow a straight line and bends at one or more points, exhibiting curves or elbows.

[0098] Advantageously, the vent conduit 16 thus configured, comprising at least one curvilinear or tortuous portion, or being totally curvilinear or tortuous, hinders a possible rise of the braking fluid contained in the inner compartment 3 towards the outer vent hole 15, thus preventing an undesired leakage thereof from the reservoir 1 .

[0099] According to an embodiment, the vent conduit 16 either comprises at least one helix-shaped portion or is completely helix-shaped. Preferably, the helix is wound inside the receptacle 2, substantially coaxial to the receptacle 2.

[0100] According to an embodiment, the vent conduit 16 comprises at least one spiral portion or is completely spiral-shaped. Preferably, the spiral is wound inside the receptacle 2, substantially coaxial to the receptacle 2.

[0101] Advantageously, the vent conduit 16 in the shape of a helix or spiral is particularly suitable for a front reservoir 1 of a motorcycle. Such shapes are also easily and quickly made by means of additive manufacturing techniques.

[0102] According to an embodiment, the vent conduit 16 comprises at least one serpentine-shaped portion or is completely shaped like a serpentine.

[0103] Advantageously, the serpentine-shaped vent conduit 16 is particularly suitable for a rear reservoir 1 of a motorcycle. Such a shape is also easily and quickly made by means of additive manufacturing techniques.

[0104] According to an embodiment, the serpentine-shaped vent conduit 16 at least partially, preferably entirely extends on an inclined plane with respect to the outlet conduit 4.

[0105] According to an embodiment, the vent conduit 16 comprises an obstruction conduit 18. The obstruction conduit 18 is configured to form an irregularity or discontinuity in the shape of the vent conduit 16 at which it is positioned.

[0106] According to a embodiment, the obstruction conduit 18 is siphon-shaped.

[0107] Siphon-shaped obstruction conduit 18 means a portion of the vent conduit 16 having a "U" shape or more generally defining a lower or upper elbow conduit segment.

[0108] According to an embodiment, the obstruction conduit 18 is S-shaped.

[0109] Advantageously, the obstruction conduit 18 avoids or however further hinders a possible leakage of braking fluid from the reservoir 1 through the outer vent hole 15.

[0110] According to an embodiment, the preferably siphon-shaped obstruction conduit 18 is positioned at the outer vent hole 15.

[0111] According to an embodiment, the preferably siphon-shaped obstruction conduit 18 is positioned at the outer vent hole 15, upstream of the vent conduit 16 with respect to the outer vent hole 15.

[0112] Advantageously, by means of such a configuration, even if some of the braking fluid rises up the vent conduit 16 following the abrupt changes in direction and bends taken by the motorcycle on which the reservoir 1 is installed, the possibility of the braking fluid reaching the outer vent hole 15 or stagnating inside the obstruction conduit 18 is minimized.

[0113] According to an embodiment, the serpentine-shaped vent conduit 16 comprises an obstruction conduit 18 positioned along the vent conduit 16. Preferably, the obstruction conduit 18 positioned along the vent conduit 16 is S-shaped or siphonshaped.

[0114] Advantageously, such a configuration of the reservoir 1 , comprising the obstruction conduit 18 and the vent conduit 16 as previously described, allows air to enter the inner compartment 3 required to avoid generating a negative pressure therein, and simultaneously avoids or greatly hinders a possible undesired leakage of braking fluid.

[0115] According to an embodiment, the outer surface 7 of the receptacle 2 is substantially cylindrical in shape.

[0116] According to an embodiment, the receptacle 2 defines at least one coupling hole 10. The coupling hole 10 extends through the receptacle 2.

[0117] The coupling hole 10 is delimited by a hole surface 11 .

[0118] According to this embodiment, the receptacle 2 is delimited by an outer surface 7 and the hole surface 11 of the coupling hole 10.

[0119] According to an embodiment, the inner compartment 3 is delimited by the outer surface 7 and the hole surface 11 of the coupling hole 10.

[0120] According to an embodiment, the lattice core 8 is delimited by the outer surface 7 and the hole surface 11 of the coupling hole 10.

[0121] Advantageously, a reservoir 1 thus configured has a smaller volume and greater installation versatility. Indeed, the reservoir 1 thus configured is mountable on a fork of a motorcycle, in particular with the fork inserted through the coupling hole 10 of the reservoir 1. Moreover, the reservoir 1 thus configured is mountable around the halfhandlebar of the motorcycle by inserting the through half-handlebar through the coupling hole 10. With added advantage, a reservoir 1 thus configured is mountable on the motorcycle without the use of additional fasteners and brackets, thus having reduced volumes and reduced installation complexity.

[0125] Advantageously, the receptacle 2, delimited by the outer 7, inner 10, upper 12, and lower 13 surfaces, is made in a one-piece body, or single body, by additive manufacturing.

[0126] According to an embodiment, the upper surface 12 and the lower surface 13 are transverse to the outer surface 7.

[0127] According to an embodiment, the receptacle 2 forms a peripheral wall 19 anda bottom wall 20. Preferably, the peripheral wall 19 is substantially transverse to the bottom wall 20.

Advantageously, such a configuration is particularly suitable for a rear reservoir of a motorcycle. With added advantage, a reservoir 1 thus configured can incorporate an external guard towards the rider's boot, effectively eliminating the hindrance of the reservoir 1 .

[0130] According to an embodiment, the outlet conduit 4 is configured to be directly or indirectly connectable to a master cylinder of a braking system to convey the braking fluid contained in the reservoir 1 towards the master cylinder of the braking system.

[0131] According to an embodiment, the outlet conduit 4 extends in a direction transverse to the bottom wall 20.

[0132] According to an embodiment, the outlet conduit 4 comprises snap connection means 14.
