AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Current wireless communication protocols, particularly in 5G NR, lack efficient mechanisms for user equipment (UE) to obtain and update artificial intelligence (AI) models and related data when in RRC idle or inactive states, leading to inefficiencies in energy consumption and latency.

Method used

The method involves a UE determining the need for an AI model and sending an AI indicator to the network, even when in RRC idle or inactive states, to receive the necessary AI model or training dataset through specific protocols like small-data transfer (SDT) within the random access channel (RACH) procedure.

Benefits of technology

This approach enables efficient and timely AI model updates and data transfers for UEs in various states, optimizing energy usage and reducing latency by allowing AI-related data exchange without requiring the UE to transition to an RRC connected state.

Abstract

In an aspect, a method is performed by user equipment (UE) that is in communication with a network. The method includes determining that an artificial intelligence (AI) model is to be used by the UE to perform an AI task. In response to the UE being in a radio resource control (RRC) idle or RRC inactive state, the UE sends to the network, an AI indicator that is associated with the AI model. The UE receives from the network, the AI model or a training dataset that is associated with the AI model.

[0035] Methods and apparatus are described in the present disclosure that may facilitate communication of AI-related data between a UE and network in a new radio (NR) environment. Various details are described that may support the communication of AI-related data. It will be apparent, however, to one skilled in the art, that aspects of the present disclosure may be practiced without some of these specific details. In some instances, well-known components, structures, and techniques have not been shown in detail in order not to obscure the understanding of this description.

[0036] Reference in the specification to “some aspects” or “an aspect” means that a particular feature, structure, or characteristic described in connection with the aspect can be included in at least one aspect of the disclosure. The appearances of the phrase “in some aspects” in various places in the specification do not necessarily all refer to the same aspect.

[0037] In the following description and claims, the terms “coupled” and “connected, ” along with their derivatives, may be used. “Coupled” is used to indicate that two or more elements, which may or may not be in direct physical or electrical contact with each other, co-operate or interact with each other. “Connected” is used to indicate the establishment of communication between two or more elements that are coupled with each other.

[0038] The processes depicted in the figures that follow may be performed by processing logic that comprises hardware (e.g., circuitry, dedicated logic, etc. ) , software (such as is run on a general-purpose computer system or a dedicated machine) , or a combination of both. Although the processes are described below in terms of some sequential operations, it should be  appreciated that some of the operations described may be performed in different order. Moreover, some operations may be performed in parallel rather than sequentially.

[0039] The terms “server, ” “client, ” and “device” are intended to refer generally to data processing systems rather than specifically to a particular form factor for the server, client, and / or device.

[0040] FIG. 1 illustrates a simplified example wireless communication system, according to some aspects. It is noted that the system of FIG. 1 is merely one example of a possible system, and that features of this disclosure may be implemented in any of various systems, as desired.

[0041] As shown, the example wireless communication system includes a base station 102A which communicates over a transmission medium with one or more user devices 106A, 106B, etc., through 106N. Each of the user devices may be referred to as a “user equipment” (UE) .

[0042] The base station (BS) 102A may be a base transceiver station (BTS) or cell site (a“cellular base station” ) and may include hardware that enables wireless communication with the UEs 106A through 106N.

[0043] The communication area (or coverage area) of the base station may be referred to as a “cell. ” The base station 102A and the UEs 106 may be configured to communicate over the transmission medium using any of various radio access technologies (RATs) , also referred to as wireless communication technologies, or telecommunication standards, such as GSM, UMTS (associated with, for example, WCDMA or TD-SCDMA air interfaces) , LTE, LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) , 5G new radio (5G NR) , HSPA, 3GPP2 CDMA2000 (e.g., 1xRTT, 1xEV-DO, HRPD, eHRPD) , etc. Note that if the base station 102A is implemented in the context of LTE, it may alternately be referred to as an ‘eNodeB’ or ‘eNB’ . Note that if the base station 102A is implemented in the context of 5G NR, it may alternately be referred to as ‘gNodeB’ or ‘gNB’ .

[0044] As shown, the base station 102A may also be equipped to communicate with a network 100 (e.g., a core network of a cellular service provider, a telecommunication network such as a public switched telephone network (PSTN) , and / or the Internet, among various possibilities) . Thus, the base station 102A may facilitate communication between the user devices and / or between the user devices and the network 100. In particular, the cellular base station 102A may provide UEs 106 with various telecommunication capabilities, such as voice, SMS and / or data services.

[0045] Base station 102A and other similar base stations (such as base stations 102B ... 102N) operating according to the same or a different cellular communication standard may thus be provided as a network of cells, which may provide continuous or nearly continuous overlapping service to UEs 106A-N and similar devices over a geographic area via one or more cellular communication standards.

[0046] Thus, while base station 102A may act as a “serving cell” for UEs 106A-N as illustrated in FIG. 1, each UE 106 may also be capable of receiving signals from (and possibly within communication range of) one or more other cells (which might be provided by base stations 102B-N and / or any other base stations) , which may be referred to as “neighboring cells” . Such cells may also be capable of facilitating communication between user devices and / or between user devices and the network 100. Such cells may include “macro” cells, “micro” cells, “pico” cells, and / or cells which provide any of various other granularities of service area size. For example, base stations 102A-B illustrated in FIG. 1 might be macro cells, while base station 102N might be a micro cell. Other configurations are also possible.

[0047] In some aspects, base station 102A may be a next generation base station, e.g., a 5G New Radio (5G NR) base station, or “gNB” . In some aspects, a gNB may be connected to a legacy evolved packet core (EPC) network and / or to a NR core (NRC) network. In addition, a gNB cell may include one or more transition and reception points (TRPs) . In addition, a UE capable of operating according to 5G NR may be connected to one or more TRPs within one or more gNBs.

[0048] Note that a UE 106 may be capable of communicating using multiple wireless communication standards. For example, the UE 106 may be configured to communicate using a wireless networking (e.g., Wi-Fi) and / or peer-to-peer wireless communication protocol (e.g., Bluetooth, Wi-Fi peer-to-peer, etc. ) in addition to at least one cellular communication protocol (e.g., GSM, UMTS (associated with, for example, WCDMA or TD-SCDMA air interfaces) , LTE, LTE-A, 5G NR, HSPA, 3GPP2 CDMA2000 (e.g., 1xRTT, 1xEV-DO, HRPD, eHRPD) , etc. ) . The UE 106 may also or alternatively be configured to communicate using one or more global navigational satellite systems (GNSS, e.g., GPS or GLONASS) , one or more mobile television broadcasting standards (e.g., ATSC-M / H or DVB-H) , and / or any other wireless communication protocol, if desired. Other combinations of wireless communication standards (including more than two wireless communication standards) are also possible.

[0049] FIG. 2 illustrates UE 106A that can be in communication with a base station 102 through uplink and downlink communications, according to some aspects. The UEs may each be a device with cellular communication capability such as a mobile phone, a hand-held device, a computer or a tablet, or virtually any type of wireless device.

[0050] The UE may include a processor that is configured to execute program instructions stored in memory. The UE may perform any of the method aspects described herein by executing such stored instructions. Alternatively, or in addition, the UE may include a programmable hardware element such as an FPGA (field-programmable gate array) that is configured to perform any of the method aspects described herein, or any portion of any of the method aspects described herein.

[0051] The UE may include one or more antennas for communicating using one or more wireless communication protocols or technologies. In some aspects, the UE may be configured to communicate using, for example, CDMA2000 (1xRTT / 1xEV-DO / HRPD / eHRPD) or LTE using a single shared radio and / or GSM or LTE using the single shared radio. The shared radio may couple to a single antenna, or may couple to multiple antennas (e.g., for MIMO) for performing wireless communications. In general, a radio may include any combination of a baseband processor, analog RF signal processing circuitry (e.g., including filters, mixers, oscillators, amplifiers, etc. ) , or digital processing circuitry (e.g., for digital modulation as well as other digital processing) . Similarly, the radio may implement one or more receive and transmit chains using the aforementioned hardware. For example, the UE 106 may share one or more parts of a receive and / or transmit chain between multiple wireless communication technologies, such as those discussed above.

[0052] In some aspects, the UE may include separate transmit and / or receive chains (e.g., including separate antennas and other radio components) for each wireless communication protocol with which it is configured to communicate. As a further possibility, the UE may include one or more radios which are shared between multiple wireless communication protocols, and one or more radios which are used exclusively by a single wireless communication protocol. For example, the UE might include a shared radio for communicating using either of LTE or 5G NR (or LTE or 1xRTTor LTE or GSM) , and separate radios for communicating using each of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Other configurations are also possible.

[0053] FIG. 3 illustrates an example simplified block diagram of a communication device 106, according to some aspects. It is noted that the block diagram of the communication device of FIG. 3 is only one example of a possible communication device. According to aspects, communication device 106 may be a UE device, a mobile device or mobile station, a wireless device or wireless station, a desktop computer or computing device, a mobile computing device (e.g., a laptop, notebook, or portable computing device) , a tablet and / or a combination of devices, among other devices. As shown, the communication device 106 may include a set of components 300 configured to perform core functions. For example, this set of components may be implemented as a system on chip (SOC) , which may include portions for various purposes. Alternatively, this set of components 300 may be implemented as separate components or groups of components for the various purposes. The set of components 300 may be coupled (e.g., communicatively; directly or indirectly) to various other circuits of the communication device 106.

[0065] The base station 102 may include at least one network port 470. The network port 470 may be configured to couple to a telephone network and provide a plurality of devices, such as UE devices 106, access to the telephone network as described above in FIGS. 1 and 2.

[0066] The network port 470 (or an additional network port) may also or alternatively be configured to couple to a cellular network, e.g., a core network of a cellular service provider. The core network may provide mobility related services and / or other services to a plurality of devices, such as UE devices 106. In some cases, the network port 470 may couple to a telephone network via the core network, and / or the core network may provide a telephone network (e.g., among other UE devices serviced by the cellular service provider) .

[0067] In some aspects, base station 102 may be a next generation base station, e.g., a 5G New Radio (5G NR) base station, or “gNB” . In such aspects, base station 102 may be connected to a legacy evolved packet core (EPC) network and / or to a NR core (NRC) network. In addition, base station 102 may be considered a 5G NR cell and may include one or more transition and reception points (TRPs) . In addition, a UE capable of operating according to 5G NR may be  connected to one or more TRPs within one or more gNBs. In some aspects, the base station can operate in 5G NR-U mode.

[0068] The base station 102 may include at least one antenna 434, and possibly multiple antennas. The at least one antenna 434 may be configured to operate as a wireless transceiver and may be further configured to communicate with UE devices 106 via radio 430. The antenna 434 communicates with the radio 430 via communication chain 432. Communication chain 432 may be a receive chain, a transmit chain or both. The radio 430 may be configured to communicate via various wireless communication standards, including, but not limited to, 5G NR, 5G NR-U, LTE, LTE-A, GSM, UMTS, CDMA2000, Wi-Fi, etc.

[0069] The base station 102 may be configured to communicate wirelessly using multiple wireless communication standards. In some instances, the base station 102 may include multiple radios, which may enable the base station 102 to communicate according to multiple wireless communication technologies. For example, as one possibility, the base station 102 may include an LTE radio for performing communication according to LTE as well as a 5G NR radio for performing communication according to 5G NR and 5G NR-U. In such a case, the base station 102 may be capable of operating as both an LTE base station and a 5G NR base station. As another possibility, the base station 102 may include a multi-mode radio which is capable of performing communications according to any of multiple wireless communication technologies (e.g., 5G NR and Wi-Fi, LTE and Wi-Fi, LTE and UMTS, LTE and CDMA2000, UMTS and GSM, etc. ) .

[0070] As described further subsequently herein, the BS 102 may include hardware and software components for implementing or supporting implementation of features described herein. The processor 404 of the base station 102 may be configured to implement or support implementation of part or all of the methods described herein, e.g., by executing program instructions stored on a memory medium (e.g., a non-transitory computer-readable memory medium) . Alternatively, the processor 404 may be configured as a programmable hardware element, such as an FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) , or as an ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) , or a combination thereof. Alternatively (or in addition) the processor 404 of the BS 102, in conjunction with one or more of the other components 430, 432, 434, 440, 450, 460, 470 may be configured to implement or support implementation of part or all of the features described herein.

[0071] In addition, as described herein, processor (s) 404 may be comprised of one or more processing elements. In other words, one or more processing elements may be included in processor (s) 404. Thus, processor (s) 404 may include one or more integrated circuits (ICs) that are configured to perform the functions of processor (s) 404. In addition, each integrated circuit may include circuitry (e.g., first circuitry, second circuitry, etc. ) configured to perform the functions of processor (s) 404.

[0072] Further, as described herein, radio 430 may be comprised of one or more processing elements. In other words, one or more processing elements may be included in radio 430. Thus, radio 430 may include one or more integrated circuits (ICs) that are configured to perform the functions of radio 430. In addition, each integrated circuit may include circuitry (e.g., first circuitry, second circuitry, etc. ) configured to perform the functions of radio 430.

[0073] FIG. 5 illustrates an example simplified block diagram of cellular communication circuitry, according to some aspects. It is noted that the block diagram of the cellular communication circuitry of FIG. 5 is only one example of a possible cellular communication circuit. According to aspects, cellular communication circuitry 330 may be included in a communication device, such as communication device 106 described above. As noted above, communication device 106 may be a user equipment (UE) device, a mobile device or mobile station, a wireless device or wireless station, a desktop computer or computing device, a mobile computing device (e.g., a laptop, notebook, or portable computing device) , a tablet and / or a combination of devices, among other devices.

[0074] The cellular communication circuitry 330 may couple (e.g., communicatively; directly or indirectly) to one or more antennas, such as antennas 335 a-b and 336 as shown (in FIG. 3) . In some aspects, cellular communication circuitry 330 may include dedicated receive chains (including and / or coupled to, e.g., communicatively; directly or indirectly. dedicated processors and / or radios) for multiple RATs (e.g., a first receive chain for LTE and a second receive chain for 5G NR) . For example, as shown in FIG. 5, cellular communication circuitry 330 may include a modem 510 and a modem 520. Modem 510 may be configured for communications according to a first RAT, e.g., such as LTE or LTE-A, and modem 520 may be configured for communications according to a second RAT, e.g., such as 5G NR.

[0075] As shown, modem 510 may include one or more processors 512 and a memory 516 in communication with processors 512. Modem 510 may be in communication with a radio frequency (RF) front end 530. RF front end 530 may include circuitry for transmitting and receiving radio signals. For example, RF front end 530 may include receive circuitry (RX) 532 and transmit circuitry (TX) 534. In some aspects, receive circuitry 532 may be in communication with downlink (DL) front end 550, which may include circuitry for receiving radio signals via antenna 335a.

[0076] Similarly, modem 520 may include one or more processors 522 and a memory 526 in communication with processors 522. Modem 520 may be in communication with an RF front end 540. RF front end 540 may include circuitry for transmitting and receiving radio signals. For example, RF front end 540 may include receive circuitry 542 and transmit circuitry 544. In some aspects, receive circuitry 542 may be in communication with DL front end 560, which may include circuitry for receiving radio signals via antenna 335b.

[0077] In some aspects, a switch 570 may couple transmit circuitry 534 to uplink (UL) front end 572. In addition, switch 570 may couple transmit circuitry 544 to UL front end 572. UL front end 572 may include circuitry for transmitting radio signals via antenna 336. Thus, when cellular communication circuitry 330 receives instructions to transmit according to the first RAT (e.g., as supported via modem 510) , switch 570 may be switched to a first state that allows modem 510 to transmit signals according to the first RAT (e.g., via a transmit chain that includes transmit circuitry 534 and UL front end 572) . Similarly, when cellular communication circuitry 330 receives instructions to transmit according to the second RAT (e.g., as supported via modem 520) , switch 570 may be switched to a second state that allows modem 520 to transmit signals according to the second RAT (e.g., via a transmit chain that includes transmit circuitry 544 and UL front end 572) .

[0078] As described herein, the modem 510 may include hardware and software components for implementing the above features or for determining a physical downlink shared channel scheduling resource for a user equipment device and a base station, as well as the various other techniques described herein. The processors 512 may be configured to implement part or all of the features described herein, e.g., by executing program instructions stored on a memory medium (e.g., a non-transitory computer-readable memory medium) . Alternatively (or in  addition) , processor 512 may be configured as a programmable hardware element, such as an FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) , or as an ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) . Alternatively (or in addition) the processor 512, in conjunction with one or more of the other components 530, 532, 534, 550, 570, 572, 335 and 336 may be configured to implement part or all of the features described herein.

[0079] In addition, as described herein, processors 512 may include one or more processing elements. Thus, processors 512 may include one or more integrated circuits (ICs) that are configured to perform the functions of processors 512. In addition, each integrated circuit may include circuitry (e.g., first circuitry, second circuitry, etc. ) configured to perform the functions of processors 512.

[0080] As described herein, the modem 520 may include hardware and software components for implementing the above features for determining a physical downlink shared channel scheduling resource for a user equipment device and a base station, as well as the various other techniques described herein. The processors 522 may be configured to implement part or all of the features described herein, e.g., by executing program instructions stored on a memory medium (e.g., a non-transitory computer-readable memory medium) . Alternatively (or in addition) , processor 522 may be configured as a programmable hardware element, such as an FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) , or as an ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) . Alternatively (or in addition) the processor 522, in conjunction with one or more of the other components 540, 542, 544, 550, 570, 572, 335 and 336 may be configured to implement part or all of the features described herein.

[0081] In addition, as described herein, processors 522 may include one or more processing elements. Thus, processors 522 may include one or more integrated circuits (ICs) that are configured to perform the functions of processors 522. In addition, each integrated circuit may include circuitry (e.g., first circuitry, second circuitry, etc. ) configured to perform the functions of processors 522.

[0082] 5G supports multi-antenna transmission, beam-forming, and simultaneous transmission from multiple geographically separates sites. Channels of different antenna ports that are relevant for a UE may differ, for example, in terms of radio channel properties. QCL antenna port may be geographically separated.

[0083] 5G physical channels provide flexible communication between the 5G base stations and the UEs. 5G NR has specified the physical channels for 5G networks that can be used either for Downlink or Uplink communication. 5G NR physical channels used for uplink communication includes the physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) , the physical uplink control channel (PUCCH) , and the physical random-access channel (PRACH) . Uplink signals such as DM-RS, PT-RS, and SRS are also supported. 5G NR supports the simultaneous transmission on PUSCH and PUCCH. PUSCH is typically used to carry the user data and optionally, can carry uplink control information (UCI) .

[0084] PDSCH stands for Physical Downlink Shared Channel and is a channel used to deliver data from the base station (e.g., gNb) to the user equipment (UE) in the downlink direction. PDSCH supports high data rates and low latency for a wide range of applications and services. It uses advanced modulation and coding schemes, as well as multiple antenna techniques such as MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) , to maximize spectral efficiency and improve the overall performance of the network. PDSCH is also used in conjunction with other channels, such as the Physical Downlink Control Channel (PDCCH) and Physical Hybrid ARQ Indicator Channel (PHICH) , to support features such as channel state information reporting, scheduling and retransmission of data packets, and HARQ (Hybrid Automatic Repeat Request) feedback. PDSCH enables the delivery of high-speed data and low-latency services to users in the downlink direction, and supports a range of advanced features and capabilities that promote efficient and reliable operation of the network.

[0085] Radio Resource Control (RRC) is a protocol layer that exists between the radio access network (RAN) and the core network in 5G. RRC is used to manage radio resources, including the establishment, maintenance, and release of radio connections between the user equipment (UE) and the base station. The RRC protocol performs several essential functions including connection establishment, connection maintenance, and connection release. RRC handles the procedures for establishing a connection between the UE and the base station. This includes procedures such as random access, initial cell search, and authentication. Once a connection is established, RRC is responsible for maintaining the connection and managing the radio resources efficiently. It ensures the appropriate quality of service (QoS) for the UE and handles mobility-related events, such as handovers between cells or handovers between different types  of 5G networks (e.g., from 5G New Radio to 5G Core) . When the UE no longer needs the connection or if there are other reasons for releasing it, RRC handles the procedures for releasing the connection and freeing up the associated radio resources. The RRC protocol operates on top of the physical layer and the medium access control (MAC) layer in the protocol stack. It communicates with other layers in the 5G system, such as the packet data convergence protocol (PDCP) , radio link control (RLC) , and the user plane, to support efficient and reliable communication between the UE and the network.

[0086] RRC protocol defines several states that a UE can be in. These states determine the level of connectivity and resource allocation between the UE and the network. RRC states in 5G include RRC idle (RRC_IDLE) , RRC inactive (RRC_INACTIVE) , and RRC connected (RRC_CONNECTED) .

[0087] In RRC Idle (RRC_IDLE) state, the UE is not actively connected to the network. It is not assigned any dedicated resources, and its radio interface is deactivated. The UE periodically monitors system information broadcasts from the network to stay informed about available cells and other relevant network parameters. When the UE needs to establish a connection or perform a service request, it transitions to a RRC connected state.

[0088] When the UE is in RRC inactive (RRC_INACTIVE) state, it has limited 5G resources allocated and uses primarily the LTE network for connectivity. The UE can quickly transition to the RRC_CONNECTED state when necessary.

[0089] RRC Connected (RRC_CONNECTED) state represents an active connection between the UE and the network. RRC connected can be further divided into sub-states, including:

[0090] a. RRC_Connected_Init: The initial sub-state where the UE has just established an RRC connection with the network.

[0091] b. RRC_Connected: The UE is in a stable connected state, and it can exchange data and signaling with the network. It can receive and transmit data, perform handovers, and execute various procedures as required.

[0092] c. RRC_Connected_Reconfiguring: The UE is undergoing a reconfiguration of its RRC connection parameters, such as changing the radio bearer configuration or updating network configuration information.

[0093] d. RRC_Connected_Suspend: The UE temporarily suspends its RRC connection while maintaining radio resources for a specified period. It is typically used in power-saving scenarios to conserve energy.

[0094] e. RRC_Connected_Release: The UE is releasing its RRC connection, terminating the active connection with the network.

[0095] Each RRC state has its own specific behaviors performed by the UE and network which results in specific power consumption characteristics and signaling procedures for the state (or sub-state) . The network and the UE manage state transitions based on numerous factors such as network conditions, service requirements, mobility, and power optimization. As discussed, there may be additional state transition management to account for AI and ML needs.

[0096] In the present disclosure, unless otherwise indicated, the terms artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) may be interchangeable, and an ML model may refer to an AI model, and vice versa.

[0097] Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to the development of computer systems that can perform tasks that typically require human intelligence. These systems are designed to simulate human cognitive abilities, such as learning, reasoning, problem-solving, and perception. AI encompasses various subfields, including machine learning, natural language processing, computer vision, and robotics.

[0098] Machine learning is a subset of artificial intelligence (AI) that focuses on developing algorithms and models that allow computer systems to learn and improve from data without being explicitly programmed. In machine learning, instead of relying on explicit instructions, the system learns patterns and relationships from the available data and uses that knowledge to make predictions or take actions. An AI model may refer to an algorithm and its trained parameters that take an input and generate an output based on the input. Different models may include different algorithms. In some aspects described, the AI or ML model may include an artificial neural network.

[0099] The process of machine learning may involve training a model using a dataset, which consists of input data and corresponding output labels or desired outcomes. The model learns from this training data by identifying patterns, correlations, and statistical relationships. Once trained, the model can then be used to make predictions or decisions on new, unseen data.

[0100] There are various types of machine learning algorithms, including supervised learning, unsupervised learning, and reinforcement learning. Supervised learning involves providing the model with labeled training data, where the input and output pairs are explicitly provided. Unsupervised learning involves discovering patterns or structures in unlabeled data. Reinforcement learning involves training an agent to interact with an environment and learn optimal actions based on receiving rewards or penalties.

[0101] An AI model may include an artificial neural network (ANN) . An ANN machine learning algorithm may consist of interconnected artificial neurons, also called nodes or units, organized into layers. Each node receives one or more inputs, performs a mathematical operation on these inputs, and produces an output. These inputs may be weighted, and the weights may dictate the strength or importance of each input. The outputs from the nodes in one layer become inputs to the nodes in the next layer, forming a network of interconnected nodes. An artificial neural network may include an input layer, one or more hidden layers, and an output layer. The input layer receives the initial data or features, the hidden layers perform computations on the inputs, and the output layer produces the final output or prediction. During training, the weights of the connections between nodes are adjusted to optimize the neural network's performance on a specific task. This adjustment is done using a process called backpropagation, which calculates the network's error with respect to the weights and updates those weights to reduce the error. The objective of training is to adjust those weights to minimize the difference between the network's output and the desired output for a given input. Once the difference satisfies a threshold, the neural network may be said to be trained. More generally, an AI model may be trained in such a manner to minimize the difference between the model's output and a desired output given training data. Once trained, the AI model may be used for inferencing -by providing inputs and using the AI model to infer a desired output.

[0102] AI and ML techniques are deemed to be an integral part of future wireless networks such as 5G-Advanced and 6G. In particular, it is envisioned that AI may play a role for Optimization of Network Functionalities and AI-as-a-Service (AIaaS) .

[0103] With regard to Optimization of Network Functionalities, AI models that are trained by the AI agent (s) in a network environment (e.g., a 5G or 6G platform) may be used to facilitate certain decision making in a network (e.g., a radio access network, UE and Core network) . A UE  may use an AI model to infer outputs that are used in various network tasks such as beam management, CSI enhancement, Positioning, Resource allocation, Network management (OAM) , Route Selection, Energy Saving, Load Balancing, or other operations performed by UE. For example, the UE may provide input to a trained AI model to obtain an output, and based on the output, select an appropriate beam to use for uplink or downlink, or to manage processes in view of current energy storage levels.

[0104] With regard to AI-as-a-Service (AIaaS) , AI services (e.g., inferencing) can be consumed by applications initiated or being executed at either user or network side, and the service provider can be any AI agent reachable in the network, including the UE. Some of the inferencing use-cases of the AI models may include: one-shot object recognition at the UE based on AI model split, with model split executed at another network entity, AI model download from network / edge to the UE for video recognition in an AR display / gaming session, or federated learning based services with multiple UEs participating in a global AI training in a given session, i.e., multi-view object recognition.

[0105] In the disclosure, features are described that support UE performance of AI computing tasks including AI model training, AI inferencing, or both. To perform AI computing tasks, the UE may need to obtain data or information from another entity in the network (e.g., the gNB, or another UE) .

[0106] For example, for AI model training, the UE may need to get new or updated training datasets from the network or another UE. For AI inferencing based on trained models, the UE may need to obtain an updated or refined AI model (or a respective model ID) from the network or other UE (s) .

[0107] When the UE is operating in RRC-CONNECTED state, obtaining the AI-related data (e.g., the AI model, the training dataset, the AI model ID, the training dataset ID, or a combination thereof) may be performed in a direct manner. The UE may receive the AI model or training dataset or a respective ID that is required for a respective AI task (e.g., inferencing or training) through one or more operations. For example, the dataset, the AI model, or a respective ID may be communicated by the network to the UE through the application layer within a standard application layer session. The session may be dedicated for the AI-related data.

[0108] When the UE is in RRC-IDLE / INACTIVE state, the mechanism in which a UE may obtain such AI-related data is unresolved. The UE should first return to RRC-CONNECTED state in order to retrieve the connectivity and receive the information required for AI / ML computing, however, currently the procedure for RRC connection establishment is not based on the need of AI / ML computing -there is no RRC establishment based on UE transitioning into AI / ML model training or inference stages. Instead, under current protocols, the transition to RRC connected state can be triggered by paging from the network (e.g., some DL data intended to the UE becomes available) , or by arrival of UL data at the UE buffer. The UE initializes the random access procedures to establish the necessary UL and DL timing and identification protocols. Thus, there is an absence of solutions for the UE to obtain AI-related data when not in RRC-connected state.

[0109] In the present disclosure, problems are identified for the scenarios where a UE needs to perform AI computing tasks, which may include AI model training and inferencing, when it is in RRC inactive or RRC idle state.

[0110] In a first problem scenario, techniques are described for a UE to obtain data and information required for AI computing in an energy and latency efficient manner without resorting to application-layer connection requirements. For example, in some cases, the UE may obtain AI model or related data (e.g., training data, performance requirements) without completion of RRC_resume procedure.

[0111] In a second problem scenario, each cell or UE may have network or device specific configurations such as number of antennas, supported band types, RF impairments or configurations, network configurations or settings, device settings, deployment, interference conditions, and other configured settings. This variety of configured settings may require cell and UE specific AI model, AI model training dataset, respective IDs, performance requirements such as key performance indicators (KPI) or key performance metrics (KPM) requirements for AI models. Thus, there is a problem as to how to configure RRC idle and RRC inactive UEs with cell specific models and how to update a gNB in a new tracking area with UE specific AI models.

[0112] In a third problem scenario, the UE may need to obtain AI model or training data from another entity (e.g., a Network Model Repository) . The UE and network may perform one or more operations to facilitate exchange of the AI model or the related data over the data plane.  This may require a new PDU session type to consider the specific characteristics of AI / ML data. The network and UE may use new dedicated data plane for this exchange.

[0113] FIG. 6 illustrates an example of a paging in a network relative to a registered tracking area, according to some aspects. A registered tracking area (RTA) 604 is an area defined by the network (e.g., a network operator) for tracking the movement of a UE 602. In a network, the coverage area is divided into smaller units which may be referred to as Tracking Areas (TA) . Each TA consists of multiple cells which are the basic coverage units. For example, cells 606, 608, 610, 612, 614, 616, and 618 may form a TA or registered TA. Organizing cells as TAs helps to manage the mobility of devices as they move from one cell to another within a TA. When UE 602 enters a new TA, the UE may initiate a tracking area update procedure to inform the network about its new location. The network keeps track of the UE's location by associating it with the RTA. This allows the network to efficiently route incoming calls, messages, or data to the correct location. Thus, registered tracking area 604 represents the cells where a UE is registered. It provides information to the network about the areas where the UE 602 is likely to move, which the network can use to reduce signaling overhead and optimize mobility management procedures.

[0114] When performing a paging mechanism in 5G NR, the UE 602 listens for RRC paging messaging when the UE is in the RRC_IDLE state or RRC_INACTIVE state. The listening may be performed during each paging occasion (e.g., 624, 626, 628) of a discontinuous reception (DRX) cycle. DRX is a power-saving mechanism used by a UE to reduce the amount of time it needs to monitor the network for incoming data. The DRX cycle defines the pattern and timing for the UE to periodically check for new data while minimizing power consumption. During each paging occasion, the UE turns listening on for a specified period of time, and keeps it off at other times in the DRX cycle.

[0115] The core network, which may include one or more base stations and other elements such as AMF 622, is responsible for performing RRC_IDLE paging. The serving cell (e.g., gNB 620) is responsible for performing RRC_INACTIVE paging. Paging messages allow the network to initiate mobile terminated connections.

[0116] The UE 602 does not update the network while moving between within or between registered tracking areas. The UE 602 updates the network if it moves outside of the registered  tracking areas. For example, the UE may release the serving cell connection. All cells in a registered tracking area are sent the same paging messages. Optionally, Access &Mobility Management Function (AMF) 622, may send paging message to serving base station only. The AMF is responsible for providing “UE reachability” services for other network functions. AMF 622 receives connection and session related information from the UE, and is responsible for handling connection and mobility management tasks. AMF 622 may be referred to as an AMF instance, and the network may comprise multiple AMF instances.

[0117] NGAP (Next Generation Application Protocol) paging is a mechanism used to notify the user equipment (UE) of incoming calls, messages, or other events, and supports communication between various network nodes. More generally, paging is a process where the network initiates contact with the UE to indicate that there is incoming data or a request for the UE to perform a specific action. When the network needs to notify a specific UE, it initiates an NGAP paging message that is sent to the UE's serving base station (e.g., gNB) . The serving base station then relays the paging message to the targeted UE. NGAP paging includes various stages. In a paging initiation stage, the network determines the UE that needs to be paged based on factors such as the UE's registered location, device context, or subscription profile. During the message generation stage, the network generates an NGAP paging message that contains information such as the UE's identifier and the reason for the paging (e.g., incoming call, SMS, or other event) . In a paging delivery stage, the serving base station receives the NGAP paging message from the network and delivers it to the targeted UE. The base station uses the appropriate radio resources to transmit the paging message over the air interface. In a UE response stage, upon receiving the paging message, the UE reacts accordingly such as by establishing a connection with the network, responding to the incoming message, and / or performing other requested actions.

[0118] An NGAP paging messages may include a variety of information such as one or more of the following: UE paging identity -5G-S-TMSI is used for temporary user ID as privacy and security purposes; Paging discontinuous reception (DRX) -AMF configures UE specific DRX cycle during NAS registration; Tracking area identity (TAI) list for paging: tracking area of cells; Paging priority; UE radio capability for paging and supported bands; Assistance data for paging and recommended cells; or Paging origin such as non-3GPP.

[0119] RRC paging messages may include one or more of: UE paging identity such as 5G-S-TMSI or Full I-RNTI (RRC_INACTIVE only) ; or UE initiates the random access procedure after receiving an RRC paging message.

[0120] The network and UE may transmit and receive an AI communication model over the data plane. An AI communication model and related data may include an AI model and related data that the UE and network may use to perform network or application tasks, as described.

[0121] AI techniques are deemed to be an integral part of future wireless networks such as 5G-Advanced and 6G. To perform AI model computing tasks, the UE may need to obtain an AI model or AI data from another entity (e.g., a Network Model Repository) . The UE and network may handle communication of the AI model and related data with different handling logic than standard data such as voice, video, etc., as some of the AI model and related data may be used by the network and UE to impact operation of the communication system itself. For example, the transfer of communication model should not be controlled by enabling / disabling mobile data and should be free of charge. Current PDU session types are designed to cover the normal user data, but they are not suitable for communicating information such as AI model or related data that can potentially impact operation of the underlying communication system.

[0122] FIG. 7 shows a method performed by a UE, according to some aspects. The method may be relevant to the first problem scenario described. The UE may obtain data and information required for AI computing in an energy and latency efficient manner without resorting to application-layer connection requirements, and without initiation of RRC resume, in some instances.

[0123] The method 700 may be performed by processing logic of a UE, which may be coupled to a transceiver, where the processor may execute instructions stored on computer-readable memory to perform the method described.

[0124] At block 702, the method may include determining that an artificial intelligence (AI) model is to be used by the UE to perform an AI task.

[0125] At block 704, the method may include, in response to the UE being in a radio resource control (RRC) idle or RRC inactive state, sending, to the network, an AI indicator that is associated with the AI model.

[0126] At block 706, the method may include receiving, from the network, the AI model or a training dataset that is associated with the AI model.

[0127] The AI indicator may comprise a dataset type or dataset identifier (ID) that is associated with the training dataset, or an AI model type or an AI model identifier that is associated with the AI model. A dataset type may describe a category of the dataset, while the ID may be a unique identifier that serves to address or name each dataset on a one to one basis. Each dataset may include training data (e.g., inputs and desired outputs, as well as criteria such as KPI) to train a corresponding AI model. Similarly, an AI model type may describe a category of the AI model (e.g., a use case or other category) , while the AI model ID may be an ID that uniquely identifies a given AI model.

[0128] With regard to block 702, the UE may determine a need for an AI model through the application layer (see FIG. 8, application layer 808) , or through the protocol stack (see FIG. 8, protocol stack 806) . The need of AI computing may include, for example, the need for AI inferencing for various PHY, MAC, and RLC procedures (e.g., logic and signaling) . For example, PHY, MAC, and RLC procedures may use the AI models to draw inferences used in various operations to configure the UE and / or transmit and receive data. Depending on where the AI related task is to be performed (e.g., in the protocol stack 806 or the application layer 808) , the UE may obtain the AI model or related training dataset differently.

[0129] For example, the UE may determine that the AI model is to be used in association with an application layer. In response, the UE 810 may utilize small-data transfer (SDT) protocol within random access channel (RACH) procedure to send the AI indicator to the network and receive the AI model or the training dataset. Sending the AI indicator to the network may be performed through message 3 of a four-step RACH procedure or message A of a two-step RACH procedure. Receiving the AI model or the training dataset may be performed through message 4 of the four-step RACH procedure or message B of the two-step RACH procedure. The SDT procedure in 5G NR can be configured to transmit the AI indicator in the uplink and receive the relevant AI related data (e.g., the training data or AI model) indicated by AI indicator in the downlink.

[0130] Alternatively, with regard to block 702, the UE may determine that the need for the AI model is to be used in association with a protocol stack. In response, the UE may send the AI  indicator to the network in uplink within a RACH procedure, receive the AI model or the training dataset over downlink within the RACH procedure. In such a case, the AI indicator may be sent to the network as part of at least one of: a preamble selection within the RACH procedure, a physical RACH (PRACH) configuration option, or message 3 of RACH. An example is shown in FIG. 9. In a contention-based RACH procedure (which may be referred to as 4 step RACH) or contention-free RACH procedure (which may be referred to as 2 step RACH) , the UE can include the AI indicator in Msg 3 or Msg A of the SDT procedure. The network (e.g., gNB) can send the relevant information using Msg 4 or Msg B and depending on the size of the requested information, the network can continue subsequent and multiple AI related data transmissions in the downlink while the UE stays in RRC_INACTIVE state during the operation.

[0131] In an aspect, in response to the AI model or the training dataset being smaller than a size threshold, the AI model or the training dataset is received from the network through an RRC connection setup message. For example, as shown in FIG. 9, GNB 914 may determine that AI model or the training dataset requested by the UE is within a size limit (e.g., ‘x’ gigabytes) . In response, the network may send the requested AI model or training dataset to the UE through a RRC connection setup message which may also include other information typical of the RRC connection setup message. The RRC CONNECTION SETUP message is typically used to establish signaling ratio bearer 1 (SRB1) which is used for transport of RRC messages including piggybacked NAS messages as well as NAS messages prior to the establishment of SRB2 where all are associated with a dedicated control logical channel. The RRC connection setup message may contain configuration information for SRB1 as well as configuration for PUSCH, PUCCH, PDSCH channels and information regarding uplink power control, CQI reporting, the SRS, antenna configuration and scheduling requests. Thus, if the size threshold is satisfied, the network may include the AI model or training dataset in the RRC connection setup message with the other typical information.

[0132] In response to the AI model or the dataset not being smaller than the size threshold, the UE may transition to an RRC connected state and receive the AI model or the training dataset over a physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) . The UE may release the connection in response to receiving the AI model or the training dataset, and / or in response to a timer, or in response to a signal being received from the network.

[0133] In addition, the method 700 may comprise, in response to the AI model or the dataset not satisfying a performance condition, releasing the AI model or the training dataset (e.g., from local memory) . This may be referred to as AI failure handling. In the case of UE sending a predetermined number of, e.g., N, AI / ML NACK feedback, then the UE may release storage of the AI model and / or related training data for the model. Additionally, or alternatively, the UE may request the gNB AI model and / or training data replacement for the corresponding model. The gNB and UE can coordinate the replacement of the AI model and corresponding training data at both the UE and the network and their databases.

[0134] In an aspect, method 700 may be performed from the perspective of the network. For example, the method may include receiving, from the UE in RRC idle or RRC idle state, an AI indicator that is associated with an AI model to be used by the UE to perform an AI task. The method may include sending, to the UE, the AI model or a training dataset that is associated with the AI model based on the AI indicator. Any of the other aspects described above may also be performed from the perspective of the network.

[0135] FIG. 8 shows an example workflow performed by a UE 810 for performing an update to an AI model, in accordance with some aspects.

[0136] AI computing purpose indication may be expressed from the UE to the network in RACH Procedure. RACH is a channel used by user equipment (UE) to initiate communication with the base station (e.g., gNB) when establishing a connection or performing random access procedures. When a UE wants to initiate communication with the network, it uses the RACH to send a random access preamble to the gNB. The RACH procedure involves a random access preamble transmission where the UE selects a random access preamble, which is a specific sequence of pre-defined symbols, and transmits it over the RACH. The preamble serves as a unique identifier for the UE. The UE performs timing alignment by receiving the random access preamble and aligning the timing and frequency synchronization with the UE. This improves accuracy of reception of subsequent messages. Upon receiving the preamble from the UE, the gNB sends a random access response back to the UE. The response may include information such as the timing advance value and temporary identifiers for subsequent communication. If multiple UEs select the same preamble, the network may perform contention resolution to resolve the contention and allocate resources to the UEs for further communication.

[0137] A UE 810 may be in communication with a network (not shown) . The UE 802 may perform one or more operations to account for AI model failure or a need for AI model training or updating at the UE. At block 802, the UE 810 may be in an RRC active or RRC idle state.

[0138] At operation 812, the UE 810 may interact with Application layer 808 and receive an indication that an application in the application layer 808 is to utilize at least one AI model (which might be trained by the network) . In response, the UE 810 may determine that at least one AI model needs to be updated (e.g., with training data provided by the network) or a completely new AI model is needed for use in the application layer 808. In response, the UE may proceed to RACH triggering and initialization block 804 to obtain the AI-related data (e.g., a new AI model, an update to an existing AI model, or training dataset to train an AI model) .

[0139] Additionally, or alternatively, at block 814 (interaction with the protocol stack 806) , the UE 810 may perform one or more one radio-related operations through protocol stack 806 that utilize an AI model for inferencing, prior to the UE transitioning to RRC-idle or RRC-inactive. In response to this operation failing to satisfy one or more requirements (e.g., the operation, using the inferencing of the AI model, did not perform to a desired level) , the UE may determine that the corresponding AI model is in need of update (e.g., training) or replacement and proceed to block 804.

[0140] Additionally, or alternatively, through interaction with the protocol stack 806 (at operation 814) , the UE 810 may monitor performance of an AI model that has been in use against the desired and pre-defined criteria (e.g., KPI, KPM) over a given period of time. The performance outcomes of interest can be any module or functionality that the AI model is being used for, such as CSI compression / decompression error, beam link failure report, positioning error, or particular application layer use-cases, or other AI / ML functionality.

[0141] As such, the UE may determine a need for an AI model or training dataset to train the AI model, which may originate from the protocol stack 806 and / or the application layer 808. At block 804, UE 810 in RRC inactive of RRC idle state can include an indication in the RACH procedure to the network, which informs the network that this RACH procedure is triggered by the need of AI computing, i.e., AI model training, and / or AI model inferencing. The AI indicator indication information, which may be referred to as an AI indicator (as described in method 700) , can include one or more of the following: a data set indicator / type (for model training) ; a  data set ID (for model training) ; a model indicator / type (for inferencing) ; or a model ID (for inferencing) . Further, the AI indicator may include KPI / KPM (test data inference loss, network measurements) of existing an AI / ML model.

[0142] The RACH triggering and initialization 804 operation may be performed based on (or in response to) the UE's need of AI computing which may be initiated by: AI / ML operations in the application layer 808. The application layer 808 may inform the UE of the need of new AI / ML related information. Additionally, or alternatively, the RACH triggering and initialization 804 operations may be performed based on (or in response to) the need of AI / ML computing which may be initiated by AI / ML operations in the protocol stack 806, in particular layer 1 (L1) and layer 2 (L2) up to the RRC. In 5G, layer 1 may refer to the physical layer (PHY) . Layer 2 include medium access control (MAC) , and radio link control (RLC) , and packet data convergence protocol (PDCP) layers.

[0143] For the AI / ML operations in the protocol stack 806, in one example, the RACH initialization and procedure 804 which may be contention-based (4 step) or contention-free (2 step) , can additionally include the AI indicator in the uplink and requested information in the downlink. The AI indicator can be part of one or more of the following:

[0144] 1. the PRACH message where the preamble selection can be based on AI indicator message;

[0145] 2. a PRACH configuration option such as short / long preamble with further options / formats or resource selection / configuration per RACH transmission, or encoded preamble with larger size;

[0146] 3. Msg 3 and transmitted over the configured UL-SCH resources; or

[0147] 4. a separate AI / ML_ind msg feedback signaling.

[0148] UE 810 may perform RACH triggering and initialization block 804, in response to the need for the AI model (or training data) determined by the UE through the protocol stack 806 or application layer 808. Operations described with respect to FIG. 8 may correspond to the blocks described with respect to method 700. For example, operation 804 may correspond to blocks 704 and 706, and operations 814 and 812 may correspond to block 702.

[0149] FIG. 9 shows a diagram illustrating an example of providing an AI indication to update an AI model, according to some aspects.

[0150] At operation 902, a UE 912 may transition to RRC inactive or RRC idle state. In this state, the UE may determine it has an AI need (e.g., for training or inferencing) , as discussed.

[0151] In response, the UE 912 may proceed to operation 904 and perform RACH triggering and initialization. At operation 916, the UE may send the network (e.g., gNB 914) an AI indicator.

[0152] In response to receiving such indication, the network determine, at operation 906, if the RACH signals support the AI response. For example, gNB 914 may determine the size of the information (e.g., training data or AI model) that is requested by UE 912. If the requested information data size can be supported by the Connection Setup messages, then gNB 914 may proceed to operation 918 and directly provide the required AI information in at least one of the Connection Setup messages.

[0153] If the network determines that the requested data is larger than what can be supported by the Connection Setup messages, then the network waits for the Connection Setup acknowledgement message and sends the requested AI / ML information (operation 928) , which is performed after the UE transitions to RRC-CONNECTED state (at operation 908) , and using the PDSCH resources.

[0154] In one option, when a model update or new AI model is requested by the UE, gNB 914 can pre-configure the UE when it should enter the RRC-CONNECTED state. This pre-configuration information can be included in the Connection Set-up messages (e.g., at operation 924) . Based on this pre-configuration information, the UE may attempt to complete Connection Setup acknowledgement procedures and switch to RRC-CONNECTED state (at operation 908) .

[0155] In one example, the network may instruct the UE to release the connection as soon as the required AI related data is received (operation 922) .

[0156] In one example, the network may instruct the UE to start a feedback timer (e.g., at operation 920) as soon as the required AI / ML information is received. This instructs the UE to provide feedback relating to the received AI / ML information (at operation 926) , at or before the timer expiration 910.

[0157] The instruction to perform the feedback timer operations (operation 920) can be included in Message 3 and transmitted over the configured UL-SCH resources, or in a separate feedback signaling. The timer can be restarted / extended if the feedback is negative (e.g., the UE wants to ask for additional Data Set, Model Update, etc) . The timer can be terminated early  if the feedback is positive, such as when the UE is satisfied with the received AI / ML information. The UE may release the connection and enter INACTIVE or IDLE state when the timer is stopped or expired.

[0158] The network may provide relevant KPI, KPM, or state information to the UE, based on the received AI indicator from UE so that UE can select the desired AI model or training or hyper parameters internally. For example, reported parameters may include KPI or KPM of network measurements, channel measurements, AI / ML model loss outputs, or other parameters.

[0159] The UE may perform AI failure handling. In the case of UE sending a predetermined number of messages, e.g., ACK / NACK feedback, then the UE may release the stored AI model and / or related training data for the model. Then, the UE may request the gNB AI model and / or training data replacement for the corresponding model. The gNB and UE may coordinate the replacement of the AI model and corresponding training data at both locations and their databases.

[0160] As described, in a second problem scenario, each cell or UE may have network or device specific configurations such as number of antennas, supported band types, RF impairments or configurations, network configurations or settings, device settings, deployment, interference conditions, and other configured settings. This variety of configured settings for UE and cell may require a specific AI model, AI model set, data ID, data set, or KPI / KPM requirements. Thus, there is a problem as to how to configure RRC IDLE and RRC INACTIVE UEs with cell specific models and how to update gNB in a new tracking area with UE specific models.

[0161] FIG. 10 shows a method performed by a network, that may update an AI model based on UE configuration or location, according to some aspects. The method 1000 may be performed by processing logic of a network (e.g., a gNB) , which may include a processor coupled to one or more transceivers, where the processor may execute instructions stored on computer-readable memory to perform the method described. The network may be in communication with a UE such as those described in other sections.

[0162] At block 1002, the method comprises obtaining a UE type or location of the UE. A UE type may refer to hardware of a UE device, software of a UE device, a model number, and / or configuration (e.g., settings) of a UE. For example, a particular UE device (e.g., a particular mobile phone) may have a particular UE type which may include a known set of hardware,  software, configured settings, processing capabilities, bandwidth, or other characteristic that is specific to that UE. The location of a UE may include coordinates, a relative direction, a distance, a cell coverage area, or one or more TAs that the UE may be within. The location may be determined by the UE or the network via GPS, triangulation, signal strength, and / or other localization techniques.

[0163] At block 1004, the method comprises determining an update to an artificial intelligence (AI) model that corresponds to the UE type or the location of the UE.

[0164] In an aspect, determining the update to the AI model comprises maintaining an association between the AI model and one or more UE types, or between the AI model and one or more RTAs, based on signaling one or more attributes between an application function (AF) control plane of the network and an access and mobility management function (AMF) control plane of the network. The one or more attributes may comprise one or more of: an AI application specific discontinuous reception (DRX) cycle time for the UE, a tracking area identity (TAI) that includes the AI model or the update to the AI model that is specific to each cell in a tracking area, one or more AI capabilities associated with the UE type, or a key performance indicator (KPI) associated with the AI model. This is described in other sections, such as with regard to FIG. 11.

[0165] At block 1006, the method comprises, in response to the UE being in an RRC idle or RRC inactive state, paging the UE with an indicator to update the AI model based on a registered tracking area (RTA) that is associated with the location of the UE, or the UE type of the UE. This indicator may be different from the AI indicator described with respect to method 700. In this case, the indicator is provided from the network to the UE to indicate to the UE which AI model may need to be updated, based on the UE type or location of the UE.

[0166] In an aspect, the indicator to update the AI model is sent by the network (at block 1006) through a downlink control information (DCI) signal over a physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) .

[0167] In an aspect, the method 1000 further comprises sending the update of the AI model to the UE, which includes an updated version of the AI model or training dataset associated with the AI model, and receiving an acknowledgement from the UE that the updated version of the AI model or the training dataset is received by the UE. In an aspect, the update for the AI  model (e.g., an entire AI model or training data) is sent to the UE through one or more system information block (SIB) signals (see, for example, FIG. 12) .

[0168] In an aspect, the UE ignores the paging from the network in response to a compute condition, storage capacity, or energy level of the UE not satisfying a respective threshold.

[0169] In an aspect, the method 1000 further comprises receiving, from the UE, a training result of the update to the AI model over a non-cellular connection (e.g., a Wi-Fi network) when the UE is coupled to the non-cellular connection and is in the RRC idle or the RRC inactive state. The training result may indicate that training was successful, or unsuccessful (e.g., the trained model could not perform up to one or more requirements) .

[0170] In an aspect, method 1000 may be performed from the perspective of the UE. For example, the method may be performed by the UE, and may include transitioning to an RRC idle or RRC inactive state. The method may further include providing a UE type or location of the UE to the network. The method may further comprise receiving a paging message from the network with an indicator to update an AI model. The update to the AI model may be based on an RTA that is associated with the location of the UE, or the UE type of the UE. All other aspects described above may apply.

[0171] FIG. 11 shows a diagram illustrating an example of AI update for a UE in RRC-IDLE, according to some aspects.

[0172] As described, it may be desirable to update models based on UE type or location. An operator or network may define a new RTA for particular cell-specific AI model types.

[0173] In an aspect, AI application function (AF) 1108 updates AMF 1106 with AI / ML Naf_UE_CapabilityForAIML messages at operation 1116. The AI Application Function (AF) may be a control plane function within 5G core network that provides AI specific services. These messages (operation 1116) may include a UE or location specific AI model, a training data set, or performance requirements (e.g., a KPI / KPM requirement) for a given AI model. Location may refer to a geographical area and / or one or more RTAs. Thus, this information may associate which AI model or models should be used for a given UE type at a given UE location (e.g., based on which cell or RTA the UE is camped on) .

[0174] In response, AMF 1106 (which may be referred to as an AMF instance within the network) , may signal gNB 1104 at operation 1118 with a “NGAP: AI paging start” message at  operation 1118. This message may include: AI application specific DRX cycle configuration (which may be implementation specific) ; a tracking area Identity (TAI) which includes cell specific AI model sets, training datasets, UE capabilities for one or more AI functions; paging assistance data which includes AI model set, or performance requirements for AI model; and / or other information.

[0175] In response to operation 1118, the gNB 1104 may perform RRC paging with the UE 1102 at operation 1120. The paging may include AI data such as, for example: an RTA or UE specific AI / ML model ID, data set ID, etc. This may be performed while the UE 1102 is in RRC inactive or RRC idle state. For example, UE 1102 may be in RRC idle or RRC inactive state and listen to the network only during paging occasions such as 1110, 1112, and 1114. Paging operation 1120 may be performed through paging control channel (PCCH) , Paging Channel (PCH) , and / or physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) .

[0176] At operation 1122, the UE 1102 may respond with an AI ACK (at operation 1122) . In response, the gNB 1104 may signal the AMF 1106 that the UE has received the AI model or training dataset through an NGAP AI ACK (operation 1124) . In such a manner, the AMF 1106 instance may be made aware of whether the UE 1102 has an updated model. The AI ACK (operation 1122) may be performed over common control channel (CCCH) , uplink shared channel (UL-SCH) , and / or physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) .

[0177] The UE may update the network to indicate that it is moving to an out-of-registered tracking area or non-RTA. In one option, the AMF 1106 informs a target gNB 1104 with “NGAP: AI / ML paging” messaging. The UE 1102 is paged by the target gNB alone, e.g., through cell specific paging. In a second option, the AMF 1106 informs all gNBs with a new registered tracking area. In the second option, the UE is paged by all the cells that belong to the new tracking area. This option may be a high overhead option.

[0178] FIG. 12 shows a diagram illustrating procedures for RRC idle or RRC inactive states of a UE in a registered tracking area, according to some aspects.

[0179] The gNB 1204 and UE 1202 may be in communication, where the gNB 1204 may represent a serving cell. UE 1202 may be in RRC inactive or RRC idle state.

[0180] At operation 1206, gNB 1204 forwards UE 1202 an indication that there is an update to the UE specific and / or cell specific AI model. This operation may be performed through PDCCH  DCI update signaling. The AI model may be specific to a cell (e.g., the cell that UE 1202 is camped on or a neighbor cell) , or specific to an AI application, or both. The indication may be carried in what may be referred to as ‘P-RNTI’ . A Radio Network Temporary Identifier (RNTI) differentiates and identifies a connected mode in a cell such as, for example, a UE, a specific radio channel, a group of UEs in case of paging, a group of UEs for which power control is issued by the gNB, system information transmitted for all the UEs, or other information. There are a several RNTI types in 5G NR such as P-RNTI, SI-RNTI, RA-RNTI, Temporary C-RNTI, C-RNTI, MCS-C-RNTI, CS-RNTI, TPC-PUCCH-RNTI, TPC-PUSCH-RNTI, TPC-SRS-RNTI, INT-RNTI, SFI-RNTI, I-RNTI, and SP-CSI-RNTI.

[0181] In an example, the paging RNTI (P-RNTI) may be used to facilitate AI model or related data. The P-RNTI can have indicator for AI model ID update. P-RNTI may be used by the UEs for the reception of paging in the downlink. In addition, the P-RNTI may also be used by the network to inform the UEs about SI Modifications and / or ETWS / CMAS notifications using what may be referred to as a ‘Short Message’ which may be transmitted with P-RNTI over DCI at operation 1206. Based on si-SchedulingInfo configuration, after receiving the ‘Short Message’ , the UE 1202 shall acquire SIB6 for ‘ETWS primary notification’ or SIB7 for ‘ETWS secondary notification’ or SIB8 for CMAS notification.

[0182] The gNB 1204 may address both paging messages and Short Messages to P-RNTI on PDCCH, but while paging is sent on paging control channel (PCCH) logical channel, the SI Modification / ETWS / CMAS may be sent to UE 1202 over PDCCH directly.

[0183] In an example, a new type of system information block (SIB) for an AI update can be defined as SIB_AI / ML. After the short message is conveyed at operation 1206, gNB 1204 may send the new SIB to the UE 1202 at operation 1208. The SIB_AI / ML may include the AI model, a training dataset, the AI model ID, dataset ID, or performance requirements (e.g., KPM / KPIs) for the respective AI model.

[0184] In an aspect, more generally, UE compute capability aware paging is supported.

[0185] A gNB (e.g., in any of the disclosed examples) may send a page to a UE in Idle / Inactive state when there is DL data for the UE. Once distributed ML training / inferencing are introduced, the gNB may need to page the UE for ML data or model transfer tasks as well. However, the UE may be busy or may not have sufficient resources (i.e., compute, battery, etc) and not able to  take on additional AI training or inferencing tasks. In another case, the UE may not be able to finish an AI training or inferencing task within a desired time period which might include its RRC-Connect duration. Therefore, a mechanism is needed to indicate to the UE the purpose of the page (e.g., whether it is communication based or AI based) , which will allow the UE to respond accordingly.

[0186] In one option if the gNB indicates that it is an AI related page and the UE doesn’ t have the necessary resources to undertake the task, then the UE may ignore the page. The UE may consider its compute and storage capabilities to determine its availability for an additional AI task. These capabilities can be reported back to the gNB for re-scheduling of the existing AI tasks or a future AI task configuration, including RRC, at the UE. In another option, the UE may send a rejection message (or NACK) for the AI related paging. The UE might include the reason of rejection (i.e., low battery, memory constraints, etc) in this message.

[0187] In an aspect, the gNB may include an indicator in the paging message to indicate the purpose of the page. This may be indicated using one or more of the following methods:

[0188] a. Choice of the Paging-RNTI used to scramble the DCI for the UE, one P-RNTI for communication, and another for AIML task (or there could be multiple values configured for AIML tasks requiring different amount of resources) ,

[0189] b. Choice of the PDCCH resources used to transmit the DCI related to the paging message, or

[0190] c. an AI task is encoded to P-RNTI (e.g., at operation 1206) to poll compute-capable UEs so that compute-incapable UEs do not decode DCI.

[0191] When the AI related page from a gNB is ignored / rejected by a UE, the gNB may wait a pre-configured number of Paging Occasions before sending another AIML related page to the UE, unless the UE indicates availability for AI tasks before that.

[0192] In another option, if the UE is in RRC-Idle / Inactive mode during an active AI training or inference task, whereas it is active in a non-cellular connection, e.g., Wi-Fi, then instead of RRC-Resume procedures, the UE may use the non-cellular connection to send the training or inferencing results to the configured AI server. Similarly, in a dual SIM case, instead of RRC-Resume procedures in the first SIM to send the training inference results, the UE may use the  connection on second SIM to send the training or inference results to the AI server that is associated with the first SIM.

[0193] FIG. 13 shows a method 1300 performed by a network, that may to facilitate exchange of the AI model or related data (e.g., training data, performance requirements, an AI model ID or training dataset ID, etc. ) over the data plane, according to some aspects.

[0194] The method may be performed by processing logic of a user equipment (UE) , which may include a processor coupled to one or more transceivers, where the processor may execute instructions stored on computer-readable memory to perform the method described. The UE may be in communication with a network such as described in other sections.

[0195] As described with respect to the third problem scenario, the UE may need to obtain the AI model or related data from another entity such as, for example, a network model repository. The UE and network may perform one or more operations to facilitate exchange of the AI model or related data over the data plane. This may be supported by a new PDU session type that accounts for specific characteristics of AI related data. The network and UE may use a new dedicated data plane for this exchange.

[0196] At block 1302, the UE may determine that a condition that is associated with an artificial intelligence (AI) model is satisfied.

[0197] In an aspect, the condition includes a completion of a registration procedure, and the network configures the UE to respond to the condition. See, for example, FIG. 14. In an aspect, the condition includes receiving signaling from the network indicating availability of an update associated with the AI model. See, for example, FIG. 15. In an aspect, the condition includes an operation performed by the UE independent of the network, wherein the operation includes determining a timestamp of the AI model, or determining a version of the AI model, or comparing the AI model to a performance metric. See, for example, FIG. 16.

[0198] At block 1304, in response to determining that the condition is satisfied, the method includes initiating, by the UE, a packet data unit (PDU) session with the network. PDU Session Establishment is the process of establishing a data path between the UE and the 5G core network. A PDU session may be referred to as a logical connection between the UE and the network. It may be used to carry user data and can support different types of services, such as voice, video, data, and in this case, AI-related data. Initiating the PDU session may include  sending, by the UE, a request to the 5G core network. The request (aPDU session establishment request) may include information about the type of service that the UE wants to use (e.g., an AI model service) , and the type of traffic (e.g., an AI model, training dataset, etc. ) . The network may respond with a PDU session establishment accept. Once the PDU session has been established, the UE can use it to send and receive data. The 5G core network manages the resources used by the PDU session to ensure that the network is used efficiently, and that the UE receives the appropriate quality of service (QoS) .

[0199] In an aspect, establishing the PDU session (e.g., at block 1304) comprises receiving, by the UE, one or more signals from the network that includes a class (e.g., a type) of the AI model or an ID of the AI model or a specific UE route selection policy (URSP) rule to couple the PDU session to a corresponding network slice.

[0200] At block 1306, the method includes receiving the AI model or training dataset for the AI model from the network within the PDU session.

[0201] In an aspect, method 1300 may be performed from the perspective of the network. For example, the method may include establishing a PDU session with a UE that is in RRC idle or RRC inactive state based on a request from the UE. The request from the UE may be made in response to a condition (as described above) being satisfied. The network may send the AI model or training dataset that is associated with the AI model to the UE, within the PDU session. All other aspects described above may apply.

[0202] FIG. 14, FIG. 15, and FIG. 16 show examples of a new type of PDU session for exchanging AI-related data between UE and network. The PDU session may also be referred to as a communication Data (CDE) session. The data to be transmitted over this PDU session is related to communication system, therefore it should not be controlled by mobile data option as communication data should be transferred even if mobile data is disabled. The PDU session ends at network data function (e.g., Network Model Repository ) and it shall not carry any other data. The PDU session establishment trigger for CDE PDU session is different than the trigger of other PDU sessions.

[0203] UE should send PDU Session establishment request to the network to start the establishment of CDE PDU session. The examples shown in FIG. 14, FIG. 15, and FIG. 16 provide details regarding CDE PDU session establishment and data transfer over PDU session, in  particular, by illustrating different trigger mechanisms for the UE to start CDE PDU session establishment procedure.

[0204] In FIG. 14, the network 1404 may configure the UE 1402 to establish the CDE PDU session immediately after registration procedure 1406. Generally, a registration procedure may include signaling between a UE and network to provide the network with information about the UE. In this procedure, a UE may send a "Registration Request" message to the network to initiate the registration process with the 5G core network. The Registration Request message may be sent to the 5G core network via the Radio Access Network (RAN) and conveyed to AMF. The Registration Request message may include a request type, a mobile identity of the UE, the device's capabilities, supported network features, and other important UE-specific information.

[0205] In this example, immediately after the registration procedure 1406 is complete, the UE 1402 may initiate a PDU session at operation 1408, which may then be used to obtain AI related data over the data plane, as described.

[0206] In FIG. 15, the network 1504 and UE 1502 may perform a registration procedure. After, the network may indicate to the UE about availability of one or more AI models or relevant updates for the UE, through a generic UE configuration update procedure 1506. The network 1504 (e.g., an AMF instance of the network) may support the generic UE configuration procedure by sending a Configuration Update Command message to the UE when certain parameters are modified. For example, the network may configure the UE with a Configuration Update Command message: to update 5G-GUTI, Allowed Network Slice Selection Assistance Information (NSSAI) , Rejected NSSAI, TAI list, short message service (SMS) indication, or other parameters, and / or an AI-related parameter (e.g., an AI model, training dataset, ID of AI model or training dataset, performance requirements of an AI model) .

[0207] In response to this indication, the UE 1502 may establish CDE PDU session at operation 1508, if the PDU session is not already established. Once established, the UE 1502 may obtain the relevant AI data within the PDU session (e.g., over the data plane) .

[0208] In FIG. 16, the UE 1602 may be in communication with network 1604. UE 1602 may trigger establishment of CDE PDU session in response to internal triggers, without configuration or signaling from the network 1604. At operation 1606, the UE 1602 may monitor internal triggers such as its location, the current time, timing that is associated with a model, or other  internal triggers. For example, the UE may scan one or more AI models stored locally and determine that one of the AI models needs to be updated due to the time the AI model was last updated.

[0209] In response to an interior trigger being satisfied at operation 1606, the UE 1602 may initiate establishment of a PDU session at operation 1608. Once established, the UE 1602 may obtain the AI model or data thereof that is associated with the satisfied trigger over the established PDU session, as described.

[0210] More generally, the parameters to be used for CDE PDU session establishment could be defined by 3GPP or configured by the network. CDE PDU session establishment may contain also some information about the models to be transferred over the PDU session, e.g., the AI model type or ID, the expected update request of the AIML models during the operation, etc. The network may add a specific UE Route Selection Policy (URSP) rule to link a given PDU session to an appropriate network slice.

[0211] Portions of what was described above may be implemented with logic circuitry such as a dedicated logic circuit or with a microcontroller or other form of processing core that executes program code instructions. Thus, processes taught by the discussion above may be performed with program code such as machine-executable instructions that cause a machine that executes these instructions to perform certain functions. In this context, a “machine” may be a machine that converts intermediate form (or “abstract” ) instructions into processor specific instructions (e.g., an abstract execution environment such as a “virtual machine” (e.g., a Java Virtual Machine) , an interpreter, a Common Language Runtime, a high-level language virtual machine, etc. ) , and / or, electronic circuitry disposed on a semiconductor chip (e.g., “logic circuitry” implemented with transistors) designed to execute instructions such as a general-purpose processor and / or a special-purpose processor. Processes taught by the discussion above may also be performed by (in the alternative to a machine or in combination with a machine) electronic circuitry designed to perform the processes (or a portion thereof) without the execution of program code.

[0212] The present invention also relates to an apparatus for performing the operations described herein. This apparatus may be specially constructed for the required purpose, or it may comprise a general-purpose computer selectively activated or reconfigured by a computer  program stored in the computer. Such a computer program may be stored in a computer readable storage medium, such as, but is not limited to, any type of disk including floppy disks, optical disks, CD-ROMs, and magnetic-optical disks, read-only memories (ROMs) , RAMs, EPROMs, EEPROMs, magnetic or optical cards, or any type of media suitable for storing electronic instructions, and each coupled to a computer system bus.

[0213] A machine-readable medium includes any mechanism for storing or transmitting information in a form readable by a machine (e.g., a computer) . For example, a machine-readable medium includes read only memory ( “ROM” ) ; random access memory ( “RAM” ) ; magnetic disk storage media; optical storage media; flash memory devices; etc.

[0215] An article of manufacture may be used to store program code. An article of manufacture that stores program code may be embodied as, but is not limited to, one or more memories (e.g., one or more flash memories, random access memories (static, dynamic, or other) ) , optical disks, CD-ROMs, DVD ROMs, EPROMs, EEPROMs, magnetic or optical cards or other type of machine-readable media suitable for storing electronic instructions. Program code may also be downloaded from a remote computer (e.g., a server) to a requesting computer (e.g., a client) by way of data signals embodied in a propagation medium (e.g., via a communication link (e.g., a network connection) ) .

[0216] The preceding detailed descriptions are presented in terms of algorithms and symbolic representations of operations on data bits within a computer memory. These algorithmic descriptions and representations are the tools used by those skilled in the data processing arts to most effectively convey the substance of their work to others skilled in the art. An algorithm is here, and generally, conceived to be a self-consistent sequence of operations leading to a desired result. The operations are those requiring physical manipulations of physical quantities. Usually, though not necessarily, these quantities take the form of electrical or magnetic signals capable of being stored, transferred, combined, compared, and otherwise  manipulated. It has proven convenient at times, principally for reasons of common usage, to refer to these signals as bits, values, elements, symbols, characters, terms, numbers, or the like.

[0217] It should be kept in mind, however, that all of these and similar terms are to be associated with the appropriate physical quantities and are merely convenient labels applied to these quantities. Unless specifically stated otherwise as apparent from the above discussion, it is appreciated that throughout the description, discussions utilizing terms such as “transmitting” , “sending” , “selecting, ” “determining, ” “receiving, ” “forming, ” “grouping, ” “aggregating, ” “generating, ” “removing, ” or the like, refer to the action and processes of a computer system, or similar electronic computing device, that manipulates and transforms data represented as physical (electronic) quantities within the computer system's registers and memories into other data similarly represented as physical quantities within the computer system memories or registers or other such information storage, transmission or display devices.

[0218] The processes and displays presented herein are not inherently related to any particular computer or other apparatus. Various general-purpose systems may be used with programs in accordance with the teachings herein, or it may prove convenient to construct a more specialized apparatus to perform the operations described. The required structure for a variety of these systems will be evident from the description below. In addition, the present invention is not described with reference to any particular programming language. It will be appreciated that a variety of programming languages may be used to implement the teachings of the invention as described herein.

[0219] It is well understood that the use of personally identifiable information should follow privacy policies and practices that are generally recognized as meeting or exceeding industry or governmental requirements for maintaining the privacy of users. In particular, personally identifiable information data should be managed and handled so as to minimize risks of unintentional or unauthorized access or use, and the nature of authorized use should be clearly indicated to users.

[0220] The foregoing discussion merely describes some exemplary aspects of the present invention. One skilled in the art will readily recognize from such discussion, the accompanying drawings and the claims that various modifications can be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
