Abstract

Embodiments of the invention relate to ranking relay client devices as candidate relay client devices. Therefore, a first client device (100) transmits a relay discovery message (510) for a sidelink relay communication procedure, and the discovery message (510) indicates a mobility state of the first client device (100). A second client device (100') receives the discovery message (510) for the sidelink relay communication procedure. Based on the mobility state of the first client device (100) the second client device (100') ranks the first client device (100) as a candidate relay client device for the sidelink relay connection. Thereby, the second client device (100') can select a suitable relay client device among a plurality of candidate relay client devices.

[0001] Embodiments of the invention relate to ranking relay client devices for sidelink relay connections in a communication system. Background

[0002] In 3GPP new radio (NR) a so-called UE-to-network relay enables coverage extension and power saving for a so-called remote user equipment (UE) . The coverage scenarios considered in Re-17 are defined in TS 38.300: NR Uu is assumed on the Uu link of the UE-to-Network relay UE. NR sidelink is assumed on PC5 between the remote UE (s) and the UE-to-Network relay UE.Summary

[0003] An objective of embodiments of the invention is to provide a solution which mitigates or solves the drawbacks and problems of conventional solutions.

[0004] Another objective of embodiments of the invention is to provide a solution for improved ranking of relay client devices and thus also of improved selection of a relay client device for establishing or maintaining a connection for a so-called remote client device.

[0005] The above and further objectives are solved by the subject matter of the independent claims. Further embodiments of the invention can be found in the dependent claims.

[0006] According to a first aspect of the invention, the above mentioned and other objectives are achieved with a first client device configured to:

[0007] transmit a discovery message for a sidelink relay communication procedure, the discovery message indicating a mobility state of the first client device.

[0008] An advantage of the first client device according to the first aspect is that a second client device, acting as a remote client device, can rank and select the most appropriate first client device, acting as a relay client device, taking into consideration the mobility state of the relay client device so that a stable communication link to a network via the relay client device can be established or maintained.

[0009] In an implementation form of a first client device according to the first aspect, the mobility state of the first client device is any of: a stationary state, a normal state, a medium state and a high state.

[0010] An advantage with this implementation form is that the information about different mobility states of the relay client device can be considered by the remote client device when ranking the relay client device as a candidate relay client device.

[0011] In an implementation form of a first client device according to the first aspect, the mobility state of the first client device further indicates a direction of movement of the first client device.

[0012] An advantage with this implementation form is that this implementation form provides information about the direction of movement of the relay client device to the remote client device. Thus, the remote client device can rank the relay client device further based on the information about the direction of movement for improved ranking of the relay client device since the information about the direction of movement of the relay client device is helpful for establishing or maintaining a connection for the remote client device. For example, the remote client device can determine a relative direction of movement between the remote client device and the relay client device and use the relative direction of movement in ranking and selecting a relay client device.

[0013] In an implementation form of a first client device according to the first aspect, the first client device is configured to:

[0014] receive a first configuration message from a network access node, the first configuration message indicating an activation or a deactivation of indicating the mobility state of the first client device in the discovery message; and

[0015] transmit the discovery message based on the first configuration message.

[0016] An advantage with this implementation form is that it will allow the network to control if the relay client device should include its mobility state in the discovery message or not.

[0017] In an implementation form of a first client device according to the first aspect, the first client device is configured to:

[0018] transmit an additional discovery message for the sidelink relay communication procedure upon changing the mobility state to a new mobility state of the first client device, the additional discovery message indicating the new mobility state of the first client device.

[0019] An advantage with this implementation form is that it will allow the relay client device to update its mobility state in the next discovery message transmission following the mobility state change and thus make it possible for the remote client device to consider the mobility state change when re-ranking the relay client device.

[0020] In an implementation form of a first client device according to the first aspect, the first client device is a candidate relay client device for a sidelink relay connection of the sidelink relay communication procedure.

[0021] An advantage with this implementation form is that the relay client device can help the remote client device to establish or maintain the indirect connection with the network via the relay client device.

[0022] According to a second aspect of the invention, the above mentioned and other objectives are achieved with a second client device configured to:

[0023] receive a discovery message for a sidelink relay communication procedure from a first client device, the discovery message indicating a mobility state of the first client device; and

[0024] rank the first client device as a candidate relay client device for a sidelink relay connection based on the mobility state of the first client device.

[0025] An advantage of the second client device according to the second aspect is that the second client device, acting as a remote client device, can rank and select the most appropriate first client device, acting as a relay client device, taking into consideration the mobility state of the relay client device so that a stable communication link to a network via the relay client device can be established or maintained.

[0026] In an implementation form of a second client device according to the second aspect, the second client device is configured to:

[0027] rank the first client device as a candidate relay client device for the sidelink relay connection further based on a mobility state of the second client device.

[0028] An advantage with this implementation form is that the remote client device by considering both the mobility state of the relay client device and its own mobility state improved ranking and selection of the relay client device is possible.

[0029] In an implementation form of a second client device according to the second aspect, the mobility state of the first client device and / or the mobility state of the second client device are any of: a stationary state, a normal state, a medium state and a high state.

[0030] An advantage with this implementation form is that the information about different mobility states of the relay client device can be considered by the remote client device when ranking the relay client device as a candidate relay client device.

[0031] In an implementation form of a second client device according to the second aspect, the mobility state of the first client device further indicates a direction of movement of the first client device.

[0032] An advantage with this implementation form is that this implementation form provides information about the direction of movement of the relay client device to the remote client device.

[0033] In an implementation form of a second client device according to the second aspect, the second client device is configured to:

[0034] rank the first client device as a candidate relay client device for the sidelink relay connection further based on a direction of movement of the second client device.

[0035] An advantage with this implementation form is that by also considering the direction of movement of the relay candidate client device improved ranking of the relay client device is possible.

[0036] In an implementation form of a second client device according to the second aspect, the second client device is configured to:

[0037] rank the first client device as a candidate relay client device for the sidelink relay connection further based on a measured received signal power of the discovery message.

[0038] An advantage with this implementation form is that by also considering the received signal power of the discovery message the remote client device can perform improved ranking of the relay client device. For example, by determining if the signal strength of the discovery message of the relay client device is increasing or decreasing or remaining unchanged with time. This information will help the remote client device to rank and select an appropriate relay client device that is likely to provide a stable connection to the network.

[0039] In an implementation form of a second client device according to the second aspect, the second client device is configured to:

[0040] rank the first client device as a candidate relay client device for the sidelink relay connection further based on two or more received signal strength threshold values, each received signal strength threshold value being associated with a mobility state of the first client device.

[0041] An advantage with this implementation form is that the remote client device can apply these two or more thresholds in conjunction with two or more mobility states of the relay client device and thus rank the relay client device accordingly. By using multiple thresholds also consideration can be taken to other parameters such as cell size, traffic load, etc. For example, for small cells setting the threshold value may be more restrictive, i.e., a higher value while for large cells the setting the threshold value can be more relaxed, i.e., a lower value.

[0042] In an implementation form of a second client device according to the second aspect, a received signal strength threshold value increases with an increased speed of the first client device.

[0043] An advantage with this implementation form is that it will help the remote client device to rank a relay client device taking into consideration an increased threshold value with an increased speed such that a stable connection can be maintained. For example, a fast moving relay client device with a momentarily good signal strength of the discovery message is discouraged to be selected in comparison to a stationary or a slow moving relay client device that can provide a stable connection for a longer duration.

[0044] In an implementation form of a second client device according to the second aspect, the second client device is configured to:

[0045] receive a second configuration message from a network access node, the second configuration message indicating the two or more received signal strength threshold values.

[0046] An advantage with this implementation form is that it allows the network to set different thresholds for different mobility states of the relay client device and thus assist the remote client device when ranking the relay client device.

[0047] In an implementation form of a second client device according to the second aspect, the second client device is configured to:

[0048] transmit a notification message to the network access node, the notification message indicating the mobility state of the first client device, and / or the mobility state of the second client device, and / or a relative direction of movement between the first client device and the second client device.

[0049] An advantage with this implementation form is that it will be helpful for the network in the maintenance of the service continuity and faster inter network access node path switching of a connection established for the remote client device.

[0050] In an implementation form of a second client device according to the second aspect, the second client device is configured to:

[0051] transmit the notification message to the network access node when being in an RRC_INACTIVE state or in an RRC_CONNECTED state.

[0052] In an implementation form of a second client device according to the second aspect, the second client device is configured to:

[0053] receive an additional discovery message for the sidelink relay communication procedure from the first client device, the additional discovery message indicating a new mobility state of the first client device; and

[0054] rank the first client device as a candidate relay client device for the sidelink relay connection further based on the new mobility state of the first client device.

[0055] An advantage with this implementation form is that it will allow the relay client device to update its mobility state in the next discovery message transmission following the mobility state change and thus make it possible for the remote client device to consider the mobility state change when re-ranking the relay client device.

[0056] In an implementation form of a second client device according to the second aspect, the second client device is a remote client device in the sidelink relay communication procedure.

[0057] According to a third aspect of the invention, the above mentioned and other objectives are achieved with a network access node configured to:

[0059] transmit a second configuration message for the sidelink relay communication procedure to a second client device, the second configuration message indicating two or more received signal strength threshold values for ranking the first client device as a candidate relay client device for a sidelink relay connection.

[0060] An advantage of the network access node according to the third aspect is that it allows the network to control whether a relay client device can transmit the information about its mobility state or not. Additionally, the network access node allows the network to set different relay selection thresholds for a remote client device depending upon the mobility state of the relay client device.

[0091] The following terminology is used in the present disclosure: U2N remote UE is a UE that communicates with the network via a U2N Relay UE and U2N relay UE i.e., a UE that provides functionality to support connectivity to the network for U2N remote UE.

[0092] Model A and Model B discovery models as defined in TS 23.304 are supported for U2N Relay discovery. The U2N remote UE can perform relay discovery message transmission and may monitor the sidelink for relay discovery message.

[0093] The network may broadcast or configure via dedicated RRC signalling a Uu reference signal received power (RSRP) threshold value, which is used by the U2N remote UE to determine if it can transmit relay discovery messages to U2N relay UE (s) . The network may provide the relay discovery configuration using broadcast or dedicated signalling for relay discovery. In addition, the U2N remote UE and U2N relay UE may use pre-configuration for relay discovery.

[0094] The U2N remote UE performs radio measurements at PC5 interface and uses them for U2N relay selection and reselection along with higher layer criteria, as specified in TS 23.304. When there is no unicast PC5 connection between the U2N relay UE and the U2N remote UE, the U2N remote UE uses sidelink discovery RSRP (SD-RSRP) measurements to evaluate whether PC5 link quality towards a U2N relay UE satisfies relay selection criterion.

[0095] The conventional solutions for ranking relay UEs and selecting a relay UE for establishing or maintaining a connection for a remote UE do not take into account the mobility state or speed or direction of movement into consideration during the ranking and selection of the relay UE. Thus, the optimal relay UE is not selected by the remote UE for establishing or maintaining the connection.

[0096] Therefore, it is herein proposed a generalized solution that makes a remote UE to appropriately select a relay UE among a plurality of candidate relay UEs overcoming the limitations of conventional solutions. Embodiments of the invention address at least the following issues: provide a generalized solution that is backward compatible in terms of the principle used for relaying, UE selection considering relay UE and remote UE’s mobility state, provide a solution with low signalling overhead, provide a solution which can be applied to both U2N relay and U2U relay UE scenarios, and to provide a solution which can be extended and applied to both single hop and multi-hop scenarios for U2N relay and U2U relay UEs.

[0097] Fig. 1 shows a first client device 100 and a second client device 100′ according to an embodiment of the invention. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, the first client device 100 and the second client device 100′ comprises a processor 102, 102′ a transceiver 104, 104′ and a memory 106, 106′. The processor 102, 102′ is coupled to the transceiver 104, 104′ and the memory 106, 106′ by communication means 108, 108′ known in the art. The first client device 100 and the second client device 100′ further comprises an antenna or antenna array 110, 110′ coupled to the transceiver 104, 104′, which means that the first client device 100 and the second client device 100′ is configured for wireless communications in a communication system.

[0099] That the first client device 100 and the second client device 100′ are configured to perform certain actions can in this disclosure be understood to mean that the first client device 100 and the second client device 100′ comprises suitable means, such as e.g., the processor 102, 102′ and the transceiver 104, 104′ configured to perform the actions.

[0100] According to embodiments of the invention the first client device 100 is configured to transmit a discovery message 510 for a sidelink relay communication procedure, the discovery message 510 indicating a mobility state of the first client device 100.

[0103] Fig. 2 shows a flow chart of a corresponding method 200 which may be executed in a first client device 100, such as the one shown in Fig. 1. The method 200 comprises transmitting 202 a discovery message 510 for a sidelink relay communication procedure, the discovery message 510 indicating a mobility state of the first client device 100.

[0104] According to embodiments of the invention the second client device 100′ is configured to receive a discovery message 510 for a sidelink relay communication procedure from a first client device 100, the discovery message 510 indicating a mobility state of the first client device 100; and rank the first client device 100 as a candidate relay client device for a sidelink relay connection based on the mobility state of the first client device 100.

[0105] Furthermore, in an embodiment of the invention, the second client device 100′ for a communication system 500 comprises a transceiver configured to receive a discovery message 510 for a sidelink relay communication procedure from a first client device 100, the discovery message 510 indicating a mobility state of the first client device 100. The second client device 100′ comprises a processor configured to rank the first client device 100 as a candidate relay client device for a sidelink relay connection based on the mobility state of the first client device 100.

[0106] Moreover, in yet another embodiment of the invention, the second client device 100′ for a communication system 500 comprises a processor and a memory having computer readable instructions stored thereon which, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to: receive a discovery message 510 for a sidelink relay communication procedure from a first client device 100, the discovery message 510 indicating a mobility state of the first client device 100; and rank the first client device 100 as a candidate relay client device for a sidelink relay connection based on the mobility state of the first client device 100.

[0107] Fig. 3 shows a flow chart of a corresponding method 200′ which may be executed in a second client device 100′, such as the one shown in Fig. 1. The method 200′ comprises receiving 202′ a discovery message 510 for a sidelink relay communication procedure from a first client device 100, the discovery message 510 indicating a mobility state of the first client  device 100; and ranking 204′ the first client device 100 as a candidate relay client device for a sidelink relay connection based on the mobility state of the first client device 100.

[0108] Fig. 4 shows a network access node 300 according to an embodiment of the invention. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 4, the network access node 300 comprises a processor 302, a transceiver 304 and a memory 306. The processor 302 is coupled to the transceiver 304 and the memory 306 by communication means 308 known in the art. The network access node 300 may be configured for wireless and / or wired communications in a communication system. The wireless communication capability may be provided with an antenna or antenna array 310 coupled to the transceiver 304, while the wired communication capability may be provided with a wired communication interface 312 e.g., coupled to the transceiver 304.

[0109] The processor 302 may be referred to as one or more general-purpose CPU, one or more DSPs, one or more ASICs, one or more FPGAs, one or more programmable logic devices, one or more discrete gates, one or more transistor logic devices, one or more discrete hardware components, one or more chipsets. The memory 306 may be a read-only memory, a RAM, or a NVRAM. The transceiver 304 may be a transceiver circuit, a power controller, or an interface providing capability to communicate with other communication modules or communication devices, such as network nodes and network servers. The transceiver 304, the memory 306 and / or the processor 302 may be implemented in separate chipsets or may be implemented in a common chipset.

[0110] That the network access node 300 is configured to perform certain actions can in this disclosure be understood to mean that the network access node 300 comprises suitable means, such as e.g., the processor 302 and the transceiver 304, configured to perform the actions.

[0111] According to embodiments of the invention the network access node 300 is configured to transmit a first configuration message 520 for a sidelink relay communication procedure to a first client device 100, the first configuration message 520 indicating an activation or a deactivation of indicating a mobility state of the first client device 100 in a discovery message 510; and / or transmit a second configuration message 530 for the sidelink relay communication procedure to a second client device 100′, the second configuration message 530 indicating two or more received signal strength threshold values for ranking the first client device 100 as a candidate relay client device for a sidelink relay connection.

[0112] Furthermore, in an embodiment of the invention, the network access node 300 for a communication system 500 comprises a transceiver configured to: transmit a first configuration message 520 for a sidelink relay communication procedure to a first client device 100, the first configuration message 520 indicating an activation or a deactivation of indicating a mobility state of the first client device 100 in a discovery message 510; and / or transmit a second configuration message 530 for the sidelink relay communication procedure to a second client device 100′, the second configuration message 530 indicating two or more received signal strength threshold values for ranking the first client device 100 as a candidate relay client device for a sidelink relay connection.

[0113] Moreover, in yet another embodiment of the invention, the network access node 300 for a communication system 500 comprises a processor and a memory having computer readable instructions stored thereon which, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to: transmit a first configuration message 520 for a sidelink relay communication procedure to a first client device 100, the first configuration message 520 indicating an activation or a deactivation of indicating a mobility state of the first client device 100 in a discovery message 510; and / or transmit a second configuration message 530 for the sidelink relay communication procedure to a second client device 100′, the second configuration message 530 indicating two or more received signal strength threshold values for ranking the first client device 100 as a candidate relay client device for a sidelink relay connection.

[0114] Fig. 5 shows a flow chart of a corresponding method 400 which may be executed in a network access node 300, such as the one shown in Fig. 4. The method 400 comprises transmitting 402 a first configuration message 520 for a sidelink relay communication procedure to a first client device 100, the first configuration message 520 indicating an activation or a deactivation of indicating a mobility state of the first client device 100 in a discovery message 510; and / or transmitting 404 a second configuration message 530 for the sidelink relay communication procedure to a second client device 100′, the second configuration message 530 indicating two or more received signal strength threshold values for ranking the first client device 100 as a candidate relay client device for a sidelink relay connection.

[0115] Fig. 6 shows a communication system 500 according to embodiments of the invention. The communication system 500 in the disclosed example shows two first client devices 100, a second client device 100′, and a network access node 300 configured to communicate and operate in the communication system 500. The network access node 300 may be connected to a network NW such as e.g., a core network over a communication interface.

[0116] The two first client devices 100 are in this exemplary scenario acting as candidate relay client devices for a sidelink (SL) relay connection of a sidelink relay communication procedure. The second client device 100′ on the other hand act as a remote client device in the sidelink relay communication procedure. Thus, the first client devices 100 have established connection with the network access node 300 and the second client device 100′ ranks multiple candidate relay client devices for selection of a relay client device to establish and maintain a stable connection to a network, such as a RAN, via the selected relay client device when needed. It is noted that the same client device may act as a relay client device in some scenarios and as a remote client device in other scenarios.

[0117] The communication system 500 may be a communication system according to the 3GPP standard such as e.g., a 5G system in which case the client devices may be a user equipment (UE) and the network access node 300 may be a next generation node B (gNB) but the invention is not limited thereto. Hence, a first client device 100 will also be denoted a relay UE 100 and a second client device 100′ will also be denoted a remote UE 100′.

[0118] The proposed solution provides an enhanced and generalized solution considering the mobility state of a relay UE 100 for ranking. Hence, the relay UE 100 for ranking transmits a discovery message 510 indicating a mobility state of the relay UE 100 in the communication system 500. The remote UE′ 100 after having ranked a set of relay UEs into a set of candidate relay UEs selects a relay UE 100 among the set of candidate relay UEs for establishing or maintaining a connection to the network. Thus, according to embodiments of the invention the second client device 100′ as a remote UE 100′ is also configured to select a relay UE 100 among a set of candidate relay UEs 100 for establishing or maintain a connection to a network e.g., via a gNB 300.

[0119] The remote UE 100′ can also use its own mobility state when ranking relay UEs as candidate relay UEs for the sidelink relay connection. The mobility state of the remote UE 100′ can be categorised in the same way as the mobility state of the relay UE 100. Thus, in embodiments of the invention the mobility state of the relay UE 100 and / or the mobility state of the remote UE 100′ are any of: a stationary state, a normal state, a medium state and a high state. The state may refer to a speed with which the UE is moving and different mobility states thus refers to different speeds. The stationary mobility state could be used based on subscription information and / or measurements performed by the relay UE 100 in addition to normal / medium / high states as defined in section 5.2.4.3 of TS 38.304.

[0120] For ranking the relay UE 100, the remote UE 100′ may also use a measured received signal power of the discovery message 510 received from the relay UE 100. Thus, the remote UE 100′ may rank the relay UE 100 as a candidate relay UE for the sidelink relay connection further based on a measured received signal power of the discovery message 510. It is noted that the remote UE 100′ may measure a plurality of discovery message 510 transmitted by the relay UE 100 during a time period.

[0121] Table 1 in Fig. 7 illustrates ranking of relay UEs (column 3) based on the mobility state of the relay UE (column 2) , the mobility state of the remote UE (column 1) , and measured received power of the discovery message 510 (column 4) . The ranking of the relay UEs can be defined as low, medium, high and highest as shown in column 3. Based on the ranking, the remote UE 100′ can select a candidate relay UE for establishing or maintaining a connection to the network.

[0122] Table 1 also illustrates the example when additional measurements for the same relay UE are needed for ranking the relay UE as shown in the rightmost column in Table 1. For this, the discovery procedure can be repeated by both the relay UE 100 and the remote UE 100′. Hence multiple samples / measurements can be collected by the remote UE 100′ for a specific candidate relay UE to determine change in the signal strength in the discovery message 510 transmitted by the relay UE 100. This procedure may be performed periodically during a time period and may be defined by a timer parameter defining a time value. Thus, column 4 also states whether there is a need for additional SD-RSRP samples for the same candidate relay UE. If “Yes” additional SD-RSRP measurements are needed and the ranking is determined if the SD-RSRP reduces, increases or remains the same over a time period and possibly the derivate and / or the amount of the changes of the SD-RSRP measurements. From the remote UE′s 100′ point of view as long as the SD / SL-RSRP value is higher than a single relay selection threshold, the candidate relay UEs can be ranked for relay selection based on the mobility state in the discovery messages as seen in Table 1.

[0123] In embodiments of the invention, the mobility state of the first client device 100 further indicates a direction of movement of the relay UE 100. The direction of movement may be expressed and defined in different ways. The direction of movement may be given as North, South, West and East and as intermediates of the previous such as North-West and South-East, etc. The UE speed and direction of movement may be estimated via e.g., GPS information and / or sensor information obtain from internal sensors.

[0124] Thus, the remote UE 100′ may rank the relay UE 100 as a candidate relay UE for the sidelink relay connection further based on its own direction of movement. In examples, the directions of movement of the relay UE 100 and the remote UE 100′ may be considered directly when ranking the relay UE 100.

[0125] However, in other examples a relative direction of movement (RDM) between the relay UE 100 and the remote UE 100′ may be used for ranking. The RMD may e.g., be given as “moving away” , “moving towards” , and “moving together” with reference to the movement of the relay UE 100 and the remote UE 100′. The RDM may be determined by the remote UE 100′ e.g., the remote UE 100′ can determine the RDM based on GPS information and / or sensor information. For the case when the relay UE 100 and the remote UE 100′ so to speak “moves together” this can also be determined based on SL-RSRP fluctuations over a period of time. For other cases RDM can be determined as “moving away” when the distance between the two UEs is increasing, and “moving towards” when the distance between the two UEs is reducing.

[0126] Table 2 in Fig. 8 illustrates ranking of relay UE (column 4) based on the mobility state of the relay UE 100 (column 2) , the mobility state of the remote UE 100′ (column 1) , measured received power of the discovery message 510, and the RDM between the relay UE 100 and the remote UE 100′ (column 3 and 5) . From the remote UE′s 100′ point of view as long as the SD / SL-RSRP value is higher than a single relay selection threshold, the candidate relay UEs can be ranked for relay selection based on mobility state and direction information in the discovery messages as seen in Table 2.

[0127] Furthermore, there can be different relay selection thresholds configured by the network depending upon the mobility state of the relay UE 100. In such cases the remote UE 100′ may rank the relay UE 100 as a candidate relay UE 100′ for the sidelink relay connection further based on two or more received signal strength threshold values, and each received signal strength threshold value being associated with a mobility state of the relay UE 100.

[0128] In embodiments of the invention a received signal strength threshold value increases with an increased speed of the relay UE 100. This means that the threshold value is higher for higher speed and lower for lower speed. For example, for medium / high mobility state relay UEs, relay UE selection threshold may be set to a higher value while for normal mobility state UEs the threshold value may be lower. The relay UE 100 can apply these threshold values in conjunction with the mobility state of the relay UE 100 and rank the candidate relay UE 100 accordingly. The ranking performed by the remote UE 100′ with different threshold values  can be similar as for a single threshold value. Multiple relay UE selection threshold values configured for different mobility states of the relay UE 100 may further depend on the cell size where the threshold values are valid. For example, for small cells the threshold values may be more restrictive while for large cells the threshold values can be more relaxed, where restrictive means a higher value and relaxed means a lower value.

[0129] The received signal strength threshold values can be signalled in a second configuration message 530 from a gNB 300 to the remote UE 100′ as shown in the signalling diagram of Fig. 10. There can be different relay selection thresholds configured by the network depending on the mobility state of the relay UE 100. Table 3 in Fig. 9 illustrates an example of correspondence between the mobility state and the threshold value. For example, a high mobility state may correspond to a highest threshold value while a stationary mobility state may correspond to a lowest threshold value.

[0130] Moreover, Fig. 10 shows a signalling diagram showing exemplary interaction between a gNB 300, a relay UE 100 and a remote UE 100′. In embodiments of the invention, when providing the discovery procedure related configuration, the gNB 300 may indicate whether UE mobility state can be included by relay UEs or not.

[0131] Thus, in step 1 in Fig. 10, the gNB 300 transmits a first configuration message 520 for a sidelink relay communication procedure to a relay UE 100. The first configuration message 520 indicates an activation or a deactivation of indicating a mobility state of the relay UE 100 in a discovery message 510.

[0132] This means that the relay UE 100 receives such a first configuration message 520 from the gNB 300 and if the first configuration message 520 indicates an activation, the relay UE 100 transmits discovery message 510, while if the first configuration message 520 indicates a deactivation, the relay UE 100 refrains from transmitting the discovery message 510. Thus, an activation / deactivation mechanism is provided regarding the discovery message 510.

[0133] The relay UE 100 upon receiving the first configuration message 520 derives the control information in the first configuration message 520, i.e., activation or deactivation of indicating the mobility state. If first configuration message 520 indicates activation the relay UE 100 transmits a discovery message 510 according to embodiments of the invention as shown in step 4 in Fig. 10.

[0134] In step 2 in Fig. 10, the gNB 300 transmits a second configuration message 530 for the sidelink relay communication procedure to the remote UE 100′. The second configuration message 530 indicates two or more received signal strength threshold values for ranking the relay UE 100 as a candidate relay UE for the sidelink relay connection. Hence, the remote UE 100′ receives the second configuration message 530 from the gNB 300.

[0135] In step 3 in Fig. 10, the remote UE 100′ transmits a notification message 540 to the gNB 300. The notification message 540 indicates one or more of: the mobility state of the relay UE 100, the mobility state of the remote UE 100′, and a RDM between the relay UE 100 and the remote UE 100′.

[0136] In embodiments of the invention, the remote UE 100′ transmits the notification message 540 to the gNB 300 when being in an RRC_INACTIVE state or in an RRC_CONNECTED state. In the RRC_INACTIVE or in RRC_CONNECTED state the remote UE 100′ may indicate the mobility states of both the remote UE 100′ and the selected relay UE 100 to the gNB 300 including possible additional information, such as RDM, which will be helpful for the network in the maintenance of the service continuity in ongoing connections, and faster inter gNB path switching of the connection.

[0137] The gNB 300 upon receiving the notification message 540 may thus use such information for the maintenance of the service continuity and faster inter gNB path switching of the connection as previously mentioned. The gNB 300 may also perform early preparation of a target gNB to receive this connection based on the information in the notification message 540. For example, the source gNB that is currently handling the ongoing connection for the remote UE 100′ will prepare the target gNB for the handover of the ongoing connection to avoid handover failure.

[0138] In step 4 in Fig. 10, as aforementioned the relay UE 100 transmits a discovery message 510 to the remote UE 100′. Generally, the discovery message 510 is broadcasted in the communication system 500 and can therefore be received by a plurality of remote UEs. However, the discovery message 510 may also be unicasted or multi-casted in the communication system 500 depending on the scenario and application.

[0139] In step 5 in Fig. 10, the relay UE 100 in embodiments of the invention, transmits one or more additional discovery messages 510′ for the sidelink relay communication procedure upon changing the mobility state to a new mobility state. For example, the relay UE 100 may change state from normal mobility state to high mobility state and so on. Also, the direction of  movement of the relay UE 100 may change and thus being reported to the remote UE 100′. Hence, the additional discovery message 510′ indicates the new mobility state of the relay UE 100.

[0140] Thus, the remote UE 100′ receives the additional discovery message 510′ from the relay UE 100. The remote UE 100′ uses the information in the additional discovery message 510′ for ranking or re-ranking the relay UE 100 as a candidate relay UE. Thus, the remote UE 100′ may take into consideration the new mobility state of the candidate relay UE while calculating the relative mobility between the candidate relay UE and the remote UE 100′ and the ranking of the candidate relay UE. The remote UE 100 may also consider further samples to measure SD-RSRP with the updated new mobility state to determine the ranking of the candidate relay UE and discard the previous SD-RSRP measurements for the old mobility state of the relay UE 100.

[0141] The proposed solution can as mentioned be applied to any single hop and multi-hop U2N relay scenarios in e.g., 3GPP Re-19. The proposed solution can be extended to U2U relay with single or multi-hop scenarios where the mobility state of the U2U relay UE can be determined via GPS or some other methods. The herein disclosed solution can easily be extended for relay selection in multi-hop U2N relay scenarios. Further, the disclosed solution can also be applied to U2U relay selection for the source and the destination remote UEs in the U2U relay scenario where the only difference is that the U2U relay UE can be out of coverage and can use UE velocity estimated via GPS or some other method for including the mobility state in the discovery message 510. The herein disclosed solution will also be helpful for maintaining service continuity in multi-hop U2U relay scenarios. The relay UE 100 may also determine its mobility state using additional methods such as:

[0142] ● Low mobility evaluation criterion, cell edge evaluation criterion or a combination thereof, as described in section 5.2.4.9 of TS 38.304.

[0143] ● Radio link monitoring / beam failure detection (RLM / BFD) relaxation criteria used for on UE power saving enhancements for NR.

[0144] ● SSB / cell RSRP fluctuations measured over a specified time period.

[0145] The remote UE 100′ can also use these methods if the remote UE 100′ is in coverage.

[0146] A client device herein may be denoted as a user device, a user equipment (UE) , a mobile station, an internet of things (IoT) device, a sensor device, a wireless terminal and / or a mobile terminal, and is enabled to communicate wirelessly in a wireless communication system, sometimes also referred to as a cellular radio system. The UEs may further be referred to as mobile telephones, cellular telephones, computer tablets or laptops with  wireless capability. The UEs in this context may be, for example, portable, pocket-storable, hand-held, computer-comprised, or vehicle-mounted mobile devices, enabled to communicate voice and / or data, via a radio access network (RAN) , with another communication entity, such as another receiver or a server. The UE may further be a station, which is any device that contains an IEEE 802.11-conformant media access control (MAC) and physical layer (PHY) interface to the wireless medium (WM) . The UE may be configured for communication in 3GPP related long term evolution (LTE) , LTE-advanced, fifth generation (5G) wireless systems, such as new radio (NR) , and their evolutions, as well as in IEEE related Wi-Fi, worldwide interoperability for microwave access (WiMAX) and their evolutions.

[0147] The network access node herein may also be denoted as a radio network access node, an access network access node, an access point (AP) , or a base station (BS) , e.g., a radio base station (RBS) , which in some networks may be referred to as transmitter, “gNB” , “gNodeB” , “eNB” , “eNodeB” , “NodeB” or “B node” , depending on the standard, technology and terminology used. The radio network access nodes may be of different classes or types such as e.g., macro eNodeB, home eNodeB or pico base station, based on transmission power and thereby the cell size. The radio network access node may further be a station, which is any device that contains an IEEE 802.11-conformant MAC and PHY interface to the WM. The radio network access node may be configured for communication in 3GPP related LTE, LTE-advanced, 5G wireless systems, such as NR and their evolutions, as well as in IEEE related Wi-Fi, WiMAX and their evolutions.

[0148] Furthermore, any method according to embodiments of the invention may be implemented in a computer program, having code means, which when run by processing means causes the processing means to execute the steps of the method. The computer program is included in a computer readable medium of a computer program product. The computer readable medium may comprise essentially any memory, such as previously mentioned a ROM, a PROM, an EPROM, a flash memory, an EEPROM, or a hard disk drive.

[0149] Moreover, it should be realized that the client device and the network access node comprise the necessary communication capabilities in the form of e.g., functions, means, units, elements, etc., for performing or implementing embodiments of the invention. Examples of other such means, units, elements and functions are: processors, memory, buffers, control logic, encoders, decoders, rate matchers, de-rate matchers, mapping units, multipliers, decision units, selecting units, switches, interleavers, de-interleavers, modulators, demodulators, inputs, outputs, antennas, amplifiers, receiver units, transmitter units, DSPs,  TCM encoder, TCM decoder, power supply units, power feeders, communication interfaces, communication protocols, etc. which are suitably arranged together for performing the solution.

[0150] Therefore, the processor (s) of the client device and the network access node may comprise, e.g., one or more instances of a CPU, a processing unit, a processing circuit, a processor, an ASIC, a microprocessor, or other processing logic that may interpret and execute instructions. The expression “processor” may thus represent a processing circuitry comprising a plurality of processing circuits, such as e.g., any, some or all of the ones mentioned above. The processing circuitry may further perform data processing functions for inputting, outputting, and processing of data comprising data buffering and device control functions, such as call processing control, user interface control, or the like.

[0151] Finally, it should be understood that the invention is not limited to the embodiments described above, but also relates to and incorporates all embodiments within the scope of the appended independent claims.
