Battery pack and device including same

[0001] Cross-citation with related application(s)

[0002] This application claims the benefit of priority to Korean Patent Application No. 10-2023-0106184, filed August 14, 2023, the entire contents of which are incorporated herein by reference.

[0003] The present invention relates to a battery pack and a device including the same, and more particularly, to a battery pack and a device including the same, which includes at least one foamed silicone part positioned in a case of a battery blocking unit, thereby preventing direct exposure to or contact with a high-temperature environment for battery blocking when a thermal runaway phenomenon occurs inside the battery pack.

[0004] Secondary batteries, which boast high electrical properties such as high energy density and easy applicability across a wide range of product groups, are widely used not only in portable devices but also in electric or hybrid vehicles powered by electrical power sources, as well as in power storage devices. These batteries are attracting attention as a new energy source for environmental friendliness and energy efficiency, not only for their primary advantage of dramatically reducing fossil fuel use, but also because they produce no byproducts from energy use.

[0005] Currently commercialized secondary batteries include nickel-cadmium batteries, nickel-hydrogen batteries, nickel-zinc batteries, and lithium secondary batteries. Among these, lithium secondary batteries are receiving attention for their advantages of being able to charge and discharge freely, having a very low self-discharge rate, and having a high energy density, as they have almost no memory effect compared to nickel-based secondary batteries.

[0006] In general, lithium secondary batteries can be classified into cylindrical or square secondary batteries in which the electrode assembly is built into a metal can, and pouch-type secondary batteries in which the electrode assembly is built into a pouch of an aluminum laminate sheet, depending on the shape of the outer packaging material.

[0007] Recently, with the growing need for large-capacity secondary battery structures, including the increasing use of secondary batteries as energy storage sources, demand is growing for battery packs with medium- to large-sized modular structures, which are composed of multiple secondary batteries connected in series or parallel. These battery modules, in which multiple battery cells are connected in series or parallel to form a battery cell stack, offer increased capacity and output. Furthermore, multiple battery modules can be mounted with various control and protection systems, such as a Battery Management System (BMS) and a cooling system, to form a battery pack.

[0008] In particular, the battery pack includes a battery disconnected unit (BDU) installed between the power conversion device of the device in which the battery pack is mounted and the battery module. Here, the battery disconnected unit can secure the safety of the battery pack by disconnecting the power of the battery when an abnormal situation such as overcurrent, overheating, or thermal runaway occurs.

[0009] However, in the case of abnormal situations such as overcurrent, overheating, and thermal runaway as described above, a fire may occur inside the battery pack, and the case of the battery disconnect unit may be destroyed in an ultra-high temperature environment of 1200 degrees Celsius or higher, such as a fire. In this way, if the case of the battery disconnect unit is destroyed, there is a high possibility that an electrical short circuit will occur between the electrical components and bus bars inside the battery disconnect unit and the surrounding pack structures or other electrical components. In addition, if an electrical short circuit occurs between the electrical components and bus bars inside the battery disconnect unit and the surrounding pack structures or other electrical components, an electrical closed circuit is formed inside the battery pack, which may accelerate thermal propagation or thermal runaway phenomena inside the battery pack.

[0010] Accordingly, there is an increasing need to develop a battery pack that can prevent the occurrence of the electrical short-circuit phenomenon described above by preventing the case of the battery blocking unit from being directly exposed to a high-temperature environment even if an abnormal situation occurs inside the battery pack, and can secure a time for the safety items inside the battery pack to operate.

[0011] The problem to be solved by the present invention is to provide a battery pack and a device including the same, which includes at least one foamed silicone part located in the case of the battery blocking unit, thereby preventing the battery blocking unit from being directly exposed to or in contact with a high-temperature environment when a thermal runaway phenomenon occurs inside the battery pack.

[0012] The problems to be solved by the present invention are not limited to the problems described above, and problems not mentioned can be clearly understood by a person having ordinary skill in the art to which the present invention pertains from this specification and the attached drawings.

[0013] According to one embodiment of the present invention, a battery pack comprises: a pack frame having a plurality of battery modules mounted thereon; a battery disconnect unit (BDU) positioned inside the pack frame and electrically connected to the plurality of battery modules; and at least one foamed silicone part positioned in a case of the battery disconnect unit, wherein, in a high-temperature environment inside the pack frame, a foamed silicone material included in the foamed silicone part exposed to the high-temperature environment inside the pack frame expands toward the outside of the case.

[0014] The above battery blocking unit may have a silicone expansion portion formed in which the silicone foam material included in the silicone foam portion expands toward the outside of the case in a high-temperature environment inside the pack frame, and the silicone expansion portion may extend along the outer surface of the case.

[0015] The above silicone expansion member may be located between the outer surface of the case and the pack frame or between the outer surface of the case and the battery module.

[0016] In the above case, the at least one foamed silicone part may be positioned adjacent to the plurality of battery modules.

[0017] In the above case, the at least one foamed silicone part may be respectively disposed on the upper and lower portions of the case.

[0018] The above foamed silicone part is formed by injecting a foamed silicone material into the inside of the case, and a part of the foamed silicone part may be exposed to the outer surface of the case.

[0019] The above foamed silicone part may be formed in an inverted T shape in the case.

[0020] The above case may be made of plastic or aluminum material.

[0021] The above battery disconnect unit may include at least one relay component and a bus bar electrically connecting the relay components.

[0022] The at least one foamed silicone portion may be spaced apart from each other along the outer surface of the case.

[0023] The at least one foamed silicone part may include at least one first foamed silicone part each disposed on the lower portion of the case and at least one second foamed silicone part each disposed on the upper portion of the case.

[0024] The above battery blocking unit may be arranged such that the at least one second foamed silicone portion faces the plurality of battery modules.

[0025] The number of the at least one second foamed silicone part may be greater than the number of the at least one first foamed silicone part.

[0026] A device according to another embodiment of the present invention includes the battery pack described above.

[0027] According to embodiments, the present invention relates to a battery pack including at least one foamed silicone part positioned in a case of a battery disconnect unit and a device including the same, which can prevent the battery disconnect unit from being directly exposed to or in contact with a high-temperature environment when a thermal runaway phenomenon occurs inside the battery pack.

[0028] The effects of the present invention are not limited to the effects described above, and effects not mentioned can be clearly understood by a person having ordinary skill in the art to which the present invention pertains from this specification and the attached drawings.

[0029] FIG. 1 is a cross-sectional view schematically showing a battery disconnect unit (BDU) according to one embodiment of the present invention.

[0030] Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross-sectional view of a part of Fig. 1.

[0031] FIG. 3 is a schematic top view of a battery pack including the battery disconnect unit of FIG. 1, in a normal state.

[0032] FIG. 4 is a schematic top view of a battery pack including the battery blocking unit of FIG. 1, in which a thermal runaway phenomenon occurs in some battery modules.

[0033] Hereinafter, various embodiments of the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the attached drawings so that those skilled in the art can easily implement the invention. The present invention may be implemented in various different forms and is not limited to the embodiments described herein.

[0034] In order to clearly explain the present invention, parts that are not related to the description are omitted, and the same reference numerals are used for identical or similar components throughout the specification.

[0035] Furthermore, the sizes and thicknesses of each component shown in the drawings are arbitrarily indicated for convenience of explanation, and thus the present invention is not necessarily limited to the illustrated components. In the drawings, the thicknesses are enlarged to clearly represent various layers and regions. Furthermore, in the drawings, the thicknesses of some layers and regions are exaggerated for convenience of explanation.

[0036] Additionally, throughout the specification, whenever a part is said to “include” a component, this does not mean that it excludes other components, but rather that it may include other components, unless otherwise specifically stated.

[0037] Additionally, throughout the specification, when we say "in plan", we mean when the target portion is viewed from above, and when we say "in cross section", we mean when the target portion is viewed from the side in a cross-section cut vertically.

[0038] Hereinafter, a battery disconnect unit (BDU, 100) according to one embodiment of the present invention will be described.

[0039] Fig. 1 is a schematic cross-sectional view of a battery disconnect unit (BDU) according to one embodiment of the present invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross-sectional view of a portion of Fig. 1.

[0040] Referring to FIGS. 1 and 2, a battery disconnect unit (100) according to one embodiment of the present invention may include at least one relay component (110) and a bus bar (120) electrically connecting the relay components (110).

[0041] The relay component (110) may be a power relay assembly (PRA) that stably supplies or cuts off high-voltage battery power to an external device. Here, the relay component (110) may be electrically connected to a terminal of a battery pack (1000, FIG. 3) and a power transmission system of an external device, and may be controlled by a battery management system (BMS) or a vehicle control module (VCM).

[0042] The busbar (120) may be a high-voltage busbar that electrically connects adjacent relay components (110) in a high-voltage environment, or electrically connects the relay components (110) to the terminals of the battery pack (1000, FIG. 3) and / or the power transmission system of an external device. For example, the busbar (120) may be a metal plate having electrical conductivity.

[0043] In addition, although not shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, the battery disconnect unit (100) may be combined with a current sensor, fuse, etc. in addition to the relay component (110) and bus bar (120).

[0044] The battery disconnect unit (100) includes a case (130) of the battery disconnect unit, and at least one relay component (110) and bus bar (120) described above can be accommodated inside the case (130).

[0045] The case (130) may include a lower case (131) and an upper case (135), and internal components such as a relay component (110) and a bus bar (120) may be mounted inside the lower case (131), and the internal components may be covered by the upper case (135). For example, the lower case (131) and the upper case (135) may be fixed to each other by a separate fastening method such as welding or bonding.

[0046] For example, the case (130) may be made of plastic or aluminum. However, the present invention is not limited thereto, and the case (130) may be made of a heat-resistant or fire-resistant material that is not easily destroyed in a high-temperature environment, such as a fire occurring inside a battery pack (1000, FIG. 3) in which a battery disconnect unit (100) is mounted.

[0047] The battery disconnect unit (100) includes at least one foamed silicone part (140) positioned in the case (130). The at least one foamed silicone part (140) may be spaced apart from each other along the outer surface of the case (130).

[0048] More specifically, the foamed silicone part (140) may include at least one first foamed silicone part (141) and at least one second foamed silicone part (145). Here, at least one first foamed silicone part (141) may be disposed in each lower case (131), and at least one second foamed silicone part (145) may be disposed in each upper case (135).

[0049] For example, at least one foamed silicone part (140) may be disposed on the lower surface of the lower case (131) and the upper surface of the upper case (135) as shown in FIG. 1. However, this is not limited thereto, and unlike FIG. 1, they may also be disposed on the side surface of the lower case (131) and the side surface of the upper case (135), respectively.

[0050] The foamed silicone part (140) is formed by injecting a foamed silicone material into the interior of the case (130), and a part of the foamed silicone part (140) may be exposed to the outer surface of the case (130).

[0051] More specifically, an area that is sunken into the interior of the case (130) may be formed on the outer surface of the case (130). For example, the area that is sunken into the interior of the case (130) may be formed by a method such as injection molding the case (130).

[0052] A foamed silicone material can be injected into a region sunken into the case (130) formed in this manner, and the foamed silicone can be injected in an amount sufficient to expose the outer surface of the case (130).

[0053] Here, when the foamed silicone part (140) is directly exposed to a high-temperature environment such as flame or fire, the foamed silicone material contained in the foamed silicone part (140) may be ceramicized. At this time, the ceramicized foamed silicone may swell to about 4 to 5 times its original volume. In addition, the ceramicized foamed silicone has a relatively very low hardness, so that even if the volume increases relatively, it may not damage other components outside the case (130).

[0054] For example, the foamed silicone part (140) is formed of foamed silicone containing glass fibers. Here, the foamed silicone may refer to a composition in which a blowing agent is included in the silicone composition. However, the present invention is not limited thereto, and any material that can expand in a high-temperature environment, such as a flame or fire generated inside the battery pack (1000, FIG. 3), may be applied to the present embodiment.

[0055] Accordingly, the battery disconnect unit (100) according to the present embodiment includes a foam silicone material that can expand in a high-temperature environment, in which the foam silicone part (140) formed in the case (130) is formed, so that the battery disconnect unit (100) can be protected in a high-temperature environment such as a flame or fire. In particular, since the hardness of the expanded foam silicone material in the foam silicone part (140) is relatively low, the battery disconnect unit (100) can be safely protected without damaging other components outside the case (130).

[0056] For example, as shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, the foamed silicone part (140) may be formed in an inverted T shape in the case (130). However, this is not limited to this, and any shape capable of accommodating the foamed silicone material inside the case (130) may be applied to the present embodiment.

[0057] Accordingly, the battery blocking unit (100) according to the present embodiment can accommodate a foamed silicone material sufficient to cover the outer surface of the case (130) as the foamed silicone part (140) has the above-described shape, so that the battery blocking unit (100) can be effectively protected in a high-temperature environment such as a flame or fire.

[0058] Referring to FIG. 2, FIG. 2(a) is a drawing showing the second foamed silicone part (145) in a normal environment inside the pack frame (2000, FIG. 3), and FIG. 2(b) is a drawing showing the second foamed silicone part (145) in a high-temperature environment inside the pack frame (2000, FIG. 3).

[0059] Although FIG. 2 is illustrated with the upper case (135) and the second foamed silicone part (145) as the center, the same explanation can be given for the lower case (131) and the first foamed silicone part (141), and for convenience of explanation, the explanation will be given below with the upper case (135) and the second foamed silicone part (145) as the center.

[0060] Referring to FIG. 2(b), the battery disconnect unit (100) may have a silicone expansion portion (145P) formed in which the foamed silicone material included in the second foamed silicone portion (145) expands toward the outside of the upper case (135) in a high-temperature environment inside the pack frame (2000, FIG. 3). More specifically, the silicone expansion portion (145P) may extend along the outer surface of the upper case (135).

[0061] Here, the high temperature environment inside the pack frame (2000, FIG. 3) may be an environment in which the temperature inside the pack frame (2000, FIG. 3) is increased due to phenomena such as overcurrent, overheating, and thermal runaway of a plurality of battery modules (200) mounted together inside the battery pack (1000, FIG. 3). More specifically, the high temperature environment inside the pack frame (2000, FIG. 3) may mean an environment in which a fire occurs through a cell event such as a thermal runaway phenomenon in a battery cell located inside the battery pack (1000, FIG. 3), and some of the internal components of the pack frame (2000, FIG. 3) are exposed to flames. For example, the high temperature environment inside the pack frame (2000, FIG. 3) may be an environment heated to a temperature of 400 degrees Celsius or higher, which is a temperature at which some of the internal components of the pack frame (2000, FIG. 3) may be destroyed by flames. In other words, the high temperature environment inside the pack frame (2000, Fig. 3) may mean an ultra-high temperature environment that rapidly rises to a temperature exceeding 1200 degrees Celsius.

[0062] Accordingly, the battery blocking unit (100) according to the present embodiment has a foamed silicone part (140) formed in the case (130), and a silicone expansion part (145P) formed on the outer surface of the case (130) in a high-temperature environment inside the pack frame (2000, FIG. 3), so as to protect the case (130) in a high-temperature environment such as a fire occurring inside the battery pack (1000, FIG. 3).

[0063] That is, the silicone expansion member (145P) can prevent direct contact between the components inside the case (130) and the pack frame (2000, FIG. 3), thereby preventing a heat transfer phenomenon due to thermal contact between the components inside the case (130) and the pack frame (2000, FIG. 3) or an electrical short phenomenon due to electrical contact.

[0064] Hereinafter, a battery pack (1000) according to one embodiment of the present invention will be described.

[0065] Fig. 3 is a schematic top view of a battery pack including the battery disconnect unit of Fig. 1, in a normal state. Fig. 4 is a schematic top view of a battery pack including the battery disconnect unit of Fig. 1, in a case where a thermal runaway phenomenon has occurred in some battery modules.

[0066] Referring to FIG. 3, a battery pack (1000) according to one embodiment of the present invention includes a pack frame (2000) in which a plurality of battery modules (200) are mounted, and a battery disconnect unit (100) electrically connected to the plurality of battery modules (200) may be positioned inside the pack frame (2000).

[0067] Here, the pack frame (2000) may include a lower pack frame (not shown) on which a plurality of battery modules (200) are mounted, and an upper pack frame (not shown) positioned above the battery modules (200). More specifically, the upper pack frame may cover the upper portion of the lower pack frame while the plurality of battery modules (200) are mounted on the lower pack frame. Here, the lower pack frame and the upper pack frame may be joined to each other by a method such as welding or adhesion, thereby sealing the inside of the battery pack (1000).

[0068] For example, the pack frame (2000) may be formed of an insulating material. For example, the pack frame (2000) may be formed of an aluminum extrusion structure. As another example, the pack frame (2000) may be formed of a dissimilar metal bonding material such as a clad metal, or may be a structure including an insulating material such as an aerogel or an EPP (Expanded Polypropylene) foam. As another example, the pack frame (2000) may be a structure including a material such as a silicone foam, mica, or a glass fiber pad. However, the present invention is not limited thereto, and the pack frame (2000) may be used without limitation as long as it is formed of an insulating material having a predetermined rigidity.

[0069] A plurality of battery modules (200) can form a packaged battery module array (300). In the battery module array (300), the arrangement of the plurality of battery modules (200) is not limited to the arrangement shown in FIGS. 3 and 4, and various arrangement forms can be considered depending on the shape of the pack frame (2000).

[0070] The battery module (200) includes a battery cell stack (not shown) in which a plurality of battery cells are stacked, and a module frame (not shown) that accommodates the battery cell stack (not shown).

[0071] The above battery cell is preferably a pouch-type battery cell. For example, the battery cell can be manufactured by housing the electrode assembly in a pouch case made of a laminate sheet including a resin layer and an inner layer, and then heat-sealing the sealing portion of the pouch case. The battery cell can be formed in a rectangular sheet-like structure. The battery cell can be composed of a plurality of battery cells, and the plurality of battery cells are stacked so as to be electrically connected to each other to form a battery cell stack (not shown). Here, the number of battery cells constituting the battery cell stack (not shown) can be adjusted as needed.

[0072] The above module frame (not shown) may include an upper cover and a U-shaped frame. Here, the U-shaped frame may include a bottom portion and two side portions extending upward from both ends of the bottom portion. At this time, the bottom portion may cover a lower surface of a battery cell stack (not shown), and the side portions may cover a side surface of the battery cell stack (not shown). The upper cover and the U-shaped frame may be joined by welding or the like in a state where corresponding corner portions are in contact with each other, thereby forming a structure that covers the upper, lower, left, and right sides of the battery cell stack (not shown). To this end, the upper cover and the U-shaped frame may be made of a metal material having a predetermined strength.

[0073] However, the structure of the module frame (not shown) is not limited thereto, and in another embodiment, the module frame (not shown) may have a monoframe structure. Here, the monoframe may be in the form of a metal plate in which the upper surface, lower surface, and both sides are integrated. The monoframe may be manufactured by extrusion molding. In addition, the structure of the module frame (not shown) may be provided as an L-shaped frame structure in addition to a monoframe or a U-shaped frame, and may also be provided in various structures not described in the above-described examples.

[0074] In addition, the battery module (200) further includes a busbar frame positioned on the front and rear sides of the battery cell stack (not shown) and an end plate covering the busbar frame. Here, a busbar (not shown) electrically connected to the battery cell stack (not shown) may be positioned on the busbar frame. Accordingly, the end plate can physically protect the battery cell stack (not shown) and other electrical components from external impact.

[0075] Referring to FIG. 3, the battery blocking unit (100) may have at least one second foamed silicone part (145) arranged in a direction facing the plurality of battery modules (200). In other words, in the case (130) of the battery blocking unit (100), the foamed silicone part (140) may include a first foamed silicone part (141) positioned adjacent to the pack frame (2000) and a second foamed silicone part (145) positioned adjacent to the plurality of battery modules (200). However, the arrangement of the battery blocking unit (100) is not limited thereto, and the opposite case may also be included in the present embodiment.

[0076] Accordingly, in the battery pack (1000) according to the present embodiment, the foamed silicone part (140) can safely protect the battery blocking unit (100) from internal components such as the pack frame (2000) and a plurality of battery modules (200).

[0077] Here, the number and spacing of the first foamed silicone part (141) and the second foamed silicone part (145) may be the same as in Fig. 3, but the number and spacing may be adjusted as needed.

[0078] For example, in the case (130) of the battery disconnect unit (100), at least one foamed silicone part (140) may be arranged at a position adjacent to a plurality of battery modules (200). Although not illustrated in FIG. 3, a relatively large number of at least one foamed silicone part (140) may be arranged at a position adjacent to the plurality of battery modules (200). In other words, the number of at least one second foamed silicone part (145) may be greater than the number of at least one first foamed silicone part (141).

[0079] Accordingly, in the battery pack (1000) according to the present embodiment, the foamed silicone part (140) is placed in a position adjacent to a plurality of battery modules (200) that relatively generate a high-temperature environment inside the pack frame (2000), thereby more effectively securing the safety of the battery blocking unit (100).

[0080] In the battery pack (1000) according to the present embodiment, the foamed silicone material included in the foamed silicone part (140) exposed to the high-temperature environment inside the pack frame (2000, FIG. 3) expands toward the outside of the case (130). Here, the foamed silicone part (140) exposed to the high-temperature environment may refer to the foamed silicone part (140) located adjacent to a component that causes the high-temperature environment inside the pack frame (2000, FIG. 3) or is heated to a high temperature. In other words, the foamed silicone part (140) exposed to the high-temperature environment may refer to the foamed silicone part (140) located adjacent to a flame or fire point generated from a component that causes the high-temperature environment inside the pack frame (2000, FIG. 3).

[0081] For example, referring to FIG. 4, when a cell event (CE) such as overcurrent, overheating, or thermal runaway occurs in a specific battery module (200') adjacent to a battery disconnect unit (100), the second foamed silicone part (145) adjacent to the specific battery module (200') may expand toward the outside of the case (130), and a silicone expansion part (145P) may be formed along the outer surface of the case (130). Here, the silicone expansion part (145P) may be located between the outer surface of the upper case (135) and the specific battery module (200').

[0082] Unlike FIG. 4, when the pack frame (2000) adjacent to the battery blocking unit (100) is heated to a high temperature due to the high temperature environment inside the pack frame (2000), the first foamed silicone part (141) positioned adjacent to the pack frame (2000) expands toward the outside of the case (130), and a silicone expansion part (not shown) positioned between the outer surface of the case (130) and the pack frame (2000) can be formed.

[0083] Accordingly, in the battery pack (1000) according to the present embodiment, the silicone expansion member (145P) can safely protect the battery blocking unit (100) from the pack frame (2000) and / or internal components of the pack frame (2000) in a high temperature environment inside the pack frame (2000).

[0084] In addition, the silicone expansion member (145P) can prevent the case (130) from being exposed to a high-temperature environment such as an external flame, thereby sufficiently delaying the time for the case (130) to be destroyed, and sufficiently securing the operating time of safety components such as a fuse located inside the battery pack (1000).

[0085] The battery module and battery pack containing the same described above can be applied to various devices. These devices include, but are not limited to, means of transportation such as electric bicycles, electric vehicles, and hybrid vehicles. However, the present invention is not limited thereto and can be applied to various devices that can utilize the battery module and battery pack containing the same, and this also falls within the scope of the present invention.

[0086] Although the preferred embodiments of the present invention have been described in detail above, the scope of the present invention is not limited thereto, and various modifications and improvements made by those skilled in the art using the basic concept of the present invention defined in the following claims also fall within the scope of the present invention.
