AI Technical Summary
Existing IoT devices face challenges in efficiently performing periodic discovery processes to update lists of capabilities and available devices, which can be resource-intensive and costly in terms of battery consumption.
A method is introduced where a discovery process in IoT devices is triggered contextually based on the detection of new objects, rather than on a time-based schedule, using sensing capabilities to determine if new information about an object has been learned, thereby reducing unnecessary discovery processes.
This approach leads to energy savings for IoT devices by only triggering discovery processes when necessary, and allows for more efficient management of resources, particularly in devices with constrained battery life.

Abstract
Description
TRIGGERING AN IOT DISCOVERY PROCEDURETECHNICAL FIELD
[0001] The present disclosure relates generally to a method performed by a first device for triggering a discovery procedure about an object, and related methods and apparatuses.BACKGROUND
[0002] Hypermedia as the Engine of Application State (HATEOAS) is a constraint of a representational state transfer (REST) application architecture that distinguishes it from other network application architectures. In a REST application architecture, hypermedia clients or agents may perform a continuous process of discovery through available processes. Clients can interact with applications whose servers provide information dynamically through hypermedia. A REST client may need little to no prior knowledge about how to interact with an application or server beyond a generic understanding of hypermedia.
[0003] In the case of the web, a Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) in which hypertext markup language (HTML) websites are served to HTTP Clients. HTTP Clients can request HTML content using well-known approaches (e.g., GET, POST, etc.) and receive structured HTML content with standardized media types and link relations. Web servers host that content (e.g., resources) and provide unique addressing via uniform resource locators (URLs). At a later point in time, a client may discover that the HTML under the same URL has changed.
[0004] An Internet of Things (loT) domain also includes a concept of HATEOAS and REST interactions, but a Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP) is used instead of HTTP for REST interactions. CoAP endpoints can be small servers hosting resources that are shared over CoAP URLs (e.g., coap: / / sensor.iot.org:5683 / lamp?rt=light-lux) and can be equally exposed. In an loT domain, there may not be a single way to present information, such as with HTML and the web, and there may not be interoperability out-of-the-box. Figure l is a signaling diagram showing an example of a sample request and response over CoAP. As shown in Figure 1, a client sends a request to a server to get the temperature. The server responds to the client with a 2.05 content response providing the temperature of “22.5 C”. See e.g., “Integration of Heterogeneous Devices and Communication Models via the Cloud in the Constrained Internet of Thins”, F. Van den Abeele, J. Hoebeke, I. Moerman, P. Demeester, International Journal of Distributed Sensor Networks, DO: 10.1155 / 2015 / 683425 (2015).
[0005] From an application perspective, the ecosystem still may be divided into vertical silos of different domains and vendors. For example, World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) maystandardize a format referred to as Thing Description (TD). Other standards development organizations (SDOs) (e.g., Open Mobile Alliance (OMA), Open Connectivity Foundation (OCF), etc.) also may standardize formats that include specific domain knowledge. Meanwhile, Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) Constrained RESTful Environments (CoRE) Working Group (WG) tries to provide attributes that are related to link and form relation types (see e.g., CoRE Link Format and CoRE Interfaces). Discovery of resources over CoAP may be done in multiple ways, such as with a Resource Directory (RD), over Internet Protocol (IP) multicast, or with DNS- SD, for example. However, networks continue to be heterogeneous. For example, some scenarios may use multicast, while other scenarios may use a master / slave approach. Still other scenarios may have NATs cloud native messaging and firewalls, while other scenarios may simply have globally addressable IPv6 addresses. Moreover, some devices may be asleep while other devices may be permanently connected.SUMMARY
[0006] There currently exist certain challenges. Approaches may be lacking for devices to periodically perform a discovery process in order to update a list of capabilities and available devices. For example, devices implementing HATEOS need to periodically perform a discovery process in order to update a list of capabilities and available devices in the form of links and link relations. Such a process can be an expensive process in terms of battery consumption, where one request can generate dozens or hundreds of responses and use considerable airtime.
[0007] Certain aspects of the disclosure and their embodiments may provide solutions to these or other challenges. An object of some example embodiments presented herein is to trigger a discovery process on a device (e.g., a device with a constrained battery) when a new object is found, instead of a time-based process for example. A technical effect, therefore, may be energy savings for the device. For example, based on discovering information about the object, the information may trigger whether a further discovery process regarding the object may be needed. The further discovery procedure may be triggered, therefore, based on context about the object (as opposed to a time-based discovery procedure, for example), which may result in energy savings for the device. For example, if the device does not learn any new information about the object, then a further discovery process about the object may not be needed; or, if there is a change / new information about the object, a further discovery process about the object may proceed (e.g., to discover new network elements and services). Further, as a consequence of a reflection of a signal being used to detect the object and / or determine the information, a furthertechnical effect may be that the trigger and / or discovered information may not be tied to a particular network protocol as a sensing signal is used.

[0054] Concepts will now be described more fully hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which examples of embodiments of the present disclosure are shown. Concepts may, however, be embodied in many different forms and should not be construed as limited to the embodiments set forth herein. Rather, these embodiments are provided so that this disclosure will be thorough and complete, and will fully convey the scope of the present disclosure to those skilled in the art. It should also be noted that these embodiments are not mutually exclusive. Components from one embodiment may be tacitly assumed to be present / used in another embodiment.
[0055] The following description presents some embodiments of the disclosed subject matter. These embodiments are presented as teaching examples and are not to be construed as limiting the scope of the disclosed subject matter. For example, certain details of the described embodiments may be modified, omitted, or expanded upon without departing from the scope of the described subject matter.
[0056] Sensing (e.g., radar) and communication typically use separate infrastructure. For example, cellular communications use wireless networks such as GSM, UMTS, Fourth Generation (4G) / Long Term Evolution (LTE), and Fifth Generation (5G) New Radio (NR). Similarly, dedicated radar stations typically may be used for weather forecasting, air traffic control, etc. Although there have been some combinations of sensing and communication (e.g., positioning in cellular networks; weather forecasting using wireless link transmissions, etc.), such combinations typically have been developed ad-hoc.
[0057] Advances in hardware and signal processing, however, may have brought joint communication and sensing (JCAS) close to reality. A combination of communication and sensing may capitalize on commonalities in the fields of sensing (e.g., radar) and communication (e.g., cellular communications), such as the presence of a transmitter and a receiver; the use of electromagnetic waves for transmitting signals; the presence of a channel that distorts and corrupts the transmitted signal, etc. For instance, communication signals may be reused for sensing purposes. For example, a signal may be broadcasted by a base station to convey a message to one or several mobile terminals. Such a signal, directly or after reflections, may be received and processed by a sensing component to sense or detect the presence of an object(s). Sensing may include (i) testing a hypothesis (e.g., whether there is an object in the surroundings or not; whether there has been a change in a surrounding environment with respect to the last time an object was sensed or not), or (ii) inferring a metric (e.g., the coordinates and / or the speed of an object, etc.).
[0058] Sensing operations of example embodiments herein take place on radio resources that are shared between communication and sensing. The term “sensing” herein refers to the transmission of a sensing signal and the reception of the corresponding reflections (e.g., due to the presence of an object, diffraction, diffusion, and other phenomena).
[0059] Sensing includes two cases: (i) Mono-static sensing, in which the transmitter of the sensing signal and the corresponding receiver are co-located and typically are part of the same device; and (ii) Bi-static sensing, in which the transmitter of the sensing signal and the corresponding receiver are different devices and are typically placed in different locations. As discussed further herein, sensing involves the detection of an object that is not the transmitter or the receiver.
[0060] Power, or energy, constrained devices may implement specific receiver functionality that allows for waking up the receiver with a specific signal (e.g., a wake up signal (WUS)). That is, a WUS can be transmitted to force a receiver to switch from a low power consumption (e.g., sleep) mode in which it cannot receive regular transmissions to a normal mode. Such receivers may be referred to as wake up receivers (WURs). A WUR may be expected to wake up every time that it receives a WUS.
[0061] As previously referenced, devices (e.g. loT devices) implementing HATEOAS, for example, periodically perform a process in order to update a list of capabilities and available devices in the form of links and link-relations. Such an approach can be an expensive process in terms of battery consumption. For example, one request may generate dozens or hundreds of responses and use considerable airtime.
[0062] Certain aspects of the disclosure and their embodiments may provide solutions to this or other challenges. The present disclosure relates to triggering a discovery process on a device (e.g., a device with a constrained battery) when a new object is found, instead of a time-based process for example.
[0063] Examples of the present disclosure include use of sensing capabilities (e.g. Sixth Generation (6G) sensing capabilities) to trigger a discovery process on a device (e.g. a constrained UE having limited battery capacity) when a new object(s) (e.g., device(s)) are detected.
[0064] Examples herein include the following operations by a device: performing a sensing procedure that includes transmission of a sensing signal; detecting the presence of one or more objects that may be devices; and initiating a discovery procedure. As discussed further herein, the different devices (e.g., bases stations, devices, UE, etc.) may perform the operations.
[0065] In some embodiments, a method performed by a first device for triggering a discovery procedure about an object is provided. The method includes receiving (operation 700 in Figure 7) a reflection of a signal; and using (operation 702 in Figure 7) the reflection to detect the object and determine at least one of (i) that the object was not previously detected, and (ii) additional information about the object. The method further includes, responsive to detection of the object, triggering (operation 704 in Figure 7) a discovery procedure about the object to determine whether the object is a candidate device that can communicate with at least one of the first device and a second device.
[0066] Using the reflection may include receiving the reflection, and based on the received signal, detecting the object and determining from the received signal at least one of (i) that the object was not previously detected, and (ii) additional information about the object.
[0067] The additional information can include at least one of (i) a characteristic of the object, and (ii) a characteristic of the object and an identification of a type of the object. The characteristic can include at least one of a location of the object, a speed of the object, and a property of the object determined from the reflection. Identification of the type of the object can include that the object is a first UE.
[0068] Figure 3A is a schematic drawing of a first example; and Figure 3B is a signaling diagram that corresponds to the first example shown in Figure 3A. As shown in Figures 3A and 3B, a sensing procedure 306 takes place at a network node 300 (e.g., a base station). That is, the network node 300 transmits a radio signal (Tx-s) and, based on the received reflection (Rx-s) of the signal, the network node 300 determines that a candidate device(s) 302 is present. Thus, in the first example the sensing procedure is carried out by network node 300 (e.g., a base station). That is, network node 300 transmits the sensing signal and waits for the corresponding reflection(s).
[0069] Different types of additional information about the candidate device(s) 302 may be determined from the sensing procedure. For example:• Network node 300 may determine that there is an object(s) 302 detected (e.g., a new object that was not previously detected), without knowing further characteristics about the detected object(s) 302.• Network node 300 may determine that there is an object(s) 302 detected (e.g., based on the location, speed, or some other characteristic of the object(s) 302 determined from the reflected signals), without knowing of a type of the object.• Network node 300 may determine that there is an object(s) 302 detected and its type(s) (e.g., based on the location, speed, or some other characteristic of the object(s) 302 determined from the reflected signals).
[0070] After detecting 308 the candidate object(s) 302 from the sensing procedure 306, the network node 300 notifies 310 one or more second device 304 (e.g., loT device(s), such as a UE or a computer) about the detected object(s) 302 that may be a device(s). The notification 310 can be sent to the second device(s) 304 by the network node 300 as shown in Figures 3 A and 3B. In other examples, a different network node (not shown in Figures 3A and 3B) notifies the second device(s) 304 after a signaling exchange between the network nodes.
[0071] Upon receiving the notification 310, the second device(s) 304 triggers 312 a discovery procedure. The discovery procedure may in turn depend on the type of determination made by the sensing procedure 306 by the network node 300 and / or the notification 310 sent to the second device(s) 304. For example:• Network node 300 may determine that there is an object(s) 302 detected (e.g., a new object that was not previously detected), without knowing further characteristics about the detected object(s) 302. Detection of the object(s) 302 can trigger a general discovery procedure.• Network node 300 may determine that there is an object(s) 302 detected without knowing of a type of the object(s) 302 (e.g., without knowing that a detected object 302 has a shape similar to certain household appliance). Detection of the object(s) 302 can trigger a discovery procedure to determine the type(s) of the detected object(s) 302.• Network node 300 may determine that there is an object(s) 302 detected and its type(s) (e.g., a vehicle). Detection of the object(s) 302 and its type can trigger a discovery procedure specific for the detected type(s) of detected object(s) 302.
[0072] Alternatively, in the first example, the sensing procedure is not mono-static, but rather is bi-static. That is, a first device 300a (e.g., network node 300, which can be a base station) transmits a sensing signal (Tx-s) and a second network node (e.g., a second base station) receives the reflection of the signal (Rx-s). The notification 310 can be sent to the second device 304 by the second network node. Alternatively, a different network node (e.g., the first network node 300) can send the notification 310 to the second device 304 device after a signaling exchange between the two network nodes.
[0073] In this example, the notification 310 sent to the second device 304 (an loT computer 304 in this example) then triggers a discovery process. The discovery procedure can happen at multiple layers of the loT computer’s 304 network stack or at the application level, as shown in the schematic drawings of an example of a generic device open systems interconnection (OSI) stack in Figure 2.
[0074] The discovery procedure can use an IPv6 / IPv4 multicast message, a CoAP multicast message, a DNS-SD discovery message, a query to a well-known resource, a DHCP option, a query to a specific directory service hosting resource links like a Resource Directory (RD) or in some other form from a local network 306. Without limitation, the following examples of discovery procedures for services and endpoints can be used:• Over IPv6 or IPv4, with an application-specific discovery message to a bespoke IP address (e.g., for IPv6 in the form of “FF0x::l”).• Over CoAP Multicast, a CoAP message to an “All CoAP Nodes” CoAP multicast address as specified on RFC7252 (e.g., “224.0.1.187” on IPv4 and “FF0X::FD” on IPv6).- When an endpoint with resource type rt=core.rd is found (e.g., an RD), then a specific discovery procedure can be triggered to find further resources as specified by RFC9176.- At the application layer, an endpoint may expose some resource used specifically for service and resource discovery. For example, over CoAP, the . / well -known / core resource; and over HTTP, index.html• Over DHCP, the endpoint broadcasts a DHCPDIS COVER message on the network subnet using the destination address “255.255.255.255”, for example, or the specific subnet broadcast address.• Services and applications may have their own discovery procedure using a database system where endpoints register and a lookup can be performed.• Over DNS-SD using standard DNS packets and record types as specified on RFC6763.
[0075] In an example implementation of the first example, a room can contain the second device 304 (e.g., UE / computer 304). Second device 304 can perform a discovery procedure when a new object 302 (e.g., a smartphone 302) enters the room (e.g., to offer its services). The first device 300 (e.g., network node 300 (which a base station in this example)) periodically performs sensing procedure 306 using Tx-S and Rx-s. Upon sensing a change in the room that may correspond to the new object 302 that is an loT device (e.g., smartphone 302), the first device 300 notifies 310 the second device 304 about the change, triggering the discovery procedure. The second device 304 may be subscribed to a notification service, for example, in order to receive notification 310.
[0076] Whether the change in the room corresponds to a detected object 304 that is, for example, an loT device or not can depend on the situation. For example, if the room corresponds to a meeting room, then people may enter the room with or without an loT device (e.g., smartphone 302). On the other hand, in an industrial setting for example, every new detected object 302 entering a production line can correspond to an loT device (e.g., an automatic guided vehicle or AGV).
[0077] Further, the determination of the sensing procedure may be further used to discriminate whether a detected object 302 is a candidate loT device or not. For example, if the detected object 302 has a large sensing signature (that is, Rx-s), the sensing procedure may assume that that the detected object 302 is a larger metallic object (e.g., an AGV in a factory room). In contrast, a small sensing signature (Rx-s) may correspond to a person in the room.
[0078] Figure 4A is a schematic drawing of a second example; and Figure 4B is a signaling diagram that corresponds to the second example shown in Figure 4A. As shown in Figures 4A and4B, a sensing procedure 400 using Tx-s and Rx-s takes place at the first device 300 (e.g. an loT device such as a UE or a computer 300). That is, the first device 300 transmits a radio signal (Tx- s) and, based on the received reflection(s) of the signal (Rx-s), the first device 300 detects that an object 302 (e.g., smartphone 302) is a candidate device.
[0079] Thus, in the second example, a mono-static sensing procedure is carried by the first device 300, which is an loT device for example. That is, first device 300 transmits the sensing signal (Tx-s) and first device 300 waits for the corresponding reflection(s) (Rx-s) of the transmitted signal. A network node (e.g., a base station) is not involved in theses operations. For example, in the second example, there is no notification from a base station to an loT device regarding the detection of an object 302 that is a candidate device.
[0080] Different types of additional information about the candidate device(s) 302 may be determined from the sensing procedure 400. For example:
[0081] First device 300 may determine that there is an object(s) 302 detected (e.g., a new object that was not previously detected), without knowing further characteristics about the detected object(s) 302.
[0082] First device 300 may determine that there is an object(s) 302 detected (e.g., based on the location, speed, or some other characteristic of the object(s) 302 determined from the reflected signals), without knowing of a type of the object.
[0083] First device 300 may determine that there is an object(s) 302 detected and its type(s) (e.g., based on the location, speed, or some other characteristic of the object(s) 302 determined from the reflected signals).
[0084] After detecting 402 the candidate object(s) 302 from the sensing procedure 400, the first device 300 triggers 404 a discovery procedure. The discovery procedure may in turn depend on the type of determination made by the sensing procedure 400 by the first device 300. For example:
[0085] First device 300 may determine that there is an object(s) 302 detected (e.g., a new object that was not previously detected), without knowing further characteristics about the detected object(s) 302. Detection of the object(s) 302 can trigger a general discovery procedure.
[0086] First device 300 may determine that there is an object(s) 302 detected without knowing of a type of the object(s) 302 (e.g., without knowing that a detected object 302 has a shape similar to certain household appliance). Detection of the object(s) 302 can trigger a discovery procedure to determine the type(s) of the detected object(s) 302.
[0087] First device 300 may determine that there is an object(s) 302 detected and its type(s) (e.g., a vehicle). Detection of the object(s) 302 and its type can trigger a discovery procedure specific for the detected type(s) of detected object(s) 302.
[0088] The discovery procedure can use an IPv6 / IPv4 multicast message, a CoAP multicast message, a DNS-SD discovery message, a query to a well-known resource, a DHCP option, a query to a specific directory service hosting resource links like a Resource Directory (RD) or in some other form from a local network 306. Without limitation, the following examples of discovery procedures for services and endpoints can be used:• Over IPv6 or IPv4, with an application-specific discovery message to a bespoke IP address (e.g., for IPv6 in the form of “FFOx:: 1”).• Over CoAP Multicast, a CoAP message to an “All CoAP Nodes” CoAP multicast address as specified on RFC7252 (e.g., “224.0.1.187” on IPv4 and “FF0X::FD” on IPv6).• When an endpoint with resource type rt=core.rd is found (e.g., an RD), then a specific discovery procedure can be triggered to find further resources as specified by RFC9176.• At the application layer, an endpoint may expose some resource used specifically for service and resource discovery. For example, over CoAP, the , / well-known / core resource; and over HTTP, index.html.• Over DHCP, the endpoint broadcasts a DHCPDIS COVER message on the network subnet using the destination address “255.255.255.255”, for example, or the specific subnet broadcast address.• Services and applications may have their own discovery procedure using a database system where endpoints register and a lookup can be performed.• Over DNS-SD using standard DNS packets and record types as specified on RFC6763.
[0089] In an example implementation of the second example, first device 300 is an loT device and moves around within a building. First device 300 can perform a discovery procedure when a new object 302 (e.g., a smartphone 302) is detected proximate the first device 300. That is, first device 300 does not perform discovery continuously. Rather, a discovery procedure can be triggered when a new object 302 (e.g., an loT device 302) is detected. JCAS may be used, such that first device 300 uses communication signals that it transmits for other purposes (e.g., to communicate to other devices / nodes) for sensing the presence of a new object(s) 302. When a new object(s) 302 is detected, the detection triggers the discovery procedure.
[0090] Further, the determination of the sensing procedure may be further used to discriminate whether a detected object 302 is a candidate loT device or not. For example, if the detected object 302 has a large sensing signature (that is, Rx-s), the sensing procedure may assume that that thedetected object 302 is a larger metallic object (e.g., an AGV in a factory room). In contrast, a small sensing signature (Rx-s) may correspond to a person in the room.
[0091] Figure 5A is a schematic drawing of a third example; and Figure 5B is a signaling diagram that corresponds to the third example shown in Figure 5A. As shown in Figures 5A and 5B, a sensing procedure 500 is shared between the first device 304 (e.g., network node) and a second device 300 (e.g., an loT device, such as a UE or a computer). That is, the first device 304 transmits a radio signal (Tx-s). The second device 300 determines, based on the received reflection(s) (Rx-S) of the signal, whether an object(s) 302, which can be a candidate device(s), is detected. In other words, a bi-static sensing procedure is used in the third example. Thus, in the third example, a network node 304 is involved in the sensing procedure 500, but the network node 500 does not send a notification to the second device 300 regarding detection of the candidate object(s) 302.
[0092] Different types of additional information about the candidate device(s) 302 may be determined from the sensing procedure 500. For example:
[0093] First device 304 may determine that there is an object(s) 302 detected (e.g., a new object that was not previously detected), without knowing further characteristics about the detected object(s) 302.
[0094] First device 304 may determine that there is an object(s) 302 detected (e.g., based on the location, speed, or some other characteristic of the object(s) 302 determined from the reflected signals), without knowing of a type of the object.
[0095] First device 304 may determine that there is an object(s) 302 detected and its type(s) (e.g., based on the location, speed, or some other characteristic of the object(s) 302 determined from the reflected signals).
[0096] After detecting 502 the candidate object(s) 302 from the sensing procedure 500, the first device 304 triggers 502 a discovery procedure. The discovery procedure may in turn depend on the type of determination made by the sensing procedure 500 by the first device 304. For example:
[0097] First device 304 may determine that there is an object(s) 302 detected (e.g., a new object that was not previously detected), without knowing further characteristics about the detected object(s) 302. Detection of the object(s) 302 can trigger a general discovery procedure.
[0098] First device 304 may determine that there is an object(s) 302 detected without knowing of a type of the object(s) 302 (e.g., without knowing that a detected object 302 has a shape similar to certain household appliance). Detection of the object(s) 302 can trigger a discovery procedure to determine the type(s) of the detected object(s) 302.
[0099] First device 304 may determine that there is an object(s) 302 detected and its type(s) (e.g., a vehicle). Detection of the object(s) 302 and its type can trigger a discovery procedure specific for the detected type(s) of detected object(s) 302.
[0100] The discovery procedure can use an IPv6 / IPv4 multicast message, a CoAP multicast message, a DNS-SD discovery message, a query to a well-known resource, a DHCP option, a query to a specific directory service hosting resource links like a Resource Directory (RD) or in some other form from a local network 306. Without limitation, the following examples of discovery procedures for services and endpoints can be used:• Over IPv6 or IPv4, with an application-specific discovery message to a bespoke IP address (e.g., for IPv6 in the form of “FF0x::l”).• Over CoAP Multicast, a CoAP message to an “All CoAP Nodes” CoAP multicast address as specified on RFC7252 (e.g., “224.0.1.187” on IPv4 and “FF0X::FD” on IPv6).• When an endpoint with resource type rt=core.rd is found (e.g., an RD), then a specific discovery procedure can be triggered to find further resources as specified by RFC9176.• At the application layer, an endpoint may expose some resource used specifically for service and resource discovery. For example, over CoAP, the , / well-known / core resource; and over HTTP, index.html.• Over DHCP, the endpoint broadcasts a DHCPDIS COVER message on the network subnet using the destination address “255.255.255.255”, for example, or the specific subnet broadcast address.• Services and applications may have their own discovery procedure using a database system where endpoints register and a lookup can be performed.
[0101] Over DNS-SD using standard DNS packets and record types as specified on RFC6763.
[0102] The third example is different from sending WUS / WUR signals to the second device 300. WUS / WUR are transmitted directly to a device (e.g., an loT device) with the purpose of waking up the device and making the device available for communication. In contrast, the third example includes:• The transmission of a signal (Tx-s) by the network node 304. The signal can be dedicated for the purpose of sensing or can be used for sensing and some other purpose (e.g., a communications reference signal).• The second device 300 receives the signal (Rx-s) after Tx-s has propagated through the channel. The second device 300 uses the received signal, Rx-s, to determine whether a candidate device 302 is detected or not. In some cases, the second device 300 will notdetect the presence of candidate devices 302 and, thus, the second device 300 will not proceed with a discovery procedure.
[0103] Figure 6 is a flow chart of operations in the third example from the second device 300 point of view. The operations start 600 with second device 300 (referred to as a UE in Figure 6) available 602 to discover an object (302) (referred to as a new device 302 in Figure 6). In operation 604, the second device 300 waits for input from network node 304. Responsive to receiving input from network node 304, second device 300 determines, in operation 606, whether the input triggers a discovery procedure based on the detection of an object or does not trigger a discovery procedure because an object was not detected. If no, an object 302 was not detected, operations return to operation 602. If yes, in operation 608, an object 302 was detected, the discovery procedure is triggered; and the operations end 610.
[0104] In an example implementation of the third example, second device 300 detects a new object(s) 302, but does not perform a discovery procedure continuously. Rather, the discovery procedure is triggered when a new object is detected. JCAS may be used, such that second device 300 uses communication signals that it receives (e.g., periodic broadcast signals from the network node 304 (e.g., a base station) used for synchronization, etc.) for sensing the presence of a new object(s) 302. When a new object(s) 302 is detected, the detection triggers the discovery procedure.
[0105] Figure 8 is a flow chart illustrating further operations of a first device according to some embodiments. When the first device comprises a network node (e.g., network 300, 3110, 5300), the method further includes transmitting (800) the signal. Based on the detection of the object (e.g., object 302, 3112B, 4200), the method further includes initiating (802), towards a second device (e.g., device 304, 3112B, 4200), a notification including at least one of that the object is detected and the additional information about the object.
[0106] In the method, the device can include a network node (e.g., network node 300, 3110, 5300), the object (e.g., object 302, 3112B, 4200) which can be a first loT device, and the second device (e.g., object 304, 3112A, 4200) which can be a second loT device.
[0107] Figure 9 is a flow chart illustrating further operations of a first device according to some embodiments. When the first device comprises a first UE, the method can further include transmitting (900) the signal; and performing (902) the discovery procedure based on use of at least one of the detection of the object (e.g., object 302, 3112B, 4200) and the additional information to determine whether the object is a candidate device that can communicate with the first device and / or a capability of the candidate device.
[0108] Figure 10 is a flow chart illustrating further operations of a first device according to some embodiments. When the first device comprises a network node (e.g., network node 300,3110, 5300) and the second device (e.g., device 304, 3112A, 4200) comprises a UE, the method further includes transmitting (1000) the signal. In such embodiments, the triggering (operation 704 of Figure 7) of the discovery procedure includes triggering the discovery procedure to determine whether the object (e.g., object 302, 3112B, 4200) is a candidate device that can communicate with the second device (e.g., device 300, 3112A, 4200) and / or a capability of the candidate device. The method further includes initiating (1002), towards the second device (e.g., device 300, 3112A, 4200), a notification including at least one of that the object is a candidate device that can communicate with the second device and / or the capability of the candidate device.
[0109] The signal can include at least one of a dedicated sensing signal and a signal for sensing and communications.
[0110] Operations of the first device (implemented using the structure of Figures 4 or 5) have been discussed with reference to the flow charts of Figures 7-10 according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. For example, modules may be stored in memory 4202, 5304 (also referred to herein as at least one memory) of Figures 4 or 5, and these modules may provide instructions so that when the instructions of a module are executed by respective first device processing circuitry 4202, 5302 (also referred to herein as at least one processor), first device 4200, 5300 performs respective operations of the flow charts of Figures 7-10.[oni] In some embodiments, a method performed by a second device (e.g., device 300, 3112A, 4200) for triggering a discovery procedure about an object is provided. The method includes receiving (operation 1100 in Figure 11) a reflection of a signal transmitted by a first device (e.g., device 304, 3110, 5300); and using (operation 1102 in Figure 11) the reflection to detect the object and determine at least one of (i) that the object (e.g., object 302, 3112B, 4200) was not previously detected, and (ii) additional information about the object. The method further includes, responsive to detection of the object is detected, triggering (operation 1104 in Figure 11) a discovery procedure about the object to determine whether the object is a candidate device that can communicate with the second device and / or a capability of the candidate device.
[0112] Using the reflection may include receiving the reflection, and based on the received signal, detecting the object and determining from the received signal at least one of (i) that the object was not previously detected, and (ii) additional information about the object.
[0113] In some embodiments, the method of the second device further includes performing (operation 1200 in Figure 12) the discovery procedure based on use of at least one of detection of the object (e.g., object 302, 3112B, 4200) and the additional information to determine whether the object is a candidate device that can communicate with the second device and / or a capability of the candidate device. The additional information can include at least one of (i) a characteristic ofthe object (e.g., object 302, 3112B, 4200), and (ii) a characteristic of the object and an identification of a type of the object. The characteristic can include at least one of a location of the object (e.g., 302, 3112B, 4200), a speed of the object, and a property of the object determined from the reflection. The identification of the type of the object (e.g., 302, 3112B, 4200) can include that the object is a UE.
[0114] In some embodiments, the second device (e.g., device 300, 3112A, 4200) includes a first device, the first device (e.g., 304, 3110, 5300) includes a network node, and the object (e.g., object 302, 3112B, 4200) includes a second loT device.
[0115] In some embodiments, the signal includes at least one of a dedicated sensing signal and a signal for sensing and communications.
[0116] Operations of the second device (implemented using the structure of Figure 4) have been discussed with reference to the flow charts of Figures 11-12 according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. For example, modules may be stored in memory 4202 (also referred to herein as at least one memory) of Figure 4, and these modules may provide instructions so that when the instructions of a module are executed by respective second device processing circuitry 4202 (also referred to herein as at least one processor), second device 4200 performs respective operations of the flow charts of Figures 11-12.
[0117] In some embodiments of second devices and related methods, operations from the flow chart of Figure 12 may be optional. For example, the operations of block 1200 may be optional.
[0118] Technical advantages provided by certain embodiments of the present disclosure may include that a discovery process is triggered that depends on context instead of a time-based discovery process. As a consequence, there may be energy savings for the device that performs, or is involved with, the discovery procedure. Furthermore, the discovery procedure is not tied to a specific network protocol as a consequence of using a sensing signal.
[0119] Figure 13 shows an example of a communication system 3100 in accordance with some embodiments.
[0120] In the example, the communication system 3100 includes a telecommunication network 3102 that includes an access network 3104, such as a radio access network (RAN), and a core network 3106, which includes one or more core network nodes 3108. The access network 3104 includes one or more access network nodes, such as network nodes 3110a and 3110b (one or more of which may be generally referred to as network nodes 3110), or any other similar 3GPP access node or non-3GPP access point. The network nodes 3110 facilitate direct or indirect connection of UE, such as by connecting UEs 3112a, 3112b, 3112c, and 3112d (one or more ofwhich may be generally referred to as UEs 3112) to the core network 3106 over one or more wireless connections.
[0121] Example wireless communications over a wireless connection include transmitting and / or receiving wireless signals using electromagnetic waves, radio waves, infrared waves, and / or other types of signals suitable for conveying information without the use of wires, cables, or other material conductors. Moreover, in different embodiments, the communication system 3100 may include any number of wired or wireless networks, network nodes, UEs, and / or any other components or systems that may facilitate or participate in the communication of data and / or signals whether via wired or wireless connections. The communication system 3100 may include and / or interface with any type of communication, telecommunication, data, cellular, radio network, and / or other similar type of system.
[0122] The UEs 3112 may be any of a wide variety of communication devices, including wireless devices arranged, configured, and / or operable to communicate wirelessly with the network nodes 3110 and other communication devices. Similarly, the network nodes 3110 are arranged, capable, configured, and / or operable to communicate directly or indirectly with the UEs 3112 and / or with other network nodes or equipment in the telecommunication network 3102 to enable and / or provide network access, such as wireless network access, and / or to perform other functions, such as administration in the telecommunication network 3102.
[0123] In the depicted example, the core network 3106 connects the network nodes 3110 to one or more hosts, such as host 3116. These connections may be direct or indirect via one or more intermediary networks or devices. In other examples, network nodes may be directly coupled to hosts. The core network 3106 includes one more core network nodes (e.g., core network node 3108) that are structured with hardware and software components. Features of these components may be substantially similar to those described with respect to the UEs, network nodes, and / or hosts, such that the descriptions thereof are generally applicable to the corresponding components of the core network node 608. Example core network nodes include functions of one or more of a Mobile Switching Center (MSC), Mobility Management Entity (MME), Home Subscriber Server (HSS), Access and Mobility Management Function (AMF), Session Management Function (SMF), Authentication Server Function (AUSF), Subscription Identifier De-concealing function (SIDF), Unified Data Management (UDM), Security Edge Protection Proxy (SEPP), Network Exposure Function (NEF), and / or a User Plane Function (UPF).
[0124] The host 3116 may be under the ownership or control of a service provider other than an operator or provider of the access network 3104 and / or the telecommunication network 3102, and may be operated by the service provider or on behalf of the service provider. The host 3116may host a variety of applications to provide one or more service. Examples of such applications include live and pre-recorded audio / video content, data collection services such as retrieving and compiling data on various ambient conditions detected by a plurality of UEs, analytics functionality, social media, functions for controlling or otherwise interacting with remote devices, functions for an alarm and surveillance center, or any other such function performed by a server.
[0125] As a whole, the communication system 3100 of Figure 13 enables connectivity between the UEs, network nodes, and hosts. In that sense, the communication system may be configured to operate according to predefined rules or procedures, such as specific standards that include, but are not limited to: Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM); Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS); Long Term Evolution (LTE), and / or other suitable 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G standards, or any applicable future generation standard (e.g., 6G); wireless local area network (WLAN) standards, such as the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 5302.11 standards (WiFi); and / or any other appropriate wireless communication standard, such as the Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMax), Bluetooth, Z-Wave, Near Field Communication (NFC) ZigBee, LiFi, and / or any low-power wide-area network (LPWAN) standards such as LoRa and Sigfox.
[0126] In some examples, the telecommunication network 3102 is a cellular network that implements 3GPP standardized features. Accordingly, the telecommunications network 3102 may support network slicing to provide different logical networks to different devices that are connected to the telecommunication network 3102. For example, the telecommunications network 602 may provide Ultra Reliable Low Latency Communication (URLLC) services to some UEs, while providing Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) services to other UEs, and / or Massive Machine Type Communication (mMTC) / Massive loT services to yet further UEs.
[0127] In some examples, the UEs 3112 are configured to transmit and / or receive information without direct human interaction. For instance, a UE may be designed to transmit information to the access network 3104 on a predetermined schedule, when triggered by an internal or external event, or in response to requests from the access network 3104. Additionally, a UE may be configured for operating in single- or multi -RAT or multi -standard mode. For example, a UE may operate with any one or combination of Wi-Fi, NR (New Radio) and LTE, i.e. being configured for multi-radio dual connectivity (MR-DC), such as E-UTRAN (Evolved-UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network) New Radio - Dual Connectivity (EN-DC).
[0128] In the example, the hub 3114 communicates with the access network 3104 to facilitate indirect communication between one or more UEs (e.g., UE 612c and / or 612d) and network nodes (e.g., network node 610b). In some examples, the hub 3114 may be a controller, router, contentsource and analytics, or any of the other communication devices described herein regarding UEs. For example, the hub 3114 may be a broadband router enabling access to the core network 3106 for the UEs. As another example, the hub 3114 may be a controller that sends commands or instructions to one or more actuators in the UEs. Commands or instructions may be received from the UEs, network nodes 3110, or by executable code, script, process, or other instructions in the hub 3114. As another example, the hub 3114 may be a data collector that acts as temporary storage for UE data and, in some embodiments, may perform analysis or other processing of the data. As another example, the hub 3114 may be a content source. For example, for a UE that is a VR headset, display, loudspeaker or other media delivery device, the hub 3114 may retrieve VR assets, video, audio, or other media or data related to sensory information via a network node, which the hub 3114 then provides to the UE either directly, after performing local processing, and / or after adding additional local content. In still another example, the hub 3114 acts as a proxy server or orchestrator for the UEs, in particular if one or more of the UEs are low energy loT devices.
[0129] The hub 3114 may have a constant / persistent or intermittent connection to the network node 3110b. The hub 3114 may also allow for a different communication scheme and / or schedule between the hub 3114 and UEs (e.g., UE 3112c and / or 3112d), and between the hub 3114 and the core network 3106. In other examples, the hub 3114 is connected to the core network 3106 and / or one or more UEs via a wired connection. Moreover, the hub 3114 may be configured to connect to an M2M service provider over the access network 3104 and / or to another UE over a direct connection. In some scenarios, UEs may establish a wireless connection with the network nodes 3110 while still connected via the hub 3114 via a wired or wireless connection. In some embodiments, the hub 3114 may be a dedicated hub - that is, a hub whose primary function is to route communications to / from the UEs from / to the network node 3110b. In other embodiments, the hub 3114 may be a non-dedicated hub - that is, a device which is capable of operating to route communications between the UEs and network node 3110b, but which is additionally capable of operating as a communication start and / or end point for certain data channels. The network nodes 3110a, 3110b and / or the UEs 3112a, 3112b, 3112c, 3112d may be configured to perform the methods or flowcharts or signaling diagrams as described in relation to one or more of Figures 3B, 4B, 5B, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12.
[0130] Figure 14 shows a UE 4200 in accordance with some embodiments. As used herein, a UE refers to a device capable, configured, arranged and / or operable to communicate wirelessly with network nodes and / or other devices (e.g., UEs). Examples of a UE include, but are not limited to, a smart phone, mobile phone, cell phone, voice over IP (VoIP) phone, wireless local loop phone, desktop computer, personal digital assistant (PDA), wireless cameras, gaming console ordevice, music storage device, playback appliance, wearable terminal device, wireless endpoint, mobile station, tablet, laptop, laptop-embedded equipment (LEE), laptop-mounted equipment (LME), smart device, wireless customer-premise equipment (CPE), vehicle, vehicle-mounted or vehicle embedded / integrated wireless device, etc. Other examples include any UE identified by 3GPP, including a narrow band internet of things (NB-IoT) LTE, a machine type communication (MTC) UE, and / or an enhanced MTC (eMTC) UE. The UE 4200 may be configured to perform the methods or flowcharts or signaling diagrams as described in relation to one or more of Figures 3B, 4B, 5B, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12.
[0131] A LIE may support device-to-device (D2D) communication, for example by implementing a communication link described herein, a 3 GPP standard for sidelink communication, Dedicated Short-Range Communication (DSRC), vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V), vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I), or vehicle-to-everything (V2X). In other examples, a UE may not necessarily have a user in the sense of a human user who owns and / or operates the relevant device. Instead, a UE may represent a device that is intended for sale to, or operation by, a human user but which may not, or which may not initially, be associated with a specific human user (e.g., a smart sprinkler controller). Alternatively, a UE may represent a device that is not intended for sale to, or operation by, an end user but which may be associated with or operated for the benefit of a user (e.g., a smart power meter).
[0132] The UE 4200 includes processing circuitry 4202 (also referred to herein as at least one processor) that is operatively coupled via a bus 4204 to an input / output interface 4212, a power source 4208, a memory 4210, a communication interface 4212, and / or any other component, or any combination thereof. Certain UEs may utilize all or a subset of the components shown in Figure 7. The level of integration between the components may vary from one UE to another UE. This may allow a user to perform diagnostic, maintenance, repair, and other administrative functions for the network node 5300.
[0162] Figure 16 is a block diagram illustrating a virtualization environment 6500 in which functions implemented by some embodiments may be virtualized. In the present context, virtualizing means creating virtual versions of apparatuses or devices which may include virtualizing hardware platforms, storage devices and networking resources. As used herein, virtualization can be applied to any device described herein, or components thereof, and relates to an implementation in which at least a portion of the functionality is implemented as one or more virtual components. Some or all of the functions described herein may be implemented as virtual components executed by one or more virtual machines (VMs) implemented in one or more virtual environments 6500 hosted by one or more of hardware nodes, such as a hardware computing device that operates as a network node, UE, core network node, or host. Further, in embodiments in which the virtual node does not require radio connectivity (e.g., a core network node or host), then the node may be entirely virtualized. The virtual environment 6500 may be configured to perform the methods or flowcharts or signaling diagrams as described in relation to one or more of figures 3B, 4B, 5B, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12.
[0163] Applications 6502 (which may alternatively be called software instances, virtual appliances, network functions, virtual nodes, virtual network functions, etc.) are run in the virtualization environment 6500 to implement some of the features, functions, and / or benefits of some of the embodiments disclosed herein.
[0164] Hardware 6504 includes processing circuitry, memory that stores software and / or instructions executable by hardware processing circuitry, and / or other hardware devices as described herein, such as a network interface, input / output interface, and so forth. Software may be executed by the processing circuitry to instantiate one or more virtualization layers 6506 (also referred to as hypervisors or virtual machine monitors (VMMs)), provide VMs 6508a and 6508b (one or more of which may be generally referred to as VMs 6508), and / or perform any of the functions, features and / or benefits described in relation with some embodiments described herein. The virtualization layer 6506 may present a virtual operating platform that appears like networking hardware to the VMs 6508.
[0165] The VMs 6508 comprise virtual processing, virtual memory, virtual networking or interface and virtual storage, and may be run by a corresponding virtualization layer 6506. Different embodiments of the instance of a virtual appliance 6502 may be implemented on one or more of VMs 6508, and the implementations may be made in different ways. Virtualization of the hardware is in some contexts referred to as network function virtualization (NFV). NFV may be used to consolidate many network equipment types onto industry standard high volume server hardware, physical switches, and physical storage, which can be located in data centers, and customer premise equipment.
[0166] In the context of NFV, a VM 6508 may be a software implementation of a physical machine that runs programs as if they were executing on a physical, non-virtualized machine. Each of the VMs 6508, and that part of hardware 6504 that executes that VM, be it hardware dedicated to that VM and / or hardware shared by that VM with others of the VMs, forms separate virtual network elements. Still in the context of NFV, a virtual network function is responsible for handling specific network functions that run in one or more VMs 6508 on top of the hardware 6504 and corresponds to the application 6502.
[0167] Hardware 6504 may be implemented in a standalone network node with generic or specific components. Hardware 6504 may implement some functions via virtualization. Alternatively, hardware 6504 may be part of a larger cluster of hardware (e.g. such as in a data center or CPE) where many hardware nodes work together and are managed via management and orchestration 6510, which, among others, oversees lifecycle management of applications 6502. In some embodiments, hardware 6504 is coupled to one or more radio units that each include one or more transmitters and one or more receivers that may be coupled to one or more antennas. Radio units may communicate directly with other hardware nodes via one or more appropriate network interfaces and may be used in combination with the virtual components to provide a virtual node with radio capabilities, such as a radio access node or a base station. In some embodiments, some signaling can be provided with the use of a control system 6512 which may alternatively be used for communication between hardware nodes and radio units.
[0168] Although the network nodes and UEs described herein may include the illustrated combination of hardware components, other embodiments may comprise network nodes and UEs with different combinations of components. It is to be understood that these network nodes and UEs may comprise any suitable combination of hardware and / or software needed to perform the tasks, features, functions and methods disclosed herein. Determining, calculating, obtaining or similar operations described herein may be performed by processing circuitry, which may process information by, for example, converting the obtained information into other information, comparing the obtained information or converted information to information stored in the network node and / or UE(s), and / or performing one or more operations based on the obtained information or converted information, and as a result of said processing making a determination. Moreover, while components are depicted as single boxes located within a larger box, or nested within multiple boxes, in practice, network nodes and UEs may comprise multiple different physical components that make up a single illustrated component, and functionality may be partitioned between separate components. For example, a communication interface may be configured to include any of the components described herein, and / or the functionality of the components may be partitioned between the processing circuitry and the communication interface. In another example, non-computationally intensive functions of any of such components may be implemented in software or firmware and computationally intensive functions may be implemented in hardware.
[0169] In certain embodiments, some or all of the functionality described herein may be provided by processing circuitry executing instructions stored on in memory, which in certain embodiments may be a computer program product in the form of a non-transitory computer- readable storage medium. In alternative embodiments, some or all of the functionality may be provided by the processing circuitry without executing instructions stored on a separate or discrete device-readable storage medium, such as in a hard-wired manner. In any of those particular embodiments, whether executing instructions stored on a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium or not, the processing circuitry can be configured to perform the described functionality. The benefits provided by such functionality are not limited to the processing circuitry alone or to other components of the network nodes and UEs, but are enjoyed by the network nodes and UEs as a whole, and / or by end users and a wireless network generally.
