Description

GEMSTONE RING AND METHOD FOR MAKING THE SAMEFIELD OF THE INVENTION

[0001] The present invention relates to jewelry, particularly gemstone rings.BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0002] Traditionally, gemstones are only placed onto the head of rings as center stones or side stones using prongs made of precious metals. This is because gemstones of sufficient sizes rarely exist in nature and, even if they do, it will be so precious that no one would be using it for making a single ring. With the improvement in technology, gemstones can now be synthetically made to desired sizes and rings can be made from a single gemstone. However, since gemstones are often very hard, processing them into a single ring would be very challenging. This invention will provide methods for making such gemstone rings.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0003] This invention provides a method for making a gemstone ring. In one embodiment, said method comprises the steps of: a) Providing a gemstone of suitable size, wherein said gemstone comprises two flat sides and an exterior surface; b) Forming a crude ring comprising an outer surface with a set of facets and an inner surface, said crude ring is formed by: i) Laser marking on said gemstone a set of contour lines for said gemstone ring, wherein said set of contour lines comprises an outer contour line and an inner contour line; ii) Shaping said exterior surface according to said outer contour line using mechanical means; iii) Laser drilling said gemstone according to said inner contour line; and iv) Shaping said two flat sides using mechanical means to achieve an even thickness of within 0.05mm; v) Grinding and polishing to form a set of facets with symmetry of over 95%; c) Polishing said crude ring with an automatic polisher to form a set of facets with perfect symmetry; d) Chamfering said inner surface to achieve a suitable angle; e) Grinding said inner surface with active monitoring toachieve ±O.lmm from a standard ring size; and f) Polishing said inner surface to form said gemstone ring.

[0004] This invention also provides a gemstone ring made using the method of this invention.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE FIGURES

[0005] Figure 1 shows a schematic illustration of the processing method of this invention.

[0006] Figure 2 shows a gemstone ring of this invention with a metallic head.DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

[0007] This invention provides a method for making a gemstone ring. In one embodiment, said method comprises the steps of: a) Providing a gemstone of suitable size, wherein said gemstone comprises two flat sides and an exterior surface; b) Forming a crude ring comprising an outer surface with a set of facets and an inner surface, said crude ring is formed by: i) Laser marking on said gemstone a set of contour lines for said gemstone ring, wherein said set of contour lines comprises an outer contour line and an inner contour line; ii) Shaping said exterior surface according to said outer contour line using mechanical means; iii) Laser drilling said gemstone according to said inner contour line; and iv) Shaping said two flat sides using mechanical means to achieve an even thickness of within 0.05mm; v) Grinding and polishing to form a set of facets with symmetry of over 95%; c) Polishing said crude ring with an automatic polisher to form a set of facets with perfect symmetry; d) Chamfering said inner surface to achieve a suitable angle; e) Grinding said inner surface with active monitoring to achieve ±0.1mm from a standard ring size; and f) Polishing said inner surface to form said gemstone ring.

[0008] In one embodiment, said automatic polisher is an automatic polisher for polishing diamond.

[0009] In one embodiment, said gemstone is selected from the group consisting of corundum, diamond, and emerald.

[0010] In one embodiment, said corundum is ruby or sapphire.

[0011] In one embodiment, said method further comprises grinding a ring groove on said inner surface before said step (f).

[0012] In one embodiment, said method further comprises attaching one or more metallic heads to said gemstone ring at step (f).

[0013] In one embodiment, said one or more metallic heads comprises a set of prongs for holding a center stone.

[0014] In one embodiment, said one or more metallic heads comprises a set of prongs for holding one or more side stones.

[0015] In one embodiment, said one or more metallic heads are made of one or more materials selected from the group consisting of gold, silver and platinum.

[0016] This invention also provides a gemstone ring made using the method of this invention.

[0017] The invention will be better understood by reference to the following examples, but those skilled in the art will readily appreciate that the specific examples detailed are only illustrative, and are not meant to limit the invention as described herein, which is defined by the claims which follow thereafter. Throughout this application, various references or publications are cited. Disclosures of these references or publications in their entireties are hereby incorporated by reference into this application in order to more fully describe the state of the art to which this invention pertains. It is to be noted that the transitional term “comprising”, which is synonymous with “including”, “containing” or “characterized by”, is inclusive or open-ended and does not exclude additional, un-recited elements or method steps.

[0018] Figure 1 shows an embodiment of this invention. A gemstone of suitable size is first provided (Step 1). The gemstone can be a diamond, emerald or a corundum such as ruby or sapphire. The gemstone may be pre-processed to have the desired shape. In one embodiment, the desired shape has two more or less parallel flat sides. The remaining surface or surfaces may be regular or irregular and referred to as an exterior surface. The gemstone with such a desired geometry may be made out of a larger gemstone using mechanical or other means. A set of contour lines representing the final ring will be laser marked onto the gemstone. The exterior surface will be shaped using mechanical means based on the contour lines and the two parallel surfaces will be shaped to an even thickness of within 0.05mm (Step 2). Laser drilling will then be conducted to form an inner surface. A set of facets will be formed on the surface by grinding to a form a symmetry of 90% and then polished to a symmetry of 95%. An automatic polisher such as the one described in CN105798732B is then used for polishing the facets to perfect symmetry (Step 3). The inner side of the ring is then chamfered to achieve a suitable angle. The suitable angle may be pre-determined or decided by experience. The inner side is then grinded so that a desired standard ring size is achieved (Step 4). The final gemstone ring is formed after the inner side of the ring is polished (Step 5).

[0019] Figure 2 shows an embodiment of this invention where a metallic head is added so that a further gemstone can be set onto the ring. The metallic head can be made of any precious metals such as gold, silver or platinum. A side stone may also be added using a similar method.
