Abstract
Description
[0001] “Procedure for repairing hair damage and strengthening the inner hair structure”
[0002] The invention relates to a method for repairing hair damage and strengthening the inner hair structure using epsilon-polylysine.
[0003] It is well known that chemical treatments of human hair for fashion reasons often lead to damage to the hair structure. Examples of chemical treatments that can cause more or less severe damage include perms, repeated cold waves, bleaching and lightening processes, and coloring with oxidative dyes, especially when lightening is used simultaneously. Hair damage can also be caused by sun exposure and washing. All of these factors can induce damage at various levels and alter the hair structure, leading to weaker hair. Such damage manifests itself in a loss of the hair's natural shine, an unattractive, dull appearance, and, in the case of more severe damage, in split ends, hair breakage, or the appearance of small knots in the hair.
[0004] Attempts have already been made to improve the structure of hair damaged in this way through various treatments, although no satisfactory solution has yet been found. Conventional or commercially available hair care products can repair the surface and, to some extent, the hair fibers, thereby achieving excellent care effects. However, these care benefits are often minimal, temporary, and short-lasting, as they can be washed out again. Frequent care treatment is therefore necessary, especially for severely damaged hair fibers, which can sometimes result in an undesirable built-up effect due to overconditioning, which in turn leads to heavy and / or greasy hair.
[0005] It would be desirable to prevent such internal hair damage or to repair the hair steadily day after day from the moment the hair grows out of the scalp, so that hair breakage is delayed, alleviated or avoided.
[0006] Previous attempts to provide products or processes that contribute to strengthening hair have not always been entirely satisfactory, as their use or application can be limited due to formulation difficulties (such as stability, solubility, pH compatibility). Furthermore, the known technologies are mostly based on synthetically derived ingredients, which are increasingly less accepted by consumers due to sustainability concerns.
[0007] Providing a hair treatment method that repairs internal hair damage and strengthens the hair's internal structure is therefore a relevant goal in the field of hair cosmetics. Ideally, the hair treatment method should use more sustainable compositions and active ingredients.
[0008] This object is achieved according to the invention by a method for repairing hair damage and strengthening the inner hair structure, in which a cosmetic composition containing epsilon-polylysine is applied to the hair and optionally rinsed out after an exposure time of 5 seconds to 60 minutes.
[0009] Epsilon-polylysine is a biotechnologically derived multifunctional active ingredient that has so far been used primarily as a preservative in Asia. Furthermore, epsilon-polylysine is known for its excellent anti-dandruff efficacy—especially in combination with other anti-dandruff active ingredients (e.g., from DE 102011079536, DE 102011079540)—as well as for its hair care effects (e.g., from EP 2036536).
[0010] The ability of epsilon-polylysine to repair internal structural hair damage has not yet been described.
[0011] It has now been discovered that the addition of epsilon-polylysine to cosmetic hair treatment products imparts exceptionally good properties to hair. In particular, hair treated according to a process defined herein exhibits a stronger internal structure, which is reflected in a higher denaturation temperature, increased tensile strength, and reduced swelling in water. This is especially true for hair treatment processes applied to oxidatively damaged hair.
[0012] Epsilon-polylysine is produced biotechnologically, is toxicologically safe, and biodegradable. When used in the cosmetic compositions of the inventive method, it ensures permanent repair by penetrating deep into the hair fibers and creating new micro-bonds through chemical cross-linking. The hair's natural keratin is trapped within the fibers, permanently repairing the hair.
[0013] The process defined herein leads to a significant hair repair effect that can be achieved with an active ingredient of biotechnological origin.
[0014] Furthermore, the hair treatment method according to the invention using a shampoo containing epsilon-polylysine leads to a significant reduction in combing force of the hair fibers.
[0015] The present invention also provides the use of epsilon-polylysine in cosmetic compositions for repairing hair damage and strengthening the inner hair structure. The present invention also provides a cosmetic composition for repairing hair damage and strengthening the inner hair structure, comprising specific amounts of epsilon-polylysine and at least one other hair fiber repair agent.
[0016] The invention summarized above will now be presented in more detail.
[0017] Unless otherwise stated, all amounts expressed in % are % by weight and are expressed relative to the total weight of the cosmetic composition.
[0018] An “epsilon-polylysine” suitable for use in the process according to the invention is understood to mean an oligo- or homopolymer of the natural amino acid lysine, which is also referred to as epsilon-polylysine due to its linkage in the e-position.
[0019] Particularly preferably, "epsilon-polylysine" in the context of the present invention refers to epsilon-poly-L-lysine. This is a polyelectrolyte that is soluble in polar solvents (such as water). Physiologically acceptable salt and solution forms of epsilon-poly-L-lysine are also suitable for use in the process according to the invention.
[0020] Epsilon-poly-L-lysine is available by bacterial fermentation, for example from the strain Streptomyces albulus.
[0021] Due to its polycationic charge, epsilon-poly-L-lysine has a high affinity for hair, which has a negative net charge.
[0022] It has been found that epsilon-poly-L-lysine with a linear molecular structure and a specific degree of polymerization is particularly suitable for use in the process according to the invention.
[0023] Particularly suitable are compounds of the following formula where n stands for integers from 2-50.
[0024] More preferably, n represents integers from 10-40 and especially from 25-35.
[0025] It has been demonstrated that epsilon-poly-L-lysine with the previously defined linear molecular structure—compared to polylysine with a dendritic structure—can penetrate much better and deeper into the cuticle and outer hair cortex. This enhances the repairing and hair-strengthening effect. In a preferred embodiment, methods or uses according to the invention are characterized in that epsilon-polylysine has a linear molecular structure and that it contains 2 to 50, preferably 10 to 40, and in particular 25 to 35 lysine units.
[0026] In preferred methods according to the invention using cosmetic compositions containing epsilon-poly-L-lysine, epsilon-poly-L-lysine is preferably used within narrower quantity ranges. A suitable amount of epsilon-poly-L-lysine (based on the total weight of the respective cosmetic composition) is preferably 0.001 to 10 wt.%, more preferably 0.0025 to 7.5 wt.%, particularly preferably 0.005 to 5 wt.%, most preferably 0.0075 to 3 wt.%, and in particular 0.01 to 1 wt.%.
[0027] In a preferred embodiment, methods or uses according to the invention are characterized in that the cosmetic composition contains - based on its total weight - 0.001 to 10 wt.% epsilon-polylysine.
[0028] There are no fundamental restrictions regarding the type of cosmetic compositions in which epsilon-poly-L-lysine can be used for the process according to the invention. Suitable packaging forms include, for example, creams, lotions, solutions, waters, emulsions such as W / O, O / W, and PIT emulsions (emulsions based on the theory of phase inversion, also known as PIT), microemulsions and multiple emulsions, coarse, unstable, single- or multi-phase shake mixtures, gels, sprays, aerosols, foam aerosols, and also solid forms such as powders, granules, or bars.
[0029] Cosmetic compositions suitable for use in the method according to the invention preferably contain epsilon-poly-L-lysine in a cosmetic carrier.
[0030] An aqueous or aqueous-alcoholic base can be used as a cosmetic carrier for the cosmetic compositions.
[0031] Lower alkanols and polyols such as propylene glycol and glycerin are used as the alcoholic component. Ethanol and isopropanol are preferred alcohols. Water and alcohol can be present in the aqueous-alcoholic base in a weight ratio of 1:20 to 90:1. Water and aqueous-alcoholic mixtures containing up to 50% by weight, especially up to 25% by weight, of alcohol, based on the alcohol / water mixture, can be preferred bases.
[0032] The pH of cosmetic compositions can, in principle, range from 2 to 11. It is preferably between 2 and 7, with values from 3 to 5 being particularly preferred. Practically any acid or base suitable for cosmetic purposes can be used to adjust this pH. Typically, food acids are used as acids. Food acids are those acids that are ingested as part of normal food intake and have positive effects on the human organism. Examples of food acids include acetic acid, lactic acid, tartaric acid, citric acid, malic acid, ascorbic acid, and gluconic acid. Within the scope of the invention, the use of citric acid and / or lactic acid is particularly preferred.
[0033] Preferred bases are ammonia, alkali metal hydroxides, monoethanolamine, triethanolamine and N,N,N',N'-tetrakis-(2-hydroxypropyl)-ethylenediamine.
[0034] Cosmetic compositions in which epsilon-poly-L-lysine can be employed for use in the method according to the invention can be in solid or liquid embodiments, for example as a cosmetic cleansing composition for the scalp and / or hair, such as cleansing powders or granules, soap bars, cleansing wipes, porous bodies (solid cleansing foams), liquid hair shampoos, 2-in-1 hair care shampoos, anti-dandruff shampoos, hair coloring shampoos, hair cleansing rinses or combinations thereof, cosmetic care composition (conditioner) for the scalp and / or hair, such as hair rinses, hair treatments, hair packs, hair tonics, hair serums, ethanolic or aqueous tinctures, etc.or combinations thereof, which may be present as both leave-on and rinse-off compositions, cosmetic composition for the temporary or permanent shaping or fixing of hair, such as hairsprays, permanent wave fixing solutions, hair setting lotions, hair setting products, hair styling preparations, blow-dry lotions, mousses, hair gels, hair waxes or combinations thereof, temporary or permanent hair dyes.
[0035] Particularly preferred within the meaning of the present invention are methods in which cosmetic rinse-off or leave-on compositions comprising epsilon-poly-L-lysine are used for the care of hair and / or scalp.

[0037] Methods according to the invention in which epsilon-poly-L-lysine is used in cosmetic compositions that remain on the scalp and / or hair (leave-on preparations) have proven particularly effective and can therefore represent preferred embodiments of the teaching according to the invention. For the purposes of the present invention, leave-on preparations are understood to mean those preparations that are not rinsed off the scalp or out of the hair with water or an aqueous solution after a period of a few seconds to one hour during the treatment. Rather, the preparations remain on the scalp or hair until the next wash.
[0038] A preferred embodiment comprises methods according to the invention in which epsilon-poly-L-lysine is used in hair conditioners. These preparations can be rinsed out with water or an at least predominantly water-containing agent after a certain contact time; however, it may be preferable if they are left on the hair, as explained above.

[0193] Examples:
[0194] The following hair treatment products were prepared. The quantities given are in wt.% unless otherwise stated.
[0195] 1) Examples of implementation
[0196] Hair shampoo: with linear molecular structure and 25 to 35 lysine units Hair conditioner: with a linear molecular structure and 25 to 35 lysine units
[0197] 2) Evidence of effectiveness a) DSC measurements
[0198] Background:
[0199] Hair is a keratin-containing material with a complex morphological microstructure. For mechanical or thermal studies, the structure can be simplified as a biphasic filament / matrix composite, in which α-helical filaments are embedded in an amorphous matrix. These two dominant compounds largely determine the mechanical properties of human hair. Peak temperature values provide information about the damage or integrity of the matrix and α-helix. The looser (less cross-linked) the matrix or the smaller the crystals of the α-helical phase, the lower the peak temperature.
[0200] Materials:
[0201] Hair strands: Alkinco 6634 (USA), natural, dark European hair
[0202] DSC pans
[0203] Pretreatment:
[0204] Three strands of hair were used, each of which had been cleaned with SLES (approximately 3% active ingredient in deionized water, pH 6-7). Then, with the exception of the untreated reference strand, the strands were bleached with Blond Me Lift9+, mixing ratio 1:2 (bleaching powder:developer with 9% H2O2). 5 g of the mixture was applied per g of hair for 45 minutes. The pre-treatment was completed at least 48 hours before the application of the product.
[0205] Composition and method of application of the product:
[0206] An aqueous solution M1 containing 2% epsilon-polylysine was prepared. The pH of the solution was 6.5. One of the bleached hair strands was immersed in the solution M1 for 60 minutes at room temperature. The excess solution was then wiped off, the strand was rinsed with tap water for 1 minute, and finally shampooed twice with a SLES solution (10%; pH 4.5) for 1 minute each. After rinsing and drying the strand, DSC measurements were performed on all three hair strands.
[0207] Measurement:
[0208] All three hair strands (untreated, bleached, bleached, and treated with solution M1) were each cut into pieces approximately 1 mm long. 12 aliquots per reference were placed in DSC pans. After adding 50 ml of deionized water, each pan was sealed. The measurement was carried out in a temperature range of 100-200°C at a heating rate of 10 Kelvin per minute. The denaturation temperature (= peak temperature) was then determined.
[0209] Results:
[0210] The hair treatment procedure with the aqueous solution containing epsilon-polylysine resulted in a significant increase in the denaturation temperature of ultra-bleached hair strands. b) Investigation of the adsorption and penetration of two polylysine polymers in human hair fibers using fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM)
[0211] Two different polylysine polymers (poly-Lys type 1 and poly-Lys type 2) were investigated.
[0212] Poly-Lys type 1 is dendritic and contains 48 lysine units. 10 g of poly-Lys type 1 was dissolved in glycerol / water (molecular weight of poly-Lys type 1: 8600 g / mol).
[0213] Poly-Lys type 2 is linear and contains 30 lysine units. 10 g of poly-Lys type 2 was dissolved in water (molecular weight of poly-Lys type 2: 4000–4700 g / mol).
[0214] For the FLIM study, both polylysines were labeled with Alexa647 NHS ester (Alexa 647 NHS ester (Thermofischer) 2x1 mg; molecular weight approx. 1300 g / mol).
[0215] The FLIM images of hair treated with poly-Lsy type 2 Alexa show that the fluorescence is distributed quite homogeneously along the cuticle, which in such cases allows the distinction of different cuticle layers. There are also some Alexa signals coming from regions within the cortex, particularly from areas close to the skin. This is clearly visible in the FLIM images, but also in the lifetime histogram, where a contribution at 1.5 ns is evident (see Fig. 2).
[0216] This suggests that poly-Lsy type 2 Alexa can penetrate the cuticle and enter the cortex more efficiently than poly-Lys type 1 Alexa molecules (see Fig. 1).
