Abstract
Description
[0001] Water-based perfume composition
[0002] FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[0003] The present invention relates to an aqueous-based perfuming or deodorizing composition comprising: (a) from 5 to 40% by weight of at least one perfuming or deodorizing substance, (b) a solubilizing system comprising: (i) at least one polyethoxylated sorbitan C6-C22 fatty acid ester, (ii) at least one polyethoxylated C6-C22 fatty acid triglyceride, (iii) at least one glycerol and C6-C12 fatty acid ester, and (c) water. It also relates to the use of this composition for perfuming or deodorizing the atmosphere or a substrate such as the body and / or a textile, as well as a deodorizing or perfuming product in the form of a spray containing such a composition.
[0004] BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0005] Perfumes are complex mixtures of compounds that are poorly or not at all soluble in water and are therefore generally carried in compositions with a high alcohol content such as ethanol or isopropanol, possibly mixed with water. Ethanol is the most commonly used solvent as it evaporates quickly, provides a refreshing sensation on the skin and allows the formulation of transparent compositions. However, the perfume industry is seeking to replace ethanol with solvents free of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), given the regulatory constraints related to the use of VOCs. Ethanol is also irritating to the skin and may alter the olfactory profile of certain perfumes. Therefore, consideration has been given to formulating perfumes in water using surfactants, generally in the form of microemulsions.
[0006] In this context, patent application CN111388338 discloses a water-based perfume for pets, which is possibly ethanol-free and contains a polyol such as propylene glycol, as well as a solubilizing system consisting of polyethoxylated sorbitan monolaurate (20 EO) marketed under the designation Tween® 20, and a hydrogenated and polyethoxylated castor oil (40 EO).
[0007] The Applicant has, however, demonstrated that this combination of solubilizers has an unacceptable stickiness for application to human skin. Furthermore, it does not allow the production of a perfume composition that is stable over time and that retains its transparency. The same applies to its combination with a polyol.
[0008] In a similar vein, US Patent No. 11,040,003 describes an aqueous-based perfume formulation comprising polyethoxylated fatty acid triglycerides combined with a C3-C10 alkanediol.
[0009] The solutions provided to date for formulating ethanol-free perfumes come up against the fact that ethanol helps to fix and diffuse perfumes and that its substitution does not always allow for obtaining perfumes with good durability over time.
[0010] There therefore remains a need to have an aqueous-based perfume composition, possibly without ethanol, which is stable over time, possibly transparent, and without a sticky character. It would also be desirable to have a perfume composition with a good diffusion profile, i.e. good stability of the perfume intensity over time. Finally, it would be advantageous for this composition to contain only bio-sourced and biodegradable solubilizers in order to meet the ever-increasing demands of consumers for naturalness.
[0011] After extensive research, the Applicant demonstrated that these needs could be met by substituting glycerol and C6-C12 fatty acid esters for the diols of the prior art.
[0012] SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0026] The fragrance substance according to the invention may be provided by a perfume ingredient, a combination of perfume ingredients referred to as an "accord" or a more complex mixture of perfume ingredients referred to as a "perfume". A perfume ingredient contains, for example, a plant extract comprising volatile organic substances. The plant extract is generally the product resulting from the implementation of a process for extracting odorous molecules, such as enfleurage, hydrodistillation, steam distillation, expression or supercritical CO2 extraction, on all or part of a plant. These techniques make it possible in particular to obtain essential oils or absolutes, in particular.

Compounds of this type are available, for example, under the trade names Dub G Smart® (STEARINERIE DUBOIS), DUB810G® (STEARINERIE DUBOIS), Steol® GCC (STEPAN), Stepan Mild® (STEPAN), CremerCOOR® GC810 (CREMER OLEO) or Capmul® AB (ABITEC).Component (iii) may optionally consist of a mixture of mono-, di- and / or triesters as described above. In this case, it is preferred that it contains at least 30% by weight of monoglycerides, preferably from 40 to 80% by weight of monoglycerides.
[0037] Component (iii) may represent from 0.5 to 7% by weight, preferably from 2 to 7% by weight of the composition.
[0038] It is preferred that the solubilizing system included in the composition according to the invention consists solely of the constituents (i) to (iii) described above.
[0039] Additives
[0040] In a particular embodiment, the composition according to the invention comprises from 95 to 100% by weight, preferably from 97 to 100% by weight of the constituents (a) to (c). More particularly, in addition to the solubilizing system and the perfuming or deodorizing substance, the composition may comprise at most 5% by weight, preferably at most 3% by weight of one or more additives chosen for example from antioxidants, preservatives and colorants, provided that these constituents do not harm the properties of the composition according to the invention. In a preferred embodiment, the composition according to the invention contains less than 1% by weight of ethanol, or is even free of ethanol.
[0041] It is further preferred that the composition according to the invention is free of polyols, in particular glycerol, propylene glycol, 1,3-butanediol, dipropylene glycol and / or methylpropylene glycol.
[0042] In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the composition is transparent, i.e. it has a transmittance (or transmission factor) of at least 80% at a wavelength of 600 nm, for example measured using a Lambda 40 UV-visible spectrometer, at a concentration of 0.5% by weight in water. It may have, for example, a transmittance of at least 90% or at least 95% at a wavelength of 600 nm, measured for example using a Lambda 40 UV-visible spectrometer.
[0043] Alternatively, the composition according to the invention may be translucent, i.e. allow light to pass through without, however, being able to clearly distinguish the objects in front of which it is placed. In this case, it generally has a transmittance of less than 80%, but typically at least 50%, at a wavelength of 600 nm, as measured as described above.
[0044] According to yet another possibility, the composition according to the invention may have a veiled appearance. In this case, it generally has a transmittance of less than 50%, but typically at least 10%, at a wavelength of 600 nm, as measured as described above.
[0045] It has been observed that the composition according to the invention is stable over time, that is to say after 30 days of storage at 25°C.
[0046] Stability measurement can be performed in accordance with ISO TR13097:2013 using a turbidimeter using multiple light scattering in static mode, such as the Turbiscan® LabExpert from FORMULACTION. This type of device consists of illuminating the sample to be tested (wavelength: 880 nm), placed in a transparent tube, and measuring the transmitted intensity (at an angle of 180° to the incident light) and the backscattered intensity (at an angle of 45° to the incident light) using two synchronized detectors placed opposite and next to the light source. The device scans and collects data every 40 pm along the height of the sample, from bottom to top. The measurement is repeated at a frequency that allows the stability of the sample to be assessed over a given period.
[0047] It is thus possible to determine the variation in size (coalescence) and the movement (sedimentation) of particles suspended in the sample.
[0048] The device is coupled with Turbisoft® software which provides a TSI stability index (for “Turbiscan Stability Index” in English).
[0049] The composition is considered stable when its TSI is less than 5.
[0050] Uses
[0051] In a preferred embodiment, the composition according to the invention constitutes a perfume, insofar as the solubilizing system according to the invention can be used as a replacement for all or part of the ethanol conventionally contained in fine perfumery products. In this case, the composition according to the invention generally contains from 10 to 30% by weight, preferably from 11 to 27% by weight and preferably from 15 to 20% by weight of solubilizing system and from 5 to 15% by weight, preferably from 8 to 12% by weight, of perfume. The composition according to the invention can thus constitute an eau de Cologne, an eau de toilette or an eau de parfum. In this application, the composition is typically intended to perfume the body.
[0052] Alternatively, the composition according to the invention may constitute a deodorizing composition and generally contains from 3 to 20% by weight, preferably from 3 to 15% by weight of solubilizing system and from 5 to 15% by weight, preferably from 5 to 7% by weight of deodorizing substance. In this application, the composition is typically intended to deodorize a surface such as hair or a textile.
[0053] In these applications, given that the composition according to the invention constitutes an aqueous solution, it is preferable to use packaging adapted to this type of solution. Indeed, aqueous perfume solutions have a greater viscosity than alcoholic solutions. They therefore require a specific pump of the mist type in order to have a good diffusion of the product on the skin, which also makes it possible to reduce the evaporation time on the skin. EXAMPLES
[0054] The examples below are given for illustrative purposes only and are not intended to limit the scope of the invention which is defined by the appended claims.
[0055] Example 1: Stability test - variation in solubilizer level
[0056] Various compositions were prepared consisting of 73% by weight of deionized water, 10% by weight of perfume and 17% by weight of a solubilizing system, namely:
[0057] Composition A: 17% of a "Mix Eco" combination consisting of a 50 / 50 mixture (by weight) of POLYSORBATE 20 and bio-sourced polyethoxylated hydrogenated castor oil (40 EO).
[0058] Composition B: 14% Eco Mix and 3% by weight of glyceryl caprylate / caprate.
[0059] Composition C: 12% Eco Mix and 5% by weight of glyceryl caprylate / caprate.
[0060] Composition D: 10% Eco Mix and 7% by weight of glyceryl caprylate / caprate.
[0061] The change in the transparency of these compositions over 30 days was assessed using a 20 ml sample of each of these compositions. To do this, their transmission factor was measured at 25°C using a Turbiscan® LabExpert device from FORMULACTION. The results of this test are presented in Table 1 below.
[0062] Table 1
[0063] As can be seen from this table, comparative composition A very quickly falls below the transparency threshold corresponding to 80% transmission, which is not the case for Compositions B, C and D according to the invention, even after 30 days. Glyceryl caprylate / caprate therefore helps to maintain the transparency of the perfume compositions tested.
[0064] The stability of these compositions was also assessed using FORMULACTION's Turbiscan® LabExpert, one hour after preparation and regularly for 30 days of storage at 25°C. The TSI values provided by the device are shown in Table 2 below.
[0065] Table 2
[0066] This measurement confirms that compositions B to D, which have a TSI lower than 5 after 30 days, are stable over time, unlike composition A which has a much higher TSI.
[0067] Example 2: Stability test - variation in the nature of solubilizers
[0068] A test similar to that of Example 1 was carried out by combining glyceryl caprylate / caprate with other solubilizers, comprising: either a mixture of polyglycerol-3 cocoate, caprylyl / capryl glucoside and polyglycerol laurate (Gilasol® 100 from GILAS and Resassol Apostrophie® from SHARON), or heptyl glucoside (Sepiclear® G7 from SEPPIC): this stabilizing effect of glyceryl caprylate / caprate was not observed, which reflects a synergistic effect of the solubilizing system according to the invention.
[0069] Another test was carried out using a different perfume in composition B of Example 1 (composition B') and substituting polyols, namely propanediol (PDO), pentylene glycol (PENT) and butylene glycol (BUT) for glyceryl caprylate / caprate (DUB) to obtain compositions B1, B2 and B3 respectively. The results of this test are summarized in Table 3:
[0070] Table 3
[0071] As this table shows, after 15 days at room temperature, the samples containing the polyols lose their transparency. On the contrary, the composition according to the invention remains perfectly transparent even after 14 days.
[0072] The stability of these compositions was also assessed using FORMULACTION's Turbiscan® LabExpert, one hour after preparation and regularly for 30 days of storage at 25°C. The TSI values provided by the device are shown in Table 4 below.
[0073] Table 4
[0074] This measurement confirms that composition B', which has a TSI of less than 5 after 30 days, is stable over time, unlike compositions B1 to B3 which have a much higher TSI.
[0075] Finally, additional tests were carried out by varying the constituents of the solubilizing system according to the invention. Specifically, a composition C1 was formulated by replacing polysorbate 20 with polysorbate 80 in a composition C' identical to composition C of Example 1, except for the perfume. A composition C2 was obtained by replacing the polyethoxylated hydrogenated castor oil (40 EO) of composition C' with a non-hydrogenated polyethoxylated castor oil (40 EO).
[0076] The transmission T of these samples was measured as described above, in order to assess their transparency.
[0077] The results of these tests are collected in Table 5 below.
[0078] Table 5
[0079] We thus observe that the substitution of these two solubilizers does not impact the transparency of the perfume composition, which is preserved over time.
[0080] The stability of these compositions was also assessed using FORMULACTION's Turbiscan® LabExpert, one hour after preparation and regularly for 30 days of storage at 25°C. The TSI values provided by the device are shown in Table 6 below.
[0081] Table 6
[0082] This measurement confirms that compositions C', Cl and C2, which have a TSI lower than 5 after 30 days, are all stable over time. Example 3: Stability test - variation in perfume level
[0083] The transparency of four perfume compositions according to the invention was visually assessed after 3 months of storage at 5°C, 25°C and 40°C, respectively. To do this, the following compositions were observed against a white background in order to detect any opalescence or cloudiness.
[0084] Table 7 The results of these visual assessments are collected in Table 8 below.
[0085] Table 8
[0086] Example 4: Evaluation of the sticky effect
[0087] The stickiness of a perfume composition consisting of 68% deionized water was evaluated;
[0088] 12% perfume; 15% of a "Mix Eco" combination consisting of a 50 / 50 blend (by weight) of bio-sourced POLYSORBATE 20 and polyethoxylated hydrogenated castor oil (40 EO); and 5% glyceryl caprylate / caprate. A comparative composition containing 20% Mix Eco and without glyceryl caprylate / caprate was also tested.
[0089] To this end, a trained panel of 10 experts applied 40 μl of product to the back of one hand, which was then spread using 20 gentle circular movements performed using 3 fingers of the other hand. After one minute, the stickiness of the residual film on the skin was assessed on a scale of 1 to 10. The average of the 10 scores obtained was then calculated.
[0090] The scores given to the composition according to the invention and to the comparative composition were respectively 2.8 and 4.4, which demonstrates the capacity of glyceryl caprylate / caprate to reduce the sticky effect of perfume compositions based on organic solubilizers.
[0091] A triangular test was then carried out by the same panel, under the same conditions: 70% of the panelists judged the two samples to be significantly different.
[0092] Evaluation of perfume durability
[0093] A sensory evaluation was carried out in accordance with ASTM E3261-21 to assess the persistence over time of different perfume compositions.
[0094] To do this, a panel of experts composed of at least 5 people was convened twice to compare the intensity of the same perfume formulated at 15% either in ethanol or in a composition further comprising 65% by weight of deionized water and 20% by weight of a solubilizing system, namely: 8% by weight of POLYSORBATE 20, 8% by weight of polyethoxylated hydrogenated castor oil (40 EO) and 4% by weight of glyceryl caprylate / caprate. This panel was formed regularly using an n-butanol scale as a reference.
[0095] Both products were applied to the forearms of a volunteer, previously washed with fragrance-free soap. 40 μL of each product was placed on the forearms, just above the wrists (one product per forearm). An initial assessment was carried out after 1 h, 3 h, 4 h 30, 6 h and 8 h. The panelists rated the intensity of the fragrance after each time interval on a scale of 0 to 10.
[0096] A second assessment was conducted one week later by applying each product to the opposite arm. The average intensities of each panelist and each assessment were calculated, as well as the 95% confidence interval. Then, a 5% Student t-test was performed for each time point to determine the significant difference in the impact of the base on the persistence of the fragrance over time. The results of this test are presented in Table 9 below.
[0097] Table 9
[0098] *CI: Confidence Index As these results show, the two products have the same initial diffusion profile ("blooming" effect), but the intensity of the perfume formulated according to the invention is more durable and the difference with the perfume formulated in ethanol increases over the hours.
