Abstract
Description
DESCRIPTION TITLE: WATERPROOF ACCESSORY FOR PROTECTING A PART OF AN UPPER OR LOWER LIMB OF AN INDIVIDUAL TO BE PROTECTED TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[0001] The invention relates to a waterproof accessory for protecting a part to be protected of an upper or lower limb of an individual, in particular, but not exclusively, of a site for implantation of a catheter on an upper or lower limb of an individual, in particular the forearm or forearm of a patient. STATE OF THE PRIOR ART
[0002] Some medium-term medical treatments require regular intravenous treatments. To avoid repeated needle sticks, it is known to insert a catheter, most often in the patient's forearm or forearm. The catheter can be connected to a bag containing the prescribed treatment or an injection device. In this way, it is possible to administer different intravenous treatments adapted to the evolution of the patient's health, or to take blood samples. When the catheter is not in use, it is closed with a cap to prevent bacteria from entering the patient's body. However, the skin around the catheter remains exposed to bacteria and risks becoming infected if it is not protected, especially when the skin is in contact with water, for example when the patient is taking a shower.
[0003] Thus, in document US6276364 is presented a protective sleeve for an implantation site of a catheter chronically implanted in the forearm or forearm of a patient. The sleeve is made of a waterproof biocompatible material and is normally worn by a person in the shower to prevent moisture from invading the implantation site. In one embodiment, the sleeve has two elastomer beads that form a tight seal between a person's arm and the beads, and the sleeve flares in its midsection so as not to snag the catheter. In another embodiment, the sleeve has a fastener at one end and at least one fastener at the other end formed integrally within the waterproof accessory or, in another embodiment embodiment, a plurality of axially spaced indentations on a tapered portion of the sleeve.
[0004] The waterproof biocompatible material of the sleeve is an elastomer, for example latex. Elastomers are elastic materials suitable for ensuring the waterproofing of the catheter implantation site, but their cytotoxicity does not meet the standard requirements for medical devices. Furthermore, the type of material proposed remains quite rigid and thick, which makes the sleeve difficult to put on and uncomfortable to wear. In addition, the surface condition of the material is not suitable for the patient's skin and can cause discomfort or even skin irritation, particularly on the skin surrounding the catheter, which has already been damaged by the catheter's insertion. After contact with water, the elastomer can become slippery, which makes it difficult for the patient to grip the waterproof accessory, while the patient must install and remove the waterproof accessory with one hand.Furthermore, materials such as rubber can cause allergic reactions that affect patient comfort. Finally, for the sleeve to fit the patient's forearm morphology, it is necessary that the diameter of the sleeve's distal opening, close to the hand, be smaller than the diameter of the proximal opening, closer to the elbow, which complicates manufacturing. STATEMENT OF THE INVENTION
[0005] The invention aims to remedy the drawbacks of the state of the art and to propose a waterproof accessory for protecting a part to be protected of an upper or lower limb of an individual, which is simple to manufacture, while offering increased comfort to the user.
[0006] To this end, according to a first aspect of the invention, a waterproof accessory for protecting a part to be protected of an upper or lower limb of an individual is proposed, the waterproof accessory comprising a main body that is at least partially tubular, preferably cylindrical, surrounding a reference axis of the waterproof accessory and having at least one first open axial end, the main body being constituted by a sheet of flexible material, the waterproof accessory further comprising at least one first annular end piece secured to the first open axial end of the main body, and extending from the first open axial end of the main body towards the reference axis, characterized in that the sheet of flexible material of the main body is a sheet of laminated material comprising a layer of impermeable material, covered on a first face by a first layer of contact material.
[0007] Using a laminate with two different layers allows each layer to be optimized for its specific functions. Thus, the layer of waterproof material can be chosen for its impermeability, independently of any touch quality or cytotoxicity, as long as it is covered by at least one layer of contact material, which is intended to come into contact with the user, and also, as will be seen later, to constitute, if necessary, a welding and bonding interface facilitating the assembly of the waterproof accessory.
[0008] The sheet of flexible material of the main body is closed along a weld line extending along the reference axis and materialized by two opposite edges of the sheet of flexible material, arranged so that the first layer of contact material at one of the two opposite edges is in contact with the first layer of contact material at the other of the two opposite edges, the weld line preferably being rectilinear, preferably welded. It is therefore the layer of contact material which constitutes the welding interface.Welding, which can be heat-applied for example by ultrasound or hot air, provides a robust finish, which does not require the addition of additional material(s) compared to other methods used, for example sewing or gluing, additional material(s) which could come into contact with the user's skin and cause discomfort or introduce a cytotoxicity problem. Ultrasonic welding also guarantees the preservation of the shape of the main body of the waterproof accessory.
[0009] According to one embodiment, the weld line of the main body is covered with a multi-layer sealing adhesive tape, the sealing adhesive tape preferably comprising at least one waterproof inner layer and two opposite outer layers containing polyester, the sealing adhesive tape preferably covering a face of the weld line facing radially towards the reference axis, the multi-layer sealing adhesive tape preferably having a grammage less than or equal to 500 g / m 2 , preferably less than or equal to 400 g / m 2 , for example equal to 380 g / m 2 . The sealing tape ensures a seal at the weld. If necessary, it prevents the weld line from coming into contact with the user's skin.
[0010] According to one embodiment, the first annular part of the waterproof accessory is made of a material identical to the material constituting the sheet of flexible material of the main body. According to one embodiment, to maintain a waterproof accessory that is completely waterproof and not very irritating to the user's skin, the first annular part is welded to the main body along a first annular weld line, preferably ultrasonic welding, preferably without adding material. Preferably, the first annular weld line is covered with a sealing adhesive tape, preferably multi-layer, preferably comprising at least one waterproof inner layer and two opposite outer layers having a rougher surface condition than the waterproof inner layer.
[0011] According to a particularly simple embodiment to implement, the first annular part is flat. By flat is meant a part which is flat before its assembly to the body.
[0012] According to various embodiments: the sheet of laminated material has a thickness preferably less than 1 mm, preferably less than 0.5 mm, for example between 0.3 and 0.4 mm, and / or the sheet of laminated material further comprises a second layer of contact material, the layer of impermeable material being located between the first layer of contact material and the second layer of contact material, at least one of the first and second layers of contact material being preferably treated to be water-repellent and / or the laminated material has a grammage of less than 180 g / m 2 , preferably less than 160 g / m 2 , for example a weight of 140 g / m 2; and / or the waterproof material layer of the laminated material is made of polyurethane; and / or the contact material layer(s) (18B, 18C) of the laminated material has a roughness greater than the waterproof material layer (IA); and / or the contact material layer(s) (18B, 18C) of the laminated material contains polyester, polyamide and / or Lyocell, or is made of polyester, polyamide or Lyocell.
[0013] The laminated material is therefore a thin and lightweight material, which does not cause any unpleasant sensation to the user and does not hinder the user's movements. The polyurethane gives the waterproof accessory, in addition to its impermeability, a long-lasting mechanical resistance. Thus, it is possible to put on and take off the waterproof accessory repeatedly, for example for washing or sports activities, without damaging it.
[0014] The materials chosen for the layers of the laminated material mean that - unlike the well-known materials used such as latex, neoprene or silicone - the waterproof accessory is machine washable at 60°C, which guarantees use in satisfactory hygienic conditions.
[0015] The roughness of the contact layer(s) facilitates in particular the welding or bonding of the first annular part to the main body, or of the previously mentioned sealing adhesive tape, or of the elastic lip to the laminated material.
[0016] The materials chosen for the contact material layer(s), including materials containing polyester, polyamide and / or Lyocell, or are made of polyester, polyamide or Lyocell, are unlikely to irritate the skin and cause allergies.
[0017] When both sides of the waterproof material layer are each covered by a layer of contact material, the roughness of the contact material allows the user to easily grip the waterproof accessory and increases the feeling of comfort.
[0018] The cytotoxicity of the selected laminate materials complies with EN ISO 10993-5. The materials allow steam sterilization at 134°C and machine washing at 60°C or even 95°C.
[0019] The water-repellent treatment makes the outer surface of the waterproof accessory easier to handle. Furthermore, when the user removes the waterproof accessory, the water-repellent treatment prevents the part of the user's body to be protected from getting wet if the outer surface of the waterproof accessory comes into contact with the user's skin.
[0020] According to one embodiment, a first elastic lip is secured to an inner annular end of the first annular part remote from the main body, and extends from the first annular part radially towards the reference axis. Preferably, the first elastic lip is welded or glued at least to a first layer of contact material of the first annular end part, and preferably to a second layer of contact material of the first annular end part, the first annular end part preferably comprising a layer of impermeable material located between the first layer of contact material and the second layer of contact material of the first annular end part. The attachment of the lip is in fact easier on the layer of contact material than on the layer of impermeable material.
[0021] According to one embodiment, the first elastic lip is formed by two superimposed layers of technical polymer or medical silicone, each layer preferably having a weight less than or equal to 400 g / m 2 , each layer preferably having a thickness less than or equal to 400 pm. Technical polymers can for example be polyamides or polyacetals. These materials, unlike well-known materials such as latex, neoprene or silicone, allow machine washing at 60°C. Medical silicone allows for even greater heat resistance, which allows steam sterilization at temperatures above 100°C. The mechanical properties of the technical polymer or medical silicone of the elastic lips allow them to be handled repeatedly without degrading. Preferably, each elastic lip consists of two superimposed layers of technical polymer or medical silicone.
[0022] According to one embodiment, the waterproof accessory is a waterproof protective sleeve, in particular a sleeve for protecting a catheter implantation site on an upper or lower limb of an individual, in particular a protective sleeve intended for a forearm or a forearm of an individual, the main body being tubular, preferably cylindrical, and having at least one second open axial end, the waterproof accessory further comprising at least one second annular end piece, preferably planar, secured to the second open axial end of the main body, and extending from the second open axial end of the main body towards the reference axis, the waterproof accessory preferably having at least one second elastic lip, secured to an inner annular end of the second annular end piece distant from the main body, and extending from the second annular end piece radially towards the reference axis. The sleeve is preferably symmetrical with respect to a median transverse plane of the main body, perpendicular to the reference axis. The symmetry of the waterproof accessory allows the user to position it on his arm without being constrained by a direction of insertion. The waterproof accessory is therefore easier to put on and take off., BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE FIGURES

[0030] In Figure 1 is illustrated a waterproof accessory 10 for protecting a catheter implantation site on a part to be protected of a limb, here an arm 11, of a patient. The waterproof accessory 10 is composed of a main body 12, two annular end pieces 14 positioned at the two open ends of the main body 12, and two elastic lips 16 at the free ends of the two flat annular parts 14, the section of which decreases as it moves away from the main body 12. Preferably, the waterproof accessory 10 is symmetrical with respect to a median transverse plane X (Figure 2) of the main body 12.
[0031] The main body 12 of the waterproof accessory 10, before its insertion around the user's forearm or forearm, has a tubular shape, preferably cylindrical, or where appropriate puffed, defining a reference axis 100. It has a first end and a second end 15 which are open and of equal diameters, and a central section of diameter equal to, or where appropriate greater than, the diameters of the first and second ends 15. The diameter of the two open ends 15 is chosen according to the size of the user, so as not to squeeze the part to be protected.
[0032] The main body 12 of the waterproof accessory 10 is made of a three-layer laminated material sheet 18, which has been illustrated deliberately schematically and without respect for dimensions in Figures 2 to 5. More specifically, the laminated material sheet 18 comprises a layer of waterproof material 18A and, on either side of this layer of waterproof material 18A, a first layer of contact material 18B and a second layer of contact material 18C. In Figures 2 and 3, the waterproof accessory is placed on the reverse side, so that the second layer of contact material 18C faces outwards and the first layer of contact material 18B faces inwards.
[0033] Contrary to what the schematic illustrations of Figures 2 to 5 might suggest, the sheet of laminated material 18 is very thin and light. Its thickness is preferably less than 1 mm, preferably less than 0.5 mm, for example between 0.3 and 0.4 mm. It has a grammage of less than 180 g / m 2 , for example a weight between 160 g / m 2 and 180 g / m 2 , or even a weight of less than 160 g / m 2 , for example of the order of 140 g / m 2. The material of the waterproof material layer 18A is preferably polyurethane. The material of the first and second contact material layers 18B, 18C is preferably a polyester, or contains polyester. The first and second contact material layers 18B, 18C preferably have a surface condition having a roughness greater than the material of the waterproof material layer 18A. One of the two contact material layers 18B, 18C, intended to be facing outwards during use, is preferably treated to be water-repellent.
[0034] The laminated material sheet 18 of the main body is a rectangular-shaped piece, two opposite edges 181, 182 of which are brought together to form a cylindrical sleeve around the reference axis. More precisely, the rectangular piece 18 is folded on the reverse side, and the two opposite edges 181, 182 are brought into plane contact with each other, so that the first layer of contact material 18B at one of the edges 181 is in contact with the first layer of contact material 18B at the other edge 182. In this position, the edges 181, 182 are welded to each other ultrasonically to form a weld line 22. The edge of the laminated material sheet along this weld line 22 is then cut to form a clean interface 23 which is covered by a sealing adhesive tape 24 as illustrated in FIG. 3. Preferably, the sealing tape 24 is stuck on the weld line 22. In practice, the adhesive tape may have a grammage less than or equal to 500 g / m 2 , preferably less than or equal to 400 g / m 2 , for example equal to 380 g / m 2 . Where appropriate, the adhesive tape itself may be multi-layered, comprising an inner waterproof layer and two opposing outer layers containing polyester.
[0035] Attached to each of the two ends 15 of the main body 12 of the waterproof accessory 10 is an annular end piece 14. Each annular end piece 14 has an outer perimeter 141 in contact with the associated end 15 of the main body 12, and an inner perimeter 142 closer to the reference axis 100 of the waterproof accessory 10. The annular end pieces 14 are made of planar annular sheets of the same three-layer laminated material as the main body, with a layer 14A of waterproof material positioned between a first layer of contact material 14B and a second layer of contact material 14C.The first layer of contact material 14B of the annular end piece 14 is brought into contact with the first layer of contact material 18B of the laminated material sheet 18 of the main body 12 at the outer perimeter 141 of the annular end piece 14 and the associated end 15 of the main body 12, to form a circular weld line 26, as schematically illustrated in FIG. 2. The annular end piece 14 can then be ultrasonically welded to the main body 12 at this circular weld line 26, then the projecting edge of the laminated material pieces 14, 18 is cut off and a sealing adhesive tape 28 identical to the adhesive tape 24 is applied thereto.
[0036] At the inner perimeter 142 of the annular end pieces 14 is glued or welded an annular elastic lip 16 which projects, from the inner perimeter 142, towards the reference axis. The diameter of the elastic lips 16 is chosen so as to adapt to the user. Each elastic lip 16 preferably comprises a first annular strip 16B of technical polymer having an adhesive face coming into contact with the first layer of contact material 14B of the annular end piece 14 at the inner perimeter 142, and a second annular strip 16C having an adhesive face coming into contact with the second layer of contact material 14C of the annular end piece 14 at the inner perimeter 142, the adhesive faces of the first and second annular strips 16B, 16C being applied to each other in their portion projecting from the inner perimeter 142. Remarkably, adhesion to the annular end pieces is promoted by the surface roughness of the layers of contact material 14C and 14B and by the choice of a material containing polyethylene. Heat may be applied to obtain adhesion of the adhesive faces of the annular strips 16B and 16C to each other, and of each to the associated layer of contact material 14B or 14C. Each strip of technical polymer 16B, 16C preferably has a grammage less than or equal to 400 g / m 2, and a thickness less than or equal to 400|im.
[0037] As described previously, the operations of mounting the waterproof accessory, and in particular ultrasonic welding at the weld lines 22 and 26 and gluing the lips 16, are carried out on the reverse side, as illustrated in Figures 2 and 3. The waterproof accessory is then turned over onto the right side, so that the second layer of contact material 18C is turned towards the reference axis, as illustrated in Figures 4 and 5. The sealing tapes 24 and 28 are then turned towards the reference axis.
[0038] The installation of the waterproof protective accessory 10 around the forearm or the forearm of the user can be carried out by the user himself using his free hand. The user holds the waterproof accessory 10 using his free hand, and inserts one end of the arm to be protected into one of the openings of the elastic lips 16. Then, the user puts on the waterproof accessory 10 with his free hand in a direction parallel to his arm. When the lip 16 of the waterproof accessory 10 reaches the catheter, the user stretches the elastic lip 16 so as to make it pass over the catheter and then releases the lip 16 so that it comes into contact with his forearm or his forearm, at a distance from the catheter. Once the waterproof accessory 10 is installed, the end ring pieces 14 of the waterproof accessory 10 clamp the user's forearm or forearm, so as to waterproof the implantation site of the catheter contained in the main body 12. At no time is the user in unpleasant contact with the waterproof layers 18A, 14A of the main body 12 and the annular end pieces 14, because these waterproof layers 18A, 14A are entirely covered, on both faces by the contact material layers 18B, 18C, 14B, 14C and on the edge by the sealing adhesive tapes 24, 28 and by the lips 16.
[0039] The shape of the waterproof accessory, preferably symmetrical with respect to the transverse plane X, means that there is no need to choose a direction for putting on the waterproof accessory.
[0040] The waterproof protective accessory 10 can also be installed by a third party, in a manner similar to the description given above.
[0041] Naturally, the examples shown in the figures and discussed above are given for illustrative purposes only and are not limiting.
[0042] According to a variant of use, the waterproof accessory is not turned over at the end of the assembly operations, so that the waterproof accessory is used with the sealing tapes 24 and 28 then facing outwards, opposite the reference axis, in the position of figures 2 and 3.
[0043] According to another embodiment, one of the two ends 15 of the main body 12 is closed by a part forming a bottom. This variant is intended to protect the end of a limb, in this case the hand or the foot.
[0044] According to another embodiment, the material from which the first layer of contact material is made is different from the material from which the second layer of contact material is made. The material(s) chosen for the layers of contact material must be compatible with the various welding and bonding operations envisaged.
[0045] According to another embodiment, the laminate comprises only two layers, namely a layer of sealing material 18A, 14A and the first layer 18B, 14B of contact material covering one side of the sealing material layer, and used for welding and bonding operations.
