Battery manufacturing device and battery manufacturing method using the same

[0001] Cross-citation with related application(s)

[0002] This application claims the benefit of priority to Korean Patent Application No. 10-2023-0123278, filed September 15, 2023, the entire contents of which are incorporated herein by reference.

[0003] The present invention relates to a battery manufacturing device and a battery manufacturing method using the same, and more specifically, to a battery manufacturing device capable of measuring the thickness of a substrate while reducing the footprint occupied by process equipment, and a battery manufacturing method using the same.

[0004] In modern society, the widespread use of portable devices like cell phones, laptops, camcorders, and digital cameras, as well as energy storage systems (ESS), has led to active development of related technologies. Furthermore, rechargeable secondary batteries are increasingly being used as power sources for electric vehicles (EVs), hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (P-HEVs) to address air pollution issues caused by conventional gasoline-powered vehicles. This, in turn, heightens the need for further development of these batteries.

[0005] Currently commercialized secondary batteries include nickel-cadmium batteries, nickel-hydrogen batteries, nickel-zinc batteries, and lithium secondary batteries. Among these, lithium secondary batteries are receiving the most attention due to their advantages of free charging and discharging, low self-discharge rate, and high energy density.

[0006] The manufacturing process for these lithium secondary batteries is broadly divided into three stages: electrode manufacturing, assembly, and formation. This electrode process is further subdivided into active material mixing, electrode coating, rolling, slitting, and coiling. In particular, measuring electrode thickness during the electrode manufacturing process is essential for ensuring electrode production reliability.

[0007] Figure 1 is a conceptual diagram showing a battery manufacturing device according to conventional technology.

[0008] Referring to FIG. 1, a battery manufacturing device (1) may include an electrode coating device (3), a rolling device (4), and an electrode thickness measuring device (5).

[0009] In general, when manufacturing an electrode assembly of a secondary battery, a process of coating a positive electrode active material and a negative electrode active material on a positive electrode current collector and a negative electrode current collector, respectively, is performed, and the secondary battery includes an electrode having an active material layer formed on a current collector. The positive electrode active material layer and the negative electrode active material layer need to be formed with a uniform thickness on the current collector in order to make the characteristics of the secondary battery uniform. The electrode coating device (3) is a device for uniformly coating an electrode active material on the electrode current collector. The electrode coating device (3) dispenses and applies an active material slurry on a transported current collector. The active material slurry dispensed from the electrode coating device (3) is widely applied to one surface of the current collector to form an active material layer.

[0010] The rolling device (4) is a device for compressing the electrode to a desired thickness by passing it between two pressurized rolls heated at a high temperature in order to reduce the thickness of the electrode after the coating process to increase the capacity density and increase the adhesion between the electrode current collector and the electrode active material.

[0011] The electrode thickness measuring device (5) is a device for measuring the thickness of the electrode (2). The electrode thickness measuring device (5) uses, for example, X-ray, b-ray, laser confocal, etc., or uses a method in which the tip physically contacts the electrode (2) to directly measure the thickness of the electrode (2). However, this method has problems such as difficulty in accurate measurement due to differences in reflectivity, absorption rate, etc. of the electrode (2), or difficulty in maintaining the zero point of the tip. In addition, since the thickness of the electrode (2) is measured while the electrode (2) is moving, there is a concern that an error may occur due to vibration. For this reason, a problem may arise in the reliability of the thickness measurement of the electrode (2) using the electrode thickness measuring device (5).

[0012] In addition, the electrode thickness measuring device (5) can be placed before and after the electrode (2) passes through the electrode coating device (3), rolling device (4), etc., in order to measure the thickness of the electrode (2) while the electrode (2) is running. Therefore, the battery manufacturing device (1) needs to secure space for installing the electrode thickness measuring device (5). This causes a problem in that the footprint occupied by process equipment such as the electrode thickness measuring device (5) increases.

[0013] The purpose of the present invention is to provide a battery manufacturing device capable of measuring the thickness of a substrate while reducing the footprint occupied by process equipment, and a battery manufacturing method using the same.

[0014] However, the problems to be solved by the embodiments of the present invention are not limited to the problems described above and can be expanded in various ways within the scope of the technical ideas included in the present invention.

[0015] A battery manufacturing device according to one embodiment of the present invention may include a first pressure roll that rotates around a first rotational axis, a second pressure roll that forms a rolling gap through which a substrate passes together with the first pressure roll and rotates around a second rotational axis, a first sensor that measures a thickness of a substrate passing through the first pressure roll and the second pressure roll, and a second sensor that measures a load of at least one rotational axis among the first rotational axis connected to the first pressure roll and the second rotational axis connected to the second pressure roll.

[0016] The thickness of the above-mentioned substrate can be calculated as the difference between the distance between the first rotation axis and the second rotation axis and the sum of the thickness of the first pressure roll and the thickness of the second pressure roll.

[0017] The first sensor may be a distance measuring sensor that non-contactly measures the distance between the first rotation axis and the second rotation axis.

[0018] The distance measuring sensor includes a first distance measuring sensor disposed on one side of one of the first pressure roll and the second pressure roll and a second distance measuring sensor disposed on the other side, and a first distance measuring sensor is measured between the first rotation axis and the second rotation axis by the first distance measuring sensor, a second distance measuring sensor is measured between the first rotation axis and the second rotation axis, and a thickness of the substrate can be calculated by an average value of the first distance and the second distance.

[0019] The second sensor may be a load cell that measures the load of the rotational axis connected to the pressure roll.

[0020] The load cell may include a pair of first load cells each disposed on both sides of the first rotation axis of the first pressure roll, and a pair of second load cells each disposed on both sides of the second rotation axis of the second pressure roll.

[0021] The above battery manufacturing device may further include a processor that compares a deviation in load on both sides of the first rotational axis measured by the pair of first load cells with a first reference value, and compares a deviation in load on both sides of the second rotational axis measured by the pair of second load cells with a second reference value.

[0022] The above first reference value and the above second reference value may be different from each other.

[0023] The processor can measure the thickness of the substrate by the first sensor when the deviation of the load of the first rotation axis and the deviation of the load of the second rotation axis are respectively less than or equal to the first reference value and the second reference value.

[0024] The processor may determine that there is an abnormality in the pressure roll in at least one of the cases where the deviation of the load of the first rotational axis exceeds the first reference value and the deviation of the load of the second rotational axis exceeds the second reference value.

[0025] If the processor determines that there is an abnormality in the pressure roll, it can output an alarm signal and stop the operation of the pressure roll.

[0026] The above-described material may be an electrode including a current collector and an active material applied to one or both sides of the current collector.

[0027] A battery manufacturing method using a battery manufacturing device including a first pressure roll rotating around a first rotational axis and a second pressure roll rotating around a second rotational axis, the second pressure roll forming a rolling gap through which a substrate passes together with the first pressure roll, may include a step of measuring a load of at least one rotational axis among the first rotational axis connected to the first pressure roll and the second rotational axis connected to the second pressure roll, and a step of measuring a thickness of the substrate.

[0028] The battery manufacturing method may further include a step of comparing a deviation of the load of the at least one rotational axis with a predetermined reference value after measuring the load of the at least one rotational axis.

[0029] The load on both sides of at least one of the above rotational axes can be measured.

[0030] The above battery manufacturing method may further include a step of outputting an alarm signal indicating that there is an abnormality in the pressure roll and stopping the operation of the pressure roll when the deviation of the load of the at least one rotational axis exceeds the predetermined reference value.

[0031] The above battery manufacturing method can perform a step of measuring the thickness of the substrate when the deviation is below the predetermined standard value.

[0032] The step of measuring the thickness of the substrate may include the step of measuring a distance between the first rotation axis and the second rotation axis, and the step of calculating the thickness of the substrate as a difference between the distance between the first rotation axis and the second rotation axis and the sum of the thickness of the first pressure roll and the thickness of the second pressure roll.

[0033] Unlike conventional techniques, the battery manufacturing device according to one embodiment of the present invention does not require space for installing measuring equipment to measure the thickness of the substrate, thereby reducing the footprint of the measuring equipment. Furthermore, since the thickness of the substrate is not directly measured, errors due to the material of the substrate are eliminated, and errors due to vibrations generated by the movement of the substrate can be reduced.

[0034] In addition, the battery manufacturing device according to one embodiment of the present invention can detect an abnormality in the pressure roll during the battery manufacturing process. That is, the battery manufacturing device measures the thickness of the substrate after determining whether an abnormality has occurred in the state of the pressure roll and / or the substrate, thereby improving the reliability of the thickness measurement of the substrate.

[0035] The effects of the present invention are not limited to the effects mentioned above, and other effects not mentioned will be clearly understood by those skilled in the art from the description of the claims.

[0043] Hereinafter, various embodiments of the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the attached drawings so that those skilled in the art can easily implement the invention. The present invention may be implemented in various different forms and is not limited to the embodiments described herein.

[0044] In order to clearly explain the present invention, parts that are not related to the description are omitted, and the same reference numerals are used for identical or similar components throughout the specification.

[0045] Furthermore, the sizes and thicknesses of each component shown in the drawings are arbitrarily indicated for convenience of explanation, and thus the present invention is not necessarily limited to the illustrated components. In the drawings, the thicknesses are enlarged to clearly represent various layers and regions. Furthermore, in the drawings, the thicknesses of some layers and regions are exaggerated for convenience of explanation.

[0046] Furthermore, when we say that a layer, membrane, region, plate, or other part is "on" or "over" another part, this includes not only cases where it is "directly on" the other part, but also cases where there are other parts in between. Conversely, when we say that a part is "directly on" another part, we mean that there are no other parts in between. Furthermore, saying that a part is "on" or "over" a reference part means that it is located above or below the reference part, and does not necessarily mean that it is located "above" or "over" the reference part in the opposite direction of gravity.

[0047] Additionally, throughout the specification, whenever a part is said to "include" a component, this does not mean that it excludes other components, but rather that it may include other components, unless otherwise specifically stated.

[0048] Additionally, throughout the specification, when we say "in plan", we mean when the target portion is viewed from above, and when we say "in cross section", we mean when the target portion is viewed from the side in a cross-section cut vertically.

[0049] Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of a battery manufacturing apparatus according to one embodiment of the present invention. Fig. 3 is a side view of the first pressure roll of the battery manufacturing apparatus illustrated in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the battery manufacturing apparatus illustrated in Fig. 2.

[0050] Referring to FIGS. 2 to 4, a battery manufacturing device (100) includes a first pressure roll (101) that rotates around a first rotation axis (111), a second pressure roll (102) that forms a rolling gap through which a substrate passes together with the first pressure roll (101) and rotates around a second rotation axis (112), a first sensor (120) that measures a thickness of a substrate (10) passing between the first pressure roll (101) and the second pressure roll (102), and a second sensor (130) that measures a load of at least one rotation axis among the first rotation axis (111) connected to the first pressure roll (101) and the second rotation axis (112) connected to the second pressure roll (102). Meanwhile, in the drawings referenced in the following description, the first pressure roll (101) and the second pressure roll (102) are illustrated as being arranged on a vertical plane, but the arrangement of the first pressure roll (101) and the second pressure roll (102) is not limited to the illustrated form. For example, the first pressure roll (101) and the second pressure roll (102) may be arranged parallel to each other on the same horizontal plane.

[0051] The substrate (10) passing through the first pressure roll (101) and the second pressure roll (102) has a thickness that decreases as it passes through the pair of pressure rolls (101, 102). For example, the substrate (10) before passing through the pair of pressure rolls (101, 102) has a thickness of t1, but the substrate (10) after passing through the pair of pressure rolls (101, 102) has a thickness of t2.

[0052] The substrate (10) passing through a pair of pressurized rolls (101, 102) may be, for example, an electrode including an active material. Specifically, the electrode may be an electrode mixture in which a positive or negative electrode active material, a conductive material, and a binder are mixed with a current collector and applied to one or both sides. However, the type of the substrate (10) is not limited to what has been described above. The substrate (10) may be included in an embodiment of the present invention as long as it has a configuration that can pass between a pair of pressurized rolls (101, 102), and for example, the substrate (10) may be a battery semi-finished product such as a separator, a mono cell, a half cell, a pouch, etc.

[0053] The first sensor (120) may be a distance measuring sensor that non-contactly measures the distance (D) between the first rotation axis (111) and the second rotation axis (112).

[0054] For example, the distance measuring sensor (120) can measure the distance (D) by emitting light (e.g., laser or infrared rays) from a light source from one of the first rotation axis (111) and the second rotation axis (112) to the other. That is, the distance measuring sensor (120) emits light from a light emitting unit from one of the first rotation axis (111) and the second rotation axis (112) to the other and receives the reflected light. The distance measuring sensor (120) can non-contactly measure the distance (D) between the first rotation axis (111) and the second rotation axis (112) by measuring the amount of received light or the amount of voltage change caused by the received light.

[0055] The thickness (t2) of the substrate (10) passing through the first pressure roll (101) and the second pressure roll (102) can be calculated from the distance (D) between the first rotation axis (111) and the second rotation axis (112) measured by the distance measuring sensor (120). For example, the thickness (t2) of the substrate (10) passing through the first pressure roll (101) and the second pressure roll (102) can be calculated as the difference between the distance (D) between the first rotation axis (111) and the second rotation axis (112) and the sum of the thickness (T1) of the first pressure roll (101) and the thickness (T2) of the second pressure roll (102), as in the following mathematical expression 1.

[0056]

[0057] At this time, the thickness (T1) of the first pressure roll (101) and the thickness (T2) of the second pressure roll (102) may be measured in advance or may be a value predetermined by the specifications of each pressure roll (101, 102) itself.

[0058] The distance measuring sensor (120) may be arranged on only one side of either the first rotation axis (111) or the second rotation axis (112), but as illustrated in FIG. 3, it is preferable to arrange it on both sides. That is, the distance measuring sensor (120) may include a first distance measuring sensor (121) arranged on one side of either the first pressure roll (101) or the second pressure roll (102), and a second distance measuring sensor (122) arranged on the other side.

[0059] Accordingly, a first distance (D1) between the first rotation axis (111) and the second rotation axis (112) can be measured by the first distance measuring sensor (121), and a second distance (D2) between the first rotation axis (111) and the second rotation axis (112) can be measured by the second distance measuring sensor (122). The thickness of the above-described substrate (10) can be calculated by the average value of the first distance (D1) and the second distance (D2).

[0060] Since the battery manufacturing device according to embodiments of the present invention has a distance measuring sensor (120) disposed on the rotational axis (111, 112) of the pressure roll (101, 102), there is no need to add a separate device for measuring the thickness of the substrate (10). Accordingly, the footprint occupied by the separate process device can be reduced, and the cost of installing the separate process device can also be reduced. In addition, since the battery manufacturing device according to embodiments of the present invention does not directly measure the thickness of the substrate (10), but measures the distance of the rotational axis (111, 112) of the pressure roll (101, 102) and converts the thickness of the substrate (10), an error due to the material of the substrate (10) does not occur, and an error due to vibration generated as the substrate (10) runs can be reduced.

[0061] Meanwhile, in FIG. 3, for convenience of explanation, the first distance measuring sensor (121) and the second distance measuring sensor (122) are illustrated as being connected to both ends of the first rotation axis (111), respectively. However, the first distance measuring sensor (121) and the second distance measuring sensor (122) are structures that are not affected by the rotation of the first rotation axis (111). For example, the battery manufacturing device (100) may include a housing that supports the first rotation axis (111) and the second rotation axis (112). The first rotation axis (111) and the second rotation axis (112) can rotate without affecting the housing during rotation. The first distance measuring sensor (121) and the second distance measuring sensor (122) are arranged in the housing so that the first rotation axis (111) and the second rotation axis (112) can measure the distance (D) between the first rotation axis (111) and the second rotation axis (112) without being affected by rotation.

[0062] The second sensor (130) is a device for measuring information about the load of the rotational shaft (111, 112) connected to the pressure roll (101, 102). The second sensor (130) may be, for example, a load cell, and preferably, the load cell may be a bearing load cell including a bearing and a load cell. The load cell (130) is a type of load detection sensor that uses an elastic body that changes proportionally by an external force and a strain gauge that converts it into an electrical signal. Therefore, the load cell (130) can detect information about the load, including the magnitude of the load applied to the rotational shaft (111, 112) of the pressure roll (101, 102), the direction of the load applied to the rotational shaft (111, 112), etc. However, for the convenience of explanation, the load cell (130) will be described below as detecting the load of the rotational shaft (111, 112).

[0063] The load cell (130) may include a pair of first load cells (131) arranged on both sides of the first rotation axis (111) of the first pressure roll (101) and a pair of second load cells (132) arranged on both sides of the second rotation axis (112) of the second pressure roll (102). The loads applied to both sides of the first rotation axis (111) and both sides of the second rotation axis (112) may be detected through the pair of first load cells (131) and the pair of second load cells (132).

[0064] The battery manufacturing device (100) may include a processor (not shown) that compares each of a deviation in load on both sides of the first rotation axis (111) measured by a pair of first load cells (131) and a deviation in load on both sides of the second rotation axis (112) measured by a pair of second load cells (132) with a predetermined reference value. The processor may include, for example, a micro controller unit (MCU). The processor may be provided inside the battery manufacturing device (100) or separately provided outside the battery manufacturing device (100) to remotely communicate with the battery manufacturing device (100). The form of the processor may be variously modified or changed depending on the environment in which the present invention is implemented.

[0065] At this time, the predetermined reference value may be set according to the type of the substrate (10) passing through the first pressure roll (101) and the second pressure roll (102). In addition, the deviation of the load on both sides of the first rotation axis (111) measured by a pair of first load cells (131) may be compared with the first reference value, and the deviation of the load on both sides of the second rotation axis (112) measured by a pair of second load cells (132) may be compared with the second reference value. At this time, the first reference value and the second reference value may be the same or different from each other.

[0066] For example, when the first pressure roll (101) and the second pressure roll (102) are arranged in parallel on the same horizontal plane, the deviation of the load on both sides of the first rotation (111) of the first pressure roll (101) and the deviation of the load on both sides of the second rotation axis (112) of the second pressure roll (102) can be compared with the same reference value.

[0067] As another example, when the first pressure roll (101) and the second pressure roll (102) are not arranged on the same horizontal plane (for example, when the first pressure roll (101) and the second pressure roll (102) are arranged on a vertical plane), the load of the first rotation axis (111) applied to the pair of first load cells (131) and the load of the second rotation axis (112) applied to the pair of second load cells (132) may be different from each other due to the loads of the first pressure roll (101) and the second pressure roll (102) themselves. In such a case, the deviation of the load on both sides of the first rotation (111) of the first pressure roll (101) may be compared with a first reference value, and the deviation of the load on both sides of the second rotation axis (112) of the second pressure roll (102) may be compared with a second reference value that is different from the first reference value.

[0068] The processor can determine that the pressure rolls (101, 102) are in a normal state if the deviation of each load is below a reference value. For example, the processor can determine that the pressure rolls (101, 102) are in a normal state if the deviation of the load of the first rotation shaft (111) and the deviation of the load of the second rotation shaft (112) are below a first reference value and a second reference value, respectively. If the processor determines that the pressure rolls are in a normal state, the thickness of the substrate (10) can be measured by the first sensor (120).

[0069] The processor may determine that there is a problem with the pressure rolls (101, 102) if the deviation of each load exceeds a reference value. For example, the processor may determine that there is a problem with the pressure rolls (101, 102) if at least one of the cases where the deviation of the load of the first rotation shaft (111) exceeds the first reference value and the case where the deviation of the load of the second rotation shaft (112) exceeds the second reference value. Meanwhile, a detailed example of a case where it is determined that there is a problem with the pressure rolls (101, 102) will be described later.

[0070] If the processor determines that there is an abnormality in the pressure rolls (101, 102), it can output an alarm signal and stop the operation of the pressure rolls (101, 102). At this time, the alarm signal can be output through a speaker (not shown). As another example, the alarm signal can also be output through a display (not shown). However, the alarm signal is not limited to what has been described above, and if it can notify the operator of an abnormality by applying various stimuli such as auditory or visual stimuli, it can be included in the embodiment of the present invention. Since the battery manufacturing device (100) outputs an alarm signal and stops the operation of the pressure rolls (101, 102) when an abnormality occurs in the pressure rolls (101, 102), it enables the operator to respond quickly.

[0071] Fig. 5 is a drawing illustrating an example of an abnormality in the load applied to a rotating shaft connected to a pressure roll. Fig. 6 is a drawing illustrating another example of an abnormality in the load applied to a rotating shaft connected to a pressure roll.

[0072] Referring to FIG. 5, the first rotational axis (111) of the first pressure roll (101) is distorted due to external impact, vibration of the device, or other reasons, and the first rotational axis (111) is tilted to one side (right side in the drawing). Accordingly, the load applied to the first load cell (131) arranged on the right side of the first rotational axis (111) may increase, and the load applied to the first load cell (131) arranged on the left side may decrease. If the distortion generated in the first pressure roll (101) increases, the deviation of the load measured at each first load cell (131) arranged on the first pressure roll (101) may exceed a predetermined reference value. In this case, the processor may determine that there is a problem with the first pressure roll (101).

[0073] Referring to FIG. 6, a case is shown where a part (10a) of the substrate (10) protrudes upward due to reasons such as uneven application of a material to the substrate (10), and thus the thickness of the substrate (10) is uneven. Accordingly, the first pressure roll (101) may receive a force in the opposite direction to the direction in which the first pressure roll (101) presses the substrate (10) from the left side of the first rotation axis (111). Accordingly, the load applied to the first load cell (131) arranged on the right side of the first rotation axis (111) may increase, and the load applied to the first load cell (131) arranged on the left side may decrease. When the material is unevenly applied to the substrate (10), the deviation of the load measured at each first load cell (131) arranged on the first pressure roll (101) may exceed a predetermined reference value. In this case, the processor may determine that there is an abnormality in the first pressure roll (101).

[0074] As described above, when an abnormality occurs in the pressure rolls (101, 102) and / or the substrate (10), a deviation greater than a predetermined standard occurs in the load measured from the load cell disposed in the pressure roll where the abnormality occurs among the pair of first load cells (131) and the pair of second load cells (132). Therefore, it is possible to identify the pressure roll where the abnormality occurs among the first pressure roll (101) and the second pressure roll (102). In addition, it is possible to identify the part where the abnormality occurs in the substrate (10) through the load distribution of the pressure roll where the abnormality occurs. As described above, the battery manufacturing device (100) according to one embodiment of the present invention enables the identification of the part where the abnormality occurs, and thus enables a quick response by the operator.

[0075] Figure 7 is a flowchart for explaining a battery manufacturing method using a battery manufacturing device according to one embodiment of the present invention.

[0076] The battery manufacturing method can be performed using the battery manufacturing device (100) described above. However, a detailed description of each step of the battery manufacturing method described below will be omitted as it has been described in the battery manufacturing device (100) with reference to FIGS. 2 to 6.

[0078] The battery manufacturing method can perform a step (S30) of measuring the thickness of the substrate (10) when the deviation of the load of at least one rotation axis is below a predetermined standard value in step S20.

[0079] The step (S30) of measuring the thickness of the substrate (10) may include a step (S31) of measuring the distance between the first rotation axis (111) and the second rotation axis (112) and a step (S32) of calculating the thickness of the substrate (10) based on the distance between the first rotation axis (111) and the second rotation axis (112).

[0080] In step S32, the thickness of the substrate (10) can be calculated as the difference between the gap between the first rotation axis (111) and the second rotation axis (112) and the sum of the thickness of the first pressure roll (101) and the thickness of the second pressure roll (102).

[0081] In addition, the battery manufacturing method may include a step (S40) of outputting an alarm signal indicating that there is an abnormality in the pressure roll (101, 102) and stopping the operation of the pressure roll (101, 102) when the deviation of the load of at least one rotation axis exceeds a predetermined reference value in step S20.

[0082] As described above, the battery manufacturing method according to one embodiment of the present invention can detect an abnormality in the pressure rolls (101, 102) because it measures the deviation in the load of the rotation shafts (111, 112) of the pressure rolls (101, 102) during the battery manufacturing process. That is, the battery manufacturing method according to one embodiment of the present invention can improve the reliability of the thickness measurement of the substrate because it measures the thickness of the substrate after determining whether an abnormality has occurred in the state of the pressure roll and / or the substrate.
