Description

Composition for removing body odor

[0001] This application claims priority to Republic of Korea Application No. 10-2023-0122776, filed September 14, 2023, the entire disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference.

[0002] The present disclosure relates to a composition for removing body-derived odor.

[0003] Body odor generally occurs when sweat secreted from the body's sweat glands is broken down by microorganisms and bacteria. Sweat is secreted by eccrine sweat glands, which are distributed throughout the body, or apocrine sweat glands, which are found in areas with a lot of body hair, such as the armpits. The fats, proteins, sebum, and contaminants contained in this sweat are broken down by microorganisms and bacteria, resulting in unpleasant body odors such as body odor, foot odor, and head odor.

[0004] Excessive sweat or sebum secretion due to strenuous exercise or stress, or the consumption of greasy and oily foods, along with the secretion of protein and fat, can cause strong body odor. Furthermore, consuming foods with strong odors, such as onions, garlic, and curry; consuming coffee, chocolate, and cola, which contain a lot of caffeine; drinking alcohol, which increases the body's protein and fat stores; and smoking, which leaves a pleasant smell on the body, can also cause body odor. This body odor manifests as a unique smell depending on gender and age, such as men, women, babies, and the elderly, and in some cases, it can be particularly unpleasant.

[0005] To control body odor, methods such as sweat suppression, antibacterial, deodorizing, and masking are used. Sweat suppression temporarily suppresses sweat production by constricting sweat pores, thereby controlling odor. Deodorant products may use antiperspirants such as aluminum chloride, aluminum chlorohydrate, and aluminum-zirconium compounds. Antibacterial suppression inhibits bacteria or microorganisms that contribute to odor production. Antimicrobial agents such as triclosan, trichlorocarban, and benzalkonium chloride may be used for this purpose. Deodorization is a method of controlling odor by physically or chemically breaking down or adsorbing the generated odor, thereby removing the proteins or fatty acids that cause it. Odor masking involves using fragrance to mask body odor. Deodorization has limitations in its odor control effectiveness, and the most common form of masking, if used with the wrong fragrance, can actually create an unpleasant odor. Therefore, the choice of fragrance is crucial when choosing a deodorizing or masking method. Among body odor-causing agents, nonenal increases with age, isovaleric acid causes foot odor, and diacetyl causes head odor. Existing body odor suppression products have traditionally used fresh scents (citrus, mint) or baby powder-like scents to mask body odor. However, with the continued introduction of new international regulations regarding the safety of fragrance compositions, the development of new, appropriate fragrances is constantly needed.

[0006] Meanwhile, techniques are also known, such as using highly volatile fragrance ingredients to evaporate faster than the offending odor, masking it to make it less noticeable (Japanese Patent No. 2804993), or combining fragrance ingredients with excellent sensory harmonizing effects with specific offending odors (U.S. Patent Publication No. 2010-0254927). However, these techniques alone are not sufficient to remove body odor, and the development of new fragrance ingredients that can effectively mask and remove body odor is urgently needed.

[0007] The problem to be solved by the present disclosure is to provide a fragrance composition that can effectively remove a specific body odor caused by body odor, preferably nonenal, isovaleric acid, or diacetyl.

[0008] In addition, the problem that the present disclosure seeks to solve is to provide a fragrance composition that not only has an effect of removing body-derived odor but also has excellent fragrance harmony.

[0009] To solve the above problem, the inventors of the present disclosure sought to select fragrance substances with excellent body odor removal and masking effects, considering the fragrance intensity and fragrance harmony among countless natural or synthetic fragrances. Accordingly, the inventors discovered that dimethyl hydroquinone can significantly mask and remove body odors caused by nonenal, isovaleric acid, diacetyl, etc. In addition, the inventors confirmed that when dimethyl hydroquinone is combined with a fragrance, not only the body odor masking and removal effect is significantly increased, but also the fragrance harmony is significantly improved, thereby completing the present invention.

[0010] The present disclosure provides a fragrance composition comprising dimethylhydroquinone as an active ingredient. Another name for the dimethylhydroquinone is para-dimethylhydroquinone or 1,4-dimethoxybenzene, and its CAS number is 150-78-7. The fragrance composition can effectively remove body-borne odors. Preferably, the fragrance composition can be used to remove body-borne odors. Preferably, the body-borne odor can refer to an unpleasant odor generated from the body, and may include, but is not limited to, head odor, body odor, or foot odor.

[0011] In one aspect of the present disclosure, among the unpleasant odors generated from the human body, components that cause head odor include isovaleric acid, pentanoic acid, isobutyric acid, heptanal, hexanoic acid, valeraldehyde, indole, or diacetyl. In addition, components that cause body odor include 2-nonenal, and components that cause foot odor include isovaleric acid. The fragrance composition of the present disclosure can effectively remove unpleasant odors generated by components that cause head odor, body odor, or foot odor.

[0012] In one aspect of the present disclosure, the dimethylhydroquinone may be included in an amount of 0.1 to 10 wt%, preferably 0.2 to 2 wt%, and more preferably 0.3 to 1 wt%, relative to the total weight of the fragrance composition. If the content of the dimethylhydroquinone is less than 0.1 wt%, the effect of removing body odor may be insufficient, and if it exceeds 10 wt%, the satisfaction of the fragrance may decrease due to excessive fragrance release of the dimethylhydroquinone.

[0013] In one aspect of the present disclosure, the fragrance composition may comprise a conventional fragrance in addition to dimethylhydroquinone.

[0014] In one aspect of the present disclosure, the fragrance other than dimethylhydroquinone may include one or more selected from the group consisting of methyldihydrojasmonate, ethylene brassylate, linalool, benzyl salicylate, benzyl acetate, tetramethylacetyloctahydronaphthalene, limonene, hexylcinnamal, hexamethylindanopyran, benzyl benzoate, acetylhexamethyltetralin, isobutylmethyltetrahydropyranol, linalyl acetate, beta-caryophyllene, ethyllinalool, hydroxycitronellal, ionone, citronellol, methyl anthranilate, cinnamyl alcohol, anisaldehyde, terpineol, and geraniol.

[0015] In one aspect of the present disclosure, the fragrance other than dimethylhydroquinone may include one or more selected from the group consisting of methyldihydrojasmonate, ethylene brassylate, linalool, benzyl salicylate, benzyl acetate, and tetramethylacetyloctahydronaphthalene. Preferably, the fragrance may include two or more of the above ingredients, and more preferably, the fragrance may include all of the above ingredients.

[0016] Additionally, in one aspect of the present disclosure, the fragrance other than dimethylhydroquinone may include one or more selected from the group consisting of orange oil, limonene, methyldihydrojasmonate, and linalool. Preferably, the fragrance may include two or more of the above ingredients, and more preferably, the fragrance may include all of the above ingredients.

[0017] Additionally, in one aspect of the present disclosure, the fragrance other than dimethylhydroquinone may include one or more selected from the group consisting of methyldihydrojasmonate, linalool, hexylcinnamal, benzyl acetate, and hexamethylindanopyran. Preferably, the fragrance may include two or more of the above ingredients, and more preferably, the fragrance may include all of the above ingredients.

[0018] In addition, in one aspect of the present disclosure, the fragrance other than dimethylhydroquinone may include at least one selected from the group consisting of hexamethylindanopyran, benzyl benzoate, ethylene brassylate, acetylhexamethyltetralin, and isobutylmethyltetrahydropyranol. Preferably, the fragrance may include two or more of the above ingredients, and more preferably, the fragrance may include all of the above ingredients.

[0019] Additionally, in one aspect of the present disclosure, the fragrance other than dimethylhydroquinone may include one or more selected from the group consisting of linalyl acetate, linalool, beta-caryophyllene, and geraniol. Preferably, the fragrance may include two or more of the above ingredients, and more preferably, the fragrance may include all of the above ingredients.

[0020] In one aspect of the present disclosure, the fragrance other than dimethylhydroquinone may be present in an amount of 10 to 99.9 wt%, preferably 15 to 99.9 wt%, and more preferably 20 to 99.9 wt%, based on the total weight of the fragrance composition. If the fragrance other than dimethylhydroquinone is less than 10 wt% based on the total weight of the composition, the effect of removing body-derived off-odor may be insufficient and the fragrance preference may be reduced. In addition, if the fragrance other than dimethylhydroquinone is greater than 99.9 wt% based on the total weight of the composition, the content of dimethylhydroquinone may be relatively low, resulting in an insufficient effect of removing body-derived off-odor.

[0021] In one aspect of the present disclosure, the fragrance composition may include a solvent. Preferably, the solvent may be included in the fragrance composition as a remainder excluding dimethylhydroquinone and the fragrance, and the solvent may include dipropylene glycol or the like.

[0022] In one aspect of the present disclosure, the weight ratio of the dimethylhydroquinone and the fragrance may be 1:10 to 1000, preferably 1:50 to 500, and more preferably 1:100 to 300 (dimethylhydroquinone: fragrance). When the dimethylhydroquinone and the fragrance are within the weight ratio range, the removal of body odor and fragrance harmony are remarkably excellent.

[0023] In one aspect of the present disclosure, the fragrance composition may be included in a cosmetic composition, a personal care composition, a skin external preparation composition, or a daily necessities composition.

[0024] In one aspect of the present disclosure, in the cosmetic composition, the fragrance composition may be included in an amount of 0.001 to 10 wt%, preferably 0.005 to 5 wt%, and more preferably 0.01 to 3 wt%, based on the total weight of the cosmetic composition. If the fragrance composition is included in an amount of less than 0.001 wt%, based on the total weight of the cosmetic composition, the effect of removing body-derived odor may be insufficient, and if it is included in an amount of more than 10 wt%, the stability of the formulation may be reduced.

[0025] In one aspect of the present disclosure, in the cosmetic composition, the dimethylhydroquinone may be included in an amount of 0.000005 to 0.05 wt%, preferably 0.000025 to 0.025 wt%, and more preferably 0.00005 to 0.015 wt%, based on the total weight of the cosmetic composition. When the dimethylhydroquinone is included in an amount of less than 0.000005 wt% based on the total weight of the cosmetic composition, the effect of removing body odor may be insufficient, and when it is included in an amount of more than 0.05 wt%, the preference for fragrance may be reduced.

[0026] Typically, cosmetic compositions may contain large amounts of cationic surfactants to stabilize fragrances. However, such high concentrations of cationic surfactants or fragrance compounds pose a risk of plastic containers bursting. This limitation limits the maximum fragrance content, and if the maximum fragrance content is limited, the off-odor removal effect may be insufficient. Therefore, the fragrance composition of the present disclosure, by including dimethylhydroquinone as an active ingredient, exhibits remarkably excellent effects in removing body-borne off-odors without the problems associated with excessive use of the cationic surfactant or fragrance.

[0027] In addition, the personal care composition, skin external preparation composition, or daily necessities composition may also include the fragrance composition in the above content range, similar to the cosmetic composition.

[0028] In one aspect of the present disclosure, the cosmetic composition can be applied to the skin, hair, or scalp and can be used, for example, as a perfume, deodorant, or the like. The cosmetic composition can be a wash-off product or a leave-on product.

[0029] In addition, the personal care composition may be used for purposes such as skin care, hair care, body care, or foot care. For example, the skin care composition may include a skin, essence, lotion, eye cream, or cream, the hair care composition may include a shampoo, conditioner, treatment, or hair essence, and the body care or foot care composition may include a body cleanser, body lotion, body powder, body mist, soap, or foot shampoo, but is not limited thereto.

[0030] In addition, the above-mentioned external skin composition may include, but is not limited to, ointments, lotions, ointments, suspensions, emulsions, creams, gels, sprays, papules, ointments, patches, or water patches.

[0031] In addition, the above-mentioned household product composition may include, but is not limited to, kitchenware such as kitchen detergents, household products, cleaning agents, laundry detergents, fabric softeners, air fresheners, waxes, emulsifiers, or lubricants.

[0032] In one aspect of the present disclosure, the cosmetic composition, personal care composition, external skin preparation composition, or daily necessities composition may be prepared using a conventional method. Furthermore, the cosmetic composition, personal care composition, external skin preparation composition, or daily necessities composition may include conventional auxiliary ingredients.

[0033] The term 'removal' as used herein may mean that the fragrance ingredient chemically reacts with a substance that causes body-borne odor, thereby reducing the odor.

[0034] The term "masking" as used herein may refer to the use of a fragrance ingredient to obscure the perception of an unpleasant or repulsive odor. Furthermore, unlike the practice of removing an odor through chemical reaction deodorization, "masking" may refer to a technique of using another fragrance ingredient to obscure the sensory perception of the causative agent.

[0035] The term 'fragrance harmony' used in the present disclosure may mean that when dimethylhydroquinone is used in combination with another fragrance, it does not harm the fragrance sensory properties of the other fragrance, does not give a foreign fragrance feeling to the user, and provides excellent fragrance preference.

[0036] Additionally, the present disclosure provides a method for removing body-borne odors, comprising applying a fragrance composition comprising dimethylhydroquinone as an active ingredient to a subject. The same descriptions regarding the fragrance composition may be applied to the method for removing body-borne odors. The subject may refer to an object requiring removal of body-borne odors, and such object may be a body part, clothing, or household item that may generate body-borne odors.

[0037] All ingredients described in the present disclosure preferably do not exceed the maximum usage levels stipulated in relevant laws and regulations of Korea, China, the United States, Europe, Japan, etc. (e.g., Regulations on Cosmetic Safety Standards (Korea), Cosmetic Safety Technical Standards (China)). That is, preferably, a cosmetic composition, a personal care composition, a composition for external skin application, or a composition for daily necessities according to the present disclosure contains the ingredients according to the present disclosure within the content limits permitted by relevant laws and regulations of each country.

[0038] The fragrance composition of the present disclosure contains dimethylhydroquinone as an active ingredient, thereby exhibiting a remarkably excellent effect in eliminating body odors, preferably those caused by nonenal, iso-valeric acid, diacetyl, etc. In addition, the dimethylhydroquinone contained in the fragrance composition also exhibits remarkably excellent fragrance compatibility with fragrances.

[0039] Hereinafter, the present invention will be described in detail, using examples and the like, to aid understanding. However, the examples according to the present invention may be modified in various different forms, and the scope of the present invention should not be construed as being limited to the following examples. The examples of the present invention are provided to more fully explain the present invention to those of average skill in the art.

[0057] Meanwhile, Comparative Example 1, which did not contain fragrance or dimethylhydroquinone, showed a deodorization rate of 0%. In addition, Example 1, which did not contain fragrance and only contained dimethylhydroquinone, showed a deodorization rate of 76%.

[0058] As seen in Comparative Examples 2 to 4, even when the fragrance content was increased, the degree of increase in deodorizing efficiency was minimal. Furthermore, applying an excessively high fragrance content beyond the experimental conditions could compromise product stability, cause odor changes over time, and increase the product cost, thus limiting its effectiveness.

[0059] On the other hand, the deodorization rate (76%) of Example 1 containing dimethylhydroquinone was significantly higher than the deodorization rates (45% to 57%) of Comparative Examples 2 to 4 containing various fragrances. Furthermore, it was confirmed that the deodorization rate was significantly improved when a fragrance was combined with dimethylhydroquinone as in Example 2.

[0060]

[0061] Experimental Example 2: Sensory Evaluation of Body-Origin Odor Masking and Fragrance Harmony

[0062] For the above Comparative Example 2 and Example 2, a sensory evaluation was conducted regarding body-derived off-odor masking and fragrance harmony. Fifteen evaluators participated in the sensory evaluation, and questionnaires were used to evaluate body-derived off-odor masking and fragrance harmony on a 5-point scale. The evaluation results are shown in Tables 5 and 6 below.

[0063] Body-derived off-odor masking (5-point scale) Fragrance 1 Comparative Example 23.43 Exemplary Example 24.07

[0064] Fragrance Harmony (5-point scale) Fragrance 1 Comparative Example 23.37 Example 24.03

[0065] When dimethylhydroquinone alone was included as an active ingredient, as in Example 1, it was confirmed that the satisfaction with the fragrance was reduced due to the excessive fragrance of dimethylhydroquinone itself. On the other hand, when dimethylhydroquinone was combined with the fragrance as an active ingredient, as in Example 2, it was confirmed that not only the body-derived odor masking effect but also the fragrance harmony was significantly improved.
