Description

A liquid-cooled battery system

[0001] This application claims priority to Chinese patent applications with application number 202322669500.1 and application number 202311282488.7 filed with the China Patent Office on September 28, 2023. The entire contents of the above applications are incorporated by reference into this application. Technical Field

[0002] The present application relates to the field of battery technology, and in particular to a liquid-cooled battery system. Background Art

[0003] With the explosive growth of the lithium battery energy storage industry, the operational safety and stability of battery systems have received increasing attention within the industry.

[0004] When cylindrical cells are grouped together, the large number and dense grouping of cells causes significant heat generation during the charging and discharging process, impacting product lifespan and safety. Currently, liquid cooling is the mainstream temperature control method for cylindrical battery systems in the industry. For this purpose, cylindrical structures often utilize a serpentine tube liquid cooling plate process. The curved surface of the serpentine tube contacts the cylindrical surface of the cell via a thermal pad or thermally conductive adhesive to transfer heat and dissipate heat. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0005] However, the serpentine tube structure makes the grouping process complicated and the grouping efficiency low, and the contact area between the serpentine tube and the battery cell is small, which can only meet the heat dissipation needs of small cylindrical batteries with smaller diameters. For large cylindrical batteries with larger diameters, this heat dissipation method cannot effectively dissipate heat, and the safety and life of the battery system will still be affected.

[0006] The present application provides a liquid-cooled battery system. The liquid-cooled battery system includes multiple battery cells and a housing. The housing has multiple through-holes on its surface, and a liquid-cooling cavity is formed within the housing. The liquid-cooling cavity is used to circulate a cooling medium. The liquid-cooling cavity is provided with a liquid inlet and a liquid outlet. The battery cells pass through the through-holes and are partially immersed in the cooling medium in the liquid-cooling cavity. Beneficial effects

[0007] The liquid-cooled battery system provided by the present application mainly inserts multiple battery cells into a box body, and then seals the box body with the multiple battery cells inserted. On the one hand, such a structure can make the multiple battery cells directly immersed in the cooling medium in the box body, thereby maximizing the heat dissipation area of the battery cells during charging and power generation. The heat generated by the battery cells during the charging and discharging process is not transferred through the thermal conductive glue but directly to the cooling medium, and the part of the battery cells extending into the box body is immersed in the cooling medium, and the contact area between the battery cells and the immersed cooling medium is maximized, so the heat dissipation efficiency is higher; on the second hand, the present application directly immerses the battery cells into the cooling medium of the liquid-cooled box body to realize the integration of the liquid-cooled box body, and there is no need to set liquid cooling plates, water pipes and joints next to the battery cells, which is easier to implement and helps to improve cost issues; on the third hand, the battery cells are directly set inside the liquid-cooled cavity, which eliminates the installation processes such as gluing, curing, stacking, and hoisting, and has higher production efficiency. [0018] In this application, the word "exemplary" is used to mean "serving as an example, illustration, or description." Any embodiment described in this application as "exemplary" is not necessarily to be construed as preferred or advantageous over other embodiments. The following description is given to enable any person skilled in the art to implement and use the present application. It should be understood that one of ordinary skill in the art can recognize that the present application can be implemented without using these specific details. In other instances, known structures and processes are not described in detail to avoid obscuring the description of the present application with unnecessary detail. Therefore, the present application is not intended to be limited to the embodiments shown, but is to be accorded the widest scope consistent with the principles disclosed herein.

[0019] The battery system is usually accompanied by heat release during the charging and discharging process. During this process, it is generally necessary to cool it down so that the battery system can operate in a more suitable operating temperature environment.

[0020] The battery system usually groups the battery cells 1 into battery modules, and performs air cooling or liquid cooling inside the battery modules. Liquid cooling involves setting up complex serpentine pipes (with coolant inside the serpentine pipes) and thermally conductive glue between adjacent battery modules to transfer and exchange heat. The efficiency of air cooling is lower than that of liquid cooling, but setting up complex serpentine pipes and thermally conductive glue between adjacent battery modules for heat dissipation relies heavily on the heat transfer capacity of the thermally conductive glue itself. In addition, due to the small contact area with the serpentine pipes, the heat dissipation area is small and the heat dissipation efficiency is low. Although it can meet the heat dissipation needs of small battery cells, the heat dissipation efficiency is seriously insufficient for large battery cells, and the installation process is complicated and the material cost is high.

[0021] Based on this, an embodiment of the present application provides a liquid-cooled battery system. Please refer to Figures 1 and 2. Figure 1 is a structural schematic diagram of a liquid-cooled battery system provided in an embodiment of the present application, and Figure 2 is an explosion schematic diagram of a liquid-cooled battery system provided in an embodiment of the present application. The liquid-cooled battery system includes a plurality of battery cells 1 and a box 2. The surface of the box 2 is provided with a plurality of through holes 21. A liquid cooling cavity 22 is formed in the box 2. The interior of the liquid cooling cavity 22 is configured to circulate a cooling medium. The liquid cooling cavity 22 is provided with a liquid inlet 23 and a liquid outlet 24. The battery cells 1 pass through the through holes 21 and are partially immersed in the cooling medium of the liquid cooling cavity 22.

[0022] It should be understood that the contact position between the through hole 21 and the battery cell 1 needs to be sealed to form a sealed liquid cooling cavity 22. The sealing can be performed by applying glue or filling glue to prevent the cooling medium from flowing out of the liquid cooling cavity 22 and affecting other components on the box 2 of the battery system, such as affecting the normal operation of the bus and the battery temperature detection system.

[0023] It should be understood that the shape of the box body 2 can be a cube, a rectangular parallelepiped, a cylinder with a hexagonal top surface, an ellipsoid, or an irregular box body.

[0024] The cooling medium may be a cooling liquid in a common serpentine pipe, for example, water, ionized water, or oil.

[0025] It should be noted that in the relevant technology, during the preparation process, it is necessary to first coat the serpentine tube used for direct contact with the battery cell 1 to achieve heat transfer with glue, then bond the serpentine tube with the battery cell 1, and then cure the glue on the serpentine tube. After that, the battery cell modules with cured glue are stacked into a battery pack, and finally the stacked battery pack is hoisted into a protective box to become a battery pack.

[0026] Between the liquid inlet 23 and the liquid outlet 24 located outside the liquid cooling cavity 22, a device for circulating cooling medium and a heat dissipation device, such as a pressure pump for increasing fluid pressure and an evaporator for quickly dissipating heat to the outside, can be connected. In this way, when the liquid cooling cavity 22 receives a large amount of heat generated during the charging and discharging process of the battery cell 1, the heat is first quickly diluted by a large amount of cooling medium, then carried out through the liquid outlet 24 to the evaporator for external dissipation. The cooling medium, which has fully dissipated heat, is then sent back to the interior of the liquid cooling cavity 22 through the liquid inlet 23 via the pressure pump for preliminary heat dissipation, thereby achieving a good circulating heat dissipation effect.

[0027] The embodiment of the present application inserts a plurality of independently arranged battery cells 1 into a box body 2, and then seals the box body 2 with the plurality of battery cells 1 inserted therein. On the one hand, the use of such a structure enables the plurality of battery cells 1 to be directly immersed in the cooling medium, thereby maximizing the heat dissipation area of the battery cells 1 during charging and power generation. The heat generated by the battery cells 1 during the charging and discharging process does not need to pass through the thermal adhesive but is directly transferred to the cooling medium, and the battery cells 1 are all immersed in the cooling medium on all sides, and the contact area between the battery cells 1 and the cooling medium in which they are immersed is maximized, so the heat dissipation efficiency is higher. On the other hand, the present embodiment directly immerses the battery cells 1 in the cooling medium of the liquid-cooled box body, and there is no need to set up liquid cooling plates, water pipes and joints next to the battery cells, which is easier to implement and helps to improve cost issues. On the other hand, the battery cells 1 are directly set inside the liquid-cooled cavity 22, eliminating the installation processes such as gluing, curing, stacking, and hoisting, and achieving higher production efficiency.

[0028] Please refer to Figures 3 and 4. Figure 3 is a schematic diagram of a longitudinal cross-section of a liquid-cooled battery system provided in an embodiment of the present application, and Figure 4 is an enlarged schematic diagram of section A in Figure 3. In some embodiments of the present application, multiple through-holes 21 are located on one side wall of the housing 2. One end of the battery cell 1 passes through the through-hole 21 and is immersed in the cooling medium of the liquid-cooling cavity 22, while the other end is located outside the liquid-cooling cavity 22.

[0029] In the embodiment of the present application, the box body 2 is set as a box body with a through hole 21 on the top surface, and the bottom end of the battery cell 1 is inserted into the through hole 21, so that the lower part of the battery cell 1 can be immersed in the cooling medium, and the bus is set at the top of the battery cell 1, so that the battery cell 1 with a larger diameter can also have a good heat dissipation effect during normal charging and discharging.

[0030] Please refer to Figure 6, which is a schematic diagram of the cross-sectional structure of another liquid-cooled battery system provided in an embodiment of the present application. In some embodiments of the present application, the housing 2 has two sidewalls arranged opposite to each other, and a plurality of through-holes 21 are respectively located on the two sidewalls, and a liquid-cooling cavity 22 is formed between the two sidewalls. The battery cell 1 passes through the through-holes 21 located on the two sidewalls in sequence. The battery cell 1 has a first end, a middle section, and a second end arranged in sequence. The two sidewalls of the housing 2 are located between the first end and the second end, and the middle section is immersed in the cooling medium of the liquid-cooling cavity 22.

[0031] In the embodiment of the present application, the box body 2 is configured as a box body with through holes 21 on both the top and bottom surfaces, and the battery cell 1 is inserted into the through hole 21, so that the middle portion of the battery cell 1 can be immersed in the cooling medium. The busbar is arranged on the top and bottom surfaces of the battery cell 1, so that the battery cell 1 with a larger diameter can also have a good heat dissipation effect during normal charging and discharging.

[0032] In some embodiments of the present application, please refer to Figure 5, which is an enlarged structural diagram of part A of another liquid-cooled battery system provided in an embodiment of the present application. The position of part A can be referred to Figure 3. The liquid-cooled battery system also includes a glue potting layer 25, which is disposed on the surface of the box body 1 having the through hole 21, and is used to form a sealing structure between the battery cell 1 and the through hole 21 to seal the gap between the battery cell 1 and the through hole 21.

[0033] It should be understood that the glue filling layer 25 can be used to fill the entire top surface of the box body 2 or only the top surface of the box body 2 near the through hole 21, as long as the through hole 21 is sealed.

[0034] In the embodiment of the present application, a glue potting layer 25 is provided to ensure the sealing of the through hole 21 and prevent the cooling medium from overflowing from the through hole 21 .

[0035] Please refer to FIG. 4 and FIG. 5 . In some embodiments of the present application, the side surface of the battery cell 1 is wrapped with an insulating film 11 .

[0036] In the embodiment of the present application, by wrapping the insulating film 11 on the side of the battery cell 1, leakage between the surface of the battery cell 1 and the cooling medium is less likely to occur, thereby enabling the entire battery system to operate more safely and stably.

[0037] Please refer to FIG. 5 . In some embodiments of the present application, a sealing ring 211 is provided between the through hole 21 and the battery cell 1 .

[0038] In the embodiment of the present application, a sealing ring 211 is provided between the through hole 21 and the battery cell 1 , so that the gap between the through hole 21 and the battery cell 1 is sealed during the glue filling process, and glue is not likely to overflow and penetrate into the liquid cooling cavity 22 during glue filling due to the sealing effect of the sealing ring 211 .

[0039] Please refer to Figures 5 and 7. Figure 7 is a structural schematic diagram of the sealing ring provided in an embodiment of the present application. The figure shows that multiple sealing rings 211 are connected in sequence as an integrated structure, and the top edge of the sealing ring 211 is bent outward to fit the top end face of the through hole 21.

[0040] In the embodiment of the present application, a sealing ring 211 is sleeved inside the through hole 21, multiple sealing rings 211 are set as an integrated structure, and the top of the sealing ring 211 is bent outward, so that the multiple sealing rings 211 can be easily installed in the multiple through holes 21 as a whole, and can just fit the inner wall aperture of the through hole 21. In addition, during the process of glue pouring above or below the through hole 21, glue can be prevented from overflowing through the through hole 21 into the liquid cooling cavity 22, thereby optimizing the installation process.

[0041] Please refer to Figures 2 and 3. Figure 2 is an exploded schematic diagram of a liquid-cooled battery system provided in an embodiment of the present application, and Figure 3 is a cross-sectional schematic diagram of a longitudinal section of a liquid-cooled battery system provided in an embodiment of the present application. In some embodiments of the present application, the liquid-cooled battery system includes a plurality of boxes 2, a first side beam 3, and a second side beam 4. The first side beam 3 is mounted on one end of the plurality of boxes 2, and the second side beam 4 is mounted on the other end of the plurality of boxes 2. An integrated inflow pipe 31 is provided inside the first side beam 3, and the integrated inflow pipe 31 is connected to a plurality of liquid inlets 23. An integrated outflow pipe 41 is provided inside the second side beam 4, and the integrated outflow pipe 41 is connected to a plurality of liquid discharge ports 24.

[0042] It should be understood that multiple boxes 2 can be expanded along the same plane or stacked along a vertical plane to achieve expansion. Accordingly, the first side beam 3 can be provided with multiple rows of ports integrated with the inflow pipes 31, and the second side beam 4 can be provided with multiple rows of ports integrated with the outflow pipes 41 to achieve expansion of the multiple boxes 2 along the vertical plane.

[0043] In the embodiment of the present application, the liquid-cooled battery system is configured to be composed of a first side beam 3, a second side beam 4 and a plurality of boxes 2, the integrated inflow pipe 31 is arranged in the first side beam 3, and the integrated outflow pipe 41 is arranged in the second side beam 4, so that the entire battery system can be freely combined with an unlimited number of boxes 2 and the first side beam 3 and the second side beam 4 by cutting the length of the first side beam 3 and the second side beam 4, thereby facilitating the subsequent expansion of the box 2.

[0044] In some embodiments of the present application, a first interface seal is connected between the liquid inlet 23 and the integrated inflow pipe 31 , and a second interface seal is connected between the liquid outlet 24 and the integrated outflow pipe 41 .

[0045] It should be noted that the first interface seal can be a sealing gasket sandwiched between the liquid inlet 23 and the first side beam 3, or a rubber layer arranged on the inner side of the first side beam 3; it can also be a sealing ring between the liquid inlet 23 and the integrated inflow pipe 31; the second interface seal can be a sealing gasket sandwiched between the liquid discharge port 24 and the second side beam 4, or a rubber layer arranged on the inner side of the second side beam 4, or a sealing ring between the liquid discharge port 24 and the integrated outflow pipe 41.

[0046] The embodiment of the present application provides a first interface seal between the liquid inlet 23 and the integrated inflow pipe 31, and provides a second interface seal between the liquid outlet 24 and the integrated outflow pipe 41, so that the connection between the integrated inflow pipe 31 and the liquid inlet 23, and the connection between the integrated outflow pipe 41 and the liquid outlet 24 are not prone to cooling medium leakage.

[0047] Please refer to FIG. 2 . In some embodiments of the present application, both end surfaces of the box body 2 are open, and both end surfaces of the box body 2 are respectively connected to the first side beam 3 and the second side beam 4 to form a liquid cooling cavity 22 .

[0048] The embodiment of the present application sets the box body 2 as a box body with openings at both ends, adds a first side beam 3 and a second side beam 4, so that the lengths of multiple boxes 2 and the lengths of the first side beam 3 and the second side beam 4 can be freely cut, and then the multiple boxes 2 are welded through the first side beam 3 and the second side beam 4 of the freely cut length, so that the liquid cooling module composed of multiple boxes 2 can be expanded along the length direction and width direction of the battery system.

[0049] Referring to Figure 5 , in some embodiments of the present application, the box body 2 is provided with reinforcing ribs 221. Specifically, the reinforcing ribs 221 are provided on the shell of the box body 2. Typically, the box body 2 includes a bottom wall, a top wall, and side walls, and sometimes also includes end walls at the ends of the box body 2. These bottom wall, top wall, side walls, and end walls constitute the shell of the box body 2.

[0050] In the embodiment of the present application, by providing reinforcing ribs 221 on the shell of the box body 2, it is possible to prevent the box body 2 from deforming when the battery cell 1 undergoes thermal expansion and explosion, or when the box body is collided, thereby improving the service life of the box body 2. In addition, the main body of the shell of the box body 2 can also be configured as a hollow structure for heat preservation of the cooling medium. As an example, referring to FIG5 , the end wall and the bottom wall of the box body 2 are both configured as hollow structures. For example, the hollow structure can also be filled with a filling material such as foam to achieve heat preservation of the liquid cooling cavity 22.

[0051] Please refer to Figure 3. In some embodiments of the present application, the inner sides of the first side beam 3 and the second side beam 4 are respectively provided with installation grooves along the length direction of the first side beam 3 or the second side beam 4, and the installation grooves are matched with the ends of the box body 2.

[0052] It should be understood that the mounting groove can be configured as a long groove or a slotted hole.

[0053] Mounting grooves are provided along the length direction on the inner sides of the first side beam 3 and the second side beam 4, and then the boxes 2 are welded one by one in the mounting grooves on the inner sides of the first side beam 3 and the second side beam 4. Since the height of the box 2 is adapted to the width of the mounting grooves, the following effects can be achieved: first, the ends of the box 2 can be positioned when welding the box 2, so that all the boxes 2 are located on the same horizontal plane after the box 2 is installed; second, since the connection strength between some boxes 2 and the first side beam 3 and the second side beam 4 after welding is insufficient, under the action of the upper and lower limit of the mounting grooves, as well as the action of the left and right limit of the box 2 when the adjacent box 2 is connected to the first side beam 3 and the second side beam 4, it is ensured that the box 2 is not easily separated from the first side beam 3 and the second side beam 4, thereby alleviating the problem of easy detachment of the box 2 from the first side beam 3 and the second side beam 4 when welded to a certain extent.

[0054] Please refer to Figure 2. In some embodiments of the present application, a first welded end plate 32 is provided on one end surface of the box body 2, and a second welded end plate 42 is provided on the other end surface of the box body 2 to form a liquid cooling cavity 22.

[0055] When the first side beam 3 is directly welded to the end of the box body 2 , there may be a failure in the sealing of the welding, resulting in welding leaks, which in turn leads to leakage of the cooling medium.

[0056] Therefore, after cutting the two ends of the box body 2, the two ends of the box body 2 can be welded to the first welding end plate 32 and the second welding end plate 42 to form a sealed structure. After checking the sealing of each box body 2, the box body 2 and the first side beam 3 and the second side beam 4 can be welded. This can ensure the sealing between the box body 2 and the first side beam 3 and the second side beam 4 after welding as much as possible. Compared with the method of directly setting the box body 2 as a sealed structure, this method can make the length of the box body 2 flexibly cut according to needs.

[0057] In some embodiments of the present application, the box body 2 is fixed to the first side beam 3 and the second side beam 4 by welding.

[0058] The embodiment of the present application fixes the box body 2 to the first side beam 3 and the second side beam 4 by welding, thereby ensuring the connection strength between the box body 2 and the first side beam 3 and the second side beam 4, thereby improving the service life of the entire battery system.

[0059] In the above embodiments, the description of each embodiment has its own focus. For parts that are not described in detail in a certain embodiment, please refer to the detailed description of other embodiments above and will not be repeated here.
