Description

FIBER LASERTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] This disclosure relates to the technical field of fiber lasers, in particular to a short cavity kilowatt fiber laser.BACKGROUND ART

[0002] At present, the efficiency of a high-power kilowatt NIR fiber laser is about 40%, and the efficiency mainly depends on the efficiencies of the pump source and the resonator. Concerning high efficiency of the resonator, it is generally desired that the resonator can achieve full pump absorption, which usually requires the resonator to have long active fiber length, either for forward-, backward-or a bidirectional cladding pumping architectures.

[0003] However, such long fiber may produce undesirable nonlinear effects in the laser system, such as Stimulated Raman Scattering (SRS) . In a fiber laser, the Raman scattered light stimulated by the SRS effect is transmitted bidirectionally along a length direction of the fiber. This will, for one thing, cause part of the power of the signal laser to be transferred to the Raman scattered light, resulting in power decrease of the signal laser, and, for another thing, the reflected Raman scattered light will damage fiber devices in the laser system, thus limiting further increase of the output optical power of the fiber laser. Moreover, the generation of Raman scattered light will deteriorate the output beam quality of the laser, thus affecting the application effect.

[0004] Conversely, if shorter active fibers are adopted to suppress the SRS effect, the high residual or unabsorbed pump power will be wasted, thus reducing the system efficiency and may even damage the system.

[0005] It thus can be seen that there is still plenty of room for improvement in the prior art in effectively improving the resonator efficiency.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0042] According to an exemplary embodiment of the disclosure, a central reflection wavelength of the pump light reflecting portion 22 is the wavelength of the pump light, which is 976 nm here. The pump light reflecting portion 22 may have a predetermined reflection bandwidth based on a range of the wavelength of the pump light ±15 nm, which is 961 nm to 991 nm  here. In another example, when the pump light has a wavelength of 915 nm, the predetermined reflection bandwidth may range from 900 nm to 930 nm. In addition, the predetermined reflection bandwidth may also be selected as 960 nm to 990 nm, or 900 nm to 990 nm as required, or a reflection bandwidth greater than 90 nm may also be selected as required. The pump light reflecting portion 22 has high reflection to light with wavelength within a predetermined reflection bandwidth, with reflectivity greater than 99% (R>99%) , more preferably greater than 99.5%. Moreover, the pump light reflecting portion 22 is anti-reflective or transmission-increasing to the signal light, or is anti-reflective or transmission-increasing to the light with wavelength ranging from 1030 nm to 1150 nm, with reflectivity preferably less than 1% (R<1%) . In addition, for Raman scattered light from the resonant cavity 1, the pump light reflecting portion 22 has a reflectivity less than 1%, so that the Raman scattered light is not reflected back to the resonant cavity 1 as far as possible. The pump light reflecting portion 22 has a high damage threshold for the pump light, such as 200MW / cm2. Preferably, the pump light reflecting portion 22 is adapted to process light of a total power density less than 40kW / cm2, namely, the pump light and the signal light here, as well as the Raman scattered light, if present. Preferably, the pump light reflecting unit 2 is also processed (for example, coated with a light-absorbing material) to be able to eliminate less than 1%of the pump light and less than 1%of the signal light as well as possible Raman scattered light that may leak out or penetrate from the pump light reflecting portion 22. For a 3kW fiber laser, the total power of these leaked lights generally does not exceed 50W.

[0043] According to the fiber laser 100 of the disclosure, the pump light from the pump source 3 and combined by the backward pump combiner 4 passes through the low-reflective Bragg grating 13, the gain fiber 12, and the high-reflective Bragg grating 11 in sequence to enter the resonant cavity 1 in a backward direction. At this point, the signal light generated by the absorption of the pump light by the gain fiber 12 is substantially reflected back to the resonant cavity 1 at the high-reflective Bragg grating 11 and is mostly transmitted out through the low-reflective Bragg grating 13 serving as an output end of the resonant cavity 1, while the unabsorbed residual pump light is output from the resonant cavity 1 to the pump light reflecting unit 2 through the high-reflective Bragg grating 11 and, after being reflected by the pump light reflecting portion 22 in the pump light reflecting unit 2, enters the resonant cavity 1 again (as shown by the double arrows in FIG. 1) , meaning that it passes through the high-reflective Bragg grating 11, the gain fiber 12 and the low-reflective Bragg grating 13 in sequence, thereby undergoing a doubled propagation length and thus being absorbed as fully as possible, even achieving full absorption. Meanwhile, the very tiny amount of signal light leaked at the high-reflective Bragg grating 11 and the possibly generated Raman scattered light will not be reflected by the pump light reflecting portion 22 but are released, thereby eliminating potential external cavity interference and suppressing the SRS effect.

[0044] With the fiber laser 100 according to the present disclosure, which allows the residual pump light that remains unabsorbed after a single propagation to be reflected back to the resonant cavity 1 through the pump light reflecting unit 2 in order to be propagated and absorbed for a second time, the transmission length of the pump power in the resonant cavity 1 can be doubled, and the absorption efficiency of the pump power can be increased compared with the conventional laser that transmits the pump power only once. Moreover, as the pump power can be transmitted twice, the length of the gain fiber can be appropriately shortened, for example, by about 30%, to obtain a short-cavity fiber laser, and as the pump power can be propagated twice in a short resonant cavity, the actual transmission path of the pump power in such a short-cavity fiber laser can still be increased, thus still obtaining higher absorption efficiency or even full absorption, as described above, which can avoid energy waste. Furthermore, by using a fully backward pumping architecture, the fiber laser 100 with a high absorptivity and a shorter cavity can further reduce the SRS effect. It has been proved through experiments that, compared with the various fiber lasers in the prior art, the fiber laser 100 according to the present disclosure has a notably improved linearity and requires less power compensation, and its electrical-optical conversion efficiency is also significantly improved. Furthermore, the manufacturing cost of the fiber laser 100 according to the disclosure is low.

[0045] While specific embodiments of the disclosure have been described in detail here, they have been presented only for the purpose of explanation and should not be construed as limitations on the scope of the disclosure. Various substitutions, changes and modifications can be devised without departing from the spirit and scope of the disclosure.
