Description

[0001] NETWORK NODES AND METHODS FOR HANDLING QUALITY OF SERVICE

[0002] PARAMETERS IN A WIRELESS COMMUNICATION NETWORK

[0003] TECHNICAL FIELD

[0004] Embodiments herein relate to network nodes and methods therein. In particular, they relate to handling quality of services (QoS) parameters in a wireless communication network.

[0005] BACKGROUND

[0006] In a typical wireless communication network, wireless devices, also known as wireless communication devices, mobile stations, user equipments (UE) etc., communicate via a Radio Access Network (RAN) to one or more core networks (CN). The RAN covers a geographical area which is divided into service areas or cell areas, which may also be referred to as a beam or a beam group, with each service area or cell area being served by a radio network node such as a radio access node e.g., a Wi-Fi access point or a radio base station (RBS), which in some networks may also be denoted, for example, a “NodeB” or “eNodeB” or “eNB” or “gNB”. A service area or cell area is a geographical area where radio coverage is provided by the radio network node. The radio network node communicates over an air interface operating on radio frequencies with the wireless communication device within a range of the radio network node.

[0007] A Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) is a third generation (3G) telecommunication network, which evolved from the second generation (2G) Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM). Specifications for the Evolved Packet System (EPS), also called a Fourth Generation (4G) network or Long Term Evolution (LTE) have been completed within the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) and this work continues in the coming 3GPP releases, for example to specify a Fifth Generation (5G) New Radio (NR) network, or Next Generation (NG) Radio Access Network (NG-RAN) and upcoming releases.

[0008] 3GPP is currently introducing standards support for Extended Reality (XR), including the addition of Packet Data Unit (PDU) Set Quality of Service (QoS) parameters information in the QoS profile. PDU Set QoS Parameters are defined in 3GPP TS 23.501 section 5.7.7.7, as parameters used to support PDU Set based QoS handling in the NG- RAN. At least one PDU Set QoS Parameter shall be sent to the NG-RAN to enable PDU Set based QoS handling. The following PDU Set QoS Parameters are specified:

[0009] 1) PDU Set Delay Budget (PSDB).

[0010] 2) PDU Set Error Rate (PSER).

[0011] 3) PDU Set Integrated Handling Information (PSI HI).

[0012] The Policy Control Function (PCF) determines the PDU Set QoS Parameters based on information provided by Application Function( AF) and / or local configuration. The PDU Set QoS parameters are sent to the Session Management Function (SMF) as part of Policy and Charging Control (PCC) rule. The SMF sends them to NG-RAN as part of the QoS Profile.

[0013] If the NG-RAN receives PDU Set QoS Parameters and supports them, it enables the PDU Set based QoS handling and applies PDU Set QoS Parameters as described in this clause.

[0014] In NG-RAN specification, the PDU Set QoS parameters have currently been defined as follows in NG Application Protocol (NGAP) baseline change Request (CR):

[0015] 9.3.1.x PDU Set QoS Parameters

[0016] This IE defines the PDU Set QoS Parameters to be applied to a QoS flow.

[0017] To support PDU Set based QoS handling, the PDU Session Anchor (PSA) User Plane Function (UPF) identifies PDUs that belong to PDU Sets and determines the below PDU Set Information which it sends to the NG-RAN in the GTP-U header, i.e. General Packet Radio Service Tunnelling Protocol User Plane (GTP-U). The PDU Set information is used by the NG-RAN for PDU Set based QoS handling as described above.

[0018] The PDU Set Information comprises:

[0019] - PDU Set Sequence Number.

[0020] - Indication of End PDU of the PDU Set.

[0021] - PDU Sequence Number within a PDU Set.

[0022] - PDU Set Size in bytes. - PDU Set Importance, which identifies the relative importance of a PDU Set compared to other PDU Sets within a QoS Flow.

[0023] The NG-RAN may use the Priority Level, see clause 5.7.3.3 of TS 23.501 , across QoS Flows and PDU Set Importance within a QoS Flow for PDU Set level packet discarding in presence of congestion.

[0024] NOTE 1 : In addition to considering the PDU Set Importance within a QoS Flow, NG- RAN could also consider the relative PDU Set Importance across QoS Flows of the same Priority Level when determining which PDU Set needs to be discarded, which is up to implementation and configuration of operator.

[0025] NOTE 2: The PDU Set Information can be different for different PDU Sets within a QoS Flow.

[0026] The SMF instructs PSA UPF to perform PDU Set marking and may provide the PSA UPF the Protocol Description indicating the header, extension header e.g. Real-time Transport Protocol and Secure RTP (RTP / SRTP) and payload type e.g. H.264, used by the service data flow. The Protocol Description may be received in the PCC rule, based on information provided by the AF or by PCF local policies as described in clause 5.37.5.1 of TS 23.501.

[0027] PSA UPF can identify the PDU Set Information using the Protocol Description and the received RTP / SRTP headers or using implementation specific means. The details of the RTP / SRTP headers, header extensions and / or payloads used to identify PDU Set Information are defined in TS 26.522.

[0028] For each downlink (DL) PDU received on N6 interface for which PDU Set based QoS handling is indicated from the SMF, the PSA UPF applies the rules for PDU Set identification and provides PDU Set Information which is available to the RAN in the GTP- U header.

[0029] SUMMARY

[0030] As part of developing embodiments herein problems were identified and will first be discussed.

[0031] In 3GPP TS 23.501 , there is an Editor’s note stipulating that:

[0032] - the applicability and details of supporting PDU Set handling in uplink direction is an open question

[0033] Currently, the specification does not define separate restriction for PDU Set QoS parameters e.g., PSDB for uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) traffic, hence RAN cannot guess the direction UL and DL of the parameters. In fact, to be more precise, it is not clear whether NG-RAN should utilize some resource capacity to search for PDU set Information in the GTP-ll header for DL traffic or that some consideration is to be taken for the UE. In case the source of the ‘PDU Sets’ is from the UE, some indication is needed to let NG-RAN understand that it can configure access stratum specific functionality, e.g., UE discarding of outdated or less important PDU Sets, in the UE.

[0034] Embodiments herein provides methods for signalling the applicability of PDU Set QoS parameters in the uplink direction.

[0035] NG-RAN is aware whether the PDU Set Info comes in DL or related functionality can be configured in UL, e.g., in the UE, or in both.

[0036] According to embodiments herein, several options for indicating the traffic flow e.g., uplink direction, applicability of the PDU Set QoS parameters signalled in NG-RAN, including all interfaces, e.g. NGAP, XnAP, F1AP, and E1AP, are described: a) A new indication indicating which flow direction, e.g. uplink or downlink, for the signaled PDU Set QoS parameters their usage applicable for. b) Including a new indication for each of the PSDB uplink and PSER uplink. c) Defining a new PDU Set QoS parameters for uplink. d) Redefining the “QoS Flow Level QoS Parameters IE” to include two “PDU Set QoS Parameters” lEs, one for downlink and another for uplink.

[0037] According to one aspect of the embodiments herein, the object is achieved by a first network node and method therein for handling quality of service (QoS) parameters in a wireless communication network. The first network node receives an indication indicating traffic flow direction applicability of the QoS parameters from a second network node or a User Equipment (UE), and performs certain actions based on the traffic flow direction applicability of the QoS parameters.

[0038] According to one aspect of the embodiments herein, the object is achieved by a second network node and method therein for handling quality of service (QoS) parameters in a wireless communication network. The second network node sends an indication indicating traffic flow direction applicability of the QoS parameters to a first network node. According to one aspect of the embodiments herein, the object is achieved by a UE and method therein for handling quality of service (QoS) parameters in a wireless communication network. The UE sends an indication indicating traffic flow direction applicability of the QoS parameters to a first network node.

[0039] Embodiments herein ensure that NG-RAN is aware of the uplink PDU Set QoS parameters, which it can use for scheduling UL resources when different UL grants are being allocated for the UE.

[0040] Embodiments herein ensure that NG-RAN can differentiate the cases where PDU Set Information is to be searched for in the DL NG-U traffic and or whether PDU Set Information will be available in the UE on the UL and therefore the necessary UE configuration can be enabled.

[0097] With reference to Figure 8, in accordance with an embodiment, a communication system includes a telecommunication network 3210, such as a 3GPP- type cellular network, which comprises an access network 3211, such as a radio access network, and a core network 3214. The access network 3211 comprises a plurality of base stations 3212a, 3212b, 3212c, such as NBs, eNBs, gNBs or other types of wireless access points being examples of the radio network node 12 herein, each defining a corresponding coverage area 3213a, 3213b, 3213c. Each base station 3212a, 3212b, 3212c is connectable to the core network 3214 over a wired or wireless connection 3215. A first user equipment (UE) 3291 , being an example of the UE 230, located in coverage area 3213c is configured to wirelessly connect to, or be paged by, the corresponding base station 3212c. A second UE 3292 in coverage area 3213a is wirelessly connectable to the corresponding base station 3212a. While a plurality of UEs 3291 , 3292 are illustrated in this example, the disclosed embodiments are equally applicable to a situation where a sole UE is in the coverage area or where a sole UE is connecting to the corresponding base station 3212.

[0098] The telecommunication network 3210 is itself connected to a host computer 3230, which may be embodied in the hardware and / or software of a standalone server, a cloud-implemented server, a distributed server or as processing resources in a server farm. The host computer 3230 may be under the ownership or control of a service provider, or may be operated by the service provider or on behalf of the service provider. The connections 3221, 3222 between the telecommunication network 3210 and the host computer 3230 may extend directly from the core network 3214 to the host computer 3230 or may go via an optional intermediate network 3220. The intermediate network 3220 may be one of, or a combination of more than one of, a public, private or hosted network; the intermediate network 3220, if any, may be a backbone network or the Internet; in particular, the intermediate network 3220 may comprise two or more sub-networks (not shown).

[0099] The communication system of Figure 8 as a whole enables connectivity between one of the connected UEs 3291, 3292 and the host computer 3230. The connectivity may be described as an over-the-top (OTT) connection 3250. The host computer 3230 and the connected UEs 3291 , 3292 are configured to communicate data and / or signaling via the OTT connection 3250, using the access network 3211 , the core network 3214, any intermediate network 3220 and possible further infrastructure (not shown) as intermediaries. The OTT connection 3250 may be transparent in the sense that the participating communication devices through which the OTT connection 3250 passes are unaware of routing of uplink and downlink communications. For example, a base station 3212 may not or need not be informed about the past routing of an incoming downlink communication with data originating from a host computer 3230 to be forwarded (e.g., handed over) to a connected UE 3291. Similarly, the base station 3212 need not be aware of the future routing of an outgoing uplink communication originating from the UE 3291 towards the host computer 3230.

[0100] Example implementations, in accordance with an embodiment, of the UE, base station and host computer discussed in the preceding paragraphs will now be described with reference to Figure 9. In a communication system 3300, a host computer 3310 comprises hardware 3315 including a communication interface 3316 configured to set up and maintain a wired or wireless connection with an interface of a different communication device of the communication system 3300.
