[0005] FIGS. 2A-2E depict aspects of an example hinge assembly usable with the foldable computing device of FIG. 1.

[0006] FIGS. 3A-3C depicts folding of an example hinge assembly from an unfolded state to a folded state.

[0007] FIG. 4 depicts aspects of another example hinge assembly usable with the foldable computing device of FIG. 1.DETAILED DESCRIPTION

[0008] Some computing devices include two portions connected by a hinge that allows the computing device to be reconfigured between a folded configuration and an unfolded configuration. The folded configuration may provide for compact storage and carrying of the computing device, while the unfolded configuration may reveal a display that spans the two portions of the computing device. Some foldable computing devices include separate displays on first and second device portions. However, in such devices, a seam between the two displays may disrupt a continuity of a displayed image that spans the two device portions.

[0009] Thus, other foldable computing devices may utilize a single flexible display, such as a flexible organic light emitting diode (OLED) display, that spans the two device portions. Use of a single display that spans a hinge of a foldable computing device may help to avoid the appearance of a seam that interrupts the continuity of an image or other graphical content displayed across the device portions. However, incorporating a foldable display into a computing device may pose challenges.

[0010] As one example, repeated folding of a display (e.g., an OLED display) over time may damage the display if the display bends too sharply at the hinge when folded. On the other hand, providing sufficient space to accommodate a less sharp bend  in the display may result in a thicker device profile that is less convenient to transport or store, particularly for mobile computing devices. Also, if a computing device hinge fails to provide suitably flat and / or supportive backing for a flexible display at any portion of the hinge or over any portion of the display, a user may notice visual wrinkles in the display surface and inconsistency in mechanical support for the display, for example, when making touch inputs.

[0011] Accordingly, in view of such challenges, examples are disclosed that relate to a hinge assembly used to rotatably couple two portions of a foldable computing device. The hinge assembly includes at least one virtual pivot link connecting a hinge spine to a hinge attachment frame, where the hinge attachment frame is attached to one portion (e.g., a “first portion” ) of a foldable computing device. In some examples, the other portion (e.g., “second portion” ) of the foldable computing device is attached to a second hinge attachment frame, which is similarly connected to the hinge spine via a corresponding second virtual pivot link. In some examples, the hinge spine, hinge attachment frame, and virtual pivot, in tandem with a hinge guide also connected to the hinge spine and hinge attachment frame, form the four bars of a four-bar linkage. Use of virtual pivot links in the assemblies described herein can beneficially reduce strain on the flexible display by controlling the profile adopted by the flexible display during folding –e.g., to achieve a desired “teardrop” profile.

[0012] Additionally, the hinge assemblies disclosed herein include a display support that is slidably attached to the virtual pivot link, such that the display support moves relative to the hinge attachment frame and the virtual pivot link during folding or unfolding of the device. In some examples, a flexible display of the foldable computing device is coupled with the display support. In this manner, the sliding movement of the display support may beneficially provide the flexible display with  additional kinematic freedom during folding or unfolding of the device, which can reduce strain on the display and improve longevity. Additionally, or alternatively, the designs described herein may serve to improve the flatness of the flexible display while the foldable display device is in an unfolded state –e.g., reducing the appearance of any crease or fold in the display in the vicinity of the hinge.

[0013] FIG. 1 shows an example foldable computing device 100. Computing device 100 includes a first portion 102 and a second portion 104 connected at a hinge 106. A flexible display 108 spans first portion 102, second portion 104, and hinge 106. Hinge 106 enables first portion 102 to be rotated relative to second portion 104 to provide a variety of different postures for the computing device. The flexibility of display 108 allows display 108 to bend to adapt to a relative angle of first portion 102 to second portion 104.

[0014] Computing device 100 may take any suitable form. Examples of computing device 100 include hand-held and / or mobile devices, such as a foldable smart phone and a foldable tablet computer. Display 108 may comprise any suitable type of flexible display. In some examples, display 108 comprises a flexible OLED display. In some examples, display 108 may include an integrated touch sensor to sense touch inputs, such as one or more digits of a user and / or a stylus.

[0015] The present disclosure primarily focuses on scenarios where the foldable computing device includes a display that extends between two portions of the device and spans a hinge that rotatably couples the two portions. However, it will be understood that this is non-limiting. In other embodiments, the hinge assemblies described herein may be used with foldable computing devices that do not include a display spanning the hinge. For instance, a hinge assembly as described herein may be used with a foldable computing device in which a display is integrated into a first  portion of the device and a keyboard (and / or other suitable input system) is integrated into a second portion of the device. Additionally, or alternatively, a foldable computing device may include separate displays that are integrated into the first and second portions but do not span the hinge.

[0016] FIGS. 2A-2E provide different views of an example hinge assembly 200 usable to facilitate rotational movement of one portion of a foldable computing device relative to another. In other words, the hinge assembly may be used to rotatably couple a first portion of a foldable computing device to a second portion of the foldable computing device. For instance, hinge assembly 200 may be used to implement hinge 106 of foldable computing device 100 schematically depicted in FIG. 1.

[0017] It will be understood that the specific size, shape, and appearance of the components depicted in FIGS. 2A-2E, as well as FIGS. 3A-C and 4 described below, are non-limiting examples. Furthermore, it will be understood that the components described herein may be constructed from any suitable materials depending on the implementation, and depending on various design considerations (e.g., weight, durability, cost, thermal properties) . As non-limiting examples, any or all of the components of hinge assembly 200 and the other hinge assemblies described herein may be constructed from suitable metals, plastics, ceramics, carbon fiber materials, and / or other suitable materials. Furthermore, any or all of the individual components of the hinge assemblies described herein may in some cases be themselves constructed from two or more subcomponents attached together.

[0018] As shown, hinge assembly 200 includes a hinge spine 202. The hinge spine is generally described herein as a substantially rigid structure to which both the first and second portions of the foldable computing device are movably attached via components of the hinge assembly, enabling the two portions to rotate about the hinge  spine between folded and unfolded configurations of the foldable computing device. It will be understood that the specific appearance of hinge spine 202 in FIG. 2A (such as the illustrated placement of screws and fasteners) is non-limiting.

[0019] The hinge spine is attached to a hinge attachment frame 204A via a virtual pivot link 206A-1. Similarly, in this example, the hinge spine is attached to a second hinge attachment frame via a second virtual pivot link 206B-1. In other words, in the embodiment illustrated in FIGS. 2A-E, the hinge assembly includes two symmetrical halves –e.g., a first side of the hinge spine is attached to a first hinge attachment frame using one or more first-side connecting links (e.g., one or more virtual pivot links and / or hinge guides, as will be described below) , while a second side of the hinge spine is attached to a second hinge attachment frame using one or more second-side connecting links. The first-and second-side connecting links are arranged symmetrically relative to a long axis of the hinge spine. However, it will be understood that this is non-limiting. Rather, in other examples, the components of the hinge assembly used to attach one side of the hinge spine to a hinge attachment frame may be non-symmetrical to the components of the hinge assembly used to attach the second side of the hinge spine to a second hinge attachment frame –e.g., the hinge assembly may include different numbers, combinations, and / or placements of connecting links on the two sides of the hinge spine.

[0020] As discussed above, the hinge assemblies described herein include a hinge attachment frame attached to a first portion of a foldable computing device. This will now be briefly described with respect to FIG. 2B. In FIG. 2B, hinge attachment frame 204A is depicted as being attached to a simplified representation of a first portion 214A of a foldable computing device. In this example, the hinge assembly additionally  includes a second hinge attachment frame 204B attached to a simplified representation of a second portion 214B of the foldable computing device.

[0021] It will be understood that the first and second portions 214A and 214B shown in FIG. 2B are intended to generically represent any suitable housings, frames, brackets, or other structures of a foldable computing device. As such, the specific sizes, shapes, and dimensions of the first and second portions 214A and 214B shown in FIG. 2B are non-limiting. For instance, the first and second portions may take the form of first and second display housings that enclose and support portions of a flexible display, and house various other suitable components of the foldable computing device, such as batteries, printed circuit boards (PCBs) , computer logic hardware, computer storage hardware, etc. The hinge attachment frames may be affixed to the first and second device portions in any suitable way –e.g., via welding, chemical adhesives, suitable fasteners (such as bolts, screws, rivets) , and / or interlocking components.

[0022] FIG. 2B additionally shows a representation of a flexible display layer 216, which is depicted as being transparent, such that aspects of hinge assembly 200 are visible through the display layer. It will be understood that, in various examples, the display layer may be transparent, opaque, or have another suitable appearance. The flexible display layer takes any suitable form and uses any suitable image-forming technology. For instance, in some examples, the flexible display layer is an OLED display, as discussed above. In the example of FIG. 2B, the flexible display layer extends between the first portion 214A and the second portion 214B of the foldable computing device and spans the hinge assembly 200. In this manner, the flexible display layer bends during the movement of the first portion of the foldable computing device relative to the second portion, as will be described in more detail below with respect to FIGS. 3A-C.

[0023] Returning to FIG. 2A, as indicated above, the hinge spine and hinge attachment frame 204A are connected via a virtual pivot link. More particularly, a virtual pivot link 206A-1 connects hinge attachment frame 204A to the hinge spine 202, and the virtual pivot link is movably coupled to the hinge spine via a virtual pivot. As will be described in more detail below, in some examples, the virtual pivot link includes curved rails that occupy corresponding curved tracks within the hinge spine, thereby controlling and constraining rotation of the virtual pivot link relative to the hinge spine. In some examples, the virtual pivot link is connected to the hinge attachment frame via a pin joint that enables rotation of the virtual pivot link relative to the hinge attachment frame. In general, however, a virtual pivot link may be attached to the hinge spine and hinge attachment frame in any suitable way.

[0024] Furthermore, hinge assembly 200 includes a second virtual pivot link 206B-2 connecting second hinge attachment frame 204B to hinge spine 202, where the second virtual pivot link is also movably coupled to the hinge spine via a virtual pivot. In this example, hinge assembly 200 includes additional virtual pivot links 206A-2 and 206A-3 connecting hinge spine 202 to hinge attachment frame 204A. Similar virtual pivot links 206B-2 and 206B-3 connect the hinge spine to hinge attachment frame 204B. It will be understood that any suitable number of such virtual pivot links may be included on each side of the hinge assembly, and such virtual pivot links may be disposed symmetrically or non-symmetrically relative to a long axis of the hinge spine.

[0025] As used herein, a “virtual pivot” refers to a joint used to connect two components using curved tracks as opposed to a fully cylindrical pin interface. The curved tracks of virtual pivot links 206A-1 and 206B-1 will be described in more detail below with respect to FIG. 2E. This arrangement beneficially allows for the axis of  rotation to lie outside of each component connected by the joint, which is not possible with a typical pin joint.

[0026] Hinge assembly 200 additionally includes a display support 208A slidably attached to the virtual pivot link 206A-1. This attachment enables movement of the display support relative to the hinge attachment frame and the virtual pivot link during movement of the first portion relative to the second portion. Similarly, in this example, a second display support 208B is slidably attached to second virtual pivot link 206B-1, and moves relative to the second hinge attachment frame and the second virtual pivot link.

[0027] In some examples, there is no direct physical attachment (e.g., via adhesives, fasteners, or welding) between the display support and the hinge attachment frame. However, as will be described in more detail below, both the display support and hinge attachment frame are in some examples physically attached to a living hinge, which serves as an intermediary attachment between the display support and hinge attachment frame, and constrains movements of the display support relative to the hinge attachment frame. Additionally, or alternatively, movement of the display support may be constrained by a cam surface of the display support that occupies a complementary groove in the hinge attachment frame (or vice versa –in some examples the hinge attachment frame includes a cam surface that occupies a groove in the display support) . In FIG. 2A, display support 208A includes a cam surface 216A that occupies a groove within hinge attachment frame 204A. Similarly, second display support 208B contacts second hinge attachment frame 204B at a cam surface 216B.

[0028] Similarly, in some examples, there is no direct physical attachment between the display support and virtual pivot link. Rather, while the virtual pivot link may occupy a groove, notch, or other opening in the display support, the virtual pivot  link and display support may have at least some freedom to move independently from one another, as constrained by the hinge attachment frame and hinge spine.

[0029] In some examples, the display support defines a planar support surface, and a flexible display layer of the foldable computing device is coupled with the planar support surface. In FIG. 2A, display support 208A defines a planar support surface 209A, while display support 208B defines a planar support surface 209B. Thus, a flexible display layer (such as display layer 216 shown in FIG. 2B) may be coupled with the planar support surfaces, such that the flexible display layer and display supports move together during folding or unfolding of the foldable computing device. This beneficially improves the kinematic freedom of the flexible display, which can mitigate buckling or creasing of the display and improve longevity of the display. It will be understood that the flexible display layer may be “coupled with” planar support surfaces of the hinge assembly without directly contacting the planar support surfaces. Rather, as will be described in more detail below, in some embodiments there are one or more additional layers disposed between the planar support surfaces and the flexible display, such as a living hinge and / or flexible metal cover.

[0030] For instance, FIG. 2C again shows hinge assembly 200. However, in this example, the hinge assembly includes living hinges 212A and 212B covering portions of display supports 208A and 208B. In other words, in some examples, the hinge assembly includes a living hinge attached to the display support and the hinge attachment frame. In this manner, the living hinge may constrain movement of the display support relative to the hinge attachment frame. Use of a living hinge may beneficially provide support to the display support –e.g., as will be described in more detail below, physical force applied to the flexible display may be resisted by the display support. The force applied to the display support may be at least partially  transferred to the hinge attachment frame via the living hinge, which can beneficially reduce any noticeable deformation or buckling in the flexible display layer when force is applied. The living hinge may be attached to the display support and hinge attachment frame in any suitable way –e.g., via suitable fasteners, adhesives, and / or welding.

[0031] In general, a display support provides support for a flexible display layer of the foldable computing device for at least some hinge angles between the first and second portions of the device. For instance, while the device is in an unfolded state where the flexible display layer is substantially flat, the display supports may provide resistance to physical force applied to the flexible display layer, such as touch input provided by a human user. In some examples, the display supports similarly provide resistance to physical force applied to the flexible display for other hinge angles between the first and second portions of the device –e.g., in some examples, such support is provided for substantially all hinge angles between the folded and unfolded configurations of the foldable computing device. This can beneficially reduce strain on the flexible display layer by reducing or preventing any deformation in the display caused when physical force is applied to the display during folding or unfolding of the device.

[0032] It will be understood that, when the display supports do resist a physical force applied to the flexible display, such force may be transferred to any other suitable components of the hinge assembly. For instance, in examples where the display support and hinge attachment frame are each attached to a living hinge, then physical force applied to the flexible display layer may be at least partially transferred to the hinge attachment frame via the living hinge. Additionally, or alternatively, in some examples, the virtual pivot link of the hinge assembly supports the display support and provides  resistance when physical force is applied to the flexible display layer. The virtual pivot link may itself be supported by the hinge spine and / or hinge attachment frame.

[0033] As is shown in both FIGS. 2A and 2C, hinge assembly 200 additionally includes a hinge guide 210A-1 that is movably attached to hinge spine 202 and movably attached to the hinge attachment frame 204A. Similarly, a second hinge guide 210A-2 is movably connected to hinge spine 202 and the second hinge attachment frame 204B. In the specific example of FIG. 2, hinge assembly 200 also includes additional hinge guides 210A-2, 210A-3, and 210A-4 extending between the hinge spine and hinge attachment frame 204A. Similarly, hinge guides 210B-2, 210B-3, and 210B-4 extend between the hinge spine and the second hinge attachment frame 204B. It will be understood that this is non-limiting and, when included, any suitable number and arrangement of hinge guides may be used. As with the virtual pivot links, the hinge guides may be attached to the hinge spine and hinge attachment frames in any suitable way –e.g., in any suitable manner that enables controlled movement of the hinge spine and hinge attachment frame relative to one another.

[0034] Hinge guides are shown in more detail with respect to FIG. 2D, again showing aspects of hinge assembly 200. In this example, the display supports are omitted to reveal portions of the hinge attachment frames 204A / B and hinge guides 210A-1, 210A-2, 210B-1, and 210B-2 that are occluded by the display supports in FIG. 2A. As shown, both the virtual pivot links and the hinge guides extend between the hinge spine and each hinge attachment frame. In some examples, the hinge spine, hinge attachment frame, virtual pivot link, and hinge guide collectively comprise a four-bar linkage that guides and constrains movement of the hinge attachment frame (and therefore the first portion of the foldable computing device) relative to the hinge spine.

[0035] As discussed above with respect to FIG. 2A, display support 208A interfaces with hinge attachment frame 204A via a cam surface 216A that occupies a corresponding groove within the hinge attachment frame. In FIG. 2D, the display support is omitted, and thus the cam surface’s corresponding groove in the hinge attachment frame is unoccupied. This reveals the interface between virtual pivot link 206A-1 and hinge attachment frame 204A. Similar to the display support, the virtual pivot link 206A-1 includes a cam surface 218A that interfaces with a complementary groove in the hinge attachment frame, which constrains movement of the virtual pivot link relative to the hinge attachment frame. In some examples, a pin joint is used to physically attach the virtual pivot link to the hinge attachment frame.

[0036] Notably, in the example depicted in FIG. 2D, the two grooves in the hinge attachment frame corresponding to the cam surfaces of the virtual pivot link and display support are not concentric with one another. In other words, each of the virtual pivot link and display support have some freedom to rotate relative to the hinge attachment frame about different respective rotational axes, as defined by the interactions between each respective cam surface and its corresponding groove in the hinge attachment frame. These rotational axes are parallel but offset from one another. This offset contributes to a difference in movement between the display support and virtual pivot link during folding or unfolding of the foldable computing device, thereby causing relative sliding motion between the virtual pivot link and the display support.

[0037] Use of a hinge assembly to facilitate folding of a foldable computing device is illustrated with respect to FIGS. 3A-3C. Specifically, FIG. 3A shows aspects of another example hinge assembly 300 that may be used to rotatably couple two portions of a foldable computing device. Hinge assembly 300 is shown in profile view where a long axis of the hinge assembly (e.g., the Y axis as labeled in FIGS. 2A-E and  3A-C) is perpendicular to the plane of the page. Similar to hinge assembly 200, hinge assembly 300 includes a hinge spine 302. Hinge assembly 300 additionally includes hinge attachment frames 304A and 304B. Virtual pivot links 306A and 306B are partially visible in FIG. 3A, extending between the hinge spine 302 and the hinge attachment frames 304A / B, although are mostly occluded by display supports 308A and 308B.

[0038] FIG. 3A additionally shows a flexible display layer 310 that spans hinge assembly 300. For the sake of visual clarity, a small amount of space is shown between the flexible display layer and other components depicted in FIG. 3A. However, as discussed above, the flexible display layer is in some cases physically attached to components of the hinge assembly to thereby couple the flexible display with the display supports, causing the flexible display and hinge supports to move together during folding or unfolding of the device.

[0039] Furthermore, as discussed above, one or more intermediary layers are in some cases disposed between the flexible display and the display supports. This is illustrated with respect to FIG. 3A, in which a flexible metal layer 312 is disposed between the display support 304A and the flexible display layer 310. As one example, the flexible metal layer takes the form of a sheet metal cover that can be used to bridge internal gaps within the foldable computing device. In some examples, the flexible metal layer includes a perforated section proximal to the hinge spine to facilitate stretching of the flexible metal layer during the movement of the first portion of the device relative to the second portion. This is also illustrated in FIG. 3A, where flexible metal layer 312 includes a perforated section 314 proximal to hinge spine 302. Any suitable degree of perforation may be used depending on the implementation –e.g., to balance flexibility of the flexible metal layer against durability. Use of a flexible metal  layer can improve the flatness uniformity of the flexible display by providing additional support and force distribution when physical forces are applied to the display.

[0040] As discussed above, the flexible metal layer, display supports, and any intermediary layers may be physically attached to one another in any suitable way. In one example implementation, the flexible metal layer is physically welded to the display support (or a living hinge attached to the display support) and bonded to the flexible display layer using a suitable adhesive. In the example of FIG. 3A, the flexible metal layer 312 is bonded to the display supports 308A and 308B via bonding layers 316A and 316B, which may take the form of suitable adhesives or welded metal layers, as examples.

[0041] Folding of the hinge assembly is illustrated with respect to FIGS. 3A-3C. In the example of FIG. 3A, the hinge assembly is in an unfolded state, where the flexible display layer is substantially flat. By contrast, in FIG. 3B, the hinge assembly has been partially folded, such that portions of the flexible display layer distal from the hinge spine are offset by approximately 90 degrees. Notably, from this perspective, the virtual pivot links 306A / B and display supports 308A / B have moved relative to one another during the folding motion of the hinge assembly. As a result, relatively more of the virtual pivot links 306A and 306B are visible as compared to the view shown in FIG. 3A. This has revealed curved rails 318A and 318B of the virtual pivot links, which interface with corresponding tracks within the hinge spine 302 to control and guide rotation of the virtual pivot links relative to the hinge spine.

[0042] FIG. 3C again shows hinge assembly 300, in a scenario where the folding motion has continued, thereby resulting in a smaller degree of angular separation between the different faces of the flexible display layer on different sides of the hinge spine. As shown, the distance between different faces of the flexible display  layer decreases as the display layer extends away from a folding axis 320 of the hinge assembly. As a result, in this folded configuration, the flexible display assumes a “teardrop” configuration that can beneficially reduce strain on the flexible display by preventing formation of sharp bends or creases, thereby improving display longevity.

[0043] It will be understood that the three different configurations depicted in FIGS. 3A-C are non-limiting. In general, a hinge assembly as described herein may have any suitable range of motion, thereby enabling any suitable degree of angular separation between a first portion and a second portion of a foldable computing device.

[0044] As discussed above, in the illustrated embodiment, the display supports and virtual pivot links exhibit sliding motion relative to one another during the folding motion –e.g., relative more of the virtual pivot links become visible as the hinge assembly folds, due to sliding of the display supports. Additionally, or alternatively, contact between a virtual pivot link and a display support may cause movement of the display support in a direction away from the folding axis of the hinge assembly during the movement of the first portion of the foldable computing device relative to the second portion. This can beneficially shape the flexible display layer into a desired profile (such as a “teardrop” ) profile that reduces strain on the display, and reduces or prevents any uncontrolled buckling of the display toward the folding axis of the device.

[0045] This is also illustrated with respect to FIGS. 3A-C. Specifically, each of FIGS. 3A-3C include a distance indicator 322 that extends from a tip of hinge attachment frame 304A toward flexible display layer 310. This is used to illustrate the movement of display support 308 during folding of the hinge assembly. Specifically, in FIG. 3A, the distance indicator extends from hinge attachment frame 304A and ends at display support 308A. In FIG. 3B, folding of the hinge assembly has caused movement of display support 308A away from the folding axis, resulting in a smaller  gap between the display support and the hinge attachment frame. As a result, distance indicator 322 now partially extends into display support 308A. Similarly, in FIG. 3C, folding of the hinge assembly has caused continued movement of display support 308A relative to folding axis 320, further reducing the gap between the display support and hinge attachment frame. As a result, distance indicator 322 now extends through the display support and partially into bonding layer 316A. It will be understood that display support 308B may exhibit similar motion away from the folding axis during the folding motion of the hinge assembly.

[0046] Such movement of the display support can beneficially control the profile of the flexible display layer during folding of the foldable computing device. For instance, in examples where the display layer is coupled with the display support, movement of the display support away from the folding axis serves to pull portions of the flexible display layer away from the folding axis, thereby contributing to the teardrop profile exhibited in FIG. 3C. This can beneficially prevent portions of the flexible display layer from buckling toward the folding axis in an uncontrolled manner during the folding motion, thereby reducing strain on the display layer and improving longevity.

[0047] In some examples, this movement of the display support away from the folding axis during folding motion of the foldable display device is caused by contact between the display support and a virtual pivot link. This is illustrated with respect to FIG. 2E, again showing aspects of hinge assembly 200. However, in this example, only the display supports 208A and 208B are shown, along with virtual pivot links 206A-1 and 206B-1. Other components of hinge assembly 200 are omitted for the sake of visual clarity. Furthermore, as compared to the views of hinge assembly 200 provided in FIGS. 2A-D, FIG. 2E shows an underside of the hinge assembly –e.g., the hinge assembly  has been rotated about the X axis as labeled in FIGS. 2A-2E. As shown, display supports 208A and 208B include bridge portions 220A and 220B that contact the virtual pivot links 206A-1 and 206B-1. During folding of the hinge assembly, the virtual pivot links exert a force on the bridge portions of the display supports, thereby causing the movement of the display supports away from the folding axis as is illustrated in FIGS. 3A-3C.

[0048] FIG. 4 depicts another example hinge assembly 400 according to the present disclosure. While the shapes, sizes, and appearances of various components of hinge assembly 400 differ from those included in hinge assemblies 200 and 300, hinge assembly 400 may nonetheless provide similar functionality and benefits as hinge assemblies 200 and 300. It will be understood that hinge assembly 400 is another non-limiting example, and therefore the present disclosure is not limited to the arrangements depicted in FIG. 4.

[0049] In this example, hinge assembly 400 includes a hinge spine 402, which is connected to a hinge attachment frame 404A via two virtual pivot links 406A-1 and 406A-2. The hinge spine is similarly connected to a second hinge attachment frame 404B via another two virtual pivot links 406B-1 and 406B-2. Similar to hinge assemblies 200 and 300, hinge attachment frames 404A and 404B may be attached to first and second portions of a foldable computing device, such that the hinge assembly facilitates rotational movement of the two portions relative to one another.

[0050] Hinge assembly 400 additionally includes display supports 408A and 408B that are slidably attached to the virtual pivot links, such that the display supports have some freedom to move independently from the virtual pivot links. As with the examples described above, a flexible display layer may be coupled with the display supports, such that the flexible display and display supports move together during  folding of the hinge assembly. In this example, each display support is partially enclosed by a respective support enclosure bracket 410A and 410B. Each support enclosure bracket defines a void that is slightly larger than the display support enclosed by the enclosure, such that each display support has some freedom to move (e.g., slide) within its support enclosure bracket. In some examples, support enclosure bracket 410A is rigidly coupled with the virtual pivot links 406A-1 and 406A-2, such that the virtual pivot links and support enclosure bracket move together as a single structure. Similarly, in some examples, support enclosure bracket 410B is rigidly coupled with virtual pivot links 406B-1 and 406B-2.

[0051] Hinge assembly 400 additionally includes hinge guides 412A-1 and 412A-2 used to connect hinge spine 402 to hinge attachment frame 404A. Similarly, hinge guides 412B-1 and 412B-2 are used to connect hinge spine 402 to hinge attachment frame 404B. As discussed above, the hinge guides in some examples form portions of a four-bar linkage, in tandem with the hinge spine, hinge attachment frame, and virtual pivot links. This can beneficially control and constrain movement of one hinge attachment frame, and therefore one portion of a foldable computing device, relative to another.

[0052] In an example, a hinge assembly rotatably couples a first portion of a foldable computing device to a second portion of the foldable computing device, the hinge assembly comprising: a hinge spine; a hinge attachment frame attached to the first portion; a virtual pivot link connecting the hinge attachment frame to the hinge spine, wherein the virtual pivot link is movably coupled to the hinge spine via a virtual pivot; and a display support slidably attached to the virtual pivot link, such that the display support moves relative to the hinge attachment frame and the virtual pivot link during movement of the first portion relative to the second portion. In this example or  any other example, a flexible display layer extends between the first portion and the second portion of the foldable computing device and spans the hinge assembly, and wherein the flexible display layer bends during the movement of the first portion relative to the second portion. In this example or any other example, the display support defines a planar support surface, and wherein the flexible display layer is coupled with the planar support surface of the display support. In this example or any other example, the virtual pivot link supports the display support and provides resistance when physical force is applied to the flexible display layer. In this example or any other example, the hinge assembly further comprises a flexible metal layer disposed between the display support and the flexible display layer, such that the flexible metal layer is bonded to the planar support surface and bonded to the flexible display layer. In this example or any other example, the flexible metal layer includes a perforated section proximal to the hinge spine to facilitate stretching of the flexible metal layer during the movement of the first portion relative to the second portion. In this example or any other example, contact between the virtual pivot link and the display support causes movement of the display support in a direction away from a folding axis of the hinge assembly during the movement of the first portion relative to the second portion. In this example or any other example, the hinge assembly further comprises a living hinge attached to the display support and the hinge attachment frame, such that movement of the display support relative to the hinge attachment frame is constrained by the living hinge. In this example or any other example, the hinge assembly further comprises a hinge guide movably attached to the hinge spine and movably attached to the hinge attachment frame. In this example or any other example, the hinge spine, the hinge attachment frame, the virtual pivot link, and hinge guide collectively comprise a four-bar linkage. In this example or any other example, the hinge assembly further comprises: a second  hinge attachment frame attached to the second portion; a second virtual pivot link connecting the second hinge attachment frame to the hinge spine, wherein the second virtual pivot link is movably coupled to the hinge spine via a virtual pivot; and a second display support slidably attached to the second virtual pivot link, such that the second display support moves relative to the second virtual pivot link during movement of the first portion relative to the second portion.
